Yes, international students studying in a specific country can apply for local education loans, but the availability and terms of these loans vary significantly depending on the country and financial institutions involved. Here are some general considerations:
1. Eligibility Requirements:
Most local education loans are designed for domestic students, and eligibility criteria for international students can be stringent.
International students often need a co-signer or guarantor who is a resident or citizen of the host country. This guarantor usually needs a good credit history and sufficient income.
Some banks or financial institutions may require a valid study permit, proof of enrollment in a recognized institution, and a detailed budget of education expenses.
2. Loan Providers:
Some countries have government-backed student loan programs that are typically not available to international students.
Private banks and financial institutions are the primary sources of education loans for international students. Terms and conditions, including interest rates and repayment plans, can vary widely.
Certain universities may have partnerships with banks that offer tailored loan packages for their international students.
3. Interest Rates and Repayment Terms:
Interest rates for international students can be higher compared to domestic students due to the perceived higher risk.
Repayment terms might start immediately or within a few months after graduation, depending on the lender’s policies.
Some loans may have flexible repayment options, but international students might not have access to all the benefits available to domestic borrowers.
4. Alternative Options:
Scholarships and grants: Many international students rely on scholarships, grants, or financial aid provided by the host institution, government programs, or international organizations.
International student loans: Some specialized financial institutions offer loans specifically for international students, often without needing a local co-signer.
Personal savings or funds from family: These are commonly used by international students to cover their expenses.
5. Application Process:
The application process generally involves providing personal and financial information, proof of enrollment, study permits, and details about your guarantor (if required).
It's important to compare loan offers from different institutions to find the most favorable terms.
6. Country-Specific Rules:
USA: Some banks and credit unions offer loans to international students with a U.S.-based co-signer. There are also specialized international student loan providers like MPOWER Financing that do not require a co-signer.
Canada: Major Canadian banks may offer loans to international students, typically requiring a Canadian co-signer. Certain provinces may have specific loan programs.
UK: International students can sometimes access loans through private banks or specialized lenders, but options are limited without a UK guarantor.
Australia: Loans for international students are less common, but some financial institutions may offer personal loans that can be used for educational purposes.
In summary, while international students can apply for local education loans in some countries, they often face challenges such as higher interest rates, the need for a local co-signer, and limited loan options. It's essential for students to thoroughly research and explore all available financial aid options to fund their studies abroad.

Master in Peace and Conflict Studies Application Essay
The name “Tausug”, means, literally, “people of the current.” We are found mainly in the areas around the Sulu archipelago, but since 1974 -- when the main island of Jolo was overtaken by paramilitary forces, with thousands fleeing their homes for safety -- have spread out to areas such as Zamboanga City. Within Jolo, in the area known as Patikul, is where my father was born and raised. I always wondered why my father’s relatives, particularly my Ina (grandmother) and my Apah Masir (Uncle), never wanted me to visit. As an adult, I figured out why; my father’s hometown is a stronghold of the Abu Sayyaf Group, a Jihadist militant group that has sworn allegiance to ISIS and had wreaked havoc on the islands of Jolo and Basilan since the 1990’s. They had wanted to protect me.
This has led to an interesting home life. My father was the furthest thing from a terrorist; he was a police officer who was often assigned to different remote locations all over Mindanao. Because of this, I was raised solely by my mother. Then there was also the unorthodox situation of being my father’s second family; as a Muslim man, he could marry up to four wives. My mother, who was born a Catholic and raised me in the Catholic faith, was the second. His first family had, until his death, no idea that we even existed.
The current of my life seems strange to many people, but it was my normal. I was raised with a lot of love. As my mother was a college professor, she brought me to her MBA classes often. I would sit and listen and absorb everything she was saying about target audiences and financial management. She never pressured me to want to pursue higher education, but I wanted to be exactly like her. I still do.
Everything changed, however, when I entered my teen years. On one hand, I had found a passion for writing; I have kept a journal since I was 11, and then I soon expanded to blogging. By 13, I was published in Mindanews.com under the “Batang Mindanaw” section, and to this day I am one of its youngest contributors. By 14, I was a regular columnist for the Mindanao Times, the oldest newspaper in Davao. By 16, I published a book entitled “Haileystones: A Journey Through Time” with Mindanews Publications.
