The Nanny-Chapter 2
Defeated by her inability to sell any makeup, and her total failure at faking her way into a job as a nanny, Brittany returns to her parentsâ apartment in Flushing. Her mother is in the kitchen cooking dinner, and she feels exactly twelve years old as she sinks down onto the couch. This definitely isnât where she saw herself at nearly thirty, and when she looks at her phone to see text messages from Sugar complaining about working with Quinn, she just throws it to the side. Her life is in total shambles, and all she needs is some dose of good luck to turn it around.
âMa, what am I supposed to do? I dropped out of college to work in Daniâs stupid bridal shop, I have no real skills, no girlfriend, and Iâm living with my mother.â
âItâs no picnic living with you either, kid.â Whitney Piece opens the doorway between the kitchen and the living room and holds a raw chicken in her hands. âYouâre really butting in on mine and your fatherâs private time.â
âEw, Mom, gross. I donât need to hear about that. Iâm having enough of a terrible day.â
âI say you march back down to that Ms. Lopezâs mansion and give her a piece of your mind.â
âWhatâs that even going to do? She didnât do anything to me. If Iâm going to give anyone a piece of my mind, itâs going to be Dani Fucking Harper for cheating on me and firing me. Sheâs the one that got me into this situation.â
âYouâre the one that got yourself into this situation. I warned you about Dani when you started dating her. You wouldnât let me look you up with Jeannieâs nice son Artie who would have married you and made you a millionaire. A millionaire, you hear me? He just sold his first tech company for five-hundred million dollars. But instead, you chose Dani with the bridal shop.â
âWhy do you have to make everything worse? I went on a date with Artie, and he so wasnât into reenacting my Lady and the Tramp fantasy and kept talking to me like he was some kind of rapper. Itâs not like I expected Dani to cheat on me.â
âShe was shifty, I would have expected it.â
âGee, thanks Mom.â Brittany rolls her eyes, and then, from where it landed under the couch when she tossed it, Brittanyâs phone begins to ring. She stoops down to pick it up, and she furrows her brow when she sees a strange 212 area code light up the screen. âI guess I should take this, itâs probably someone calling to tell me that I have to sell my kidneys in order to survive the next month.â
âOnly sell one, or else youâll die, and your father and I will be responsible for paying back that ten thousand dollars in student loans you took out.â
âYouâre just full of hope today, arenât you?â Brittany sighs and presses the accept call button on her phone. âHello?â
âHello, is this Miss Pierce?â
âUm, yeah, whoâs this?â
âSantana Lopez, we met earlier.â
âRight, how could I forget the gorgeous millionaire with the big mansion?â
âGorgeous millionaire, Iâm listening.â Whitney sits down next to Brittany, and she shoos her away.
âIâve reconsidered what I said earlier. You seemed to have a way with Tyler, and Iâd like to hire you on a trial basis, assuming you can move in today and start immediately.â
âMove in? Itâs a live-in position?â
âWell yes, is that going to be a problem?â
âIâll be there as soon as I can pack my bags. Oh, thank you, Ms. Lopez, thank you! You wonât regret this.â
âI have some reason to believe that I willâŠbut Iâll see you this afternoon.â
In less than an hour, Brittany packs up everything she owns and is in the back of a cab headed toward Manhattan. She thinks she probably should be nervous, but sheâs not, sheâs totally got this and sheâs going to show Ms. Lopez that sheâs totally wrong about thinking sheâs going to regret hiring her. Kids absolutely love her, sheâs sure that sheâll win over Tyler with his fake blood, Abigail with her whining and Valerie with her sad eyes. Itâs going to be a total piece of cake, she just knows it.
âMiss Pierce.â The butler opens the door when she gets there and hurries out to the cab to go help her with her things. Most of the stuff in the apartment she shared with Dani wasnât hers, so she really just has four suitcases chock full of clothes and a big Rubbermaid bin full of shoes.
Brittany looks around the house and itâs surprisingly quiet. Something about it reminds her of The Sound of Music, her absolute favorite comfort movie when she was a kid, and she eyes the drapes, hoping she doesnât have to teach herself how to sew in order to make the kids play clothes. Shaking her head, she moves over to the side table and reaches out to touch what is probably a very expensive crystal vase when she hears footsteps and then retracts her hand.
âIâd appreciate if you didnât touch the antiques.â Santana puts her hand on her hip and cocks her head to the side. âAnd I expect I wonât have to watch over you while youâre watching the children.â
âWhy do you have antiques in a house full of kids anyway?â
âWe taught them from a young age what was theirs to touch and what wasnât. Iâve never had a problem before.â
âEven with Tyler?â
âWellââ Santana begins and then is stopped by the sound of screeching coming into the room.
âMommy! Look at my dolly! Tyler ripped her head right off and put it in the toilet bowl!â Abigail cried.
âI did not!â Tyler tumbles into the room. âSheâs a big fat liar. She did it herself just to get me in trouble.â
âA new doll for Abigail will be coming right out of your allowance, young man.â Santana furrows her brow and looks between the children. âBoth of you, say hello to Miss Pierce.â
âMiss Pierce? No way, Iâm just Brittany.â
âIâd prefer if the children called you Miss Pierce.â
âAnd Iâd prefer if they called me Brittany.â Brittany challenges. âListen, Abigail, Iâm an expert doll fixer. Why donât you come upstairs with me and weâll get her all taken care of?â
An hour later, Abigailâs doll is fixed, Tyler is distracted with a new bucket of Legos that Kurtâthe butler, now that Brittany has learned his nameâbrought out and Brittany is almost finished unpacking. Sheâs not sure where Valerie is, though she thinks she should probably be aware of that, and she wonders exactly how one nannies a fifteen-year-old. Itâs not like she needs dolls fixed or lessons in not using ketchup as fake blood, but Brittany is sure sheâll learn on the job.
