Small Rant
I watched the premiere of both Part 1 and 2 of Masters of the Universe: Revalations. While I had conflicting feelings about the first part, and such strong negative reactions towards it. It was mainly because of all the deaths of characters that I had come to love. Orko being the hardest one of all.
my fiance had to stop me from watching the rest because I couldnt breathe. I have strong reactions to story telling and Ive never been able to understand why.
Recently Ive seen stuff from this channel called The Quartering. And while I try to stay out of politics, I can easily tell he is conservative and really really likes to bully. Saying Kevin Smith lied and that this was Never what MOTU was about. I have to disagree with most of what he says.
Teela being Aggressive and "Feminist"
Teela was always a conflicting character for me. But to say that they changed her for revalations is a complete Lie. There are several episodes where her hot headedness gets in the way and causes conflict. One of the first episodes is about her trying to find out who her mother is.
Another Episode has to do with the very last Unicorn, Her and Adam go and talk to The Baron of the Hunt to ask him not to, and she cant contain herself.
Not only is it present in the 1983 TV show, but In the 2002 series too. She is often calling Adam a coward. To say she has never been "like this" before, its just a lie.
Theres even evidence in the comic series. In all of them, she's often quick to anger and is bossy. Hell, in the He Man vs Injustice Mossman has to physically restrain her so that she doesn't kick Batman's Ass.
I guess what im trying to say is that its OK to change the narrative. MOTU was never JUST about He man. Orko and Teela had tons of episodes about them, and for Revalations to explore the different possibilities of characters. Is wonderful. I may not agree with everything theyre doing, but so far, I enjoy where its going. And I am sick and tired of people like The Quartering for actively trying to shut up a different narrative because his "Manly Show" has Girls that fight too.

Vacation During A “Vacation” (Part Two)
Pairing: Ashton Irwin x Reader
Author: @cxddlyash
Words: 4173
Author's Note: Here is part two everyone! This is basically pure fluff and sexual innuendos :)
Tumblr media
Ashton and I just got off the plane in Papeete which is on the big island of Tahiti. I laced my fingers with Ash as we strolled over to the giant board of flights. “Are they just going to put our luggage on the other plane or do we have to gather it?” I asked, my eyes scanning for the flight time to Motu Mute.
“Yeah, they are. We’ve got about half an hour until we need to get on the other plane,” Ashton mumbled and I glanced up at the tall boy. His thumb rubbed against the back of my hand as my stomach rumbled a bit. “You hungry?” He chuckled, looking down at me.
I just smiled, nodding my head a bit before letting go of his hand. “I’m gonna go get a few snacks. You want anything?” I asked and he shook his head, dipping down a bit to press a short kiss to my lips. I walked towards the small convenience store, strolling through the isles to find a couple things that’ll fill me up until dinner tonight. I grabbed a bag of Cheetos, Skittles, and a bottle of water before bringing it up to the cash register.
“Is that everything?” The guy asked after ringing up my items. I shook my head, giving him a small smile as he pressed a couple buttons. “Your total is $5.67.” I gave him six dollars and waited for him to give me my change, glancing back at Ashton to see him talking to some girl. I furrowed my brows at them, noticing her flirty stature. “Miss?” The cashier called out and I snapped out of my daze.
“Sorry, thank you,” I mumbled, grabbing my change from him along with the bag before leaving the store. I slowly walked back towards Ashton and the strange girl, seeing him playing with the ring I got him. A smile came onto my lips, fully trusting Ash but… this girl is not letting up.
She rested a hand on his arm, slowly rubbing his skin. “So, is this your first time in Tahiti?” She asked and Ashton nodded his head. “If you want I can show you around.” Her hand trailed up his arm, fiddling with his shirt and he politely stepped away from her.
“I’m sorry, but I’m proudly in a relationship,” he mumbled, showing her the ring on his finger and her face fell, clearing her throat a bit before walking away without another word. I licked my lips a bit and stepped towards him, my fingers coming into contact with his back.
I gave him a smile when he looked down at me and he let out a small breath. “You okay?” I asked and Ashton shook his head a bit. I was about to ask him what was wrong when he grabbed my cheeks, connecting our lips. My eyes widened a bit before slowly closing, kissing him back with the same amount of pleasure. He pulled away a few seconds later, moving some of the hair from my face. “W-What was that for?”
“I just… I love you, so much. C’mon we have to go through Customs and God knows how long that could take,” he mumbled, grabbing my hand before heading towards that area.
I squeezed his hand, keeping my eyes on him. “You dealt with that girl well,” I decided to bring up and he tensed under my touch. “I’m not mad at you if that’s what you’re thinking. I trust you, Ash.”
Ashton brought my hand to his lips, pressing a gentle kiss to the back of it as we approached customs.
-
Ashton and I had just settled into our one-bedroom Otemanu overwater bungalow suite. A gasp left my lips as I saw the view we got from our deck. “Holy shit, Ashton,” my lips parted, stepping out of the bungalow towards the railing. His arms wrap around my waist and his face nuzzled into my hair. “I-I can’t believe we’re here.”
“Believe it, baby,” he mumbled, moving his hands to the railing in front of us.
“I still can’t believe you did this for me,” I whispered, turning around to lean against the rail and Ashton grinned.
“I told you. You’re so so special to me. I’ve never loved someone like I love you. I’m really glad you decided to say yes the first time I asked you out,” Ash expressed and I blushed remembering the first time he asked me on a date.
Jess and I had just walked into the bar we went to almost every weekend. The two of us were laughing at something she said, wiping the tears from my eyes as we walked up to the bar. “Good to see you, ladies, again! The usual?” The bartender, Chad, asked to which we nodded our heads.
Chad began making my usual, Sex on the Beach, and Jess’s usual which is a Mojito. He had just slid my drink towards me when Jess bumped my arm repeatedly. “What?” I asked, glancing towards her as her eyes were on something else.
“Hotties. Six o’clock,” she stated and I followed her gaze towards four boys who stood about ten feet from us. My eyes gravitated towards the one with sandy blonde hair that almost reached the top of his shoulders. His eyes moved towards me and they connected for a few seconds before swiftly looking away.
I turned back towards the bar, feeling my cheeks heat up. “Oh, god. Did he see me?” I asked both Chad and Jess to which they shook their head. I let out a huff of breath, nodding my head a bit as I took a sip, a big sip. I missed the look Jess gave Chad as I basically downed the drink I ordered.
“Hey, Chad can I get another rum and coke and whatever she’s having,” an unfamiliar voice asked and I looked towards the voice. The guy who I was just staring at stood beside me and I stood up straight, darting my eyes towards Jess.
“I thought you said he didn’t see me?” I whisper-shouted to her and she shrugged her shoulders, taking a sip of her drink. I let out a small sigh, looking back towards the cute man. “T-Thanks for the drink,” I mumbled, grabbing the newly filled drink in front of me.
He grinned, his hazel eyes shining in the dimmed light. “I’m Ashton, by the way,” he introduced, sticking his hand out towards me.
“Hi, Ashton. I’m Y/N,” I quietly told him, my cheeks flushed.
Ashton and I hung out together for a couple hours, seeming to drown everything else out as the two of us sat in a booth near the bar. I was just finishing my third drink as I felt Ashton’s eyes on me and looked over at him, giving him a small smile. “You know… I’m not sure what quidditch position you play, but I’m sure you’re a keeper,” he grinned and I stifled a laugh, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear.
“Oh my god, Ash,” I mumbled, shaking my head as I heard him chuckle. “Was that your way of asking me out, or?”
“Where did you even find that pick up line?” I asked, resting my head on his chest while wrapping my arms around his waist.
Ashton let out an embarrassed laugh, his hand resting in the middle of my back as we faced the Mount Otemanu. “I uh, actually found it on the internet and thought maybe it worked. I actually noticed you a couple weeks before and the guys finally convinced me to go talk to you after we made eye contact,” he mumbled against my hair.
“I guess you were lucky I was a Harry Potter fan,” I joked, pulling away from him. I softly bit my lip as my hands moved up his chest slowly. “So, uh… you wanna test that king size bed out?” I asked and his eyes darkened a bit.
He moved his hands to the back of my thighs, picking me up and I let out a small squeal. Ashton’s lip landed on my neck, moving up my jaw as he carried me into the bungalow. He dropped me onto the bed, landing on the mattress with a soft thud and I combed my fingers through his hair. “You’re so beautiful,” he whispered against my skin, hovering over me.
“I know I’ve said it quite a lot the past week but, I love you,” I mumbled before pulling his face closer to mine, connecting our lips. One of Ashton’s hand slid up my shirt while he deepened the kiss, his free hand pressed to my cheek.
His lips left mine and a small whine escaped. “I love you. Now, let me take care of you just the way you like it…” Ashton smirked, pulling the legging off your legs before spreading my thighs apart.
-
I woke up to the feeling of Ashton’s fingers gliding down my side, the sound of waves crashing against the beach nearby something I could wake up to for the rest of my days. I slowly opened my eyes, turquoise waters being the first thing I see. I turn over facing Ashton, holding the comforter just above my bare chest as the blanket was resting just above his waistline, leaving little to the imagination. “Morning, baby,” I mumbled, smiling ear to ear as his eyes left his phone screen.
“Morning, beautiful. Sleep well?” Ash asked, smirking a bit and I could feel the blush cover my cheeks. I mumbled a “shut up” while nuzzling my face into his neck, our legs tangling together. “So, I’ve been looking up activities they have here and thought we could do some.” I grabbed his free hand, looking at his phone screen as he continued scrolling through the list. My fingers fiddled with his as he scrolled to the top, beginning to read some off. “They have a glass bottom boat tour, a sunset crater expedition which I added to the list because I know you like to watch sunsets,” he added, kissing the top of my head.
“You know me so well,” I giggled, glancing up at him for a few seconds.
“Oh! They’ve got a shark and ray snorkel safari!” He gushed and I shook my head immediately. “What?! Why not?”
I sat up slightly, leaning against the headboard, still holding the blankets above my chest. “Uh, what’s the first word again?” I asked him and Ash furrowed his brows.
“Shark-”
“Exactly! There’s no no way I’m getting in the ocean with sharks around, nuh uh!” I gushed, shaking my head as Ashton let out a laugh.
“Fine fine. No snorkeling with sharks got it.” I chuckled, pressing my lips sloppily to his cheek before he continued with reading through the list. “Okay, so you don’t wanna snorkel with sharks. Is it just sharks or all types of fish?” He asked and I shook my head.
“No, it’s just sharks, babe,” I answered while placing small kisses on his bare shoulder.
Ashton’s hand landed on my thigh under the blanket, rubbing softly. “Okay, well they have snorkeling but it’s with anemone fish, moray eels, manta rays and eagle rays,” he offered.
“Yeah, we could do that,” I grinned and moved away from him. “That bathtub is calling my name, so you can either come with me or you can stay here and continue with the list of activities.” A smirked appeared on my lips as I slipped out of the bed.
Shuffling could be heard as Ashton got up, his body pressing against mine while the two stepped towards the bathroom. “You’re going to be the death of me, I swear,” he groaned as his lips glided across my warm skin.
-
Reef Discovery Whale Watching Tour…
Three other couples including Ashton and I were departing out deeper from shore, our whale watching tour beginning. I sat on one of the seats, resting my arms against the rail as my chin rest on my arms. Ash stood behind me, both of us looking out into the deeper blue waters.
“You think we’ll get lucky and see one?” My boyfriend asked and I glanced over my shoulder.
I nodded a bit, giving him a grin. “I think we’ll get lucky,” I chuckled, standing up beside him.
He wrapped his arm around my waist, pulling me closer to him as one of the girls smiled at us. “How long have you guys been together?” She asked, gaining our attention.
“Three years and counting,” I answered before he could. Ashton smiled softly before pressing a kiss to my lips.
“Well, you guys are super adorable together,” she told us, sipping her water.
“Thank you,” Ashton mumbled while smiling politely at her. The conversation ended there as her man sat down beside her.
