Day 3: Fes sightseeing – Ifran – Azrou – Midelt

The whole day is devoted to touring this UNESCO World Heritage City. Sightseeing of Fes includes the medieval Medina with its Attarine and Bou Anania Medersas, the Nejjarine fountain, the Moulay Idriss mausoleum, and the Karaouine mosque. Afternoon travelling via Azrou, where you can see Barbary apes in the forest of the Middle Atlas and then continue to your hotel in Midelt, the apple capital at the foot of the Ayachi Mountain.

Day 4: Midelt – Valley Ziz – Merzouga

Departure from Medilt at 9 o’clock to Merzouga desert. We will pass over the Tizi-n-Talremt pass and through the Ziz Valley, which is particularly well-known for its palm trees and the length of the oasis. All along the road, there are innumerable ksars, small villages of individual houses. From here we reach Er Rachidia and then Erfoud, famous for its date festival and fossils. Then continue to Merzouga, where you will meet your camel guide to ride into the dunes to the bivouac(camp). Dinner and overnight will be under the nomad tent. The trek will start right into the desert at 1:30. We will spend the night in an equipped camp in the middle of the Sahara desert. This is a great opportunity to take lovely pictures of the sunset and sunrise when you arrive at the camp you walk to the high dunes to see the sunset. It will be a magical night when the sky is clear of cover and stars sparkle and shine with intensity. There will be a wonderful dinner around a campfire, you will spend the night in a luxury camp in the desert. Hot shower & bathroom inside your own tent.

Day 5: Merzouga – Rissani – Todra Gorge – Dades Valley

In the morning after a hot shower and breakfast in a luxury camp in the desert, you will ride the camels back to Merzouga

. Today we will leave the desert toward Rissani where you can visit the souk (the biggest market in the area). Then continue to Tinghir and Todra Gorges, the highest, narrowest gorges in Morocco. After lunch in the heart of the gorge, we will drive through the Dades Valley, where you’ll see the majestic sand castles and the amazing rock formations known as “monkey toes”. Overnight accommodation will be in a fancy hotel overlooking the Dades Valley.

Day 6: Dades Valley – Ouarzazate – Marrakech

After breakfast, departure to Ouarzazate passing through the Dades Valley, the line of kasbahs that give this extremely popular route its nickname as a valley of a thousand kasbahs. Just before the town of Skoura, visit Kalaa Mgouna, the rose city, where you can purchase local rosewater. We will continue to Ouarzazate, “The Hollywood of Africa”. Go through the “Road of the thousand Kasbahs” – the fascinating “sandcastles”. After 30 kilometres from Ouarzazate, we will stop at the famous Kasbah Ait Benhaddou. The kasbah is one of the most intriguing red earth castles lining the ancient road of the Kasbahs and is a UNESCO world heritage site. Lunch by the Kasbah and continue on our way to Marrakesh through the famous Tizi-in-Tichka pass over the High Atlas Mountains. The range has snow on its peaks most of the year. Appreciate the beauty of the timeless landscapes on the twisted roads through Berber villages. After arriving in Marrakech you will be accommodated overnight in a hotel or riad.

Day 7: Marrakech sightseeing day

Marrakech is the second oldest imperial city, known as the pearl of the south. After breakfast, we visit the historical Marrakech: the Menara garden, the Saadian tombs, the Bahia Palace, the Koutoubia Minaret and the Majorelle Gardens named after the famous French painter, who constructed here his art deco villa and started the botanical gardens. In 1980 it became the residence of Yves Saint Laurent. Afternoon: visit the famous Djemaa El Fna square with its surrounding souks and handicraft quarters. In the evening check into your Riad.

Day 8: Marrakech – Casablanca

After breakfast is a transfer to Casablanca’s Mohammed V International airport for your return flight. End of our services.

Souvenirs d'hier, d'aujourd'hui et… de demain !

  Comme tout le monde le sait (JT obligent !), Sa Sainteté le Pape François était hier en visite officielle à Rabat. La seule mention du nom de la capitale du “ad-Dawla al-Maghribia ach-Charifa” (le Royaume chérifien au Couchant) réveille en moi 25 ans de souvenirs… et même plus : je suis profondément marqué par une double culture. J'ai donc passé les dernières 48 heures “scotché” devant mon grand petit écran, alors que je ne regarde la télévision que pour les journaux, ces tristes “JT” dont la partialité est exemplaire et la malhonnêteté décourageante. Mais, en blogueur consciencieux, je m'impose cette plongée quotidienne dans le marigot politiquement correct et la doxa gauche-caviar de nos stars surpayées…

  Les lecteurs habituels de ce Blog savent que ma sensibilité à tout ce qui touche le Maroc est au delà du rationnel. Quelques exemples ? Qui d'autre a remarqué que le Roi Mohammed VI a poussé la courtoisie jusqu'à aller accueillir le Pape à l'aérodrome de Rabat-Salé, assez loin de ce Palais Royal où il attend ses hôtes dans tous les autres cas ? Et qui, qu'il avait mis une djellaba jaune, à la couleur du Vatican ? Et quel chef d'Etat aurait osé offrir au monde le moment de pure beauté du sublime Ave Maria de Caccini, union de chants religieux de tradition musulmane, chrétienne et hébraïque mêlés dans une harmonie et avec  une intensité rarement vécues… Comme on était loin du Boléro de Ravel que Macron avait imposé aux chefs d'Etat du monde entier, le 11 novembre 2018 ! A chacun son audace !

