20 Questions for Fic Writers

I wasn't technically tagged in this but it popped up in one of my old ship tags so close enough!

How many works do you have on AO3? 18, I'm not very prolific haha

What's your total AO3 word count? 60,598 (again, not very prolific lol)

What fandoms do you write for? It changes over time, depending on what I get inspired by. Back in the old days (not on AO3) it was a lot of Pokemon and Gundam Wing. On AO3, it's been mostly Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (yes I know lol), Victoria (ITV), and Remedyverse. You may notice 2 of those 3 feature Rufus Sewell in them. :D

What are your top 5 fics by kudos? Autumn Hearts, my first big fanfic; To The Rescue, which was written for a friend; Christmas Lights; Compass Rose; and Winter Hearts, the attempted sequel to Autumn Hearts that I ran out of steam for. 4 out of 5 are for the ship Vicbourne from Victoria, a fandom I was very active in at the time. (Hopefully one day a Remedyverse fic will pull into that lineup!)

Do you respond to comments? Yes, just about every one! Sometimes I don't if it's been multiple years since I wrote the thing and I don't have much to say back, since I figure some people don't necessarily want the author to respond anyway.

What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Uhhh maybe Dreams of Zanarkand, but it could tie with a couple others depending on how you look at them. I don't tend to write angsty endings in particular, more just one-shots or chapters.

What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Autumn Hearts, for sure. It's akin to a fix-it fic.

Do you get hate on fics? Not really. I had someone harassing me via comments some years ago, but despite what they said, it wasn't really about the fanfics.

Do you write smut? Yep, sometimes.

Do you write crossovers? I used to, a looong time ago, but not anymore.

Have you ever had a fic stolen? I don't think so.

Have you ever had a fic translated? No, but that would be cool!

Have you ever co-written a fic before? Yes, though not in a very long time.

What's your all-time favorite ship? Whatever my current one is. :D Haha but seriously, aside from a few pieces that I wrote for friends, you can pretty much tell what I'm fixated on by what I'm writing about.

What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? Honestly, Winter Hearts was never intended to be finished because it was just going to be something I chipped away at when I felt like it and had ideas, but it would have been really cool to have the full 4 seasons of titles. I tend not to post anything unless it's finished, these days, because having them sit there unfinished saps my motivation.

What are your writing strengths? Dialogue that flows and sounds natural and in-character, I hope. If nothing else, I want to get the characters right, even in AUs. Most of my stuff is character-based rather than plot-based, anyway. I also love leaving little crumbs from the source material in my writing, like exact phrases or motifs used in different ways. Not sure if that counts as a strength.

What are your writing weaknesses? Supplementing dialogue with action or prose. I often like letting the reader draw their own conclusions, but I think that can make things a little sparse or unclear. And long plots are hard. And I'm just a rather concise writer in general, so nothing gets particularly long, even when another writer might have the same thing be twice as long.

Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? I don't really do this because I don't have occasion to, but there are various ways to do it. If it's substantial and you want it to actually be understandable to the reader and aren't relying on, say, language puns or something, then just mentioning they're speaking another language and putting that dialogue in italics can work.

First fandom you wrote for? Pokemon, so many years ago! I actually wrote a story with my friend by passing notes in class, kind of like roleplay but before I knew what that was. I copied a lot of it into a little notebook that I still have. I didn't even know to start a new line for each character's dialogue back then!

Favorite fic you've written? Autumn Hearts and now Apeiron. They're my most ambitious. Though Autumn Hearts will always hold a special place for me because it taught me I could finish something that long.

Not really, i try to but in reality i never get around to it

What is your job?

i currently have two jobs, one of which is a little hard to explain but essentially boils down to research in healthcare and the other is hospitality in the biggest tourist attraction in my country (which is a seasonal job). two VERY different jobs in very different sectors, hahah

If you could go back to school, would you?

I actually am still in uni and i do not feel any particular wish to go back to high school. I would, however, have chosen a different degree if i could start over again but thats a different story.

Can you parallel park?

Technically yes, i can, but i hate it and it takes ages so i avoid it at all costs.

A job you had that would surprise people?

actually most jobs ive done surprise people, but more so because nobody knows they exist as jobs. In high school i used to do delivery for the pharmacy and as mentioned before now the research job. both things most people dont know are things someone gets paid to do until i tell them hahah.

Do you think aliens are real?

realistically i dont think its possible at all that we are the only planet with living beings on it. i do believe that there are no aliens in our solar system, but i do not believe that in the entirety of the universe only one planet managed to create life. I also think that life might look very different on other planets but im convinced 'aliens' exist in some way shape or form

Can you drive a manual car?

Again, technically i can. but i try to avoid it all costs bc ive only driven automatic cars basically since i got my license lol

What's your guilty pleasure?

reading fic, even more guilty if its from a fandom im technically no longer into but i sometimes just get this weird nostalgic need, you know

Tattoos?

Not yet, i have a design and a place in mind but my family is very strongly opposed to all tattoos and i still see them often enough to be a little bit afraid

Favourite colour?

for clothes, blue or brown. for other things anything in the navy colour palette (so like burgundy and navy and other colours in those kinda hues)

Favourite type of music?

I honestly will listen to anythign that has a recognisable distinct melody (so mostly excluding metal, too heavy rock and some rap) but am especially fond of 2000s 2010s dance music or indie/pop music from anything between the 80s and the 2010s. Not a big fan of what seems to be more modern pop culture but i can appreciate a harry styles or a taylor swift every once in a while

Do you like puzzles?

Yes!!!!! anything that i can use my brain for im down

Any phobias?

creeped out by all bugs and spiders (yes, even the cute and pretty ones) and not a big fan of big animals. slightly uncomfortable at high heights, dont do well in the dark and very very very uncomfortable in small spaces

Favourite childhood sport?

Did gymnastics until i was about 7 and then switched the the loml that was swimming and did that all the way up until uni. hated anything involving running or a ball

Do you talk to yourself?

Not when im alone, sometimes when other people are present

What movies do you adore?

I tend to like any movie i watch. Special mention to knives out, megamind and bottoms though

Coffee or tea?

I like the fancy coffees when im out having a drink or having lunch, at home i prefer tea

What was the first thing you wanted to be growing up?

i dont remsmber what came first exactly but the three professions that had the most prominent part in my youth were hairdresser, teacher and most of all writer. I always liked writing and words and languages and making things but unfortunately that took a stark dive durong high school that im still recovering from lol

Okay so in terms of what’s on my AO3, I have Check Please, All For the Game, Sharp Zero, HP, and Miraculous Ladybug. I also have The Forbidden LOTR and PJO Fanfiction (as in, I’ve written it, but it’s never seeing the light of day)

(technically there is a PJO fic out there that has seen the light of day but I orphaned it because I was tired of getting comments asking about when it would be updated)

I do! It’s actually a very recent thing that I’ve started not responding to literally every single comment. Mainly I respond because I love talking about my writing so I am going to seize that opportunity when it comes up

6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

Oh, DEFINITELY Happy Birthday (HP). Check out that MCD tag ahah. (I say HP but what I really mean is that I write fic about Regulus Black. The Regulus Black-centric tag is my home in the HP fandom)

fun fact: this is a very short fic that I wrote when I was 15 and basically forgot about until recently, and then I reread it recently and went holy shit?? I pulled NO punches????

7. Do you write crossovers? If so, what is the wildest one you’ve written?

Not a ton? I think a lot of the fandoms I write for don’t really mesh that well. That being said, the aforementioned orphaned PJO fic is actually a PJO/ML crossover, so there’s that

8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?

