When NOT to Use SEO
A large part of our business is conducting professional Search Engine Optimization services for small and medium-sized businesses. So you might be surprised to learn that we talk ourselves out of more SEO projects than not. Or, more accurately, we talk our clients out of doing SEO.
Many people see, hear and read about various SEO success stories from friends, colleagues and business associates and think, "Hey, sounds great. How can I use that for MY business?"
The problem with SEO, probably more than any other Internet marketing tactic, is that it's often the wrong tool for the job. No matter how bad you WANT it to be the answer to your problems and help you increase sales it's just not not going to cut it.
Tumblr media
sSo to help you evaluate whether SEO can be part of your well-rounded Internet marketing strategy, here's 5 reasons why SEO will NOT help you"
1. You Have a Made Up Product: The whole foundation of SEO is to position your webpages to be the answer to the question regarding relevant searches. If the product or service you offer is something so unique or made up, you can't leverage SEO for the simple reason that nobody knows to search for it. Case in point was a company that came to us to implement an SEO program for "Dog Wine." The problem is two-fold: Wine is actually bad for your dog so nobody would be looking for those keywords together unless maybe it was for "Dog wine poisoning." Secondly, the product wasn't actually wine at all but a type of gravy commonly sold to spruce up kibble. So while the product was real and perfectly OK to feed your dog, the association between the made up product category (dog wine) and the actual product (a kibble additive commonly referred to as "dog gravy") was beyond the scope of SEO. A better marketing solution that we suggested was a trade PR campaign combined with blogger reviews since the product needed explaining in order to "get it."
2. Low Search Volume: The biggest issue we find is that the keyword phrases associated with the company's products and services are in low demand. Nobody wants to hear that what they're selling is not in demand or the greatest thing since sliced bread. SEO exposes weaknesses in branding and product positioning. Sometimes SEO is considered a panacea for a weak product offering or non-existing branding campaign. SEO can't perform magic, and certainly can not create demand where little or none exists. SEO works best when you have a product or service with well-articulated BENEFITS to the person doing the search, since most searches start with "How do I... " or "How to... " Be the answer to that question assuming it's even being asked. Our keyword research will expose those weaknesses right away.
3. No Supporting Efforts: Search Engine Optimization has become increasingly complex in that one-time efforts, while still important, aren't enough to sustain any short term success. And with the rising importance of social media's impact on SEO, businesses will need to invest in ongoing social media efforts to boost their baseline SEO results since all the major search engines have gone on record that social media signals going in and out of a website are a validation of that site's authorityon a particular subject (and set of keywords). So to invest in SEO is really a baseline step that needs to be reinforced with social media marketing and content marketing and blogging on an ongoing basis.
4. Website Design is Not Set Up For SEO: While a website's layout can be changed, this can often lead to additional costs in order to change the layout of the website to make it SEO ready. For instance, the number one problem is when all products and services are listed on a single page. In order to perform proper SEO, each product or service must have it's own page since proper onsite SEO requires unique META tags, Title tags, keywords, etc. Another hurdle is when clients have Flash-heavy websites or resist placing actual text and words on the site preferring mostly pictures. SEO is about content, mainly text.
5. Need Results Immediately: And as you probably suspect, SEO can take time to take effect. In fact, the very nature of GOOD SEO practices is to try and mimic organic linking and social media activity in as natural means as possible. That means slowly, and gradually. And even then, it can take the search engines weeks and even months to index your site and move it up in the rankings - if at all! So if you have a special event or you're planning a product roll out or other timely event, SEO isn't going to be your ticket to the top.

Towing Company Concord CA
Finding A Moving Truck
You may have seen a moving truck in your neighborhood or at the store but you don't know what the moving truck is for or why you need it. Towing Company Concord CA do not just tow your car. Even if it was not your car, you probably still have an image in your head of a moving truck being hauled away.
Tumblr media
So, what exactly does a moving truck offer that makes them different than any other towing service? Your best guess is something along the lines of moving trucks that tow trailers and other equipment.
Moving Trucks are also commonly known as Pick Up Trucks, Flatbed Trucks, Trailers or Flatbeds. They can be operated by anyone who has a valid license and drivers with at least a Class A driver's license. The minimum operating age is 18 years old.
These trucks are extremely heavy. The average moving truck is at least 50 feet long, five feet wide and up to eighteen feet tall, weighing in at nearly one ton. They are not just used for moving cars though, they are also used for hauling construction equipment, other moving trucks, refrigerators, and even some farm equipment.
