Every time I rewatch Ready or Not, there's always a part of me at the beginning that thinks "what if she doesn't pull the card this time?"
Like ah yes, surely the deadly hide-and-seek movie won't have her pull the deadly hide-and-seek card, and they instead all play uno or something. Surely that will happen this time. That's how movies work

An Illicit Affair
Part Ten: The Movies
Pairing: Cillian Murphy (46) x Reader (23)
Warning: Age-Gap, Taboo Relationship, Infidelity
Tumblr media
Later that day, just as you were laying on your bed and tried to read a book, Lucy walked into your shared room and was surprised to see you.
"Y/N, fuck what are you doing here?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.
"I was just..." you hesitated, glancing briefly at Lucy before staring at the floor nervously. "Reading," you finished lamely, clutching the book you were supposedly reading tightly in your hands.
"I can see that, but why are you here?" she wanted to know. "I would have thought that you were hanging out with you know who tonight," she said quietly seeing that the dorm rooms at the university had rather thin walls.
"Nope, he changed his mind about us," you answered honestly, your voice trailing off in embarrassment. "I guess his consciousness got the better of him after all," you explained with a saddened voice, causing Lucy to purse her lips.
"Really? Why the sudden change?" she asked, her eyebrows raised, skepticism written all over her face. Her voice dripped with disbelief and concern.
"I don't know. I guess he feels guilty, I suppose," you mumbled, averting your gaze, unwilling to delve deeper into the issue at hand. You clutched the book tighter, a protective shield guarding your vulnerable emotions.
Lucy studied you closely, squinting at you as if scrutinizing your every detail.
"Look, I'm going to level with you," she began, her voice suddenly stern. "I think that him coming to his senses may be for the best. Not only is he your ex-boyfriend's dad, he is also married, right?" Lucy stated, her voice laced with caution.
"Yeah, but..." you trailed off, unsure how to respond. You appreciated Lucy's understanding and concern, but there was something unspoken lingering between you, something unsettling.
"It doesn't matter," you eventually muttered, deflecting her question. "I just need to clear my head now and forget about him," you insisted, fidgeting with the book.
"You do and, Y/N, just think about it, even if he wasn't married and was readily available to you, he would be way too old for you and, if anyone was to ever find out about your little affair, then the press would have a field day with it," Lucy said, her tone softening. "His career would suffer and your prospects of permanent employment at the hospital would be hindered as well," she explained.
Her words resonated in your mind, striking a chord deep within you. You had never considered the consequences of your actions on your professional life.
"I know, Lu," you sighed, closing the book and tossing it aside. "But I actually really enjoyed myself with him, you know?" you ventured, your voice quivering slightly with uncertainty. "I mean, it wasn't just the sex that was incredible. It's everything.  We could talk for hours about anything. He is smart, humble and very attentive. Plus, he is incredibly attractive and gentle as well. Unlike me, he is super creative and funny too," you explained just before Lucy interrupted you.
"And yet, you need to forget about him because, frankly put, he will never leave his wife for you," Lucy reasoned, crossing her arms over her chest. "And I highly doubt that he would jeopardize his career and reputation over an extramarital affair with a younger woman who happened to date his son in the past," she added grimly. "It's wrong on all levels, Y/N and I know that you know that," Lucy stressed, her eyes pleading with you to understand where she was coming from.
The truth of her words stung you, forcing you to confront the harsh realities of your situation. You swallowed, fighting back tears that threatened to fall.
"Yes, I do know that it's wrong," you finally conceded, your voice cracking. "It's not worth risking my future or his for something that can never amount to anything substantial," you admitted, and Lucy nodded, relief washing over her features.
"Exactly, Y/N," she praised, placing a comforting hand on your shoulder. "Now, I guess you don't really want to come to the movies with us tonight, seeing that we are going to watch Oppenheimer, right?" Lucy continued, her voice tinged with reluctance, understanding very well that watching Cillian on the big screen was too difficult for you right now.
"Actually, why not. The bloody advertisements are everywhere anyway. I see his face every day around town, and everyone is talking about the movie, so I may just as well watch it," you replied, swallowing a lump in your throat, receiving a warm smile from her as a reward.
"That's the spirit, Y/N," Lucy cheered, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "I am glad you are coming and guess who else will be there?" she asks casually, grinning mischievously.
"Who?" you ask, curiosity piqued.
"James," she replies triumphantly. "The cardiologist you have been flirting with at work before you hooked up with Max's dad," Lucy explained excitedly, grinning broadly.
"Really?" you ask, feigning surprise. "You noticed that?" you teased, raising an eyebrow playfully.
"Well, I do pay attention sometimes," Lucy retorted, rolling her eyes teasingly. "Besides, James is cute and smart. Lucas invited him but I think that you might actually enjoy his company," she winked, nudging you with her elbow.
"Alright, alright," you chuckled, relenting before looking for some clothes to wear but, as you rifled through your closet, searching for something comfortable to wear to the movies, your thoughts drifted back to Cillian.