“Okay! Up here is where the whales are usually seen. Let’s hope some of them feel like making an appearance on this gorgeous day!” The tour guy called out enthusiastically.
I pulled my phone out, opening the camera app in case one comes up from the water. To our luck, not even five minutes later one of the whales could be seen at the top of the water, swimming about ten feet from the boat. A small gasp left a few of our lips as the beautiful creature came up. I snapped a few pictures as it fell back into the water, splashing us heavily with water.
A laugh left my lips as it basically drenched us, stuffing my phone back into my pocket and turned towards Ash who was giggling also. “Well, at least we’re abjt cooled off now,” he joked.
Spa & Pool Time…
Since the gift came with a spa day I decided to use it while Ash stayed at the bungalow. After getting taking my shorts and tank top off, leaving me in my bra and panties I laid on the table, already feeling a bit relaxed with the aura that surrounded the place.
“You’re getting a Polynesian massage, yes?” A lady asked while placing a towel over my ass. I nodded my head in answer and her hands left my skin. Bottle caps opening could be heard as she put oil onto my skin, feeling the coolness of it turn to warmth almost immediately. The lady started with my legs, digging her fingers into my calves moving up to the back of my thighs. “So, are you here with family or a lover?”
A blush came to my cheeks as I heard the word lover. The two of us had been intimate quite a lot since we’ve been here… which happened to be day three. “A-A lover,” I stuttered, smiling a bit as I wiggle my fingers.
She hummed in response, her hands moving to my feet. I tried super hard to keep them still, not giving into the ticklish feeling. “How long have you been lovers?” She asked and I chuckled, turning my head to the side.
“Three years. This was my anniversary gift. My gift to him seems a bit underrated compared to this,” I laughed as did she, asking me what I had got Ashton. “I got him a promise ring with the words “I love you” engraved inside. We’ve always talked about taking the next step forward in our relationship and with him and his band being on hiatus at the moment it’s been a wonderful to get to spend so much time with him.”
“Do you think he’s the one?” The woman asked as she stepped in front of me, her feeble hands going down my back.
I thought about it for a moment. Ashton’s been fucking wonderful since the beginning. I honestly don’t think I’ve been in a relationship where I’m this happy even though he’s gone a lot. “Yeah, yeah. I definitely believe he’s the one. There’s no one else really like him. Ashton means everything to me,” I answered with a soft tone, my heart beating quicker in my chest.
After my hour spa I couldn’t feel more relaxed. Actually, I don’t think I’ve ever been this relaxed. I made it back to our bungalow, which was at the end of the walkway, in about ten minutes. I head inside, hearing Ashton’s music playing softly in the background.
“Ash? Baby?” I called out, setting the key onto the table before walking past the sliding door, finding my lovable drummer boy in the pool. “Hey.”
His head snapped up at my voice, a grin coming onto his lips as he stood up from the edge heading towards me. “Hey, How was the message?” Ashton asked, pressing a quick kiss to my forehead before I stepped into the bedroom.
“It was great!” I called out, pulling out my black two-piece. “I’d come back here just for the messages,” I laughed while slipping my clothes off. Ashton leaned against the sliding door jam.
“You know… it is getting a bit dark. We could always go skinny dipping?” He asked and my eyes glanced towards him, giving him a look. “Come on! We haven’t gone skinny dipping in like a year and a half. Plus, we’re at the end so no one's gonna see.”
A sigh left my lips, tossing the bikini onto the bed. “Fine, but I’m telling you right now… there’s no way we don’t end up fucking in that pool,” I bit my lip, walking past him naked towards the heated pool.
Stand Up Paddle Board…
I covered my mouth with my hand as I stood on the beach of the lagoon, watching Ashton fall off the paddle board… again. You’d think for a guy who could kinda surf would be good at this, right?
“I hear you!” Ashton called out, pushing the wet hair from his face as I blew him a kiss.
“Love you, sweet cheeks!” I grinned, chuckling. Him and the instructor made their way back towards the shore as Ashton continued his way towards me.
He stood a couple inches in front of me, staring into my eyes as a smirk came onto his lips. “If you think it’s so easy… why don’t you give it a try,” Ashton offered and I scoffed a bit, crossing my arms over my chest.
“Maybe I will. Don’t get offended if I’m better than you,” I winked, patting him on the chest before walking past him towards the instructor.
We got out into the water and I hopped onto it, steadying myself onto my knees before attempting to stand up. I let out a huff of breath as the man held onto it, glancing towards the shore to see Ashton watching with a big grin on his face. One foot at a time I managed to stand up, an excited laugh leaving my lips as I looked back towards Ash.
“Baby! I did it!” I first pumped, grinning ear to ear as the dork began to clap loudly earning glances from around us. He stopped, running out towards us as the instructor let go, handing me the paddle.
“You think you can stay on while I get on?” Ash asked and my eyes widened a bit before letting out an unsure nod.
Luckily, I didn’t fall off. Ash sat in front of me as I began to paddle around the lagoon, looking absolutely everywhere before gazing down at him. “Hey, Ash?” I called out, earning a hum from him as he tipped his head back. “Isn’t this supposed to be the other way around?” I asked with a smirk and he rolled his hazel eyes playfully.
“Shut up, dork,” he mumbled, smiling up at me as I combed my fingers through his hair. “It’s cute I get to experience being romanced instead of doing the romancing.”
The Love Boat Private Sunset Lovers Cruise…
The driver of the boat had just set off from shore, taking Ash and I around the lagoon. The two of us sat closely on the front of the boat, coconuts filled with champagne in our hands. “I can’t believe it’s our last night here,” I mumbled, resting my head on his shoulder as the sun started to set.
Ashton nodded his head, placing a kiss on the top of my head. “I know. Honestly, I love our friends and all but I think we needed this,” he stated, taking a sip from the coconut.
“I know I was a bit paranoid at first since I’m sure this wasn’t cheap but I feel the same way. It’s nice to getaway with my best friend and lover,” I smiled, leaning closer to him and pressing my lips to his.
We kissed for what seemed like minutes which turns out to be just a few seconds. He pulled away from me, resting his forehead against mine. “I love you, so much. I really do. Ever since I first saw you I knew you were different from all my other love interests, in a good way of course,” he added and I chuckled, drinking some of the champagne. “You have no idea how nervous I was when I took you out the first time by ourselves. I was afraid you were gonna have a terrible time and then you’d never wanna see me again, but you didn’t.”
“Ash…” I mumbled, tearing up a bit as he took us down memory lane and he shook his head, moving some hair out of my face before continuing.
“I knew you were the one one when you witnessed my flaws, my bad days and you stuck around. You always told me, “tomorrow will be better. It’ll always be better.” I can’t even thank you enough for helping me through the hard times, sticking around when I’d leave for months at a time. No one understands me like you do… except Cal, he might,” Ashton laughed, making me laugh as well. He set his coconut down, moving in front of me as I furrowed my brows. “I-I never want to experience not having you in my life. I love you with all my heart.”
Ashton propped himself on one knee, digging into his pocket as I sat up straight. My heart pounded against my rib cage as he pulled a velvet box out. “Y/N L/N… will you do the honor and becoming my one and only, my wife, Mrs. Ashton Irwin?” He asked while opening the box, showing off the gorgeous silver three-stone engagement ring.
I covered my mouth, eyes tearing up as I moved to my knees. “Y-Yes, yes of course,” I gushed, sniffling a bit as the couple people who worked on the boat clapped their hands, the camera going off as Ashton took the ring from the box, shakingly putting it onto my ring finger. “I love you…”
-
The day after we got back from Bora Bora the guys had come over for lunch. Ashton stood behind me as I ordered the pizza and wings, to Mike’s request, his hands sliding around my hips. I hung up the phone, setting it onto the island before looking out our sliding door. “Aren’t you getting beers?” I asked, glancing behind me.
“Yeah, just wanted to show you a bit of love that’s all,” he grinned and I giggled. I stood on my toes, pressing a quick kiss to his lips before heading to the fridge to grab a corona, shoving a lime into it.
I walked out the sliding door, Ash not far behind me as I took a seat across from Michael. “Pizza's been ordered. Should be here in roughly thirty minutes,” I told the boy and he grinned.
Luke’s eyes have been glued to my hands as I took a drink of beer, Ashton sitting down beside me and handing the three beers to his friends. “Y/N?” The blonde asked and I set the bottle onto the glass table.
“Yes, Lukey?” I answered, turning my head towards him.
“Is that… a ring on your wedding finger?” He asked and your eyes widened, silently cursing yourself for forgetting to take it off before they got here. Ashton and I weren’t too sure how to tell them but I guess this is a good time.
I glanced towards Ash as he subtly nodded his head. “It is,” he answered for me, laying his large hand on my leg. “I, uhm, I asked her to marry me while in Bora Bora.”
Luke and Michael’s jaw dropped as Cal just smirked, taking a drink of his beer. “What!? That’s incredible dude! Congrats you two,” Michael basically gushed, grinning widely.
“About fucking time,” Calum mentioned, smirking at the two of us. “I knew he wanted to marry you after the third date.”
I couldn’t help the smile coming to my lips, fiddling with the ring on my finger as I glanced towards Ashton. His eyes were already on me and placed a kiss on my head. “What can I say… I found my perfect someone.”

KTU 1.23 (Dawn and Dusk/The Gentle Gods)
Tumblr media
It’s been a while since my last translation, but I hope you enjoy this one as much as I do.  It’s an odd Ugaritic text: the first half is a fragmented mish-mash of ritual instructions and mythic imagery, while the second half is a ribald tale about Ilu, the Father-God, and the consequences of his libido.  I have included several notes to outline my own read of the text, but I want to emphasize that many of its elements are still debated by scholars, so you should take my observations with several grains of salt.  Notably, I argue that in the “bawdy comedy” section, the text includes a fairly explicit depiction of two women having sex with each other.
I welcome the Gentle Gods — [1]        the graceful sons of the Sun-Go[ddess], those granted honor from the heights, [2]        in the wilderness and the barren plateaus.
… upon their heads, and …
Feast abundantly upon the feast!        Drink abundantly of the bubbly wine! Grant peace to the king!        Grant peace to the queen,        to the guests and the guards!
The Death-Lord is seated:        in his hand, a staff of sterility;        in his hand, a staff of widowhood. The vine-pruner prunes it;        the vine-tier ties it;        like a vine, he drops it on his death-field. [3]
Seven times, he says it over the platform,        and the guests reply.
And the field is the field of Ilu,        the field of Athirat and Lady Mercy. Over the fire, seven times, the youth(s), a great shout:        coriander in milk, mint in butter. Then over the cauldron, seven times again:        incen[se, in]cense.
Lady Mercy goes out to hunt […] She clothes the gent[le] youth […] And the name of the guests […]
The gods’ dwellings are eight, eight […] […] seven times […]
Lapis lazuli, red carnelian […] […] the two lords […] [4]
Yes, I welcome the Gentle Gods,        the ravenous pair, born the [same] day, they who suckle the nipple of Athirat [5]        […] the Sun-Goddess, who tends to their vulnerability. […] and grapes.
Grant peace to the guests and the guards,        walking with the sacrifice of gentleness.
In the field of Ilu,        the field of Athirat and Lady Mercy,        the gods dwell.
[Ilu walks along] the sea shore;        he strides the shore of the Great Deep. Ilu [sees] two women mounting each other —        two women mounting each other, head to “cauldron.” [6] Watch!  One sinks down.        Watch!  One rises up. Watch!  One shouts, “daddy, daddy!”        Watch!  One shouts “mommy, mommy!”
Ilu’s member lengthens like the sea —        yes, Ilu’s member [rises] like the tide. Ilu’s member lengthened like the sea —        yes, Ilu’s member [rose] like the tide.
Ilu seizes the two women mounting each other,        the two women mounting each other, head to “cauldron.” He seizes [them] and puts them in his house.
