Whumptober 27

No. 27: “You drew stars around my scars; But now I’m bleeding.”

Matches | Scars | “Let me see”

Day 27! A continuation of Marlowe and Solomon's adventure. Last part was in Day 24. CW: nonbinary whumpee, immortal whumpee, vampire caretaker, nudity (consensual), branding, scars, talk of past injuries, forced feeding, negative self talk and bad mental space. Some angsty fluff and awkward tension.

They had finally made it across the river. The threat of the vampire encampment looming far behind them. It had taken another day or two to hike to the base of the mountain, where they had been camping for the past few days, regaining their strength before they made the trek over its peaks.

Thankfully there was a small cave, hidden by some trees and bushes. Enough room to keep the sunlight out during the day, and the warmth inside during the night. A small creek ran by only a short trek away, filled with fresh fish and plants for Lo, and a source of clean water.

It was perfect.

Almost too perfect.

But they knew they couldn’t stay there forever. The pair would take advantage of the amenities while they could. For Lo, that meant fishing and collecting as much food and drinking water as possible. For Sol, it meant ridding himself of the filth and dried blood that had been piling up over the past weeks of travel.

He had barely managed to wash himself once they crossed the river, but they were pressed for time, trying to get to safety. And the river was too rough and dangerous to really take a beneficial bath.

So now Sol was taking advantage.

The sun had just dipped below the horizon. Giving off enough light for the world to still be visible, but not enough heat to burn the vampire. It was the perfect time.

He had stripped, wading in the shallow water up to his thighs, before lying down in the sand at the bottom and letting the water rush over his skin. He tipped his head back, feeling it soak into his long, dark hair, and carefully combed through with his fingers. He longed for some good soap- his hair had been greasy and tangled, and it was one of his proudest features. But the water would have to do as he soaked it thoroughly, combing out the knots.

Sol flinched, ducking further under the water as he heard footsteps from down the creek bank. His heart paused its racing when he realized it was just the human, walking along the edge of the bank.

Lo’s footsteps paused when they noticed the vampire soaking in the water- his cloak and clothes piled on a nearby rock.

“I- I’m sorry, I- I didn’t know you were over here, I thought-” Lo tripped over their words, averting their eyes.

“What are you doing?” Solomon asked, sitting up in the water. It barely rose over the top of his stomach when he sat down, baring his chest and shoulders to the open air.

“I’m just- just checking on my traps. I wanted to see if I’d caught anything I could eat tonight. I didn’t mean to interrupt-”

“You’re fine- you’re not interrupting.” Sol stated, moving back to work out the knots and tangles in his hair.

The next few moments passed in an unbearable silence as Lo pulled the traps out of the water, revealing nothing but a few small crawdads and some weeds. The crawdads could be boiled, it’d give them a bit of meat. Better than nothing.

“Do you want to come in?” Sol mumbled, barely above a whisper. Before Lo could respond or protest Sol continued speaking. “The water’s nice, it’ll- it’ll be nice to wash off, I mean-”

“Are you telling me I stink?” Lo teased, pulling the trap onto the bank.

Sol flinched back, the water splashing lightly around him. “Okay, all humans stink. You have a certain smell-”

“A certain smell! What does that mean?”

“It’s like, musky? Like earth, and- and firewood. It’s hard to explain.” Solomon glanced down at the water, seeing his reflection briefly below him, trying to find something else to say. There was a splash beside him as Lo entered the water, having quickly stripped of their clothes.

“You- you seem to be moving around a lot better-” Sol mumbled.

Lo nodded before diving fully under the water and bobbing back up, wiping their now wet hair from their face. “My foot’s nearly completely healed. It’s not perfect though.”

“That’s good. We’ll wait til it’s perfect before we start the climb over the mountain.” Sol groaned slightly as he pulled at a particularly tricky knot. He really needed to brush through his hair more often.

“Here- let me see.” Lo stated, and Sol felt the human’s presence at his back in the water.

He didn’t resist as the human grabbed ahold of his hair, carefully unpicking the tangles and knots that he couldn’t quite reach. When the knot was released he felt Lo’s fingers combing through the strands, pulling them together at the nape of his neck, threading fingers through the strands at the top of his head.

“Lo- what are you doing?”

“I’m braiding it. It’ll keep it from getting so tangled. You have nice hair, you should take care of it.”

Solomon scoffed, closing his eyes at the feeling of Lo carding through his hair.

“It, it reminds me of my mother. But I never knew how to take care of it.”

Lo paused for a second before continuing to pull the strands through their fingers. “You had a mother?”

“Of course. Vampires had to come from somewhere, we’re not born this way.”

