I like to talk from time to time about the bodies of the gods and appearances of deities, and one of my traditional things is fighting the endless idea of the "gym-god" visual. A long, LLOOONNGG time ago I had stored one of the rare posts evoking fatness as a positive thing and an official trait of gods and mythologies - unfortunately the post is now gone but Internet Archive was there to save the day!
It was a post by the blogger devdutt, about the religion of India and the depictions of Hindu deities - specifically called "The Yaksha's potbelly". Here is a copy of the text below:
Published in Devlok, Sunday Midday, April 03, 2011
We live in times when men and women dream of having a body without fat. Female models in fashion shows become famous when they look thin and starved. Male models and Bollywood heroes become famous because of musculature, especially a six-pack abdomen. A far cry from the traditional notions of beauty.
To be fat, in ancient and medieval times, was a sign of affluence, that one had enough to eat. Musculature was associated with being a laborer, thinness with poverty. Hermits could be thin, servants could have muscles, but the beautiful had to have soft rounded bodies and the rich had to have potbellies.
The modern notions of male beauty have its roots in Greek sculpture where heroes were shown with well-toned bodies, each muscle depicting artistic precision. These have spread via media to our homes. Bollywood heroes today therefore emulate Greek gods. Even modern poster paintings of Hanuman and Ram and Shiva show them with musculature befitting a body builder, very different from the soft delicate features that Raja Ravi Verma painted.
In sacred songs, Hindu goddesses are described as having ‘deep navels’, ‘full breasts’ and multiple ‘love-handles’ on either side. To have a bony frame was the sign of an old witch and associated with fearsome Tantrik goddesses like Chandi and Dhumvati. Temple images show goddesses as being of ample proportions, full but not fat. Modern notions of feminine beauty, is also influenced by Western ideas, where softness has been replaced by firmness, as the feminist movement saw the former as a sign of weakness.
Kubera, treasurer of the gods, is visualized as a potbellied deity. His protruding stomach embodies a bag that is bursting with money. In traditional India, to have a potbelly was seen as a sign of prosperity. Men and women who did not become fat after marriage were seen as belonging to a loveless or unsuccessful marriage where there was not enough food to feed. Today, a potbelly is seen as a sign of disease, the accumulation of abdominal fat that leads to heart disease.
This medicalization of the potbelly has hurt Ganesha the most. Ganesha, the most popular Hindu deity of the 21st century, is lambodara, the one with a huge belly. It is the container of wealth. He is the god who removes all scarcity and provides food for all. He is associated with vegetation and wealth. His favorite sweet, the modaka, is shaped like a moneybag. His belly represents a warehouse of a farmer that is full of grain. Around the belly is the snake that stops rats from stealing the grain.
Increasingly, artists are visualizing him with muscles and a flat abdomen, in keeping with modern notions of beauty. It is ironical, that symbols associated with poverty in traditional India are becoming images of health and beauty in modern times. Softness and roundness is acceptable only in comedians and villains, while heroes and heroines tend to be more firm and sharp. Perhaps this shift indicates a shift towards a culture that is less gentle and more aggressive – celebrating the gym more than the dining table, muscle more than fat, protein more than sweets.
And it even had this cute little image to go with it:

From Sizzling Steaks to Spicy Curries: A Look at the Role of Men in Cooking Across Cultures
Cooking has always been considered a predominantly female domain, but the tide is slowly turning. Men are increasingly taking up cooking as a hobby or profession, and it's about time we acknowledge and celebrate their contributions. From sizzling steaks on the grill to whip up spicy curries, men across cultures are putting their unique spin on traditional dishes and creating new culinary trends. In this article, we take a closer look at the role of men in cooking across cultures. We explore how men break stereotypes and challenge gender norms in the kitchen. We also delve into food's cultural significance and how men use cooking to connect with their heritage and communities. Whether you're a seasoned pro or a novice in the kitchen, this article will inspire you to embrace your love of food and experiment with new flavours and techniques.