âMiss Pierce.â Kurt knocks on the door to her bedroom and Brittany cringes a little at everyone in this house and their formalities. âDinner is served.â
Brittany makes her way down the stairs and into the dining room, but when she gets there, she realizes that there are only four places set. She wrinkles her nose a little and looks to Kurt, who is puzzled by her expression. He holds out his hand toward the kitchen, apparently assuming thatâs where sheâll eat and Brittanyâs eyebrows raise.
âThe nanny normally eats in there on her own while Ms. Lopez has meals with the children.â
âWell thatâs ridiculous.â Brittany goes into the kitchen and picks up the plate set for her, carrying into the dining room. âIsnât a nanny supposed to be part of the family? Iâll be eating with them.â
Valerie comes into the dining room first and gives Brittany the same strange look that Kurt did. Brittany is in utter shock that any other nanny put up with this and she simply unfolds her napkin and puts it on her lap like sheâs seen people do in movies. At home, she mostly used paper towels as napkins and canât really understand why anyone would think cloth napkins were a better idea, but she guesses she may as well learn how to fit in with these rich people.
âYou know youâre supposed to eat in the kitchen.â Valerie tells her, standing behind her own chair.
âMaybe thatâs how it used to be, but if Iâm going to spend all my time with you, I think I should at least be able to eat with you.â
âMiss Pierce.â Santana comes in, followed by Abigail and Tyler. âYouâreââ
âSupposed to eat in the kitchen, I know. Iââ Brittany tries to think of the most appropriate response to her new boss. âI think itâs better for the kids to see me eating with the family, then they know they should respect me.â
âWell. Alright then.â Santana sits down.
Dinner is the weirdest thing Brittany has ever experienced. Not a single one of them talk. She keeps trying to start a conversation, get everyone to at least pretend theyâre at the table with other people, but no one takes the bait. She watches Tyler hide his broccoli in his napkin, watches Abigail obsessively sort her food, watches Valerie eat more slowly than sheâs ever seen a human being eat and watches Santana look down at her phone every thirty seconds. Then, just when she feels like sheâs about to explode, Rachel Berry barges into the dining room with a flourish.
âI just got off the phone with Brody Weston, he wants to have dinner with us tonight.â She shrieks. âThis could be our chance to land Broadwayâs biggest star. Lin Manuel Miranda doesnât stand a chance against us if we get him!â
âLetâs go.â Santana stands up, pushing her plate away. âMiss Pierce, I expect youâll be alright getting the children to bed?â
âYouâve got it. What, like ten oâclock?â
âNo. More like eight oâclock. Valerie can stay up until nine-thirty.â
âRightâŠâ Brittany shakes her head, thinking maybe Valerie is way too old to have a nine-thirty bedtime, but sheâs not going to argue with her boss. âUh, have fun.â
âMiss Pierce.â Rachelâs voice gets high and shrill. âWe are not doing this for fun.â
They leave the dining room and Brittany looks around at the three kids. Abigail looks crestfallen, Tyler looks like heâs planning something and Valerie just looks completely aloof to the entire situation. Maybe itâs weird, but Brittany wants to know more about Ms. Lopez. Sheâs living in her house after all and if feels weird that theyâve exchanged maybe one-hundred words. But sheâs not exactly about to ask, the woman was weird enough about her sitting at the dinner table with them and even weirder about the kids calling her Brittany, so she thinks if she actually asks something personal her head will explode.
âSoâŠwhatâs up guys?â Brittany asks. âYou know thereâs no law that you have to be quiet at the dinner table, right?â
âMom would rather we are.â Abigail pipes up. âSheâs usually really busy doing work on her phone.â
âWell guess what, sheâs not here, so talk away.â
Brittany isnât surprised that sheâs still met with utter silence, but she rolls her eyes a little. Itâs clear that these kids have no idea how to just be kids and she thinks of The Sound of Music again. Maybe she does need to learn how to saw so she can make them play clothes out of the curtains, bring them to Central Park and let them run around and scream. It seems like it would do each of them good, probably Tyler, especially, since he seems to need to get into mischief to actually express himself.
After dinner is done, all three kids go to their rooms. Brittany is pretty sure that she hears Valerieâs door slam, but she canât be sure. Figuring this is just what they do, Brittany goes into the kitchen to try and get some dirt out of Kurt. She could see a gleam in his eye when she met him earlier in the day and she just knows heâll be willing to spill some gossip.