The moving truck is equipped to handle almost all kinds of loads. This includes forklifts, dump trucks, and construction equipment. Even some of the most heavy-duty moving trucks are equipped to move anything up to forty-five tons.
A moving truck is capable of carrying a cargo over many miles without ever stopping. This means that they are the perfect way to go when it comes to moving goods from one location to another. However, the moving trucks can only be driven as far as fifty-one miles.
Tacking is also necessary if you want your cargo to be safely removed. Tacking helps to keep your cargo out of harm's way when you haul it from one place to another. There are several ways to tack but they include placing it on top of the vehicle, under the tarp or inside the bed, or securing it with hooks and rollers.
Whether or not you are using a truck trailer, moving truck or trailer, a moving trucking company can be very beneficial to you. The services they provide can save you a lot of time and money as well as you no longer have to deal with unloading the vehicle and loading it back onto the road. With a little bit of work you can avoid a lot of hassle when it comes to hauling your belongings.
One reason why moving companies can be beneficial to you is that they often come with a lot of equipment. They typically have some kind of lift or tarp which is designed for securing your goods so that they do not get damaged. They will also probably have a forklift and a backhoe to assist them in their job. Many have a trailer on the side that they can take to help you move boxes or goods.
You should make sure to get several estimates before you hire any towing company. The more quotes you get the better the rates will be. Make sure to ask about their rates in addition to the price of the trucks.
Another consideration when hiring a moving truck trailer is whether they are insured. Most are, but you should check and see if they carry liability insurance as well. If they don't have liability insurance, you could end up paying some extra money.
Make sure to ask for references if you decide to hire any towing company. Ask them what kind of experience they have in the industry. You can find out if they have good customer service as well. Some companies will provide you with a phone number where you can call to find out more about their service.
If you don't have a local phone book you can also try the internet. Many moving companies have online websites that you can search through for a list of companies that you may want to consider. Contact these companies by email and see what kind of service they can offer.

Today’s #Bluesday post features a ca. 1890s cyanotype photograph from the Hagley Library’s Louis E. and Max Levy photograph album. The album was created by Louis Edward Levy (1846-1919) and Max Levy (1857-1926), two brothers whose parents immigrated to the United States from Bohemia in 1854.
After studying and working in the fields of architecture, mathematics, astronomy, and microscope photography, the brothers worked together to found a photoengraving business in Baltimore in 1875. In 1877, they moved to Philadelphia and reorganized the firm as the Levytype Company. Here, they formally introduced their invention of a new photochemical engraving process, jointly patented on January 4, 1875, which they called "Levy-type".
Other inventions followed, including the engraved glass grating known as the Levy line screen. Invented in 1887, these were the first commercial halftone screens, which became universally used for producing half-tone photoengravings, and are still an industry standard to this day. This innovation was followed by the acid blast, or etching machine, in 1897 and the etch-powdering machine in 1901. In 1900, the firm was renamed the Graphic Arts Company, and the brothers added a printing and publishing department to their business.
Outside of their work in the photography industry, the brothers were prominent members of the Philadelphia Jewish community. Most notably, Louis was the founding president of the Association for the Protection of Jewish Immigrants, known today as HIAS Pennsylvania, and wrote extensively on immigration related issues.
The Louis E. and Max Levy photograph album (Accession 1976.252) contains personal cyanotype photographs taken by the brothers of their homes, travels, friends, and family. Included are scenes from Philadelphia, Boston, Roxbury, Dedham, Concord, Northboro, and Nantucket, Massachusetts; snapshots of children and other people; and various interiors. Another Reminder that it’s not good to be poor in the United States
I made a mistake.  When I moved last year I apparently did not properly update my registration of my car to reflect my new address (I only changed the address for the drivers license apparently).  Consequently, when my registration needed renewing, it went to the wrong address and did not get forwarded to me.  Now perhaps a more on-the-ball person would have noticed after a while that the DMV had not asked me to renew my registration, but mid 2018 came and wnet and I remained blissfully ignorant.
Yesterday I went to Sacramento to help push for a bill that would make it illegal to deny college athletes’ the right to commercialize their name, image, or likeness.  I enjoy going by train so I can work during the hour each way.  I parked at my nearest Amtrak station in Martinez, CA, but when I got home my car was gone.  When I called the police and they told me it was not stolen, just towed, I was sort of relieved.  I was a little less relieved when they told me I’d have to pay $125 to get it back (only after I’d fixed the registration issue), but it seemed like it basically going to be a 2x4 to the head to remind me int he future to stay on top of stuff like that.
