The Divorce of Lady X (Tim Whelan, 1938)
Tumblr media
Merle Oberon and Laurence Olivier in The Divorce of Lady X
Cast: Merle Oberon, Laurence Olivier, Binnie Barnes, Ralph Richardson, Morton Selten, J.H. Roberts, Gertrude Musgrove, Gus McNaughton, H.B. Hallam, Eileen Peel. Screenplay: Lajos Biró, Ian Dalrymple, Arthur Wimperis, based on a play by Gilbert Wakefield. Cinematography: Harry Stradling Sr. Art direction: Lazare Meerson. Film editing: Walter Stovkis. Music: Miklós Rózsa.
Screwball comedy movies, in which an otherwise sober and respectable male, usually a lawyer, a professor, or a businessman, is prodded into absurd behavior and outlandish situations by a giddy, beautiful, and usually rich female, seem to be a particularly American genre. They may have their antecedents in the French farces of Feydeau and Labiche, but they need that American sense, particularly common in the Great Depression, that the rich are idle triflers, not to be trusted by everyday hard-working folk. Which may be why the British attempt at screwball seen in The Divorce of Lady X is a bit of a misfire. Merle Oberon plays the madcap lady in the film, who delights in deceiving and annoying the barrister played by Laurence Olivier until he inevitably falls in love with her. One problem with the film lies in the casting: Olivier's vulpine mien is not one that easily expresses naïveté, which the barrister Everard Logan must possess in order to fall for Leslie Steele's wiles, when she allows him to believe that she's really the scandalous Lady Mere. The real Lady Mere is played by Binnie Barnes, and the subplot revolves around the desire of her husband, played by Ralph Richardson, to divorce her, with the aid of Logan in the dual role of both barrister and corespondent -- how he got into that predicament is the rather clumsy setup for the film. Barnes and Richardson are far better suited to this kind of comedy than Oberon and Olivier, and they contribute some of the more amusing moments in the movie. It's filmed in the rather wan hues of early Technicolor, which only contribute to the general sense of underachievement.

Klappentext

March 8, 2021: The Thief of Bagdad (1940) (Part Two)
We need a One Thousand and One Nights franchise.
Tumblr media
All I’m saying is that we need more movies in this franchise. Culturally conscious films that are made using native actors from the correct regions of origin. Like...come on. That would be great. And have them link to each other in subtle ways!
They could be live-action or animated, although there’ve been two films made by massive studios based on the works. Some were hyper-successful, and some were...less-so. Which sucks, because that less-successful one had some STELLAR animation, lemme tell ya. Love you, Eris.
Tumblr media
Seriously, though, can we get on this? Somebody make a series of animated shorts or something; I’ll be a voice or a character designer if you need one! I’m in, is all I’m saying.
Anyway, let’s get back to the show, shall we? Part One is here!
Recap (2/2)
Tumblr media
Ahmad and Abu are blown out of the water by Jaffar’s storm. Meanwhile, Jaffar takes the Princess back to Basra, on her urgings. There, she tells her father that she doesn’t want to go with Jaffar to Bagdad, and he says that she doesn’t have to if she doesn’t want to. Which makes the ULTRA-SIMP Jaffar unhappy.
He makes a new toy for the Sultan, a mechanical version of a Hindu goddess with six arms. And it looks...fucking cool, I’m not gonna lie. The Sultan seems to agree with me.
Tumblr media
Jaffar convinces the Sultan to give the automaton a hug (Hays Code again, huh?), and the Sultan does. Which is when the toy stabs him with a knife! Well...casual regicide there, OK.
Meanwhile, Abu’s woken up on the beach of the island, although Ahmad hasn’t. While there, he discovers a mysterious vessel having washed up on the shore. He opens it...and you know EXACTLY what happens...and it’s actually pretty neat.
Tumblr media
This is the Djinn (Rex Ingram), an angry magical blue-headed giant who’s been imprisoned for TWO THOUSAND YEARS, which can give you SUCH a crick in the neck. See, the Djinn has been a little pissed off all these years, and promised that he’d kill the first person to set him free. However, clever kid that he is, Abu tricks him into going back into the bottle after all that.
Tumblr media
Desperate to get out, the Djinn promises Abu, yes, ABU the wishes, not Ahmad! Interesting, huh? Abu wastes the first wish on some sausages (that genuinely look pretty goddamn good), but then asks the Djinn to give him a say to find Ahmad, although he doesn’t wish for it. The Djinn says that to do that, he must use the All-Seeing Eye, which he cannot conjure. Instead, he can take Abu there to steal it for himself. And when Abu agrees to this...they take off. Literally.
Tumblr media
Huh. Neat! Gotta say, for 1940, I’m digging the special effects of this film so far. I mean, to be fair, they’re effects from 1940 for SURE, but they’re pretty good for 1940 effects. Anyway, they make it to the mountain temple where Abu is to steal the All-Seeing Eye. This leads to a stunningly detailed sequence that...honestly, I can’t give justice to. Just watch it! There’s giant spider-webs and spiders, a pit of octopi, a giant statue of a Hindu goddess, it’s honestly a great sequence.
Abu gets the Eye, and he uses  it to find Ahmad, who’s in...Utah.
Tumblr media
Yeah, that’s just straight-up Utah. OK. Abu wishes to be reunited with Ahmad, and there goes his second wish! They reunite, with the Djinn in tow, and they use the Eye to see Jade (what I’m calling the Princess). She’s about to smell a rose given to her by Jaffar, mostly against her will.
Tumblr media
But OH NO! It’s the Blue Rose of Forgetfulness! Really! Not a joke! She smells it, and she forgets everything about Ahmad, and about herself. Presumably about Jaffar as well. This breaks Ahmad’s heart, and he lashes out in sorrow. This causes an argument, which causes Abu to actually use his last wish, sending Ahmad back to Bagdad. Fuckin’ WHOOPS.
The Djinn, in the meantime, fucks RIGHT off, leaving Abu stranded in Utah. Looks like there’s a fuckin’ Genie of the loose in the world now. Maybe he’ll go to Disney World, I dunno. Ahmad, meanwhile, goes for revenge against Jaffar. His mere simp energy fuels Jade SO MUCH that she overcomes the BLUE ROSE OF FORGETFULNESS to regain the energies of the TRUE simp of her heart, Ahmad.
Tumblr media
He’s fighting the guards at the moment, and Jaffar won’t STAND for being out-simped, and he chains up both Ahmad and Jade, who pledge their love for each other. Ahmad also apologizes to Abu, hoping that he’ll find out somehow. But Abu, angry and sad that he can’t help his friend, smashes the All-Seeing Eye on the ground. Doing so transports him from Utah to ANOTHER GODDAMN PLANE OF THE UNIVERSE
Turns out that Abu’s actually opened up a portal into the Land of Legend, presided over by the Old King (Morton Selten), who has been trapped in the Eye with his people. In gratitude, he names him the new prince of this realm, and gives him a magic crossbow, as well as...well,, the one thing that hasn’t appeared in this movie yet.
Tumblr media
As Abu heads to Bagdad on the carpet, Jaffar is about to execute Ahmad in front of his Princess waifu. In the background, the prophecy from before is being read, about the destruction of the tyrant as done by a boy riding the clouds...or, y’know, a magic carpet. Abu flies in at JUST the right time, as Ahmad is about to be beheaded.
He fires his crossbow and kills the executioner, saving Ahmad and causing chaos in the town square. Jaffar absconds with Jade, and ties to get away on that flying mechanical horse from earlier. But with the crossbow that never misses, Abu hits Jaffar right in the FACE, and the horse falls to pieces as they plummet to the ground.
Tumblr media
Nice. Ahmad is reinstated, and he marries Jade. He appoints Abu, the little thief, as a future Grand Vizier. As he pledges to get him a proper education, Abu decides to get on his carpet and have some fun! He flies off into the rainbow.
Tumblr media
And that’s The Thief of Bagdad! Wow! Lot of thoughts, which I’ll disseminate in the Review. See you there!

