it's a very stupid pet peeve but it kinda bothers me to see Toki's spirit animal being a rabbit, but him taking an eagle-like form in doomstar requiem. same with Skwisgaar, his spirit animal is an owl(?) but in doomstar he's like a centaur? i guess it's ok for aesthetic purposes (the duel is amazing, both visually and musically). i just wish the spirit animal thing was kept consistent and brought up a little more too

when i first watched season 4, i didn't love it because it felt so all over the place, both tonally and storywise. i mean, season 4 felt like it was meant to be very lore-heavy, but the only episodes that actually felt important to the story of that season were "prankklok," "writersklok," "dethcamp," "going downklok," "dethdinner," "breakupklok," and "the church of the black klok." that's 7 story-based episodes in a 12-episode season, but they're placed so sporadically, it's very jarring.

all that being said, with the hindsight of both the doomstar requiem and army of the doomstar, i understand better how the five "filler episodes" of season 4 fit within everyone's character arcs.

"fanklok" - nathan is still so disconnected from the reality of how dating works and what romantic relationships shouldn't look like that he dates a fan (and he's not even initially concerned when he finds out she's allegedly killed a bunch of people, he's more concerned that she's cheating on him). and because this relationship ends so terribly, he doesn't have the opportunity to process it or take away any meaningful lessons on how to have an adult relationship.

"diversityklok" - despite being with dethklok for years now, toki is still isolated from them. even his best attempts to grow close with them fall short. also, dethklok is powerful enough to survive bad faith racism allegations, i guess.

"motherklok" - pickles realizes that his bio family are all garbage people and it doesn't matter that they're his family—they're not good for him, and he has every right to cut them out of his life and instead focus on the family that actually cares about and appreciates him.

"bookklok" - toki stands up to skwisgaar for once in his life, and skwisgaar finally has a reckoning with the fact that his methods of...i think he was trying to encourage toki to improve...weren't helping and he has to change his approach if he still wants to have toki in his life. and he does (we never see skwisgaar aggrandize toki's playing again, though he still does have a teeny bit of that tough love stuff going on).

"dethvanity" - william feels insecure with his place in the band, driving him to extreme measures in an attempt to prove that he's not ugly—which, in this episode, is presented as him trying to prove that he's not a monster.

and then looking at the character arcs of the doomstar requiem and army of the doomstar in tandem, what do we have?

nathan learning that he doesn't have to force relationships to go a certain way and he doesn't have to shut down when they don't go the way he wants; adult relationships are about mutual respect, not obsession.

toki being recognized as a brother in the band, arguably the glue that holds them all together; he is the sunshine rainbows marshmallow man, and the band all need a force like that in their lives to keep them from going off the deep end.

pickles helping to be the maternal figure in the band, the one to be there for everyone; having a family means supporting them when you can and helping them to be the best parts of themselves, and a true family will work past the rocky parts instead of turning cold.

skwisgaar...is also there. i'm kidding, his is just more subtle; learning to admit when he's wrong or when to drop the whole guitar god diva thing, even just briefly, to let others in and recognize their importance.

william learning that his place in the band is more valuable than he could ever recognize; any ugliness or dissent isn't a reflection of who he truly is, it doesn't make him a monster, because he's more than just what the surface shows.

i'm sorry, but it's actually crazy how well this worked out with season 4 having one episode dedicated to subtle character development or character arc progression for each of the dethklok members. i still think the overall pacing of the season is wack, but looking at it like this does help.

but seriously though, how the hell did dethklok manage to not get canceled after "diversityklok" charles what kind of NDAs did you force everyone at that event to sign

to that previous anon's point about pickles' parents: ironically, i think you hit the nail on the head. there's not necessarily a single *reason* seth ended up the golden child, although i'm sure the garage incindent was a contributing factor, but you would think even in a situation as extreme as that their resentment would fade away over time with pickles' equally extreme wealth and fame. i think the episode motherklok in season 4 lays it out clearly: pickles' family will NEVER respect him, no matter how famous he is or how closely he follows their suburban wisconsonite ideals of success and stability. there was never any logic to it to begin with. it's not about something seth did or didn't do to prove himself more worthy of love than pickles, it's about pickles' parents disliking him, more or less irrationally so. you could point to any number of moments as a reason why but i personally interpret those as a sort of post-judgement rationalization for his parents to be like, no, see, it's ok that we're so hard on him because he's a rebel/lazy/good-for-nothing etc.

