After several tries, here’s a good close-up view of this Victorian to Edwardian era mourning jewelry from the late 1800’s to very early 1900’s. Commonly worn after the deaths of close family members, this type of jewelry was usually set with onyx, obsidian, black glass or jet stones. The blank portrait area on the pendant is the aspect I find most ominous. So very glad that this morbid tradition…

Well, I gave up on finding decent modern replicas, and I just I bought a beautiful black blouse from the actual 1890s on Etsy, and was able to score an actual mourning hat circa 1870-1890s at half price discount. I’ll just use a vintage black skirt I have that suits the silhouette of the 1890s fairly well to complete it. I really wanted to purchase a custom skirt from a lady who makes Victorian and Edwardian pattern skirts with trains and large pleats but unfortunately she lives in the UK and shipping on time wasn’t a guarantee. It’ll be more of a working class mourning widow look. Hopefully I can find a black veil I like and some gloves in the next couple of weeks. I’m trying to space out my purchases because actual attire and accessories from that period are so expensive and I used klarna to pay for the blouse and hat. Anyway, I’m sort of excited about it.

Having tired of dealing with a fixer-upper in the Sierra Nevada foothills, Arvin Lebec has moved to a contemporary loft condo in San Francisco's Mission Bay. As a cost-saving measure in the go-go early 2000s, it was constructed without windows.

This was an impulse, and I really like it. The smoking roosters are the creation of an artist I encountered at the Ybor City Saturday Market two years ago. They add that contemporary urban vibe.

The kitchen unit is from Dolls House Emporium, and I salivated over it for about 20 years before buying it. The table is a cupcake stand from defunct and much-mourned A.C. Moore, the greatest of craft stores. The two plastic chairs are from a little vintage toy shop on City Island, as is the chair Arvin is sitting in. His sofa is back stock from the going-out-of-business sale of the A.C. Moore in Middletown, CT. The old-school sound system was on the 25-cent table at Earth & Tree Miniatures.

The bed is from long-defunct Bearly Big Enough in Stockton; I think we got it from a different local shop who bought up BBE's stock before going belly-up itself. The little nightstand was a gift from a friend back East that I need to track down on social media because she was awesome and I miss her. The fancy chest is one I painted up for Mom's version of the Gray Mansard, using an unfinished chest from Auntie Em's in Arizona. The tansu is from Mom's collection and is a welcome find, as I apparently lost mine (or I gave Mom this one).

The bath set is just one Mom had among her millions. I like it because it's not porcelain. Unseen is the apartment-sized W/D set, which is the one I decided to keep. The cow rug is something I found at a gift shop in Arizona -- possibly the big one as you first get to Wickenburg, but this kind of thing was so common there that I'm not sure.

So I can play around with scrap paper wall coverings and accessories with impunity. The one must-do task, when I bring the sewing machine out, is to make that bed a mattress, since its original one has vanished.

I'm actually a week or two late with this gift - you guys were too quick! Thank you so so much for all the love and interest in my CC. I know I keep repeating it after every milestone, but all that positive energy coming from you is a major motivating factor. Take this cape, for example - my goodness, what an annoying project! I've been working on it for weeks and hadn't it been for you, I would've most probably ditched it. But I wanted badly to make something special for you, to thank you for all the support - so I went on, fighting with the weights and... Here it is. A vintage accessory cape.

Is it perfect? Nope. It doesn't look as good as the girls' cape, mostly because of women having the audacity to grow boobs. There is some clipping involved, even while eg. eating. Still, I think it ended up looking quite nice and works as good as it gets. Hope you'll agree :).

I did my best to make it compatible with a number of Victorian dresses I use in my game: by Linzlu, RetroPixels, Elfdor and even myself. A lot depends on your sim's breast size, but if you don't go too crazy in that area, it will work just fine. With non-puffy dresses you should be completely on the safe side. However, keep in mind that it won't work with any outfit having 'high' shoulders!

Bring a tape measure. There’s a mundane reason for this, that vintage sizes are wonky, but the real reason is because it’s accessible to both you and, um, others. You can see it, so if it begins stretching, or suddenly tears without cause, or the numbers suddenly fade, than it’s not for you. I don’t care how cute is. Or how nice you think it’ll fit. Leave it.

“Others” is a loose term I use for the various lurking entities that might be attached to an old garment/accessory you’re considering or building you’re in - the previous owner(s), the seamstress, the pattern maker, the fabric maker, past employees, and more. If you’re in a hundred year old building or trying on 70 year old dress, odds are pretty good the original owner or at the very least someone involved in its creation is dead. The odds are much, much lower that they care about you or the thing, but not zero.

If you start hearing voices or old music when you touch something, leave it. If you are wearing an item and this happens, follow the instructions and/or honor the context. 3a. If you are you are wearing a letterman jacket and you hear cheering crowds, find something to throw (that won’t break). I suggest your wallet-probably sturdy, maybe zipped up, and easy to reclaim.