You weren't sure whether you should be grateful for his abrupt departure or resentful for leaving you high and dry, so quickly. Regardless, his memory lingered, and the ghost of his touch still burned on your skin like a lingering kiss.
Eventually though, you found a pair of jeans and a loose shirt, not putting too much effort into your appearance. Realisticially, you were done with men for now and even James was slightly too old for you. Yet, you liked being in his presence and it was not as if you could deny the chemistry between you two at work.
He was certainly interested in getting to know you some more and this became even more evident when you entered the cinema later that evening, taking your seat in between him and your friend Lucy.
"So, Y/N," he began, his voice warm and inviting. "Tell me more about you," he requested politely, his eyes shining eagerly before the adds started rolling in.
"What do you want to know?" you wondered aloud, contemplating your response.
"Anything," he assured you, leaning towards you slightly. "What do you do when you aren't studying or working?" he asked, growing increasingly curious about you.
"I like to read, or listen to music," you responded, thinking for a moment. "I also like to go for walks, especially in nature. Do you enjoy hiking?" you asked James, turning your head sideways to glance at him.
"Not really," he shook his head, smiling sheepishly. "I am more of a city person and, as you know, I work a lot so I rarely get any free time to explore the great outdoors."
"I see," you said, nodding. "Well, if you ever want to try it, I am game. Maybe you can learn a thing or two from me," you teased, laughing lightly.
"Definitely," he smiled, patting his chest proudly. "I would appreciate that," he said. "Maybe we could take my BMW, drive down the coast and have a picnic or something," he smiled just before the theatre darkened and the movie previews came on.
"Maybe," you nodded before you took a deep breath, settling into your seat and gripping the armrests tightly.
Concentrating on the captivating visuals and engaging sound effects, you tried to push Cillian out of your mind which, of course, was proving to be a challenge as the familiar contours of his face kept appearing before your eyes on screen.
As the film progressed, you found yourself uncomfortably entranced by this man again and, soon enough, James noticed your discomfort especially during Cillian's intimate scenes with Florence Pugh.
However, you remained adamant to focus on the present and, despite the occasional flashbacks of your fleeting intimacy with Cillian, you desperately attempted to compartmentalize these thoughts.
Somehow, you got through the entire movie and, when the lights came back on, the credits were already rolling, indicating that the film had ended.
"Great movie," James commented, turning to look at you. "What did you think?" he asked you, smiling brightly.
"Yeah," you nodded, returning his smile awkwardly. "It definitely had its moments," you swallowed harshly while hearing some women behind you talking about Cillian's captivating performance, causing even James to roll his eyes and chuckle.
"You used to date his son, didn't you?" he asked while listening to the group behind him, now drooling over Cillian's captivating eyes and aura.
"Whose son?" you questioned, shooting James a puzzled look.
"Cillian's son," he chuckled. "You know, the lead actor? Cillian Murphy?" he said sarcastically, seeing that you did not really pay much attention to his question.
"Uhm, yeah," you acknowledged, your voice barely above a whisper. "It was a long time ago though," you added, swallowing hard, realizing that sharing this information made you feel slightly awkward.
"Did you ever get to meet his dad?" James asked, his tone hinting at a curious undertone.
"Yeah, a few times," you replied, fiddling with your fingers nervously. "Why do you ask?" you queried, lifting your gaze to meet his.
"Oh, I was just wondering since I met him once when his son was in the ER, and he seems like a decent guy. Really quiet though," James shared, shrugging casually.
"He is quiet, I guess," you stammered without revealing your true feeling towards Cillian and the fact that you had been intimate with each other only recently.
"So, do you want to grab a drink?" James asked after a minute of awkward silence, gesturing towards the exit. "Or maybe we can head to my penthouse instead? I have a bottle of Moet in the fridge, and you should really see the views from my place. Absolutely incredible," he suggested, noticing the heaviness in your gaze.
The mention of heading home jolted you back to reality, and you blinked several times before offering a weak smile. "Uhm, maybe another night," you hesitated, running your fingers through your hair nervously. "I'm quite tired," you lied, your voice barely audible.
"Yeah, sure. Whenever works for you. Unless I am working, I will make sure to be available," James agreed, flashing a sympathetic smile as you walked with him and the rest of the group while images of Cillian's face danced across your memory, his sensual whispers reverberating in your eardrums like forbidden promises.
You tried to shake off the images, but they persisted, weaving themselves into the fabric of your mind.
As you walked alongside James, you stumbled over your feet, lost in the swirling kaleidoscope of memories.
Determined to break free from the chains of the past, you forced a smile and plunged into a torrent of meaningless chatter. The laughter that escaped your lips was hollow, devoid of genuine mirth. You needed a distraction, something to blot out the haunting visions of Cillian's presence and the intimacy you shared with him.
Eventually, you arrived at campus where James said goodbye to you and Lucy.
"Sleep tight, Y/N," he whispered affectionately, his eyes filled with warmth and concern. "I will see you tomorrow," he reassured you, reaching out to squeeze your hand softly.
You could only muster a weak smile in return, trying to hide the turmoil raging inside you.
"Thanks, James," you murmured, squeezing his hand gently before stepping into the dormitory.