“I- I thought you- I-”

“There’s a lot of misconceptions. Every vampire is turned though, at some point or other in their life. My mother she- she had hair like mine. Longer even. But that’s all I remember about her- it was- a long time ago.”

Lo’s hands paused- their mind flashing back to their own mother. Lo’s memory was faded and spotty over the countless lives they had lived, but they always remembered their mother.

Marlowe finished the braid in the silence, listening to the water rush around them. As they tied up the ends their eyes cast to the nape of the vampire’s neck, a circular brand embedded in their pale skin. They couldn’t help but let their eyes wander further- finally taking in a good look at the vampire’s body for the first time.

He was no doubt muscular- strong, incredibly agile. But there were countless scars littered across his back. Whip marks, cuts, old burns, but the most prominent was the brand. Lo couldn’t help but let their fingers brush lightly across the raised marks, taking in the lines and curves of the symbol that they didn’t recognize.

Solomon pulled away at the touch, splashing through the water as they turned around to face the human.

“What the hell are you doing?” he snapped, instantly getting defensive.

Lo retreated away from them slightly, the light dimming further behind the horizon, the water suddenly growing colder.

“What- what happened?” Lo whispered. Their eyes automatically scanned towards the front of Sol’s chest, where just as many scars and lashes covered their body.

Solomon sighed, turning away and pulling his knees to his chest.

“It- it was a long time ago.” He whispered. His mind went back to the brand on his neck- the fire and racing pain that had grown in the pit of his stomach. Even now he could remember the pain- the shame and the agony as it had bit into his skin. Being held down by the others as they watched and laughed. Being told it was "a right of passage." "He should feel lucky." He hung his head on his chest, his voice soft and shaking.

“It was- part of the process. Of being turned. It’s done to all the new vampires when they find their tribe. It means they accept you- that you can trust and be trusted.”

“That’s- that’s cruel.” Lo shuddered. They had felt a similar fire against their own skin. A branding iron. Or a match, or a torch. They just didn’t have the scars to prove it. “And the- the rest of it?” Lo asked carefully. Not wanting to push any more buttons or cross any more boundaries.

Solomon’s voice got even softer and for the first time Lo could feel his vulnerability.

“I- I had to learn. Symbols of- of my disobedience, and my mistakes. And now they’re- they're symbols of my betrayal.” Solomon clenched his hands in fists, watching the water rush around his skin.

He had abandoned his family. Abandoned the only life he’d ever known with the only other vampires that had shown some semblance of care for him. For a human that he had insisted on saving.

Solomon brought his head back up as he heard a sniffle of tears from the human, Lo was wiping their eyes as they turned away from his gaze.

“I- I’m sorry.” Lo whispered. Their breath light against the cooling air. “I can make it on my own, you don’t have to stay.”

Solomon shook his head, the braid Lo had made falling over his shoulder. “Even if I wanted to go back I couldn’t. My fate would be worse than yours. Vampires don’t forgive easily.”

Lo wiped away another strand of tears as the vampire moved closer in the water, grabbing their hand and pulling it away from their face.

“Lo- I don’t regret taking you away from that place.” He whispered, leaning in so close that the human could smell the venom in his breath. “You deserved better.”

Marlowe paused for a moment, holding their breath and taking in the closeness of the vampire, the nakedness of their bodies- the movement of the water around them, and Lo closed their eyes.

They took in a shaky breath as the vampire's presence grew closer, the water shifting around them where they knelt. Marlowe opened their eyes to find Solomon staring into them, almost as if he was trying to read their soul.

“Thank you for, for rescuing me.” Lo whispered, finally matching the intensity of his gaze. “But can I ask one thing from you?”

Sol responded with silence, and the human proceeded.

“Feed from me. Please.” Lo continued before he could protest, cutting off his words. “I know you haven’t been feeding as much as you need to. You’ve been more irritable, and tired, and- and it’s the least I can do in exchange for the protection you’ve given me.”

Solomon turned his head away, breaking the gaze the human had placed on him, even if just to hide his tears from Lo. He didn’t deserve to feed after everything they’d been through- after Lo’s countless injuries and deaths. The last thing they needed to worry about was having their blood drained by a blood-thirsty monster.

He was forced to look back into the human’s eyes as they pulled his face closer, a small, gentle hand on his cheek.

“Please, Solomon. I can’t see you starving yourself like this.”

Solomon closed his eyes. The images of Lo’s body being torn apart by the vampires flashed through his mind. Their blood spilling out onto the ground. More images of Lo being pinned down and violated- drained of blood against their will while Solomon stood by, helpless to do anything. And then images of himself- capturing Lo that first night in the forest, keeping them tied up and drugged, leading them like a lamb to the slaughter to his camp of hungry vampires.