âSo, whatâs the deal Kurt? Tell me all about these people.â
âMiss Pierceââ
âOkay, letâs just put an end to that right now. Brittany, okay?â
âBrittany. Fine. But seriously, youâve been here like three hours and you already want me to gossip?â
âI know you live for it.â Brittany laughs a little. âSo, tell me everything there is to know about Ms. Lopez.â
âYou got me.â Kurt rolls his eyes at himself. âThank God I finally have someone to talk to, I wait all month for my butlerâs association meetings to just gab about everything.â
âI knew it! So, whatâs her deal?â
âSheâs trying to be this big-time producer, sheâs like, insanely jealous of Lin Manuel Miranda, you canât even bring him up around her, sheâll go absolutely apeshit.â
âBut Ms. Berryââ
âYeah, she does it all the time, I think she thinks it motivates her, which, honestly, it probably does. But basically, theyâre always having these investors fall through every time they think theyâre going to have this big hit. They passed on Dear Evan Hansen, so, thereâs that.â
âAnd Ms. Berry? Are they likeâŠtogether?â
âOh my God, disgusting.â Kurt feigns a gag. âBut actually, Ms. Berry wishes. She follows Ms. Lopez around like a little puppy dog and is basically ready to throw herself in her arms at any given second. Itâs so gross to watch, but itâs like a car wreck, I canât look away.â
âAnd what about the kidsâ dad?â
âMama, actually. Do you have like no gaydar? I could sense you were one of us from a mile away.â
âHeyâŠIâm bi.â Brittany crosses her arms over her chest.
âStill one of us. And she died two years ago, she was hit by a car and it destroyed Ms. Lopez. Miss Abigail was only three, she doesnât remember her at all and Mr. Tyler was four so he has a few memories. Miss Valerie is still angry.â
âI can see that. She has barely said two words to me.â
âShe doesnât want to get attached, you donât even know how many nannies weâve gone through around here.â
âSo why did Ms. Lopez decide to hire me anyway?â
âDesperation?â Kurt chuckles. âAnd also, I may have planted the seed in her head.â
âWhy?â
âBecause you looked like a kicked puppy when you showed up here. So now that Iâve told you about her, whatâs your deal.â
âI mean, I got dumped and fired on the same dayâŠby the same person, so thatâs pretty much how I ended up here. The only thing I know about kids is from hanging out with my little cousins, my mom is desperate for me to get married, thatâs about it.â
âHmm.â Kurt looks off into the distance and Brittany furrows her brow.
âWhat?â
âHuh? No, nothing, I was just thinking about something.â
âCâmon, you have to tell me!â
âYouâll find out in due time, I just know it.â

What Should I Know About Assisted Living?
Almost everyone awaits retirement as a time to relax and enjoy life. However, often we get too busy with daily responsibilities to fully enjoy the free time we've worked so hard to earn. That's where a change to assisted living can make a big difference.
Although Massachusetts assisted living communities tend to be very well regulated and of unusually good quality, there are certainly big differences between them. People who are familiar with many communities tend to prefer those that stand out by putting much more emphasis on helping keep residents active, busy, and involved than most other facilities. This philosophy can often be manifested by a very warm and personal feeling that is easily conveyed to prospective residents who stop by to speak to current residents and ask about their feelings about living in New Horizons. In fact, one of the most important considerations for anyone considering assisted living is to speak directly to existing residents of any particular facility.
Most seniors who consider this shift to assisted living are very concerned with maintaining their dignity and independence. Their ages usually range between 65 and 100 years, with an average of 80 to 80 years. Moving to a good residential environment with quality accommodations, good neighbors, and a solid program can often be a great benefit to older people who have previously lived alone. In fact, very often "they come back to life once they no longer have to worry about the burdens of living alone."
One of the most common sources of confusion for those seeking to retire is the challenge of correctly understanding the difference between independent retirement and assisted living. The first is typically a residential apartment living arrangement where the elderly share a common space, but can maintain their independence with little or no help. Typically, the best facilities provide three meals a day for all residents, plus utilities, some transportation, housekeeping, etc., as well as reservation assistance, if needed, and a wide variety of social activities. In Massachusetts, communities often combine independent living and assistance options in one facility.
Similar to independent living, assisted living is a housing option for older adults who need help with activities of daily living such as dressing, eating, bathing, wandering, or using the bathroom, but who do not require 24-hour nursing care. They can still live independently with some help, but that assistance is generally necessary on a daily basis. In many ways, assisted living can be viewed as "independent living with an added bonus!"
MA assisted living retirement communities and retirement homes for senior citizens are among the best. Many people deeply seek and appreciate the opportunity to enjoy their "golden years" in a very caring and convenient assisted living environment near Boston, Worcester, Southboro, Hudson, Northborough, Westboro, Framingham and Fitchburg, Marlborough and Woburn, MA. Other well-populated nearby communities with quality assisted living options include Sudbury, Wayland, Wellesley, Waltham, Weston and the other cities along Route MA 128. Often the majority of older people looking in these communities prefer the many benefits of a large community, with the intimacy of a small assisted living home where everyone knows your name.
Assisted living facilities should not be confused with a nursing home, but with a busy Massachusetts retirement community. Most of these communities are non-sectarian senior communities in the Boston area that could offer frequent on-campus religious services and easy access to others. Some include at least weekly Protestant and Jewish services on site and a daily Catholic mass. Enjoying assisted living in the western metropolitan area with elegant, low-cost and affordable gourmet meals can really make a difference in the lives of older people.

Monday Motivation | Go Ahead, Hit Send!
Kick off your week with Monday Motivation!