Historical Context: Men in Cooking Across Cultures
Cooking has been a part of human civilization for thousands of years. In ancient times, hunting, gathering, and cooking were primarily done by men. As societies evolved and became more complex, women were often relegated to the domestic sphere, including cooking. At the same time, men took on roles outside the home, such as hunting, fishing, and farming. This division of labour continued for centuries and became deeply ingrained in many cultures.
Despite this history, there have always been men who have defied gender norms and taken an active interest in cooking. In medieval Europe, for example, male chefs were highly prized and sought after by royalty and the wealthy. In Japan, the art of sushi-making was traditionally passed down from father to son. In many African societies, men cook during special occasions and celebrations.
Modern-Day Men in Cooking: Breaking Stereotypes
In recent years, there has been a growing trend of men taking up cooking as a hobby or profession. This trend can be attributed to several factors, including the rise of food culture and celebrity chefs, the increasing popularity of cooking shows and competitions, and the changing gender roles in society.
One of the most visible examples of this trend is the rise of male home cooks and food bloggers. Many men now share their recipes and culinary creations on social media platforms like Instagram and YouTube. These men are breaking stereotypes and challenging the notion that cooking is a feminine pursuit.
The Benefits of Men Cooking: Health, Family Bonding, and Creativity
Cooking is not only a fun and creative activity but also has many benefits for men's health and well-being. Cooking at home allows men to control the ingredients and portions of their meals, leading to healthier eating habits and a reduced risk of obesity and other health problems. Cooking can also be a great way for men to bond with their families and friends. By cooking together, men can create lasting memories and strengthen their relationships. Finally, cooking can greatly increase the outlet for men's creativity and self-expression. Experimenting with different flavours and techniques can be a fun and rewarding experience.
Cultural Influences on Men’s Cooking: Steak and BBQ in America, Curry in India, and More
Food is an integral part of the culture, and many men use cooking to connect with their heritage and communities. In America, for example, grilling and barbecuing are often associated with masculinity and are famous for men. Many men take pride in cooking the perfect steak or ribs. In India, men have traditionally been the primary cooks in many households, and curry-making is considered an art form. Many men are also using cooking as a way to explore other cultures and cuisines. For example, Japanese chefs are becoming increasingly popular in the United States, and many men are learning the art of sushi-making.
The Rise of Male Celebrity Chefs and Influencers
The rise of food culture and the popularity of cooking shows and competitions have led to the emergence of male celebrity chefs and influencers. Chefs like Gordon Ramsay, Jamie Oliver, and Anthony Bourdain have become household names and have inspired many men to take up cooking. Social media platforms like Instagram and YouTube have also given rise to male food bloggers and influencers, who use their platforms to share their recipes and cooking tips.
Men in Professional Cooking: Challenges and Opportunities
While men increasingly take up cooking as a hobby, there is still a significant gender gap in the professional cooking industry. Men make up the majority of executive chefs and restaurant owners, but women are often relegated to lower-paying and less prestigious positions, such as line cooks and pastry chefs. This gender imbalance is slowly changing, however, as more women enter the industry and demand more opportunities for advancement.
Tips for Men Who Want to Explore Cooking
If you're a man interested in exploring cooking, many resources are available to help you get started. Here are some tips to help you on your culinary journey:
Start small: Begin with simple recipes and work up to more complex dishes.
Learn the basics: Mastering basic techniques like chopping, sautéing, and roasting will help you build a strong foundation for more advanced cooking.
Experiment with flavours: Don't be afraid to try new ingredients and flavour combinations. Cooking is all about experimentation and creativity.
Practice, practice, practice: Like any skill, cooking takes time and practice to master. Don't get discouraged if your first attempts don't turn out perfectly.
Have fun: Cooking should be an enjoyable activity. Don't take it too seriously, and don't be afraid to make mistakes.