Lo rose higher on their knees and leaned in, pressing their forehead to the vampire’s, their breath warm and steady against his face. Solomon choked back a sob. They didn’t want to hurt Lo- never again.

“Please.” They whispered, before gently guiding his head to the side of their neck, Solomon shuddered out another breath. “It’s okay-” Lo whispered. “Sol I- I forgive you. Now eat, please.”

There was a cry and a strangled sob as Solomon wrapped a shaking hand around Lo’s waist, pulling them closer to him in the water. And then the most gentle bite into their neck- so soft that Lo barely let out a gasp as his fangs slid into their flesh.

Solomon began to drink as he pulled the human closer into him, his arm curving around their waist, the other reaching up to cradle their head. Lo settled onto his lap underneath the water, their thighs tightening against the vampire’s hips, Lo’s chest pressing into his. Warm skin against warm skin.

Tears leaked from Solomon’s eyes as he continued to drink, holding the human closer as the light grew dark- the moon and stars peeking out through the budding night sky.

Lo let out a sigh, their body relaxing as they began to feel limp and they slumped forward in the vampire’s embrace as he held them tighter and continued to drink- hopefully until he got his fill of as much blood as he needed.

When the vampire pulled away, satisfied with his meal, Lo briefly found the strength to lift their head and smile, before passing out backwards into the water behind them.

Solomon quickly scooped the human up out of the water, pressing their naked body into his as he rose, climbing out of the creek. He collected their trap in one hand, holding the small human against him with the other, and carefully lifted them against his body, straddling their legs across his hips, his other arm bracing across their back for support as he began to carry them back to their cave, leaving both of their clothes behind on the rocks. He could come back for those later.

Once he reached their encampment inside the cave he realized how cold the human was- and quickly laid them down amongst the blankets, bundling them up gently before he started the fire.

Sol threw on his extra change of clothes, and set a pot out to boil, using part of it to make tea, and the other to boil the crawdads like Lo had showed him.

He had eaten his fill, so it’d only be fair for Lo to have a nice meal waiting for them once they woke up.

I can't believe I reached 3k followers!!! Thank you all so much!! When I started this blog, I hoped to reach 100 followers one day, and now here we are!

So to thank you all and mark the date, I'm making a little event! The theme is simple : movies!

What is it all about?

Under the cut are a list of prompts and scenes from different movies. You can choose between two different things that you would like me to write:

- You can choose between 1 and 5 prompts along with a character and I will write a one-shot based on these prompts for the character you have chosen

- You can choose one scene in the list and a character, and I will re-write that scene for the character you have chosen

A few rules to follow if you want to send a request.

- If you request for the prompts :

- You can request up to 5 prompts, not more

- You can add a few details that you would like to be featured in your request if you have precise ideas

- If you request a scene :

- I will write a one-shot that is inspired by that scene, not the exact same scene (obviously, otherwise, where is the fun?). The idea is to get the same spirit and some references, or the same situation, but not a simple copy.

- These scenes will require me to turn AU!, so don't be surprised.

- You can request only one scene, so choose wisely ;)

- I will most likely 'erase' the characters who were in the original scenes, so don't be surprised.

No matter if you request for prompts or for a scene :

- You can request for any character on my masterlist, no matter if I've already written for them or not.

- I have no trouble with anons, if you're a little shy. So don't hesitate to send a request on anon if you feel more comfortable this way.

- Please, send me your request through my askbox and not in a PM. It's much easier for me to manage, and I might forget about your request if you send it to me privately. If you're shy, send an ask on anon.

- Sadly, I will probably not be able to write all the requests that are sent my way. I will write as many as I can, but I'm only human. I'm sorry if I don't get to write your request. But I invite you to send it anyway, because I might write your request! If you don't send it, then you can be sure that I won't though. Again, I'm sorry if I can't write all the requests I receive, but I usually get too many to be able to write them all.

Requests for this event will be up for one week, which means until January 14!

Considering how well this event works, I may change that date along the way.

Ad Astra

Sad Astra. Sad Astronaut. Brad Astra. Dad Astra. Sad Brad Dad Astronaut movie.

Now that’s out of the way, let’s talk about Ad Astra.

Roy (Pitt), all-around talented guy, gets launched into space by a near-future version of NASA following the spectacular wreck of what could very well have been this era’s biggest antenna. His mission: get in touch with his father he thought long since lost in space (Tommy Lee Jones), now possibly orbiting somewhere around Neptune.