Once inside, you breathed a sigh of relief, welcoming the solitude that engulfed you and Lucy knew to let you be and not to bring up James or Cillian again.
After all, you were exhausted and needed some peace to sort through your feelings.
You slipped off your shoes and collapsed onto your bed, your heart racing like a runaway train. Memories of Cillian's passionate embrace crept into your mind, refusing to relinquish their hold on you and it wasn't until a week after that you heard from him again. He was giving you a heads up that he had been asked by the UNESCO foundation to present several awards at a charity event you and some fellow students were organizing for Empathy Week and whilst you weren't exactly surprised by his announcement, it worried you to see him again in this capacity.
Unbeknownst to you however, leading up to that message, Cillian too was struggling to come to terms with his feelings for you as well.
He had spent sleepless nights thinking about you; the taste of your lips, the scent of your hair, the intoxicating energy between you.
Despite knowing full well that he was trapped in a loveless marriage, unable to escape, he couldn't resist the magnetic pull drawing him further into your orbit.
As such, he became withdrawn and distant, spending most of his downtime holed up in his study, his mind racing with thoughts of you. He would often pace up and down his basement, pondering the implications of pursuing a relationship with you. His conscience weighed heavily on his shoulders, burdened by guilt and the fear of destroying both of your lives.
His wife Danielle soon became aware of his distant demeanor and moodiness and, every time she tried to initiate intimacy, he pushed her away with excuses of exhaustion or stress. This caused tensions to flare up between them, resulting in bitter arguments about their dissolving marriage.
Despite his attempts to distance himself from you, Cillian couldn't help but think about you constantly. He replayed the memories of your passionate encounter in his mind, longing for the chance to experience it again. Every day, he would find reasons to seek you out on social media, hoping for a glimpse of you and when he received the invitation to speak at the Empathy Week charity event organized by you and some other students, his initial reaction was one of dread.
The prospect of facing you again brought forth a whirlwind of conflicting emotions - anticipation, lust, shame, fear. Yet, the opportunity to contribute to a cause that held significance for both of you provided a strange sense of comfort. With trepidation, he accepted the invitation, secretly hoping to see you again but when Danielle and Max also confirmed their attendance at the event, his mind started spinning with the complications that awaited him. He wrestled with his guilty conscience, torn between his love for his family and his irresistible attraction to you which he knew would cause problems that evening if he wasn't careful.
To be continued...

The Merry Widow (1968) with Jeremy Brett
I've not been a lot on social media lately because of the complete takeover from US'ers (which - understandable, I'm worried and grieved too, but still there are other countries and issues and the way people often neglect to specify they're talking about the US and assume all their readers are in the US too is kind of obnoxious) so I've directed my very limited time and energy towards something which has given me a lot of joy in recent years and is often freely accessable too: old media. I'm making a valliant effort to actually finish Moby Dick and Les miserables and Raffles, I've read the first collection of Arsène Lupin, I'm trying to get into Hercule Poirot (not entirely convinced yet but we'll see), and last weekend I watched The Merry Window movie of 1968, starring Jeremy Brett. It is entirely on youtube here. Not in the best visual or auditory quality, sadly (it has not been remastered yet), but still very watchable.
I went into this without any knowledge of the story or rich history of this operette, only having heard a few fragments of the songs before. And I was so, so entertained throughout, even though I did not understand everything that was going on.
A summary of my prompt research: The Merry Window (Die Lustige Witwe) was composed by Austrian-Hungarian composer Franz Lehár and first performed on stage in 1905 in Wien, running a very succesful row of almost 500 live performances. It has since been adapted both on screen and stage often, even through this very day. The Metropolitian Opera has a comprehensive synopsis on the story on their website, but more fun is this comic.
The basic story goes as follows: the embassy of a small Balkan country (fictional, but likely to be inspired by Montenegro), situated in Paris, is thrown into merry chaos as they learn that a very rich widow originally from the same Balkan country also is residing in Paris. Shenagans and plotting occur to try and convince her to marry one of their countryman, so her sweet sweet money won't leave the country, which is in dire need of it. There's only a problem: the proposed candidate, a count played by Jeremy Brett, already knows the widow, and the two of them have a History. Avoidant behaviour, sassiness, misunderstandings and other delicious drama ensue.
I did not expect the amount of music and songs in this movie. I think 80% or 90% of the script is in song rather than dialogue. Entire performances are shown, during which the plot just stands still, and honestly? I loved it. Modern movies/shows often move too fast for my sluggish autistic brain to keep up with, and this languid tempo just worked well for me. The folk and, I imagine, quite scandalous can-can dances are a joy. I'm usually not that fond of the more classical technique of singing but I found the music here quite gorgeous, too, a delightful mix of classical sound with fun folk elements. Jeremy Brett's rich voice really stood out of me. You can listen to the entire soundtrack here.