Tip of the week
Wondering whether or not to send a thank you note after an interview? The answer is yes! The employers you spoke with took time out of their schedules to meet with you, so letting them know you appreciated that time is always a good move. This may help to set you apart from other applicants if they do not take the time to demonstrate their appreciation. A thank you note can most easily be sent over in the form of a thoughtful, but brief email (check for grammatical errors!) after the interview. Try to remember to ask for a business card from those you interview with if you donât already have that. If you cannot locate their email addresses, LinkedIn messages may be an option, as well as hand-written notes delivered to the office.
This weekâs highlighted jobs:
Development Coordinator The Renaissance Society Chicago, IL
Arts Program Manager Bronx Childrenâs Museum Bronx, NY
Digital Image Specialist Asian Art Museum San Francisco, CA

Phylicia Rashad
Phylicia Rashad or RashÄd /ËfÉȘliËÊÉËrÉËÊÉd/ (born June 19, 1948) is an American actress, singer and stage director. She is known for her role as Clair Huxtable on the long-running NBC sitcom The Cosby Show (1984â92), which earned her Emmy Award nominations in 1985 and 1986. She was dubbed "The Mother" of the African-American community at the 2010 NAACP Image Awards.
In 2004, Rashad became the first black actress to win the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play, which she won for her role in the revival of A Raisin in the Sun. Her other Broadway credits include Into the Woods (1988), Jelly's Last Jam (1993), Gem of the Ocean (2004), and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (2008). She won a NAACP Image Award when she reprised her A Raisin in the Sun role in the 2008 television adaptation. She has also appeared in the films For Colored Girls (2010), Good Deeds (2012), and Creed (2015).
Early life
Rashad was born Phylicia Ayers-Allen in Houston, Texas. Her mother, Vivian Ayers, is a Pulitzer Prize-nominated artist, poet, playwright, scholar, and publisher. Phylicia's father, Andrew Arthur Allen, (d. 1984), was an orthodontist. Rashad's siblings are jazz-musician brother Tex (Andrew Arthur Allen, Jr., born 1945), sister Debbie Allen (born 1950), an actress, choreographer, and director, and brother Hugh Allen (a real estate banker in North Carolina). While Rashad was growing up, her family moved to Mexico, and as a result, Rashad speaks Spanish fluently.
Rashad studied at Howard University, graduating magna cum laude in 1970 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. She is also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. She was initiated into the Alpha Chapter during her tenure at Howard University.
Theatre
Rashad first became known for her stage work with a string of Broadway credits, including Deena Jones in Dreamgirls (she was Sheryl Lee Ralph's understudy until leaving the show in 1982 after being passed over as Ralph's full-time replacement) and playing a Munchkin in The Wiz for three and a half years. In 1978, she released the album Josephine Superstar, a disco Concept album telling the life story of Josephine Baker. The album was mainly written and produced by Jacques Morali and Rashad's second husband Victor Willis, original lead singer and lyricist of the Village People. She met Willis while they were both cast in The Wiz.
Other Broadway credits include August: Osage County, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Gem of the Ocean, Raisin in the Sun (2004 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play/Drama Desk Award), Blue, Jelly's Last Jam, Into the Woods, and Ain't Supposed to Die a Natural Death. Off-Broadway credits include Lincoln Centerâs productions of Cymbeline and Bernarda Alba; Helen, The Story and Everybody's Ruby at the Public Theater; The Negro Ensemble Company productions of Puppet Play, Zooman and the Sign, Sons and Fathers of Sons, In an Upstate Motel, Weep Not For Me, and The Great Mac Daddy; Lincoln Center's production of Ed Bullins' The Duplex; and The Sirens at the Manhattan Theatre Club. In regional theatre, she performed as Euripides' Medea and in Blues for an Alabama Sky at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia. Other regional theatres at which she has performed are the Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. and the Huntington Theatre in Boston.
Rashad was the first black actress of any nationality to win the Best Actress (Play) Tony Award, which she won for her 2004 performance as Lena Younger in a revival of the play A Raisin in the Sun by playwright Lorraine Hansberry. She was nominated for the same award the following year, for Gem of the Ocean. Several Black women have won in the Best Actress (Musical) category, including the late Virginia Capers, who won in 1973 for her portrayal of Lena in the musical adaptation of Hansberry's play, entitled Raisin. Rashad also won the 2004 Drama Desk award for Best Actress in a Play for A Raisin in the Sun by tying (split award) with Viola Davis for the play Intimate Apparel.
In 2007, Rashad made her directorial debut with the Seattle Repertory Theatre's production of August Wilsonâs Gem of the Ocean. More recently, in early 2014 Rashad directed a revival of Fences, also by Wilson, at the McCarter Theatre in Princeton, NJ, which ran to generally positive reviews, and continued an ongoing focus on Wilson's work, including a well-received production of Ma Rainey's Black Bottom that she directed at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles in late 2016.
In 2008, Rashad starred on Broadway as Big Mama in an all African-American production of Tennessee Williams's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Cat on a Hot Tin Roof directed by her sister Debbie Allen. She appeared alongside stage veterans James Earl Jones (Big Daddy) and Anika Noni Rose (Maggie), as well as film actor Terence Howard, who made his Broadway debut as Brick. In 2009, she appeared as Violet Weston, the drug-addicted matriarch of Tracy Lett's award-winning play August: Osage County at the Music Box Theatre.
From March 17 to May 1, 2016, Rashad played the lead role of Shelah in Tarell Alvin McCraney's play Head of Passes at The Public Theater. Her performance was positively reviewed.
