CHAPTER 03: the witching hour

THE BASICS:

Muggle London possesses a queer sort of magic to it; the likes of which the wizarding world has never been able to replicate. The vivacity of life that brims and overflows through its buildings and pours onto the street never fails to dazzle both citizens and tourists alike. Year after year, century upon century. As Halloween has drawn near, the city of London has decided to host a party for this year’s festive haunt. Londoners and travelers alike are invited to attend this spooky spectacle, participate in the fun and games floating around the social event, and partake in the annual Halloween costume contest, to be announced at the stroke of midnight.

But while the Muggles, blissfully unaware of the torment and war that rages on around them, through the slips and cracks in their own reality’s very fabric and foundation, prepare for the party of the year, the wizarding world prepares for a very different sort of Halloween.

THE DEATH EATERS:                            

Halloween is one of Bellatrix Lestrange’s most infuriating times of year. She celebrates the holiday as a sacred remembrance day for the wizarding race alike, while remaining repulsed and enraged by the childish spectacle the Muggles make out of a day full of magic and lore of years past. And after all, what better day of the year to take something the Muggles cherish and turn it into a statement for the Dark Lord? As Lord Voldemort’s second-in-command, Bellatrix feels personally responsible for getting the message of the Dark Lord out to the far corners of Europe, where he may be revered and feared by the entire wizarding community.

Thus, the Death Eaters will be infiltrating the Muggle Halloween party as guests, disguised in the ridiculous costumes Muggles are so fond of. When the clock strokes midnight, the Death Eaters plan on unleashing themselves upon the party and making a statement that will reach every corner of Europe; they will make an example out of these Muggles, torturing and slaying them in the name of the Dark Lord. In Lord Voldemort’s new reign of power, there will be no time for free-thinking Muggles. They will bow to the wizarding world’s whim or they will all die. One. By. One. 

THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX:  

Unbeknownst to the Death Eaters, the Order might actually have the upper hand in this scenario. Through a stroke of pure luck, Lupin and Tonks learned of the Death Eaters’ plans through questioning a neutral contact shared between the Order and the Death Eaters. As such, those among the upper tier of the Order have unanimously agreed upon one thing: the Muggles, defenseless and clueless of their impending doom, must be protected at all costs. Scrabbling to find means to enter the party undetected, the Order have decided to infiltrate the party on their own terms, just as the Death Eaters have.

In order to attempt to remain as discreet as possible, the Order will arrive at the party in clusters via a Floo spell set up within the confines of the Burrow. Members of the Order attending the party will be in full costume appropriate for the event, the same as the Muggles, and will be responsible for protecting them from harm and, ultimately, stopping the Death Eaters before they reach the final bell at the stroke of midnight. While selected Order members will be protecting Muggles and investigating the party, Arthur Weasley, Molly Weasley, Kingsley Shacklebolt, and Andromeda Tonks will stand watch at the Burrow, letting people in and out of their home as they attempt to smuggle people to safety.

NEUTRAL PARTIES:  

As the neutral characters have no particular ties to either party in this war (yet), their reasons for attending this party may vary. Perhaps they have heard supporters from the Order or Death Eaters will be in attendance and wish to show their support. Or perhaps the idea of a light-hearted party during such a dark time is sweet relief. Regardless of the reason, make sure your character is in attendance for this year’s Halloween party--it’s simply to die for!

THE TECHNICALITIES:  

Ivory and Bone’s second group event is set to have an estimated two week timeline (from October 29th to November 11th). If this event timeline has to change for any reason, the admin team will alert all members promptly. During this time, the headmistresses ask that any starters or threads created within this timeline revolve strictly around the location and content of the event. We also ask that all members attempt to engage in at least one full length para thread for the event, and shorter threads / convos are, as always, welcome in addition.

Members are also encouraged to create a separate post detailing what their character’s costume for this event will be. Your creation can be made on platforms such as Photoshop, Polyvore, Pinterest, etc. Just make sure to link and post your creation on your character’s blog and tag it with “iabevent” for everyone else to see! Please keep in mind that the year in game is 1998, so any and all costume references must be pertinent to the time period (i.e. no “Katniss Everdeen” or Stranger Things characters floating around, as neither of those exist yet in this world). Last but not least, all starters for the event (as well as the info card) may be tagged with “iabstarter” and “iabevent”.

If you have any questions, whether in regards to the event or anything else, feel free to contact the headmistresses as you see fit! The point of this event is to have fun and progress the group in an inclusive manner. Please keep in mind that this is the last group event before we slip into Ivory and Bone’s second volume, so there will be heavy content posted throughout this event and you just may find a surprise twist at the end!