Jeremy Brett is a treat to watch in his role as a bit of a playboy, avoiding responsiblities and commitment and feelings of heartbreak by dancing and drinking at a local nightclub each night instead. Not suprisingly for everyone who has seen him in Granada's Sherlock Holmes: he's really excellent at dramatic posing, lounging on surfaces not meant for that, and 'trying to look cool but actually besotted'. There's a lot of humour in the dialogue and performances of the entire cast, too. For example, there's an entire extramarital affair going on right under the nose of an antirely oblivious baron's nose, and it's pretty hilarious. Further example of some funny lines: "What have you been doing lately?" Absolutely nothing!" "Excellent!" Jeremy's rivalry with the widow (played by Mary Costa) is especially a lot of fun, both really sell that part. I really got quite emotional by the final "Love unspoken, faith unbroken..."
There's an interesting background of historical social context to this operette, too: widows in that time enjoyed an amount of financial freedom denied to either unmarried or married women, and watching high class men competing for a woman's money was, I suppose, a nice bit of social commentary. I also really enjoyed a song by a group of men all wondering what they have to offer women if it isn't money - a question, in my opinion, that may be asked more often. The widow using her relative freedom to protect another woman from scandal at the end was rather sweet, too. The story ends, of course, by not upsetting the status quo too much. But it's such a fun ride.
All in all, very much recommended.

i learned that Marilyn Monroe had 12 abortions
Tumblr media
Despite being a Hollywood icon, many basic details about Marilyn Monroe's life and death remain unknown.
The Netflix original movie "Blonde," featuring Ana de Armas, rekindles interest in her rise to fame and her relationships with men.
However, her legacy still leaves people curious about whether she had any children after her untimely passing.
The Genius and the Goddess: Arthur Miller & Marilyn Monroe is a biography on Marilyn and Miller written by Miller’s friend Jeffrey Meyers.
The author said that Marilyn had admitted to having a startling total of 12 abortions, however it is unclear whether or not she voluntarily had them.
In the past, Marilyn frequently engaged in extramarital affairs with men, and abortion was used as “birth control” in the 1950s.
“When selling herself, or with romantic liaisons and long-time lovers, Marilyn, always eager to please, meekly agreed to men’s demands to have sex without contraceptives and got pregnant again and again,” he writes.

Dating Modern!Jace would include…
Tumblr is being dumb and not letting me edit my draft of the Jace smut so… I’m gonna do another post until it sorts it’s shit out 💀
The SFW section is pretty gender neutral, there’s a NSFT section below the cut and that’s more female reader (sorry!)
Tumblr media
🌿 SFW 🌿
Jace is quite literally the single best boyfriend EVER, that boy is so attentive to you and to your needs it’s unreal
Feeling sad one day? Jace is right by your side, softly asking if you’re okay, do you need anything, do you want to talk about it? And he just listens without any judgement, so understanding and wanting to be there for you
If you tell him you need space, he’ll give it to you though - he might not be happy about leaving your side but he doesn’t want to push or upset you further. He knows you’ll talk about it when you’re ready
He’s absolutely a romantic, he loves holding hands and pressing kisses to your cheeks, loves telling you that he loves you and is proud that you’re his
He knows all of your favourite foods, all of your favourite drinks, favourite tv shows, movies etc. Jace has taken the time to remember everything about you, about what you like and dislike, what’s important to you etc. Not really in a stalker way, he just wants to show he cares about you and what you enjoy
If it’s cold out or you’re out late one night, expect him to give you his coat - he’ll shiver but insist that you need it more than him, he’s absolutely not about to let you get even a little cold while he’s with you
Jace is an absolute gentleman and always polite to your parents, to your friends etc. It’s just so endearing that he makes sure to be nice to everyone. Your parents are never worried when you go out together because they know Jace is a good guy and won’t let you get harmed, that he’ll ALWAYS have you home on time.
He would absolutely want to pay for all of your dates (Targaryens and Velaryons are WAY too rich for their own good) but you insist that you help pay too - you’re not a charity case, and while you know he offers because it’s the gentlemanly thing to do, you want to be equal in your relationship
Most of your dates consist of little dinners, movie trips, and evenings in his room. Most of the time you’re in his room, you just curl up together and lazily kiss as TV or music play in the background.
Jace was nervous to kiss you the first time, worried it would make you uncomfortable, so you had to be the one to initiate that first kiss - he loves kissing you, he’s fine initiating after, but that first time he waits for you to make the first move because he doesn’t want to force you into it
You love meeting and having dinner with Jace’s family: his mother is nice, his brothers soon become like little brothers to you too, and you get on very well with Baela and Rhaena, his cousins/step-sisters. His stepfather is harder to read, but Jace insists Daemon likes you well enough - “you’d know if Daemon didn’t like you,” He admits, chuckling somewhat anxiously.