Well, I took the whole morning off from work and dealt with it.  My wife had to work so I took Lyft to three different places.  First an hour at the DMV in Walnut Creek and $448 later, I had my car re-registered.  $177 of that were late fees and penalties.    Then 30 minutes with the Martinez Police where I paid my $125 only to find I also needed to pay the towing company that was 5 miles away or so in Concord.  The toy place, which had had my car for about 12 hours, charged me $310.  Most galling of this all was a $65 gate fee, which apparently was for the guy sitting around to go open the gate so i could drive out after I’d paid my fees.  Thankfully b/c I dealt with it right away, I only paid one day of storage -- the fees would have grown if I couldn’t have dealt with it asap.
With three Lyft rides, the total cost (above the basic registration fee which I owed anyway), yesterday’s decision to park in Martinez w/an expired registration cost me $654.  Oh yeah, it also was raining so even the old “it could have been worse” joke kicked in.  Obviously, given my high-status job and high bill rate, $642 and a lost half-day of work is not going to make or break me and it’s mostly just my own feelings of embarrassment and stupidity I am dealing with now.
But for a large portion of the United States, $642+a half-day of work is not an inconvenience.  It is a disaster.  It could be the start of a downward financial death spiral.  I recognize I brought all this on myself for being absent-minded and that I can handle it.  I just think we need to change the system so that people for whom $642 is not an embarrassment but a disaster, making the sort of mistake that a harried person who is working multiple jobs doesn’t walk out of a train station, think his/her car was stolen, only to find out, no, it’s maybe worse -- your car is held by the city and you have to come up with lots of cash ASAP or else it’s just going to get worse and worse.  Oh yeah, also we have yoru car until you pay.
Plus, it was in no way necessary.  The city of Martinez towed my car, not because it was a danger, but because, in essence, I (accidentally) owed the State some money and they wanted to get a bounty for enforcing that back-debt.  They could have issued me a fix-it ticket, on the theory that perhaps I’d simply overlooked the payment, etc.  And that would have saved me a good deal of time an money.  But they towed me, I think, because it’s how Martinez raises revenue for public services.  It’s like a speed trap for parked cars.  And so to get $125, Martinez essentially threw $310 to a tow company too.  So it’s a public harm for private gain and I just think we need to ask why we do that to people who are already crapped on by the system.
Of course I know the answer.  Poor people don’t have a voice.  "Why didn’t you just pay on time” etc.  The system sucks for us all but it really sucks when you can’t afford to go to Sacramento to lobby for change, when you can’t find someone willing to stand up for you etc.
Trust me, I am never going to screw this up again, no benefit to a second kick of a mule and all that.  And I’m sort of busy with all my other do-gooder-ism.  But if someone wants a new cause, let’s please reduce the use of municipal fines to raise revenue of the backs of the poor, and instead let’s just use taxes, which can be tailored to focus the costs on those who can afford it, and don’t end up wasting time and funneling money to private firms.

On Oct. 1, Russia’s Defense Ministry admitted that the Russian army had left Lyman, a city in the Donetsk region of Ukraine that had been captured by the occupying forces early last summer. According to the ministry, the Russian troops had now moved “to more advantageous positions.” That statement was followed by Ramzan Kadyrov’s derisive remark: “Yesterday, it was the parade in Izium, today it’s the Ukrainian flag in Lyman – and what about tomorrow? It would all be well and good if it weren’t so bad,” quipped the Head of the Chechen Republic. Shortly afterwards, Evgeny Prigozhin, the man behind the Wagner Group, replied to Kadyrov: “Beautiful, Ramzan, keep it up.” This wasn’t the first instance of Ramzan Kadyrov criticizing Russia’s Defense Ministry – and being seconded by Prigozhin. On Sept. 24, for example, the Chechen leader urged that 50 percent of the Russian law-enforcement troops be sent to the front. Immediately, Prigozhin spoke up – that Kadyrov was right. Meduza’s sources close to the Kremlin think this is something more than just a coincidence. Here are the connections they shared with us, and what this may mean for the future of Russia’s military.
The day before Russia’s retreat from Lyman, Vladimir Putin signed several “treaties” for the annexation of Ukrainian territories: the self-proclaimed “DNR” and “LNR,” as well as the occupied Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions. This was followed by a muddled speech, whose main thrust was that Russia would never “betray” “its people” in the newly-annexed regions.
Following the retreat from Lyman the next day, Kadyrov blamed the failure on the Colonel Gen. Alexander Lapin. According to Kadyrov, Lapin was in command of the Russian defense forces in that area, but failed to supply his troops with “the necessary communications, feedback and weapons deliveries.”