Nope! Sometimes I get comments that are just.... really confusing? And a more common thing is that in my AFTG fic I’ll get comments from people who are so focused on Andreil (or the most common ships in general) to the point that like. they miss the point of what I actually wrote. Those are annoying but they’re not hate, they’re very enthusiastic, they’re just... enthusiastic about a story I’m not writing? So it’s a bit frustrating.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

No sjflskgjhgf I struggle enough to write kissing, I think if I ever tried to write smut my brain would just shut down. I’ve managed some fade-to-blacks (which are mostly in WIPs that haven’t been posted) but they rely HEAVILY on the powers of implication

10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

11. Have you ever had a fic translated?

No, although I have occasionally made a brief go of it, not to post, more as an exercise for myself in a language that I’m learning. Anyway I never finish them so I’m gonna say no

12. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Not really? I’ve definitely group brainstormed fics and then written them (the best example of this being Q&A (AFTG), which was the product of a truly off-the-walls group chat), but I tend to do all the actual writing myself. I think the way I write would drive a co-writer up the wall since it’s very disorganized and I don’t write stuff down because ~I know what’s gonna happen I don’t need notes~ and it would infuriate me if I was co-writing with me lmao, so I won’t inflict that on someone else

13. What’s your all-time favorite ship?

I regularly move through ships I’m SUPER focused on, like it’s kind of a rotation. I will forever and always ship Percabeth though.

14. What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

Okay so if you follow me at @birlwrites you may know this already, but i have this ‘warmups’ document that is just like, random ideas i get that i don’t necessarily want to finish but i just want to try out for a bit? and i have a rule that once a ‘warmup’ is more than 10 pages long (so 11+) then it has to be moved to its own document, just to make scrolling through the warmups doc easier. but usually, a warmup only passes 10 pages when i’m INTO it. so i have a bazillion wips i will probably never finish. i complain about this a lot. i have so many wips. i don’t need more.

here’s one: it’s titled ‘interrobang doesn’t know they’re dating’, it’s basically a full outline for a chowder/tango fic and it would be SO cool if i could ever like. get around to writing it. but i am constantly swamped with writing projects, so it’s probably not gonna happen. if anyone’s interested in adopting it though i’d be down for that!! i think it’s a fun idea i just almost def won’t write it myself

15. What are your writing strengths?

SNAPPY DIALOGUE AND SNARKY INTERNAL MONOLOGUE. my writing is COMEDIC, 90% of my ideas are based on a funny snippet that popped into my head, a lot of my worldbuilding is based on ‘hey you know what would be hilarious’ (whenever i explain how larai selects a chosen one in the rainfall universe i start laughing, which is a STARK contrast to how it plays out on the page), i love writing funny stuff!!

also i think my writing sounds nice, a lot of the time i pick words/syntax based on sound and flow so there’s that too. and i have lots of ideas! i don’t struggle much with writer’s block because a) i have a lot of strategies to deal with it and b) i have a lot of ideas to help get around it/work with it

16. What are your writing weaknesses?

PHYSICAL INTIMACY LMAO, sometimes in my end notes on shippy fics you can see me complaining ‘it took me literally 4 hours to write that very brief kiss’. also sometimes the humor in my writing gets in the way a bit, i have to very consciously put it away so characters can actually have serious, genuine emotions. also i don’t like outlining and i tend not to get betas for fanfiction so like..... i do my best continuity-wise but having really tightly plotted stories is just not my focus lol. (and i do put more effort into that for original stuff, it’s just fic where i kind of go wild)

17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

If the reader’s supposed to know what it means, then writing it in another language is iffy for me. (stuff like terms of endearment which come up a lot in fic are fine imo, you can just put a note in to translate them and your reader will prob remember)

If the pov character isn’t supposed to understand it, and it doesn’t matter if the reader understands it, then ig it’s fine? but unless you already speak the other language (and i am NOT confident in my ability to translate english into literally any other language), then i think it’s way easier to just note that a character’s speaking x language and provide tone indicators, body language cues, etc. so the reader understands as much as the pov character.

That being said there are def times when it’s used super effectively--the dialogue in spanish in cemetery boys comes to mind! that’s not fanfic but it’s still creative writing so w/e

so i guess it comes down to: does actually writing out the dialogue in the other language serve a purpose? if it doesn’t, then you’re filling up the screen with words your reader isn’t likely to understand, which i try to avoid doing

18. What was the first fandom you wrote for?

so the first fandom i actually *wrote* for was PJO, but i distinctly remember creating warrior cats OCs when i was little. i never actually did anything w them but i had them and my favorite was a riverclan warrior named shellstream i remember this VIVIDLY

19. What’s your favorite fic you’ve ever written?

oh boy. okay so this is hard because i feel like i’m continuously improving as a writer. like in the sense that my writing is getting closer and closer to really matching my own taste? my favorites tend to always be my current projects as a result. and i do really love set those ghosts alight (HP) but it feels a little like cheating to say a fic i haven’t even finished writing yet. even though it’s def not cheating, that’s just the direction my brain is taking it.

i’m gonna say and then what? (OMGCP) because i’m super proud of the prose (especially ch 2 aka the first actual prose chapter), survived by (HP) for SUCCESSFULLY WRITING AN EMOTION and making readers cry :), and Q&A (AFTG) because i’m literally the one who wrote it and yet it still makes me wheeze. those are all fics i reread occasionally, because i’m big enough to admit i enjoy rereading my old stuff! (just like. to a point. some of my old stuff i can’t look at anymore because all the mistakes stick out to me like they have spotlights shining directly on them)

recently i haven’t woken up early enough for bfast or my family is just about to go out to buy lunch by the time i’m up hahaha but on the days that i’m alive for bfast, iced coffee and any pastry sitting in the fridge! my family is big on pastries like croissants and cakes like banana and carrot cakes! so one of those but the iced coffee is a constant in my first meal of the day

when i was 13/14, tablemate in school that was kinda shy and had very limited social circle but talked to me endlessly in class lmfao he apparently liked me too but we never dated and went to different schools at 16 y/o. we’re still kinda in touch though! we talked quite a fair bit last month just catching up but he’s more of an acquaintance now

how many piercings do you have?

2! just one normal lobe piercing on either ears, don’t think i’ll get anymore

how fast can you run?

back in school i used to be one of the fastest girls in my class LMFAO i could clock 12.5 minutes for a 2.4km run. stamina came from dancing since i had to run laps before dance class 2 times a week. but that is long in the past and now i get tired from climbing more than 4 flights of stairs pls spare me

what color is your hair?

naturally black but dyed brown! my hair has grown quite abit since i dyed it though now its black at the top and brown from above my ears onwards

irresponsible people. just pushing responsibility to others or avoiding their responsibilities. don’t need you to do a good job with your responsibilities, just don’t make your issues my issues. and if its a shared responsibility like group projects, then do your part to contribute and don’t expect others to cover you

selfish people, in many ways. just being self-centred, not caring about how others feel, doing things for personal gain at the expense of others

speaking in a passive-aggressive/sarcastic manner. i say this even though i’m afraid of confrontation but i much rather someone outright tells me they’re unhappy about something or wants to get a point across. i hate when they talk about it sarcastically or tries to sugar-coat their words to make themselves look less aggressive about their words. tell me straight as it is, if you’re already gonna talk about something bad don’t piss me off with your attitude at the same time

rae is nice! has a very nice ring to it and looks pretty!

do you want a boy or a girl as a child?

i don’t.. want one.. but both have their good and bad i can’t decide.. i want a puppy

what are your strengths?

is this an interview question i have had a few interviews over the past weeks i am well-prepared for this HAHAHA

i think i’m pretty resilient! i bounce back from bad times pretty quickly or i psycho myself to see the situation positively. but it is ofc coupled with a lot of complaining to the people around me first

although i hate unpredictable situations and having to quickly adapt to new settings, i think i adapt pretty quickly too. flexible? easy-going? idk what’s the right way to call it but yeah something along those lines. good at it but i still enjoy my stability and calm don’t want to have to quickly adapt to new situations.

what are your weaknesses?

very emotional HAHAH used to be much worse but i often let my emotions rule my head. i think i’ve improved A LOT though i used to be so bad but i think i’m now able to make rational decisions even if im bawling LMFAO

this sounds like a compliment but i’ve been told this too often as well. i tend to be way too nice to people who don’t deserve it. even if the person doesn’t deserve it or they’ve pushed all my buttons in the wrong way possible, i would still try to be as nice and polite as i can. really helps with me working in the f&b industry lmfao.