The casting of Jones in a space movie, no less alongside fellow Space Cowboy Donald Sutherland, is a little distracting at the outset for those with the misfortune of recalling that movie. That’s too without going into just how Agent K feels about all this.

More distracting still is the treatment of Liv Tyler who gets even less to do than when she was waiting on Ben Affleck hurtling back to earth. Casting approach aside, there’s very little about the technical or storytelling skill that isn’t about as good as you’ll get from any 2019 mainstream release.

This author hopefully opined in years past for a narrative akin to Director James Gray’s most excellent The Lost City of Z set in space. Having now so accomplished this, it’s clear the Director’s penchant for large-scale, epic storytelling (importantly two different things) is not limited to the jungle.

Star Trek’s ‘final frontier’ line being one spoken nay lightly, Ad Astra captures the sense of wonder inherent to the exploration beyond our stratosphere whether it be those first plucky missions or the ones on which we are thrilled to speculate. There’s a sense of the great beyond and wide open as we here ascend, or more accurately descend into the sky via these rocket-ships and Pitt’s own mournful gaze.

Comparisons to Apocalypse Now will be apparent, what with Roy hurtling further into chaos on an unknown mission and even insisting that a crew not investigate a wandering ship given his unstated priority. Ad Astra is however more akin to Heart of Darkness itself given how our spaceman’s internal monologue so shapes our spiral and Roy’s own toward he imbued as a near mythical figure.

Complemented by some stunning cinematography and recreations of space, the opening frames as Roy plummets down the largest earth-bound building we’ve ever seen is spectacular to behold on a big screen. Indulging in some excellent world (and moon) building, the depiction of our orbiting sphere as a Disneyland-esque high-priced tourist trap is a tranche of this film we could just as well have spent a great deal more time in.

The final act, relatable and powerful for being in respects both counterintuitive and anticlimactic, thrives in the colourful depiction of a section of our Solar System ill-explored in film and best experienced on as large a stage as possible. The film too featuring an entertaining docking sequence, it is the one instance in which Ad Astra does not exceed Interstellar’s here familiar attempts at conveying the wonder of far-reaching space exploration; that film’s own docking sequence, amid not much to write home about, still emerging triumphant against it’s like.

An inscrutable figure to be sure, Pitt manages much more with a glance or glimmer than most of his contemporary A-listers, and anyone who likewise hoped for something greater with the not dissimilar approach in First Man will find Ad Astra that much more rewarding.

Compounding itself with some excellent set design (at times eerily reminiscent of Blade Runner 2049), Ad Astra boasts probably the best jump scare of the year, just for being at once novel, sensical and in our first few minutes on one particular space ship coming far from where we’d expect. This moment’s symbolic dimensions too evident, once one has recovered they’re a joy to unpack.

A few minor gripes aside, namely an unnecessary action sequence replete with, of course, guns on the moon and one character’s motivation to help Roy being hurriedly and none too convincingly expounded, Ad Astra delivers.

759. [MOV] Star Trek Into Darkness

The Enterprise, in surveying the planet Nibiru, has discovered that a volcano is due to erupt that will likely wipe out most life on the planet, Yellowstone caldera style. There is a primitive village at the base of the volcano, and Kirk lures them away from the initial blast zone by stealing one of their sacred scrolls, causing them all to chase him and McCoy until they jump off a cliff and swim to the Enterprise, stupidly hidden underwater. Meanwhile, Sulu, Uhura and Spock are flying inside the caldera to lower Spock down on a line to deploy a device that will freeze the eruption in its tracks. The ash intake is damaging the shuttle's engines and when Spock's tether accidentally severs, Sulu is forced to leave him behind on a small rock surrounded by lava or the shuttle will crash. The only way to get Spock out of there is with a direct line of sight transport, but they'd need to come out of the ocean to do that, exposing the ship to the view of the natives and violating the Prime Directive. Spock tells them to leave him behind, but Kirk ignores his protest and does it anyway, beaming Spock aboard just before the bomb goes off and freezes the eruption. He shrugs off the Prime Directive implications even as the natives begin drawing silhouettes of the Enterprise in the sand.

Back at Earth, Kirk and Spock have been called to report to Admiral Pike, who asks about the Nibiru survey mission. Kirk calls it uneventful, which doesn't mesh with the report Spock filed regarding their violation of the Prime Directive. Kirk is angry that Spock went behind his back to tell on him for saving his life, and Pike dismisses Spock from the room to dress Kirk down for filing a false report, violating the Prime Directive, and furthermore failing to even understand what he did wrong. He says that there was already a hearing convened and they've decided to strip Kirk of his command and boot him all the way down to cadet.