Embracing the Changing Role of Men in Cooking
In conclusion, men increasingly take up cooking as a hobby or profession, and it's about time to acknowledge and celebrate their contributions. From sizzling steaks on the grill to whip up spicy curries, men across cultures are putting their unique spin on traditional dishes and creating new culinary trends. Men are breaking stereotypes and challenging gender norms in the kitchen, and this trend is only set to continue. Whether you're a seasoned pro or a novice in the kitchen, we hope this article has inspired you to embrace your love of food and experiment with new flavors and techniques.

Get to know the blogger - medical edition
1. Why did you choose medicine as a profession?
I didn't find anything else interesting enough. Not to sound too cliché but I just can’t see myself doing anything else every single day 30-40 years from now.
2. When did you know you wanted to go into medicine?
Nana’s cardiac surgery (and my mom’s influence when she got me a doctor’s set to play with.) 🩺
3. Which specialty do you want to practice?
Internal Medicine and then eventually Cardiology 🫀 but I like Paediatrics too!
4. Which specialty did you want to practice when you started med school/nursing school?
Cardiothoracic surgeon (I ended up preferring the medical side over surgical)
5. What was your best moment in medicine? In no particular order:
🦴 Getting scrubbed in every time during my Orthopedics rotation and actively assisting the surgeries at an Intern level (not just retraction/suturing) multiple implants, hip replacements, ilizarov fixation, amputation, casts and slabs. “Interns are Tigers” is what the Orthopods said lol.
👶🏽 Intubating and performing a lumbar puncture on a neonate.
🔥 I was working at the Emergency Department during my first few days of Internship when a mass casualty came in consisting of 30 patients with different degrees of burns at a sugarcane factory nearby, I was sh*t scared initially but this experience taught me good team dynamics with all departments in an emergency situation.
6. What was your worst moment in medicine?
During initial nights of my IM rotation as an intern (in India interns are still like med students and not residents) My junior and senior resident incharges went to sleep and I felt helpless when a patient suddenly stopped breathing minutes after snoring loudly, at this point I wasn’t allowed to intubate without supervision and the residents on-call were just not ready to get up. The patient died eventually and I was crying at the staircase till 4am.
7. How does the medical education system in your country work?
5.5 years of MBBS,
3 years of PG Residency,
2+ years of Super Specialisation/fellowships
and multiple Quack practices. 🦆
8. Favourite medical fun fact?
Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy (Broken Heart Syndrome) shows apical ballooning so the shape of the heart is similar to that of a takotsubo (たこつぼ) a round-bottomed, narrow-necked vessel used to catch octopuses. 🐙
9. Funniest/weirdest thing that happened in one of our classes/rotations?
When a professor way older than me said “You have beautiful eyes” referring to me, on the mic, in the middle of a lecture. 🎤
When a resident tried hitting on me (still a student) and I rejected him but later he became my doctor when I had COVID *awkward*
10. Surgery or internal medicine?
Internal Medicine ✨ (although I do respect surgeons, they’re more fun to be around.)
11. What is your best study advise?
Revise. Slow progress is still progress. Let go of your ego, you won’t retain your knowledge if you don’t revise and eventually people will get better than you and you’ll be left behind.
12. Do you study at home/at the library/elsewhere?
Home (sometimes at the library pre-pandemic)
13. Why and when did you start your medblr?
I’ve been on Tumblr for over 10 years, somewhere during my clinical years I thought I needed to document my life in Medicine so I made a blog for it.
14. How do you treat yourself when you achieved a goal?
Good food and shopping!
15. How do you handle failure/bad critiques/mistakes?
During my internship I saw a lot of incompetent doctors (referring to my point no. 6) It motivated me even more to do my best to not be a doctor like that and only take constructive criticism and learn from my mistakes. Having a mentor helps a lot too.
16. Favourite hospital movie/TV show?
I think my username answers this question, it will always be [Scrubs]
17. Worst hospital movie/TV show?
A certain medical show named after a famous book with never ending seasons, more drama, less medical accuracy. *ahem*
18. Which patient’s/relative’s behaviour annoys you the most?
When they call me a nurse even after correcting them and are extremely rude to me because I’m young. 🥺
19. What would you do if you didn’t work in medicine?
Artist travelling around the world. 🎨
20. What do you like to do when you’re not in school/hospital/studying?
Sleeping for the most part, Anime/Manga, painting sometimes, social media and some cooking these days.
