I was disappointed to hear that The Last Voyage of the Demeter was mediocre. I may be able to suggest a possible pick-me-up alternative though? Having not (yet) managed to get my hands on a copy, I can't speak to its quality, but towards the top of my book buying list is a queer horror novella about Dracula's voyage to England; José Luis Zårate's "The Route of Ice and Salt". It seems to have good reviews, so perhaps you (and hopefully I) would enjoy it?
ooh, i'll have to add it to the list (and the pile. the pile that ever grows and never shrinks)
(why hast thou forsaken me, library, and closed down the 'suggest a purchase' page that art my beloved?)
my favourite demeter-adjacent book will probably always remain vlad the undead in which a university student discovers the journal of the demeter's captain, as dictated to her great-grandfather.

Youtube Music and Why I’m Not Feeling Lucky
Tumblr media
My struggles with finding a good way to have my music with me on the go are well documented. I was a huge CD guy and was purchasing new discs as recently as 2011 (I know, I’m a geezer). When it came to finally digitize my tunes and get them into my pocket, I went with a Zune as my chosen platform. At the time, I had my reasons. I know it was a weird choice that ultimately became a forgettable joke in Guardians of the Galaxy 2, but LOVED my Zune. Then in 2015 it died and I was stuck between a rock and a hard place. As you can see I’ve written about this struggle a bunch. So much so that I wrote an entire Blog about giving up on Microsoft.
For the past 3 years I’ve been a happy user of Google Play Music. Two of those years have had me as a paying subscriber to the service. Yes, a man that literally has a tattoo celebrating the act of Music Piracy has been paying $10 a month for the convenience of all the music, all the time. Outside of a few annoying organizational quirks, GPM has been more than good to me. Every Friday I add tunes to my library and listen until my heart’s content.
Last month Google announced that GPM would ultimately be replaced by Youtube Music and that the Premium Youtube video service would entail an additional fee. On the surface, it doesn’t seem like that big of a deal, but given my history of being screwed by these types of changes, I feel I should point out a few ways the dissolution of GPM will likely pork me over. That way, when it happens, I can point back at this post and scream “I TOLD YOU SO!!!!!!!”
Let’s break this down.
Tumblr media
1. The Digital Locker
GPM offers a digital locker for you to store your personal collection, on top of the music they provide with the paid service. I have dozens of albums that either aren’t available in GPM or are bootlegs or are so obscure, I’m the only person still listening to them. Currently, I’m able to build playlists and organize my collection with my odd locker content right beside my paid GPM content.
I don’t see Youtube music bringing this legacy feature over. The music industry is in the middle of destroying the concept of owning music. Bringing that feature over would take work that would ultimately be off brand, and not generate any profit. It’ll probably end up being an afterthought that never gets thought of again.
Tumblr media
2. Playlists
I have lots of playlists...lots...probably too many. I’ve put hours into building them with the assumption that they would be there when I need them. I mean you never know when you’ll need to hear “10 Best Hoobastank”, you know? I’m going to be HOT if these playlists don’t transition over.
The potential problem is only compounded by the possibility of the digital locker content being gone. If the locker content is gone, but the playlist transition, I’ll have a bunch of playlists with holes in them.
Tumblr media
3. Editable Metadata
This one is also potentially a back-breaker. One of the key things that bugged me about going digital in the first place was not having a decent way to see my most recently released music. To combat that, when my library was still manageable, I changed every album’s “Genre” tag to the year the album was released. Since then, every time I add a new album, I do the same thing. This has allowed me to jump directly to “this year’s” music in the genre tab of GPM.
This whole process is predicated on having the ability to edit the metadata of library songs. Again, if the digital locker feature doesn’t come over, Youtube Music would have no incentive to allow metadata to be changeable. All the music would be added by the artist, and its accuracy wouldn’t be questioned, therefore allowing it to be changed doesn’t make sense.
Tumblr media
4. Play Counts
This one isn’t that big of a deal, but it still bothers me. GPM has always been bad at play counts. From some of the plays never hitting the server to digital lockers not registering in the system to artists refreshing the album causing the play counts to zero out, I can’t be confident that they are right. However, at least they are there, and I can get some idea of what I listen to the most.
Most importantly, over the years I’ve had multiple systems tracking play counts. First, it was Windows Media Player, then it was Zune, then it was the Zune website. I would LOVE to see those totals today, to bask in perspective, but ultimately its all lost. GPM was my chance at a permanent solution. Having thought I’d finally found a place where I play counts would be safe, the announcement of Youtube Music makes me think I’ll be starting at zero again.