  Cette belle manière m'a fait penser à l'attention de son père, mon ami Hassan II, qui avait fait défiler sa garde royale sur les Champs-Elysées aux sons d'une marche mêlant la Marseillaise et l'Hymne chérifien… Et aussi à son grand-père, le Sultan Mohammed Ben Youssef, futur Mohammed V, qui avait exprimé son soutien inconditionnel à la France contre l’Allemagne nazie dans un célèbre appel, le 3 septembre 1939, qui avait été lu dans toutes les mosquées du pays les jours suivants, entraînant ainsi l'engagement volontaire de plus de 85 000 Marocains dans l’armée française. C'est le même homme qui, après avoir été destitué et envoyé en exil en Corse et à Madagascar est revenu dans son pays en souverain indépendant et a repris son dialogue avec la France comme si de rien n'avait été.

  Ce n'est pas un secret pour les gens qui me connaissent que mon histoire personnelle avec la famille royale marocaine remonte à ma toute petite enfance. A une époque où le palais royal d'Ifrane, charmant lieu de villégiature du moyen-Atlas, n'avait pas encore été construit, nous passions nos vacances dans le même hôtel, et nous étions devenus des amis très proches, amitié qui a perduré. On a du mal, aujourd'hui, à concevoir qu'il n'y avait pas un seul garde du corps pour veiller sur la sécurité de Moulay Hassan –le futur Roi Hassan II, de ses sœurs Lalla Aïcha et Lalla Malika et de son petit frère, Moulay Abdallah, les quatre enfants (à cette époque) du Sultan (’’Moulay’’ = Monseigneur, Prince ; et ‘’Lalla’’ = Princesse, Madame). Seule présence : leur préceptrice, Mademoiselle Meyer (française, femme, juive : de quoi rendre ivres de haine les fous-furieux d’Allah version 2019).     Nous partions faire d'interminables promenades dans les magnifiques forêts de cèdres… sans jamais dire où nous allions (et pour cause : nos itinéraires variés dépendaient… du vent !), ni à quelle heure nous rentrerions, mais je ne sache pas que quelqu’un se soit jamais inquiété. Nous croisions des pauvres campements de nomades sous leurs ’‘Khaïmas” (ces grandes tentes noires typiques de la tradition berbère), on s'arrêtait pour bavarder ou prendre un chevreau nouveau-né dans nos bras, puis on repartait… dans l’insouciance totale des uns comme des autres.

  Mes souvenirs parlent tous d'un pays où la sécurité était “de définition”, où chaque village avait, pas très loin de la mosquée, une petite église dont la cloche sonnait les heures et les demies, où un brave franciscain essayait de répondre aux besoins de tout le monde (en temps de guerre, “essayer” est beaucoup plus fréquent que “répondre”, puisqu'il n'y a rien à donner ni à partager !). Il y avait alors 200 églises au Maroc. Il en reste 45. A Ifrane par exemple, c'était une petite baraque en bois, identifiée par un petit clocher de rien du tout… L'été, les messes étaient dites en plein air, dans une “île”, au milieu d'une ravissante petite rivière qui serpentait entre deux cascatelles : l'île de la Vierge, tout un programme ! Mais jamais personne n'a eu l'idée qu'un marocain pourrait nourrir la moindre mauvaise attention à l'égard de ces “incroyants”…  L'aurait-on eue que ça n'aurait pas servi à grand chose, sans doute : l'autorité du Protectorat était représentée en tout et pour tout par un très sympathique Pandore d'un âge certain (tous les hommes en âge de l'être étaient mobilisés) et ses deux assistants marocains, aussi gentils et illettrés qu’inefficaces.

