Melbourne has Lord of the fries and Lune Croissantarie and Yo-Chi and Green Cup.

I had the most amazing Lobster Ravioli (that I obviously don’t eat anymore) while living in Melbourne and I tried so many different types of fish I had never even heard of before.

Baked in Portsea has the bestest yummiest pastries and what not if you’re ever in the Mornington Peninsula. The things I’d give for their Hummus & Feta sandwich (in a very German multi seed bread roll). Also got this amazing Birthday cake!!!!

Sydney had yummy yummy Everything Bagel with Garlic Cream Cheese from Brooklyn Bros Bagel and the Peanut Butter Bar & Fishbowl.

There’s Cadbury Mini Eggs in Aus, and Chiobani and obviously TimTams although I find them too sweet these days. Had my first spider (not that good) and a very yummy spider (raspberry lemonade with vanilla ice cream). Schweppes Agrum!!!!!! I fell in love with these veggie things from Coles and whatever that thing on the right actually is (that I also wouldn’t eat anymore).

I did lots of awesome things in Oz with the limited time I had thanks to Corona but I swam with Dolphins in the ocean in Sorrento, I fell in love with my library in Sydney, I went to the amazing Cinderella exhibit at the Grounds of Alexandria, I biked down a mountain in Tassie with 50km/h, I took the ferry in Sydney a million times as one does, I’ve been on a 40 million dollar yacht (still the most surreal day of my life to this day 🥴)

Day 1: 11 Mar 2024

Because we are both now retirees, we decided to drive to the Mornington Peninsula to meet the Worths instead of flying to Melbourne and then hiring a car. So we’ll drive down via the coast on the Princes Highway and then return via the inland road. We’ll have 3 nights of accommodation before meeting Paul and Sharon on Thursday 14/3.

Initially we also planned to take the gravel bikes with us but after Phil’s diagnosis of “shingles” a couple of weeks ago and the doctor’s order to “take it easy” we decided to leave the bikes behind. Best not to have the temptation!

Carlyles are not well known for their early starts so we left the driveway at Elanora at 7:45am with a coffee stop planned once we were past Wollongong. Gerringong was where we found ourselves for a pretty good coffee and little orange polenta cake. The cafe had big views over the coast. It’s a cute surfer township with the stunning Gerroa beach next door.

Next stop for a toastie for lunch was Mollymook … another beautiful South Coast town. We got takeaway toasties and sat down near the beach. Pretty warm with 30C showing on the temperature gauge.

Jim lent us a 12V fridge which we’ve plugged in and it works a treat. It’s cooking for us 2 x milk, yoghurt, tonight’s frozen dinner (cooked at home yesterday), a bottle of wine, and 1 beer. Tonight’s AirBnB has no kitchen apart from a microwave and it’s in North Durass which is a good 20+ min drive to Bateman’s Bay which is the closest place for dinner options. Hence our homemade dinner! Perfect!

We arrived at our destination at 2:30pm and met Victor (our host). Great place with walks, mountain biking, beaches, lakes etc all on the doorstep. Our accommodation is a granny flat at the back of Victor and Dee’s house. Two kangaroos (mum and 1 year old Joey) were chomping away on grass right outside our door.

We put walking shoes on straight away and did a short walk along the lake. Huge trees! This area was impacted badly in 2019/20 during those terrible bushfires. The bush looks like it has fully recovered. Pretty stunning area. Glad we stopped here.

The 7th Melbourne Queer Games Festival announced their Award Winners for 2024 last night.

Connecting international and Australian game developers to queer culture the lo-fi festival had 74 games on show this year.

Game developers can opt-in to have their games judged as part of the festival.

The focus of the judging is to create discussion about the works more than to rank queer art.

“We get games from all letters of the rainbow and are proud of that kind of inclusivity,” Luke Miller from MQGF said,

The jury’s shortlist of 25 queer games they loved was released online with the award winners announced via e-mail last night.

Trip number one of this year? Racing the Tour Divide. I did my first long-distance bicycle tour in 2016 when I cycled across the Australian Outback from Melbourne to Darwin by way of Adelaide. It was boring. But it was also an awesome experience, an incredible way to see the country, and it made me some life-long friends (hi, friends!); that said, I wouldn’t want to repeat that trip (or necessarily recommend it). My second trip via bicycle was bikepacking the Arizona Trail. This was my first time on a mountain bike and it was a hell of a lot different from my trip across Australia (except for the whole bicycling through the desert part). Single track, technical trail, hike a bikes, and that small yet noteworthy part where I had to carry my bike across the Grand Canyon (would not recommend). Bike-powered trip number three? The Great Divide Mountain Bike Route by way of the Tour Divide. The short of it? It’s a 2,700ish-mile (4,200 km) bikepacking route from Banff, Alberta, to Antelope Wells, New Mexico, at the US-Mexico border. It follows the Continental Divide but has very little overlap with the Continental Divide Trail; however, they run nearly parallel for most of the route (as they both follow the Continental Divide, go figure). I remember meeting one Tour Divide rider when I hiked the Continental Divide Trail in 2017 in Island Park, Idaho (not officially on the CDT but instead on an alternate). He was stoked to see us, but I had no idea what he was doing or why I should be excited to see him. I apologize, stranger; if I could do it again, I would be stoked to see you (as I hope CDT hikers this year - and every year - will be stoked to see Tour Divide riders). What makes this trip different from my previous two? Well, a lot. But mostly that I’ll be attempting to complete the Tour Divide as quickly as possible (forgoing one of my favorite things about endurance outdoor activities - zero days).
