Dacey on Quarantine Creativity, Falling Asleep to Bill Burr, and āBroccoliās Keeperā [Q&A]
Vancouver-based band Dacey is the latest act to grace the cover of Spotifyās āFresh Finds: Indie.ā Lead singer Dacey Andrada, guitarists Justin Tecson and Waterfall Eyes, bassist Joshfrompomo, and drummer Marco Marin are taking the Gen Z world by storm with their hazy brand of genre-bending DIY music. With a Mac Demarco-like nonchalance and a Steve Lacy-esque groove, Dacey sits comfortably at the intersection of bedroom pop and alternative R&B.Ā
āBroccoliās Keeper,ā the bandās newest single (out now on KitsunĆ© Musique), is a woozy tribute to dro. With an effortless lilt, Andrada lays down lyrics about getting high on your typical afternoon over a jangling guitar instrumental.
I had the pleasure of catching up with frontwoman Dacey over email last week to pick her brain about āBroccoliās Keeper,ā creativity in quarantine, and falling asleep to the dulcet tones of Bill Burr.Ā
Ones To Watch: Who is Dacey?
Dacey: My name is Dacey Andrada, and Iām the lead singer of the band DACEY, Iām a singer-songwriter born and raised in Vancouver BC. I make music with elements of alt-R&B, neo-soul, lo-fi hip hop, indie, and jazz.
So, youāre based in Canada, and first met at the Nimbus School of Recording and Media in Vancouver. How have your cultural surroundings helped shape the music you make today?
Iām a second-generation Canadian, I was born in Vancouver BC, and was raised in a Filipino household with both music-loving parents. As a kid, I grew up listening to my dadās music collection, which consisted of burnt CDs, cassette tapes, concerts pre-recorded onto VHS tapes, and vinyl. We had an array of genres, including artists such as the Beatles, Elvis Presley, Ella Fitzgerald, James Brown, Jackson 5, Etta James, Stevie Wonder, David Bowie, the Beach Boys, and Amy Winehouse.Ā
I was a four year old who stood on top of the family coffee table as if it were a stage, entertaining guests with my fake Britney Spears headset microphone. It wasnāt until grade school that I realized I was mostly drawn to, and most passionate about Motown, Jazz, R&B, and Funk. In high school, I played bass in jazz band and sung in jazz choir, which contributed to my growth of very niche jazz music.Ā
From then on, I slowly started writing my own music around the age of 11, progressively discovering my style in writing as the years went by.Ā At the beginning of high school, I began listening to new artists that were in and changing the game. I gradually grew my love for hip-hop, neo-soul, indie alternative, and immediately fell in love with the music of Tyler, the Creator, Kanye West, Anderson .Paak, SZA, Hiatus Kaiyote, Mild High Club, Mac Demarco, and Thundercat.
When did you realize music was something you wanted to seriously pursue?
Growing up, Iāve always had a passion for music. So ever since I was little, Iāve always wanted to be a performer. It wasnāt until after high school, I realized right away that the dentistry route wouldnāt be for me, I then started performing all over Vancouver.
How have you been staying busy in quarantine? Have you picked up anything new?
Iāve been recording for our upcoming EP, It is currently in the process. Iāve picked up biking, hiking, and long walks. Last year while I was still in school, it had been hard for me to stay physically active because I would always be in the studio either recording or producing for my classes. I would say I have been the most active this year due to quarantine (which isnāt a bad thing lol).
Walk us through your songwriting process. How has social distancing affected yourĀ creativity as a group?
Usually during band practice or whenever we all get to be in the studio, either one of us would come up with a chord progression, then we all add our parts and jam it out. I would then take a recording of it, bring it home, then write to the piece. Otherwise, I would come up with a chord progression first, sometimes the lyrics would have already been written, and bring it to the studio to show the band, then jam it out until we see fit. Since quarantine started, it has slowed down our creative process and our workflow, since we werenāt really able to meet up as much to make new material. However, weāre slowly getting back into the groove and grinding it all out.
Whatās your go-to āinteresting factā when you do icebreakers in class?
I like to sleep with podcasts from my favourite comedians on. I can easily fall asleep to Bill Burr.Ā
āBroccoliās Keeperā is such a fun name - how did you come up with the idea for the song, and more importantly, who is Sir Pablo?
āBroccoliās Keeperā is derived from the term brotherās keeper. It is a metaphor for a person whoās in charge of the kush. I was inspired by the song āAddictedā by Amy Winehouse, and I sort of based the song around herās and especially around my experiences. Itās just about how greedy you have to be sometimes with your dro. Sir Pablo is anyone who mooches off you way too often, and is a weed fiend.
Are there any artists you would like to tour with or collaborate with in the future?
So many! I would love to collaborate with Tyler, the Creator, Anderson Paak., Tame Impala, SZA, Kali Uchis, Steve Lacy, and Mac Demarco one day! I feel like Iām missing someoneā¦
Whatās next for Dacey?
Weāve got a new single coming out in September! Weāve got our EP coming up in the next few months, canāt really pinpoint a specific date, but itās real soon! Weāve also got a music video for āBroccoliās Keeperā dropping.
Who are your Ones To Watch?
Hamb Sun, an artist also based in Vancouver! Heās super dope, and his style is really unique. He really makes it his own.