  Plus tard, sous l'impulsion de Roosevelt, les Etats-Unis (qui, au nom du droit des peuples à disposer d’eux-mêmes, récusaient le protectorat français pour mieux étendre leur influence) ont entraîné une prise de conscience du nationalisme marocain, face à une administration française désorganisée par des luttes à mort entre pétainistes, gaullistes et “giraudistes”, juste à un moment où se déployait la nouvelle idéologie anticolonialiste, devenue depuis dominante, et à laquelle le Sultan ne pouvait pas ne pas être sensible. Le Maroc et la France sont alors entrés dans une période un peu plus “tendue” (qui n'a jamais été au delà du “tolérable”).       Mais, pour en revenir au voyage du Pape, les mésententes, querelles, soupçons et violences ne sont jamais sortis du cadre politique et n'ont jamais interféré avec les religions. Jamais, il faut le dire haut et fort, l'islam et la chrétienté (pas plus que le judaïsme) n'ont connu de confrontation au Maroc, et chacun des mot prononcés hier par le Roi Mohammed VI est le reflet d’une réalité historique indiscutable.

  Des mesquineries, des lâchetés, des erreurs, de “l’impérialisme vieux style” ont évidemment été commis (la plupart d’entre eux étaient inévitables, ne serait-ce que statistiquement). Ils paraissent tout de même bien bénins, comparés aux horreurs perpétrées dans les crimes totalitaires, intégristes, religieux commis de nos jours.       Mais dans un monde qui privilégie le conformisme des idéologies les plus folles et les plus mensongères (cf. les croyances de notre Président sur la colonisation !), il était bon, me semble-t-il, d'évoquer un temps pas tellement lointain où l'Islam n'était pas en majorité un vecteur de haine, de violence, de djihad, d'assassinats et  de terreur, à l'opposé complet de ce qu'il est encore… mais seulement au Maroc

  Le pari du Pape François, est qu'il faut tout faire pour éviter la confrontation. Celui de ses opposants est qu'il faut savoir arrêter une main trop tendue sous peine de la perdre. Sur ce sujet, comme sur le problème des soi-disant “migrants” si largement évoqué à Rabat, je me garderai d'aller plus loin aujourd'hui : des moments de compréhension, d'ouverture et d'échange comme en ont vu les dernières 48 heures ne doivent pas être pollués par le réalisme, le pragmatisme, ou… l'actualité.

Day 1: Airport pick up to hotel in Cairo. In and around Cairo

Arrive at Cairo airport where you will be met by a representative who will assist you through the formalities.

Transfer to your hotel to meet your guide for a briefing explaining the tour itinerary. Overnight stay at your hotel in Cairo.

Day 2: Cairo, Giza. In and around Giza

After breakfast, we start the tour by visiting the awe-inspiring Great Pyramids and the Sphinx at the Giza Plateau, before heading to Sakkara to visit the Step Pyramid – the first completed pyramid in Egypt – as well as ancient Pharonic tombs. Overnight on A/C bus to Aswan.

Day 3: Aswan. In and around Aswan

Arrive in Aswan. We begin the day with a tour of the romantic Philae Temple – perched atop a picturesque island, its beautiful location is reached by small motorboats, making a truly magnificent approach to the site.

Day 4: Nile Cruise, Kom Ombo

Sail down the Nile in style, relaxing on deck whilst observing rural life on the shores and taking in the changing landscape of the mighty river. Day 5: Nile Cruise to Luxor

After breakfast, we arrive in Luxor, beginning the day with a tour of the East Bank of the Nile. Here you will experience the immense Karnak Temple, considered by some as Egypt’s most important Pharonic site – the country’s powerhouse of ancient times; as well as the magnificent Luxor Temple where visitors are greeted by the impressive Avenue of Sphinxes. Day 6: Luxor to Hurghada, Red Sea

After breakfast we explore the West Bank of Luxor, starting the tour with the world-famous Valley of the Kings, the richest archaeological site on earth. Then on to the breathtaking Temple of Hatshepsut (Deir al-Bahri), built for the only woman to reign over Egypt as pharaoh. Day 7: Hurghada, Red Sea

Day 8: Cairo

Arrive in Cairo where you will be transferred to your hotel. Today we tour the City of Cairo, beginning with the Egyptian Museum where you may view the treasures of King Tutankhamun’s tomb. From there we head to the Coptic area of old Cairo to visit the hanging church, so named as it is suspended above two Roman gate towers. Then on to the Mosque of Mohamed Ali, also known as the Alabaster Mosque, which sits majestically on the summit of the Citadel of Saladin. Afterwards we make our way to the old Cairo Bazaar, Khan El Khalili, with its maze of intriguing alleyways that are home to numerous souvenir stalls and coffee shops. Day 19: Merzouga, Marrakech

Late in the afternoon, you will reach the fascinating city of Marrakech. It is where the Arab city culture meets the Berber culture of the desert and mountain villages. Here, the sub-Saharan traders would trade their wares with European merchants, who would then bring them to Europe. Wear your haggling hats as you discover Djemaa el-Fna Square and brace for the mayhem! Marking the entrance to the huge bazaar, the area is packed with storytellers, snake charmers, acrobats, musicians and folk dancers.