He knows that you’re the one for him the day you meet Vermax, his dog; all of his family have pets, and Vermax is his German shepherd. You’re absolutely thrilled to meet Vermax, and the dog soon happily licks and plays with you - and Jace knows you’re it for him, because Vermax has clearly given his approval and loves you
Once you’ve met Vermax, a lot of your dates soon become going on walks together with him, which both you and Jace love
You know that while Jace loves his family, it can admittedly be somewhat of a sore spot at times; his “father” Laenor died when he was young, though he admits to you in private one night that he knows his father was another man who also died, that he and his brothers Luke and Joffrey were actually the result of an extramarital affair. It’s something of an open secret in his family, something his uncles on his mother’s side constantly sneer and mock him about
Speaking of those uncles… You met his uncles at a family gathering you attended with Jace once, surprised that they were around Jace’s age. Aegon tried to make a move on you, touching your butt, and the gathering ended awkwardly with your handprint on Aegon’s cheek, Jace being held back by his stepfather, and Aegon’s brother Aemond getting into fisticuffs with Luke. Helaena, his aunt, seemed nice though, if nothing else.
Jace 100% let’s you borrow his clothes, he absolutely LOVES seeing you wear his t shirt when you sleep over or you wearing his hoodie when it’s cold. You love wearing his clothes because they smell like him, and it makes you feel all warm inside
🔥 NSFT (under the cut) 🔥
Much like kissing, Jace doesn’t want to push you too far, so it got to the point where you were wanting to sleep with each other so badly but you were worried he didn’t want to.
You were the one who had to say to him “I want to do it”, which made him flush a little - but he still managed to smile and nod, because “yeah, I do too”
Your first time is sweet, a little awkward but still nice, and afterwards he pulls you to him, still panting, and murmurs that he loves you because he’s an absolute romantic
That boy EXCELS at foreplay, he makes it his life’s mission to pleasure you until you’re a writhing sweating mess, and that’s just by using his fingers and mouth - you always have at least three orgasms before you even get to penetration.
Jace was a little anxious at first about his cock, he was worried about size etc. He really didn’t need to be. He’s not extremely thick but he is long, and you wondered initially if he’d even fit. Safe to say, he stopped feeling insecure about his cock pretty quickly once he realised how much you enjoyed it
He was also a little worried that he wouldn’t be able to make you feel good - again, a needless worry, since you discover he’s MORE than able to pleasure you
His favourite position is probably missionary (because he likes looking at you, of course, he’s a total romantic), but he also loves when you take control and ride him; the sight of you bouncing on his cock, seeking your pleasure, is a HUGE turn on for him. He’s not opposed to other positions - he enjoys them - but those two are his favourites.
He always makes sure the two of you have protection; it’s not that he’s against the idea of children with you, but he doesn’t want to risk it until you guys are older and married - that, and he also wants to be sure neither of you have any diseases etc. He is VERY responsible, it must be said.
He prefers to have sex in a bed, whether it’s yours or his, and to take his time so he can make you feel good - but he’s absolutely not opposed to the odd quickie here and there
He absolutely would not want to share you, so he’s not really into public sex - though you two do take a few risks, like in his mother and stepfather’s room, upstairs whilst your families are downstairs, etc.
He also wouldn’t want to hurt you, but if you asked him to spank you… he wouldn’t say no 👀 he’d be a little nervous about it, but your moaning would spur him on
Jace always makes sure you cum before him, he’ll force himself to wait until you’re squeezing his cock and clutching him, all but screaming his name, and then he’ll let go
You never thought someone could be beautiful as they cum - but Jace is. His moan is so primal and guttural as he buries himself deep inside of you, entire body trembling as his arms struggle to support his weight, breath shuttering out of him from the effort of it
You never thought it possible for someone to be beautiful when they cum - but Jace is. He groans so wonderfully, a noise from deep in his chest, hips stuttering before he thrusts so deep into you that you can feel him hitting your cervix, like he’s trying to bury himself inside of you
Afterwards, you hold each other and just glow in the aftermath of your love making, and he smiles at you so softly 🥹 he just loves you and would do anything for you

I agree the ‘fuck the patriarchy’ keychain is a literal keychain rather than words spoken. to me this still has multiple interesting meanings. firstly that if you know what we know, you’re inclined to think huh that’s totally a woman’s keychain.
I also agree that taylor wrote the atw10 lyrics more recently, and that she’s playing to the swiftie audience with it, ie playing into the idea it’s about a man (they think it’s Jake G, right?). this gives quite a clever meaning: he’s the kind of man who endorses feminist slogans superficially. but is careless about actually implementing them = because of how he tossed the keys, she’s staring at this feminist slogan on the ground, realising she, a woman, has to get down on the ground and sort of grovel to pick them up, because of his careless actions. it’s his hypocrisy that she’s being confronted with. this echoes the theme she’s pushing with the film of ‘feeling used by an older man, when you thought it meant so much more’.
this keychain hypocrisy also works when you read the lover as a woman - she’s being a poor ally to her partner who’s a fellow woman. women can use other women too, and she’s more likely to be outwardly feminist, making the hypocrisy hurt more when she doesn’t treat taylor right. I think some people are missing how hurt taylor is by seeing that slogan on the ground, left for her to pick up, and how cleverly efficient with meaning the line is.
also I’ve been thinking about a wild meta layer of meaning do bear with me here - I was watching brokeback mountain recently. I literally had to pause when Jake’s character (jack) gets tossed some car keys, fumbles and has to pick them up off the ground. I was like omg taylor did you???? reference this moment? jack’s homophobic father in law is the one who tosses him the keys. despite being married to a woman, it’s implied jack’s extramarital flirtations and affairs with men is gossiped about around town, and seems to be a contributing factor to his father in law hating him. as shown in actions like carelessly tossing him the car keys in this scene. crazy and meta ik, but not hard for me to personally believe that taylor was like ‘oh you want a song about jake? how about I reference his closeted gay cowboy movie’ ajkqkjdjflfmnslkd
This is so great thanks Anon!!!

