/r/Exo has this fun poll going around to vote for favourite songs and the results for Lay’s discography just came out and I am so goddamn disappointed lol.

I saw that there were only 18 participants in the poll, which was considerably lower than the poll for Baekhyun’s discography, which had 45 participants.

By now, I know that Yixing just isn’t as popular with the usual kpop crowd for several reasons I will not get into, and /r/Exo definitely has more fans that are from the kpop than cpop side of things. So I’m going to guess that a lot of people who voted on Yixing’s poll just...weren’t very familiar with his discography? Other than Soul, every song that placed has a music video, which is what led me to that conclusion.

Like, I understand the significance of Lit, but you guys cannot convince me that that is the best song on the album. In fact, none of the title songs on Yixing’s albums/singles are my favourite songs lol. Or am I the weird one?

I was already super wary when round 2 of voting took place because A LOT of my favourite songs were voted out in round 1. Literally all of my favourite songs from Namanana were voted out by round 2 and I was like “...something’s not right fellas.”

Ah well, this was just supposed to be for fun anyway. And like, I expected this. /r/Exo is definitely more Yixing-friendly than any other kpop sub, but he still isn’t that popular compared to the other members. I’m just glad that /r/Exo is the one place on Reddit you can talk about Chinese idols in kpop without the entire thread devolving into Sinophobia and politics.

Anyway the conclusion is that Yixing has some great songs. I will admit that his songs are nowhere near as “perfect” as Exo songs, probably because Exo’s songs have the entire backing of SM’s production team, whereas Yixing tries to self-produce and has a smaller team. So his songs are nowhere near as polished as Exo songs are. But because he’s one person composing/producing for himself, he has room to experiment.

There are tons of Yixing songs that are amazing but could never be an Exo song because there is no rap break or it’s not dance-y enough, etc. But that’s okay. At this point, he’s really developed his own style, first the more cpop sounding sort of stuff, then his more hip hop sound, and now his foray into mpop. Iunno, it’s fun to see what he comes up with because I think he’s in a position now where he doesn’t have to write hit songs, and can instead explore his artistry.

Okay this post got away from me, it was just originally just about my disappointment at the polls and then ended in me gushing about Yixing’s music.