With all these things on the table, here’s my official plea.
Tumblr media
Dear Google,
I know you read everything. Please read this and understand that I know my needs are weird, but at this point, you might be my only hope. I don’t want to cancel my subscription, but If some of these things don’t make the transition, I might have to jump ship. Right now I’m actively wondering if Amazon still offers a digital locker service...I don’t want to wonder about that. Do the right thing and throw this geek a bone. As you can see, I’m exhausted (mostly due to Microsoft) and you’ve been good to me so far. Don’t make me regret choosing GPM.
Sincerely,
Sergio Lugo II

No information about the company or the people involved with goli nutrition is available on the official website. This is not untypical of the faceless online world.

But it is all a little mysterious.
Do you remember when bottled water was released?
Well the gummy marketing is a bit like a man running through the street naked whooping and and hollering with a bottle of  water raised above his head.
It is easy to get caught up in the hype but let’s take a deeper look.
Remember to read the round up of expert and customer reviews at the end it is insightful.
but first come with me while I guide you through the maze of of truth and half truth so you get the real  information you need.
What Are The Benefits Of Goli Gummies?
There are numerous claimed benefits you can experience when supplementing with Goli Gummies. These benefits include:
Appetite control and weight loss
Reduction in blood sugar levels
Improved complexion
Better digestion
More energy
A stronger heart
Body detoxification
Improved immune system
To verify the claimed benefits we are going to have to look more closely at the ingredients used, and how the gummies actually work.
Helps digestion www.verywellhealth.com “ACV enjoys a fairly popular reputation for enhancing digestion. The rationale is that ACV enhances the secretion of digestive enzymes and increases stomach acid, both of which would help you to optimally digest the food you have eaten. Unfortunately, there is not a lot of scientific evidence to back this theory”
Improves your complexion. www.realsimple.com  Dr Gathers “While it may be helpful for some people’s skin issues, it’s important to know there haven’t been any good studies to support the claims people make about using ACV as a skin treatment.”
www.refinery29.com.  Dr. Fichtel and Dr. Mack both Dr. Fichtel and Dr. Mack both stress that those with extremely sensitive skin will do better avoiding ACV altogether. “I would not recommend this for patients with sensitive or dry skin,” Dr. Mack says. “Due to its acidic nature, malic acid is innately irritating. People who have very dry skin, eczema, or even facial redness or rosacea may experience flare-ups of their conditions and are more likely to develop a contact allergy.”
Helps detoxify your body Mary Wirtz, R.D.N., L.D.N., of the Mayo Clinic Healthy Living Program “It’s important to remember that with these fads—these crazes—there’s a lot of unknowns,” adds Wirtz, “and people fail to realize that these things can actually harm your body.” Vinegar can irritate the lining of your throat, stomach and digestive tract, especially when taken on an empty stomach, and may create acid reflux-like symptoms. Plus, there’s no evidence that frequent use is safe long-term.
Enhances energy. Scientificamerican.com “The effect of vinegar on your metabolism is so modest that it is unlikely to result in noticeable weight loss unless it is combined with other strategies, such as eating less”
What are the Ingredients of a Goli Gummy?
Apple cider vinegar (5% acetic acid) Organic Beetroot Organic Pomegranate Vitamin B9 folic acid Vitamin B12
How Do Goli Gummies Work For Weight Loss?
The main ingredient of Goli Gummies is apple cider vinegar, which contains acetic acid.
Acetic acid is a short-chain fatty acid that dissolves into acetate and hydrogen within your body.
When consumed acetic acid can help promote weight loss. Let’s look at the various ways that it can aid your weight loss efforts:
 1. Increases Fullness and Reduces Calorie Intake
Apple cider vinegar promotes fullness, which will help to reduce your calorie intake  it does this by slowing down the rate that food leaves your stomach.
 2. Reduction In Body Fat and Weight Loss
Adding just 1-2 tablespoons daily can help with your weight loss efforts. It can also help you to drop body fat. Although  scientific findings are mixed regarding weight loss.
Other health benefits of apple cider vinegar include:
Lower blood sugar and insulin levels
Improved insulin sensitivity
Lower fasting blood sugar
Improved polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) symptoms
Lower cholesterol levels
Reduced blood pressure
Helps to kill harmful bacteria and viruses
Goli Gummy Side Effects
There are very few side effects associated with Goli Gummies, especially if they are used in moderation.
It is possible to have too much of a good thing, however.
Too much ACV can cause side effects such as:
 1. Delayed Stomach Emptying
One of the benefits of ACV is that it delays the rate that your stomach empties, but this can be an issue for certain people. Such as those with gastroparesis, a common condition in people who suffer with type 1 diabetes.