CLOTHING  STYLE.   black jeans! athletic shorts! small pieces of statement jewelry! turtlenecks! sleeveless tops with lacy straps! rayon blouses with 3/4 sleeves! tapered slim-fit pantsuits! shoes with some height that also pair with many different outfits! muggle hoodies supporting the local rugby and football teams! she “borrows” her partner’s tees and sweaters and casual wear, so lol add those to the list. she’s big on practicality and comfort over flair and height of fashion, but she does like keeping up with trends and coordinating her outfits to reflect that.

DONE  DRUGS.   yes. her muggle psychiatrist recommended medical mar*juana to cope with the very rare night terrors. she tried it for a little while, and it worked, but she ultimately prefers the calming potions made by healer pye. she used sleeping draughts for a little while after the war (who didn’t), but she hasn’t used them since.

GOTTEN  DRUNK.   lmao yes. me, ess the mun, cupping my hands around my mouth: baby girl’s a light weight, y’all!

CHANGED  WHO  THEY  WERE  TO  FIT  IN.   no. part of the reason we read about her experiencing ostracization at school (through harry’s pov) was because she didn’t waver in her defense of marietta and was quite open with her emotions (although she ended up having to repress a large part of her grief and anger anyway). she’s very firm about sticking to her resolutions and not bending who she is in order to do that. (that might get slightly lost in romantic relationships, though.) in her moved-to-the-muggle-world verse, she definitely changes her external habits and way of living to blend in, but it’s not so much a change of her character or her person.

WHAT  DO  THEY  WEAR  TO  BED.   old quidditch stuff— she has one or two ravenclaw scrimmage jerseys that are so old the house insignia’s already faded away. she also has endless tutshill tornadoes shirseys and tees that she’s worn and washed so often that the fabric’s become so soft now and is definitely susceptible to hem stitches unraveling. her favorite sleepwear combo is a pair of cotton boyshorts and to go braless under one of her oversized tutshill tees. comfortable— and as flattering and as easy access as possible, for those nights.

2020 20 Fact Game

1. Do you make your bed? I usually pull the blankets up because my cat prefers to sleep on the bed for most of the day, but it’s never particularly neatly made. 2. What’s your favourite number?  Changes often, but I’m partial to 11, 12, 16, 21, 22, and 36. 3. What’s your job?  I retired from working almost a decade ago to focus on managing my chronic health issues full-time. I have them mostly under control now, but in such a way that going back to work would throw the whole careful balancing act right out the window. My husband works though, so I mostly keep the house from falling apart and pursue various creative projects, primarily writing, painting, and fiber arts. 4. If you could, would you go back to school?  I’ve considered going back to college and pursuing an education in costume design, but that also has the potential to wreck my health again, and even if I managed to limp through and eventually get a degree, I wouldn’t be able to work. Instead I’ve focused on self-educating (the internet has a lot of resources!) and may eventually take one or two specific classes at the local community college, to improve my skills in things like tailoring. 5. Can you parallel park?  Barely, with extreme stress. I had to parallel park my truck for the first time last week and was very glad to have my husband there to help guide me into the spot, lol. 6. A job you had which would surprise people?  I worked as a video game designer for about a decade, including close to a year on the one and only authorized Firefly/Serenity MMO, and even got to have a development meeting with Joss Whedon at one point. And then, naturally, Fox killed it. (Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!) 7. Do you think aliens are real?  I think there’s definitely other planets in the universe that have native life, but having looked into the math of one of the interpretations of the Fermi Paradox -- the age of the universe, the fraction of stars that could actually support life, time frame it would take life to develop from single-celled organisms to intelligent civilization-building life, etc -- I think we are likely the first generation of space-going intelligence anywhere in the universe. There might be other civilizations out there at a similar development stage as us, but we’re separated by such vast distances that we’re unlikely to ever meet or even hear from each other, unless/until one of us first-generation civilizations develops space folding techniques to travel much faster than light. I don’t think there’s an older, wiser, more developed civilization out there waiting to welcome us to a galactic or universal brotherhood of space-faring civilizations. It’s something that occasionally makes me incredibly sad. 8. Can you drive a manual car?  Yes, but it’s been more than a decade since I sold my last manual transmission car. They’re just too rough on my wonky knee joints to drive regularly. 9. What’s your guilty pleasure?  I tend to love things wholeheartedly and openly, and not give a shit what anyone else thinks. But my husband and I do occasionally watch something we really hate just so we can loudly mock it together in the privacy of our own home. (And then keep those opinions to ourselves, to allow others to openly and unashamedly love what they love.) 10. Tattoos?  None, but I’ve toyed with getting one in reference to either Doctor Who or the Voyager golden record. 11. Favourite colour?  Sapphire blue, but I wear mostly black and gray. 12. Things people do that drive you crazy?  Walk slow when other people are behind them, smoke cigarettes in public. 13. Any phobias?  Generally no, but every now and then deep-sea thalassophobia will get me. 14. Favourite childhood sport?  Does climbing trees count? I was an intensely non-sports oriented child, and not much has changed in the decades since, lol. 15. Do you talk to yourself?  Mostly just when I’m sewing. I also sing to myself on the regular. 16. What movie do you adore?  There are a lot of sci-fi and fantasy movies that have had a huge impact on my personality and life trajectory, but About Time is one I can say I absolutely adore. 17. Do you like doing puzzles?  Sometimes, but the lack of a useful object at the end of it usually puts me off. We were gifted a really cool 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle for Christmas, and just finished it up yesterday because I was getting sick of it taking up my entire sewing table when there are things I need to be working on. I usually satisfy the puzzle itch with something like knitting or embroidery, but giant complex jigsaw puzzles when on holiday with family is a tradition I grew up with. 18. Favourite kind of music?  An eclectic mix of pop-leaning stuff, some very mainstream and some much more obscure. Anything that makes me think of my current fandom/ship, generally speaking. I have to like the lyrics and want to sing along. 19. Tea or coffee?  I am a strict no-caffeine person, but I like herbal tea and hot chocolate quite a lot. 20. What inspired you to rp your muse?  —  I love the character and had already been writing Anko fics since 2009. In 2013, I wanted to with my Orochimaru/ beau at the time, but they would never let me, as they had just broken up with their Anko/ girlfriend (and I came to the realisation they saw me only as their mommy).

A few years later, someone else came into my life (who is still very dear to me despite everything), who was looking for a new Anko. I was hesitant due the previous experience, but we meshed so well and she’s such a fantastic writer, I went for it. Those times meant so much to me. I still love writing Anko, even if it isn’t as much fun, anymore. I hold out hope it will make me happy again in time.

What keeps your inspiration going?  —  Desperation, I guess.

If someone disagrees to a headcanon of yours, do you want to know why?  —  I’m sure I can guess why. It’s always something or other related to sex. My ships, squick factor, etc.

If someone disagrees with your portrayal, how would you take it?  —  I don’t expect everyone to like me. I know I’m an acquired taste. It would mean a lot to have some people like me, but I don’t demand it. And if you’ve noticed I said me, rather than my portrayal, that’s because there’s a serious overlap. We’re not 100% the same, but we’re far from distinct.

If someone really hates your character, how do you take it?  —  I roll my eyes.

Are you okay with people pointing out your grammatical errors?  —  Yes, though no one has. I tend to catch them myself, just after I post, lol.

Do you think you are easy going as a mun?   —  I am as a mun. Real life may be a different story, but I’m no drill instructor when it comes to rp. Go at your own pace and do what’s comfortable for you. If you have a problem, talk to me about it. I might feel hurt, but it takes a lot to get an angry reaction from me. It’s only when you’ve been nasty to me that I’ll be nasty back. Don’t press my berserk button and we’ll be fine.

1. Do you write fanfictions or original stories and did you ever write fanfiction?

I write (and always have written) both; I actually started writing fanfiction when I was like 10 years old, before I even knew what fanfiction was, and then later discovered that it was a whole thing. For quite a few years now fanfic has been my main thing, but I’ve got a few original things that I’m knuckling down on this year and really enjoying, so we’ll see.

