MAHARTH PRASAD CHANDRASEKHAR. “ i must know. ”
[ SENDHIL RAMAMURTHY, 50, CIS MAN, HE/HIM ] Welcome to Antioch, MAHARTH PRASAD CHANDRASEKHAR ! Local sources report that you’ve been in town for 2 WEEKS and are known to be CHARMING yet EVASIVE. Others have dredged up rumors that you’re involved in THE VAMPIRE OF ANTIOCH as a SUSPECT, but most know you for your work as the new PROFESSOR OF COMPARATIVE RELIGIONS at ANTIOCH UNIVERSITY.
Character Name. Danish Maharth Prasad Chandrasekhar / ದಾನೀಶ ಮಹಾರ್ಥ ಪ್ರಸಾದ ಚಂದ್ರಶೇಖರ್ Nickname(s). Danu, Som, Maha Face Claim. Sendhil Ramamurthy Birthday. October 27, 1974 Place of birth. Mysuru, Karnataka State, India Sexuality. Fluid Zodiac. Scorpio (Western), Tula/Libra (Vedic), Mīna (Rasi), Purva-Bhadrapada (Nakshatra) MBTI. ESTP-A Moral Alignment. True Neutral Occupation. Professor of Comparative Religions, Adjunct Lecturer on Social Anthropology and Folklore Place of work. Antioch University Subplot affiliation. The Vampire of Antioch 3 positive traits. Affable, Passionate, Social 3 negative traits. Inquisitive, Distractable, Mercurial Languages. Kannada, Tamil, Hindi, and English in his everyday life. Latin, Aramaic, Hebrew, Arabic, and Koine Greek for academic studies. Love language. Expressing — gift-giving, words of affirmation; Receiving — physical touch, words of affirmation
BIOGRAPHY.
! TW: death, religious intolerance, political assassination, references to violence, discrimination.
The fifth child and youngest son of a prominent Mysuru politician and cabinet member, he was born Danish Prasad Chandrasekhar—a proud expression of his Kannadiga and Tamil heritage and his family's Muslim upbringing. Days were filled with the scent of old, well-loved books and fine tea, a quiet peace shared by the big family. The Chandrasekhars were well-off, surrounded by art and culture. They had everything, no, more than everything they needed and never looked outward. Therefore, they were, in essence, cut off from the world around them. Foolishly, Danish believed their way of living would be eternal.
Therefore, the Chandrasekhars never noticed the warning signs. Figuratively spritzed perfume over the smoke that came in the form of angry letters stuffed in mailboxes. And on a hot night in April, when Danish was away at a youth camp, his family and home were all lost to a raging fire set by a fringe group of dissidents following a contested election. Days after the tragedy, the six-year-old was taken in by an aunt on his mother's side. She was a Classics professor at Bangalore University and a practicing Hindu, and she legally changed his name to Maharth in her misguided idea of 'protection.'
Confused about the warring wills of his beloved nation and nursing a trauma he could not understand as a child, Maharth grew up in a religious household but socially became secular as he delved into learning about the various belief systems around him. He'd been gifted as a child, not only in learning languages but also in the connections of his birth, and his acceptance into the University of Oxford was all but guaranteed.
Maharth was a definite scholar, embracing academia with a matchless love that his peers, many talented beyond their years but still impetuous with youth, couldn't understand. Stranger still was Maharth's proclivities. Upon achieving his Master's in Comparative Theology at Oxford and bearing the unofficial title of an academic darling of the presses bearing the acclaimed name of his education, the newly minted professor chose fellowships in schools far from the eyes of the elite. Maybe he'd give a lecture at York or a semester at Harvard, but Maharth was more than content with setting up an office in the backwoods of America one day and the steppes of Siberia the next.
As years passed, Professor Chandrasekhar's disappearances and reappearances became part of his mystery, an appealing asterisk on the famous educator's magnetic persona. So no eyebrows were raised, and questions caught at the helm of one's throat when the eccentric intelligentsia took up a residency at Antioch University in southern Oregon. A man as odd as Maharth would be a perfect fit with a place as infamously strange as Antioch, they thought, oblivious to how correct they'd be in their assumptions.
& THE VAMPIRE OF ANTIOCH.
The victims of the case have been past and present students of Maharth's classes. This information is not public knowledge.
MISC. HEADCANONS.
enjoys fine teas and has shipped in his personal cupboard filled with porcelain teacups and mugs, has a sweet tooth but only indulges on thursdays, is a vegetarian and a half-decent cook but opts for leftovers, currently resides in a short-term rental villa at verdant hills thanks to a generous friend-of-a-friend-of-a-friend-slash-benefactor, annotates all of his books with pen (and thus can never donate them to a library or give them away), and checks his astrology readings weekly.
WANTED CONNECTION. ( ASSAM. ) ANTAGONISTIC/ROMANTIC.
VIBES: Hannibal-lite, cat-and-mouse games, visitations without a warrant, pet names uttered between sips of tea.
[ Though Maharth is the supposed newcomer in town, he has a surprising wealth of knowledge about Antioch, specifically the case of the Vampire of Antioch. Though on the surface, there doesn't seem to be a connection between the professor and the case victims, upon closer inspection, there's something that doesn't add up... your muse decides to investigate — blatantly? covertly? — and Maharth is very willing to cooperate. After all, the pursuit of knowledge is key to one's self-discovery and enlightenment. ]
MID 40s+, catered to anyone interested in the vampire of antioch case. the romance angle is up to chemistry, but the underlying antagonism is the bedrock of this dynamic! — (2/2)
KANG KAI SOO; @kcngkai
ELINAM IKHLAS MANSARAY; @c1andest1ne
WANTED CONNECTION. ( DARJEELING. ) PLATONIC/MENTORSHIP.
VIBES: The Secret History, dark academia, midnight readings of sacred texts on the university lawns.
[ The new professor in town is making waves at Antioch University, with his classes reaching max capacity already in the first week of enrollment. His lectures are a hit with the youth, and some are even vying to be selected for the Professor's exclusive after-hour labs for hands-on, experiential learning. However, it is Maharth who ultimately decides, and whoever he accepts must meet some pre-requisites. ]
21+, students or auditors at Antioch University. — (0/4)
WANTED CONNECTION. ( KAHWAH. ) ANTAGONISTIC.
VIBES: The Departed (2006), sicko-to-sicko communication, laying dead flowers on the grave of your worstie, a chaste kiss on the side of a gun's barrel.
[ Whether it's a historical event or a chance encounter, both your muse and Maharth are aware of each other's secrets, which could shake up the town's status quo if revealed. However, the two are at a standstill since they are both firmly established in their roles, and their social circles only partially overlap. So even if they like to subtly hint at a revelation to the journalist or make a veiled threat, they know they won't get away with it without the other exacting swift vengeance. ]
35+, for anyone into wacky-zany toxicity of mutually assured destruction. — (0/1)
WANTED CONNECTION. ( NOON. ) FLIRTATIONSHIP.
VIBES: All of Us Strangers (2023), memories of the one who got away, finding fractions of the one in other people, tip-toeing dotted boundary lines.
[ It's said that "hurt people hurt hurt people," but can hurt people heal hurt people? Your muse and Maharth hit it off, and neither of them says why, though they know it reminds them of what love could've been. Part maladaptive coping mechanism and part feeling understood and seen for the first time, your muse and Maharth casually date and flirt, seeking escape and comfort with no strings attached. Although ignorance is bliss, and both are willfully ignorant, the town around them refuses to let them bury their heads in the sand. ]
MID 40s+, a doomed relationship considering what happens in this small town. — (1/1)
JOHN WEAVER; @godsunderfoot
WANTED CONNECTION. ( MASALA. ) PLATONIC/FAMILIAL.
VIBES: "wdyn uncle maharth is suspected of being a serial killer??? he got me tix to universal studios in orlando" :((((
[ Your muse has always known Uncle Maharth as a gregarious friend who spoiled you with gifts and praise. In town, Maharth is as friendly as ever, always there to listen to your troubles over sweets and tea. Your muse is aware of rumors going around, and while they doubt their veracity, it's hard to deny that Uncle Maharth is odd—weirder than what you remember as a child. Your muse starts to question if they truly know the man or if nostalgia is tinting their perception. ]
ANY AGE under 35, those who could be related to the Chandrasekhars, or have family in academia who are friends with Maharth. — (1/2?)