Ilu has pulled out his “staff”;        Ilu has palmed the rod with his hand. Raising it, he shoots skyward:        he has shot a bird from the sky! Plucking it, he puts it on the embers:        in this way, Ilu ravishes the women.
If the two women shout, “Oh husband, husband,        pulling out your staff,                palming the rod with your hand!        Watch out!  You’re roasting the bird on the fire,                but you’ve burned it on the coals.” Then they are wives indeed, wives of Ilu,        wives of Ilu forever.
But if the two women shout, “Oh daddy, daddy,        pulling out your staff,                palming the rod with your hand!        Watch out!  You’re roasting the bird on the fire,                but you’ve burned it on the coals.” Then they are daughters indeed, daughters of Ilu,        daughters of Ilu forever. [7]
And then the two women shout, “Oh husband, husband,        pulling out your staff,                palming the rod with your hand!        Watch out!  You’re roasting the bird on the fire,                but you’ve burned it on the coals.” They are wives of Husband Ilu,        wives of Ilu forever.
He leans down and kisses their lips.        Oh, oh!  Their lips are sweet,               sweet as pomegranates. With kissing comes conception;        with lovemaking comes climax. The two squat down and give birth        to Dawn and Dusk.
A message arrives for Ilu:        “The wives of Ilu gave birth!” “To what did they give birth?”        “To the two boys, Dawn and Dusk!” “Raise a gift to the Great Sun-Goddess,        and to the unchanging stars.”
He leans down and kisses their lips.        Oh, oh!  Their lips are sweet,               sweet as pomegranates. With kissing comes conception;        with lovemaking comes climax. [8] [Ilu] sits down […]        he counts to five […]        […] ten, the pair is complete. The two squat down and give birth        to the Gentle Gods: Devourers of the day, sons of one day,        they who suckle the nipple of the breast.
A message arrives for Ilu:        “The wives of Ilu gave birth!” “To what did they give birth?”        “To the Gentle Gods: “Devourers of the day, sons of one day,        they who suckle the nipple of the breast of the lady. “One lip on the earth,        one lip in the sky. “Everything goes into their mouths:        the birds of the sky,        and the fish of the sea. “And they stand from one edge to the other,        devouring to the right and to the left. “Nothing in their mouths can sate them.” [9]
“Wives that I married,        sons that I fathered: “Raise a gift        from within the holy wilderness. “You will be refugees there —        refugees among the stones        and among the trees, “for a total of seven years,        eight circuits of time.”
The Gentle Gods journey to the field;        they hunt at the edge of the wilderness. Then they approach the Guardian of Farmland [10]        and call out to the Guardian of Farmland:        “Oi, guardian!  Guardian!  Open up!” So he opens up a passage near them,        and they enter. “If you’ve got bread,        give it over, so we can eat! “If you’ve got wine,        give it over, so we can drink!”
The Guardian of Farmland answers them,        “There’s wine that comes from Th[…] …” … appears. He serves a measure of his wine … And his friend fills up with wine …
[1] “Gentle Gods” — or perhaps “Kindly Gods.”  Basically, some scholars argue that the name is a euphemism, like the British “Fair Folk” (fae) or the Greek “Kindly Ones” (Furies).  The polite name for them attempts to flatter and appease.
[2] “Those granted honor from the heights” — a very difficult line.  For instance, another possible translation is, “Those who give a city from above.”
[3] Most of the terms in this evocative section are clear, but their (presumably metaphorical?) meaning is far from apparent.  With great uncertainty, I read this as a metonymic description of the activities of winter: a season of sterility, when grapevines are pruned and fields cleared.  Only by destroying the vines (i.e. welcoming the activity of Motu/Death) can the gardeners ensure a fertile spring and summer.
[4] This section is very broken, but I am personally intrigued by the mention of lapis lazuli and carnelian.  Most scholars interpret these as colors (blue and red) rather than the stones themselves, but this section comes shortly after the discussion of two food-substances and a cauldron.  In Gilgamesh, a pair of lapis and carnelian bowls are part of the funeral rites for Enkidu.  The mineral pair also appears in other Mesopotamian contexts, e.g. a birth charm to predict a child’s sex, in which lapis symbolizes a boy and carnelian symbolizes a girl.  So while red and blue clothing is certainly a possible reading, I take the gems literally.  This also affects the following word — šr can mean a singer or a prince, and I view it as a return to the twin Gentle Gods.
[5] Athirat is of course the equivalent of Hebrew “Asherah,” the mother-goddess and wife of Ilu.
[6] “Two women mounting each other, head to ‘cauldron.’” This is certainly my most radical divergence from standard translations, but it’s also a translation of a section that has been a difficult crux for scholars.  “Two-women-mounting-each-other” is a single word in Ugaritic, appearing nowhere outside this passage, so my breakdown of its etymology is speculative, but it’s along very similar lines to the standard interpretation (“two-women-bobbing-up-and-down”).  (Technical explanation: I agree that it’s a Št participle, but I connect it to the Šp in KTU 1.5.v.21, which clearly refers to sexual mounting.  So if the Š passive means “to be mounted,” I speculate that the Š reflexive means “to mount each other.”)  “Cauldron” appeared earlier in the text as a ritual implement, but it’s the same root word that appears in Song of Songs 7:2 as a metaphor for the navel/vulva/loins, overflowing with “spiced wine.”  In short, I believe that this describes two women engaging in oral sex with each other.
Since the following sections involve overt ribald humor, and since whatever Ilu sees causes immediate arousal, this meaning is hardly out of place in the passage.  However, if I’m correct, this would still be a remarkable precedent, since I’m unaware of any other ancient Near Eastern text that describes details of sexual acts between women (as we do see in Greek texts, for instance).  If any fellow Ugaritic scholars are reading this, I would welcome your thoughts on the topic.
[7] “Daughters of Ilu for all time” — this designation does not preclude a sexual relationship.  (After all, Ilu has already “ravished” the pair!)  Ba’al had three “daughters” who were also his wives/consorts, and adoption may have been an ancient legal option for betrothing a woman too young to marry yet.  Perhaps — but this is a guess — the distinction is whether the two women are post-pubescent, i.e. able to conceive Ilu’s children.
[8] One of the fundamental debates around this passage concerns this repetition.  Did the wives bear two sets of twins (Dawn and Dusk, and then the Gentle Gods)?  Or is this an example of ancient narrative repetition, where the text describes the same event in subsequent passages?  I personally lean toward the latter — I see the text as equating Dawn and Dusk with the Gentle Gods, rather than depicting them as the older siblings of the pair.
[9] What’s going on with these terrifyingly ravenous gods?  Analyses differ, but here’s my theory (predicated on the assumption that they are equated with Dawn and Dusk).  Dawn and Dusk are literally the two bookends on each day; they “consume” the sun, then regurgitate it each morning, and nothing can escape the fall of night.  As long as each dusk brings another dawn, equilibrium is maintained.  But during the winter, the days are growing shorter — which means that Dawn and Dusk are moving closer to each other, gobbling up more of each successive day.  Therefore, a midwinter ritual might seek to reverse that pattern, so that Dawn and Dusk don’t continue until the whole world is enveloped in darkness.  Up until this point, the sources of light included the Sun-Goddess and the stars, but the introduction of Dawn and Dusk destabilizes the sun’s reign, creating a crisis that must be addressed by Ilu.
[10] “The Guardian of Farmland”: “farmland” is simply the term for soil that has been tilled and sown, i.e. not wilderness.  The Gentle Gods have reached the border between wilderness and civilization, and are met by a guard.  Although their interaction is broken, I believe that this is the mythic interaction underlying the ritual at the beginning: in order to placate the ravenous Gentle Gods, a feast of food and wine is offered to them — but not free access to the civilized world.

Recap post: why Undertaker may not be the mastermind behind the blue sect
A/N: this is just a theory, please let me know if you think I forgot something or if there is a point that’s not clear. Very long post, heavy with spoilers.
First of all, I think we can all agree that, whoever the mastermind is, there isn’t any doubt that they are a supernatural character...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...And narratively speaking, after the Campania and Weston arcs, it’s indeed logical for both the readers and the characters to initially assume that the most likely suspect when the dead is brought back to life (here: real!Ciel aka Lord Sirius, as well as maybe the other Lords) is UT himself.
However, are we really sure at this point that Yana will go for the same ploy for the third time? Well, obviously this theory is here to propose that Yana won’t play the predictable card after such a complex and long arc. :) Onto the hints:
A different motus operandi...
Different “bizarre dolls”...
...Thus a different mastermind?
real!Ciel vs our!Ciel
UT in ch108 & ch120
Additional links
1) A different motus operandi...
...Which for now creates a plot hole if UT is the mastermind, because what we were shown of the blue sect’s method (= blood transfusions + ???) doesn’t fit with UT’s previous technique to bring back the dead during the Campania (= editing cinematic records with fake memories) and Weston (= editing CRs with “episodes” aka yearning for the future) arcs.
One argument would be to say that he changed his method of editing cinematic records to base his project on blood transfusions (+ something else) instead after Weston, but...
Tumblr media
...He seemed to find Ryan’s attempt of using science to bring back the dead laughable during the Campania arc, so for now it’s hard to think he would have ended up using science as well.
Another argument I’ve seen would be to say that the BDs we saw during the Campania/Weston arcs were from old experiments and that he actually changed his method a while back, but as brilliantly put by @thedarkestcrow [x]:
If he had known all along how to make a perfect Bizarre Doll, why did he wait so long? And why would he risk being found out and risk that the twin (if he really hid him) would be found by creating the failed Bizarre Dolls? No one suspected Undertaker of anything until the Campania arc so even if he did indeed hide the twin it may have been much easier if he had hidden his true identity and his experiments, too.
Besides, as pointed out by @hitsugikuro, assuming that Othello and UT do know each other (”50 years ago”)...
Tumblr media
...it’s possible that Othello was speaking of UT in ch119 when he mentioned someone (a deserting Shinigami?) who wasn’t “very knowledgeable in this [science] field”, thus reminding us possibly once more of UT’s opinion about bringing back the dead through science and crossing him out of the suspect list.
Secondly, there is also the fact that the blue sect has been existing for at least a year and a half, because we know that Bravat was regularly transfusing old Lords from the Parliament until recently...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...which indicates a switch in the sect’s purpose (researching about blood transfusion and helping the old Lords => bringing back the “star Lords”) from the moment Bravat opened the Sphere Music Hall and used the ex-prefects to attract the masses & start massive blood collects during Summer 1889.
Of course, UT could have been a part of them but, again, he doesn’t seem to favor science that much and, even when he was “a part of” the Aurora society, he was pretty much working alone on his bizarre doll project.
Finally, there is a significant item to mention...
Tumblr media
...because surely UT’s “treasure” has to be relevant and maybe even the primary reason he’s trying to bring back the dead. However, there is one interesting thing to notice: if we’re assuming that these lockets represent people UT was fond of, then Vincent and real!Ciel should be on this chain too and yet they’re not.
The explanation for this is rather simple thanks to ch105 though, at least where Vincent is concerned:
Tumblr media
So maybe it was the same for the twin: UT didn’t think that his method could bring Vincent and the twin back as bizarre dolls (because the circumstances of their death damaged their bodies too much?), hence why he had no locket for either of them.
TL;DR if UT’s motus operandi in the Campania & Weston arcs is signficantly different from the mastermind’s motus operandi in this arc then it means...
2) Different “bizarre dolls”...
This part is assuming that Seb indeed never lied and that he was summoned through real!Ciel's sacrifice (after a stab in the heart) and eating his soul, meaning that real!Ciel died at 10 years old and yet...
Tumblr media
He definitely looks as if he never died and is going to turn 14 (?), like our!Ciel.
Again, the difference in methods is probably the reason real!Ciel looks/acts so normal (compared to even Agares, UT’s last masterpiece) and all grown up, when it shouldn’t be possible since there aren’t many doubts that he died and Seb ate his soul, 4 years ago (unless Seb was somehow fooled?).