2. Did you ever write your stories in the middle of class instead of paying attention?

Not in the middle of class really, but I did write like half a harry potter au fic sort of thing based off of some rp characters at the end of my year 11/12 exams. The exams were like 3 hours long each, and like, I’m not smart but I am pretty quick at theory stuff so I’d have 1.5-2 hours per exam to fill, and I would never use the note paper for notes. So I’d fold my note paper into 8ths and write reeeeeally really small and fill it all up during my extra exam time. (I still have the sheets of paper if anyone wants to see xD)

3. How many notebooks do you have filled with your writing?

Since somewhere in 2015, I have filled 25 notebooks; not including anything I wrote straight out on a computer, on my phone, on random pieces of paper, or in other notebooks that aren’t included in my numbering system, which I have lmao.

4. What’s your favorite way to write? Notebook, Word Doc, Google Docs?

By hand in notebooks. I used to write in a word doc, and I still use word to type up into and edit it, but I find writing by hand really pushes my word counts up, and forces me to do an initial edit when I type it up, especially with fanfic because I don’t draft fanfic.

5. Do you write by yourself or do you need people writing with you?

I’ve always written alone - most of my friends don’t even know that I write, or don’t write anymore themselves, so it’s just me and myself over here. I was in a writing club at school for a while, and we tried to do a couple projects together, but the group got off course way too easily and nothing really got done, so I prefer to be alone with something I’m really passionate about finishing.

6. Have you ever cowritten with someone?

When I was liiiiiike 12, my friend and I co-wrote a lot of Avatar: The Last Airbender fanfic lmao, which to this day is one of my favourite writing memories. And I co-wrote an entire 50k ‘novel’ with my friend during middle school, which was actually pretty good fun - we traded off chapters and worked together on plot and worldbuilding and actually finished the whole thing. It was horrible (I can’t look at it anymore it’s so cringey), but a good experience to have. I’ve co-written with a few friends online too, with mixed results - nothing that’s ever really gone anywhere though.

7. Who do you bounce ideas off of?

No one lmao. I just throw them into the story and see if they work.

8. Have you ever taken an experience from your life and written it into a story?

Definitely! The most obvious example would probably be the series of short stories I’ve written and posted on this horse racing game I play, Flying For Home, which are sometimes drawn directly from stuff that happens around my workplace in real life, seeing as I work with racehorses in a big stable (the premise of the short stories lmao). 

Another example I can think of is, funnily enough, my other horse-related project; a novel called Vertigo, for which I have drawn on a lot of my own personal history and people that I’ve met in my life and thrown it into the mixing pot. It’s a bit of a personal daydream tbh xD Other than those, there’s a little bit of myself in everything I write, I think, though it’s hard to pick out sometimes.

9. Favorite type of music to listen to while you write.

I usually don’t let myself listen to music when I write, but if I do, it’ll be the playlist I inevitably have for the story, turned down very quiet so that it fades into the background - usually just pop and alternative/indie sort of stuff.

10. Have you ever had anyone give you “advice” that hurt you and prevented you from writing for a while?

I don’t think I’ve ever had anything that stopped me from writing, and I’ve certainly never had criticism from outsiders/strangers or whatever (generally people just ignore me). But I do keep my mum at a distance from my writing, as she tends to just push and push me to ‘publish something already’ and gives off the mentality of ‘it’s not worth wasting your time on if it won’t make you money’. She uh...doesn’t know that I have published over 100k of fanfic this year. Lol. She’s only trying to be supportive, in her own way, and I appreciate it, but I just don’t mention it to her very often, because she’s never really ready to listen to my point of view on it.

11. Have you ever had fans of your writing pester to write a certain way?

I don’t have fans xD

1. Have you ever had an idea that sounded really great in your head, but when you started writing it, came out terrible for whatever reason?

Yesssss, Flicker has gone through 9 versions in 2 years because every time I start it, it just goes very quickly in directions that I don’t want it to and it never feels right. This version I’m working on now is the first time I’ve really liked all the ways I could go with it so hopefully we’re past book 2 blues and back on track.

2. What’s your favorite part in writing a story? The relationships (or shipping), the plot, the worldbuilding, something else?

The like, ‘main’ scenes, the big hitters. The culmination of all the middle bits into that one main plot point. And relationships too, though not romantic persay - I just really enjoy the scenes where two characters will bounce off of each other for like 7 pages of dialogue, whether its enemies, or friends, or romantic.

3. And weird habits you do when writing, or to keep yourself writing?

I write by hand mostly, and I have my own system to mark as I’m going sentences I don’t like, or words that don’t really fit but I couldn’t think of the right one, or facts I’ve made up on the fly that need to be googled. If I just mark down stuff that I want to change later as I go, I find that I set myself free in a way, and I can just move on without getting stuck on a google spiral (also I don’t forget to fix my plot holes later).

4. Do you keep the internet on or off when you write?

On, though it’s very distracting when I’m trying to write straight on my laptop lmao

5. What books, authors, fics, or any media, have heavily influenced your writing style?

I spent a lot of my childhood reading Enid Blyton and authors like her; older books, mostly my mum’s books from when she was a child, and things from my hometown’s very, very outdated library. So they had a huge impact on the way I learnt to write (they also had an impact on the way I talk too, but that’s another story). More recently, the whole tone and way that fanfic in general is written has really influenced me, and I’d like to think I’ve adopted it and made it my own in a good way.

6. What time is the best time to write? Day, night? Morning, evening?

Evening/night; some days, I cannot focus until like 8pm when I go to bed. And then I lose sleep because I’m writing but y’know. For editing/typing up, that’s a late afternoon kind of job.

7. Is there anyone IRL that you let read your work? 

I have a group of friends that I’ve known for 8 years now that are allowed to read my work. We used to rp together and all used to write and so we all know how bad we were back in the day xD. One girl from that group has been my friend since kindergarten, so she has always had me shoving handfuls of words in her face. There’s been a few other friends that have read some of my stuff, but not all of it, and the older I get, the less I share.

8. How do you handle negative or unhelpful reviews or critique? Does it impact the way you write?

I’ve never had any negative response, so I don’t know. The silence when you’re 4 chapters deep and no one has reviewed is deafening though.

9. Do you respond to every comment/reply you get? If not, which ones get your attention and why?

I only respond to the long/sincere ones, because I feel like they deserve some encouragement in return for taking the time to really let me know what they thought.

10. Ever gotten weird, unsolicited messages asking to join an RP group or some such because this person apparently read your writing (but probably didn’t)?

Hah. Once or twice.

11. What is your favorite platform to post your writing, talk about writing, or anything like that? 

My favourite place to post and to read by far is AO3 - but I find the best platform to get feedback on is FF.net. My favourite place to talk about writing is over here on tumblr.

I know I will be breaking the rules to some extent, but I will be answering both their sets of 11 questions here. I don’t have exactly 11 people to tag, let alone 22 at the moment haha. Sorry!

Demidemonwrites’ questions!

1) Least favorite writing trope?

I’m going to be honest, I’m not entire sure. I’ve never thought of this before. I actually went through a couple forums where people are telling their least favorite tropes to see if anything struck with me. Honestly, I couldn’t find anything. Maybe I haven’t read a lot to know what I don’t like or if I’m just not that picky. I guess if things are written well I’ll be down with anything. 

I guess if I had to pick one, it would have to be “the good guy is actually the villain” trope. With Frozen I remember when I first sat down in the theater and thinking “Haha what if Hans was the villain” and then BOOM I was right. There was some other movie I watched where I called one of the good guys being the villain, but I can’t remember what it was.

2) Which of your characters are underdeveloped but you want to develope more?

My current new character for My Hero Academia, Yuriko Umeda. She’s the first character since my Marvel character, Tracey Madison, that I’m super excited to work on and write for!

3) Do you prefer writing stories or worldbuilding?