it’s nice that FAIR published this right before the announcement of the us withdrawal from afghanistan, which will inevitably cause a cavalcade of “think of the women” pieces from neocon cutouts in the us press:
The vast majority of the world was against the US attack on Afghanistan that followed the 9/11 attacks in 2001. However, the idea had overwhelming support from the US public, including from Democrats. In fact, when Gallup (Brookings, 1/9/20) asked about the occupation in 2019, there was slightly more support for maintaining troops there among Democrats than Republicans—38% vs. 34%—and slightly less support for withdrawing troops (21% vs. 23%).
Media coverage can partially explain this phenomenon, convincing some and at the least providing cover for those in power. This was not a war of aggression, they insisted. They were not simply there to capture Osama bin Laden (whom the Taliban actually offered to hand over); this was a fight to bring freedom to the oppressed women of the country. As First Lady Laura Bush said:
We respect our mothers, our sisters and daughters. Fighting brutality against women and children is not the expression of a specific culture; it is the acceptance of our common humanity—a commitment shared by people of goodwill on every continent…. The fight against terrorism is also a fight for the rights and dignity of women.
Wars are not fought to liberate women (FAIR.org, 7/26/17), and bombing people is never a feminist activity (FAIR.org, 6/28/20). But the New York Times was among the chief architects in constructing the belief in a phantom feminist war. Within weeks of the invasion (12/2/01), it reported on the “joyful return” of women to college campuses, profiling one student who
strode up the steps tentatively at first, her body covered from face to foot by blue cotton. As she neared the door, she flipped the cloth back over her head, revealing round cheeks, dark ringlets of hair and the searching brown eyes of a student.
The over-the-top symbolism was hard to miss: This was a country changed, and all thanks to the invasion.
Time magazine also played heavily on this angle. Six weeks after the invasion (11/26/01), it told readers that “the greatest pageant of mass liberation since the fight for suffrage” was occurring, as “female faces, shy and bright, emerged from the dark cellars,” casting off their veils and symbolically stomping on them. If the implication was not clear enough, it directly told readers “the sight of jubilation was a holiday gift, a reminder of reasons the war was worth fighting beyond those of basic self-defense.”
“How much better will their lives be now?” Time (12/3/01) asked. Not much better, as it turned out.
A few days later, Time‘s cover (12/3/01) featured a portrait of a blonde, light-skinned Afghan woman, with the words, “Lifting the Veil. The shocking story of how the Taliban brutalized the women of Afghanistan. How much better will their lives be now?”
This was representative of a much wider phenomenon. A study by Carol Stabile and Deepa Kumar published in Media, Culture & Society (9/1/05) found that, in 1999, there were 29 US newspaper articles and 37 broadcast TV reports about women’s rights in Afghanistan. Between 2000 and September 11, 2001, those figures were 15 and 33, respectively. However, in the 16 weeks between September 12 and January 1, 2002, Americans were inundated with stories on the subject, with 93 newspaper articles and 628 TV reports on the subject. Once the real objectives of the war were secure, those figures fell off a cliff.
Antiwar messages were largely absent from corporate news coverage. Indeed, as FAIR founder Jeff Cohen noted in his book Cable News Confidential, CNN executives instructed their staff to constantly counter any images of civilian casualties with pro-war messages, even if “it may start sounding rote.” This sort of coverage helped to push 75% of Democratic voters into supporting the ground war.
As reality set in, it became increasingly difficult to pretend women’s rights in Afghanistan were seriously improving. Women still face the same problems as they did before. As a female Afghan member of parliament told Phyllis Bennis of the Institute for Policy Studies (CounterSpin, 2/17/21), women in Afghanistan have three principal enemies:
One is the Taliban. Two is this group of warlords, disguised as a government, that the US supports. And the third is the US occupation…. If you in the West could get the US occupation out, we’d only have two.
However, Time managed to find a way to tug on the heartstrings of left-leaning audiences to support continued occupation. Featuring a shocking image of an 18-year-old local woman who had her ear and nose cut off, a 2010 cover story (8/9/10) asked readers to wonder “what happens if we leave Afghanistan,” the clear implication being the US must stay to prevent further brutality—despite the fact that the woman’s mutilation occurred after eight years of US occupation (Extra!, 10/10).
Vox (3/4/21) asserted that the US occupation of Afghanistan has meant “better rights for women and children” without offering evidence that that is the case.
The trick is still being used to this day. In March, Vox (3/4/21) credulously reported that Joint Chiefs of Staff chair Gen. Mark Milley made an emotional plea to Biden that he must stay in Afghanistan, otherwise women’s rights “will go back to the Stone Age.” It’s so good to know the upper echelons of the military industrial complex are filled with such passionate feminists.
In reality, nearly 20 years of occupation has only led to a situation where zero percent of Afghans considered themselves to be “thriving” while 85% are “suffering,” according to a Gallup poll. Only one in three girls goes to school, let alone university.
And all of this ignores the fact that the US supported radical Islamist groups and their takeover of the country in the first place, a move that drastically reduced women’s rights. Pre-Taliban, half of university students were women, as were 40% of the country’s doctors, 70% of its teachers and 30% of its civil servants—reflecting the reforms of the Soviet-backed government that the US dedicated massive resources to destroying.
Today, in half of the country’s provinces, fewer than 20% of teachers are female (and in many, fewer than 10% are). Only 37% of adolescent girls can read (compared to 66% of boys). Meanwhile, being a female gynecologist is now considered “one of the most dangerous jobs in the world” (New Statesman, 9/24/14). So much for a new golden age.
The “think of the women” trope is far from unique to Afghanistan. In fact, 19th century British imperial propagandists used the plight of Hindu women in India and Muslim women in Egypt as a pretext to invade and conquer those countries. The tactic’s longevity is perhaps testament to its effectiveness.

Hi Sarah! My friend and I are starting a bookclub (as much as you can with two people who aren't pressed for deadlines) and I was wondering if you have any recommendations? (That is if you have time to rec anything!) We're starting off with Deathless and have Fitzgerald next in line somewhere but I def want to try to expand the genres we read and tbh from years of following you, I trust your judgement
I don’t...like giving recommendations? At least not directly, it seems like too much opportunity for getting it wrong. Everybody has their own tastes, after all, and even the best of friends don’t necessarily vibe with what you vibe with. (I’ve experienced this with multiple friends, so I know what I’m talking about.) Truly, one of the reasons that my whole “I’m going to get back into reading for pleasure!” push has been so successful is that I only bother with books that interest me, and stop reading when they fail to catch my attention.
But I’ve now read at least 60 books in 2020, which is approximately 60 more than I’ve read in the years prior, so I’m happy to share that. Below is my list of recent reads, beginning to end, along with a very short review---I keep this list in the notes app on my phone, so they have to be. Where I’ve talked about a book in a post, I’ve tried to link to it.
Peruse, and if something catches your interest I hope you enjoy!
2020 Reading List
Crazy Rich Asians series, Kevin Kwan (here)
Blackwater, Michael McDowell (here; pulpy horror and southern gothic in one novel; come for the monster but stay for the family drama.)
Fire and Hemlock, Diane Wynne Jones (here; weird and thoughtful, in ways I’m still thinking about)
The Secret History, Donna Tartt
Gone Girl, Gillian Flynn (here; loved it! I can see why people glommed onto it)
Swamplandia!, Karen Russell (unfinished, I could not get past the first paragraph; just....no.)
Rules of Scoundrels series, Sarah MacLean (an enjoyable romp through classic romancelandia, though if you read through 4 back to back you realize that MacLean really only writes 1 type of relationship and 1 type of sexual encounter, though I do appreciate insisting that the hero go down first.)
The Bear and the Nightingale, Katherine Arden (here)
Dread Nation, Justine Ireland (great, put it with Stealing Thunder in terms of fun YA fantasy that makes everything less white and Eurocentric)
The Haunting of Hill House, Shirley Jackson (VERY good. haunting good.)
Tell My Horse, Zora Neale Hurston (I read an interesting critique of Hurston that said she stripped a lot of the radicalism out of black stories - these might be an example, or counterexample. I haven't decided yet.)
The Rose MacGregor Drinking and Admiration Society, T. Kingfisher (fun!)
St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves, Karen Russell (some of these short stories are wonderful; however, Swamplandia's inspiration is still unreadable, which is wild.)
17776, Jon Bois (made me cry. deeply human. A triumph of internet storytelling)
The Girl with All the Gifts, M. R. Carey (deeply enjoyable. the ending is a bittersweet kick in the teeth, and I really enjoyed the adults' relationships)
The Door in the Hedge and Other Stories, Robin McKinley (enjoyable, but never really resolved into anything.)
The Hero and the Crown, Robin McKinley (fun, but feels very early fantasy - or maybe I've just read too many of the subsequent knock-offs.)
