Do you listen to music when you write? If yes, what kind?

My automatic response is yes, I need music ALWAYS or some kind of noise around me.* But I do write a lot on my notes app on my phone which often means I'm not really paying that much attention to the ambient noise. However I will always have some kind of playlist for characters/wips, and often that will involve a specific artist or album that fits the vibe and kind of becomes the default background noise - when I want music that Fits without being distracting the best thing is an album I've listened to to death already. For Only Ever Just One Night it was Jon Boden's Afterglow, which I hadn't listened to for ages, and right now it's a lot of early Elvis Costello and Springsteen. Usually I tend to...match what I want to listen to anyway to the fic and characters, but obviously with the Lymond band AU (@theartistknownaslymond) I worked on playlists first and then listened to them when I needed to capture the right feeling for the characters.

*The one noise I Cannot Work Through is the dog whining. He loves the sound of his own voice and has perfected the 'woe is me pay attention to me' whine that just. Cuts right through thought like the proverbial hot knife through butter.

2. Do you have a trusted beta reader?

For my epic And Then We Danced fic, @erinaceina very generously read and betaed EVERYTHING. For the.... crunchier parts of the band AU I know I can always send stuff to @stripedroseandsketchpads first before posting live. And Kay will even read most SW drafts when I'm mired in self-doubt and loathing! :') (clowned myself by writing one of her squicks into the current wip though, so it's just me and the endless possibilities rn)

But generally We Die Like Men. It's not that I don't want a beta reader for the other fics, it's just I've never bothered going to look for one. Usually I don't write things with enough plot to worry. I don't know how I got through my old Cassian/Jyn longfic on my own tbh, no cheerleader, no beta! Loyal readers were very ready to point out flimsy aspects of the plot :') so having learned from that I would definitely get a beta for a fic like that if I did another (well, the ATWD longfic proves that).

3. First person or third person?

Usually third person, but I've written at least one fic in first person - it seemed to fit 'Cornelius Hickey's' ego.

4. Past tense or present tense?

Usually past tense, but I can't explain why the Andor fic all wanted to be in present tense. That's just how it came to me. Probably something about wanting to not subconsciously be thinking of how it all ends :')

5. How long do your fics tend to be?

Longer than is decent or desirable, generally. I know this is a feature/bug of not really planning stuff and just writing on vibes, I'm mostly at peace with it.

6. Multi-chapter or one-shots?

The one-shots have an unfortunate habit of growing lore/sequels/prequels.

7. Rarepairs? Yea or nay?

Oh very much YEA. I have obviously written for big ships too (I stand by my Jyn/Cassian love), I don't go out of my way to pick the rarepairs, but god they're just so much more fun. Writing for them, reading them, fandoms for them - it's all so much better. The shared headcanons, the emphasis on a couple of really significant scenes, the extrapolation from crumbs...

8. In character or ooc?

....why would I write for a fandom/character only to write it ooc? The best crackfic and satire is good because it's still in character.

....no. Not even a bit. I was never into spn, and my earliest fandom interactions were before it was invented. Werewolves? Sure. But just reading the words '[character] was in heat' brings me out in hives

I'm....really resistant to post-S1 Bix/Cassian and Bix/Brasso. Partly it feels like enforced heterosexuality. Partly I want her comfort and healing to come from community and her own working through it rather than a single magical external healer? Partly I want to know more about her and Timm still (Bix finding the most pathetic little man but genuinely seeming to care for him). Partly I'm petty.

I don't care for big unbalanced power dynamic ships or saviour/damnation type deals like R+ylo. Jyn/Krennic is such a huge NOPE. Reid/Cobden (this is mainly spite ok), Reid/Mimi. Crozier/Silna (lol book version what book version?). Ed/Calico Jack (it's my inner, petty Stede. Also I can't look at Will Arnett, I'm allergic).

It's canon, but Jerott/Marthe can still be a notp. The less I have to think about Anakin/Padmé the better, frankly.

13. Fluff or smut or both?

Oh smut, definitely. But smut that veers unpredictably from fluff to feels to fucked up and back to feels, ideally.

