Heartbreak | Kieran & Narcissa
This was, undoubtedly, one of the hardest things Narcissa Black had to do in her life so far.
The other was being engaged to a man she wasn’t sure she loved.
Since regaining her memory about Lucius and all that entailed him, she had been torn between her heart and her duty.  Kieran Christie had been there for her when Lucius wasn’t.  Lucius, in Narcissa’s mind, had abandoned her because she couldn’t trust him.  Or she left him because she feared that he wouldn’t stick around and so she intentionally pushed him away.  And Kieran was the sole comfort in her life that gave her the strength to fall in love again, even when she didn’t remember that she already loved someone else.
She had another student (a friend of Kieran’s) take a note to him.  It told him to meet her in the armor gallery on the third floor of the castle after dusk.  Narcissa figured that not many people would visit this area of the school at that time, and her instincts were correct.  The torches were already lit by magical means illuminating the otherwise dark corridor, save for the carved-out windows that were high up.
Her heels clacked on the floor to a steady rhythm as she paced back and forth on the stone floor. Nervously, she pulled at her fingers and bit at her lower lip, waiting for Kieran to appear.  Her heart beat incessantly, wondering how she would tell him what she needed to.
“Narcissa,” a voice called to her.  Hairs raised on the back of her neck.  She turned her head to see Kieran standing there, a smile on his face, relieved to see her.  They had been dating publicly for quite some time, except in the case of her parents, who were still oblivious as to exactly whom their youngest daughter had set her cap for.  For all intents and purposes, Lucius was her betrothed, and Narcissa was just being stubborn about it all.  And for her part, she had to break the news to Kieran, leaving him hurt in the process.
She plastered a smile on her face.  It was more like a grimace.  They were happy.  He made her happy, but despite all that, there had always been a void in her heart. And if it were up to Lucius to fill that void, he had a long way to go to earn her trust again.  “Hello, Kieran,” she greeted.  He came forward, taking his hands in hers and placed a kiss on her cheek. He then pulled back, watching her face for a moment.  Immediately he could fathom that something was wrong.  “Hey, now, what’s with that sullen look?  Are you having a bad day, love?  Do I need to deck someone for ya?”
Narcissa shook her head and gave him a smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes.  “Um, no,” she replied.  “No, but, I do need to talk to you.”  Kieran looked at her concerned.  “You know you can tell me anything.  No secrets between us, right?”  The girl had no idea how to break this to him.  He was such a good friend and boyfriend especially.  He was there even before she erased her memory, and even he didn’t know about it.  He didn’t deserve what Narcissa was about to say to him.
He led her to a place where they could sit.  Narcissa smoothed down her skirt, prim and proper girl that she was.  Kieran took her hand again, waiting for her to speak.
“You know…Lucius Malfoy, yes?” Narcissa started.
“Your ex-boyfriend, yeah, I know.”  Inwardly, Kieran’s pulse was racing.  He hoped that Narcissa wouldn’t say she was going back to him.  Unfortunately, that really was the case.
“I’m still engaged to him, whether I like it or not.”
“But that’s your parents’ doing.  Can’t you get out of it?”
“No—I can’t!  I can’t be like Andromeda.  I can’t risk getting burned off the tapestry!”
“Narcissa!” Kieran said, the tone of his voice raised.  “Don’t you care about us?  What does it matter what your family thinks?”
She was exasperated and grasping at straws.  So was he.
“What, I’m sixteen years old and so are you.  You think you know love enough to want to marry me?”  She shook her head.  “We’re still kids!  I’ve had my life mapped out for me since I was a baby—I was betrothed since the day I was born.”  She sighed, the air pushing out of her lungs.  “I have to keep my word or I’ll be left with nothing.”
Kieran pressed his lips together, having removed his grasp on Narcissa’s hand.  He nodded slowly at her, disbelieving that he was getting dumped by someone who he thought genuinely loved him.  “So it’s to be Malfoy, then?  Weren’t you the one who said he treated you poorly, like you weren’t even there and yet he dates half the school—anyone with legs and without a Y chromosome?”  It still wasn’t a secret that that was the way Lucius operated.  “Do you really want a husband like that?”
“I don’t have a choice,” Narcissa replied, her voice breaking.