Mrs. Caliban, Rachel Ingalls (weird little pulp novel.)
All Systems Red, Martha Wells (enjoyable, but I don't get the hype. won't be looking into the series unless opportunity arises.)
A People's History of Chicago, Kevin Coval (made me cry. bought a copy. am still thinking about it.)
The Sol Majestic, Ferrett Steinmetz (charming, a sf novel mostly about fine dining)
House in the Cerulean Sea, TJ Klune (immensely enjoyable read, for all it feels like fic with the serial numbers filed off)
The Au Pair, Emma Rous (not bad, but felt like it wanted to be more than it is)
The Night Tiger, Yangsze Choo (preferred this to Ghost Bride; I enjoy a well-crafted mystery novel and this delivered)
The Left Hand of Darkness, Ursula Le Guin (unfinished, I cannot fucking get into Le Guin and should really stop trying)
The Ghost Bride, Yangsze Choo (enjoyable, but not nearly as fun as Ghost Bride - the romance felt very disjointed, and could have used another round of editing)
Temptation's Darling, Johanna Lindsey (pure, unadulterated id in a romance novel, complete with a girl dressing as a boy to avoid detection)
Social Creature, Tara Isabella Burton (a strange, dark psychological portrait; really made a mark even though I can't quite put my finger on why)
The Girl on the Train, Paula Hawkins (slow at first, but picks up halfway through and builds nicely; a whiff of Gone Girl with the staggered perspectives building together)
Stealing Thunder, Alina Boyden (fun Tortall vibes, but set in Mughal India)
The Traitor Baru Cormorant; The Monster Baru Commorant, The Tyrant Baru Cormorant, Seth Dickinson (LOVE this, so much misery, terrible, ecstatic; more here)
This Is How You Lose the Time War, Amal El-Mohtar, Max Gladstone (epistolary love poetry, vicious and lovely; more here)
The Elementals, Michael McDowell
Gideon the Ninth, Tamsyn Muir (didn't like this one as much as I thought I would; narrator's contemporary voice was so jarring against the stylized world and action sequences read like the novelization for a video game; more here)
Finna, Nino Cipri (a fun little romp through interdimensional Ikea, if on the lighter side)
Magic for Liars, Sarah Gailey (engrossing, even if I could see every plot twist coming from a mile away)
Desdemona and the Deep, C. S. E. Cooney (enjoyed the weirdness & the fae bits, but very light fare)
A Blink of the Screen, Terry Pratchett (admittedly just read this for the Discworld bits)
A Memory Called Empire, Arkady Martine (not as good about politics and colonialism as Baru, but still a powerful book about The Empire, and EXTREMELY cool worldbuilding that manages to be wholly alien and yet never heavily expositional)
Blackfish City, Sam J. Miller (see my post)
Last Werewolf, Glen Duncan (didn't finish, got to to first explicit sex scene and couldn't get any further)
Prosper's Demon, KJ Parker (didn't work for me...felt like a short story that wanted to be fleshed out into a novel)
The Secret Garden, Frances Hodgson Burnett
His Majesty's Dragon, Naomi Novik (extremely fun, even for a reader who doesn't much like Napoleonic stories)
Three Parts Dead, Max Gladstone (fun romp - hard to believe that this is the same author as Time War though you can see glimmers of it in the imagery here)
A Scot in the Dark, Sarah MacLean (palette cleanser, she does write a good romance novel even it's basically the same romance novel over and over)
The Resurrectionist, E. B. Hudspeth (borrowed it on a whim one night, kept feeling like there was something I was supposed to /get/ about it, but never did - though I liked the Mutter Museum parallels)
Stories of Your Life and Others, Ted Chiang (he's a better ideas guy than a writer, though Hell Is The Absence of God made my skin prickle all over)
Gods of Jade and Shadow, Silvia Moreno-Garcia (fun, very much a throwback to my YA days of fairytale retellings, though obviously less European)
Four Roads Cross, Max Gladstone (it turns out I was a LOT more fond of Tara than I initially realized - plus this book had a good Pratchett-esque pacing and reliance on characterization)
Get in Trouble, Kelly Link (reading this after the Chiang was instructive - Link is such a better storyteller, better at prioritizing the human over the concept)
Gods Behaving Badly, Marie Phillips
Soulless; Changeless; Blameless, all by Gail Carriger (this series is basically a romance novel with some fantasy plot thrown in for fun; extremely charming and funny)
Black Leopard, Red Wolf, Marlon James (got about 1/3 of the way through and had to wave the white flag; will try again because I like the plot and the worldbuilding; the tone is just so hard to get through)
Pew, Catherine Lacey (a strange book, I'm still thinking about it; a good Southern book, though)
Nuremberg Diary, GM Gilbert (it took me two months to finish, and was worth it)
River of Teeth, Sarah Gailey (I wanted to like this one a lot more than I actually did; would have made a terrific movie but ultimately was not a great novel. Preferred Magic for Liars.)
Mexican Gothic, Silvia Moreno-Garcia (extremely fun, though more trippy than Gods and the plot didn't work as well for me - though it was very original)
The New Voices of Fantasy, Peter S. Beagle (collected anthology, with some favorites I've read before Ursula Vernon's "Jackalope Wives", "Hungry Daughters of Starving Mothers" "The Husband Stitch"; others that were great new finds "Selkie Stories are for Losers" from Sofia Satamar and "A Kiss With Teeth" from Max Gladstone and "The Philosophers" from Adam Ehrlich Sachs)

many are called, few are chosen
Until I picked up The Razor’s Edge on a sale rack at Moe’s Books in Berkeley, W. Somerset Maugham was an author I’d known only as a name. The book sat on my shelf for a few weeks after I bought it, too. I didn’t feel any particular pull to it, and the list of books I have to read always outstrips my capacity. But when I did finally start it, I read Maugham’s comment that “Even so subtle and careful an observer as Henry James, though he lived in England for forty years, never managed to create an Englishman who was through and through English,” and I knew I was in for something good.
The Razor’s Edge centers on a couple, Laurence Darrell and Isabel Bradley, who break their engagement over their entirely different visions of life. Isabel wants a conventionally wealthy one; Larry, a war veteran who watched a good friend die for his sake, aims to leave society to discover what’s truly meaningful. The narrator, also named Maugham, tracks them as they pass in and out of each other’s life trajectories in the years after. He also tracks others in Isabel and Larry’s orbit: Gray Maturin, son of the businessman Henry Maturin, who also loved Isabel and wins her when Isabel and Larry decide to part ways; and Elliott Templeton, Isabel’s uncle, the brother of her mother Louisa, a dilettante and social butterfly who’s also a friend of Maugham’s.
Elliott often comes off ridiculous or outright irritating for his sociality—say, his determination unto his death to be invited to all the gayest parties in Paris, London, and the French Riviera, far past the time others in his social circle are willing to grant him dignity—and the determination with which he cleaves to the mores of that circle, as when he continually steers Isabel toward Gray because Larry continues to refuse to get a job for reasons Elliott can’t discern, “loafing” and losing himself in books instead. Maugham nevertheless regards Elliott with real affection, because he recognizes that under Elliott’s trivial shell lies real kindness. One pleasure of The Razor’s Edge is just how perceptive Maugham as writer-narrator is, always seeing both sides of everything and everyone. Isabel often seeks Maugham’s counsel both before her split with Larry and after, when he returns from his long sojourns in Europe and India. And while Maugham’s ultimate judgment of her—as lacking tenderness—proves too much for her to take, she admits several times that what he thinks of her means a great deal to her.
Indeed, what to think of Isabel? Initially she’s young, loving, yet clear-eyed. She’s patient with Larry, gently pushing past Elliott and Louisa’s concern with the time he’s taking to commit to her, or to a job, or to anything. As it becomes clear that what Larry’s going through isn’t just a phase, and she won’t get the life she’s used to with him, she breaks the engagement. She’s not without ambivalence about it—as she tells Maugham, “I know that I’m not playing the star part in this.” She also knows she’s the one who’d suffer for Larry’s genius. What’s more, as Maugham points out, there’s no guarantee Larry’s desires will amount to anything:
Years ago, when I was young, I knew a man who was a doctor, and not a bad one either, but he didn’t practice. He spent years burrowing away at the library of the British Museum and at long intervals produced a huge pseudo-scientific, pseudo-philosophical book that nobody read and that he had to publish at his own expense. He wrote four or five of them before he died and they were absolutely worthless. He had a son who wanted to go into the army, but there was no money to send him to Sandhurst, so he had to enlist. He was killed in the war. He had a daughter too. She was very pretty and I was rather taken with her. She went on the stage, but she had no talent and she traipsed around the provinces paying small parts in second-rate companies at a miserable salary. His wife, after years of dreary, sordid drudgery, broke down in health and the girl had to come home and nurse her and take on the drudgery her mother no longer had the strength for. Wasted, thwarted lives and all to no purpose. It’s a toss-up when you decide to leave the beaten track. Many are called, but few are chosen.