Pike finds Kirk at a bar and cockblocks him to share a drink. He tells Kirk that they gave the Enterprise back to him, and he was able to lessen Kirk's punishment. He'll serve as Pike's first officer with Spock transferred to the Bradbury. They're called in to an emergency meeting at Starfleet Headquarters, where Admiral "Robocop" Marcus informs them he got an email from Mickey before he 9-11'd Section 31 that he was coerced into doing it by Michaelvick Dogfightmatch. Admiral Marcus is declaring a manhunt for the dude, but it doesn't add up to Kirk, especially because he doesn't know it was a Section 31 facility and on its face appears to just be a library. He realizes that once said terror attack would happen, all the captains and first officers would convene in this very room.

Sure enough, Obamadict Cumbarack shows up in a small craft to Godfather 3 the room, killing pretty much everyone except Marcus, Spock and Kirk. Pike gets hit in the chest and Spock melds with him as he passes. Kirk ties a rifle to a wall-mounted firehose and throws it through a broken window into the engine of the shuttle, crippling it. He sees Wimbledon Tennismatch beam out as his craft breaks apart around him. Scotty is able to locate the transwarp beaming device he had aboard and has found its coordinates: "Not Khan" beamed himself to Qo'noS, the one place they can't go.

Kirk requests Marcus reinstate him as Captain of the Enterprise and reassign Spock back as his first officer so he can enter Klingon space and pursue Frumious Bandersnatch to bring him to justice. Marcus grants him his request with specific orders. He'll arm the Enterprise with experimental torpedoes that can be fired from long range and will be undetectable by the Klingons. They'll warp in to the edge of Klingon space and fire on Buttonwillow McKittrick's location. Along with the torpedoes comes a weapons expert, Dr. Carol Wallace, which everyone going into the film already knew was actually Carol Marcus, but the filmmakers sure know how to insult their fans by pretending they pulled one over on them. Spock is also suspicious of her and looks into it. Scotty has a serious problem allowing the torpedoes on board because he doesn't know their composition or how they might interfere with the Enterprise engines, and when Kirk orders him to approve them despite his objections, he resigns. Kirk assigns Chekov to replace him as Chief Engineer, saying "Go put on a red shirt," which is a little less funny now considering Anton Yelchin died shortly after filming Star Trek Beyond.

Before Scotty leaves the Enterprise, he implores Kirk not to use the torpedoes, advice that Kirk takes to heart. As they warp to Qo'noS, he announces that they will be seeking to arrest "John Harrison" and only use the torpedoes as a last resort. Spock discovers that Carol Wallace is Carol Marcus, the daughter of Admiral Marcus, and she forged her transfer papers to get aboard. Before she can explain what she's doing here, the Enterprise violently drops out of warp in the Klingon neutral zone due to a coolant leak Chekov discovers. Kirk, Spock, Uhura and two redshirts take a ship confiscated from Harry Mudd and dress in civilian clothes so as not to tie their mission to Starfleet, while Sulu is given the conn and sends a transmission to "Khan't" warning him to surrender or get BTFO. Chekov will try to get the engines up and running before they return.

It looks like the Klingons overmined Praxis a little earlier in this timeline, as Qo'noS has a moon that's breaking apart. The transporter coordinates lead to an uninhabited section of Qo'noS, and en route to its location, Uhura decides to start up an argument with Spock over his rash actions on Nibiru, his seeming lack of care for her feelings when he chose to die, and she tries to bring Kirk into the argument. Spock counters that he's felt grief and despair before, when he melded with Pike, and knew it was the same feeling he felt magnified when Vulcan died, and so he chooses not to feel it again, but it does not affect his feelings for Uhura.

Even though it's an abandoned area of Qo'noS, they have the luck to encounter a random patrol and despite putting on a good chase are completely surrounded. Kirk is ready for a fight, but Uhura opts to use her Klingon to attempt to negotiate instead. She meets face to face with the patrol leader and tells him they are here to hunt down a human criminal with no honor. The Klingon is not moved by her calls to his sensibility, and begins throttling her. But of course, Trenchadict Matrixbatch shows up in a long coat and a bunch of guns to blow up the Klingons. Once the patrol is eradicated, he demands to know the number of torpedoes the Enterprise is armed with. Spock says they have 72, and "Harrison" immediately surrenders. Kirk accepts his surrender, then punches him a bunch. It doesn't seem to phase his prisoner one bit.