I prefer writing stories. I’ve mostly written fanfiction and gone off of worlds from fandoms. But I have recently been practicing worldbuilding by attempting to add onto the already existing worlds. I have an original story in the works, but I haven’t touched it in nearly four years. It’s there, but I’m struggling with it. Maybe one day I’ll finally figure it out. But yes, I like writing stories more so than worldbuilding at the moment. 

4) Where do you do most of your writing? (In bed, at a desk, ect...)

Literally anywhere. I write on my computer and on my phone on Google Docs so writing is portable for me. I do tend to write more on my bed or on a couch. I guess somewhere where I’m comfy.

5) If you have multiple ocs, what do you do to keep all their info organized?

Hahahaha I don’t. I’m pretty sure there have been times where I created a character in my head, came back to them months or even years later and forgot what their name was. I used to write a list of characters I created (even ones that I didn’t have stories for) back in high school, but now I don’t. I guess I just remember characters I really like. If I write for them I remember them of course, but if they are characters I have in my head and create a story for them then I tend to remember those characters. Although, I probably should start keeping them organized somehow.

6) Do you write your ideas down or are they mostly in your head?

Both. I tend to come up with ideas in my head (as everyone does haha) and when I have time I write them down on my notes section of my google doc for the story. But I also have ideas written down and in my head. Small ideas come to mind every now and then that I forget about that pop back up or they are minor details that I’ll write in as I write the story. 

7) What is your character(s) favorite food?

Yuriko’s favorite food is omu rice.

Tracey’s is Hawaiin pizza. 

Barry’s would be fried rice.

Aria’s is cookies.

Wes likes pretzels. Crunchy or soft he loves them.

Lyra’s is meatloaf. 

I haven’t thought of Barry’s, Wes’, or Lyra’s before but those popped in my head. It might change, not sure haha.

There are probably other characters that I can’t think of at the moment or characters that I haven’t written for in forever that I just omitted from this list. These are my recent projects. 

8) Out of all your character, which has the best story arc?

I guess Tracey? She’s the character who I actually write a complete story for instead of abandoning it. To this day I’m not sure how I did it, but I did. I have four stories completed in the series with her in it. The second one I liked, but looking back on it there’s some stuff I’d like to change in it. But I also think with that story I was able to develop her character more after that. 

9) Do you prefer heroes, villains, or anti-heroes?

D. All of the above. I like characters who are well written. Even if its a villain I will like their character. 

10) What character have you had the longest?

My longest character would be from my very first fanfic ever, but I don’t want people looking into that one hahaha! Out of my recent characters its definitely Tracey and Barry.

11) Favorite villian trope?

This was another thing that I’ve never thought about before and once again I looked into lists of villain tropes. I think I like bad just to be bad. One of my favorite villains is Joker and he’s evil just because. Another trope (if you count it as a trope or personality) is crazy. Harley Quinn, Junko Enoshima, and Himiko Toga are happy crazy and I don’t know why, but I love characters like that. 

Ezwriting’s questions!

1. Do you listen to anything while you write? Music, television, white noise, etc.

I tend to have something on in the background, whether it’s music, TV, or YouTube. I just like to have background noise. I do like to use music to picture scenes for stories. There’s been times where I’m listening to a song randomly one day and I just picture a new scene that has that song playing as background music and I just add it to a story. 

2. Can you describe your favorite character? Either yours or a beloved favorite from a book or any other media – I’d just love to hear about them.

Tracey and Barry are my MCU OCs. They are the Madison twins and they’ve been with me since I was a freshman in college. So about six years or so. That may have given away my age who knows lol. 

Barry worked with SHIELD and was picked up right out of high school. Tracey didn’t know what he did until the Battle of New York where she basically interrogated him on his uniform. Tracey is a hacker. She majored in Computer Science (even though I know absolutely nothing about it) and she has been playing with computers since she was a kid. She had an interest in them. 

Pepper was a friend of their mom’s so that’s how they met Tony and then the Avengers through Tony. Everything just falls into place or goes down hill from there! 

I’ve worked so much on them that they have become my favorites. But at this point, I’m taking a hard hiatus on them and focusing on other characters.

3. When you write, do you have any particular requirements before you can start? (Have to be a specific somewhere, need music, etc.)

Nope! If I end up writing, I’m lucky. I have the worst attention span and lack of inspiration at times that the moment I sit down and try and write I end up watching the most random videos on YouTube or scroll through Tumblr. It’s bad haha. 

4. Do you prefer to be hot or cool when writing? Do you snuggle up with blankets or have fans running, or are you somewhere in - between?

I’m in between. It depends on the day. Like right now I’m fine sitting on my couch in some comfy shorts and a shirt and write. But some times my legs might get cold and I’ll lay a blanket on them. But that’s usually if it’s cold out. I’m in between.

5. What kind of writing ‘quirks’ do you have?

None. I literally sit and write. I usually have background noises I mentioned in the first question (sometimes, very rarely, will I write in silence). I might have a cup of tea or a snack, but other than those I don’t think I have any writing quirks. 

6. What is your favorite book or book series?

Harry Potter, Peter and the Star Catchers, and The Truth About Forever. 

7. Is there anyone who inspires your writing?

8. What first got you started in writing?

I honestly can’t even remember. I think it was this anime that’s my favorite called D Gray Man. A friend got me into it late 8th grade early freshman year of high school and I loved it. I was also a major major dork back then (probably still am but not as much) and had a crush on one of the characters that I wanted to create my own to add into the story. I think one of my friends told me about ff.net and I picked up a notebook and pen and started writing. 

I do remember a couple times in elementary school where I had to write short stories. One I think I still have in my junk somewhere that was about a dog wanting to be a sled dog and the other was I had to write how the Oregon Trail was made. That one I don’t have, but I think I remember I wrote about how a girl ran into a goblin in a forest and had some competition with him over something. She ended up using this basket she had and used it to create the trail. 

Elementary school Mel was wild. I don’t even know how I remember that Oregon Trail one. Star Kid pick up my story and make a prequel to Trail to Oregon.

9. What would you suggest to new writers?

Just write. Even if you think it’s bad, just write and post it. Someone is going to love it. You are also your worst critic. I look back at my first fanfic and CRINGE when I think about it. But I have reviews on it. I also look back on it and realize that I have improved so much since then. You improve as you write and you can only go up. If you enjoy it, keep writing. 

10. Do you prefer to write first, second or third person?

Third person for sure!

11. How do deadlines affect your writing? Do they hinder or help you?

I don’t set deadlines for myself. Unless I’m writing something for a holiday or as a present to someone. I don’t do deadlines, but I think it would either help or hinder me. It would help me sit down and write, but I also think - knowing me - that I’d procrastinate and then rush to meet the deadline. Rushing would then result in my worst work I think. Maybe. But I just don’t do deadlines. I post when I want to.

02. When is your sim’s birthday? June the 3rd. (1868)

03. What is your sim’s zodiac sign? Gemini

04. What is your sim’s ethnicity? White, British. 

05. Does your sim have any nicknames? Mmm, I can’t think of any she might have tbh.

06. Do they have a job? No. She was the sole heir of very well-off family, and has saved up quite a bit, in money as well as collectables.

07. Where does your sim live? Forgotten Hollow.

08. Who does your sim live with?  No one, currently, but she sometimes has other vampires stay over for a longer period of time.

09. What environment did your sim grow up in? (strict, loving, cold etc.) An okay one I think? She had a fairly close relationship with her father, but her mom was pretty strict. 

10. What are your sim’s favourite food? Yup yup, u guessed it, it’s blood!

11. What is your sim’s favourite drink? Still blood, tho her fave blood type is A-Positive.

12. If they have one what is your sim’s favourite color? Red.

19. Is your sim a pet person? If so what is their favourite animal? She’s not very fond of animals. Before she was turned and in her early vampire years, she liked horse riding, but never really cared for the horses as pets.

20. Does your sim have a best friend? They aren’t best friends, but she is friendly with Vladislaus Straud.

21. What is/was your sim’s favourite school subject? She didn’t go to school but was taught at home by her governess, and though none of the subjects interested her, she was very good at math.