That last line haunts me. As a writer, I feel like one of the called. I fear I’m not one of the chosen.
And next to that, wouldn’t it be wiser to be an Isabel. Who does get what she wants when she marries Gray Maturin: the chance to travel, the chance to enjoy herself, children and a stable life. At least until the depression hits and Gray loses everything.
The years pass. In time, the five—Maugham, Isabel, Gray, Larry, and Elliott—reconnect in Paris. Elliott lives there; Isabel and Gray join him for a time to rally their funds and health; Maugham and Larry arrive at their bachelors’ leisure. Once there, the group runs into Sophie Macdonald, a childhood friend of Isabel, Larry, and Gray who, having lost her husband and child, has become utterly dissipated. Larry becomes determined to save Sophie. Isabel feels nothing but contempt for her, and fear Larry will be ruined.
It’s as though as Sophie’s star rises in Larry’s universe, Isabel’s star in the novel falls. She’s become crude. When she originally rejected Larry, it was because she simply wanted a conventional life, not because she felt contempt for those who didn’t lead such lives—in fact, she knew then Larry was one to admire. As an adult, on the other hand, she goes so far as to set a bottle of Polish liquor Elliott’s gifted her out in the drawing room specifically to tempt Sophie into drinking and falling back into her old life, out of Larry’s. Conventional culture coarsens people. It takes away their ability to make their own choices and to let others make theirs. You go so far into the role you play, like high-society wife, that you lose all self-awareness. Indeed, you have to bury any awareness of the nobler life to subsist in your social one. And Isabel’s has been buried so far she can’t see the spiritual valence of Larry’s attachment to Sophie. She’s no longer willing to dignify his desire or his choice. She can see only the social ruin—never mind that Larry doesn’t really have any social capital to speak of at this point; there’s no ruin to defend against. Whatever tenderness was once in her—whatever human feeling and spiritual sensitivity—is gone.
The sensitivity remains in Larry. Who’s something of a saint figure, if less like Christ than the stereotype of the Eastern sage that you could write about in Maugham’s day. As Maugham puts it, he’s possessed of a passion for self-sacrifice that “whirls the victim to destruction in the highest affirmation of his personality.”
He’s also, as you might expect, a figure of doubt. The question that occupies him is “a basic question, but an eternal one: “If an all-good and all-powerful God created the world, why did He create evil?” Why did God allow a war that took his friends’ lives; why did God create humans with spiritual voids that drive them as Larry himself is driven? And if God made humans to be capable of sin, like Sophie with her drinking, why does he fault them for demonstrating that capacity?
After the conclusion of the Sophie Macdonald affair, the drama of Larry and Isabel’s relationship falls away; the question of God becomes the novel’s most pressing. Maugham also tags the chapter in which he and Larry have their deepest conversation about God as nonessential—and indeed the novel could stand fine without it. But it’s Razor’s secret heart. Larry’s ultimate argument in that chapter, as he reveals to Maugham what happened during his five years in India, is:
In the West, the structures of faith are elaborate (e.g., the Catholic church) and faith itself is tortured and ambivalent. In the East—again, speaking broadly—faith is lived; its structures are woven into daily life. Essentially, history’s spiral spins, over and over, into all time; we’re caught up, we live and die, in its churn. We don’t contemplate the churn until something like war brings us face to face with its reality. When you’re confronted by the nature of life in this way, you can either fashion a philosophy in which there is a God in charge of it all and fear of this God and obedience to Him give you a door out of this world and into Heaven. Or you can live your life in such a way that you might be able to renounce earthly life and exit the spiral of reincarnation or repetition for all time.
It’s an age-old opposition, nothing new, and Larry’s foray into Hinduism does feel like an orientalist answer to the question of occidental faith. But I think it’s hard to deny the appeal that non-duality—the idea that the mind and the body, the self and the world that surrounds it, are not separate; that all that is is “awareness”—can have for philosophically dualist societies and belief systems predicated upon Cartesian conceptualizations of the mind and body: the materialist idea of a concrete, distinct self tied to each body, which interacts with a world outside of it, that persists despite it.
Larry’s contention seems to be that in non-dual traditions, questions like “why did God create evil, or make evil possible?” can be answered—the answer being that there is no God who creates this evil or can save you from an original sin that’s intrinsic to your being, and nor is there any such sin. There is simply an Absolute from which the stuff that is your eternal soul is descended, to live out temporal loops of incarnation—as many as it takes to live a life free of misdeeds. And it falls upon you, in your soul’s current manifestation, to live in such a way that you might earn an exit from these loops—a return to the Absolute.
How do I feel about Larry’s argument? I can imagine that the idea that no evil really exists is comforting when you’ve witnessed something that’s otherwise entirely aberrant, senseless, unconscionable, like a person you love being blown to bits in front of you. Even if the other possible answer—that evil exists, and you’ve just witnessed it—seems just as plausible to me.
And while I’m sympathetic to Larry’s desire for truth. I don’t know that non-duality is where I’d find it. Or traditional religion, for that matter. I don’t consider the question of sin in terms of the state of one’s soul pressing. I consider the question of sin in terms of wrongs and harm done to others pressing. And something about the former way of thought feels a little self-absorbed to me—as though you’re interested in spiritual truth because of what it might mean for you, as opposed to what it might help you do, how it might help you minimize the harm to others that you might commit if you didn’t think in terms of right or wrong and about what’s ethical and what’s not.
But I say all this as a product of my particular historical moment. As I read The Razor’s Edge, my own distance from essential questions of goodness and evil felt very clear. I don’t know that I could imagine a Larry Durrell type living in 2019. I came to wonder if living in late-capitalist liberal democracy, post-religion, has robbed me of a capacity for deep moral or spiritual investigation like Maugham’s (or Graham Greene’s, another very moral writer I’ve read quite a bit of lately). After all, I too live in interesting times, times whose questions are full of moral stakes. (E.g., you live in a world that’s capable of separating migrant children from their families, keeping people who are blameless for their own conditions penned in arbitrary borders and denying them the right to live where they please based on the contingent fact of their citizenship. Do you participate in this world? How?) But—and I realize how self-indulgent this sounds; what the times I live in mean for my art is hardly the most relevant question I ought to be asking about them—I don’t seem able to write anything of real depth about the times in which I live. Let alone come up with substantive answers to any of my moral questions.
After I finished this novel, I came to think: maybe religion gives you the terms for a moral understanding of the world. And when you’re shaped by conditions that don’t mandate a faith—when the structures of your world are entirely liberal-democratic, or commercial, and not moral in any way—and you live a pretty safely bourgeois life, and you are not driven through an experience, like the war that Larry Durrell survives, that sends cracks through those conditions and reveals how contingent they are and the depths of human suffering that their prosperity can obscure—you become complacent. No questions like the ones that inform this novel ever occur to you.
Or rather, by the time that the things you’ve gotten used to break down, revealing the questions that you thought the End of History had rendered moot, you’re left with no sense of what the answers to those questions might be, and only the most unfit tools to find them.

Jervis Tetch Diaries
( Hi guys, this is something a little bit different, I've decided to post some of the chapters of my Jervis Tetch fan fiction based on my version of the sweet little cinnamon roll in a AU universe roleplay I write in, I hope you guys enjoy the first chapter and let me know what you think 😊 )
Jervis Tetch Diary 1
RIP Mum and Dad...