Secondly, aside from real!Ciel, we probably only saw Lord Polaris so far (since Polaris is Sirius’ butler, real!Ciel is Lord Sirius and Agni’s killer used knives like Polaris)...
Tumblr media
...and Agni, who was a very strong human himself, commented on his killer being unusually strong. So could Polaris’ abnormal strength be the result of these blood transfusions or, more generally, of how the blue sect brings the dead back?
In the first place, only demons should naturally and abnormally be stronger than humans in Kuro!Verse (Shinigamis aren’t). However we know that, just like science is apparently currently used to bring the dead back, it was also used before in the story to introduce abnormal strength for humans...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...when Ciel met Finny while on another (older) mission for the Queen in Germany.
TL;DR if UT is not the mastermind but someone else is: what if real!Ciel and the other star Lords came back as some sort of perfect equivalent to UT’s original bizarre dolls, because different scientific methods were put together to achieve such a “perfect” result?
Of course, this only works if, instead of UT, the mastermind is...
3) ...Thus a different mastermind?
At this point, there is only one possibility amongst the characters we already know, because there is only one person who showed interest in UT’s bizarre dolls...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...when Ciel told her about it, in June 1889, after the Weston arc. Of course, Victoria most likely isn’t a supernatural being, so she was surely helped by her loyal John Brown who would do anything for her (remember that his eyes are always conveniently hidden => there is a good chance he could be supernatural).
The mastermind behind the sect being supernatural!Brown and following Victoria’s wishes works in regards to the whole timeline too:
Bravat’s blue sect was originally used to experiment about blood transfusion until summer 1889...
“if this method can be made to work, it will be a ‘miracle cure’ that can bring the mortally wounded back from the brink of death. I’ve heard that the army is actively conducting experiments to discover just what is necessary to make it a success” => Wolfram, ch114.
...until Victoria and Brown learnt about UT’s bizarre doll from Ciel himsef in June 1889.
Brown then started to experiment by himself, not knowing about UT’s own method, giving the “star Lords” to Bravat’s sect and switching its purpose to using blood transfusion (+???) in order to bring them back from death:
that’s why the Sphere music hall was apparently opened during Summer 1889 and why the massive blood collects only started then
+ knowing about the incident at Weston would also be how Brown tricked the ex prefects and had Bravat using them to attract the masses.
Secondly, Othello said that the technology used by the sect was very advanced (and proof of supernatural involvement)...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and as @hitsugikuro pointed out before, it does look similar to Sieglinde’s own "lab” given to her by Queen Victoria and we know that war against Germany is the reason Victoria was so looking forward to Sieglinde working for “England’s future”.
Tumblr media
War against Germany is probably also the reason Ciel was sent two years ago in Germany to take care of those researchers who were experimenting about artificially enhanced strength, which is when he met and saved Finny, by the way.
We don’t know what happened then, but maybe our!Ciel brought back the formula for this “abnormal strength” to the Queen, or maybe England developed their own, which might explain why Agni described his killer (Polaris) as abnormally strong, if this technique was used on the “star Lords” as well.
Finally...
Tumblr media
there might be a political aspect to the plan with the blue sect, which is to say that Bravat might have also gotten rid of those lords from the Parliament (ch125) so that it would be more difficult for the Parliament to refuse Victoria’s plans for war. Remember...
Tumblr media
...the Queen might not rule but...
Tumblr media
...she has some loyal helpers.
TL;DR the whole point to keep in mind is that Victoria is getting ready for war: that’s why she wanted Sieglinde and her SuLIN, why she sent Ciel to destroy that German lab where Finny was experimented on, why she wants zombie war weapons through bringing back the dead and why she might have assassinated parlimentarians who stood in her way.
The blue sect is simply here to get her what she wants through first mastering the blood transfusion technique (to lose less soldiers), and then a way to experiment about bringing the dead back (to eventually turn more of them into war weapons).
4) real!Ciel vs our!Ciel
Or why Brown and Victoria would bring back the twin now, in order to antagonize the current Watchdog.  There again, there is a possibility for an answer, but first of all, let me insist on why this part for now also makes no sense if UT is the mastermind.
Tumblr media
To this day, I do not think that real!Ciel’s actions are particularly predictable to anyone (please check this post by @akumadeenglish). Seeing the latest chapters before the flashback, it’s evident that he’s not exactly in his right mind and there are many possibilities as to why that is, but for now he’s definitely supposed to be antagonistic.
Meanwhile, UT is literally one of the few characters who has no reason to wish harm on our!Ciel: it always was noticeable in the way he used to give him advice, to watch over him, to imply that he wouldn’t let Seb have his way with his soul, because of UT’s long attachment to the Phantomhive family.
Tumblr media
And since UT probably feels/felt the same attachment towards the twin (and doesn’t favor him, by his own words), it doesn’t make a lot of sense to think that he was hoping for real!Ciel and our!Ciel to fight against each other, or for our!Ciel to be isolated from anyone but Sebastian (since the sect took Lizzie away and real!Ciel almost took Soma away).
Back to the Queen and Brown though, they’re the ones who actually have a few reasons to be crossed with our!Ciel, since:
After the curry arc, he more or less sheltered Agni (one of the culprits) despite his crimes
During the circus arc, he burnt those children, which led to him lying to the Queen about his report
but the Queen found out and organized a murder party as a punishment (@ thanks Grey)
After the green witch arc, he made sure that Sieglinde wouldn’t give or produce for the Queen anything like the SuLIN gas
but the Queen and Brown weren’t fooled, which led to Brown comparing his efficiency to Vincent’s, who is dead.
So for all we know, the current arc might partially be the result of Victoria seeing through his lies about the SuLIN gas in ch108 and being fed up with him for not being a very obedient doggy. Thus why...
Tumblr media
real!Ciel came back as an absolutely similar copy of the Queen’s current watchdog (same age (?), same height, no change of identity, same earrings), so that she would replace the bad doggy with a more obedient one (who might be dependent on those blood transfusions and thus more loyal to her), without having to explain what happened to the previous one since the twins are now exactly similar.
And if somehow you think that it makes her heartless to treat someone who works so hard for her that way, well, maybe it’s time to consider the idea that she has something to do with happened to Vincent and Rachel (and maybe Claudia too, who knows...). xD
TL;DR UT would have no reason to create a feud amongst his beloved Phantomhive family, considering he’s always been more of an ally to them than anything else, which leads to the final part of the explanation...
5) UT in ch108 & ch120
Or, if this theory is accurate, the red herrings that Yana showed to make us think UT was initially behind it all for the third time, since UT was with the twin in these two chapters. However, first please consider the settings of both meetings:
it’s at night
UT is creeping around, as if he wants to be undetected.
Then onto what supposedly happened...
Tumblr media
I’ll quote @thedarkestcrow‘s words once again to explain (A+ writing <3):
Instead of being the mastermind of the sect and supporting it I could rather see him trying to prevent or delay the sect’s success. The one time we saw him he gave one of the Ciels (and it was probably the twin) some liquid and remember his words? (see above)
When he visited the twin/Sirius that night the twin’s condition seemed quite well. Afterwards, however, we saw him having these arms (see above).
So UT may have intentionally worsened the twin’s state. Not with the intention to kill him, of course, but he may have tried to delay his full awakening in order to get time to maybe solve this situation in order to help both twins, not just one.
An idea which would in turn explain why he was checking the twin’s wrist (as if looking for any needle mark, to assess what was going on, maybe?) ...
Tumblr media
...as well as that single panel from ch120 that showed him as very affectionate.
Tumblr media
Because remember what I said about UT’s “treasure”? If real!Ciel and Vincent didn’t have a locket, it might be because UT’s own method of bringing back the dead (through editing the cinematic records) didn’t make it possible for them to come back (too damaged bodies?). So seeing the twin “alive” again must have felt like a shock to UT who cares a lot about the P family (hence the affectionate gesture of ch120), even if he probably tampered with the twin’s “well being” anyway...
because he wanted to stall for time
because he couldn’t bear the idea that the twin too was used as another of the Queen’s pawns (since he dislikes her a lot).
6) Additional links
This part is just an addendum for me to add several links to posts that belong with this theory but that I didn’t particularly include in the explanation (otherwise I would have died):
A reason for the slow pace of this arc by @thedarkestcrow (it works with UT or with Brown)
why didn’t Tanaka look surprised about the twin coming back?
The Undertaker playing chess against the Queen by @hitsugikuro
About Sebastian not being the Undertaker’s main enemy by @hitsugikuro
About the Undertaker trying to thwart the Queen’s war plans
My personal interpretation of the Undertaker’s words in ch105 (to explain why he’s probably not after harming our!Ciel)
Please feel free to ask if anything is unclear, I’m so sorry that this was so long to read but I really believe that, if this arc is taking so long to be finished, it’s because it ties with older arcs/different subplots (besides the 2CT that’s taking a large place of the arc, obviously), hence the gigantic theory. xD
Thanks for reading so far. ^3^

Jean Dubuffet: Brutal Beauty
Mon 17 May – Sun 22 Aug 2021, Barbican Art Gallery
Media View: details to follow soon
Jean Dubuffet: Brutal Beauty is the first major UK exhibition of the work of French artist Jean Dubuffet (1901–1985) in over 50 years. One of the most provocative voices in postwar modern art, Dubuffet rebelled against conventional ideas of beauty, hoping to capture the poetry of everyday life in a gritty, more authentic way. Drawn from international public and private collections, Brutal Beauty brings together more than 150 works: from early portraits, lithographs and fantastical statues to enamel paintings, butterfly assemblages and giant colourful canvases.
Spanning four decades in the studio, Brutal Beauty highlights Dubuffet’s endless experimentation with tools and materials, as he blended paint with shards of glass, coal dust, pebbles, slithers of string and gravel. Shown alongside his work are two dedicated rooms from Dubuffet’s collection of Art Brut, acquired throughout his life – shedding light on artists such as Aloïse Corbaz, Fleury-Joseph Crépin, Gaston Duf., and Laure Pigeon, who profoundly inspired his approach to the making and understanding of art.
Significant works by Dubuffet in the exhibition include the Little Statues of Precarious Life, 1954–59, figures made out of natural sponge, wood charcoal, grapevine and lava stone; and the Texturologies from the late 1950s, inspired by the rich natural surroundings of Vence, Southern France, which pivot between our micro and macro worlds, their delicate speckles having a spellbinding effect. While Paris Circus, 1961, is a series of works drawn from the frenzy of street life bursting with consumerism and featuring a somersault of dense imagery.
Jean Dubuffet: Brutal Beauty is sponsored by Sotheby’s with additional support from Waddington Custot.
Claudia Andujar: The Yanomami Struggle
Thu 17 Jun – Sun 29 Aug 2021, The Curve / The Pit / Barbican Foyers
Media View: Wed 16 Jun 2021
Barbican Art Gallery presents Claudia Andujar: The Yanomami Struggle – an exhibition dedicated to the work and activism of Brazilian artist Claudia Andujar. For over five decades starting in the 1970s, Andujar devoted her life to photographing and defending the Yanomami, one of Brazil’s largest indigenous peoples. At a time when Yanomami territory is threatened more than ever by illegal gold mining, and as Covid-19 continues to sweep the globe, this major exhibition is especially relevant in the context of the humanitarian and environmental crises exacerbated by the pandemic.
Claudia Andujar: The Yanomami Struggle is curated by Thyago Nogueira, Head of Contemporary Photography at the Instituto Moreira Salles in Brazil. Based on years of research into Andujar’s archive, the exhibition explores her extraordinary contribution to the art of photography as well as her major role as a human rights activist defending the Yanomami’s rights. Over 200 photographs, an audio-visual installation, a film and a series of drawings by the Yanomami are brought together in The Curve, The Pit and the Barbican’s foyers. The exhibition will reflect the dual nature of Andujar’s career, committed to both art and activism, as she used photography as a tool for political change.
Tickets for Claudia Andujar: The Yanomami Struggle go on sale to Barbican Members on Thursday 11 March and to the general public on Friday 12 March.