Kieran couldn’t stand to see her in tears, not after the way she was hurting him.  He looked away from her and stood up from his seat.  Turning back to face her, he began again.  “Of course you have a choice!  You’re just too scared to act out how you really want to. And if you do what your parents always tell you to do you’ll be locked up in that gilded cage of yours forever. Oh, don’t tell me you don’t have one.   You’ve always told me you felt trapped in your family.  And if you marry Malfoy, it’s not gonna be any better.”
Narcissa looked up at him, her lips parted and looking at him in disbelief.  “How dare you?”
“Excuse me?  You’re the one bringing me up here telling me you want to go back to your abusive ex-boyfriend!”  He couldn’t find the right words to say as he paced back and forth on the stone floor, stumbling on every way he tried to begin a sentence without following through.  “He better take care of you, Narcissa Black.  ‘Cause this is it.  This is your decision.”
She had hoped to part with him on better terms.
But she was the one hurting him.  Breaking his heart.

Forget Me Not | drabble (Narcissa’s amnesia)
Days had passed, perhaps a week since that encounter with the stranger in the Slytherin Common Room.  Narcissa was so confused at his actions.  How dare he kiss her and try to tell her that they belonged together?!  She didn’t know him and he knew nothing about her!  The only piece of information she had was that his name was Lucius Malfoy and that he was a Slytherin.  And he kissed her…a kiss full of longing and desperation.  Narcissa shook it off, having scrubbed her lips with soap and water several times since the incident.  But she never told Kieran about it.  It bothered her to think about it, but she couldn’t stop.
Over the course of those days, bits and pieces of just thinking about Lucius floated through her head, causing her heart to clench and hurt. She was sure it wasn’t a heart attack, since she was in perfectly good health, and she had confirmed it with Andromeda who still worked at the infirmary under Madam Pomfrey’s tutelage. Though Andromeda absolutely despised Lucius, she also noticed the declining happiness of her own baby sister. She frowned.  Andromeda wanted Narcissa to marry for love, and she definitely did not want her to marry Lucius Malfoy of all people.
“Narcissa, are you all right?” she asked, concern in her voice.
The blonde nodded slowly. “Yeah…yeah…it’s nothing. Just…nothing,” she sighed, sitting on the hospital bed.  “I should get going.”  She stood up, Andromeda immediately holding her arms out to steady her sister, just in case she was going to fall.  “No,” Narcissa said, refusing Andromeda’s help.  “I’m fine.  I have to get to class,” she lied.
But all was not well in Narcissa’s head.  As she left the hospital wing, she could not help but think of that encounter in the Common Room.  It was unexpected, and yet his kiss sparked a fire inside her that made her feel alive. ‘Who is he to me,’ Narcissa wondered, ‘and why can’t I understand any of it?’  She pressed her hand against her lips, as if she felt his kiss even then.
Andromeda watched the retreating form of her sister.  Filled with a twinge of guilt, she wondered if the spell her sister had cast was really the best idea.  Of course it wasn’t.  Narcissa had to learn from her mistakes, and running away from them wasn’t the problem. Just like Andromeda herself had confronted her parents head-on about her refusal to marry as they chose, which subsequently got her burned off the tapestry.  She wasn’t going to let Narcissa make the same mistake she did. Except for Andromeda, it wasn’t a mistake.  It was the right thing to do.
She waited a few minutes before leaving her workplace.  At her desk, she took out an object – a container that looked like a small jewelry box. Andromeda slipped it into her pocket before heading out the door.  “I can’t believe I’m doing this,” she muttered to herself.  For her sister’s sake, she went out to hunt down Lucius Malfoy and tell him exactly what he needed to hear.
The bloody git was found where she thought she’d find him: having a pint with some friends over at the Hog’s Head.  “Malfoy!” she called.
Lucius was immersed in conversation with his circle of friends when Andromeda interrupted them. “Well, well, if it isn’t the blood-traitor?  The hell d’you want?” he sneered, sprawling on his chair.
“Just get the hell over here.  I need to talk to you.”  She bit her tongue, hating herself for having come all the way out here in search of her sister’s fiancé.  But it was for Narcissa’s sake, and she had to make sure that whatever spell she cast on herself was erased.  Her request was met with catcalls and insults from the other Slytherins who didn’t like her too much for associating with Mudbloods.