The summer of somewhere in the 1980's, thats when it happened...that was the day when I was born in the heat of the Indian sun. My parents were not Indian but British/ American. My mother, born and raised in the old money roots of London while my father was new money. From that oh so delightful city of Gotham which was soon to be my home...and my prison. My parents were in India for specific purposes, they were both scientists of the highest order. recommended and noticed by their genius and intellect when it comes to technology and physics along with key elements of biology and chemistry. But their intellect could not compare to how loving and kind hearted they were when I was in their company. Oh how gentle and sweet they were to me, loving me 24/7 making me warm and happy and it wasn't the sun making me warm most of the time . Ah yes, I had such a cherished life in India, seven birthdays and seven wonderful Christmases with my parents in our little home and I distinctly remember the giant bonsai tree on the side of our garden where the tropical birds sang and the lizards performed their mating call. My fondest memories of my childhood was sitting in that tree reading the book which would later leave a mark on me for all eternity in a good form and in a bad form...and that book...was Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. My mother gave it to me as a gift for my sixth birthday and the memories I had with that book I shall never forget. I felt like I was owning the keys for my imagination to be set free into the world which was full of darkness and despair from the grime and sort of criminals, gangsters and the corrupted people in society...just thinking about it makes me laugh at the irony of it all. But back to the point, seven years of wonderful memories...and now your probably wondering, Jervis, why did you only spend seven years with these happy memories and ever so loving parents...well my dear sweet reader of my diary I shall tell you. It's because on the winter when I was seven years old...my parents had been burnt.
Yes you heard me right my parents were burnt to their deaths...and the memory still scars me after twenty years and it was the day that would haunt my dreams...forever. It all started on that very day in winter when I was about to go to bed. But before I did I went to to wish my parents good night. So I went down to my parents lab, which was filled with the most adorable little animals which were used for humane experiments and we make sure that they are properly taken care of and not given any toxic chemicals. Like my dear father used to say....'I would never dare hurt an animal, not even a fly, as it is simply cruel I tell you, for you see Jervis my boy, animals are part of our education, without them we would never of gotten mythical creatures like the unicorn or the mermaid', my father always was a wise man. Anyway they were about to shut down the lab before I came in extremely tired and hugging my prized bunny toy which I have had since the day I was born and I still keep it to this very day. My father, Charles Alister Tetch was not only smart but a gentle soul and showed only but kindness to his family and friends along with my dear sweet mother Louise Tetch...they were completely innocent people I tell you...innocent. That night they gently hugged me and gave me sweet kisses upon my face with tender loving care and passionate affection that every parent should have for their child especially at a young age. I adored my life that I was given and I could not be more grateful that God had given me to such smart kind hearted parents...they would be ashamed of me now if they saw me today and what I had become. After hugs and kisses they tucked me into bed and wished me good night as well and blessed me with sweet dreams of Wonderland. However me being a cheeky and mischievous lad I decided to sneak out of bed and climb onto the bonsai tree to read chapter 7 of Alice in Wonderland. That infamous scene with The Mad Hatter's tea party...that scene would doom me for the rest of my wretched life...but nothing could compare to what was about to happen next. When reading my prized book I thought I heard a noise like glass hitting the ground, I got off the tree to check for the noise incase one of the lab animals was injured or had gotten out of its cage and started knocking over test tubes...if only it had been test tubes knocking over.
But when I entered my little home in the warmth of India,...it was about to become hellishly hot as the entire lab...had been set on fire with a nightmare of a blaze but what shocked me even more was what I saw on the ground. There...lying on the cold chemically stained floor...was my mother and father...with a bullet in their heads. As a child it was the most horrifying sight, the sort of sight which shall mentally scar for all eternity..like it did for young Bruce Wayne who has been hiding ever in his mansion in Gotham City. But there they were...dead, not moving...gone..and I was not with them...I ran out the room just before the massive explosion occurred...and I laid there on the grass and snow...a little boy watching his happiness crumble down before him...They took me back to Gotham in an open eyed coma like state with emptiness and darkness within my once crystal blue eyes...I had nobody left...except for one. The family lawyer Carlos Radcliffe was my only hope at this point as the court were tempted to send me to Arkham Asylum believing I was the culprit but luckily my lawyer defended my case while I was traumatised and I was to be put into the care of St Petersworth's boarding school for boys where I was to be educated to be the most sophisticated young gentleman in Gotham and to rival that of Bruce Wayne and Oswald Cobblepot at the same time...Three of the most wealthiest families now in the same city, three heirs of their fortune and I had no idea what to do with my newly earned fortunes at the time so I kept it safe in my account and made sure no one will ever touch it as it was safe and sound within the family bank, no greedy swine would remove it from my fundings. But money didn't matter...my parents were gone and I felt so alone during the rest of my years within the walls of St Petersworth's...I will explain my time in there in a moment my dear friends do not worry about that. But I felt miserable on this world, I had no friends my age that I could turn to for support as I was a freak to them, a weirdo, a lunatic of society to all of them....mad as a hatter to everyone in Gotham.

The
Egsa (old english | scary)
Spell (old english | news)
Ok.
The Biblical Patriarch Abraham (called the father of nations) had one wife and one sister- the same person- and several concubines and mistresses- each of whom begot him many children. Now, when these children grew up- he gifted them each with magical secrets and one by one sent them east as magi to gather initiates for the creation of Mystery Schools.
We know that, with the exception of Issac, the sons and grandsons of Abraham made their way through India, and even further into the Middle East where Abraham is credited as being the progenitor of Islam as is described in the Quran, though the religion did not officially begin until Mohammeds involvement many centuries after Abraham sent his sons away.
So, when during the birth of the Nazari
in Bethlehem he was visited by '3 foreign Magi from the East,' it takes a special significance in my mind that itches and begs to be tussed out.
That is why I am writing this.
It should be noted that there was never any mention in the original texts of exactly how many Magi attended his birth. It is thought that the authors were drunk. No. It is thought that the authors simply assumed that since there were three gifts..there must have been 3 magi to deliver them. Probably wrong. A supposed eye witness account of the magis journey popped up 300 years after the fact claiming that there were 12 or more traveling in the party.
This lends credence to the idea that this was an entire magical order (or at least its senior brethren;) that this order was almost certainly seeded by one of Abrahams sons or grandsons; and that they traveled not only to attend the Nazaris birth but also to examine the god-child and make sure it was of satisfactory health and temperament. The mother would have been looked at by a normal physician.
There are so many thing in just these two stories alone that I want to share with everybody. Things that would make a Southern Baptist stone my ass to death. Things that would make a Methodist very seriously consider leaving the church to worship Satan.
People just don't realize how fragmented the testaments have become. It was intended as a living document that existed in space but outside of time. There was a reason that the original Hebrew texts contained no punctuation and no vowels..at least until the Masoretes got ahold of it. Despite the scores of Southern parishioners taking absolutely everything they read in the Bible at face value- much of what is taken as 'Gospel Truth' has been either misunderstood, mistaken or even simply mistranslated. It isn't conjecture at this point.
Take the following example:
Go to Google translate and type in
"I am a peaceful man."
Now translate from English to Latin to Greek to Hebrew to Greek to Latin and then back to English again. (Almost exactly how we arrived at our most modern Biblical translation minue English at the begining..by the way)
Surprise, surprise. It now reads
"I have an airplane ticket."
The Nazari himself anticipated this ridiculous game of telephone, which is why he communicated his most important messages with parables. Because parables require deeper thought from the listener, deeper thought from the reader and thus deeper thought from the translator as well.
Moving on..
As mentioned in the Infancy Gospel of Thomas:
II. 1 This little child Jesus when he was five years old was playing at the ford of a brook / and he gathered together the waters that flowed there into pools and made them straightway clean [unintelligible] commanded them by his word alone.
2 And having made soft clay, he fashioned thereof twelve sparrows and nd it was the Sabbath when he did these things [or made them,] / and there were also many other little children playing with him.
3 And a certain Jew when he saw what Jesus did, making things upon the Sabbath day, departed straightway and told his father:
"Lo, thy child is at the brook, and he hath taken clay and fashioned twelve little birds. He hath polluted the Sabbath day."
4 And Joseph came to the place and saw: and cried out to him, saying "Wherefore doest thou these things on the Sabbath, which it is not lawful to do?"
So Jesus clapped his hands together and cried out to the sparrows and said to them: Go! and the sparrows took their flight and went away chirping.
5 And when the Jews saw it they were amazed, and departed and told their chief men that which they had seen Jesus do.
And Jesus smirked. [I added that last part in]
!! Astonishingly, at only 5 years of age the Nazari was demonstrating not only a latent understanding of magical systems but also an ability to apply that system to a PHYSICAL ALTERATION OF THE NATURAL WORLD. He was also showing signs of disdain towards the human beings for whom he had been created to protect. And that coupled with observations of the boys power had everyone in town, not least of all "his parents" deeply, deeply terrified and concerned.
Here again from the Infancy Gospel:
1 After that again he went through the village, and a child ran and accidentily dashed against his shoulder. And Jesus was provoked. He said "Thou shalt not finish thy course." And immediatelhetbe boy who provoked him fell dead at the Nazari's feet. and when some of the onlookers saw what he had done they wrenched at their garmets and said
"From whence was this creature born that every word of his is a great work or a miracle or an act of nature."