Summer 2021, Barbican Theatre
One of the all-time great musicals Anything Goes makes a welcome return to the London stage this summer, starring Emmy & SAG Award Winner Megan Mullally (Will & Grace) making her West End musical debut as Reno Sweeney, and Tony, Olivier & BAFTA Award-Winner Robert Lindsay as Moonface Martin. Evening Standard Theatre Award Winner Felicity Kendal (The Good Life) will make her West End musical debut starring as Evangeline Harcourt, alongside leading West End actor Gary Wilmot (Chicago / Dirty Rotten Scoundrels) as Elisha Whitney.
This joyous new production of Cole Porter & P.G. Wodehouse’s classic musical will be directed and choreographed by three-time Tony Award-Winner Kathleen Marshall. Marshall’s Broadway production of Anything Goes was a major smash hit and received huge critical acclaim. The revival was nominated for nine Tony Awards and 10 Drama Desk Awards, winning Best Musical Revival and Best Choreography at both ceremonies. Now Marshall, in her West End directing debut, will reinvent this glorious musical for London audiences this summer.

Vox Motus – Flight Mon 17 May – Sun 6 Jun 2021, performance times TBC, Bridge Theatre
From a private booth, audiences are drawn into this tale of orphaned brothers and their desperate odyssey across Europe, the action unfolding in a ‘genuinely magical’ [The Stage] world of moving miniatures.
With their small inheritance stitched into their clothes, young Aryan and Kabir set off on an epic journey by foot from Kabul to London. Braving bustling train stations, hazardous sea crossings, menacing strangers and threats of violence, their heart-wrenching story speaks of terror, hope and survival. Based on Caroline Brothers’ novel Hinterland, Flight combines timely themes with engrossing images to honour the resilience of refugee children adrift in dangerous lands.
At the Bridge Theatre audiences are seated individually and given headphones for this intimate experience staged by Candice Edmunds and Jamie Harrison (magic and illusions designer, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child). Like a 3-D graphic novel brought to life, the revolving scenes contain detailed sets and figures, accompanied by binaural sound and narration.
Tickets for Flight go on sale in the spring. The on-sale date will be announced soon.

Level G Programme
How We Live Now: Reimagining Spaces with Matrix Feminist Design Co-operative
Mon 17 May – Thu 23 Dec 2021, Level G & online
Through an ambitious installation, public programme and publication, How We Live Now: Reimagining Spaces with the Matrix Feminist Design Co-operative invites the public to explore an important social question: who are our buildings and shared spaces designed for, and how do they affect us? After a sustained period of lockdown and increased time spent in domestic spaces, these questions feel more relevant than ever.
The jumping-off point for considering these questions is a previously unseen archive of work by the radical 1980s feminist architecture cooperative Matrix, who addressed the ways in which the design of the built environment excludes particular groups, particularly in relation to gender, race and disability.
The hybrid programme, co-curated with Matrix founding member Jos Boys, will consist of an installation on Level G of the Barbican Centre featuring rare films, drawings, photos and architectural models from the Matrix archive; as well as a series of online talks, workshops, film screenings and walking tours. The accompanying exhibition book, Revealing Objects, is an experimental publication that combines archival reproductions of Matrix materials with contemporary responses to the key themes of the project.
How We Live Now is made possible with Art Fund support.

SC slams states, says Covid situation has gone bad to worse
Tumblr media
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday expressed deep disappointment with state governments for not taking concrete measures against the spread of coronavirus in the country and said “the situation in the last three weeks has gone from bad to worse”. Solicitor general Tushar Mehta said the Union government was constantly monitoring the situation and issuing guidelines regularly to meet the dynamic situation but slackness in implementation of the guidelines, both precautionary and preventive, at the state level had brought about the present situation. He said just 10 states accounted for a vast majority of Covid-19 cases in the country. The Union government in its affidavit said, “Ten states contribute almost 77% of the active Covid-19 caseload for the country. These are Maharashtra (18.9%), Kerala (14.7%), Delhi (8.5%), West Bengal (5.7%), Karnataka (5.6%), Uttar Pradesh (5.4%), Rajasthan (5.5%), Chhattisgarh (5.0%), Haryana (4.7%) and Andhra Pradesh (3.1%).” A bench of Justices Ashok Bhushan, R S Reddy and M R Shah said, “In the last three weeks, states have not taken concrete steps despite the increase in Covid cases. The situation has gone from bad to worse. The states should rise above politics and tighten their belts. The Union government issuing guidelines asking people to mask up and maintain social distancing is fine. But look at what is happening on the ground. People either do not wear masks or wear it improperly. … More stringent steps are required to be implemented vigorously to prevent gatherings.” The Centre’s affidavit said, “As most countries are observing resurgence of Covid cases, given the size and density of our population, the country has done remarkably well in restricting the spread.” The bench took suo motu cognisance of the fire in Uday Shivanand Hospital in Rajkot in which five Covid-19 patients died. Justice Shah said fire in hospitals was a recurring event and it was strange that no one cared for the safety of patients. “These incidents keep recurring. States institute an inquiry and then the entire episode is brushed under the carpet without any preventive mechanism being put in place. There should be some provision for fire safety in hospitals and staff to constantly monitor the mechanism,” he said. Responding to the anguish expressed by the bench, especially Justice Shah, the solicitor general said the Union home secretary will convene a meeting of state officials concerned within 24 hours to put in place fire safety mechanisms in hospitals. The bench asked the Centre and states to file affidavits by Tuesday on this issue.

Dears ,There are many legal and social difficulties involved in the Honarble Indian Supreme Court,s move to take so motu coginisance of children taking part in demonstrations in Shaheen Bagh in Delhi. This has a direct impact on children's right to protest as well as on their mothers right to protest, specifically since the enforcement of the National Register of Citizens and the Citizenship ( Amendment) Act could render both mother and child stateless. Also, why is it perfectly acceptable for children' to participate in an anti pollution protest in peak winter, but not in the protests at Shaheen Bagh? The politics of information
Tumblr media
Source: indiaexpress Designing, using and evaluating information systems is all about perception and perspective. Information systems that might strengthen socio-economic transformation, is contingent on the active participation of people. Digital tools have proliferated over the last decade leaving millions out of the ambit of meaningful participation. MGNREGA worker is the primary producer of information but she has no stake in its presentation and access. The citizen has been made transparent to the State and the market instead of the other way around Aadhaar is a powerful example of this. Rural workers and pensioners have been coerced to migrate to the Aadhaar platform without their explicit consent. The authors make an important mention of the proliferation of management information systems (MIS) without examining its obvious inherent biases. The term “management” itself reflects the lack of a participatory framework in information design. There is a genuine concern in the context of MGNREGA that the MIS has become the de-facto implementing agency thereby burying accountability in reams of software codes hidden behind “administrative logins”. The Right to Information campaign has, for long, made a demand for a Janata Information system (JIS), instead, driven by a democratic and moral compulsion towards an information system designed by and for the people. Activists and concerned citizens have had to campaign for generating and accessing actionable information — to dig for pertinent jaankari (knowledge) from the universe of soochna (available information). Years of reiterative practice have demonstrated that for this to happen, it is imperative that the main users of information must be involved in the complete cycle of information designing of frameworks for information collection, collation, disclosure, and, subsequent action. There has been considerable progress made to take this principle from theory to practice. The Department of Information Technology (DoIT) of the Rajasthan government has engaged with a consortium of civil society organisations working over a range of issues such as MGNREGA, ration, land rights, mining, education and health over the past two years through an ongoing process of consultation called the “Digital Dialogue”: It provided a platform to suggest and determine means by which existing information systems could be reformed for ensuring greater public accountability. This resulted in the development of a JIS for registering, availing and monitoring monetary relief for patients affected by pneumoconiosis/ silicosis; for making applications under the Forest Rights Act, and, enabling applicants to trace their status. This also led to the development of a single window portal known as the “Jan Soochna Portal” for disclosing information related to all the gram panchayat/ward-level schemes. Each of these initiatives were based on consultations with the people to demonstrate how people-centric monitoring systems can be strengthened through appropriately designed technology. There is also an urgent need to move away from the myopia of the digital medium as the sole substrate of information: Dissemination of information shouldn’t be a mutually exclusive, reductive debate of online versus offline. Disclosure of information through MIS is not an act of benevolence by the State. It is a legal mandate. Section 4(2) of the RTI Act makes it mandatory for public authorities to “provide as much information suo-motu to the public at regular intervals through various means of communication, including internet, so that the public have minimum resort to the use of this Act to obtain information.” Administrators need to be mindful of this legal commitment: While there are indeed 400 MISs developed, it is a matter of great distress that they ignore and violate the RTI Act. Admin logins for viewing rights are regularly introduced in the MIS as a way of doing the opposite of what Section 4 of the Act mandates. In any case the only permissible criteria for placing an admin login is under Section 8 of the RTI Act that mandates exemptions to the disclosure of information. Lack of a framework has created situations when the MIS is causing disempowerment. In the MGNREGA MIS, which is more “transparent” than most others, there are numerous instances of how the highly centralised system has resulted in software codes overriding the law A JIS must have at least the following three building blocks to ensure that information does result in insight in a democratic polity: The user groups/affected communities must be compulsorily involved in the complete cycle of information production, dissemination, and action. There must be equal access of information between administrators and citizens. The concept of “administrative logins” promoting privileged access of certain kinds of information to administrators must be revoked. The priority must be to recognise and create a system where information leads to enhanced democratic participation and accountability. Read the full article

‘Promote and protect human life at every stage of its development, its condemnation of abortion and euthanasia as extremely grave evils that contradict the Spirit of life and plunge us into the anti-culture of death’
Papal Text
Pope Francis has sent a letter to the Pontifical Academy for Life to mark its 25th Anniversary, as it was founded 11 February 1994. Here is the Vatican-provided text of Pope Francis’ letter, which was signed, Jan. 6, 2019, and published today:
***
Humana Communitas [The Human Community]
The human community is God’s dream even from before the creation of the world (cf. Eph 1:3-14). In it, the eternal Son begotten of God the Father has taken flesh and blood, heart and emotions. Through the mystery of giving life, the great family of humanity is enabled to discover its true meaning. The ability of the family to initiate its members to human fraternity can be considered a hidden treasure that can aid that general rethinking of social policies and human rights whose need is so urgently felt today. All of us ought to grow in the awareness of our common origin in God’s love and creative act. Christian faith confesses the begetting of the Son as the ineffable mystery of the eternal unity between “bringing into being” and “benevolent love” within the life of the Triune God. A renewed proclamation of this often overlooked revelation can open a new chapter in the history of human community and culture, which today cries out — “groaning as if in labour pains” (cf. Rom 8:22) — for rebirth in the Spirit. God’s tenderness and his will to redeem all those who feel lost, abandoned, discarded, or hopelessly condemned, is revealed in the only-begotten Son. The mystery of the eternal Son who became one of us is the definitive witness to this “passion” of God. The mystery of Christ’s cross — “for us and for our salvation” — and resurrection — as “the firstborn of many brothers” (Rom 8:29) — tells us the extent to which God’s passion is directed to the redemption and full flourishing of human beings.
We need to renew a lively awareness of God’s passion for humanity and its world. Human beings were made by God “in his image” – “male and female” (Gen 1:27) – as spiritual and sentient, conscious and free. The relationship between man and woman is the primary place where all creation speaks with God and bears witness to his love. This world is the place where we are brought to life; it is the place and time in which we gain a foretaste of the heavenly home that is our destiny (cf. 2 Cor 5:1) and where we will live fully our communion with God and with all others. The human family is a community with a common origin and a common goal, whose attainment “is hidden, with Christ, in God” (Col 3:1-4). In our time, the Church is called once more to propose the humanism of the life that bursts forth from God’s passion for human beings. Our commitment to valuing, supporting and defending the life of every human being is ultimately motivated by God’s unconditional love. Such is the beauty and the allure of the Gospel, which does not reduce love of neighbour to criteria of economic or political convenience, or to “certain doctrinal or moral points based on specific ideological options” (Evangelii Gaudium, 39).