• Visalia’s life began with a series of gruesome murders. It should have been no surprise, considering the day and age she’d been born into — but most importantly, it was The Family she’d been born into. Muggles and no-maj from all walks of life had heard of the infamous Mafia, a network of criminals known for their ruthless codes and murderous behaviors. But few knew that Family was not the first, and that Visalia’s family predated them all. Salvatore Maranzano — the so called founder of the modern Mafia in the 1930s — could in no way lay claim to such a title. Maranzano was clueless to the fact that he’d had no say in his crime ring — he’d always been a puppet for something much larger and more complicated than any muggle could ever comprehend.  The Lo Stregone were the real mind behind the Mafia, a network of wizarding criminals, potion dealers, magical creature poachers, and other unspeakable activities that dated back nearly a hundred and fifty years before the birth of their muggle counterpart. And Visalia had been born into the very thick of it — only weeks after what people called the coup of the century.

• There wasn’t an important wizard alive who hadn’t heard the name Vicario — even the Ministry of Magic knew to fear them and all those they protected. They were immune and untouched, the government too fearful to persecute them or their illegal activities. The Vicario Family of Italy had always been an untouchable force to be reckoned with, their secession uninterrupted from father to firstborn son for the entirety of their existence.  But when Dante Vicario — second born son to the head of Lo Stregone, Orlando Vicario — snapped after years of abuse from his elder brother and father, the history of Lo Stregone and the Vicario family was forever changed. In a matter of hours, Dante slaughtered his father, mother, and brother with little to no guilt or mercy. His new wife Carina — the love of his life, who at the time none knew was pregnant — died in the crossfire. Orlando’s three younger brothers — Visalia’s father among them — would retaliate against their nephew in the days that followed, grappling for a criminal throne they believed was theirs. In a matter of three days, Dante Vicario wiped out most of the Vicario family and became the head of the Family at the young age of twenty, ending the perfect lineage of power. Each met the same fate as Orlando, as well as their partners who backed their pompous claims… all except Visalia’s mother. And it was because of Carina and their unborn child — their last gift to this world —  that Dante would spare his aunt, as Aria Vicario was pregnant.

• In repentance for his sins, Dante let Aria and the daughter within her live, despite the treason of her husband. Three short weeks later, Visalia would grace the world with her presence. And what a precise she would become — a spitfire who would rather have dirt under her nails than a manicure. It was a surprise to the remaining Vicario family members and their underlings that Dante instantly put Visalia on a pedestal, spoiling her near rotten from the moment she took her first breath. As a result, Aria did everything she could to mold her only daughter into a perfect young woman who would potentially take over Lo Stregone. Visalia grew up in a gilded cage — one she desperately wanted to escape. She’d been born with a rebellious nature, and locking her up inside a mansion’s walls only made it grow resilient. From the time she could walk, Visalia was finding new ways to hide from her mother and the countless number of nannies and butlers at her beck and call. Though in a gilded cage of silver and gold bars, the first ten years of her life granted her some version of freedom. She was allowed to roam her home alone, leave the Vicario estate with a single escort or her mother, sometimes stow away on her cousin Dante’s — though he was more of an uncle than anything else — work trips.

• But at the tender age of ten, her life too a dramatic turn. After a series of attempts on her life, Visalia’s cage grew smaller. Considered Dante’s single weakness, some of those loyal to the late Orlando seeked to assassinate her in order to take a hit at La Stregone’s head. After that, everything changed. Visalia all but had her wings clipped. Where she’d once been allowed to walk her own home freely, her mother immediately assigned a twenty four hour surveillance on her daughter. Visalia found it suffocating — her mother pressed her harder to become a proper young lady, dressing her up for parties and social events. Yet Visalia could never enjoy such things, as she was constantly surrounded by a brigade of men in black suits. As Visalia approached her teen years, her rebelliousness came shining through in a blast of resistance. She began sneaking out, running away, and raising hell at any event she was forced to attend. By the time she was fourteen, she’d escaped through her window a total of one hundred and twenty times, gone missing for up to a week, and managed to make thirteen bodyguards quit out of sheer frustration and fear that it would be on their watch that the Lo Stregone heir would be assassinated.

• Days after her sixteenth birthday, Visalia was caught sleeping with her newest guard in a professor’s supply closet. After that, she snuck out of Durmstrang Institute nearly a dozen times — after being expelled from Beauxbatons for breaking into the pegasus’s fire whiskey and promptly distributing it to her entire house, ensuring a very loud and very drunken party that would go down in history — she managed to go through another three bodyguards by the age seventeen, bringing her total to seventeen in seventeen years. The last one only lasted four months. Finally, with the approaching war, Dante thought it safer to pause her education at Durmstrang Institute — much to the headmaster’s relief, as the only reason she was even allowed to attend the school was out of fear of Dante himself.  Since her removal, Dante and Aria thought it smartest to move her to their London estate where she might cause less trouble — a silly idea in Visalia’s eyes. While the Lo Stregone care not if the happenings of the war itself, Dante and the Family allied with Lord Voldemort for the sheer sake of power and profit, as many of the Death Eaters find their origins within the wizarding Mafia. But despite this alliance, Visalia couldn’t care less about politics or the fire that fuels it. The youngest Vicario is more concerned with getting her fill of the party scene…that is, until she discovered her mother hadn’t given up on her babysitting schemes.

London was supposed to be her playground — the chance for finally getting some freedom —  and Merlin help her, this sellsword won’t be the one to ruin it.