On the Enterprise brig, "Harrison" notes they haven't gone to warp yet, suggesting he suspects sabotage. He gives Kirk coordinates to investigate, saying there will be answers to his war on Starfleet there, and he suggests they open a torpedo to see what's inside. Spock warns that he's trying to get into Kirk's head, but Kirk listens anyway because something doesn't add up. He calls Scotty back on Earth and asks him to do him a favor and investigate the coordinates, which take Scotty to a secret shipyard orbiting Jupiter. Speaking with Carol Marcus, she explains that she forged her credentials because she had full access to Section 31's weapons programs except for these torpedoes which disappeared off the books, and she wanted to investigate. They take the ship to a nearby planetoid where Doctors McCoy and Marcus perform surgery on a torpedo and discover it's housing a cryotube with a 300-year-old man inside.

Kirk returns to the brig to find out what's going on, where Bunchacrunch Creamsicle hams it up to reveal that his name... is... KHAN. As if that means anything to Kirk, but maybe Khan was playing it up for the fourth wall. I should point out that Khan was previously played by a Mexican actor portraying an Indian man and now he's suddenly Whitey McLondon. The only thing I can think is that in this timeline, Khan, being of South Asian descent, was likely engineered with the British colonialism gene, turning him into the Englishest Englishman who ever Britted. He explains that Admiral Marcus has a goal of a militarized Starfleet, particularly after the Narada incident, and went and found the Botany Bay to get insight from genetic augments on building new weapons and ships. He held Khan's crew hostage to force him to do the work. Khan hid his crew's cryotubes in the torpedoes he was developing, but apparently Marcus found them. Khan assumed they had been killed, which is why he started waging war on Starfleet. He believes Marcus sabotaged the Enterprise so that it would be found when it launched the torpedoes, sparking a war against the Klingons that Marcus wants.

Proving his point, Admiral Marcus warps in on a big scary new Dreadnought-class vessel called the USS Vengeance. (Who calls it that? The script, apparently. It's never mentioned in the film.) Marcus and Kirk briefly pretend like they don't know that the other person knows that they know, but Khan was pretty much right. Marcus demands Khan be killed and asks him handed over. Kirk lies and says their transporters are down, and then tells Marcus Khan is in Engineering and they'll lower shields to let the Vengeance beam him over. He's really just buying time to make sure that Chekov has warp back online. Shields are never dropped, and they warp back to Earth.

Kirk figures they're safe, doubting the Vengeance can catch up to them, but Carol says the Vengeance has an advanced warp drive and will definitely catch up to them, which it does, firing weapons on the Enterprise and knocking it out of warp in orbit of the Moon. Marcus beams Carol over to the Vengeance and declares the Enterprise crew in league with Khan. He'll execute them all as traitors, even as Kirk begs to be solely held responsible. But before the Vengeance can fire again, all systems reboot. Scotty snuck aboard the Vengeance when he found it in the Jupiter shipyard, and is actively sabotaging it as he can.

Since it will take some time for the Vengeance to restore systems, Kirk sees an opportunity despite the Enterprise's own weapons being offline. Khan knows the Vengeance inside and out, being one of its developers. They turn the ship to align with a cargo bay airlock port on the Vengeance, and Kirk and Khan launch themselves out of an Enterprise airlock in EVA suits to traverse the gap in space. Scotty is accosted by a security officer while manning the airlock port and tries to stall for time, apologizing to him right before he opens the airlock and the guard is blown out into space as Kirk and Khan fly in. Kirk gives Khan a phaser locked to stun, and they head for the bridge.

Spock, meanwhile, gives his old buddy Spock Prime a call and asks him about Khan. Spock Prime warns him that Khan Noonien Singh was one of their most formidable foes and was only defeated at great cost. This scene really didn't need to be in here as it added nothing other than giving Spock Prime another scene when we got a wonderful sendoff for him last film. We all already know Khan is bad, he's the bad guy in the trailers. And since this situation is completely different from Wrath of Khan other than Khan is the bad guy, any advice Spock Prime gives is going to be generic at best and ultimately no payoff comes from it other than to remind people about Wrath of Khan, a much better movie.

Kirk also doesn't trust Khan and tells Scotty to drop him as soon as they hit the bridge. They take the bridge and Scotty stuns Khan, but his superior genetics let him shrug off the stun early and he starts kicking everyone's ass before going full Mountain vs Oberyn, crushing Admiral Marcus's skull between his bare hands. He demands Spock beam the torpedoes to the Vengeance, pointing out that if he doesn't comply, he'll just knock out their life support system since his crew will be unaffected in their cryotubes. Spock beams them over and beams back Kirk, Scotty and Carol. Khan resumes firing on the Enterprise anyway, but Spock had set the torpedoes for timed detonation, and the Vengeance gets fucked up. Kirk worries that they killed Khan's crew, but they removed the tubes beforehand and have them stored in sickbay.