15. How do you come up with fic ideas?

I'm pursued by a scene or character or concept until it gets written down, I guess. Sometimes spitballing ideas with people helps, or just gazing lovingly at the same gifsets time and again.

16. Are you a planner or do you just write by the seat of your pants?

Pantsing. Sometimes when I'm already in too deep I'll sullenly plot out a few bullet points, but by and large I just try to dissociate until words happen.

17. Do you title you chapters?

Oh hell no, titling the fic is hard enough

18. Overused words or phrases that just make your eyes twitch?

I probably don't read enough fic to have a list of these. I try not to be a Britpicker, but I like to read fic that's been properly researched, where the setting and language has been considered so obvious oversights around the setting can be off-putting.

19. What's something that you struggle with as a writer?

Oh, the big picture, passage of time type stuff connected with a solid plot and plan. I zoom right in on scenes and mannerisms and expend thousands of words on not very much happening, and then I read a fic that is so succinct and well conceived and covers several years in a character's life and leaves no wiggle room at all but is like. 3-5,000 words? And I just die a bit because how do you do that?? But I'm trying to be happy with what I write anyway - it's a different approach and it suits the way I'm able to find time for writing these days.

20. Any writing advice?

Leave your shame behind and just write what you want, how you want! Tag well and post it because you enjoyed creating it and maybe someone else will enjoy reading it! Also don't be afraid of restarting a draft from scratch, but don't delete anything you've written - keep those files. And probably just...go for a walk or a shower or whatever and have a think away from the draft for a bit, things will often be clearer with some distance.

To be honest, it's finals week and I decided to put this album on while studying so I didn't really listen to the lyrics so much as the melody and beat. Thoughts under the cut cuz I had a lot of em

TLDR: My fav was Uninvited and and my least fav was Running to the edge but I loved the whole thing

I know this EP was technically about the marauders but I don't think I would've been able to tell most of the time if I hadn't been told. TBH I'm not really into HP anymore but the music is good.

All in all I really like the sound of Chloe Ament's voice. She's kind of like acoustic Chloe Moriondo with better drums. I really like the drumming. I just think it's neat.

Destiny: I liked it even though it was a little slow and sad. She has this little run where she gets high and that scratched my brain. nom nom solid song.

2. Uninvited: LOVED THE START OF THIS ONE. I don't know what it was. But the start was so good. The rest of the song is solid but the first 30 seconds I was enamoured.

3. Antidote: Didn't like this one as much as the first two. I wasn't that into the pacing but I can see this song on a girlboss playlist. I'd listen to this song if I were going to commit arson.

4. Running to the edge: It's a sad song. Yeah. It goes on the sad playlist. I caught the lyric "i've been searching for closure but i'm not sure it wants to be found". I had to look up the lyrics for this song. They are chef's kiss. Mwah mwah really liked this one. (I don't think the person analysing the song on genius knows it's about the marauders because they go deep) (Pretty sure this one is about remus or sirius and not like. war crimes. but okay.)

5. Until the end: I liked the rocky feel of this one. it's just very fun. Wasn't really listening to the lyrics but the one's I caught were very good. I'll have to come back and read them after finals are over. Yeah I can tell this one is about James and Lily. Still good. kind of really sad. I try not to engage with hp anymore but this song. It brought back being 11 years old again. RIP james and lily.

overall impression... hmm. same as kai=kai, nothing stood out to me in particular, if you throw them all into a playlist i couldn't tell which song belongs to what album or most of them apart, tbh. both previous solo albums had outstanding acts to me (wisiwi, tetsugiri uta, adios, qualia and avatar alone in hologram, and zalinero, genshou no hana, hananokage, and shinnyuusha from genshou no hana) but in this one while most are good they all just feel brand hirasawa sound hirasawa with nothing catching my attention in particular. not thrilling. then again i am exhausted out of my mind so maybe that's why... i'll give it another couple listens on a fresh mind

Song of the Week

I have already listened to a couple of these, and have high hopes for the rest.

