AMPHIBIANS FROM THE SKY

On May 5, 1786, a six-month drought in Haiti ended when a strong east wind blew across the sky and a large quantity of black eggs rained down on Port-au-Prince. The following day the eggs hatched, revealing tadpolelike creatures that shed their skins several times. Some of the species were saved in a flask of water. When English naturalist Philip Henry Gosse visited the island over half a century later, he told of hearing croaking in the marshy ground near Port-au-Prince and was told by the islanders that the frogs had arrived by falling from the sky.

In 1887, County Durham, Edward Cook took shelter with his horse and cart under the gables of a cottage and watched while thumbnail-sized frogs rained down. In 1891, during an intense thunderstorm in Bournemouthe, a witness saw hundreds of small yellow frogs dashed to the ground; some of them became impaled on the furze bushes, and the stink of their rotting bodies lasted for days. During World War II, in Staffordshire, England, millions of frogs fell from the sky for over an hour.

In 1954, Sylvia Mowday was in Sutton Park, Birmingham, with her four-year-old daughter when a shower of wee frogs covered the ground for fifty square yards. They thudded and bounced off of the child's little red umbrella. In 1973, in Arkansas, golfers watched thousands of frogs come down with a rainstorm. In 1977, in Canet-Plage, France, peasize frogs ricocheted off the hoods of vehicles. In 1987, Gloucestershire, England, tiny pink frogs fell at several locations. They turned out to be albinos and only appeared pink due to their blood showing through their skin.