Film and television
Rashad received a career boost when she joined the cast of the ABC soap opera One Life to Liveïżœïżœto play publicist Courtney Wright in 1983. She is best known for the role of attorney Clair Huxtable on the NBC sitcom The Cosby Show. The show, which ran from 1984 to 1992, starred Bill Cosby as obstetrician Heathcliff "Cliff" Huxtable, and focused on their life with their five children. In 1985, Rashad co-hosted the NBC telecast of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade with Pat Sajak and Bert Convy.
When Cosby returned to TV comedy in 1996 with CBS's Cosby, he called on Rashad to play Ruth Lucas, his character's wife. The pilot episode had been shot with Telma Hopkins, but Cosby then fired the executive producer and replaced Hopkins with Rashad. The sitcom ran from 1996 to 2000. That year, Cosby asked Rashad to work on his animated television series Little Bill, in which the actress voiced Bill's mother, Brenda, until the show's end in 2004. She also played a role in the pre-show of the Dinosaur ride at Walt Disney World's Animal Kingdom theme park as Dr. Helen Marsh, the head of the Dino Institute.
Rashad played "Kill Moves" wealthy mother on Everybody Hates Chris on December 9, 2007. In 2007 she appeared as Winnie Guster in the Psych episode Gus's Dad May Have Killed an Old Guy. She returned to the role in 2008, in the episode Christmas Joy.
In February 2008, Rashad portrayed Lena Younger in the television film adaptation of A Raisin in the Sun, directed by Kenny Leon. Starring core members of the cast of the 2004 Broadway revival at the Royale Theatre of Lorraine Hansberry's 1959 play, including Audra McDonald as Ruth Younger, and Sean Combs as Walter Lee Younger. The television film adaption debuted at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival and was broadcast by ABC on February 25, 2008. According to Nielsen Media Research, the program was watched by 12.7 million viewers and ranked #9 in the ratings for the week ending March 2, 2008.
In November 2010, Rashad featured as Gilda in the ensemble cast in the Tyler Perry film For Colored Girls, based on the play For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf by Ntozake Shange. Rashad explained in an interview with Vibe Movies & TV in 2010, that "I saw the original Broadway play. I thought it was amazing how such a story that wasnât pretty was poetry. Usually poetry is about lofty things and this was the poetry of speech and the movement of everyday people. I found a little bit of it off-putting to tell you the truth, because it was so angry when I saw it. And I think Tyler Perry has added an element here that wasn't in the original stage production, and that is the necessity for taking responsibility for one's own self otherwise you are just living to die. That is where he wrote the line [in the film], "You gotta take some responsibility in this. Otherwise you are just living to die".
In 2012, she starred in another Tyler Perry movie Good Deeds. Also in 2012, Rashad played Clairee Belcher in the remake of Steel Magnolias (the role originated by Olympia Dukakis). This version has an all African American A-list cast, including Queen Latifah as M'Lynn, Jill Scott as Truvy, Condola RashÄd as Shelby, Adepero Oduye as Annelle, and Alfre Woodard as Ouiser.
In 2016, Rashad was cast as a recurring guest star in the role of Diana DuBois in the third season of the Lee Daniels-produced Empire television series on Fox.
In 2017, Rashad portrayed Bishop Yvette A. Flunder, pastor of The City of Refuge Church in San Francisco, CA, as past of the Dustin Lance Black mini-series When We Rise. Her appearance in show highlighted the compassion of the church, the commitment of its leadership and the loving home the church provides to minister in the tough, primarily African-American community in San Francisco.
Personal life
Rashad's first marriage, in 1972, was to dentist William Lancelot Bowles, Jr. They had one son, William Lancelot Bowles III, who was born the following year. The marriage ended in 1975. Rashad then married Victor Willis (original lead singer of the Village People, whom she met during the run of The Wiz) in 1978. Their divorce was finalized in 1982.
She married former NFL wide receiver and sportscaster Ahmad RashÄd on December 14, 1985. It was a third marriage for both of them and she took his last name. They were married after he proposed to her during a pregame show for a nationally televised Thanksgiving Day football game between the New York Jets and the Detroit Lions on November 28, 1985. Their daughter, Condola Phyleia RashÄd, was born on December 11, 1986 in New York. The couple divorced in early 2001.

Growing up in the Weston household had been like growing up in a royal English court. The rules were tight and restricting, expectant that the children of Richard and Caroline Weston would be of the utmost importance in their small society. As much as you could call the Medina neighborhood of Seattle high society. It wasnât the Upper East Side, but it liked to think that it had enough merit to be compared to Americaâs prized piece of land. The Weston children were groomed  to rise above their small segment of the Pacific Northwest and take on the world with the kind of business sense that had put Richard Weston at the top of not only Seattleâs social ladder, but the company that his father had built before him. It was a big investment for a business that didnât sit inside of one of the countryâs largest business hubs, but it thrived regardless.
Something about this way of growing up never sat well with Stella, the youngest of the Weston twins. She would put on the pretty dresses and flowers for parties to appease her motherâs judgmental glares - but there were always high tops hidden under hems, boys boxer briefs under the mini skirts, and smudges of dirt under the fingernails that were always painted and kept in shape. There was nothing about Stella Weston that screamed she wanted to be a part of the family fortune or an heir to the throne of a company that she couldnât believe in. Sheâd rather spend her days outside on a skateboard with her friends from Beacon Hill and West Seattle. Or curled up in bed reading comic books, star charts, and Hawkingâs Grand Design or the science of black holes. The parties with boys that stared at her chest and girls looking to be her friend for her name bored Stella out of her mind. It just wasnât a lifestyle that she ever wanted.