The head of Chechnya also pointed out that only last July, Lapin had been awarded a Hero of Russia title and a “golden star” for taking Lysychansk – when in reality, according to Kadyrov, Lapin “was nowhere near” the action. Kadyrov openly called Lapin a “mediocrity” who takes advantage of being liked by the General Command. Lamenting “army nepotism,” Kadyrov urged decisive measures, including a tactical nuclear strike on Ukraine.
Kadyrov’s remarks were quickly picked up by Evgeny Prigozhin, the founder of the Wagner Private Military Company, whose PMC is actively involved in Russia’s current invasion of Ukraine. Even before the mobilization, Prigozhin was aggressively recruiting servicemen among the incarcerated – despite the fact that this is unlawful in Russia.
“Kadyrov’s expressive statement is not at all my style,” Prigozhin wrote on the website of his catering company, Concord. “But I can say this: ‘Beautiful, Ramzan, keep it up.’ These punks should be shipped to the front barefoot with machine guns.”
This wasn’t the first instance when Ramzan Kadyrov would criticize Russia’s Defense Ministry – and Prigozhin would promptly express his agreement. On Sept. 24, for example, the Chechen leader urged that 50 percent of the Russian law-enforcement troops be sent to the front. Immediately, Prigozhin said that Kadyrov was right.
Two of Meduza’s sources close to the Kremlin think that this is no coincidence. They believe that Kadyrov and Prigozhin both belong to the radical wing of the so-called “war party” – those members of the Russian government who advocate for the invasion and, strategically, for escalation. According to one of our sources,
Prigozhin has some old grudges against Shoigu. He thinks that the army is using outdated methods, and that his own Wagner PMC is a super-effective cutting-edge entity. Shoigu and the generals, meanwhile, think that the PMC is just muddling things up.
Another source noted that, even before the invasion, Prigozhin and Shoigu got into an “unprintable” argument at one of the Defense Ministry’s meetings. In recent years, Prigozhin also lost a large share of his government contracts with the ministry.
As for Ramzan Kadyrov, he has repeatedly pointed out that the Chechen units of the Russian army fight much better than the rest of it, and stand ready “to take Kiev tomorrow, if Putin so orders.”
Meduza’s sources also note that the Kremlin made no attempt to rebuke either Kadyrov or Prigozhin for their criticisms of the Defense Ministry. “The President considers the Chechen battalions’ and Prigozhin’s work quite effective,” emphasized a source close to the President’s Office.
Two sources, one of them close to the Kremlin, and the other to the federal government, explain that, in light of recent military failures, Putin is “interested in alternative warfare methods” — and in people who can offer them. Prigozhin and Kadyrov are of interest to Putin for that reason. As one of our sources put it, the president “likes these people from the front, ‘real people’. Prigozhin and Kadyrov fit that description — or try to fit.”
Meduza’s sources also say that Kadyrov’s and Prigozhin’s criticisms of the army are silently supported by “a group of ambitious young FSO-men” — that is, Putin’s former security officers, the Governor of Tula Alexey Dyumin and the former head of the Yaroslavl region, Dmitry Mironov, who is now an assistant to the President. According to sources close to the President’s Office, Mironov and Dyumin often talk and meet in person. Sources in the Yaroslavl and Tula regions confirm this information.
A source in Tula’s regional administration points out that, even before the war, Evgeny Prigozhin collaborated with the local government – for example, by bringing political consultants to manage elections. The Insider (a media project deemed a “foreign agent” and “undesirable” in Russia) has also written about Dyumin’s connection to Prigozhin.
According to two sources close to the President’s Office, Ramzan Kadyrov got to know both Dyumin and Prigozhin when they were still Putin’s bodyguards. Apparently, Kadyrov was friendly with both of them – and even called Dyumin his “elder brother.”
Sources also suggest that both Dyumin and Mironov may be interested in undermining the Defense Ministry. The army’s faltering at the front, it is proposed, could help them advance in their own careers. In the past, both of them worked in the Federal Security Service (FSO), but they also held significant posts in the law enforcement. Mironov was once the deputy head of the Interior Ministry (MVD). Dyumin was once second to Shoigu in the Ministry of Defense. According to two sources close to the Kremlin, Dyumin and Shoigu did not get along: Shoigu, it appears, suspected that Dyumin might scheme to take his place. It was Shoigu, according to one of our sources, who had Dyumin finally dispatched to Tula.
It used to be thought that Alexey Dyumin and Dmitry Mironov were made to fill some large-ish “shoes” as regional governors, in order to return to Moscow later as ministers. In 2017, Dyumin was even considered a possible successor to Putin. But neither of them have yet been offered a minister’s position – or even a significant promotion.