!!! exactly, his parents suck and i hate them. i hate seth too. more than anything in this world. there’s no true reason they hate pickles, they just fucking do and i think that makes it all the more worse.

got sad today thinking of the parallel between Nathan feeling stuck with the band in aotd and Pickles feeling like he's got nothing if he doesn't have the band in Dethdinner (S4E10).

the fact that (for a moment, at least) the band meant shit to Nathan while for Pickles it was everything he had is uuugh i'm sorry i just Love when two characters are really the two sides of the same coin.

and it's so consistent with their characters too! Nathan has a loving supporting family and he kinda desires a simple happy life ("what regular people have") while Pickles despises his family (because they're assholes to him) and never shows interest in anything outside his present lifestyle with Dethklok.

by Dethdinner Pickles had already cut ties with everyone in his family, the last being his mom who he told to go fuck herself. in that episode (motherklok, S4E4) he's even shown to not even care about career/professional success, all he cares about is people appreciating him. all he wanted was for his mom to stop treating him like shit and finally acknowledge the things that he's doing or at the very least trying to do. and despite Nathan destroying the album and not apologizing as he continued to take the drummer for granted, Pickles kept going and going. only at the very end of the antepenultimate episode of the last season Pickles breaks down and quits. and of course he does. he no longer feels comfortable in the band and is not willing to continue being overlooked. but he says it, very clearly and very sadly: he's got nothing left. the band was everything he had.

and for fuck's sake, he even gives Nathan a chance to make things right. one apology, one single apology and he would go back to the band without a second thought. you see how desperate this man is for the smallest amount of appreciation from the only people left in his life??? yes don't even get me started on how it's visible in SnB II how hurt Pickles is when his ex-bandmates and ex-FRIENDS got a restraining order on him and everything. all this makes it even more painful when he calls Nathan greedy and how he just "takes and takes". yes they are both in the most famous band in the world and all but in Pickles mind Nathan still has so much more than him.

in summary yeah i was happy when Pickles slapped Nathan in aotd and the latter finally acknowledged once again the band's importance to him. good shit.

Fanklok: boring, i love trindle but they go the lamest route with her. Fatphobia too. The gay fanart thing is funny but one good joke doesnt make a good episode

Diversityklok: i dont have to explain this one

Prankklok: the ending scene is cool, but the rest of the episode is very forgettable

Motherklok: boring and doesnt hit as hard as rehabklok did

Bookklok: i dont like skwistok so its just boring and unfunny

Writersklok: crazy ass racism and its not even excusable by it being a “joke” like in diversityklok. Also, its feminist aspect is a total flop

Dethcamp: i actually like this one, but im biased. Looking at it objectively, its fucking insane that they introduce one of the final villains THIS late. And he doesnt even really do anything. Very rushed.

Dethvanity: just boring and weirdly fetishistic. Makes me uncomfortable and not in a good or funny way. Everyone feels very ooc

Going downklok: extremely loud foghorn noise

Dethdinner: literally cant remember a single thing from this one

Breakup klok: cant remember much from this one besides magnus being revealed as a revengencer. Why do it now??? Terrible writing decision.

The church of the black klok: its nice to see everything finally unfold, but its all revealed so quickly that it doesnt really stick with you. The apology scene is cool but knowing how bullshit the love triangle plot is really distracts from how impactful its supposed to be. The mma and cfo fight was cool i guess

When are we going to agree that season 4 was just total shit out of a dogs ass