On the other hand, I suffered unimaginable losses. By the time I was 15 years old, I had lost both of my parents to cancer. My father died in June, and then my mother passed in December of the same year. I was lucky enough to have had relatives that were willing to pay my way through university, but I was otherwise left to my own devices.
My education is what saved me from falling into despair after everything that happened. I had wanted to be a journalist, but after my parents’ deaths, I grew even more determined to pursue higher education. While I relished the feeling of chasing after stories --my undergrad major, from the University of the Philippines, is in communication and media-- I found myself mostly drawn to the stories of the Bangsamoro people. Although the majority of Filipinos are Roman Catholic, there is a significant Muslim minority that make up the thirteen tribes of the Bangsamoro. Because of this, they have been given autonomy over their ancestral domains and are currently in the transition to become a parliamentary state, still under the Republic of the Philippines.
Everything changed when I had the opportunity to interview for Al Qalam Executive Director Mussolini Lidasan. He decided to take a chance on me. As the communications specialist of the institute, I write a lot: speeches, proposals, and even design programs that we then implement to our target beneficiaries in the Bangsamoro. With my boss’ appointment as a Member of Parliament (MP) to the Bangsamoro Transition Authority, we are also active in the political processes that brought about the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao. I have been, among other things, a documenter, facilitator, speaker, resource person, researcher, and organizer for various programs under the institute.
Given Al Qalam’s focus on dialogue, I have been privy to several discussions across different platforms on the dynamics of conflict. The motivations as to why people would join extremist groups, for example, vary across different socioeconomic groups. Those who are on the grassroots level cite a lack of basic services as to why they took up arms, while those who are in more urbanized settings cite social isolation and a lack of a sense of purpose. Given the complexity of the issues at hand, I have come to see that furthering my education through earning a master’s degree would be the best way for me to understand these issues further.
One professional accomplishment that I am proud of was being a part of the MSummit Moro National Youth Conference in 2018; 100 Moro youth from all over the Philippines were present at this event. During this time, we also presented the MPower Awards that awarded outstanding Moro youth in the school, community, and professional arenas. This initiative was done through the funding of the United States Embassy in Manila.
My work with the youth is what drew me to the University of Otago. I have had the opportunity to meet David Strachan, New Zealand Ambassador to the Philippines, when he visited the Al Qalam Institute earlier this year. It was during this visit where he spoke to students and staff members of the Ateneo de Davao to apply for further study to New Zealand universities. I knew that I wanted to pursue a master’s degree abroad, and the friendly nature and diverse cultural backgrounds that comprise the people of New Zealand piqued my interest. After further research, I found that the University of Otago offered a Master’s in Peace and Conflict Studies, which seemed a perfect fit for my work and interests. I did not hesitate to apply.
If given the opportunity to earn a Master’s in Peace and Conflict Studies, I would be able to contribute my experience in working directly with Moro communities, especially in youth engagement and with their fight to the right to self-determination. Given that I am Moro myself, I would also offer my perspective and insight towards how truth and reconciliation affects positive peace outcomes. I would also be motivated to return home and design research and programs around the concepts I would learn from this degree.
I have seen through my work just how damaging violence can be to entire communities, and it is situations like this that have drawn people to causing more harm. Transitional justice dictates that community healing is most effective when coming from a multi-sectoral, holistic approach. It is a lengthy process that considers both rehabilitation and reintroduction to society of those who have committed these abuses, and there are not enough people who understand truth and reconciliation under these terms. More importantly, I would want to understand public policy that relates directly to peacebuilding and good governance. It is here within these larger social structures where change can become most effective, even as I still work with people in the grassroots communities.
With this particular degree, and with the support of a New Zealand Scholarship under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, I would be able to use the knowledge I gained and apply it back to the communities we serve. I hope to complete this program as a full-time student within one year. It is also my hope that I start on time for Semester One in February of 2020.
The opportunity to study abroad, and at institutions such as the University of Otago, should not just be open to people like me who have had some level of privilege. I was fortunate enough to have had an education and to have reason to apply for programs like this. The people of the Bangsamoro, my people, deserve the same. I hope that, if I break through this particular glass ceiling, others will follow.
In Islam, much emphasis is given to the process of seeking knowledge, especially if it is for the benefit of the greater ummah. As a daughter of the current, I have been fortunate enough to be called to serve my people in this manner. My longing for family has become part of a greater longing for social justice and reform, and it is in this line of work where I have found my way home.