Honorable Mentions:

The girls have been killing it this past month or so. In a group of a lot of strong returning contenders, it is nice to hear something as self assured as Dalla from a relative unknown, Nody Cika. I particularly like the hook into every chorus, which is beautifully sung.

I think Between Survival & Romance is promoting being yourself, if only based on the video, which is one part very strange, and then also one part incredibly endearing? The song forgettable, but I doubt I will forget about it because of how adorable and memorable the video is. I’m not sure if that is a win or not for Lee Seung Hwan.

Chang Ki Yong is not enough to make me sit through a Brown Eyed Soul track. It nearly is, but not quite.

I almost didn’t give Limesoda’s Wave a chance. And honestly, the verse still sort of bores me. But the chorus is fun and the hook has a great mix of a quietly driving beat and a fun vocal line. It was enough to catch my attention for a group that debuted 2 years ago, but that I don’t remember at all.

The best part of Super Junior’s I Think I comeback (besides being the first full comeback with everyone out of the military yay!!!) is the fact that Donghae posted the whole video on his YouTube channel, because he has one, at the same time as SM posted it on their channel. It’s a mood honestly. The song is solid, with just a bit of sexy that Super Junior has absolutely earned. I still like The Crown better. Also, I hate both Leeteuk and Donghae’s hair, Leeteuk unilaterally, and Donghae in the video specifically.

If you like dance, you will probably enjoy the video for Standing Egg’s Ironic, which has some very pretty choreography for the MV.

I am well connected to the Monsta X fandom, because of a very good group chat, so I knew about Somone’s Someone before it dropped. And it is probably going to be chilling a playlist pretty damn soon, because it is hitting that Western pop summer bop pretty damn hard. Hopefully it is a good lead in to a much more Korean release from them at the end of the month, so that they can kill both markets (because this is a really solid track).

Let’s talk about Zico’s releases this week, Daredevil, Human and  Extreme. They all hit on different style, most which he has done in some way or another in the past. It sort of reminds me of the range that GD did on his album Kwon Ji Yong. Daredevil is probably the most predictable, with a group of rappers on a single track, produced by Zico, tending towards the more popular sound. This is directly in Zico’s wheelhouse. Extreme is the next most obvious in my book, a hard hitting rap track, on a beat that doesn’t let up, and with a rhythm that shows why Zico has the respect of the rap community, even as an idol. Finally, there is Human, which is solidly a ballad, in the style of a simplified track at the beginning, before building. It is also predictably my favorite, with my favorite rapping of the trio, and vocals for days.

Okay, so Jopping is a bop, but I can’t really get over the fact that Kai teleports in the beginning, because apparently even if he isn’t with EXO, he still has super powers. I also didn’t quite realize how rap skewed this group was, enough that Kai had a line that was more vocal than rap, and Taemin and Baekhyun got to basically own the whole vocal line. And you know the live of this is going to be so so so so good. It feels a lot like Maxstep did when it came out: a condensation of the music that the top groups from SM would put out if they were solely in the business of making pump up music. Tbh, I’m here for it. It wind over a pretty competitive week for the same reason that The Crown won last week: I’m a sucker for a song that you take the stage to.

emma by jane austen - im bypassing sherlock holmes ahh sorry that too has been super significant and influential in my life but i haven’t talked about emma yet! i read it in 2017/when i was 12 and starting high school and- i guess it was one of introductions to literature, yknow? or classic literature more specifically i suppose ,, twas also my introduction to the school library aka my one and only saviour throughout high school— besides in general i had a good time reading it and i would discuss it with my english teacher and that was nice

catcher in the rye by j.d. salinger - i’m more tentative to include this and a lot more uncertain because i don’t really talk about it plus the book is so often considered a Red Flag buuut, i read it sometime in 2019(?) and my reasoning for including it is similar to emma but also because i had such a shit time in high school and angsty teen holden was pretty comforting to read hmdnfjsj (also essentially any book i read during school [not for school, that is] is very dear to me and is worthy of a spot on this list<33)