The blond Slytherin stared at her for a moment, before deciding to get up.  “Yeah, whatever,” he said, rising from his seat.  The other boys were agog at this action.  “What, Luce, you’re gonna go off with a blood-traitor now?  She’s not worth it, man,” they said.  “Shut up,” he retorted to make them quiet down.  “I’ll see you boys later.”
They walked away from the cacophonous uproar in town.  Andromeda had a serious look on her face as she was a few steps ahead of Lucius, who was wondering what Andromeda wanted.  He knew that it had something to do with Narcissa, otherwise her older sister wouldn’t have intentionally come to him, let alone chase him all the way to Hogsmeade.  At a clearing in the woods outside of the small town, they stopped.
“What do you want, Andromeda?” Lucius finally said.
“Do you love my sister?” Andromeda asked.
Lucius was taken aback. “A-are you daft?!”
“Answer the question, Malfoy.  Do you love my sister?” she repeated sternly.
He stared at Andromeda, unsure of how he should answer.  “What does it matter?  It was what it was and now it’s over.  She’s with that Kieran Christie guy, and she doesn’t even remember who I am.  Can you tell me why the hell that’s happened?”
Andromeda had her hands in her pockets, her fingers fiddling with the small box hidden in one of them. She paced the ground slowly.  “I suppose you already know about the baby,” she said.
That caught Lucius off guard.  He stiffened. “Yes,” he answered.  He was fully aware that last summer it was revealed that he’d gotten her pregnant.  He was also aware that she did not want to keep the baby, and he begged and pleaded for her to not terminate its life.
Since then, he hadn’t heard a word about what she’d done.  Part of him kept up hope that his baby was safe somewhere, in loving arms. He dreaded the idea of abortion. Most of all, he wanted to imagine that, if she still loved him, they could be a family.  He’d make sure his child would want for nothing.  But he never asked.
“Where is the child?” he then asked.
Andromeda pressed her lips together, closed her eyes and shook her head.
Lucius felt his heart clench and practically shatter into a million of pieces.  Unknown emotions bubbled up inside of him.  His throat tightened.  And he did something that he didn’t quite expect to do at all.
He broke down, sobbing. A loud scream resounded through the woods.  Lucius doubled over, clutching his stomach and dropping to the ground.  Andromeda was startled, but she kept her distance from him.  A tear welled up in her eye.  She hated Lucius, but she’d never seen him this vulnerable.
“Why the hell did you tell me this?” he snarled through gritted teeth.
“Because you had to know, Lucius!  She’s broken, too.  She just doesn’t know it.  I don’t have a sister anymore, I have a shell of Narcissa walking in that body, Malfoy.  And it’s your fault!  If you hadn’t been so callous and careless—“ Andromeda said, agitated.
“How the hell was I supposed to know she was with child?  What else has she done to destroy herself like that?” Lucius shot back.  She was fifteen.  They were still in Hogwarts.  What could they have done to avoid scandal to their names?  Granted, they were already betrothed, but it wasn’t publicly announced, either.  “She…she doesn’t remember me anymore!  Or she’s lying, I don’t know.”
The box felt ever uncomfortable in her pocket.  Granted, it was small, but it was very important, at least for Narcissa’s sake. Andromeda had to tell the truth.
“She doesn’t remember you because she cast a spell on herself to forget each and every single memory of you.  And…judging from the look of things, it worked.”  She looked at him with pity in her eyes. “But she’s not the same Cissy.” She finally pulled out the box and held it out on her palm, in front of Lucius.  He looked at her in confusion.  “This box contains her memories of you.  Everything she ever felt for you is locked up tight in here” Lucius reached for it, but Andromeda snatched it back.  He cleared his throat.
“Get up,” she instructed, exasperatedly, shaking her head.
Lucius finally stood, wiping his face with the back of his hand, breathing in and out through his mouth. His heart pumped wildly, at his anguish and the possibility that what Andromeda the blood-traitor was saying may be true.  “What do you want from me?” he ground out.