Two of our sources close to the Kremlin think that Dyumin might hope to return to the Defense Ministry as Shoigu’s replacement. Kadyrov and Prigozhin, sources believe, would support this rearrangement, since Dyumin would give Prigozhin new government contracts, and Kadyrov might expect that a new defense minister would start acting more forcefully in Ukraine, perhaps by attacking the critical infrastructure there.
The probability of these staffing changes is not very high, even though they’re being discussed in the Kremlin, our sources say. They also think that Putin remains “conservative in making staffing decisions,” even in light of his military failures. It is doubted that he would make radical changes at a time when the Defense Ministry is publicly under attack.
As of the moment of this publication, Alexey Dyumin’s, Dmitry Mironov’s and Ramzan Kadyrov’s staff had not responded to Meduza’s queries. The presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov also made no reply; but Evgeny Prigozhin stated that he really does think that the people responsible for the retreat from Lyman are “punks” – without specifying who those people might, in fact, be. Prigozhin also said that, when he encouraged Kadyrov by saying “beautiful, Ramzan,” he only meant to wish him “good health and further flourishing.”

Oakland Faculty University Moving And Storage Company
Oakland Faculty University Shifting And Storage Firm
I've moved many times over the previous 10 years and these are one of the best movers I've ever had. JIM BOB: Anybody wish to see me fly off the counter over there simply just like the plane I saw? When i came out and opened the again of my new SUV to load the groceries, I noticed my backpack was not there. I used to be very impressed and in the event you ever need a reference, please attain out to us. Do Oakland movers want stress relief? Movers and Movers is a high-rated company in Oakland for its nice service and workers. The planning wanted for an workplace transfer, whether for a small or massive company usually entails complicated group and complications for the administrators co-ordinating the relocation service. This was my first experience with a moving company and I would have to say, I was more than happy! If you end up contemplating shopping for and promoting old books for a revenue you might be shifting into ebook buying and selling which is extra of a enterprise than a pastime.
I like books and I actually love the old and rare. Books can become rare in the event that they turn into standard with collectors and the primary printing was small. However we don't have to just accept human authorities as an act of God, we can change course. If requested, they'll present packing containers, additional tape and can of course secure your gadgets with proper protection like shrink wrap and/or blankets. Save on additional services and improve your degree of safety when you bundle choices together. Hire among the finest companies in town in your next transfer. I hired Rob and his crew of two to move from a four-bedroom home in Piedmont to a four-bedroom house in Rockridge. The home we moved out of had an insane amount of stairs and these three dealt with them with velocity, efficiency, and actually positive attitudes. Later the same yr he used the income from the San Francisco pictures to achieve a long time goal and bought the Studio of the Three Arrows in Yosemite.

It was my first time hiring professional movers and I was very proud of the service. The transfer took much much less time than they estimated, they usually charged me a lot less than the estimate. Improve your lightning at the same time you’re doing the electrical works. For a similar purpose bank robbers rob banks. SDC Worldwide Shipping makes the method look easy although thanks to our years of expertise. Ideally, an island ought to be unencumbered by equipment, but if you want it to home a dishwasher-sink combo or a cook prime, strive to keep up the light look of a leggy harvest desk. Oakland is filled with some nice eating places you simply have to attempt. I try texting. No answer. Location - Positioned 1 mile off of I-75, situated on the border of Orion, Auburn Hills and Rochester; Premier is by far the best to reach self storage complicated anywhere in the realm.
I then returned the Rental Van to the 8000 San Leandro Avenue Location where the Yard attendant Post Tripped the Van and Checked it for Injury . Listening to baseball trade information sooner or later, I requested our then-13-yr-previous son, Matt, how a baseball participant immediately stops being a member of one workforce, then simply as instantly becomes a member of a competing crew. California has two workplaces in Oakland, one in Concord and one in Fairfield. Generally a e book publisher could print a condensed model or one with a special cover and name it a limited edition. The Lion's Paw Purchase Now What's the Difference Between a primary Version and Limited Edition? The first day in your new home needs to be joyous. Commander moved us from a 2-bd house to our new residence in Dimond. Positioned at our house office, it's staffed each day, clear, geared up with the fashionable and up to date safety methods, freed from pests and rodents, and best of all you set your individual lock on it.