Conventionally, it has been seen that lakhs of students do search for some affordable and trustworthy platform to float the loan for their higher studies.  And often they are befuddled and sometimes got no inkling which will be the best platform for them to get the education loan for foreign study.
Aspirants from middle-class backgrounds are the ones who struggle the most in finding education loans, as many commercial banks and financial institutes follow certain rigid rules and policies for granting any loan. And the notable downside of these banks and financial institutes is that the borrower needs to have impeccable financial statements and sometimes even satisfactory credit history. Besides, he needs to have something for collateral security as well. And even if someone manages all of that somehow then still he must need some co-signers to share the responsibility in clearing debts, if required.
Moreover, obtaining credit through banks requires so much paperwork and a lot of running around makes it a lengthy and time-consuming task. And in addition, the borrower is still at a loss as there is no fixed rate for payments, it keeps on fluctuating as per the value of currency changes every time. And all along the high ceiling interest rates compiles up a bulky amount for the money lenders to repay with no additional benefits.
The one-stop solution for the best international education loan is MPOWER Financing. It facilitates in fulfilling the dreams of aspirants with greater caliber, regardless of income, family background, or gender. MPower has proved to be a mighty backbone in the sector of serving the students with educational loan needs on an international level.

How to Obtain a Student Loan Without A Cosigner
With the cost of law school on the rise, many students need to bridge the gap between scholarships and financial aid with loans, first federal and then private. Unfortunately, about 90% of new private student loans require a cosigner. In the absence of a willing or qualified cosigner, though, the good news is there are private lenders who will give out non-cosigned students loans.
Many of the lenders we list later in this article will offer loans to students with a caveat or two—namely, that you have a decent credit score,  good credit history and that you meet any other credit requirements established by the bank. Others judge your future earning capacity to ensure that you’ll be in a good position to repay them. Thankfully, as a graduate student, you’ll have had a few years to build your credit history and pay off credit cards such that the credit check should deliver good news.
Before you go shopping for the loan, prepare yourself for the private loan application and selection process to save time, hassle and money. We’ve included some helpful tips for you as you look for the best ways to finance your education.
How to shop for a student loan without a co-signer
Start with federal student loans.
Fill out the FAFSA (Free application for federal student aid) to apply for federal loans to initial meet your financial need. These loans, which are provided by the government, usually have low interest rates that are better than many private lenders. Direct unsubsidized loans are the most common and lowest-cost ways to cover graduate school costs.
Plan to take out direct loans before you move on to private loans as they are often more flexible and affordable. Federal loans are also eligible for income driven repayment and several different loan forgiveness programs, which will be important if you decide to take a public sector job.
Private loans can help you make up the cost of attendance difference between what federal loans will cover and what you need to pay for school. Be advised that private lenders don’t offer any loan forgiveness programs and normally don’t offer income-based repayment options. So, private student loan companies should be considered a lender of last resort but I know that many of you will need more money than your Stafford loans and Plus loans offer.
Related: How to Pay for Law School
Get your credit in order.
At the end of the day, lenders want to make sure that you can pay back the money that they lend you. The more creditworthy you are when you apply, the better your chances of approval and the lower your interest rates will be.
Check your credit score early and often as you prepare to apply for private student loans. Aim for a 690 or better FICO credit score to get the best loan terms.
Raise your credit score by disputing and correcting any errors on your credit report.
Pay your bills on time and keep your credit utilization low. Try not to spend more than 30% of your available credit at a given time, and try not to open too many new accounts. Taken together, these factors make up the majority of your credit score.
Compare apples to apples.
Take some time to go over the fine print of each loan offer. Obviously, lower interest rates will be more attractive, but also consider if there are additional student loan options that may suit you.
The option to postpone payments of the entire loan amount (e.g. hardship or deferment) may be something that may be important to you down the road. Also look at any application, origination, or late fees. See if your lender has any prepayment penalties and take them all into account as you figure out what the true cost of your loan will be.
When you receive all of the terms of your potential loan, use a student loan calculator to see exactly how much you can expect to pay each month. Factor in your APR’s, any fees or discounts and all of your repayment options to get a clear picture of what you’ll be facing when you graduate.
Look for a fixed interest rate.