22. Is/was your sim a high, mid or low achiever in school? Mid achiever; she never made an effort.

23. Are they planning to go or have they already been to college? If so, what would be or what was their major? She hasn’t been and it was never the plan.

24. What are your sim’s political beliefs? (if they have them) She’s mostly involved in vampire politics (though not even that much), which tend to be very old fashioned and ruthless, in a “dog-eat-dog” kind of way, hence she belives humans are inferior to vampires. 

25. What is one thing your sim wants to do before they die? She takes life as it comes, and currently doesn’t have any long term goals.

26. Does your sim have a favourite TV show (cable) and/or movie? She watches a lot of tv, and really likes What We Do in the Shadows, both the film and the tv show. Her long-time favorite film is Broken Blossoms, since it was one of the first movies she ever saw. It’s been some time since she has seen it though.

27. Is your sim a Netflix viewer? If so what are their top 3 shows. Yup. She likes: Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, The Haunting of Hill House and sometimes she watches BoJack Horseman.

28. Does your sim like books? She does, though not as much as she used to. 

29. Does your sim enjoy video games, if so what is their favourite one and do they play on PC or console? No she doesn’t play video games at all, but she might like them if she was introduced to them.

30. What is your sim’s personal style? Classic, I think? In regard to style and fashion, her favorite time period was the 50′s lol.

31. Does your sim have a lucky charm? Nope.

32. Is your sim religious? Hmm.. She has never been overly religious, though she was brought up as a christian. Nowadays she’s more agnostic.

33. What kind of music does your sim listen to and who is their favourite artist? She prefers Jazz and classical, and her all time fave artist is Louis Armstrong. She also listens to pop, but only what’s in the radio.

34. Is your sim a festive person? If so what’s their favourite holiday? Last Halloween, some kids came trick and treating at her house. She scared them throughoutly and laughed about for days later lol, but apart from that, she doesn’t really have a favorite holiday. (Except maybe New Year’s Eve, since it’s a good opportunity for a a party.)

35. What is your sim’s favourite type of weather? Overcast, and dark stormy nights, in true vampire style.

36. Does your sim prefer to start fights or finish them? She doesn’t mind starting fights.

37. Does your sim have a dream job? Not apart from what she currently doing, which is being wealthy and enjoying it lol.

39. Does your sim get along with their family? She doesn’t have any family left that she knows of. When he was alive, she had a pretty good relationship with her father.

42. What is a secret about your sim? The first time she ever killed a human was an accident, and it shocked her more than she will ever admit.

44. What is a flaw your sim has? Oof, only one? 😂 Though she doesn’t go out of her way to hurt people, she doesn’t have much sympathy for those who can’t defend themselves. 

45. How do others generally perceive your sim? Snobbish and Mischievious.

(More) Sustainable Laundry Care for your Everyday (Vintage) Wardrobe

-as you build and refresh your sustainably sourced wardrobe focus on natural fibers-

Every time we wash and dry our clothes millions of micro fibers are shed and released into either the water or the air. Best for those fibers to be cotton, linen, wool, silk, hemp, etc. rather than plastic (synthetics like polyester, nylon, anything with stretch) which doesn’t biodegrade and will eventually make its way into our food or water supply chain.

-wash less often-

kind of obvious, but always good to remember that washing garments less saves water, electricity, and prolongs the life of the garment itself. In our home only athletic gear, undergarments and babywear get washed after one use. Jeans, blouses, sweaters, office wear, everything else can usually be re-worn at least a few times.

hot tip: when it comes to extending your tops and dresses for 2-3 wears before washing, finding a natural deodorant that works for you (I love the Weleda spray) and wearing natural fibers will help reduce stinky sweat production and prevent creepy antiperspirant related staining. I’m also a big proponent of sourcing everyday pieces that have a loose fit through the armscye (the place where your shoulder turns into your arm) for ease of movement but also breathability.

hotter tip: if you frequently like to wear fitted retro styles, I know a lot of women like underarm protectors, which can be pinned or tacked in and can help avoid anxiety-inducing wet washing of vintage fabrics or extra trips to the dry cleaner.

-dry less often-

when you do a load of wash, consider what items can be hung to dry. I use a folding rack and for garments that aren’t heavy/don’t stretch, hangers on the shower curtain rod. Some items *do* benefit from a little fluff in the dryer to soften and de-wrinkle them a bit. I suggest letting them mostly air dry then popping them in the dryer for a quick 15 minute finish. Once again, saves electricity, reduces fiber shedding and prolongs the life of garments. Outdoor lines are awesome too, especially on breezy sunny days. if you have the outdoor space to set one up you should def go for it. Ours is retractable so it doesn’t get in the way of other yard activities when not in use.

-wash with cold water-

Most of our clothes do not need hot water to clean them. Use a cold cycle to save hot water and prolong clothing life. Generally in garment care, exposure to high direct heat should be avoided where possible. less heat = longer life. We generally use warm/hot water only for kitchen/bath linens, gym wear, and soiled baby clothes.

-use an EWG highly rated laundry detergent-

probably the easiest step we can take towards a more sustainable laundry practice is finding a healthier detergent. There are so many eco-friendly, “natural” detergent options out there. I love the Environmental Working Group’s list of rated products. It will help you find one that works for you and that you can easily pick up at one of your local retailers. Generally avoid fragrance (fragrance = chemicals) or any kind of deodorizing, anti bacterial, anti wrinkle, products. These all have more chemicals, many of which are carcinogenic (aka cancer causing) or endocrine disrupting (aka fuck with your hormones + reproductive health).

Hot tip: if you want to get real real with it you can make your own detergent using a handful of natural ingredients. There are tons of tutorials online. This one has only 3 ingredients! If you are already using homemade detergent and love it, let me know what you’re doing! It’s on my “To Try” list!!

-avoid dryer sheets and fabric softener-

I’ve used pretty neutral language so far, but dryer sheets are basically cancer causing/endocrine-disrupting chemical delivery systems. LOL. But seriously, they are loaded with fabric softener which is loaded with chemicals you do not need or want on or near your body, in your home, or released into the environment. not only that, they aren’t great for your clothes! 

but you don’t have to take my word for it:

“Not only does fabric softener not do what it promises, but it also prevents the fabrics from functioning the way they’re designed. With regular use of fabric softeners or dryer sheets, activewear becomes less breathable, children’s clothing becomes less flame-retardant, and towels become less absorbent.”

Wool dryer balls are a good natural alternative. They can last up to a year, help fluff your clothes, speed the drying process, and have naturally occurring lanolin which is nature’s conditioner. I haven’t done it myself, but I think you can even use essential oil with them to add a little natural scent to the laundry cycle, now that you’ve cut out all those nasty artificial fragrances.

dryer balls can be found at more holistic grocers (even Wholefoods) or local co-ops and farmers markets. there’s also always good ole amazon in a pinch.

-avoid dry cleaning when possible (it is often possible)-

Dry cleaning is a process that involves a lot of chemicals that are harmful to you and the environment. Conventional dry cleaning also requires exposing garments to high heat, which can stress fabrics over time, and be particularly harmful to older garments.

As you have probably noted, many garments made in the past 50 years include care instructions, and many of them simply say “dry clean only”. There is an industry regulation reason for this:  

“Under the law, if either washing or dry cleaning can be used on the product, the label needs to state only one of these instructions—and which one ultimately appears on the label is up to the manufacturer. An expert in textiles who asked that her name not be used for this article revealed to us that “clothing manufacturers tend to opt for as few instructions on the label as is legally required.” Given a a choice between “wash” and “dry clean,” manufacturers tend to choose the latter because it is more likely to lead to the consumer leaving the care of the item to professionals, and professional cleaning can reduce the manufacturer’s risk of of return by the consumer who mishandles the item with home-cleaning.”

I successfully machine or hand wash many many many pieces for myself and for the shop with dry clean only tags- this includes rayons, linens, silks, woolens and cashmeres oh my. You can too!

hot tip: if you have a newer washer dryer (like in the past 20 years), make sure you’re making the best use of the settings to be as economical as possible, and not just going with the auto settings. For me this means making sure its set to a cold cycle, and that the soil setting is appropriate (sometimes its lighter than “normal”). Delicate and handwash cycles are a great option for those “dry clean only” labeled pieces you’re nervous about wet washing.