As a child and as she grew older, Stella loved music and the piano. It was a love that her parents couldnât understand, as they believed in the work of a business and not that of an artist. They appeased her with a keyboard on her twelfth birthday, though she knew it was mostly to keep her dirty hands off of their prized grand piano in the foyer. It become one of the most used objects in the house and one that annoyed her family when she decided to pull out the headphones and grace the halls of their large home with her musical tracks. For the most part, sheâd taught herself how to navigate the keyboard but extracurricular music classes at her school helped her hone the skill beyond what she could do without help.
Another one of the loves Stella had come upon early was a passion for outer space, the stars, and the science of their lifespans. Sheâd spent more time climbing out of the window of her third story bedroom to sit on the roof and look at the stars than in meetings with her father or going to high end shops with her mother. She made telescopes out of leftover cardboard rolls as a child, laying back on the roof and gazing through the tubes covered with glitter and markers that smelled like bananas and strawberries. To her surprise, this interest was something that her parents encouraged. Not only did they consider this a sign of intelligence, but something that could be turned into a business venture in the future. This was a thought theyâd had in mind even when she was a young child - she could be an asset to the family name.
At the thought of college and her future, Stella considered both of her great loves to take the lead for her future. Her parents pushed for schooling astronomy and physics, encouraging her to go into something that would be worth their time and money - something that could become an eventual asset to their family name. The Westonâs could be known as affiliates to a future scientist and merge business with NASA. So, with her acceptance into Boston University, Stella moved across the country at eighteen into a dorm room with girls that didnât know who she was and the support of her parents in a career that she could actually love. Four years went by much faster than she would have liked - gaining and losing friends, learning what it took to work in the field, and spending part of her Junior year in Washington D.C. working in an intern position under a scientist at NASA that sheâd only just managed to get into. She did it all without the presence of her parents but their money and support to become the best in her chosen field.
With graduation came the decision on where she would go - back to D.C. to continue her work there? Back to Seattle under the reign of her parents? Or staying in Boston, a city that she had grown to truly love with the promise of a job at the Museum of Science and an acceptance letter to enter into the Graduate program at her alma mater. Stella could no longer live under the influence of people that could only see her as a business transaction. She didnât want to live in the house she grew up in, forced to attend parties and marry a boy of her fatherâs choosing. Stella wanted to be independent, graceful, and loved on all of her own terms. The thought of taking her own time, saving up her own money, and working outside of her parents control was exactly what Stella wanted for her life.
From her dormitory, she moved into Kings Terrace - all of the payments made with money sheâd saved from her internship and the first paycheck sheâd received working at the Museum of Science. Stella was six months into this living situation before she realized that the one big thing missing from her life, the one thing that she knew would make everything feel right, was music. She still played her keyboard; the one covered in Blink-182 stickers, rainbows, and nail polish that sheâd prized since she was twelve. The audition for a position playing at the Ritz was much more difficult than she had thought, but she was lucky enough to snag the position with practice on a piece that sheâd learned from videos online and music scores printed on colored paper. It was mostly an evening job at events and parties, working well with her early schedule at the museum.

Delphi Construction Moves into New Waltham Headquarters
WALTHAM, MAâConstruction management firm Delphi Construction, Inc. of Waltham and Cape Cod has to their their newly Corporate Headquarters on Bear Hill Road in Waltham, MA.
The 27,000 square foot building overlooking route 95 was purchased last year in order to bring Delphiâs northern operations along with those of sister company, Properties, Inc. together under one roof. An expansion and renovation of the companyâs Cape Cod offices in Mashpee was completed over the Summer.
âWe are thrilled to have all of our Waltham staff, including our construction operations and estimating/Preconstruction teams all together in one location,â said Delphi Executive Chairman and CEO Jake Simmons. â I am confident that the synergy created by this move will bring additional benefit to our clients. I think I speak for the entire team when I say that, thanks to the outstanding design work of Davis Square Architects, this new facility is both visually impressive and highly functional.â
With a post-modern Industrial design, the space features exposed metal ceilings and black steel beams complemented by polished concrete floors. Most of the 18 management offices, located around the windowed perimeter of the building, feature floor to ceiling-height glass walls. This design consideration allows a tremendous amount of natural light to infiltrate the building and offers virtually unobstructed window views, even to those workstations towards the interior of the space.
The most recent renovations comprise nearly 7,000 square feet and includes offices, cubicle banks, workrooms and 3 conference rooms: Inman, Weston and Overland. Each is named in honor of past street addresses where Delphi has held offices over its 25 plus year history in Business.
While the conference room names may give a nod to Delphiâs history, the technology within them is nothing short of Futuristic. Delphiâs Ken Brooks, who oversaw the dramatic IT infrastructure improvements made as part of the project, called attention to the state of the art technology in the Inman conference room as being particularly noteworthy.
