Mother Bethel, the first African Methodist Episcopal church and meeting place of the first Colored Convention, was founded by Rev. Richard Allen in 1816. The church has been rebuilt twice, progressing from a blacksmith’s shop to a free-standing building. It has been sitting on the same plot of land in Philadelphia since its charter, making it the longest continuously African American owned piece of land in the United States.

The Mother Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church is a historic church and congregation at 419 South 6th Street in Center City Philadelphia. The congregation, founded in 1794, is the oldest AME congregation in the nation. Its present church, completed in 1890, is the oldest church property in the US to be continuously owned by African Americans. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1972. The church was organized by African-American members of St. George's Methodist Church who walked out due to racial segregation in the worship services. Mother Bethel was one of the first African-American churches in the US, dedicated on July 29, 1794, by Bishop Francis Asbury. On October 12, 1794, Reverend Robert Blackwell announced that the congregation was received in full fellowship in the Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1816 Rev Richard Allen brought together other African American Methodist congregations from the region to organize the new AME Church denomination. He was elected bishop of this denomination. After the American Civil War, its missionaries went to the South to help freedmen and planted many new churches in the region. In 1838, the building was damaged during the riots that followed the destruction of Pennsylvania Hall. Today was amazing and glorious to God! The first parcel of real estate purchased by African Americans was at 6th and Lombard Streets in Philadelphia. A minister and former slave, Richard Allen, purchased it as the home of the first church owned and operated by Blacks in the United States. Today, I had the pleasure of worshiping at that very place, and participating in the liturgy, at the invitation of the church's 52nd pastor, the Rev. Dr. Mark K. Tyler. The experience was beyond words. Mother Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church is more than a museum. It's a vibrant church and activist congregation, engaged in social justice, with a wonderful servant leader pastor! Thank you, God, for that which is done to praise and honor your name!