I used to be anxious about how they were going to transport and put together the piano legs since I had simply put in model new floors. They only delivered a piano to my door about five minutes in the past. In San Jose and San Francisco Bay Area we’re among the most reputable shifting companies around. With our locations in San Jose and San Francisco we're in a position to supply our moving providers to more than 7 million local residents. More and more I've come to comprehend the implications of the readiness of young artists like Herb and the Colwells to have interaction in a function that gave relevance and which means to their skills. However I did like it. Only the rich could afford a house like he had in Minnesota, out in Frisco, as he often called town by the bay. We hired Jay's Small Strikes for a transfer from our 1 bedroom residence to a house in Richmond final weekend. The transfer in crew was once more, friendly and environment friendly. The 5 Most Important Retail Events Of 2020 Actually Had Almost Nothing To Do With Covid-19
New Post has been published on https://perfectirishgifts.com/the-5-most-important-retail-events-of-2020-actually-had-almost-nothing-to-do-with-covid-19/
The 5 Most Important Retail Events Of 2020 Actually Had Almost Nothing To Do With Covid-19
IRVINE, CA – OCTOBER 22: Shoppers walk through the produce section at a newly opened Amazon Fresh … [] store on Jamboree Road in Irvine, CA on Thursday, October 22, 2020. Several more stores are planned, including in Fullerton, Whittier, Long Beach and Los Angeles. (Photo by Paul Bersebach/MediaNews Group/Orange County Register via Getty Images)
Oh, what a year — the coronavirus pandemic dominated the headlines in 2020, and rightfully so. However, the year was also punctuated by some important retail milestones that had nothing to do with the pandemic itself, milestones that, when one stops to look at them, say a heck of a lot more about where retail is headed than some upteenth, ad nauseam story about the virus accelerating e-commerce or curbside pickup at darn near every retailer in the country.
No, and as put forth last year, 2019 was the real tipping point, not 2020. 2020 was just a supercharged, microbial extension of what was a preexisting groundswell. A foundational transformation was already underway, and, while many companies reaped the rewards of shifting their operations towards pandemic-induced changes in shopping behavior, many of these actions would have happened organically over time regardless.
The real headlines, the headlines that mattered the most in 2020, were far more subtle and substantive. Look closely, and they either confirmed suspicions already out there or hinted at the next brushstrokes on a still-to-be-painted canvas far more than some plexiglass divider on a checklane every will.
Here then, and in order of importance, were the biggest events in retail over the past year, all of which had almost nothing to do with COVID-19:
The department store was shown to have no clothes
There is no sense beating a dead horse on this one, but, if 2020 proved anything, it is that the “why,” as in, “Why come to a physical store to shop?” will always matter.
Department stores haven’t had a why for some time now. Is it convenience? Is it inspiration? Is it immediate gratification? Touch and feel? Experience?
No. No. No. No. And, no.
It’s none of them.
Look at the comparative set, and department stores lose across all five dimensions. Consumers are just as easily inspired, if not more so, by Instagram. Delivery can happen whenever people want at the press of a button, rendering immediate gratification and convenience utter moot points, and, while touch and feel and experience are both somewhat still inherent to a physical store shopping experience, the ever-advancing business models surrounding returns and the opportunity costs of just doing something else with one’s time continue to render these aspects less and less important, too.
As a result, retailers like J.C. Penney and Macy’s M are crumbling right before the industry’s eyes, while, on the flip side, one-stop shops, like Walmart WMT and Target TGT , continue to prove their staying power. Even Sephora’s announcement recently that it plans to open 850 stores inside of existing Kohl’s stores further signals the demise of the department store or, better said, the once great retail horse and buggy.
J.C. Penney’s acquirers like Simon Property Group and Brookfield Property Partners, along with other players like the Authentic Brands Group, should not be confused with knights in shining armor, either.
Interested parties can try as they might, but there is still no combination of Lucky Brand jeans, Brook Brothers’ suits, etc. inside the four walls of any newly imagined department store that will ever answer the collective “why” any better than what was there before.
Dollar General DG plans to expands its reach
Long the bastion of Walmart and Target, discount one-stop shopping is a huge business. For years, Dollar General and its roughly 16,000 stores have undercut a certain portion of this business and now the company has plans to extend its reach.
In October the announcement came that Dollar General plans to open a new concept, dubbed “popshelf,” in which it will sell fashionable and on-trend products in seasonal decor and entertaining, along with health and beauty items.
Popshelf’s stores also won’t be small. They will be 9,000 square feet, with the first two opening near Nashville and another 30 locations planned by the end of 2021. 95% of the items sold within the concept will also reportedly be under $5 and designed to target suburban households earning $50,000 to $125,000.
Say what, Walmart and Target?
