Story, old as time
This is a story you might have heard:
Once upon a time, there were People. They shared the same beliefes and langauge and history. They used to call each other kin. They had stories about how the world was created and who did it and what is their purpose in it. They have stories that started with "once upon a time our ancestors, who lived in (this village), did-". People who had relationship with the Land itself - in which the ground wasn't belonged to the people, but the people belonged to the land. That had names for the ground, the dirt, that reffered to that connection. People who used to celebrate the passing of time. That had stories of plants and animals that are related to a certain area. People who were centered around a place of worship, or a few. People that had different subgroups, each with their own territory, that still recognized each other as similar. People who lived in many (villages, farms, cities). There were People, who shared names and traditions and food and laws and routins in life. Who lived and died, constructed and de-constructed families in similar ways. That celebrated growth and puberty and coming-of-age and birth and-
Does it sound any familiar?
We had a name for ourselves, that had a meaning that translated to something that unite us (people). They gave us another name, which is the name people now call us. Maybe we also use it when talking to Outsiders. It's a name that's related to a word in their langauge, or the way they call the place we come from. We were forced to leave our homes, our graves, our sacred places. We were murdered and killed. Our culture and faith and history and names and clothes were laughed at. Our look and traditions and langauge got made them call us Ugly, dirty, sinful, evil. We were torn apart and forced to build their empire. Our property and land were stolen, used to build their empire. [They never mention that.]
Tell me if you ever heard that story:
We still mourn the people who died. Our collective memory still holds the pain and horror of wathing our homes burnt and our families murdered. Of being enslaved and sold, over and over and over again. Of being considered uncivilised, wrong, dirty. Of our children being taken away. We remember our culture and belifes being laughed at at and prohibited - only to later be stollen, a cartoonish mockery of what we had. Of our faith and culture and history being sold by those who took them from us. We still remember our Holly places. We never forget. We still hold the old names of the places from which our ancestors came from. [Some of us still remember the names and the clothing and langauges. Some have even those stolen away.]
This is a short story we'll never stop to tell:
We used to live here, but one day They came. [We suffer. We survive. We (will) return Home]