But the damage the Enterprise suffered causes main power to go down and despite it being in orbit of the Moon five minutes ago it starts falling into the Earth's atmosphere. Kirk and Scotty head to Engineering in an Inception-inspired gravity tumbling scene. They can't reinitialize the warp core because an injector is misaligned, and there's no time to clear the chamber of radiation to fix it. Gee, that sounds a little familiar. Kirk is going to go in to do it anyway, and knocks Scotty out to stop his protestations. He manages to kick the injector back in place, and the ship restores power, rising out of the clouds.

In the most offensively derivative scene, Scotty calls Spock down to Engineering as they steal half the lines from Wrath of Khan while Spock and Kirk have a tearful conversation through a pane of glass. Kirk succumbs to his radiation exposure and dies. But, c'mon, we know it's not going to take, because Kirk's only weakness is shoddy bridge construction. Spock, in sadness and anger, yells "KHAAAAAN!" and I, in anger, yell "ABRAAAMS!!!!"

This brings me to a recurring point of contention with the JJverse films. There are plenty of human characters with emotions in these movies that don't cry, yet the stoic Spock has to be made compelling once a film by turning into a blubbering mess. Look, we get it, we all saw "The Naked Time" (or I did) and remembered him crying that he couldn't confess his love for his mother. It was a great moment. And it was made possible because he was intoxicated, not because he was in an emotional situation, and it was an incredibly rare moment in the series. Spock can be somber without resorting to tears. To be clear, I am not hating on characters crying in movies. I think that is perfectly fine. I am hating on the choice to rob Spock of his primary characteristic every movie to service lazy storytelling.

Khan and the Vengeance are not quite dead yet, and he decides to take his ship on a collision course for San Fransisco, first smashing into Alcatraz (what is this, a Roland Emmerich film?) then colliding with several skyscrapers. Khan survives this crash. They can't beam Khan up, but they can beam Spock down, who chases Khan through the panicked streets of San Fran, ending up on a flying car-top battle. Meanwhile, McCoy discovers that Khan's blood injected into a dead tribble restored it to life, and realizes that death no longer holds meaning in the Star Trek universe because they can just harvest Khan's platelets forever. Uhura beams down to stop Spock from killing Khan (though, as just established, wouldn't his superblood prevent that anyway?) and Spock just delivers a no-holds-barred beatdown instead.

Kirk wakes up in the hospital a few weeks later, neutering his heroic sacrifice for the Enterprise. Khan has been stuck back in a cryotube with the rest of the Botany Bay crew. A year passes and San Franscisco and the Enterprise have been fixed up. Kirk gives a speech about not letting enemies of the Federation pull Starfleet into militarization and they should focus instead on exploration. Boy, that sure would have been a nice message to tell Paramount at the start of this project. The crew boards the Enterprise and prepares to embark on a 5-year deep space mission. About time. It's only taken them two movies to get to a point where they can do the movies they should have been doing all along.

NITPICKS

Hey you know what would be better than lowering yourself into an active volcano to place a suitcase bomb then waiting for a starship to leave an ocean and expose itself to the natives so it can line-of-sight beam you? Staying in fucking orbit where nobody can see you and beaming the suitcase bomb down.

They could have called that bomb anything. They chose to call it a cold fusion bomb. That is not at all what cold fusion means.

What really bugs me about the violation of the Prime Directive is that Kirk never actually learns his lesson. He's only thrust back into the captain's chair out of necessity. At no point does he express regret for how he handled the Nibiru mission, nor does he even seem to comprehend the purpose of Starfleet's number 1 rule.

They make a big deal about giving Sulu the bridge like it's never happened. Sulu has, in fact, commanded the Enterprise before, last film, when Kirk and Spock were aboard the Narada.

The on-screen text identifies the Klingon homeworld as Kronos. It is, in fact, Qo'noS.

The Enterprise is in orbit of the Moon when it starts to careen towards the Earth. A quarter million miles is, in fact, pretty dang far, and the Moon would have had the stronger local gravity well.

Between two cuts of Kirk and Spock's hands against the window, in the first cut they are both making the Vulcan salute, and the next they are both holding their hands normally, with no transition out of said salute.

Why didn't McCoy test the blood of any of the other 72 augments to see if maybe they had the same magical superblood? They might not have needed Khan at all.