Lest one think Dollar General isn’t as serious as a heart attack about going after the high margin parts of Walmart’s and Target’s businesses, Dollar General on the heels of it popshelf news also confirmed reports of its plans to build a new DGX concept store in 2021 literally six blocks away from Target’s flagship store in Minneapolis. There, too, Dollar General will plan to sell much of what the big guys do, along with fresh fruits and vegetables.
For 2019, NRF reported that Dollar General’s U.S. revenue was just shy of $28 billion, while Walmart’s and Target’s were a combined almost $500 billion. That is quite the delta, and 2020 appears to be the year Dollar General is upping the ante to go right after it.
Instacart and DoorDash started thinking and acting like retailers
As Canadian retail pundit Carl Boutet likes to say, “You may as well replace the “c” with an “m” and just call it Instamart.”
Because that is exactly where things appear to be headed.
While COVID-19 has undoubtedly been a boon to both Instacart and DoorDash, both companies appear to be amassing the troops at the borders of full-fledged retailing.
Since the beginning of the year, Instacart has rounded out its assortments well beyond grocery. Best Buy BBY , Walmart, Staples, Bed Bath & Beyond BBBY , Sephora, and Costco (for prescription drugs) have all inked new deals with Instacart this year.
If you are keeping score at home, that is pretty much everything in retail.
Similarly, and taking things one step further by literally co-opting the “M,” DoorDash in August also announced that it had opened DashMart, a self-described “new type of convenience store” that is “owned, operated, and curated” by DoorDash across various cities, and whereby consumers in markets, like Chicago, Minneapolis, etc., can go to an online DashMart storefront and purchase all their most-desired local convenience and restaurant items and then have those items delivered in 30 minutes or less by way of mirco-fulfillment warehouses, run again, by DoorDash.
If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it is probably a retailer.
But, that is only one part of the story here.
Many have long hypothesized a move by one or both of these players into retail. The real moral of the story, however, is what the advancements of Instacart and DoorDash mean for the psychological evolution of one-stop shopping in the years ahead.
If convenience is the barometer by which so many decisions are made and same-day delivery is also such an important part of that mental calculus, then how consumers think about their options and where they go physically and digitally will also start to change.
Sure, places like Walmart and Target will still exist as the omnichannel manifestations of same-day shopping, but the digital entities like the Instacarts, DoorDashs, and, yes, Amazons AMZN of the world will each or altogether begin to carve out more mindshare as the go-to digital marketplaces for tertiary needs in even more pronounced ways than they do today.
Over time this evolution will mean that the “me too” (my quotes) retailers, i.e. the speciality players, will continue to lose out, as little by little, in an almost death by a thousand cuts fashion, consumers will have less and less reasons to actually visit their physical stores, a point that becomes especially true when one puts it all into context with the next 2020 bellwether event below.
Facebook became a retailer
If the battle of Concord had its “shot heard round the world” in 1775, then Facebook gave retail its own version in 2020.
On November 12, 2020 a seminal moment in retail history occurred when Instagram made its Reels and Shop tabs easily accessible on its homepage.
The move was momentous because it means that discovery and shopping can now all happen in the same place online. Physical retail stores are no longer pre-requisites for product discovery. In fact, they are now at best poor second choice options because they are all limited by the amount of products retailers can carry inside of their four walls.
Instagram (and Facebook), in contrast, are not, which means the moments of consumer discovery within the U.S. will now forever be owned by the Zuck, and retailers will be left to scrape and claw over whatever residual social media feed real estate they can secure in much the same way they used to clamor for the prime locations inside of a mall. Only this time, the elements of shipping and convenience will also be added into the equation (see Instacart and DoorDash above), confounding the idea of same-day discovery and delivery even more.
It is crazy how it all ladders together.
Whether one likes Instagram’s changes or not, think of it this way — approximately 4 million people are born in the U.S. every year. Each year, some portion of those 4 million people try Instagram for the first time. And, none of them will ever know “the before” (my quotes).
To them, Instagram will just be the modern mall from the couch.
Amazon now has grocery stores
“Let me run to the corner Amazon store,” is about to become a real thing. Amazon this year has shown it’s about as hot and heavy for the grocery business as Ross was for Rachel over 10 seasons of Friends.
According to an Amazon spokesperson, Amazon now has in operation:
26 Amazon Go AMZN stores in Chicago, New York, San Francisco and Seattle
2 Amazon Go Grocery stores in Seattle and Redmond
4 Amazon Fresh Grocery stores in California
Amazon Go stores are generally 1,000 to 3,000 square feet and come with Amazon’s famous “Just Walk Out” computer vision checkout-free technology. Customers just walk in, take whatever they want off the shelves, and walk out. The best way to think about them is as an approximation of your local mini-mart without ever having to stand in line.