âIt may be tempting to call these systems âA/Vâ but that wouldnât come close to doing the technology justice. The installed systems include a precisely tuned array of microphones and speakers in the ceiling along with an integrated, self-panning, self-zooming camera that dynamically responds and zeroes in on the current active speaker in any meeting. As a result we are able to create a high tech virtual conference room experience for remote meeting guests. This is highly efficient for our teams in the field who may be on any jobsite throughout the region. This technology allows them to virtually attend in a way that is almost as good as being here.â Brooks said.
Delphi plans future expansions and renovations within the building to correspond with growth.

REDCLIFFE PRIDE Â by Vic Heybyrne.
Although having visited a number of magnificent places of worship, including the Cathedral in Sophia (Bulgaria), the Notre Dame (Paris) and a modern R.C. Cathedral in San Francisco, I Â maintain the âboasting rightsâ (perhaps with a certain amount of bias) of being born, opposite the finest of them all â St. Mary Redcliffe Church.
My birthplace - 29 Phippen St. (situated with its âback-yardâ where the âChattertonâ School facade today stands) enjoyed one of the best views of the church from its front windows and also the pealing of bells celebrating Empire Day (May 24th) each year, the date of my birth during 1926.
Memories prior to the widening of Phippen St. and Pile St. to form Redcliffe Way (hence moving the School front) remain vivid; â Railings surrounding the church â A âcascadeâ of steps, unhindered by the building of a Crypt, which displayed the pageantry/spectacle of annual parades such as Lord Mayors Day/Rush Sunday and Armistice Day, in their full glory.
The latter was particularly memorable with âwire netting framesâ decorated with Poppies collected from the local people, adjacent the steps and the Remembrance service conducted amid these frames.
Other memories of the mid-thirties include the introduction of Rev. Swann, touring the surrounding streets in an open back car throwing sweets to the excited children* and at Xmas time distributing woollen blankets to the poor families.
*Perhaps in retrospect, mischievous children (myself included) grateful for any small gift, could be classed in modern terms as âstreet urchinâsâ (or as âarrr Maâ in her local dialect âouldâ say, âarrdânn kidsâ) who lived around the bend from the âelegantâ looking buildings that âfrontedâ the church, in ârat infested slum clearance housesâ with primitive âfacilitiesâ (no bathroom etc.) and the water obtained from a tap outside the backdoor.
Until Redcliffe Way and the Bridge were âopenedâ allowing easy access to Queen Square, the only âgreenâ in the district was St. Mary Redcliffe churchyard and whether it was because this ground was considered more âsacredâ, a common occurrence was local âkidsâ walking the short distance to play in Temple churchyard.
Special memories of this âplayâ area include the use of a wooden plank, together with a tin tray to form a simple âSliderâ from the top of a wall at the far end of the ground. (N.B. This wall, the top of which was heavily impregnated with broken glass to deter intruders, was the perimeter of the then âPickford Removalsâ yard).
Also remembered, is erecting a tent on the grass, made from bacon sacks (obtained from âSellicksâ a firm in the adjacent road) sewn together with string, plus poles/canes obtained from âGreensladesâ (Brush manufacturers at the top of Thomas Street).
However, the main outdoor recreation for lads, apart from school activities, was being adventurous in the vicinity of the docks. - Often on a Sunday, âmoochingâ from religious classes, climbing over/under the gates located in âPump Laneâ onto the sidings and following the railway track, which was idle during the âSabbathâ, through the tunnel under the church to Guinea Street/Bathurst Basin and exploring the area.
To us âimpoverished ladsâ, remnants of Sultana/currant fruit, Lotus Beans and over ripe Bananas etc. were ârich pickingsâ from the âemptiedâ railway trucks and barges on both sides of the harbour.
During the summer holidays it was usual to see âgangsâ of boys happily swimming in Bathurst Basin, or clambering over the âOld Jailâ in Cumberland Rd., which was a substantial building ruin, now severely deteriorated.
Also to see the enjoyment of young groups going further âafieldâ, following the railway track to Cumberland Basin and subsequently climbing down the side of the bridge onto the river âtow-pathâ leading to Leigh Woods and the popular ânatural sliderâ â the rock surface slopes at the side of the railway tunnel, then constantly âpolishedâ by the local boys âwearing outâ their knee length trousers, and nowadays regularly used as a gallery for graffiti artists.
All of these activities were uninhibited by the concern of wandering without the company of adults. Another âadventure areaâ closer to home, was an empty âmillâ warehouse in âRedcliffe Backsâ. This large building, now the site of modern dwellings, was great fun with âmanufactured slidersâ, (chutes from floor to floor to convey sacks of produce) but importantly, avoiding the lower ones, that exited through the side walls to load wagons in the street or barges on the river.
My affiliation with Redcliffe is well established, noting that my fatherâs family home was in Phippen St. (his brotherâs name is included on the church 1914-18 war memorial). Also my mother, (born during the year 1900) who together with four brothers and a sister were âraisedâ in a cottage opposite the âKilnâ (now featured as a restaurant in the nearby hotel), situated one side of the âCow (slaughter) Yardâ off Prewett St. and their father (my grandfather) who subsequently lived in Thomas Street near the junction of Portwall Lane, until his death during 1950. â In addition, my two brothers and I attended nursery at St. Barnards Place, the Infant school in Ship Lane and the Junior/Senior school in Redcliffe Parade (my sister at Temple Colston) and I completed my âschoolingâ at the age of 14 years, during May 1940.