Spock: Had the mission had gone according to plan, Admiral, the indigenous species would never have been aware of our interference. Pike: That's a technicality. Spock: I am Vulcan, sir. We embrace technicality. Pike: Are you giving me attitude, Spock? Spock: I am expressing multiple attitudes simultaneously, sir.

Kirk: Why the archive? All that information is public record, and if he really wanted to damage Starfleet, this could just be the beginning. Marcus: The beginning of what, Mister Kirk? Kirk: Sir, in the event of an attack, protocol mandates that senior command gather captains and first officers at Starfleet HQ, right here. In this room.

Spock: Regulations aside, this action is morally wrong. Kirk: Regulations aside, pulling your ass out of a volcano was morally right. And I didn't win any points for that.

Kirk: We have our orders, Scotty. Scott: That's what scares me. This is clearly a military operation. ls that what we are now? Because I thought we were explorers.

Kirk: Are you guys fighting? Uhura: I'd rather not talk about it, sir. Kirk: Oh, my God. What is that even like?

Kirk: This isn't going to be a problem, is it, you two working together? Uhura: Absolutely not. Spock: Unclear.

McCoy: You just sat that man down at a high stakes poker game with no cards and told him to bluff. Now Sulu's a good man, but he is no captain. Kirk: For the next two hours, he is. And enough with the metaphors, all right? That's an order.

Uhura: At that volcano, you didn't give a thought to us. What it would do to me if you died, Spock. You didn't feel anything. You didn't care. And I'm not the only one who's upset with you. The Captain is too. Kirk: No. No, no. Don't drag me into this. ...She is right.

Spock: It is true I chose not to feel anything upon realizing that my own life was ending. As Admiral Pike was dying, I joined with his consciousness and experienced what he felt at the moment of his passing. Anger. Confusion. Loneliness. Fear. I had experienced those feelings before, multiplied exponentially on the day my planet was destroyed. Such a feeling is something I choose never to experience again. Nyota, you mistake my choice not to feel as a reflection of my not caring. Well, I assure you, the truth is precisely the opposite.

McCoy: You know, when I dreamt about being stuck on a deserted planet with a gorgeous woman, there was no torpedo.

Khan: Intellect alone is useless in a fight, Mister Spock. You, you can't even break a rule. How would you be expected to break bone?

Kirk: I'm not aligning with him, I'm using him. The enemy of my enemy is my friend. Spock: An Arabic proverb attributed to a prince who was betrayed and decapitated by his own subjects.

BDP-S5500 là đầu đĩa Blu-ray tầm trung mới nhất của Sony. Đây là một trong những dòng đầu đĩa mạnh bao gồm BDP-S6500 (khoảng 5 triệu đồng), BDP-S3500 (khoảng 3 triệu), và dòng mới công bố BDP-S1500 (khoảng 2,5 triệu đồng).

Mặc dù BDP-S5500 không tích hợp cho quy mô 4K như trên S6500, nhưng nó cung cấp một loạt các ứng dụng trực tuyến đáp ứng mọi nhu cầu giải trí cho bất cứ gian phòng nào trong nhà bạn.

Thiết kế và kết nối

Xu hướng thiết kế đầu đĩa gọn nhẹ, hiệu năng sử dụng hiệu quả đã được S5500 vận dụng tối đa. Với kích thước chiều ngang chỉ 230mm và cao chỉ 39mm, S5500 thật sự là một thiết bị lý tưởng cho không gian nhà bạn.

Sony khá tinh tế trong việc loại bỏ góc cạnh thiết kế “Sense of Quartz” của dòng đầu đĩa năm ngoái. Thay vào đó, Sony hướng tới sự đơn giản gồm các đường thẳng – lấy cảm hứng từ “dạng hình học thuần túy”- và một góc màu đen cạnh bộ AV. Tải đĩa Blu-ray cũng khá nhanh chóng – nhưng phải mất 30 giây để bắt đầu chơi riêng 2 đĩa Terminator Salvation của Sony và The Amazing Spider-Man, trong khi cả Thor: The Dark World và Star Trek chỉ mất khoảng 15 giây.

Chất lượng hình ảnh thật tuyệt vời. Hình ảnh sống động chân thực nhờ vào độ tương phản cao, chi tiết sắc nét, phong phú, màu sắc tự nhiên.

Chúng tôi đã thử nghiệm đọc đĩa DVD trên S5500 với Star Wars phát hành năm 2006 , và chúng tôi thực sự ấn tượng với những hình ảnh sắc nét đến tuyệt mỹ. Góc cạnh được xác định rõ ràng, tiếng ồn được tái tạo một cách chuyên nghiệp, và nội thất của các Cruiser Star Imperial chi tiết đến ngạc nhiên.