While provide student loans will offer higher interest rates, a fixed interest rate (as opposed to a variable rate) will make sure that your loan repayment doesn’t increase over time. While I’m generally a fan of variable interest rates once you’re in the mode of paying off your loan, I think you can only make that decision once you’ve established your income and have regular recurring checks deposited into your checking account. For now, I’d stick with the fixed interest rate to ensure that you’re comfortable making monthly automatic payments under your repayment plan as soon as you graduate.
Think about refinancing in the future.
After graduation you may be able to refinance your student loan debt and secure a lower interest rate. Going through the effort of refinancing can save you money by reducing your monthly payments and it’s typically easy to check rates using a tool like Credible where you can check a bunch of interest rates at the same time.
Private lenders offering student loans without a cosigner
Now that you know what to look for to secure the best loan terms, here are some lenders to consider. All of these listed lenders provide private student loans to graduate students without a cosigner. You’ll find the most lenient, accessible lenders at the top of the list, though.
Ascent
Ascent offers non-cosigned private student loans. Their fixed rates start at 4.09% and cap at 13.03%. If you’re an upperclassmen or graduate student without a credit history, you may want to check out an Ascent loan.
The main issue with Ascent is their high interest rates. Those high rates are due to the fact that Ascent only requires a relatively low credit score of 540. Also, you don’t need you to have any income or cosigner when you apply. Rather than relying solely on your current financial situation, Ascent considers your future earning potential when they assess your ability to repay their loans. Their approval process will take into account your future earning potential rather than your current creditworthiness.
Ascent will also allow you to defer your loans while you’re in school. When you’re ready to repay, enrolling in auto-pay will net you a 1% cash back incentive or a .25% interest rate discount.
Sallie Mae
Sallie Mae is the top private student loan lender in the US. They offer private loans to most graduate students without a cosigner. Good credit is necessary for all applicants, but graduate students are still likely to get approved.
CommonBond
CommonBond provides loans to both undergraduate and graduate students. In many cases, they’ll lend to graduate students—especially those enrolled in med school—with requiring a cosigner.
CommonBond also offers a low origination fee and several different repayment options, including a residency deferral so that you can manage your loans gradually as you enter the workforce.
Citizen’s Bank
Citizen’s Bank will also lend to graduate students without a cosigner. They do require that you have good credit, but will not charge you and application or origination fees.
They offer lengthy repayment terms, from 5-15 years depending on how much you borrow. Citizen’s Bank will shave up to .25% off of your interest rate if you enroll in autopay. You can earn an additional .25% interest rate discount if you already have another account with them.
Discover
Discover will establish private student loans without a cosigner, but they do insist on good credit. If your credit history isn’t established or your credit score isn’t high enough, Discover will require a cosigner. International students can apply for loans from Discover, but they must be secured by a cosigner who is a US citizen.
MPOWER
MPOWER offers private student loans to international students or students with DACA (deferred action for Childhood arrivals) status. MPOWER offers 7.52% to 13.63% interest rates for individuals from 180 different countries. DACA students don’t need a social security number to qualify and MPOWER doesn’t require an established credit history for approval.
How to shop around for the best deal
Once you’ve reached the maximum federal loans provided through the department of education, private lenders offer some competitive selections to make sure that you have the money that you need for tuition. The private loan options listed in this article offer a great way to finance your education.
Before starting the application process, make sure you have everything in order for your applications. Every lender wants to know what risk they’ll take on by lending money to a client, so making sure that you’re creditworthy is valuable to everyone on this list. Sallie Mae and Ascent offer loans to most graduate students, but you’ll improve your chances of approval and get better rates with a higher credit score and good credit history. MPOWER and Discover will provide private student loans to international students and those with DACA status. MPOWER doesn’t need a cosigner to do this.
The other three lenders—CommonBond, Citizen’s Bank and Discover—will lend to graduates student who have good credit. To make their programs stand out, Citizen’s Bank and Ascent will even provide incentives like cash back or a discount on your interest rate to encourage timely repayment of your loan. CommonBond offers a residency deferral program for med school students.
In short, it’s possible to secure student loans without a cosigner, and as an independent student you do have some choices. Each of these lenders is available to help you bridge the gap towards financing your professional education on your own. Weigh their requirements and benefits so that you’re able to find the best loans for your needs.