CLK - psychological manipulation and emotional ab*se of a child - the Great Depression threatening everyone and Black Tuesday on its way
TRN - self-neglect resulting in death (pretty obvious Jake arranged to die where Nancy found him)

DED - m*rder of course
GTH - r*pe and inc*st (Clara’s mother and grandfather) - slavery and neglect resulting in mass m*rder - just plain old mansl*ughter/m*rder (Charlotte)
SPY - m*rder - terrorism
LIE - threats (Niobe) - gang violence
SEA - mansl*ughter vía mob violence (Alda Lawrence) - kidn*pping
MID - lots of burning at the stake
It’s just so interesting to me that I played these games so often when I was young and never picked up on some of these (kinda like all the dirty jokes in Disney movies you only notice as an adult) but they make a fuller, more human story imo.
Please let me know if y’all have more!

Jesus's name is based on the Greek rendering of Yeshua. His full name would be Yeshua ben Yosef due to the naming conventions of the time. In English, his name is "Joshua, son of Joseph".
Based on this evidence, it is safe to assume the Gospels are actually fan-fictions of the popular anime and manga series JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.
With that in mind, we can correct a few misunderstandings plaguing the fandom. Jesus is the son of Joseph Joestar and was conceived through an extramarital affair similar to Josuke. The reason Joseph disappears from the plot is because he flew back to America.
The fanfics are all told from the perspective of non-Stand users. However, several mentions of a "Kingdom of Heaven" implies that is the name of Jesus's Stand. The author seems to be taking the thematic approach that the Jorge Joestar novels took where Stands are named after movies.
The prologue chapters would take place around the same time as Stardust Crusaders but the bulk of it takes place after Dio's defeat. The depiction of Jesus's anointment would coincide with when Dio got his Stand and caused everyone in the Joestar line to get a Stand. Meanwhile, his 40 days of temptation was actually one of Dio's minions attempting to recruit him into Dio's forces. The reason why the "devil" vanishes from the plot is because Jotaro defeated Dio and Dio is no longer a threat to the plot.

I love Candice, so no offense to her, but Nicole wasn't outted to be in an extramarital affair. And once the chaos died down, her ass was still secretly seeing him after the wife dragged both him and her.
Nicole, however, continues to let the work speak for itself. She has been booking gigs post Sleepy Hollow and just now getting the recognition she deserves. She deserves more to be honest, but she's slowly getting there. When people think of her, they think of her most recent work like Black Mirror, Juneteenth, Scenes of a Marriage. etc. All stellar performances. She didn't let her mistreatment on a show hinder her growth as an actress. As an artist.
Candice, on the other hand, could've been booking gigs left and right to keep her distracted from The Flash and work those acting chops in another environment. At first, I thought maybe it was being stuck in Vancouver (she complained about this all the time and that she missed LA), but it was probably because of that idiot. Candice probably could've booked a movie in Vancouver because most movies are filmed there anyway. But she just wanted to follow JR around. 😭
We talk about the other LA, but Candice is another one that lacks passion and motivation. Actually, she probably has LA beat. As much as LA throws shit at the wall, hoping it sticks, I got to hand it to her. She's consistent in not giving up. Candice has put more effort into her relationship with JR than she ever has in her career. Leaps and bounds! (Maybe these turn of events is karma...🫣)
Also, she dumped poor Zoe for that man. 😢 I know Zoe was shook and was like wtf? I'm sure she's fine with Candice's parents, but dogs know when they've been abandoned.
You’re not wrong…
When it comes to Candice and Nicole a toxic work environment holding them back is basically where the comparison ends. Candice could be doing more but she chooses not to. And by more we don’t even mean going to auditions or booking jobs, we’re just talking about basic networking, getting brand deals and setting herself up for success post Flash.
If she was taking a break and getting back on track after leaving a toxic work environment it would be one thing but she’s not. Her career stalled, her image took a nose dive and instead of trying to rectify the situation she’s instead seemingly content being arm candy for the jackass that helped get her to this negative space. It makes no sense.

Love letter masterpiece: Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
I recently had reason to fire up Fallout: New Vegas for this article, and guess what it reminded of...? Yes, "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" (WFRR?) - of course! Actually, the connection is a bit indirect, as in New Vegas a classic song plays on the radio (as these games love to set the atmosphere with what I assume is royalty-free or cheap-to-license classic music), "Why Don't You Do Right" by Peggy Lee.
Tumblr media
Yes, the song of this famous singing scene where Jessica Rabbit displays her sultry charms.