A passionate and productive history
1. That passion has inspired the work of the Pontifical Academy for Life from the time it was created twenty-five years ago by Saint John Paul II at the prompting of the eminent scientist and Servant of God Jérôme Lejeune. Recognizing the rapid and sweeping changes taking place in biomedicine, Pope John Paul saw the need for a more structured and organic approach and engagement in this area. The Academy was thus able to promote initiatives of research, education and communications aimed at demonstrating “that science and technology, at the service of the human person and his fundamental rights, contribute to the overall good of man and to the fulfilment of the divine plan of salvation.” (SAINT JOHN PAUL II, Motu Proprio Vitae Mysterium [11 February 1994], 3). The new statutes of the Academy, issued on 18 October 2016, have given renewed impetus to its activities. The goal of the statutes is to make the Academy’s reflection on human life issues ever more attuned to the contemporary scene. The ever-quickening pace of technological and scientific innovation, and the phenomenon of globalization have multiplied interactions between cultures, religions and different fields of study, and among the many dimensions of our human family and the earth, our common home. “There is an urgent need for greater study and discussion of the social effects of this technological development, for the sake of articulating an anthropological vision adequate to this epochal challenge. Yet your expert advice cannot be limited solely to offering solutions to the questions raised by specific ethical, social or legal conflict situations. The proposal of forms of conduct consistent with human dignity involves the theory and practice of science and technology in terms of their overall approach to life, its meaning and its value” (5 October 2017).
Loss of the human dimension and the paradox of “progress”
2. At this moment in time, passion for what is distinctively human, and for the whole human family, encounters serious obstacles. The joys of family relationships and social coexistence appear seriously diminished. Mutual distrust between individuals and peoples is being fed by an inordinate pursuit of self-interest and intense competition that can even turn violent. The gap between concern with one’s own well-being and the prosperity of the larger human family seems to be stretching to the point of complete division. In the Encyclical Laudato Sì, I pointed to the state of emergency existing in our relationship with the history of the earth and its peoples. This alarming situation is the result of the scarce attention paid to the decisive global issue of the unity of the human family and its future. The erosion of this sensitivity, due to worldly forces of conflict and war, is growing worldwide at a much higher rate than that of the production of goods. We are speaking of a real culture – indeed, it would be better to speak of anti-culture – of indifference to the community: hostile to men and women and in league with the arrogance of wealth.
3. This emergency reveals a paradox. How could it happen that, at the very moment of history when available economic and technological resources make it possible for us to care suitably for our common home and our human family, in obedience to God’s command, those same economic and technological resources are creating our most bitter divisions and our worst nightmares? People sense acutely and painfully, albeit often confusedly, the spiritual dejection, or even nihilism, that subordinates life itself to a world and a society dominated by this paradox. The attempt to dull this sense of deep distress by the blind pursuit of material pleasure produces the ennui of a life lacking in a purpose that can satisfy its spiritual yearning. Let us face the fact: men and women in our time are often demoralized and disoriented, bereft of vision. All of us are, to some extent, closed in on ourselves. The financial system and the ideology of consumerism regulate our needs and manipulate our desires, with little concern for beauty of a life in common and for the sustainability of our common home.
4. Christians, hearing the cry of suffering peoples, need to react against the negativity that foments division, indifference and hostility. They must do so not simply for their own sake, but for that of everyone. And they need to do so now, before it is too late. The ecclesial family of disciples – and of all others who seek in that family reasons for hope (cf. 1 Pet 3:15) – has been planted on earth as “a sacrament, a sign and instrument a communion with God and of the unity of the entire human race” (Lumen Gentium, 1). The restoration of each of God’s creatures to the joyful hope of his or her spiritual destiny must become the passionate theme of our preaching. It is urgent that the elderly have greater confidence in their best “dreams” and that the young have “visions” able to sustain them to act boldly in history (cf. Jl 3:1). At the level of culture, our goal must be a new and universal ethical perspective attentive to the themes of creation and human life. We cannot continue down the mistaken path followed in recent decades of allowing humanism to be deconstructed and considered simply as another ideology of the will to power. We must resist such ideologies, however strongly urged by the market and by technology, and choose humanism. The distinctiveness of human life is an absolute good, worthy of being ethically defended, precious for the care of creation as a whole. For humanism not to draw inspiration from the loving act of God would be a contradiction and a scandal. The Church must be the first to rediscover the beauty of this inspiration and make her contribution with renewed enthusiasm.
A difficult task for the Church
5. We acknowledge the difficulties involved in restoring this broader humanistic horizon, even within the Church. First, we can ask frankly if our ecclesial communities today realize and testify to the gravity of this contemporary emergency. Are they seriously focused on the passion and joy of proclaiming God’s love for the dwelling of his children on the earth? Or are they still overly focused on their own problems and on making timid accommodations to an essentially worldly outlook? We can question seriously whether we have done enough as Christians to offer our specific contribution to a vision of humanity capable of upholding the unity of the family of peoples in today’s political and cultural conditions. Or whether we have lost sight of its centrality, putting our ambition for spiritual hegemony over the governance of the secular city, concentrated as it is upon itself and its wealth, ahead of a concern for local communities inspired by the Gospel spirit of hospitality towards the poor and the hopeless.
Building universal fraternity
6. It is time for a new vision aimed at promoting a humanism of fraternity and solidarity between individuals and peoples. We know that the faith and love needed for this covenant draw their power from the mystery of history’s redemption in Jesus Christ, a mystery hidden in God even before the creation of the world (cf. Eph 1:7-10; 3:9-11; Col 1:13-14). We know too that human minds and hearts are not completely closed or insensible to the seeds of faith and the works of this universal fraternity sown by the Gospel of the kingdom of God. We must once again bring this fraternity to the fore. For it is one thing to feel forced to live together, but something entirely different to value the richness and beauty of the seeds of common life needing to be sought out and cultivated. It is one thing to resign oneself to seeing life as a battle against constant foes, but something entirely different to see our human family as a sign of the abundant life of God the Father and the promise of a common destiny redeemed by the infinite love that even now sustains it in being.
7. The ways of the Church all lead to man, as Saint John Paul II solemnly proclaimed in his first encyclical (Redemptor Hominis, 1979). Before him, Saint Paul VI, echoing the teaching of the Council, had stated in his own first encyclical that the Church family extends in concentric circles to all men and women, even to those who consider themselves extraneous to the faith and the worship of God (cf. Ecclesiam Suam, 1964). The Church shelters and protects the signs of grace and mercy that God offers to every human being who comes into this world.
Recognizing the signs of hope
8. In this mission, we are encouraged by signs that God is at work in our time. These signs need to be acknowledged and not overshadowed by certain negative factors. Along these lines, Saint John Paul II pointed to the many efforts to welcome and defend human life, the growing opposition to war and to the death penalty, and a greater concern for the quality of life and ecology. He also indicated as a sign of hope the development of bioethics as “reflection and dialogue – between believers and nonbelievers, as well as between believers of different religions – on ethical problems, even the most fundamental ones, that affect the life of man” (Evangelium Vitae, 27). The scientific community of the Pontifical Academy for Life has demonstrated, over the past twenty-five years, its ability to enter into this dialogue and to offer its own competent and respected contribution. A sign of this is its constant effort to promote and protect human life at every stage of its development, its condemnation of abortion and euthanasia as extremely grave evils that contradict the Spirit of life and plunge us into the anti-culture of death. These efforts must certainly continue, with an eye to emerging issues and challenges that can serve as an opportunity for us to grow in the faith, to understand it more deeply and to communicate it more effectively to the people of our time.
The future of the Academy
9. Before all else, we need to enter into the language and lives of men and women today, making the Gospel message incarnate in their concrete experiences, as the Council demanded. To appreciate the meaning of human life, we should begin with the experience of procreation; this will enable us to avoid reducing life merely to a biological concept or a universal abstraction divorced from relationships and from history. The primordial reality of our “flesh” precedes and makes possible all further consciousness and reflection, preventing us from thinking that we are the source of our own existence. Only after receiving the gift of life, and prior to any intention or decision of our own, can we become aware that we are in fact alive. Life necessarily entails being a child, welcomed and cared for, however inadequately in certain cases. “It thus seems reasonable to see a connection between the care we have received from the beginning of life, that enabled it to grow and develop, and the responsible care we in turn give to others… This precious connection preserves a human and God-given dignity that endures, even despite one’s loss of health, role in society and control over his or her body” (Letter of the Cardinal Secretary of State to the Conference on Palliative Care, 28 February 2018).
10. We know that the threshold of basic respect for human life is being crossed, and brutally at that, not only by instances of individual conduct but also by the effects of societal choices and structures. Business strategies and the pace of technological growth now, as never before, condition biomedical research, educational priorities, investment decisions and the quality of interpersonal relationships. The possibility of directing economic development and scientific progress towards the covenant between man and woman, towards caring for our common humanity and towards the dignity of the human person, surely arises from a love for creation that faith helps us to deepen and illuminate. The prospect of a global bioethics, with a broad vision and a concern for the impact of the environment on life and health, offers a significant opportunity for strengthening the new covenant between the Gospel and creation.
11. Our shared humanity demands a global approach to the questions raised by the dialogue between diverse cultures and societies that, in today’s world, are in increasingly close contact. May the Academy for Life be a place for courageous dialogue in the service of the common good. I encourage you not to be afraid to advance arguments and formulations that can serve as a basis for intercultural and interreligious, as well as interdisciplinary, exchanges. But also to take part in the discussion of human rights, which are central to the search for universally acceptable criteria for decisions. At stake is the understanding and exercise of a justice that demonstrates the essential role of responsibility in the discussion of human rights and about their close correlation with duties, beginning with solidarity with those in greatest need. Pope Benedict XVI has spoken of the importance of “a renewed reflection on howrights presuppose duties, if they are not to become mere licence. Nowadays we are witnessing a grave inconsistency. On the one hand, appeals are made to alleged rights, arbitrary and non-essential in nature, accompanied by the demand that they be recognized and promoted by public structures, while, on the other hand, elementary and basic rights remain unacknowledged and are violated in much of the world”. Among those rights, the Pope emeritus points to “lack of food, drinkable water, basic instruction and elementary health care” (Caritas in Veritate, 43).
12. Another area calling for study is that of the new technologies described as “emergent” and “convergent.” These include information and communication technologies, biotechnologies, nanotechnologies and robotics. Relying on results obtained from physics, genetics and neuroscience, as well as on increasingly powerful computing capabilities, profound interventions on living organisms are now possible. Even the human body is subject to interventions capable of modifying not only its functions and capabilities, but also its ways of relating on personal and societal levels, with the result that it is increasingly exposed to market forces. There is a pressing need, then, to understand these epochal changes and new frontiers in order to determine how to place them at the service of the human person, while respecting and promoting the intrinsic dignity of all. This task is extremely demanding, given its complexity and the unpredictability of future developments; consequently, it requires even greater discernment than usual. We can define this discernment as “a sincere work of conscience, in its effort to know the possible good on the basis of which to engage responsibly in the correct exercise of practical reason” (SYNOD OF BISHOPS ON YOUNG PEOPLE, Final Document [27 October 2018], 109). This process of research and evaluation thus entails the workings of the moral conscience and, for the believer, is part of his or her relationship with the Lord Jesus, in the desire to put on the mind of Christ in our actions and choices (cf. Phil 2:5).
