i live in the uk and have just applied to study pharmacy (mPharm), starting next year. I'm quite excited about it but still am not sure if I'm making the right choice, particularly because I've struggled quite a bit with chemistry and also am really passionate about some other subjects too like english and film. how did you find the experience of studying pharmacy? what's your favourite part of the job so far? is it something you would recommend in terms of being worth the effort and time?

Hello!!!! I am so sorry that this has gone unanswered for so long, it’s been a hell of a few months!

I’m glad you’re excited for it!! It is completely natural to have doubts though, I remember in sixth form all of us had doubts after seeing what our friends were applying for and how passionate they seemed about their subjects. Then we realised we all thought that each other is super passionate and it was just some classic imposter syndrome!

I really enjoy studying pharmacy! Even now, I’m doing a postgrad and it’s a huge pain but I’m enjoying the learning itself. Pharmacy degrees are quite unusual in that it starts off super sciencey, so like my entire first year was science - however there was a lot of overlap with A level chemistry so it wasn’t too intense, and then gradually it increased in how hard it was. I did find all the lecturers were really supportive though! As the years went on, it became less science focused and more clinical, which I enjoyed a lot more as it’s the more day to day pharmacy.

In terms of the job, I work in the hospital. I’ve only ever done hospital pharmacy since leaving uni, so can’t comment on other sectors such as community or industry. Generally, I like it. Our pay is good (in my opinion), we’re struggling with lack of staff at the moment- but where isn’t? And I do enjoy making a difference to patients. The best part of my job is by far when I talk to patients and help them get the best out of their medicines, or when I make good interventions like switching someone to liquids to go down their feeding tube. I’m currently working in palliative care and it’s so lovely to see the impact that you can have on patients, and my hospice team really value having pharmacy input. The worst part is by far the staffing levels and not having enough time to do the job I want to do- although where I am is 5 years away from you now and I am very hopeful that things will be improving by then (or that the nhs will have collapsed and we will be living in a dystopian nightmare - in which case they’ll still need medicines so is a solid career choice!) all jokes aside, for me I would say it is worth the effort. I get paid well, I generally enjoy my job, and I like having a defined career path planned out. It is certainly hard work, and doing my postgrad now is genuinely painful, but it’s a good career!

Also. If you get to pharmacy school and think oh no I hate this, that’s fine!!!! You can absolutely see what you think, and change subjects. You can take the rest of the year out and switch after, there is absolutely no race to get to where you want and there is no shame in not knowing what you want and trying things out. I moved jobs after pre-reg which turned out to be a big mistake, and moved again after a year which has put me a year behind all my friends in my postgrad. But it doesn’t matter? It’s taken me so long to realise this but you can do things at whatever pace you want, and I am happy now after making that second move even though it put me a ‘year behind’. If you want to see how you get on in pharmacy school, and then want to change to English, that is TOTALLY fine. At the end of the day, as long as you are studying something you love, that’s what matters and it doesn’t matter how long it takes to get there 🫶🏻

Ranjitha arrived at 3 P.M. and was warmly greeted by Sathyavathy. Impressed by the factory’s advanced equipment, she began her investigation, starting with the quality department. After a detailed search, she found no evidence of a bomb. She turned to Kumaravel and asked, "Do you have any professional enemies?" Kumaravel replied, "No, we don't have any enemies. Why do you ask?" Ranjitha explained, "This kind of threat to the pharmaceutical industry is unusual, and based on my experience, I suspect it's just a prank. However, for your peace of mind, we can call in the bomb squad." Kumaravel was confused, "A prank? But why would anyone do such a thing?" Ranjitha smiled calmly, "Yes, I believe it's just for fun. But I'll call the squad to confirm, just to be safe." Within minutes, the bomb squad arrived and conducted their checks. After thorough investigation, they confirmed that there was no bomb. Relieved, Ranjitha turned to Kumaravel and said, "See? No bomb. Now, let me tell you why I'm confident." Kumaravel looked at her, still uncertain. Ranjitha pointed to the calendar on the wall. "Today is April 1st, Mr. Kumaravel. April Fool's Day." Kumaravel froze in realization, his anxiety dissolving into laughter. He had been the victim of an April Fool's prank. Both he and Sathyavathy were relieved that no harm was done, and they thanked Ranjitha for her expertise. With the mystery solved, Corporate 99’s staff members continued their work, safe and secure, as Ranjitha’s intelligence and keen observation were applauded.