And then the parents of the boy he had slain marched unto Joseph, and blamed him, saying: "Thou who has such a child cannot dwell with us in this village unless he is taught to heal and not kill and to bless and not curse. For if he remains as is, he he will slayeth all our children / and then what of us?"
1 Immediately Joseph called the young child apart and admonished him, saying:
"Why are you doing these things? Why do you inflict such unforgivable suffering upon these people? So that they hate us and persecute us? Is this what you wish? But Jesus said,
"I know that these words are not your own (!!??) nevertheless for your sake and for the sake of suffering I will hold my peace.
"But them" Jesus pointed to the parents of the young boy he had slain."Them that accused me.. Them shall bear the weight of their punishment, too."
And straightway they that accused him became blind / and they began to moan and to scream in confused horror until little else could be heard in the town.
2 And they that saw it became even more afraid and even more perplexed / and said that every word which he spake whether it were good or bad, was a deed, or a marvel. So they began to very carefully walk away / pretending not to hear the anguish of their neighbors.
And when he saw what the Nazari had done / he arose and took hold upon his ear and wrung it purple. 3 And the young child was wroth and said unto him:
11l
O. "It sufficeth them to seek but not to find, and verily thou hast done unwisely: Don't you know that I am not my own? Vex me not."
I know what you're all thinking. I spent a year of my life going over this document and asking every difficult question that I could think of. So let me save you some time..
1. The document is authentic. The narrative account matches those of others which which say the same thing in their own texts. Even with evidence, perhaps out of fear, I might have dismissed this manuscript if it weren't for similarly described behaviors by another, far older 'Son of God(s); Gilgamesh, King of Uruk- The (weirdly) 3/4 God King of Mesopotamian Sumeria. If you'll recall, Gilgamesh would routinely rape women in the streets in from of their Fathers and Brothers. He once enslaved a quarter of HIS OWN people....HIS OWN PEOPLE...to build ziggurauts in honor of the Gods- a pantheon to which he technically belonged.
Both Gilgamesh and the Nazari began their brief human existences as supremacists. Their distaste for humanity was oozing off of every word they spoke and off of every action they took. And both of them had to be 'corrected;' Gilgamesh by the Gods (through the creation of Enki-Du, a bizarre man-animal hybrid who challenged Gilgamesh to fight after fight until his rage and hatred subsided.) And the Nazari by his human keepers...though not NEARLY as successfully as Gilgamesh. Here is a link to something I wrote about Gilgamesh a few months ago. It may help to clarify whats happening here in case I miss something.

The Gospl continues:
VI. 1 Now a certain teacher, Zacchaeus by name, stood there and he heard in part when Jesus said these things to his father and he marvelled greatly that being a young child he spake such matters. 2 And after a few days he came near unto Joseph and said unto him: Thou hast a wise child, and he hath understanding. Come, deliver him to me that he may learn letters. And I will teach him with the letters all knowledge and that he salute all the elders and honour them as grandfathers and fathers, and love them of his own years.
"And Joseph chuckled." Is what I would have written, because..
3 And he told him all the letters from Alpha even to Omega clearly, with much questioning. But Jesus looked upon Zacchaeus the teacher and saith unto him: Thou that knowest not the Alpha according to its nature, how canst thou teach others the Beta? thou hypocrite, first, if thou knowest it, teach the Alpha, and then will we believe thee concerning the Beta. Then began he to confound the mouth of the teacher concerning the first letter, and he could not prevail to answer him. 4 And in the hearing of many the young child saith to Zacchaeus: Hear, O teacher, the ordinance of the first letter and pay heed to this, how that it hath [what follows is really unintelligible, but it disturbingly picks up..]
VII. 1 Now when Zacchaeus the teacher heard such and then so many allegories of the first letter spoken by the young child, he was perplexed at his answer and his instruction being so great, and said to them that were gathered there:
Woe is me, wretch that I am, I am confounded! I have brought shame to myself by drawing to me this young child.
2 THIS CHILD IS NOT EARTHLY BORN: this is one that can tame even fire: this is one begotten before the making of the world!
WHAT BELLY BORE THIS? what womb nurtured it? Woe is me, He putteth me from my sense, I cannot follow his understanding. I have deceived myself!
Goddamn. GODDAMN. I mean what the fuck, man? I remember reading this for the first time and simultaneously remembering what the older version of this creature said to his people in Mathew 10:34;
'Do not assume that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.'
~shudder~
I'll explain how truly terrifying that statement really is in part 2.

This is what happens when I'm sad, I think, I write, I cry, I contemplate things I shouldn't, and then I write some more.
It is also what happens when @whimsicaldragonette and I have a back and forth about writing ideas. This may be the first one I'm publishing though. (If it is, I am happy it was.)
Trigger warnings: Slytherins will plot, and for some that may include murder, for others safety, for others forgiveness. There is also drinking (An unhealthy form of coping, but the kickstart non-the-less). Mentions of abuse (Non-graphic, one sentence). Allusions to sexual-assault (Non-graphic one sentence. You can just skip the second paragraph).
"I imagine one of the reasons people cling to their hate so stubbornly is because they sense, once hate is gone, they will be forced to deal with pain. - James Baldwin"
When Draco walked into the common room after Easter break he immediately grabbed a few bottles of fire-whiskey and joined the circle of despondent Slytherins sitting by one of the fireplaces in various forms of dismay. Opening a bottle and drinking from it passing it to their left became a reflex as the Slytherins. When Blaise joined bringing his own bottle to pass around is when things started getting interesting.
"I don't want to be on this side of the war," Draco said as he passed the bottle Blaise had gotten as a gift from his mother to Pansy. "My father is hitting my mum again. I wish he would just, stop breathing. " Theo drank from the bottle he'd been handed and passed it to Blaise. "I know a spell for that. Sufoxis. Comes in handy when your uncle tries to sneak in a strapping young man's rooms." Blaise pulled Theo in close as he drank. "Mother gave me this to share with my closest friends so that I can blackmail them if necessary, and yet I am telling them that I was created with a ritual between her and my other mother. Irony." One by one the Slytherins shared secrets, and plans, younger years joining in, bringing snacks, and treats, and soups, though only the sober Slytherins had the soup.
Eventually, there was a pile of Slytherin children passed out in front of the fire. These children, because that's what they were, should probably be woken up, and sent to their rooms, but Severus too was tired, tired of this war, of bad decisions, and wrong-sides, and dark lords, and genocide. Tired of being evil, tired of being the bad guy, just infinitely tired. So he pulled his cloak tight and left the Slytherins to sort themselves for once. Though before he left the room he said: "Set it right my children." Because they are the future, and at this point, the only ones who can do anything to save it.
To heavy a burden to ask children to shoulder he has figured out on his own, but perhaps, together, they will overcome it. A man can hope.
---
"Fuck." Said at least three Slytherins who'd woken up with headaches, tangled up in blankets, and limbs. Slowly everyone woke up, to see plans they'd put together still in front of them, candy wrappers thrown about, cold bowls of soup, empty bottles of whatever on their side. The Slytherins took turns showering, handing out hangover cures, and changing clothes coming downstairs to see everything except their plans gone back to whence it came and whatnot.
"Hey, why don't we actually put some of these to work," Draco said not long later, "I mean, none of us are happy with where we are right?" Nods from various Slytherins, murmurs of agreement from the rest. And thus marks the third time an entire house skipped out on classes.
---
Many months later
---
"The DA got the food, and water, the children are fine, everyone is doing well on the lesson plans, you were right to mention dark spells Pans, thank you." Draco handed some papers to look over to Theo and Adrian, still walking around checking on everyone, "Good news my friends, we've got word from them, and the diadem has been secured." Cheers erupted all around, "Bad news," Groans erupted all around, and Draco smirked a little. "We're still behind in the Harry trap-" Pansy cut him off. "It's not a trap if it helps him Draak." Draco rolled his eyes. "It is if it traps him, now shush. Has anyone got anything new to add on that front?"
The Slytherins had heard about the Horcruxes from their parents and found that destroying them was moderately easy depending on how desperate, or talented one was. "Yes Vin, what've you got?" Vincent Crabbe had been writing his reluctant death eater da about Horcruxes as the only adult the children knew they could trust. After all, mister Crabbe had always taken the pureblood and halfblood children in if they needed a hand, they know he's trustworthy.
"My da said fiendfyre would definitely destroy a Horcrux, and he told me the instructions to start it, but he hasn't found the instructions to stop it yet so that's a good last resort. My da said we should look into goblin rituals, they have cleansing things that young wizards and witches are given to make sure the child is unburdened by foreign magics." Draco nodded and wrote that down on the chalkboard.