13. The kind of medicine, economy, technology and politics that develop within the modern city of man must also, and above all, remain subject to the judgment rendered by the peripheries of the earth. Indeed, the many extraordinary resources made available to human beings by scientific and technological research could overshadow the joy of fraternal sharing and the beauty of common undertakings, unless they find their meaning in advancing that joy and beauty. We should keep in mind that fraternity remains the unkept promise of modernity. The universal spirit of fraternity that grows by mutual trust – within modern civil society and between peoples and nations – appears much weakened. The strengthening of fraternity, generated in the human family by the worship of God in spirit and truth, is the new frontier of Christianity. Every detail of the life of the body and of the soul, in which the love and redemptive power of the new creation shine forth within us, leads to amazement before the miracle of a resurrection in the very process of occurring (cf. Col 3:1-2). May the Lord grant that we multiply these miracles! May the witness of Saint Francis of Assisi, who saw himself as the brother of every creature on earth and in heaven, inspire us by its perennial relevance. May the Lord prepare you for this new phase of your mission, your lamps filled with the oil of the Spirit to light your path and to guide your steps. How beautiful indeed are the feet of those who bring the joyful proclamation of God’s love for the life of all those who dwell upon our land (cf. Is 52: 7; Rom 10:15).

Judicial Approach on Freedom of Media and Media Trial
What is media?
Media is a collective communication tool which includes publishing, broadcasting and the Internet through several mediums like radio, television, newspaper etc. Among all other duties the main duty of media is to create sense of awareness among general public regarding the democratic and social duties and responsibilities. Media is termed as the “fourth pillar” of democracy and it makes accountable the other three pillars of democracy i.e. “executive, legislature and judiciary”. It is expected that the information provided by media will be impartial and unbiased and media should transmit information to us rather than making personal views or opinions on that subject because media has utter prominence over the minds of public and public get easily influenced by the media streaming. But sometimes media misuses its power by making it a concoction of news, information and own opinions, which is often termed as media trial.[1]
 What does that trial mean?-
According to Oxford English Dictionary, “trial” means, a formal examination of evidence by judge, typically before a jury, in order to decide guilt in a case of criminal or civil proceedings. This definition clearly reflect that media is not eligible enough to conduct a trial.
In this exponentially evolving competitive market, the media often misconstrues and misrepresents the original facts and engages in tabloid journalism to get high target rating point (TRP) and to grab the attention of the public. There are many incidences and high profile cases where media conducts a trial of an accused even before the verdict is passed by the court. Thus it infuriated the atmosphere around, which makes public reckless about their opinions and makes the accused look like guilty in public perception. [2]This is the sole reason why Media trial is not accepted and appreciated in a democratic society.
The Delhi High Court in a suo motu case observed that in our slow judicial system of conducting trials, the accused many a time is subjected to media trial and there is no legal remedy to it. And in such case no one claims any relief to this by “injunction” or for “damages”. Here the Court has no other option to protect the aggrieved individual’s rights and reputation from except” by being more vigilant and pro-active. We know that “Right to fair trial” in a “criminal prosecution” is impliedly mentioned under the “right to life” guaranteed by Article 21 of the Constitution of India. It is proven that if the criminal proceedings are not just and fair, then judicial fairness cannot be achieved.
Fair trial involves independent judges, public hearing, the presumption of innocence, right to counsel and many other factors.[3] The proceedings of a case are expected to be conducted by impartial, independent and competent Judges to ensure the fair trial. Public hearing is also included under the concept of fair trial.
Role of Media in Democratic Society–
As per the Constitution of India “right to know” falls under fundamental principle. Although the freedom of press is not explicitly mentioned anywhere but the Supreme Court of India explained through cases that this “right to know” forms the base of the “freedom of the press”. The Supreme Court declared that the primary objective of the press is to provide all-inclusive and exhaustive information on all kinds of political, social, economic and cultural situations in the country. It also stated that the primary motive of media in a democracy will be promoting transparency.[4]
Media and Freedom of Speech and Expression–
As it is said earlier that freedom of media is not deliberately mentioned anywhere in the Part Ⅲ of the Indian Constitution which contains fundamental rights and freedoms. But it finds its root to Article 19 (1) (a) of the Constitution of India which validates “freedom of speech and expression”.
Why Is Freedom of Media/ Press Not Markedly Stated in Indian Constitution?
To answer this question we have to go back to the earlier debates of the Constituent Assembly, where Dr. B. R. Ambedkar said that Press does not enjoy any special rights which are not devoted to individual citizens to handle and operate in their regular lives. The editor of a press or the manager just exercises the right of the expression, and this the main reason why freedom of press is not specially mentioned in the Constitution.[5]
Freedom of media is not unconditional and absolute and like any other platform, free press is also restricted with the shackled of some limitations stated in Article 19 (2) of the Constitution and those “limits” flow from the “right to privacy”, “right to reputation”, the law of “contempt of court” etc. So, the press cannot use its “freedom of speech and expression” as an excuse to infringe anyone’s privacy and it has to be accountable to Court if it excoriates a person in a libelous manner. In the same way, the press should not indulge in “contempt of court” by taking up parallel trials when a trial is going on before a court of law. Media does not have a clear idea about the rules and regulations of citing evidence and does not know which evidences are enough to declare an accused as a convict.
There is a famous Latin maxim: Audi alteram partem, which means no side of a case will be unheard and both parties will be given a chance to defend themselves but while the media is just concerned about their prime time breaking news, an accused doesn’t get the chance to speak for himself usually and it hampers the principle of natural justice.
Starting from the age of “Bengal Gazette”, “Sambad Koumudi”, “Yugantar”, “Amritabajar Patrika” journalism merged as a noble profession where journalists used to work with braveness, integrity and impartially to serve the nation but in this current era of obtaining highest TRP, accused often goes through mental turmoil, his reputation gets shattered and the whole family suffers with him/her too. And thus the “media trial” has moved to “media verdict” which clearly indicates the misuse of freedom of speech.
An Analysis of The Effect of Media Trial on Some Prominent Cases and Developments In Recent Times
 JESSICA LAL MURDER CASE –
Facts of the case:
On April 29, 1999; a model named Jessica Lal was murdered. On a Thursday night when Jessica Lal was working as a “bartender” at the “Tamarind Court” restaurant situated in Delhi was shot by a gun which resulted in her death. Her friend and an actor Shayan Munshi was also working with her. Manu Sharma, who is the son of Minister Venod Sharma, ordered a drink in that bar, to which Jessica Lal refused. After being offered of Rs. 1000 for a single drink, Jessica refused to serve again. After this, Manu Sharma took out his revolver fired at the ceiling and then at her. She was taken to the hospital immediately but died after some time due to excessive blood loss. Manu Sharma swiftly went out of the bar after shooting Jessica. Though many witnesses pointed Sharma as the culprit, Police could not arrest Manu Sharma immediately because he was hidden with the help of his friends and also destroyed the prime evidence i.e. revolver. But to the great shock, when the trial finally began in the month of August, 1999; the main witnesses Shayan Munshi became hostile. Afterwards other witnesses also turned indifferent to the case by the year 2000 and the trial court released Manu Sharma because the police could not recover the gun used in the act as the main event and the ballistic report was also not submitted.
Role of media:
The media actively sincerely started to publish and broadcast the issue and also directly claimed that Manu Sharma’s father was influencing the police by misusing his power. The High Court of New Delhi in December, 2006, declared Sharma. In the meanwhile, it was revealed by a sting operation conducted by a newspaper “TEHELKA” that Venod Sharma bribed Shayan Munshi to keep them away from the case. The channels also inveigled the common public throughout the country to send texts and mails concerning their views about the trial and media started a parallel trial. Manu Sharma’s defense lawyer Ram Jethmalani argued in the Supreme Court that the media scorned and maligned his client “before and during the proceedings”.[6]
The Court admitted that although the accused was getting influenced due to the remarks of “trial by media” regardless of the fact that the impact was not spreaded to a great extent.[7] The Court also held that in this media is not affecting the accused as such but if this role of media is not regulated and restricted in a positive boundary then it may lead to a serious risk in future causing “contempt of court” where the media will not even set back from forging false evidences.
So the law and governance need to check that the “trial by media” does not act as a hindrance to fair investigation and does not infringe the right of defense of the accused.[8]
NOIDA DOUBLE MURDER CASE
Facts of the case:
This case is well known by another name i.e. Aarushi Talwar murder case where a fourteen-year-old girl Aarushi Talwar and a forty-five-year-old Hemraj Baanjade was murdered and the case is still unsolved. Aarushi was the only child of Dr. Rajesh Talwar and Dr. Nupur Talwar and Hemraj was their domestic worker who lived with them. On 16 May 2008, Aarushi’s parents found her body and the main accused of the event, servant Hemraj who was missing. But on the next day itself, Hemraj was found dead on the terrace. Failure to secure the crime scene brought heavy criticism to the police.
When Hemraj was found dead, the police accused Rajesh Talwar as the prime suspect because they thought that Rajesh has killed both of them after seeing them in a “compromising” position.
Afterwards the case was transferred to the CBI, which initially declared the parents innocent and suspected Krishna Thadarai, the compounder in Rajesh Talwar’s clinic, Rajkumar, the domestic help of Talwar’s friends based on the narcotest but they were also released due to scarcity of evidence. In 2009 again, the case was referred to a new CBI team but they proposed to close it due to the same reason.
Rajesh Talwar was contemplated as the sole suspect due to the circumstantial evidence and the CBI Court declared the parents guilty and they were sentenced to life imprisonment. In 2017, Allahabad High Court acquitted the Talwar couple giving them benefit of doubt. [9]
Role of media:
Afterwards this, the print and electronic media started their outcry by encumbering all the newspapers and channels with the news of Aarushi Talwar’s murder. It was very unfortunate to see the insensitivity of media in reporting this case. The dramatizations in several channels objectified and defamed a dead minor girl and showed simulating objectionable scenes of Aarushi and Hemraj together and Rajesh coming with a golf club and hitting them. All such acts of media completely distraught the reputation of the dead girl, her parents and all those people whose names were mentioned in several shows.[10]
Aggrieved and shocked to see the role played by media here, Dr. Surat Singh, an advocate, filed a PIL and the Supreme Court took this very seriously. The Court reprimanded both print and electronic media to be aware of the prejudicial steps they are taking because it was meddling with the “right to defence of the accused”.
The Supreme Court ordered restraint on “published material which may interfere with the investigation process in respect of all cases.” 104 And this whole event was strongly lambasted by many as “trial by media”.[11]
SUNANDA PUSHKAR DEATH CASE –
Facts of the case:
Sunanda Pushkar, the wife of renowned politician Shashi Tharoor, was found dead in a hotel at Delhi on January 17, 2014. After recovering the body, Delhi police informed Shashi Tharoor about the death. In the initial reports claimed that she committed suicide but later on it was found out that there were also injury marks on the body and ultimately the autopsy report depicted drugs were consumed in high quantity and it resulted into death. By October 2014, the medical team concluded that the death was due to poisoning. After receiving the final report the police filed an FIR for this murder case against an anonymous person on January, 2015.[12]
Role of media:
On the very same day of the death of Sunanda Pushkar, without any delay, the media reached the scene and started its trial and when the Delhi Police Commissioner refused to label Tharoor as the prime suspect, the media declared Shashi Tharoor as the murderer. Some of the media houses were using confidential medical reports and some forged statement made by any distant cousin of Pushkar claiming Tharoor was the murderer. [13]Here the journalists were playing almost every part like that of an autopsy surgeon, cop, scientist, investigator, forensic expert to validate their stance.
In 2017, after suffering from such media trial, Shashi Tharoor filed a defamation suit in Delhi High Court against a well known media house. The Court held that the media houses and journalists are free to state facts and information related to the investigation, maintaining the balance between media trial and freedom of expression but cannot declare Shashi Tharoor to be the murderer.109 The Court also declared that after a criminal investigation starts, the media needs to be more cautious and sensitive and the “press” cannot declare anyone convict or insinuate anyone guilty or make any kind of unsubstantiated claims.[14]
TARUN TEJPAL SEXUAL ASSAULT CASE
Facts of the case:
In 2017, the chief editor of “Tehelka” Mr. Tarun Tejpal was accused of raping by a woman journalist who worked with Tejpal and accused him of sexually assaulting her in an elevator in a five-star hotel in Goa during conference named “Think Fest” which was organized by “Tehelka”. In June 2017, a trial court in Goa restricted the publication of the court proceedings and it held that the proceedings will take place in-camera.