-practice general garment maintenance-

doing things like treating stains, mending small seam pops or holes before they grow, and proper storage in conjunction with conscientious laundering practice will help prolong the life of your garments, and delay the need to purchase replacements. Being a better mender is a goal of mine (my pile of personal mending is ever-growing). As a preventative measure against pests and storage “musk”, I add lavender sachets to my drawers and closets. Dr. Bronners soap bars (in the paper wrappers) are great for this too!  I also use a fast evaporating alcohol-based homemade lavender spritz for the same purpose (not just for refreshing clothes, but also bedding, drapes, etc). And remember: friends don’t let friends use Febreze.

 The great news about all these changes is that they really don’t make more work for you, and they are good for your clothes, YOU, and the environment! Nothing like a win-win-win.

I read one of your tags and YES GIRL RANT TO ME ABOUT TOM THOUGHTS THROUGHTOUT THIS SERIES I LOVE WHEN YOU WRITE FUCKING ESSAYS-

omg i gotchu but buckle up sis bc… i just wrote 1.2K about this and i’m also admittedly a lil bit tipsy so this might not make sense 

Tom is one of my favoritecharacters to explore, mostly because I love trying to poke around of what’s goingon in his head forever. 

I think at the beginningof the fic, Tom is a character who is still trying to get his life together. Hereally didn’t have the best first relationship, and it was with his longtimebest friend. And I think going into it, we have a Tom who doesn’t know how todiscern what real love is. He bases his whole legitimate romantic experiencesbased off of Cara, so I think that tends to slow things down between the two ofyou later when he’s trying to pick a part his own feelings.

I think Tom has justbecome so used to people kind of casting him aside, since Cara did it andHarrison did it for a little bit too. And as much as he likes his cast mateswho have become his friends, like Zendaya or Jacob, he knows in the back of hishead that he’s not really their closest friend by any means. 

I think with you inparticular, Tom knows that he’s closest with you compared to everyone else inthe friend group. I mean, you always invite him out to go do things and youearnestly confide each other. He just really appreciates you and considers yousomeone that he genuinely trusts.

Tom really has thisproblem though in that he thinks he owes so much to other people all the time. Yousee this for starters in that he believes he owes to his family an act to showhe’s getting serious about things, and that in part means pursuing an actual seriousrelationship. So, when his mom asks about whether he’s finding someone, hisinstinct is to say that he’s done it and the first name that pops into his mouthis you, since you’re the one who often spends so much time with him and he’sinherently closest with.

I think too that when yougo along with this whole thing Tom is really touched since he’s well-aware ofwhat situation he put you in, but ultimately, I think he’s just so glad that you’rehelping him out in this way. I think the reader had grounds to be more upsetwith him about this, but she chooses not to. 

As a bit of a sidebar, Ithink Tom throughout this story — even though we never really touch on this— has this question that he consistently to himself where he doesn’treally know if people like the idea of him as much as they enjoy the real him.I think that’s just part of being a celebrity that kind of makes him a littlebit insecure about that, so that plays a role in it too on why he’s so gratefulbecause you actually know him.

And then he’s just happywith you two pulling this off after that first friend dinner, and then laterthe family dinner too. So he wants to be on an equilibrium with you a littlebit more, so he gets you gifts and tries to be as accommodating as possible. Ithink that’s also though because he does care about you a lot at the root ofit. It’s also ironic because one of the things that we talk about with Harrisonat the beginning is how he doesn’t really show outward signs of affectionreally; he tends to communicate them in subtle ways. And Tom is continuallydoing that throughout this story, and he doesn’t even realize it.

So then we get into theactual trip in itself. Tom is just overjoyed because you get along with hisfamily, he really is having fun with you, and he starts to feel like he’sexisting in this tiny bubble with you. Sometimes, he has to remind himself thatyou’re interested in Harrison, and you’ve spent so many months confiding in himabout Harrison. But really you don’t have any fans around you, just his family,and he kind of forgets about halfway through the trip that it “isn’t real” atone point. (The underlying tea is that his feelings for you are actually real,but because he has that false understanding of love following Cara he doesn’t pickit out at first.) 

When you mention yourdream in part two, I think that’s when he fully goes into this mental space ofjust letting himself exist in this bubble you two created on the trip where theoutside world isn’t intervening so much. And so he just is like, “Damn, I kindof want to do this,” and he just lets himself kiss you and be with you thatnight. When you ask him though if its official, that’s when he has thatawakening of like, “Oh God, no she actually likes Harrison, and this isn’t mygirlfriend. This is my best friend.” It’s ironic here too because Tom has thisfalse idea that the reality is that you’re supposed to date Harrison here, buthe doesn’t really pick apart his own feelings. And what’s real is truly whatexists between the two of you. That’s the most genuine element about this wholestory. 

So, he turns you downbecause he really thinks that this whole thing happened because you two justgot so drawn into the game.

But then in part three westart to deconstruct a little bit this false sense of reality the charactershave. In the literal sense, you know it ends with the reader learning aboutwhat happened between Cara, Haz and Tom. But in the more metaphorical sense ofit, it’s all about people realizing their feelings. Tom is the one in this partthat knows he likes the reader. I mentioned this in another ask, but you see itlapse on his face after you wake him up from his nap in this part.

He groanedfor a second, then his eyes started fluttering open, immediately looking atyou. A soft smile lifted on his lips as he stirred. 

“Hey,” hesaid huskily. He looked so angelic, you couldn’t help grinning back. He tuggedon your arm to bring you down toward him in bed and said, “C’mere love.”

It’s just such a lovelypart for him because as I said before, Tom didn’t know previously how todiscern what real love is. And in that moment he realizes it doesn’t have to beso intense, it can just exist in these small and less obtrusive ways. I don’treally know how to best phrase that, but it’s really significant moment for himin terms of development. And that’s when he really just starts being honestwith himself, and then the reader as well. With the reader earlier in the ficwe saw a false moment of honesty but because Tom was behind too it really didn’ttranspire.

And so then you know theNew Year’s party happens and throughout the night he’s kind of grappling withthe realization. So he’s really happy when you come over to him and you justsay that you need to talk to him, because that kind of gives him the venue to revealhow he feels about you.

But then when you go backto Harrison, he’s like, “Oh yeah, fuck.”

Then he drunkenly tellsyou the tea about Cara and Haz lol

But when part four settlesin, he doesn’t really remember it. And it’s also painful that next day becausehe has to remind himself that the two of you are going through the motions atthe yacht party and in advance of it by pretending to be dating. But god damnit, he realizes he doesn’t want that anymore. He wants it to be real so badly. 

When I think he getsconfronted with the loss of what you two have developed, it really hits himthat he has to say something to you, especially because he was the one thatturned you down. So that’s why he’s so bold about it when he finally gives youthat confession and he’s just purely honest about everything. I think too asmuch as he wants things in between the two of you to happen, he knew more thananything too that he just needed to put himself out there and open up to you.

I think afterwards he wasreeling a little bit, but he kind of tried to take his mind off of himconfessing his feelings to you by hanging out with Jacob. 

But the last thing thatTom really needs is just someone who isn’t going to cast him aside, and hebelieves in himself that he’s going to find that person. And he believes thatyou could be that person.

So when you whisper thosewords to him (”Tom you’re the one”) when you appear outside of Jacob’s loft, it’s one of the bestfeelings in the world.

What is your total word count on AO3?

109 062 words (75 fics). I started writing them around the end of last year’s October, so not bad at all if I do say so myself lmao (especially since this is missing all the domestic fluff prompts that would add like 10k).

How often do you write?

Is just “often” an acceptable answer? I don’t really have a schedule but if I don’t do any writing for a week, something is seriously wrong lol. If I really get the writing juices going on, I can easily clock a few thousand words a day, though it usually tends to fluctuate a lot depending on what I’m working on.

Do you have a routine for writing?