Amazon Go Grocery stores are like Amazon Go, only bigger. They are roughly 10,000 square feet and also come with more grocery items and, specifically, fresh produce. They, too, deploy “Just Walk Out” technology throughout the entirety of their shopping experiences.
Amazon Fresh, on the other hand, is slightly different. For one, it’s a full-scale grocery experience, roughly 30,000 to 40,000 square feet, with everything one would expect to find in his or her local grocery store. While it does not deploy “Just Walk Out” technology in the same manner, it does deploy a “Dash Cart,” which allows users of the cart to shop, bag items themselves, and then just walk out without standing in line.
All three concepts are nearly unparalleled experiences within the U.S. market today, and Amazon, according to a spokesperson for this article, confirmed that it soon plans to roll out out Go Grocery to Washington, D.C. and also to open additional Amazon Fresh stores in Naperville, IL; Whittier, CA; Long Beach, CA; Oak Lawn, IL; Schaumburg, IL; Bloomingdale, IL; and Woodland Park, NJ between now and the end of 2021.
So, effectively, Amazon will have a full-scale grocery store in three states inside of one year.
Barring one Giant Eagle pilot implementation at a convenience store just outside of Pittsburgh, not a single major U.S. retailer has even attempted a computer vision-based checkout-free experiment live and on the scale of any of the store concepts just described above.
All of which means Amazon, as of now, has a 30 store head start on the rest of the grocery industry in terms of redefining in-store convenience and the use of AI within retail.
This advantage may not seem like all that much now, but give it a few years and, state by state, Amazon could be the new standard bearer for physical grocery convenience, with unbeatable prices to boot — because, come to think of it, why should Prime Day only be an online phenomenon, when real-time, marked-to-market electronic shelf labels can pull off the exact same trick in-store?
If Facebook was the shot heard round the world, then Amazon may as well be the redcoated British army. Because Amazon is coming for grocery and its nearly $1.0 trillion prize.
And, in this coming period of U.S. retail history, there may not be anything the rest of industry can do to stop it.

Three Days Grace to Support Breaking Benjamin on 26-Date Summer Tour; Dallas Visit Scheduled for September 10th at Dos Equis Pavilion
Tumblr media
Three Days Grace, the internationally acclaimed and multi-platinum certified Canadian band, have confirmed an extensive 26-date summer tour opening for Breaking Benjamin. Three Days Grace will provide support in cities including St. Louis, Atlanta, Dallas, and Salt Lake City. Tickets and information regarding on sale times and dates are available here. The band was recently nominated for three 2019 Juno Awards, for “Album of the Year,” “Group of the Year,” and “Rock Album of the Year.” Said Neil Sanderson, drummer of the band: "We’re beyond thrilled to be nominated for three Juno awards. To be recognized by our home country for our most recent work is incredible!” The Juno Awards are presented annually to musical artists and bands to acknowledge their artistic and technical achievements in all aspects of music. Three Days Grace recently made history with their 14th #1 single on U.S. Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Songs Chart, “Infra-Red,” off the band’s most recent album, 2018’s Outsider. With this latest achievement, the band broke Van Halen‘s two-decade record of topping the Billboard chart. Additionally, the song is the 15th U.S. #1 single on Mediabase’s Active Rock Chart.
Since 2003, the band has staked a spot amongst the hard rock vanguard, breaking records, toppling charts, moving millions of units worldwide, and making history by holding the all-time record for “most #1 U.S.singles at Active Rock Radio ever” with 14. In 2015, Human marked the group’s second straight #1 slot on the Billboard Top Hard Rock Albums Chart as well as their fourth consecutive debut in Top 20 of the Top 200. It spawned two #1 singles “Painkiller” and “I Am Machine,” signaling their 13th overall and 5th consecutive number ones on the U.S. Active Rock Radio chart. Moreover, the four-piece consistently averaged a staggering 3.9 million monthly listeners on Spotify—remaining one of the most listened to rock bands in the world. In 2012, Transit of Venus soared to the Top 5 of the Top 200 and garnered a nod for “Best Rock Album of the Year” at the Juno Awards. The seminal One-X [2006] notched an RIAA triple-platinum certification as Three Days Grace [2003] was minted platinum and Life Starts Now went gold. To date, their veritable arsenal of number one includes "Chalk Outline," "The High Road," "Misery Loves My Company," "World So Cold," "Good Life," "Break," "Never Too Late," "Animal I Have Become," "Pain," "Just Like You," and "Home.
