DAY 3: Favorite card type. ARTIFACT!

Day 30: Favorite Planeswalker-- Whoo! Last day, and the challenge is complete! Favorite 'walker is definitely Elspeth, with Elspeth, Knight Errant being my favorite iteration. They're all powerful, though. Not only that, but Elspeth is a great feminist character. She's modestly dressed but badass as hell, has a fuckton of agency and has plenty of interesting development. Plus, as a literal (albeit interdimensional) knight errant, she fulfills what is a traditionally male role in fantasy fiction without a shred of irony. No one makes a spectacle out of the fact that this noble but brooding character is a woman; we are just led to accept her as she is, which is awesome. Day 29: Favorite card ever-- I love Thassa, obviously. And Lord of Atlantis. And Geist of St. Traft. Isochron Scepter. Path to Exile. Balance. Swords to Plowshare. Elspeth Knight Errant. But at the end of the day, I always make room for Pristine Angel. Prior to the introduction of the Eldrazi (gag), there was almost nothing that could touch this lady. She made such an ideal finisher for control, but her unique mechanics also appealed to my Johnny side. Day 24: Favorite combo-- Reveillark + Karmic Guide. Just sitting here in the staff room at work, getting ready to switch from being on shift to on-site, on-call. I hope everyone is enjoying their Christmas Eve; mine is turning out pretty lonely, so I'm just solitairing some decks and missing my family. ANYWAY! Combo! I love how this combo has so many different possibilities to it. Take your pick of an enabler-- Saffi, Mirror Entity, Phyrexian Altar, Ashnod's Altar... whatever! Need infinite draw? Mulldrifter it! Day 23: An overrated card. Skipped yesterday's until today, just wasn't feeling it. Anyway, Voice is definitely an overrated card. Sure, it's potent in a lot of decks. But I've seen way too many people running it and expecting its presence alone to prevent their inevitable overextensions from suffering punishment. And then you get into the people who have no idea how to use it most effectively. Day 18: Favorite art-- I knew today was going to be an exceptionally hard one. Day 17: Favorite non-basic land-- Celestial Colonnade. My favorite story about the Colonnade comes from a casual match at a free play event a local place that closed about a year ago. I was playing a relatively new player who had that attitude problem so many new players have. I was running a sort of ramshackle Modern UW Control, and he was getting frustrated by my board control. He says, very smugly, "well maybe I can't beat you, but your deck still sucks because all it can do is stop me. It can't even damage me!' I said "sure I can!' And he snorts and is like "when, after you wear down my entire deck?" And I say, "I've had a finisher on the field since turn 3. You can't see it?" And he gives me a look and says no. Day 16: A hidden gem. Martial Coup. I've found this card to be such a flexible workhorse of a card over the years. It's an amazing example of how to generate card advantage without drawing cards. It's a board wipe, a finisher, and although not optimum, it can generate a board presence even when under its Wrath threshold. I just adore it. Day 12: Least favorite block-- Mirrodin. You know how sometimes a movie has an awesome cast but still manages to not be a very good movie? That was Mirrodin for me. Some obvious great pieces, but a combination of lackluster flavor and circumstances really killed it for me. Onslaught/Mirrodin Standard was when I started playing seriously, and it was a really terrible time. Very hostile to new players, the color pie was more or less irrelevant, and Ravager... *shudder* I really hated it.