I have water and music (usually variations of rock) ready and then I just start writing (if I’m editing, there’s no music since it tends to distract me). With fics I usually just write them on one sitting since they’re so short but with anything longer, I tend to write for 25 minutes non-stop and then do a 5-10 min break. Very effective, especially if I’m aiming to write 6-10k in a single day.

What are your favourite kinks/tropes/pairing?

Kinks:

dom/sub & femdom: I practically live and breathe this stuff lmao. The dynamics of having someone be in control and someone else submitting is absolutely thrilling.

Tropes:

alpha/omega: I think this could be compared to junk food. It’s absolutely sinful and so good but having too much of it becomes overwhelming which is why I haven’t written it that much. I absolutely love its dynamics though (that are, surprise surprise, similar to the above).

Pairing:

Natjana/Quinn: Femdom for the win lmao. But more seriously, even though I love the dynamics, I also love the chemistry so much. They’re the couple who will always love and cherish each other, no matter what happens.

Inibri/Harkun: This has some similarities with above (like the dom/sub aspect duh) but it’s definitely darker. Neither of these characters could really be considered nice or even likable but here they are, together and completely wrecking me.

Do you have a favourite fic of yours?

Nothing specific pops into mind at the moment, though I have a special soft spot for all the smut I have written ;).

Your fic with the most kudos?

The Hux/Reader smut, To Have A Little Fun, though considering that fandom is quite a bit larger than swtor, it’s not a surprise lol. If I leave that out, then it’s Showing His Desire For You (smutty Marr/Reader).

…I’m not sure if the universe is trying to tell me that I’m good with smut or if people are just thirsty as fuck for it lmao.

Anything you don’t like about your writing?

Eeeh, I’m mostly happy with my writing. Sometimes I wished I had the patience to edit some pieces more but at the end of the day, I’m just happy to move onto the next one. Oh, I also sometimes hope that I would write longer fics but then I remember that’s not worth the effort lol (kudos to those who write longer fics though, I respect the shit out of you).

Now something you do like?

I enjoy my smut a lot, even though I never imagined I would consider myself a smut writer some day when I started writing. But here I am now, so goddamn proud to make yall hot and bothered lmao.

I also like the style I’m writing in and how much I have improved. English is not my first language and I used to be not comfortable in writing anything longer with it, but now my opinion has changed. Yeah, I still make mistakes, especially since my editing is usually quick when it comes to fics, but I’m glad to say that I’m actually confident in my writing now.

Saying that makes me strangely emotional because fucking hell. I have loved writing all my life but now I have actual, proper confidence in it with knowledge to back me up too. I fucking love my writing. I love the fact that I can form words into interesting sentences and make scenes and characters feel alive.

…I also love myself for having the patience to stick with writing through all these years. I’m so grateful to writing too because it has kept me alive and always made me feel better no matter how horrible I have felt. I love that it has allowed me to meet and get to know utterly wonderful and absolutely amazing people.

Wow. I’m crying now, even though I just meant to do an interesting little fic writer meme. I would apologize for rambling but I’m not going to because writing is very fucking important to me, if you haven’t happened to notice, haha.

E – Easist Person To Talk To: I have more than one: my wife, my younger sister and my bestie Indie @indiepjones46.

F – Favorite Song: This changes frequently, but there are songs that stuck with me since my teenage days. My all time favorite is ‘Can’t Help Falling In Love’ by Elvis Presley. My current fave song is ‘Broken Glass’ from Mayaeni…and guess what? I watched an episode from season two Hawaii Five-O and at the end they played that song. Gosh, I googled it, downloaded it and when ever I sit down and write this song plays on repeat.

G – Grossest Memory: I’m not grossed out that easily. But yes there's this one memory. I worked as a cadet nurse (I don’t know if this is the right word) for my internship (nutritionist). During this time I had to wake up the patients and there was this room with only old men. The first thing they did after they woke up was to cough. Most of them had problems with their lungs, they were mucus-ridden. The sound they made while the slim got coughed up was gross. They spat it out into a cup and handed me the half full cup with yellow/greenish stuff at 7am and the cup felt warm in my hands. I was always at the verge to puke.

H – Horror Yes or Horror No: No. I love me some tension, but real horror is way over the top. I wouldn’t be able to sleep for days.

I – In Love? Yes!

J -  Jealous of People: Yes, of course I’m jealous of people. But I guess this needs definition? I’m jealous in a way that I wish to be able to do something specifically that the other persons are good at. And there is always someone I feel jealous of. But never in a distructuble way. I can easily admit this to the another person: "I’m so jeaous because….or I envy you for this and that" It’s normal and common to feel that way, isn’t it? It think of this as nothing bad, nothing special, it just happens.

K – Karma, do you  believe in Karma?: (The letter K vanished at some point. So I added a new question here.) I did a very long time, but now not anymore. It’s just a way to explain things we don’t understand; it is a way to look for justice where there is none sometimes. I try to just leave it be. I tend to see the world as a grain of sand in the vast, endless space of the universe. I have no fucking clue what is going on and humans can’t grasp this energy in its mighty. I don’t want to be ruled by human laws after my heart stopped beating. So, no, I don't believe in Karma.

L – Love at first sight or should I walk by again?: I believe in love at first sight, definitely a yes here. As I see it love is a force of nature. This energy is always around us and inside of us. We don’t have to build this feeling because it’s just there. I don’t talk about getting to know each other. I talk about just the feeling of love. Love has different levels and different stages of how it feels. I love a lot of people, but there is a huge difference in how deep, how much and what kind of a relationship I share with this person. I even can love my tumblr friends at first sight because they phrased a sentence in a way that pulled me in under one second flat.

M -  Middle Name: Elisabeth

N – Number of Siblings: 1 younger sister and 1 older sister.

O – One Wish: Whenever such a question is asked, there is this one wish that pops up without hesitation. So I just put it here: to live a Life around horses, to be able to ride and to read horses the way Buck Brannaman is able to do it. The yearning to understand these beautiful creatures is huge.

P – Person You Called Last: I don’t like to make phone calls. I’d rather record voice messages on WhatsApp. The last one I recorded I sent to my younger sister. So I ‘talked’t to her.

Q – Question You’re Always Asked: There are actually two questions and they are always the same: „You’re inked?“ and this: „How old are you? No, you’re lying, you can’t be that old.“ So yeah.

R – Reason To Smile: SO many things are able to make me smile: my animals, my wife, tumblr notes, funny English words, Steve McGarrett, Danny Williams, a good show, a bird, a chocolat bar, coffee, my note book, a child, the way I'm dressed….because for the love of God I can’t figure out how to have style.

S – Song You Last Sang: I can’t sing AT ALL. I love to listen to music, but singing?….forget it. I’m terrible at it and I never feel the urge to sing because I can’t find out how you keep a tone. So, no singing at all. I just remember one time, sitting on a spooked horse, on a chilly winter evening, riding alone on my way home, and my horse was skittish as hell and I started to sing; „silent night holy night“ like those four words because I don’t know anything else by heat. I sang it on end with a shaky, squeaky voice to calm us both down. It didn’t work though. LOL.

T – Time you woke Up: Sundays are an exception 6.30. Normally it's 4.30am, every day because I feed the horses at 5am. On Sundays it's my woman who gets up that early. I love mornings and the early hours before sunrise.

U – Underwear color: Black or white, nothing fancy

V – Vacation Destination: It would be Hawaii or a horse ranch somewhere in Montana USA.

W – Worst Habit: My eating habits. I eat to not feel hungry anymore. I actually don’t care sometimes what it is and I don't sit down. I eat while walking, doing stable work, reading, posting. Hmmm, and after work I’m very introverted and I don’t like to talk. I might come across very impolite and distant.

X – X-rays: Only a few and mostly during childhood. My last x-ray was taken from my teeth by the dentist to check if there is hidden caries. I was lucky.

Y – Your Favorite Food: I love Thai food and all sorts of dairy products. I love simple stuff, bread, apples, a soup, a stew. I don’t need much. But I have a sweet tooth.