21. Do you have somebody that inspires you?
Dr. Cox & JD from [Scrubs]
My Mentor
Dr. Rohin Francis (Medlife Crisis)

New Life!!!
Marriage!
A commitment altogether to create a new entity.
As an Indian girl (newly married), moving away from home, leaving back everything you’ve known for 28 years for a place that is halfway across the globe; the commitment to create a successful marriage tipped the scale to it’s highest levels. Let me begin by saying that in my 28 years of life, not once I had to stay away from family more than a week. Our culture is very clear in these matters and staying with family (parents, siblings and their kids) is seen as a strength rather than a weakness as in the western cultures here in the U.S. Hence, for me the shift from India to the U.S. was a major one and yet a disturbing one. To clarify, it wasn’t disturbing because of my husband 😉 . Mr. R is an amazing soul who empathizes with me and I have been lucky enough to have found someone so supportive.
It became disturbing for me on a personal level; just the thoughts that go on in an idle person’s mind. Idle – again a huge step I had to take after my marriage. Back in India I worked as a professor at a college and kept myself busy with professional as well as social agendas. After moving to the U.S. my first difficulty was to become a house-wife as working under H4 visa was restricted. Going from being occupied 18 hours a day to just cooking all day drove me crazy; especially from the fear that I wouldn’t want to do this all my life. Also the fear on missing out – the famous FOMO, on the professional front. My second difficulty and by far the most disturbing one mentally turned out to be on the social front. I have friends from work, school, college, clubbing etc. in India but here finding someone with the same as well as a compatible wavelength was getting tougher. I encountered a lot of them with kids and they all had a pretty occupied schedule to let a new friend into their lives. The pathetic part was due to the 13+hours of time difference between both countries, I couldn’t stay in much contact with my friends back in India. Finding the right time to communicate with family and friends was challenging and thereby it reduced the number of times I spoke to them.
With these two challenges keeping me on high alert most of the times emotionally, an understanding partner made the journey a bit easy to survive. Mr. R kept pushing me to do stuff to challenge my brain with better activities. My hobbies are reading (no restrictions on the genre), collecting books (have about 131 books currently), writing (a vivid blogger) and of course dancing (makes me happy all the time). Sadly, after moving here, I had given up on all four because my mind was distracted in trying to adjust to the new environment it found itself on. Mr. R is a big time foodie or I’d rather say a food critic; hence I began accepting that right now I need to make the most of all the idle time I have. I started finding solace in cooking and reached out to my other hobbies simultaneously.
To elaborate, I started with 9 things to do:
I organized my time to prepare a schedule every night for the upcoming day.
I broke down my day into before cooking and after cooking to avoid spending all day in the kitchen.
Before cooking was simple; taking a bath and doing some gratitude affirmations.
The time when I’m cooking, I video call my parents everyday in India and we discuss about the day (as it’s night time then in India). I try at least one new dish every week either for lunch or some snack during tea.
Also I make sure to keep my mind occupied while I’m cooking, so I watch F.R.I.E.N.D.S. or listen to music, do some random dancing steps and cook.
I have Mr. R come home for lunch as office is very close-by, so lunch time is always pretty easily spent with good company.
Now comes the challenging part – trying not to doze off after a good lunch at home; so I joined a library which has girl’s book club every month. I keep myself occupied by reading in the afternoons. Sometimes maybe watch a movie or two 😉.
Evenings always start with a hot cup of Tea and my laptop out on the patio in the presence of the setting sun. It absolutely sets the mood to write everything that’s on your head and directly from the heart.
Finally, we (Mr. R and I) have made it a habit to hit the gym before dinner at least fives days a week.
So this is how I made peace with the new me that moved across oceans to set a life of her own. None of these were a solution to my two difficulties I mentioned earlier, but you know what? Now it seems less of a difficulty. I realized the key was keep yourself occupied. Definitely, this is just a short-term plan so that my mind stays healthy and happy and I get to concentrate on building a beautiful commitment named marriage. For the long-term, there are thoughts that I want to implement. So stay tuned with me, on my journey to recreate myself.