WFRR? is a masterpiece. It pays homage to classic cartoons, it manages to be an actual, valid noir story and yet accessible (somewhat) to kids, it's a buddy cop story, it's a convincing combination of animation and live action, and it's original and funny. And maybe it's a bit too much for general audiences.
A noir story
A story can take on the trappings and the tropes of a genre or previous stories, and yet miss the point. Like in "Doctor Who" where the 13th Doctor writing team let the main character say things that sound like The Doctor but without any sense of context or the values beneath. (Best. Video essay. Ever.) Or like Fallout 3 does not understand how to offer tradeoff choices the way previous games did.
Is that true of WFRR? I don't think so.
The tale starts with a washed-up, alcoholic detective hired to dig up dirt on an extramarital affair. In doing so, he gets involved with Roger Rabbit who gets framed for a murder. They run from the law together. Eventually the protagonist, Eddie Valiant, overcomes the trauma of having his brother murdered and uncovers a conspiracy masterminded by a corrupt politician/judge to erase all Toons for a money-making scheme that is heralded as the coming of a new age.
Take away the cartoon elements and you immediately find a completely valid noir story beyond simply using the visual and auditory trappings of the time. They're not fooling us, they really, actually made a noir story.
Tumblr media
While this is a brilliant move in terms of making a great movie, it's also very risky in terms of mainstream appeal. It being Disney and featuring lots of beloved cartoon characters, it's easy to see how the target demographic can be kids. But there's murder, corruption, unlawful behavior, drinking, there's even a cute Toon erased in full view. WFRR? is just not quite daring enough to be the adult cartoon it at heart is.
Tumblr media
It's also a trailblazer, through the same themes I just mentioned, for the whole phenomenon of putting elements into animated movies that kids don't get and make adults laugh. Except here it's not so much only jokes as all the elements of the story. Adults get what's going on all-to-well!
Tumblr media
WFRR? may, by necessity, not hit you with the full force of a noir experience. But when Marvin is shot through some blinds we don't see the murder in a way reminiscent of a movie language that evaded censorship by hinting and selecting perspectives very well. So, it may seem like a trick, but it's the same trick pulled in period pieces that were following the Code.
Playing with the familiar
WFRR? takes us back to a time where the modern, pre-internet world didn't exist yet, but there are things that bind our experience and the one in the movie together. The cartoons that we watched on Saturday mornings? Back then they played before a newsreel and movie.
The world the finale hints at where the car is king and public transport spotty was the reality for many Americans living when the movie came out (and in many ways, still is). In a sense, the movie says that the baddies won. Eddie and Roger may thwart one plan and save the Toons, but history will still swallow most of their world. But to think a Disney cartoon actually throws shade on the dark side of capitalism and its notion of progress? Waaaaay out there.
Tumblr media
At the same time it brings us to a time where Depression era poverty lingers, before (more) widespread prosperity. A world where there was no TV and hence you had to go out to amuse yourself, and where you knew your neighbors much better than you do now. It's a small world where a trip to the beach may be a sweet memory. And the movie does it oh so well.
A love letter also to classic cartoons
The slapstick and humor of the movie also deserve credit for bringing us back to the shenanigans of classic cartoon characters. It's almost as if we see them "before they cleaned up their act."
Tumblr media
It's oddly believable that Toons have problems and careers, and yet established within the limits of a movie, imitating the originals with, well, original characters, and giving us the classics in a new light.
It does this with an ease that never distracts us away from the story as it unfolds.
Tumblr media
It's also a buddy cop story under the hood as Eddie and Roger set out together as this mismatched duo that has to clear the name of one of them while getting the other one out of the rut he's in. Once you start looking, you begin seeing how effortlessly the script weaves these threads together.
Too many classic moments
Come on, talking ammo?!? This is just batshit insane, especially since the ammunition aged poorly. The irreverent nature of parts of WFRR? harks back to a time when Bugs Bunny was constantly cross-dressing and shorts allowed a lot more leeway in what stories could be told. It's reminiscent of the many characters that actually didn't make it into the movie that were even more wild than that.
Finally, this:
Tumblr media
(Jessica Rabbit's famous quote: "I'm not bad. I'm just drawn that way.")
This is probably the best moment straddling between old and new, the noir vibe and humor. WFRR? is full of genius moments that way. It may not necessarily be a movie to show to kids, but it's worth watching all the same.

In defense of Eloise (the wedding movie)
--part of the miscarriage plot was that messy sister's ex blamed her for the miscarriage. No one told Eloise this.
--if my siblings spent the whole lead up to my wedding acting like they were forced to be there, I would also tell them not to come
--she is clearly stressed and trying to impress her future in-laws, and none of her family is helping with that
--while it's not messy sister's fault that the wife showed up, it does not change the fact that all of Eloise's future in-laws know she is related to someone who had an extramarital affair. Its also possible that they might think Eloise condoned the affair.
--her brother told her in-laws about his sex life and pissed on someone. I love my brother and I would still uninvite his ass if he pulled that shit.
--there are... uncomfortable implications about two white siblings banding together to ostracize their mixed-race siblings.
Your opinion is still valid. I just also think that Eloise is going through it and deserves some slack.