Mal gucken was mir als Nächstes einfällt 🤔
Vorschläge sind wie immer gerne willkommen !
Harry Potter x DDF

9 Surprising Factors You Cannot Drop off to sleep.
This month I made a set of grown-up measurements bibs for the Dinner for 2 February project over at Hopeful Posts. But also for academics like me-- a reporter coming from abroad-- the dinner is tied to an organization that permits those of us on the outside to obtain a glance from just what that media partnership resembles as well as utilize it to educate our jobs. Pair of things our company tried today for supper (as well as a lot of our team just liked): Spicy Flash Container Carrot Soup (not very zesty and provided over rice) and also Morning meal Enchiladas with Ranchero Sauce (put together in the early morning, inhibited the refrigerator, and after that appeared the oven at supper time-I affection when I can do that!). Those fries are rather hilarious, yet the tacos, made upped of attractive marinated pork shaved right off the revolving trompa as well as topped with avocado crema are actually possibly the supreme economical eat on the Strip. Simply dinner time observed by mattress time, along with the anticipation from standing up and performing it all once more.
Tumblr media
I will be much more than satisfied to get your absolute best, as well as worst, instances from a dinner style as those for whom this article is striven could do with all the aid they could receive. To all those interested - If you don't such as affordable dog meals, do not supply this to your pet dogs. MIDTOWN - MCCRAY'S ... great pub food items, exciting delighted hr kinda place ... 2 chili bedogs economical and also lots of draft beer to decide on - Scott S. My book's adventure to the display screen started when I fulfilled Selena Gomez and also her mommy, Mandy Teefey, for a sushi supper.
Tumblr media
The trick to supplying a significant supper gathering crowd - we are actually speaking 10 people or even more - is to keep your menu inexpensive, and also low-maintenance. It is actually exceptionally tough to locate tasks nowadays however think of performing your job hunt along with a handicap. Tasmania's immaculate and ice chilly waters are mentioned to become a crucial ingredient in the effectiveness of its own whiskies. While our team get on the fish and shellfish learn, complainer cakes definitely qualify as a recipe that appears tough yet are in fact basic. Hefty winds transfer tonight around midnight, so our company'll be carrying out a tornado tie-up either on arrival or even right after supper. Trimming Time was final Sunday, and also after virtually a http://cyrillonlineblog-sport.info/von-der-varikosette-brennnessel-vor-allem-die-samen-oder-blatter-die-wurzel-selten-gegessen/ decade of keeping lamb I could say Cold weather Antler finally has this down. After the trip zoomed through, our team had enough opportunity just before dinner to walk a couple of blocks around the fourth and consume additional from the celebration as well as the traditional summertime weekend enter the one-fourth. Our company had the happy hour applications at Morton's for dinner - an extremely reasonable way to eat at the typically spendy steakhouse. Located this on Pinterest (and also didn't also have to Google you to find the best LINK!) and made this for supper this night.
Tumblr media
After the second edge has been preparing for about 4 minutes, proceed as well as add in the fresh tomatoes that you have actually cut up. Then, add the new basil that you have diced in to ribbons, the chilly butter, the minced garlic, and also you are going to most likely desire to add some more kosher salt and black pepper to period the sauce. A staycation - think supper parties, movie endurances as well as long, silent times of analysis - is actually a simple, low-cost means to reset as well as unwind. I ask yourself how they will even be handled by press secretary, Sean Spicer, when, you, his supervisor, refuses to also relate to dinner and also satisfy all of them.