“I want you to prove that you do love her.  Not just through your words but your actions.  I want you to show her that she’s actually worth a damn to you than just a notch in your bedpost.”  Andromeda didn’t know why she would even trust Lucius with this task. Hell, she would sooner trust a viper than Lucius Malfoy, the boy who broke her sister’s heart.   But he could also just possibly be the man who was meant for her.  Narcissa was questioning so many things lately, and Andromeda had no idea how else to fill in the blanks but to lay everything bare.  And in any case, she didn’t agree with Narcissa’s idea to eradicate her memory with a non-curriculum-approved spell.  It was dangerous.  She knew it.  Narcissa knew it, but her sister took the risk and had nearly cost herself her own well-being.
Lucius threw a hand up in the air in exasperation.  “Well how am I supposed to prove it?  What do you want me to do?  I’m already engaged to your sister and she doesn’t know it!”  When Andromeda only stared at him, narrowing her eyes, it clicked in his head.  “No. No, you can’t be serious. Andromeda, you’re crossing the line!”
Andromeda only held up the box again, between three fingers.  “You know, this is such a tiny thing.  Narcissa’s sealed it up somehow, and it can’t be opened, no matter how much I try to force it.  I wonder how all her memories and affection for you can fit into this little box.  I mean, it’s practically nothing.  I could toss it into the lake—it’s only a trifle, right?  Completely replaceable.  She wouldn’t even know it was missing.  Hell, she doesn’t even remember its existence.”
“You’re just as bad as Bellatrix,” he muttered.
“I’m still a Black, even if I’ve been the one who was disowned,” Andromeda retorted.  She tossed the jewel box toward him without warning.  He was quick to catch it.  “Swear you’ll protect her.  That you’ll be faithful to her and her only. When you two marry, you’ll have to make the Unbreakable Vow anyway.  Why not do it right now and get it over with?”  She was challenging him, and he did not like being challenged by a female, let alone a blood-traitor.
Andromeda turned to walk back towards Hogwarts.  “Better think about it, Malfoy.  She’s not easy to win over.  Especially when she’s already replaced you with someone else.”  Lucius narrowed his eyes.  He’d seen it—Narcissa with another male.  Definitely not a Slytherin, or else he would’ve known the git.  It made his blood boil to see them together, especially once he’d already declared she belonged to him and had left his mark on her to prove it.
He looked down at the box. One would have thought it was very easy to open.  Testing Andromeda’s theory, he pried the ends with his fingers.  It wouldn’t separate.  “The hell?” he said to himself, turning the box this way and that to see if there was some sort of secret button or hinge that could be opened. There was nothing.  Just a small trinket box, supposedly filled with whatever Narcissa had put in it.  It couldn’t have been as simple as a vial of a Pensieve memory.
No, whatever memories he and Narcissa had together were much bigger than that to be locked up in a little box.  He clenched it in his fists, looking up to where he’d last seen Andromeda.  But she was gone from view.
“Damn her,” Lucius muttered, figuring the woman had already Apparated back to the castle.  He looked back at Hogsmeade, where he’d left his mates waiting for him.  Pressing his lips together, he inhaled through his nose.  He had to know.  He had to get Narcissa back.
Back at Hogwarts, Narcissa Black struggled to concentrate on a lab assignment.  Potions again.  Her grades in this section were less than pleasant, so she always had to spend extra time in the lab fixing up her projects. But her mind was apparently on other things.  How dare this scoundrel insinuate that she had a past affair with him?  She didn’t know him, and even though he was a Slytherin, she certainly wouldn’t date him…would she?
Perhaps.
Narcissa struggled to swallow the lump in her throat.  The words on the pages of her textbook swam across the paper, rendering her unable to devote her attention to whatever it was that she’d been reading.  She was too distracted by a single kiss.  Lucius Malfoy instilled a fire in her soul that Kieran hadn’t given her.  And Kieran always treated her so well.  He was her boyfriend.  She should at least have the decency to tell him what happened.  But a week had already passed and all she’d done was keep her mouth shut.  Her conscience wasn’t clear.  She was confused.
“Cissy.”  A female voice interrupted her thoughts and she looked up.  “Andie,” she gasped.  “W-what are you doing here?”  She shifted her textbook aside and put down the test tube in its holder.  Andromeda’s arms were folded as she leaned in the doorway. “3:14 PM on a Sunday and you’re not out in Hogsmeade spending time with friends.  Rather, you’re hanging out here by yourself.  I know you, Cissy.  I may not be a part of the family any longer, but you’re still my sister and I have to look out for you when you’re off making mistakes.  Like that over there,” she said, pointing to the lab station her sister was working in.  “It’s dangerous to be working with caustic substances when you’re not thinking clearly.” She pushed herself off from the door’s arch and walked towards the station, turning off the Bunsen burner and righting the bottles of potion ingredients in their places.  “What’s really on your mind, Narcissa?”