Context: this post
Oh yeah, definitely. I do get exactly where you're coming from, and a lot of stuff was revealed after the movie had already led us to forming some specific opinions. I do think Eloise still could have handled some things better, though; even after watching the full movie and having all the context for her behavior, I think that... god I can't remember the exact phrasing, but there was a moment at the start where she said something along the lines of "We've drifted apart, but I'm sure we'll all be best friends again in no time."
And that's... I think that colors a lot of my opinion on her in regards to Alice specifically and Paul by extension. There's that really strange disconnect where she seems so casually excited and not even considering that a really horrible situation might have had some strong feelings lingering about.
(Full disclosure, a lot of this is probably influenced by my own faults and foibles, and I don't want to go too deep into self-analysis because I don't have room in my schedule for that kind of self-loathing lmao.)
It's not really excusing the extent of Alice and Paul's behavior, and I don't fault her for telling them 'listen, just don't come, then,' after the whole Situation at the dinner party, but.. IDK I just can't get past that initial Bright Eyed Optimism where she seems to be shoving Last Summer under the bed and pretending it didn't happen. I can't imagine that she didn't notice that Alice was avoiding her, or how long it took her siblings to actually respond? I mean, I guess she could have just been caught up in wedding planning, but that shock she had at Alice being hurt, in the limo...
It's just... it's an ugly and complex intersection of situations, and it's hard to paint any of the main cast as a villain (since Henrique, Dom, and Jonathan are secondary or tertiary characters). The siblings and Mom are all just Going Through It at the same time and it's a bad, bad time because nobody's well enough to really help the others through their shit (except Alice and Paul doing their best for each other, which isn't great).
Nobody's the villain but I do have somewhat more pity for Alice than Eloise, just because of the known specifics (miscarriage+breakup vs medical realization) and their life circumstances (white collar working class vs inherited wealth), and... yeah, Alice is a dick. But Eloise is rich and, in a lot of scenes, seems more interested in going through the motions (holding Alice up while she pukes) and controlling the situation (yelling that this is her wedding) than in actually understanding why people are upset with her.

Etymology nonnie here!
Since neither of the options I wanted to win the poll are going to win (adieu, superheroes and cowboys, you'll always be dear to my heart), I have to try and be corrupt for once, or as close as I'm going to allow myself to be, and go to support the current possible winner I think deserves victory. Also, I'm procrastinating (I have to fill an application form to inscribe my master's thesis—hopefully I used the correct terms, English being my second languages means I'm suddenly an ignorant when it comes to specialized terminology—, and I hate doing it. I hate filling forms. I hate interacting with burocracy).
Now, both options that are currently on the lead when I'm writing this are the 1930s Hollywood IF and the 1970s Mafia IF. I'll speak the truth. Aesthetically I prefer the former (I'll choose anything before the 1960s over anything from after when it comes to aesthetics). Yet, the Mafia has such an allure that it's so difficult to ignore. The machismo, the always in denial homoeroticism, the hot yet dangerous submission to the Boss/Don. Yet, the Hollywood one is not so removed from the world of crime the Mafia one introduces. If I understand correctly, the dark side of Hollywood is finally brought to light.
Now, I do admit all the options on the poll are great. I want all of them. I'm greedy like that, shame on me.
So, I'll disappoint Selfie here. The dark charm and allure of the Mafia has not seduced me enough. Had the setting been on the 1940s as the Godfather first movie, I would gone for that. But I love 1930s cinema too much. I love the transition to colour (I adore the technicolor aesthetic). I love the inclusion of sound. The musicals. The fashion. The elegance. The glamour.
And including the dark aspects of all of it? The crime that was behind? The chance to be gay but also a movie star under the Hays code? I'm sold.
I initially wrote this thinking I was going to support the Mafia. Yet, the aesthetics won me over. I need an MC speaking with a Transatlantic accent, and damn it all, I'll do everything in my hands to get it. Had the 70s had better fashion I could have been dissuaded, but that's not the case.
So, the ones who desire to follow me and be dear, in spirit to me. You know what you shall do. Smile, reader, and go to the poll. Do your duty to this blog, and choose. Yet, remember, O mortal. Your choice determines our fate. And you'll have to live with the RO's wearing 1970s fashion and hairstyles if you go for the Mafia. Or you'll enjoy the elegance and glamour of the 1930s, and all the dark aspects hid beneath their pristine and resplendent surface.
I am going to have to disagree with you etymology nonnie! 70s fashion is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G sequin dresses? Sarah Fawcett bangs? Suits with bell bottoms? Coloured sunglasses? Gold chains atop a well groomed toned hairy chest? Delicioso! Cher in the 70s and Al Pacino are style icons mc could dance to disco!
But yeah I do like the idea of the hays code, the extramarital affairs, the publicity, the dramatic acting the crazy colourful makeup they had to use to be able to catch it on black and white and just the rampant drug use and even the sleazy executives that actors had to sleep with to a get a role. All that is very tantalizing. Developing a real romance with your costar? Love the drama and glamour
Etymology and selfie butting heads here I see 😌