---
Sammy, a second-year Slytherin from India had a cousin who spoke parseltongue record a few words so that they could use the chamber of secrets, which they shortly found extended to include a living-quarter big enough to house their entire house (Hogwarts-magic is suspected.) study included.
The chamber had been cleaned up, fixed in some places, and reopened, they'd slowly smuggled as many people in as they could, though the general consensus was that they were hidden in the Room of Requirement. An understandable, but incorrect assumption.
---
On the day of the battle every fourth year and under were taken to the chamber, and when Harry showed up to see several Slytherins trying to escort them down there he stepped in wand raised at the adults in their way, quickly stopping them in their tracks. "Thanks, Potter. Think you could hiss this open? We lost our recording." Remembering that Malfoy had saved his life not long ago he nodded and hissed open to the faucet. He waited around to close the sink after Malfoy, but Malfoy wasn't going in. "Aren't you going in?" Malfoy shook his head and said "Come on, you've got that sword that kills the Horcuxes right because we found the diadem." Harry followed as he is wont to do. 'Pansy was right he really does let his guard down around me. Huh.'
As they walked, quickly and silently, many students waved, Slytherins, Hufflepuffs, Gryffindors, Ravenclaws, it didn't seem to matter, and not for the first time Harry wondered what exactly had been happening while he was gone that had Ginny kissing Blaise before charging to battle, he was surprisingly unhurt by that, though he was upset she didn't even say hi.
When they arrived in the Room it was nearly empty, and there was a waterfall. "Come on Harry this way." Malfoy pulled the shocked Harry to the waterfall careful not to get wet. 'Course he still cares what he looks like the ponce, I bet his robe will be in tatters by nights end.' When Harry stopped under the waterfall he felt tired, so bone tired, it was like the adrenaline that had been ushing him before had drained from him.
"I'm sorry Harry but, I can't ask you to die for us," Malfoy said as he carefully used his wand, a backup from his father, to lay him down under the water. "Please stand back Heir Malfoy." Draco stood back near the edges of the room as the goblin began the ritual. 'Please let this work.'
---
It worked, but Harry still slept for seven hours as expected. Draco was the last line of defense to Harry, and he hoped everything would go according to plan so that he would be unnecessary.
When Harry started to wake up Draco quickly brought the water over to give him. "Hey, Harry, how're you feeling? Sick? Dizzy? Hot? Cold? G-" Harry interrupted him with a great sigh reminiscent of his house mascot. "Malfoy please shut up, and where are my clothes?" Draco, clearly nervous, pointed to the table beside his bed and turned around to give Harry privacy. "The goblins threw the other ones out, but Ginny had these round-up for you. We weren't 100% certain that you would be awake so soon though. Thought you might sleep all day as you tend to do according to your friends. Luna says that's what happens when Ingles get stuck on your magic though." Malfoy said as though he completely believed and accepted this line of logic. Then again Harry can see horses that can only be seen after witnessing death.
"I only do that when it's safe, there's still a war going on. What exactly is going on Mal- Draco?" Draco pointed to the letter on Harry's table when Harry turned him around. While Harry read, and drank the various potions Draco was handing him he considered what he has seen so far. The school was very put together in its attacks, and every instant seems to have been thought out. Every move anyone made. 'I wonder who planned it?'
---
For now, this is a one-shot, but I will probably add more on to it at a later date. Maybe I can make this a really sad beginning to a Drarry and friend(s) travel back in time thing I've been wanting to write. Maybe.

Sumana Roy on Mahanagar, The Big City (1963) in her essay “City”.
My father, like many first time visitors, came to the city by train.
It was the only time, he tells me, that his dream had come true. He meant this literally – the long journey, squatting in the passage near the door, the smell of yawns and the sticky matted hair at the end of the journey, even the faces of his co-passengers and the ticket collector, he had seen them all in his dream, night after night. He hadn’t seen it in a film, not yet, only read about it in a few novels that had found their way into the village school library.
His first journey to the city was, he likes to romanticise, the opposite of Satyajit Ray’s journey to Nischindipur, the village where his film Pather Panchali is set. A stale joke about their common surname later, he tells us how, when he watched the film for the first time, he had repeatedly looked at the projector light in an old cinema hall to see whether that beam of light which contained in it the journey from the city to the village, could also hold its opposite – the story about a journey to the city.
My first visit to the city was through a film: Satyajit Ray’s Mahanagar (“The Big City”). I was, I must emphasise, forced to watch this film. At that age, black and white films signified boredom to me: they made my mother weep and my father garrulous. It was my father, with his eccentric ideas about a child’s education (he had once made my brother and me stand outside in the dark, moonless night for four hours to overcome our fear of darkness!), who made us watch the film. He asked us, my brother and myself, to “swallow” the film. He used that word often in Bangla, especially when he made us memorise the names of all the plateaus in Asia, or eat bitter gourd on Sundays, or watch Ray and Ritwik Ghatak....
The lead actress in the film (the only word for actress in our vocabulary then was “heroine”) was Madhabi Mukherjee. An aquiline nose, perfect lips, loose half-formed ringlets of hair falling near her ears – she was an emblem of natural sophistication, the city woman-in-becoming. My father, while watching the film with his friends, discovered his love for the woman who would be my mother. He found a resemblance between the two women, which no one since then seems to have noticed. Madhabi Mukherjee, in his arriviste’s eyes, became the woman he needed to possess; only a woman like her would make the city, with its tortures of repetition and trials of entrance tests, bearable. And so he wooed the woman with the only thing he had: his imagination. He wooed her with things he thought would mark him less as an outsider, for when everyone slept at night, he pulled himself out of the hostel and saw it as one would see it from the sky. It looked like a jail to him when he first arrived, and then, with time, he began thinking of the building as a living thing, as a fish with its stomach full of eggs. Those eggs were young men like him, his hostel-mates, and just when he was on the verge of falling asleep, this half-imagined dream flew out of his mind and became independent. It gave him cold sweat and delayed his sleep further. In that dream he saw a very big fish, bigger than a whale, taken out of water; its stomach full of eggs, the fish was taken to a hospital and, there, declared dead on arrival, its body was sent for post-mortem to the morgue. There, with the stomach ripped open, the eggs, thousands of tiny round islands, start floating on a large tray. He could never see the end of the dream. He couldn’t exert his imagination enough to tell him what became of the eggs. He, a rationalist who showed his lately-found modernity by criticizing astrologers and palmists, was troubled by guilt, by the fact that he could give a dream such importance. And yet, he knew that he wanted to know what would become of people like him.
Some dreams travel to places only to disappear. When my father moved to the Chicken’s Neck, a fledgling small town in which to put up his tent, the dream about the city-fish just disappeared. He searched for it in vain. When he tells us to not allow our dreams to vanish, I sometimes wonder whether he means it literally.
He finds it strange that my mother, a sentimentalist on leash, does not remember a single dream about the city. Perhaps he doesn’t realize that the city was never an object for her. Though she grew up in Tagore’s Santiniketan, she travelled with her parents to the city almost every weekend. My grandmother, a British woman who grew up in London, would not have been able to survive in India otherwise. She followed my grandfather to India to experience the Gandhian ideal of “simple living, high thinking”, and strangely, like most fans of that cult, decided that such a life was possible only in a village. So, she became a villager with a vengeance: living in a clay house, keeping a tiny poultry farm, growing her vegetables and even keeping a horse and two cows. But after the long week that she and her husband spent in treating the unfamiliar diseases of the villagers of Bolpur (for Bolpur was then a village and not the pretentious university town it is today), she longed for the Englishness of Calcutta. It was all there in the words: Park Street, Grand Hotel, Flury’s, Nahoums, Trincas. They, with their music and lights and fresh-from-the-oven smells, made cityness available to her. They, and the secondhand booksellers on the pavements in Esplanade – from them she bought all that was available and, after two afternoons of reading them, following Miss Marple (whom she described, in her doctor’s idiom, as “libido-anaemic”) and Hercule Poirot (an example, she used to teach my mother, of the silent “t”) on their expeditions, all this while keeping an eye on Calcutta as it moved without questions outside her window in the Grand Hotel.
“A city must have a village in it to be a city,” was her oxymoronic prescription, and perhaps her daughter took it seriously when she fell in love with my father, a man who had, not too long ago, not known a proper bathroom.