The blonde sucked in her lips, afraid to tell her sister of the clandestine encounter she had, especially when she and Andromeda were no longer allowed to publicly associate with each other.  Blue eyes looked up nervously into emerald ones.  “Somebody kissed me,” she finally admitted.
Andromeda raised her brows. “And?” she urged for her sister to continue.
“I…liked it.” Narcissa’s cheeks turned a hue of pink.
“It wasn’t Kieran?”
Narcissa shook her head. “No.”
The middle Black sister bit her lip, quickly understanding where this was going.  “Lucius Malfoy.”  It wasn’t a question, but a statement.  She was met with a nod from her younger sister.  “I see.  Narcissa, there’s something you need to know.”
They were interrupted by the sound of running footsteps coming down the hall and stopping at the wide-open door.  The two girls turned their heads toward the intruder, only to see Lucius there. Narcissa gasped and her heart felt like it stopped.  Lucius was panting, sweaty from having run through the castle in search of the girl who plagued his every being.  The path from Hogsmeade to Hogwarts wasn’t easy, either, but he’d made it here.  He looked to Andromeda, who only smiled (for her sister’s sake) and let go of her sister.  “Have you sorted everything out then?” she asked him.
“What?” Lucius asked, then nodded his head.  “Y-yeah. Erm…thank…you,” he managed to say. Though he knew Andromeda was definitely not the biggest supporter of himself and Narcissa, he also wondered why she was trying to help them out.  The Andromeda Black he knew forbade Lucius from coming within an inch near Narcissa.  This was just rather odd.
“Andie,” Narcissa called, but Andromeda only turned back once to look at her sister.  “This is something you need to figure out, Cissy,” she answered before heading out the door.
Lucius and Narcissa found themselves left alone.  Narcissa was frightened of him.  She backed up a little until she hit the lab table.  Lucius stuck a hand out.  “No, wait! Please…Narcissa….Cissa,” he breathed. “I have to talk to you.”  He swallowed the saliva in his mouth before continuing.  “Please. Let me explain.”  Narcissa stayed where she was, but Lucius had made his way closer to her, keeping himself at arm’s length away from her.
He pulled out the box Andromeda gave him and showed it to Narcissa.  “I was hoping you could tell me what this is.”  There was no hint of recognition in Narcissa’s eyes.  “I…I’m sorry, I don’t know what this has to do with me.”
“But darling, it has everything to do with you.  To us.”  That frightened Narcissa more.
“What do you mean? Speak frankly!” she ordered.
Lucius sighed.  “I’m trying to tell you, Cissa!  This is yours.  According to your sister, it’s yours.  It’s…it contains your memories.  Of me. Cissa, you can’t really tell me you don’t remember me at all?”  She shook her head, much to his disappointment.
“I don’t understand how you did this, or why you would.  But last winter?  We were together.  I loved you, Cissa.  And you loved me.  Please…please tell me somewhere inside you, you still love me, too?”
“I DON’T KNOW YOU!” Narcissa screamed suddenly.  She moved to bolt for the door, but Lucius was faster.  He caught her in her arms.  “Narcissa, stop!  Listen to me, you have to know the truth!” he ordered.  Narcissa gasped and choked back a sob, wondering why her heart was feeling so crushed with this man standing in front of her and holding her hostage.
He held her by her shoulders and stared at her in the eye.  “I still love you.  You’ve got to believe that.  I made my mistakes, and I regret having done them.  We’re to be married, Narcissa.  I never got the chance to propose to you because I wasn’t sure of myself.  But I’ll do anything to get you back.  Just please come back,” he pleaded, wrapping his arms around her tightly.  Once again, he thought of what Andromeda had told him – that Narcissa had indeed terminated her pregnancy.  It saddened him to think of the future they wouldn’t be able to share with their child.