Role of media:
On 28 May 2018, a famous news channel broadcasted CCTV footage in prime time show, clearly depicting Tarun Tejpal and the complainant together. The channel did not comprehend for a sector that this kind of move can infringe the “rights of the accused” or the “privacy of the complainant”. It is one of the various evidences in the trial and to determine any party’s guilt or innocence from that tape was a gross guesswork.
Supreme Court lawyer Rebecca Mammen responded that such intentional violation of some rights and duties by media can manipulate people’s mind negatively and she also stated that Section 327 (2) and (3) of The Code of Criminal Procedure commends to conduct Rape trials in camera. So it shall not be lawful for any person to print or publish any matter in relation to that matter, except with the previous permission of the court of public viewing of the footage.[15]
After a lot of criticism, the media house deleted all the debates, discussions and other online videos from its website. Though all these actions of media made it almost impossible to run the trial smoothly and it caused havoc damage to reputation the parties of the case held in society.  Conclusion
From all the cases discussed above, not only judicial approach is clear but it is also clear that media has huge power to influence the subconscious thinking and perception power of general public and it is clear from the following percentage statistics.
There are over 100,000 publications registered with the Registrar of Newspapers for India with a combined circulation of over 240 million copies in the whole country. And almost 87% of the population of India is connected through electronic media.
We are sure that journalism, as a whole, is not decaying and there are ample chances to direct it in the right way. In the recent past, some big frauds and criminal rackets came to notice due to the efforts of media only. But the media needs to keep in mind that the freedom it is enjoying, has to be utilized for greater public good rather than clouding their perception and thoughts with the target of snagging utmost attention on news items which may not be of public interest, only for the purpose of excelling in the competition to be on the top.

Is Pakistan Headed for Political Crisis?
It’s deja vu all about again. At a time when Pakistan is going by means of a serious economic crisis, the all-impressive armed forces institution has done anything that could create even further political instability and even derail the Imran Khan authorities. Soon after focusing on politicians in the title of anti-corruption or accountability by means of Khan, the army establishment has turned its notice to judges who are not in the excellent books of GHQ.
The Imran Khan governing administration has moved reference or a situation versus Justice Qazi Faez Isa of the Supreme Court and Sindh Higher Court judge KK Agha to the Supreme Judicial Council, proclaiming that they have not declared their abroad homes in their tax returns. Curiously, a reference can be filed by a private person but in this circumstance it was submitted by Pakistani President Arif Alvi, to display that the Khan government is carrying out its anti-corruption drive across the board. To make this impact extra authentic, the military for the initial time publicly sentenced a retired brigadier to death and a retired general to existence imprisonment.
On the encounter of it, it appears a nicely-believed out approach — but it went incorrect since the military has picked the improper judge to focus on. The case is reminiscent of when Pakistani President Typical Pervez Musharaff sacked and then arrested the then-chief justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, which galvanized into a lawyers’ motion, just one of the biggest civil protests in the history of Pakistan, and in the long run led to the downfall of Musharaff. The Justice Isa scenario far too has related portents. Incidentally, both of those Chaudhry  and Isa hail from insurgency-ridden Balochistan province and sent verdicts that have not sat very well with the army.

Lots of believe that that the genuine motive for filing reference in opposition to Isa is that in two situations he has not only pulled up the military services establishment but has also requested it to remain within its constitutional confines.
The first circumstance concerned the Quetta blast in August 2016, in which quite a few distinguished legal professionals killed. Isa, who headed a single fee to look into the blast, in his report passed severe strictures against the Interior Ministry and Inter-Expert services Intelligence (ISI) for not using motion from terror outfits overtly functioning in Pakistan. But his much more damning verdict was on the notorious “Faizabad dharna,” a sit-in protest led by an army-backed militant and fundamentalist outfit identified as Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP). In 2017, the TLP, protesting a modify in electoral legislation, blocked the countrywide highways and indulged in rioting and avenue violence, keeping Pakistani towns to ransom for times. The dharna was choreographed by the ISI to weaken the then-Nawaz Sharif authorities lots of ISI officers ended up viewed distributing funds to protesters.
A two-member Supreme Courtroom bench headed by Justice Isa and Mushir Alam took suo motu see and in its verdict, delivered in 2019, significantly indicted the position of the army, specially the ISI. Just one of the observations built in the verdict mentioned:
Pursuant to the judgment in Air Marshal Asghar Khan’s circumstance the involvement of ISI and of the users of the armed forces in politics, media and other “unlawful activities” need to have stopped. Alternatively when TLP’s dharna members been given hard cash handouts from adult males in uniform, the perception of their involvement attained traction.
The Director Normal of the Inter-Solutions Community Relations (ISPR) has also taken to commenting on political matters. The armed forces, and all companies manned by the staff of the armed forces, such as ISI, Army Intelligence (MI) and ISPR provide Pakistan, and consequently all its citizens.
They should never ever be perceived to guidance a unique political bash, faction or politician. If any staff of the armed forces indulges in any kind of politicking or attempts to manipulate the media he undermines the integrity and professionalism of the armed forces.
The verdict concluded by stating that the governing administration of Pakistan via the Ministry of Defense and the respective chiefs of the military, the navy, and the air drive are directed to initiate motion from the personnel below their command who are identified to have violated their oath.
This obviously raised eyebrows at GHQ in Rawalpindi, as for the initial time in the record of Pakistan this sort of language was made use of from the armed forces, especially the ISI.
Zahid Mukhtar, a senior journalist based in Lahore, instructed India Legal that the language utilized in the verdict has set the armed forces in a serious bind and they ended up pressured to file a assessment petition towards it.
“But as for every regulation the evaluation petition will be read by the same bench,” he defined, “and if it rejects the critique petition,  then it can generate a significant constitutional crisis.”
Mukhtar stated most authorized gurus are of the perspective that the military would like to get Isa out of its way before the evaluation petition will come up for a hearing and  therefore intelligently moved a reference from him through the Khan governing administration.
Though the transfer looked well-choreographed, it did not go as per the script simply because selective leaks about the reference by the military snowballed into key controversy. Isa himself wrote to President Alvi asking him to clarify the reference towards him. Isa added that “selective leaks amount to character assassination, jeopardize his appropriate to owing approach and truthful demo, and undermine the establishment of the judiciary.”
Mohammed Rizwan, a senior Pakistani journalist and a fellow at the Pragmora Institute, Canada, thinks that “This is one particular of the largest blunders committed by the Pakistani Army at a time when the state is going by means of a major economic and governance crisis.”
“The economic climate  is in a shambles,” Rizwan discussed. “The community is reeling below a day-to-working day survival struggle simply because of a sharp hike in selling prices of critical commodities the IMF bailout software will further more irritate these miseries. In such occasions, Pakistan hardly wants another crisis.”
Rizwan explained even though contents of the reference have not been manufactured general public, it is considered that they are about Isa’s wife’s houses in Spain, which the governing administration claims have not been declared in tax returns. Isa’s wife holds twin Spanish and Pakistani citizenship.
“The problem that arises is why now? Justice Isa as a lawyer and then as a decide experienced been submitting his tax returns for many years. If there was any discrepancy he should really have been questioned before. Why now? This genuinely smacks of vendetta,” Rizwan mentioned, adding the military has before attempted a campaign against him when a number of members of the Punjab Bar Council passed a resolution in opposition to him for mocking the Pakistan Military. But that resolution was turned down by many condition bar councils, which includes Punjab’s, which explained these associates do not represent full bar council.
Mukhtar claims targeting Isa can be counter-productive as he is acknowledged in Pakistan for his honesty and integrity. In addition, Isa’s father was a near associate of Pakistan’s founder, Mohammad Ali Jinnah.
The to start with signs of discontent emerged when Added Legal professional Standard Zahid F Ebrahim, son of renowned lawyer and former Supreme Courtroom choose Fakhruddin G Ebrahim, resigned, calling the reference “ a reckless try to tar the track record of unbiased people and … browbeating the judiciary of Pakistan.”
The Pakistan Muslin League (Nawaz), Pakistan Peoples’ Bash, and several bar associations have presently arrive out in the assistance of Isa and threatened to launch a motion against the govt. The Supreme Court Bar Affiliation (SCBA) has even demanded President Arif Alvi’s impeachment for submitting the reference towards Isa. SCBA President Amanullah Kanrani stated that the grievance filed towards Justice Isa was “condemnable.” Recounting Justice Isa’s products and services to the country, the SCBA president said that the SC decide had “exposed” terrorism and additional that “people who do not speak from terrorists are facilitators of terrorism.”
Lawyers’ consultant bodies across the country prepared meetings for following Eid to devise a future strategy. They see the transfer as an exertion to undermine the independence of the judiciary.
The opposition-dominated Senate previous week adopted a resolution demanding the withdrawal of the references filed from the two judges.
Rizwan says the major fallout of this disastrous transfer will be on Prime Minister Imran Khan. “The military services, which was before pulling the strings from the at the rear of, has now appear out in the entrance,” he discussed. “This is the motive why Imran is totally silent on this problem.”
The military services, not happy with Khan’s effectiveness, has imposed its adult men on him in the condition of “advisers,” which has designed a serious rift in the get together. As of now, out of 48 ministers and advisers, only five belong to Imran’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Rizwan explained.
Mukhtar states the accountability or anti-corruption generate has also brought Nawaz Sharif and Asif Ali Zardari collectively and they are not allowing  parliament to operate. Khan’s coalition govt has a wafer-skinny the greater part in the nationwide assembly and two of his big allies — MQM and Balochistan Nationwide Social gathering (Akhtar Mengal team) — are so disappointed with the authorities that they are threatening to give up the coalition.
“Will Justice Isa’s reference culminate into an additional lawyers’ motion, which we saw in the circumstance of Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry? Only time will notify but the class of Pakistan politics may substantially modify following Eid. The following two months will pretty critical for Imran’s survival, which solely relies upon on the 3rd umpire [the military],” Rizwan claimed.

Lalu shifted from bungalow to hospital
Tumblr media
Jailed RJD president Lalu Prasad was on Thursday shifted back to his hospital room from the British-era bungalow within Ranchi’s Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) that allegedly provided him the scope to be an active player in Bihar politics before and after the elections, reports Gaurav Pandey. Lalu’s return to room number 11 of the hospital’s paying ward coincided with allegations that he tried to offer inducements to at least two other senior BJP functionaries over phone, besides former deputy CM Sushil Modi. The ailing RJD president and former Bihar chief minister had been moved to Kelly’s Bungalow – a single-floor bungalow with four bedrooms, two dining spaces, a study, two large verandahs and a kitchen — on August 5 after the ward he was in became part of a Covid-19 treatment centre. Police sources said Lalu was shifted back to the hospital ward after Ranchi DC Chhavi Ranjan asked Birsa Munda jail superintendent Hamid Akhtar if and why the RJD chief was allowed to use a phone during his stay in the bungalow, which is supposed to be the official residence of the RIMS director. “I have asked the jail authorities to submit a clarification at the earliest,” Ranjan said. Akhtar said Lalu had been shifted back to the ward on the recommendation of the team of doctors treating him. “We received a letter from the RIMS medical superintendent on Thursday morning, requesting us to shift the high-class prisoner Lalu Prasad back to the paying ward.” The Jharkhand government had ordered a probe on Wednesday after Sushil Modi released an audio clip purportedly containing Lalu’s voice during the alleged phone call to him. IGP (prisons) Virendra Bhusan said he had asked the DC to initiate action against those responsible for the breach, if found to be true. Convicted in multiple fodder scam cases in December 2017, Lalu was at Birsa Munda central jail in Ranchi for about two months before he was shifted to RIMS on health grounds. He was referred to AIIMS Delhi for some months before being sent back to RIMS in May 2018. The Jharkhand BJP said Lalu being shifted back to the hospital ward meant the allegations against him were true. The party requested the Jharkhand high court to take suo motu cognisance of the alleged violation of jail rules by Lalu under the patronage of the Hemant Soren government.