Thereby creating âa firm bondâ, which is still maintained by my continued association with âOld Redcliffianâs R.F.C. since 1948. Admittedly however, my well-founded loyalty was âsorely temptedâ, when as a young boy, the ârewardâ for attending âFreshford Lane Chapelâ (a large upstairs room which was situated near where the roundabout is now located), or âCounterslip Chapelâ situated behind âMardonsâ in Victoria St., was the âadmissionâ to Xmas parties (generally a lantern show, with a bag of sweets and an orange) and/or a âsubsidyâ to go on the annual 6 penny Weston outings. Note: The most rewarding parties, which included presents for âpoor kidsâ, were held annually for those attending with slight injuries (occasionally self-inflicted), the casualty dept. of the General Hospital.
Recalling my period at Redcliffe School, the principles were well defined; with early morning assembly overseen by roof beams engraved with the 4 âPâs. - Punctuality, Prayer, Practice and Perseverance, also the teaching of the 3 âRâs â Reading, âWâriting, âAârithmetic, increased to 4 by an important discipline, Respect! Prior to major alterations, when the Mervyn King Hall and a large playground were built on the old Vicarage gardens, (approx. 1936-7) facilities/activities in the school were strictly limited. âTwo extremely small playgrounds. â Wood and metal craft lessons held at Boot Lane, Bedminster. - Â Swimming lessons (dragged along on the end of a rope) at the Mayors Paddock Baths, Clarence Rd. - P.T. classes held in the Redcliffe Parish Rooms, Guinea St. and the âHouseâ Rugby matches played on a âblack cinderâ type surface in the Quakers Burial ground, (which was subsequently reduced in length when Redcliffe Way was built).
Despite these severe restrictions, the âsporting and academicâ achievements were outstanding and Iâm sure that these factors, together with the school principles, the strict discipline and the church support were the âsolid foundationsâ needed for the important âcharacter buildingâ of maturing boys.
Summing up: Iâm extremely proud to be, âOnce a Redcliffe Boy, always a Redcliffe Boyâ!
I even have a Certificate, signed by the Archbishop of Canterbury, granting permission for my second marriage at St. Mary Redcliffe Church during 1984, as recommended by Rev. Frayne.

My Fucked Up Past...
Sarah was raised half at my house and half at her fathersâ parentsâ house. Â Because of this, I donât think she ever felt like she was a resident of my house, but rather a guest. Â This is evidenced by Sarah always asking if she could have a drink when she was growing up, instead of just opening the fridge and getting it. Â At 3 years old, Lily has already started opening the fridge â without me telling her to. Â This is saying to me that Lily feels she owns the fridge and has a right to open it, while Sarah didnât feel the same way. Â
I got together with Sarahâs father after a breakup with my high school boyfriend.  We had been together for 4 years, taken each otherâs virginity, and planned to get married at some point â at least, until he decided not to.  I had just quit college after a year and a half, my childhood pet died, I was the heaviest I had ever been in my life and I was diagnosed with clinical depression when he chose to bow out.  He tried to ghost me.  I had no idea what was happening.  He had been living with me at my motherâs house for the past year when all of a sudden he didnât come home.  I didnât know if something had happened to him, and with everything else going on in my life, I failed to recognize the signs that he was unhappy in the relationship.  He was my best friend.  The person I would turn to when things were too much for me â and he wasnât there anymore. It was devastating.  Â
He moved into an apartment down the road with a new buddy of his.  We kept in touch for the next year, while I frantically dieted and exercised and tried to entice him to come back.  I lost 40lbs. We occasionally slept together, which I took as a good sign that he would eventually realize that he missed me and we should get back together.  But we didnât.  He kept me as a fuck-buddy, and when Iâd had enough, I decided to find someone else. Thatâs when I found Sarahâs fatherâŠonlineâŠin a chatroom.  That probably should have been my first red flag, but seeing as how my self-esteem was so low, and how he complimented me up and down about my appearance â something I hadnât felt good about in a long time â I ignored the bells and sirens going off in my head and started seeing him.  He was okay looking.  Not hideous, but not what I would call attractive.  I had convinced myself that I wasnât meant to have a relationship with someone I was insanely attracted to, and that a quiet, domestic life taking care of a small family was an honorable, worthwhile life that I could lead.  The whole thought now feels very Sarah Plain and Tall.
We rushed in.  I got pregnant and had Sarah.  Over the pregnancy, he showed his true colors.  He was looking for a woman to wait on him hand and foot, then spread her legs whenever the fancy struck him, which was often.  He was older than me, and came from a wealthy home.  And he tried to make me feel inferior because of it. At that point, I didnât have a college degree.  He had two of them.  I came from the poor section of Cambridge, MA and a broken, lower middle-class home. He came from Norway, with both parents still married to each other, living in a big house they owned in Weston, MA and his father owning his own successful software company.  It was difficult not to feel like the âwhite trashâ that he often referred to me as. Â
After I had had enough of his psychological abuse â and there were many, many instances of this abuse â I took Sarah, around 2.5 years old at the time â and moved into my motherâs house.  What made the situation worse is that his mother had been Sarahâs daytime care provider while we were at work.  We continued with that arrangement, but it was extremely uncomfortable when I had to drop off and pick up Sarah, sometimes having to deal with her abusive remarks.  Why did I take all this bullshit?  I was young and poor and while I couldnât afford childcare on my own, I made too much money for public assistance. Â
