Black History Month: Simon Nkoli
âI am black, and I am gay. I cannot separate the two parts of me into secondary and primary struggle. They will all be one struggle.â
Simon Nkoli was born in the late 1950s in the Black township of Soweto in South Africa. He grew up under apartheid, and first became involved with anti-apartheid activism as a student, despite negative reactions within the movement to his homosexuality.
In 1984, Simon was arrested along with 21 other men while protesting rent increases in the township of Delmas, a group which became known as the Delmas 22. While in prison awaiting trial, Simon was outed, and faced backlash from the rest of the group, many who feared that pulic knowledge of his sexuality would negatively impact the outcome of the trial. To the surprise of his co-accused, Simon received an outpouring of support from the international queer community, which in turn led to greater international support for the Delmas 22 and anti-apartheid work.
Simon was ultimately acquitted, and began work as a founding member of a new group, GLOW - the Gay and Lesbian Organisation of Witwatersrand - fighting for the rights of queer people in Johannesburgâs Black townships. Simon was diagnosed with HIV while in prison, and focussed especially on HIV/AIDS activism in Black communities. With GLOW, Simon went on to organise Johannesburgâs first Pride march in 1990.
In 1994, Nelson Mandela became South Africaâs president, marking the end of apartheid. Simon met and negotiated with government officials to ensure the rights of gay and lesbian people would be enshrined in the countryâs new constitution - the first country in the world to do so.

Black History Month: Gladys Bentley
Gladys Bentley was famous in New Yorkâs Harlem in the 1920s and 1930s. One of her early gigs was at the Clam House - a popular queer venue. There she caught the attention of writer Langston Hughes, who remembered: â âŠMiss Bentley sat, and played a big piano all night long, literally all night, without stopping ⊠from ten in the evening until dawn ⊠Miss Bentley was an amazing exhibition of musical energyâa large, dark, masculine lady, whose feet pounded the floor while her fingers pounded the keyboardâŠâ
Gladys was famous not just for her piano-playing, but her dirty improvised lyrics, and her masculine dress. From an early age, Gladys was more comfortable in masculine clothing - her trademark performing outfit was a white tuxedo. She was publicly known to be interested in women, and might even have participated in one of 1930s Harlemâs female-female weddings.

]Image] honesty is key. Its not always possible to know every answer. I teach chemistry. I had a student ask me a question that requires knowledge of very complex quantum mechanics to answer. I could easily answer what but not why. I did know the very basics of it but it would have been incomplete and confused the class more. So I said I didnt know. Often youre asked a question that is outside to scope of the course. Its impossible to know all of history even if you study it. Theres always gonna be another civilization or event. If you dont know thats fine if you still know plenty of other stuff.... Got an opinion about this? See what others are saying.... Black History Month: Marsha P. Johnson
Drag queen and activist Marsha P. Johnson was a well-known face in New York Cityâs Greenwich Village, where she lived on the street for many years. She is best remembered for her generosity and kindness, happily giving away her belongings, or spending her last two dollars on cookies to share around.
In 1970, along with fellow activist Sylvia Rivera, she founded STAR - the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries - which aimed to provide food, housing, legal aid, and other necessities to homeless trans youth.
Marsha was assigned male at birth, but described herself as living life as a woman, and worked tirelessly to support her trans community.

Mini Travel Guide to Vienna, Austria
Welcome to Vienna!
It is better to read this post while listening to...
Baroque streetscapes and imperial palaces set the stage for Vienna's artistic and musical masterpieces alongside its coffee-house culture and vibrant epicurean and design scenes.
Top 5 Attractions #mustsee
Schönbrunn Palace / The Habsburgs' overwhelmingly opulent summer palace is now an Unesco World Heritage site. Of the palace's 1441 rooms, 40 are open to the public; including the private apartments of Franz Josef and Sisi, and the precious 18th-century interiors from the time of Maria-Therese.
Hofburg Palace / Nothing symbolizes Austria's resplendent cultural heritage more than its Hofburg, home base of the Habsburgs from 1273 to 1918. The oldest section is the 13th-century Schweizerhof (Swiss Courtyard), named after the Swiss guards who used to protect its precincts. The Renaissance Swiss gate dates from 1553. The courtyard adjoins a larger courtyard, In der Burg, with a monument to Emperor Franz II adorning its center. The palace now houses the Austrian president's offices and a raft of museums.
Stephansdom Cathedral / Viennaâs Gothic masterpiece Stephansdom is Vienna's pride and joy. A church has stood here since the 12th century, and reminders of this are the Romanesque Riesentor (Giant Gate) and HeidentĂŒrme.
MuseumsQuartier or MQ / With over 60,000 sq metres of exhibition space â including the Leopold Museum, MUMOK, Kunsthalle, Architekturzentrum and Zoom â the complex is one of the worldâs most ambitious cultural hubs.
Belvedere Palace / A masterpiece of total art, Schloss Belvedere is one of the worldâs finest baroque palaces. Designed by Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt (1668â1745), it was built for the brilliant military strategist Prince Eugene of Savoy. What giddy romance is evoked in its sumptuously frescoes halls, replete with artworks by Klimt, Schiele and Kokoschka; what stories are conjured in its landscaped gardens, which drop like the fall of a theater curtain to reveal Vienna's skyline.
Top 5 Things to Do #donotmiss
The iconic Spanish Riding School
The National Zoo at Schönbrunn Palace
Burg Theater definitely worth a visit
Goldenes Quartier for shopping and walking
Neue Burg for a day with the Knights and their armors
Plus +
Visit Prater for a #funday
Visit the Albertina Museum, check out the main stairs of the museum from a distance and you will see a Van Gogh ;)
Walk alongside the Danube Marina
Go Cart
Top 5 Places to Eat #yummy
Demel at Kohlmarkt for iconic Viennese pastries
Cafe Central for the most amazing Chocolate Viennese
FiglmĂŒller for traditional schnitzel
Sacher Hotel for eating the iconic Sachertorte
Vapiano at MariahilferstraĂe for Italian food
Plus +
Hard Rock Cafe near Stephansdom
Any Bakery for a Pretzel
Tip! From the mid of November until Christmas, Vienna's prettiest squares transform into magical Christmas markets. The aroma of Christmas baking and hot punch sets the mood in the run-up to Christmas!
Extra Tip!
View the Lights on the Graben and KĂ€rtner StraĂe. Walk under thousands of crystals and giant chandeliers bringing an imperial ballroom atmosphere to the main pedestrianized areas in the center.
P.S. I have visited Vienna twice so far, in February 2015 and Christmas 2016 and both times the city was different in my eyes! My third visit will definitely be in Spring time - to be able to walk in all its blooming parks and gardens :) #cantwait