“You’re crying,” Narcissa murmured, a hitch in her throat.  “You’re telling me about all this…and I can’t remember you.”  She pushed him away but her limbs were too weak. “If everything you’re telling me is true, then show me.  Show me what I’ve forgotten…what was so important…that it tore my heart in two?!”
Lucius didn’t hesitate. He shoved the jewel box into her hands then grasped the sides of her face, leaned over her and kissed her lips, the same kiss he’d always given her.  Narcissa allowed her body to lose all control in his kiss.  Closing her eyes, she dropped the box and it clattered to the floor. It flashed a bright light before cracking itself open.  Energy surged from it and surrounded Narcissa’s body.  Memories stirred up, ones she couldn’t understand.  But as more and more of them surged through her mind, she started to cry.  A first kiss. An intimate touch.  A future with a baby.  Hatred.  Childhood. Teasing.  Hogwarts.  Heartbreak. Lucius.
He’d been right there all along.  She couldn’t remember being close to Lucius, but the only thing she knew was that seeing him made her heart ache.  But at the same time, it was better than the pain of not seeing him.
She gasped, breaking off the kiss and looked up at him.  Lucius wiped the tears from her eyes and tried to manage a smile.  His Cissa stared at him as the pieces began to fall into place.  Narcissa breathed in and out before she raised an arm at him.  She hit his chest repeatedly with her fists.  “Bastard!” she cursed.  “You liar! I hate you!” she cried out.  He took all the hits.  The last time they’d fought, she’d done the exact same thing.  But he missed it.  He shoved her arms aside and hugged her against his body, kissing the top of her head. “Hate me, Cissa.  Hate me all you want.  I’ll still love you,” he declared.  She continued to sob as she finally gave up and clutched his arms, burying her face into his chest.  “You made me kill our baby…I lost our baby.”  Lucius shook his head.  “I know.”
“You weren’t there when I needed you.”
“I know.  Shh.  I’m here now, Cissa.  I’m here for you.”
“How do I know you won’t run out on me again?”
Lucius pressed his lips together.  “You don’t. But I’ll try to make it better for us.” He kissed her head again. Narcissa’s arms spread the width of his back as she continued crying.
Outside the door, Andromeda watched the scene unfold before her eyes.  Her own heart broke for her sister.  She twisted the engagement ring that she wore from Ted.  Having felt that she’d intruded enough to hopefully let Lucius fix the rest of her sister, she turned and walked out of the hall.

mrsnarcissamalfoy-to-you:
Ever the regal socialite, she sat up straight, looking at him.  The silence that passed between them lingered for an extended period of time.  Yes, she had missed him so.  She wondered every single day if Draco was doing all right, or what he was doing at the moment.  Was he taking care of himself?  Was he dating anyone?
She tilted her head slightly as he greeted her with a peck on the cheek.  ”Of course, my dear.  Why wouldn’t I be?  And you are always welcome to come home, you know.  No matter where you are, this is still your home.”
"I know," he replied, straightening up and resting his hand on his mother's back while he stood beside her. As the words made their way back to him 'home', he found himself narrowing his eyes and gritting his teeth. His gaze went about the room they were in; like all of the Malfoy manor, it had tall ceilings and dark coloured walls. The most inaudible sigh omitted from his lips.
[  This had not been HOME in a long, long time.                 That title was stripped away from it when wicked                 memories haunted nearly every room. Yes, now                  that they had earned it back through the sacrifice                of making  themselves puppets for the Dark Lord.
Their strings were cut. They could breathe  without tight muscles on their necks. The Manor could be his home...but he had grown from it. ]
"Do you have company out here?" he asked her then, his gaze flashing back down. Their third member was away in a cell n Azkaban, or Draco was led to believe since the trial. He would have read about his release..she would have sent him an owl, right?

Masquerade Ball | Narcissa’s POV (@mrsnarcissamalfoy-to-you)
“Narcissa, there you are!”
The blonde female was easily identified by her cousin, even while her face was covered in a Venetian mask. She was the type of girl to radiate a sort of glow that drew attention to her beauty, and hopefully suitors with it. She was dressed as a princess, and rightfully so, in pure white, adorned with gold trim and pink roses.  Her blonde hair was curled in a slight updo, with a large amount of tendrils falling along the sides of her face.