āāā Ā BLAKE LIVELY. TWENTY NINE. CISFEMALE. SHE/HER. ā· do you hear palm dreams, by hayley kiyoko? that must be marin beaufort. she has been living in san francisco as a lifeguard for seven years. during that time they have earned the reputation of the heliophilic. it makes sense you know, they can be headstrong and devil-may-care but letās not forget theyāre pretty effervescent and sagacious.
hi lovelies! the nameās caro (she/her), iām 20 and i live in the boring old est timezoneĀ ā it has been the longest 48 hours of my life, since my familyās moving and weāve had a time and a half getting things set up. but, iāve been itching to get back into roleplaying for awhile now and i figured this group was too beautiful to pass up! i havenāt had time to set up any of her pages yet (we literally just got internet 4 hours ago, lmao) so thatāll be a task for later on in the week, but for the time being, thereās a bit about marin beneath the cut that should do the trick! i love plots so please feel free to hmu in the ims xx
marin (pronounced muh-RINN) was born and raised on the east coast, just her and her father. her father was a fisherman off the coast of rhode island, and she spent quite a great deal of time on the waters. could swim before she could walk. wanted to be a mermaid when she grew up. her most prized possession is a shark tooth necklace her fatherās brother gave her for christmas one year after a trip to hawaii, and still to this day she never takes it off.
the two of them lived in a small coast-town, and marinās father didnāt want for her to get pigeonholed there like he had. rhode island was meant to be a stepping stone for them, but heād wound up getting stuck there after her mother abandoned them when marin was four months old. everyone knew everyone in town, so marin was something like a big fish in a small pond, and was rather content with that. her father wanted so badly for her to utilize her potential and get out when the time for college came - he pushed her hard academically so sheād be able to go somewhere outside of RI on scholarship, and marin wound up graduating valedictorian of her class. she decided on cal state long beach for college, majoring in marine biology - can take the girl away from one ocean, canāt take the ocean away from the girl.Ā
marin felt much more at ease in long beach despite missing her father terriblyĀ - he was her partner in crime, the best friend sheād ever had - as sheād always been an independent spirit and able to function in a place where she knew nobody (something her father claimed she got from her mother). marin thrived in california. she made plenty of friends, partied a fair bit, learned how to surf, and really felt like sheād found her place in the world. beneath it all she had a plan, and was determined to stick to it: sheād get her masters, maybe even a phd, find a job where sheād make enough money that her father could retire and move out west with her.
her senior year of college was a disaster, to put it shortly. before fall semester started, marinās father revealed that he had been diagnosed with lymphoma. sheād been adamant about taking the semester off to stay home and take care of him, but heād been just as stubborn about her going off to school and finishing her degree. sheād gone (nearly kicking and screaming) and had an awful semester, barely staying afloat in her classes, grateful when it was time to come back home for winter break. heād declined rapidly to her horror, and she was insistent she not go back for the spring. it wasnāt what he wanted though, and she inherited his stubbornness - he wanted her to go. she went begrudgingly, making plans to come home at any potential break in the semester she could find. it crushed the both of them when he wasnāt able to come out for her graduation, just like theyād planned. she came back home that summer to spend time with her father, and he wound up passing away that july.
after her fatherās passing, someone on marinās motherās side of the family reached out. she was informed that she had a younger sister, and marinās struggled with that revelation ever since. she was given her contact information, and it sits at the back of a drawer in her bedroom while she stillĀ continues deliberating on whether or not she should reach out. itās been y e a r s, lmao, but marin has a lot of mixed feelings on it and doesnāt know if she even wants to let that into her life. her fatherās passing was incredibly hard on her, and she got good at being the only family she needed, picking any other family she felt she wanted from the people she met after moving to san francisco.Ā ( for the time being, iāll write this as a npc until someone picks up the wc ! )
san francisco was where her father ultimately wanted to move out to, and marin decided sheād move there after the funeral to feel a little closer to his spirit. sheās been there for the last seven years.
diagnosed with celiac disease at the age of eighteen, marin made it an effort to start a healthier lifestyle. even though her metabolism was already fairly high and she hadnāt shown any other signs of an unhealthy body, marin wanted to make sure that it wasnāt an option. she became a dietary vegan shortly after graduating high school and started an intense workout regimen consisting of an hour to two hour run each morning on the beach, as well as taking up pilates, and has kept up with it over the years.
despite having her degree in marine bio, marin found a job working as beach patrol when she moved to san francisco and fell in love with it. she canāt imagine herself doing anything differently anymore, even if it is a job that only works from march to november. money is not something that marin has ever been consumed with ; marin values happiness and contentment in her soul than she does financial stability. in the off seasons (and on the side) marin works as a freelance photographer.
sheās the heliophilic, which is basically someone thatās attracted or drawn to sunlight. obviously, spending as much time on the beach that she does, she loves being in the sun, but i feel like marin is an embodiment of sunlight, in a way ; sheās warm and loves being surrounded by other people, going out, making every second of her life count (a cruel lesson she learned from her fatherās passing).Ā
marinās very good at getting other people to let her in but sheās not very good at letting others in, tbh. sheās also super headstrong, like you canāt tell her anything once sheās made her mind up and is a lil bit on the reckless side?? sheāll do what she wants because lifeās too short and sometimes thatās dangerous - it leads to her accidentally hurting people or making mistakes that have heavy repercussions, and when that happens, she has NO idea how to cope with it (or rather, she does, itās just not a very good way to cope, lol)
i want every single connection or plot there is so please like this and iāll pop in your imsĀ
and if you read this far: the reason this stupid vine is my ooc tag is bc i have an ex named kyle who is a piece of trash and that vine is a p accurate description of how i feel about himā¦..plus it just makes me laugh ok going now
#ć ā¢ā¢ šš ššššššššššš ; what the fuck is up caro.#rush.intro