So long, my friends!

Controversial Mumbai
Mumbai (aka Bombay until 1995) is the largest Indian city with more than 21 million people. This is the economic and cultural center of the country: the offices of the world's most famous corporations, fashionable hotels, and haute couture shops are located here. In the world-famous "Belollywood," most Indian films and TV shows are filmed. People from all over the country and worldwide flock here searching for a better life. And yet Mumbai is home to the largest slums in the world! Mumbai is different from the rest of India: both in its colonial architecture, which is breathtaking, and in how organically representatives of different cultures and religions coexist here. When you get to Mumbai, you seem to be transported from dirty, noisy India to Bombay of Kipling's time and, despite the life boiling around, it seems that time has stopped. Travel blogger Elena Volkova tells you what to do in this fantastic city.
Mumbai is a city where poverty and wealth do not coexist so organically in the world. The city's business center with major attractions, hotels, restaurants, bars, and nightlife is located in the south in the Colaba area. In the north of Mumbai, there are world-famous slum quarters.
In the mid-90s, the city underwent a large-scale renaming. Therefore, get used to the fact that almost any landmark or institution has two names: the old well-known and the new, as a rule, difficult to pronounce. Until now, many establishments in Mumbai have been called Bombay.
Prepare for Indian food to be your most poignant experience in life. And this is provided that you ask when ordering: "No spicy!". Even if you have never had stomach problems, be sure to bring a pack or two of casual and antihistamines (the latter just in case). Gastal can be taken before meals - you can't go wrong! Well, be sure to always carry an antiseptic with you, generously lubricating your hands with it before any meal.
Mumbai's nightlife is in full swing until 2 am. After all the establishments are closed, in the city this is strict. Bars are usually open until midnight. Most nightclubs prefer Indian music!
Life hacks from me:
Haggle like the last time in your life! Know, an enterprising Indian for the first time calls the price at least two times higher than the real one. It would help if you bargained for everything except food, medicine, and prices in government institutions (transport, post office, etc.). Retail prices are already printed on food and beverage packaging by manufacturers.
Currency. In India, money is changed not by banks but by special exchangers with the Currency Exchange sign. They charge a fee of 7% of the amount and set not the most favorable rate, so it is better to change it on the black market (both from dollars to rupees and vice versa). In Mumbai, it is profitable to change money at Colaba Causeway (Shahid Bhagat Singh Road). Just walk along the market street, and the money changers will come up to you. You have to bargain for the course! Focus on the official exchange rate minus a dozen or two Indian cents. The more you change the amount, the better your rate.
Internet. The strictest security measures have been taken in connection with the 2008 terrorist attacks in Mumbai. This is primarily reflected in the availability of communications and the Internet. It may well happen that your roaming stops working in the city. There is no access to Wi-Fi in public places, only in rare cafes and restaurants and in hotels of medium and high price categories. At the same time, to connect to the network, they may be required to present a passport and restrict access during the day.
If you need to always be in touch, you should connect a local SIM card. 1 GB of mobile Internet will cost about $ 4-5. Can do this at any street stand with the icons of mobile operators. Colaba Causeway (Shahid Bhagat Singh Road) and Bharucha Road are at every step. To connect, you need a copy of your passport and visa, two photos 3x4, and, optionally, a receipt for the hotel payment. Activation of a purchased SIM card can take from several hours to a couple of days. This process is quite complicated and consists of the fact that the mobile operator carefully checks your data and calls the hotel to confirm that you are staying there. Can use the SIM card all over the country, and you can top up your account anywhere.
India's airports are allowed only upon the presentation of an air ticket. Make sure that it is downloaded to your smartphone. If you arrive and leave the airport, you will not be allowed back because the key has been used. Therefore, try to change money or withdraw it from an ATM in the airport building; it will be almost impossible to do this on the street.
