Finally, I can share the trailer of my independent short film (離風藍蘭), which has been invited to several festivals for its premiere! Two and a half years of self-animating, painting and producing, it is to honour my sister’s passing. Ultimately, this project became my refuge from pain and an act of love
Nevertheless, thanks to my family as always.

Brazey is coming to Minnesota! The Brazey short will be screening at the Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival on April 15th as part of their Childish Short Films set!
I will not be in attendance, but if you’re in the area, I suggested checking it out because there are some other cool shorts in that set as well! Let me know if you plan to go!

To the Ends of the Earth Shines an Empathetic Light on a Divided World
Kiyoshi Kurosawa's latest film, screening now as part of MSPIFF, explores the barriers between people and the importance of human connection.
Anyone who has worked on a film set, whether as a director, actor, or PA, will have plenty of reason to cringe during the first 30 minutes of To the Ends of the Earth (Tabi no Owari Sekai no Hajimari). It’s not that the shoot depicted is especially bad. Some types of things just happen when you’re trying to make order out of reality’s chaos, and perhaps when people get so involved with their…

Twin Cities Annual Events: Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival and Minnesota State Fair
Minneapolis and St. Paul, the Twin Cities, are home to many annual events that draw visitors from all over the region. Two of the most notable events are the Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival and the Minnesota State Fair.
Tumblr media
The Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival, also known as MSPIFF, is the largest film festival in the upper Midwest and one of the longest-running in the United States. This festival showcases the works of emerging and established filmmakers from around the world. MSPIFF has been held annually since 1977, usually in April and May, the festival features a wide range of films, including feature-length narratives, documentaries, and short films, in addition to hosting special screenings, guest appearances, and panel discussions.
Another popular annual event in the Twin Cities is the Minnesota State Fair. Known as the "Great Minnesota Get-Together," the fair is held annually over 12 days in late August and early September. The fair features a wide range of exhibits, entertainment, and activities, including agricultural exhibits, live music, food vendors, and rides and games. The fair also features a wide range of unique food items, from traditional fair fare like deep-fried foods, to creative new items like bacon-wrapped turkey legs, cheese curds and more.
Both of these events are a great way to experience the culture and community of Minneapolis and St. Paul. MSPIFF is a chance to see the latest in independent and international cinema, while the Minnesota State Fair is a chance to enjoy all the sights, sounds, and tastes of the region. If you're in the Twin Cities area during these events, be sure to check them out!

TAFI Best of Festival, National Scholastic Gold Medal, MSPIFF Nextwave Finalist, AAHSFF Best Animation Nominee
My short film “Thaw”. It is about the process of warming up and returning to a place of love, inspired by a family story of my great-grandfather’s sudden imprisonment in a Russian gulag. He nearly froze to death, but luck allowed him to return home.

MSPIFF 2024 Volume 4
Get ready for Volume 4 of reviews from the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Film Festival!!
The largest annual celebration of international cinema in the region MSPIFF43 Volume 4 Writing about film for more than ten years has allowed me to cover movies from blockbusters to indies. Last night at St. Anthony Main Theatre, several people queued up to welcome us to opening night of the 36th annual Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival. Alderman Jacob Frey talked about the impact the festival’s had on the neighborhood. Mayor Betsy Hodges, preaching to the decidedly converted, talked about the importance of the arts at a time when they’re under siege (*cough*nold *cough*rump). MSP Film Society staffers talked about the programming, and board member Craig Rice alluded to the last five years of transition.
That was an allusion to, among other things, the retirement of Al Milgrom — a man who was, for decades, synonymous with the society he founded and its flagship festival. MSPIFF weathered that transition, and it’s also managing to thrive in a world where the status of film itself is in rapid transition.
With streaming TV attracting ever more popular and critical attention, the movie industry finds its middle ground falling away. Event-movie blockbusters like Jurassic World and Beauty and the Beast still do well, and the film-festival circuit continues to buzz with adventurous independent films; the challenge is breaking out of that circuit to do respectable box office.
MSPIFF opener The Lost City of Z is already zooming towards its April 21 release, and it’s winning critical raves, though we’ll see what happens when — as the Replacements would put it — the shit hits the fans. It’s being sold as a stirring tale of adventure and madness, but it plays like a failed attempt to flip the script on the colonial narrative.

The Sounding Combines Darkness, Warmth, and Stellar Acting
There's one more screening of The Sounding at #MSPIFF. Here's why you should go see it!
The screen fades in on an overhead view of waves hitting rocks, putting you in the mind of William Shakespeare’s The Tempest. That first shot isn’t the only imagery that reminded me of a Shakespearean locale, but it definitely sets the mood perfectly for the tale that unfolds in The Sounding, both directed by and starring Catherine Eaton. Liv (Catherine Eaton) and Lionel (Harris Yulin). Asya…