She turned to face Evan Rosier, dressed as a Georgian-era aristocrat who was calling her attention. Narcissa could recognize her cousin in his costume, seeing as she had seen him unmasked earlier that afternoon in the same costume when her family arrived early to get ready at the Rosier residence.  She gave her cousin a charming smile.  “Shh,” she hushed.  “This is a masked ball—your masked ball, cousin! Nobody’s supposed to know who I am,” she giggled.
Evan had to act casual if he was going to pull this plan off for his friend.  “I know,” he replied nonchalantly.  Following him was a tall male, dressed similarly as an aristocrat from eons ago, though perhaps also as a vampire.  Narcissa could not tell what exactly the other male was, but she knew he was eyeing her.  “Hey, I need you to do me a favor,” Evan said, distracting her momentarily. Narcissa shifted her eyes from the unknown male.  “Yeah?” she asked, already figuring out in her mind what Evan would want, if the word “favor” just happened to be associated with the guy he brought along with him.
“This is Cliff, a good friend of mine,” he’d lied, gesturing to the male.  “Cliff” was giving her a seductive smirk.  “A pleasure to meet you, Miss Black,” he said, crossing a hand over his chest and bowing, extending one of his legs outwards, just like one of those aristocratic men in Georgian times.  A ‘fop,’ she recalled as the term used to describe such a male.  Narcissa could not tell if he was playing around, but then again this was a masquerade where one did not have to act as they normally did in public.
“It is a pleasure to meet you…Cliff,” Narcissa replied, watching him warily.  Evan leaned down in Narcissa’s ear so she could hear him clearly. “He’d like to dance the next waltz with you.  Is that okay?”  Narcissa looked at her cousin and nodded her head.  “Sure.”  She did not know what compelled her to agree to dance with someone she just met, but this sort of thing happened all the time at balls.  Evan pulled back and grinned.  “Thanks.  I owe you one, Cissy,” he said, giving her a one-armed hug and a peck on the cheek. Narcissa chuckled.  “Sure you do.”
Cliff had straightened his stance.  He placed his arms behind his back and nodded to his friend, murmuring a “thanks” before the other male slipped off, leaving the two of them alone.  Narcissa took in the sight of his costume.  It was quite elaborate: a long, green coat with a high collar, reminiscent of a swashbuckling nobleman.  His trousers were black, as was his waistcoat.  His Hessian boots were white, trimmed with gold and silver, and his cravat was also white, adorned with a ruby pin.  She could not see his hair, for it was tied back and covered by his mask – an ivory base with gold and silver swirls, and a black hat façade attached to the top of it.
She realized that the waltz was about to start, and Cliff had to lead her to the dance floor.  “So, Miss Black, would you care to do me the honor of dancing with me?”  He extended his gloved hand towards her.  Narcissa placed her own hand in his.  “You may.”
He led her the few steps towards the area where the other dance partners had already taken their place, and found a spot for the two of them.  He took his left hand in her right, and his other hand was placed strategically at her waist.  She, in turn, placed her free hand on his shoulder.  Cliff was tall, she’d given him that.  But could he dance well?
The orchestra began to play and Cliff began to waltz her across the room.  Narcissa gave herself over to the sheer enjoyment she was having at that moment.  The floor seemed to vanish as they floated effortlessly.
Narcissa met his gaze, which was suddenly so intent.
“You seem happy,” he said softly.
“I am enjoying myself,” she admitted.
“Then I am glad.”  His gaze slid over her face briefly, to the edge of her bodice.  When it lifted, he smiled again.  Narcissa found herself blushing at so forward an act.
They did not speak again, and when the music ended, Narcissa gazed into Cliff’s beautiful eyes, wishing for another turn.  Something in his eyes reminded her of something so familiar.  Gray eyes looked back at her in a certain manner.
Someone in the room had called the dancers to take off their masks.  Distantly, Narcissa could hear the instruction, but it took a while to register in her mind.  Gingerly, she pressed her mask up first to reveal her face to Cliff, who seemed to already know who she was.
Cliff lifted his own mask up, revealing his identity as well.
Immediately, Narcissa’s heart turned over hard.
“Hello, Narcissa,” Lucius Malfoy greeted warmly, still smiling at her.  “Cliff” was nonexistent.  The charade between the two of them was over.
“Lucius,” she whispered in surprise.