In Mahanagar, the Majumdar family of the 1950’s Calcutta could have been from a village, followers of the first part of my grandmother’s favoured doctrine of “simple living”. They dress simply, talk in a language that was being fashioned by the middle-class, simultaneously in life and in art, but their problems are urban. To borrow an old Shavian dictum: No city, no conflict. Ray lets the city become a microcosm of the newly-independent nation coming to terms with the dissatisfaction of unemployment (whose climax his colleague and contemporary Mrinal Sen would show us in Calcutta 71, a decade later) and, yet, his city is a real city. I remember one scene in the film where I was tempted to get up and wipe the sweat off the black and white television.
It was the first time in my life that I saw so many people on a ‘real’ street. It would be the first impulse that would trigger my anthropological curiosity about crowds, and I can actually recall asking my father how different the men and women in the Republic Day Parade (till then my measure of multitude) were from the crowds in Ray’s city. Ray’s film ends with a shot of the crowd, and then a movement of the camera tugged gently upwards to show a streetlight. When I had first watched the film, my father, in trying to explain the world to his children, had told us that it was a symbol of hope for the citizens. Since then, every time I have watched the film, I have found myself in disagreement with him. For me, this is Ray’s Tagorean gaze into the distant and, at the same time, it is also a space where Ray will leave us with binaries but will not break them for us: man-machine, many-one, crowd-individual, sympathy-empathy.
Sometimes I am nostalgic for my first interpretation of the film – I had thought it was a story about lipstick. The man was angry with his wife because she had worn lipstick. If she wore no lipstick, they would live happily ever after. I didn’t like the film because, at seven, like most girls, all I wanted to do, if allowed, was to wear lipstick at all times of the day, even while bathing or sleeping. I was also a bit angry because it was a black and white film and I couldn’t make out the colour of the heroine’s lipstick.
Many years later, when I learnt that an “imported” maroon lipstick was the first gift my father had given my mother, a precious amount spent from his meagre university scholarship, I began to understand, even if only partly, how cleverly Ray had fused a semiotic of the ‘foreign’ woman with the awkward and adolescent consciousness of a growing city.

CONGRATULATIONS, Ace!
You have joined the ranks of the second Wizarding War as your original character VISALIA VICARIO under the India Eisley faceclaim. In order to fully prepare for what the Dark Lord has in store for you, it is advised that you read through the new member playbook, create your account within the next 48 hours (as this is a secondary character for you, a sideblog to your main character is acceptable), notify the headmistresses, and immerse yourself into the world of a war-torn wizarding world.
Your journey awaits you--in the darkness, in the light, or somewhere in-between.

She’s a firecracker with no motive other than getting her way, and I think that could cause some interesting development by throwing her into the midsts of the Death Eaters. Visalia is a little bit selfish, so seeing her in the midsts of the war and surrounded by the people her family is allied with where she’s supposed to make a good impression will be wild! I think she’ll be a good element to cause some annoyance within their ranks.

7. BIOGRAPHY:
Visalia’s life began with a series of gruesome murders. It should have been no surprise, considering the day and age she’d been born into — but most importantly, it was The Family she’d been born into. Muggles and no-maj from all walks of life had heard of the infamous Mafia, a network of criminals known for their ruthless codes and murderous behaviors. But few knew that Family was not the first, and that Visalia’s family predated them all. Salvatore Maranzano — the so called founder of the modern Mafia in the 1930s — could in no way lay claim to such a title. Maranzano was clueless to the fact that he’d had no say in his crime ring — he’d always been a puppet for something much larger and more complicated than any muggle could ever comprehend. The Lo Stregone were the real mind behind the Mafia, a network of wizarding criminals, potion dealers, magical creature poachers, and other unspeakable activities that dated back nearly a hundred and fifty years before the birth of their muggle counterpart. And Visalia had been born into the very thick of it — only weeks after what people called the coup of the century.
There wasn’t an important wizard alive who hadn’t heard the name Vicario — even the Ministry of Magic knew to fear them and all those they protected. They were immune and untouched, the government too fearful to persecute them or their illegal activities. The Vicario Family of Italy had always been an untouchable force to be reckoned with, their secession uninterrupted from father to firstborn son for the entirety of their existence. But when Dante Vicario — second born son to the head of Lo Stregone, Orlando Vicario — snapped after years of abuse from his elder brother and father, the history of Lo Stregone and the Vicario family was forever changed. In a matter of hours, Dante slaughtered his father, mother, and brother with little to no guilt or mercy. His new wife Carina — the love of his life, who at the time none knew was pregnant — died in the crossfire. Orlando’s three younger brothers — Visalia’s father among them — would retaliate against their nephew in the days that followed, grappling for a criminal throne they believed was theirs. In a matter of three days, Dante Vicario wiped out most of the Vicario family and became the head of the Family at the young age of twenty, ending the perfect lineage of power. Each met the same fate as Orlando, as well as their partners who backed their pompous claims… all except Visalia’s mother. And it was because of Carina and their unborn child — their last gift to this world — that Dante would spare his aunt, as Aria Vicario was pregnant.
In repentance for his sins, Dante let Aria and the daughter within her live, despite the treason of her husband. Three short weeks later, Visalia would grace the world with her presence. And what a precise she would become — a spitfire who would rather have dirt under her nails than a manicure. It was a surprise to the remaining Vicario family members and their underlings that Dante instantly put Visalia on a pedestal, spoiling her near rotten from the moment she took her first breath. As a result, Aria did everything she could to mold her only daughter into a perfect young woman who would potentially take over Lo Stregone. Visalia grew up in a gilded cage — one she desperately wanted to escape. She’d been born with a rebellious nature, and locking her up inside a mansion’s walls only made it grow resilient. From the time she could walk, Visalia was finding new ways to hide from her mother and the countless number of nannies and butlers at her beck and call. Though in a gilded cage of silver and gold bars, the first ten years of her life granted her some version of freedom. She was allowed to roam her home alone, leave the Vicario estate with a single escort or her mother, sometimes stow away on her cousin Dante’s — though he was more of an uncle than anything else — work trips.
But at the tender age of ten, her life too a dramatic turn. After a series of attempts on her life, Visalia’s cage grew smaller. Considered Dante’s single weakness, some of those loyal to the late Orlando seeked to assassinate her in order to take a hit at La Stregone’s head. After that, everything changed. Visalia all but had her wings clipped. Where she’d once been allowed to walk her own home freely, her mother immediately assigned a twenty four hour surveillance on her daughter. Visalia found it suffocating — her mother pressed her harder to become a proper young lady, dressing her up for parties and social events. Yet Visalia could never enjoy such things, as she was constantly surrounded by a brigade of men in black suits. As Visalia approached her teen years, her rebelliousness came shining through in a blast of resistance. She began sneaking out, running away, and raising hell at any event she was forced to attend. By the time she was fourteen, she’d escaped through her window a total of one hundred and twenty times, gone missing for up to a week, and managed to make thirteen bodyguards quit out of sheer frustration and fear that it would be on their watch that the Lo Stregone heir would be assassinated.
Days after her sixteenth birthday, Visalia was caught sleeping with her newest guard in a professor’s supply closet. After that, she snuck out of Durmstrang Institute nearly a dozen times — after being expelled from Beauxbatons for breaking into the pegasus’s fire whiskey and promptly distributing it to her entire house, ensuring a very loud and very drunken party that would go down in history — she managed to go through another three bodyguards by the age seventeen, bringing her total to seventeen in seventeen years. The last one only lasted four months. Finally, with the approaching war, Dante thought it safer to pause her education at Durmstrang Institute — much to the headmaster’s relief, as the only reason she was even allowed to attend the school was out of fear of Dante himself. Since her removal, Dante and Aria thought it smartest to move her to their London estate where she might cause less trouble — a silly idea in Visalia’s eyes. While the Lo Stregone care not if the happenings of the war itself, Dante and the Family allied with Lord Voldemort for the sheer sake of power and profit, as many of the Death Eaters find their origins within the wizarding Mafia. But despite this alliance, Visalia couldn’t care less about politics or the fire that fuels it. The youngest Vicario is more concerned with getting her fill of the party scene…that is, until she discovered her mother hadn’t given up on her babysitting schemes.
CONNECTIONS: Marcello Rodriguez: Goddamn him. Visalia’s arrival in London was supposed to be all fun in games — but Marcello’s arrival marks her eighteenth bodyguard, and she plans on getting rid of him just as quickly as the rest. She’s grown tired of her mother’s attempts to rein her in, and if everything goes her way, he won’t last any longer than any of the others did. London was supposed to be her playground — the chance for finally getting some freedom — and Merlin help her, this sellsword won’t be the one to ruin it.
