Love your distressed wax dolls! Here are my 3 wax girls, respectively a German one, a French one and an English one, all from the mid 1800s. Read an interview with Elisabeth Motschmann. Didn’t know her before. But the interview was impressive. A totally conservative politician of the CDU. She wrote books about how a woman has to stay at home to care for the kids, as they would suffer otherwise. A wife should support her husband in everything he does. And if he cheats, it is her job to make sure the marriage stays intact. She did live that way and by her own accounts it worked for her. All this bullshit about the “traditional” family. She was really a hardcore bullshiter and fought loudly against feminists.

Now though she is a feminist. And a vocal outspoken one. She says her books are wrong and that she was wrong. She fights fiercely against all those men in power that make it difficult for women to have the same chances. She also calls out all those micro-aggressions that many overlook. The way men will talk over women, the way politics are a boy-club, everything. She says women have to be more included everywhere and if necessary the circumstances and rules have to be changed.

It’s just so nice to see a woman who grew out of everything she learned and grew up with. A woman who opened her eyes and really saw the problems, even though she was privileged and didn’t suffer as much as others. And then she decided that as a politician it is her job to change something about it. Her party is still deeply mysogynist and she isn’t afraid to call that out. From that interview she still has views I’d personally deeply disagree with. Yet she gives of the vibes of someone who took the cool-aid for too long and then snapped. She might have failed her generation of women, but she’ll damn well fight for those that come after her. 

People truly can change.

You guys probably know I an a huge nerd for doll history, and today I got one of my grail dolls, an early japanese bjd! These are commonly called ‘Sakura dolls’ and were produced through the 1920-30s. Most have frilly dresses and big bonnets but this girl has a kimono. She also has a fully jointed German style composition body, which is cool because most Sakura dolls were on 5 piece bodies. Japan has a long history of producing sophisticated dolls. Hinge jointed mitsuore dolls were made there since the early 1700’s, and then later motschmann style ichimatsu dolls were the inspiration for ball jointed dolls in Germany in the late 1800’s. Sakura dolls are a blend of both worlds with German style joints and bisque heads, but traditional japanese features.

What's your favorite kind of doll?

I love many kinds of dolls. For my absolute favorites, though, I have to break it down into modern and antique before I can choose.

Modern: ball-jointed dolls. I know “Asian ball-jointed dolls” is the term used to distinguish them from other dolls with that joint system, like the German child doll circa 1910 that is currently on my kitchen table waiting for her clothes to be ironed, but it doesn’t really serve when artists like Marina Bychkova and Lillycat exist in other parts of the world. Maybe “Asian-style ball-jointed dolls?” I love their customization options, posability, and general aesthetics. I also think it’s cool that they’re part of a sort of ongoing conversation between Asian and European (or European-style, rather) dolls. Many doll body types of the 19th century, like the popular Taufling/Motschmann style with limbs of mixed papier-mache and cloth, were copied from Japanese play dolls. Japan, in turn, took influences from French and German dolls of the 1800s to create the first modern-style BJDs in the 1990s. There’s a lot of idea exchange between those two doll worlds, and I think it’s really neat to see that evolve and continue.