Those who suffer from this condition will encounter other issues such as heartburn, bloating and nausea.
 2. Low Potassium Levels and Bone Loss
It has been suggested that taking ACV in high doses can cause low potassium levels, as well as osteoporosis. A condition that can cause brittle bones.
In the one reported case doctors suggested that these side effects were caused by the high doses of apple cider vinegar leaching the vital minerals from the bones.
 3. Erosion of Tooth Enamel
The most common side effect of ACV, and one that you are unlikely to face if you choose to use the gummies is the erosion of your tooth enamel.
ACV contains acetic acid that can damage your teeth, with studies showing a 1-20% loss of minerals from your teeth in just 4 hours
Because of these side effects it is always advisable to stick with the recommended dosage, and however tempting it is to take more than the recommended amount to speed up the results, I would advise you not to.
Doing so could lead to side effects and long-term harm.
Price Comparison Of Popular Apple Cider Products
Goli ACV Gummy $19 for 500mg (60 gummies)
ACV by Diet Works $8.94 for 500mg ACV (90 capsules)
Havasu ACV Diet Pills $16.95 for 500mg (60 pills)
Natures Bounty ACV $9 for 480mg (200 tablets)
 Goli Gummy FAQs
Here are some commonly asked questions about Goli Gummies:
 Are Goli Gummies FDA Approved?
While not FDA approved, they are manufactured in an FDA registered, cGMP certified, Kosher and allergen-free facility.
This means that the highest manufacturing techniques have been used and that your safety is paramount.
Can you take to many Goli Gummies?
Yes
500 mg is equivalent to two liquid teaspoons (10 ml)
15 to 30 ml is recommended for weight loss when used in liquid form.
For weight loss it is probably unwise to take more than 1500 mg or 3 gummies.
Be aware that 500mg is a common dose in ACV dedicated supplements.
What is the recommended amount of Goli Gummies to take?
1 gummy equals 500mg of ACV.  Two liquid teaspoons (30 ml) of ACV are equivalent to 1500 mg of ACV in capsule form. According to respected sources including “healthline.com”” and “livestrong.com” You should not take more than 2 teaspoons per day which is equivalent to 3 gummies per day (1500 mg per day)
The supplement instructions  “We recommend that adults take 2-6 gummies a day”
We caution using the above dose although the above recommendations of 2 teaspoons (3 gummies 1 gummy at 500mg) are based on the liquid form and take into account tooth decay 2 tea spoons still remains the recommended dose according to independent sources.
According to livestrong.com
“
.Apple cider vinegar is not a dietary supplement or medicine. For this reason, there are no set recommendations on how much you should take. Most health experts and organizations, including Harvard Health, suggest taking 1 or 2 teaspoons before or during your meals
..”
Healthline says

“
.The research that currently exists suggests that 1–2 tablespoons (15–30 ml) per day of liquid apple cider vinegar diluted in water appears to be safe and have health benefits
.”
How Much Weight Can You Lose With Apple Cider Vinegar In A Week?
The most scientific findings say ACV does not help with weight loss with some exceptions.
US National Library of Medicine
“During the 12-week treatment period, the subjects in each group ingested 500 ml daily of a beverage containing either 15 ml of vinegar (750 mg AcOH), 30 ml of vinegar (1,500 mg AcOH), or 0 ml of vinegar (0 mg AcOH, placebo). Body weight, BMI, visceral fat area, waist circumference, and serum triglyceride levels were significantly lower in both vinegar intake groups than in the placebo group. In conclusion, daily intake of vinegar might be useful in the prevention of metabolic syndrome by reducing obesity”
How Do You Protect Your Teeth With Apple Cider Vinegar?
There are a few methods you can use to protect your teeth when using ACV. One of the best ways is to:
Dilute the apple cider vinegar in water. Roughly 1-2 tablespoons of water with 8 ounces of water.
Drink the mixture using a straw to minimise contact with your teeth.
Make sure to rinse your mouth with water to wash away any remaining ACV.
Finally, do not brush your teeth immediately after consumption.
Of course, you could always use the gummies instead.
Do Apple Cider Vinegar Pills Work As Well As The Liquid?
Pills and gummies can both offer the same benefits as the liquid, but without the damage caused to your teeth. However gummies contain added ingredients, calories and sugar compared to plane capsules.
This makes them a much more appealing option for anyone looking to lose weight, who do not want to damage their teeth in the process.
Consuming apple cider vinegar in pill form also ensures you are not having to taste the vinegar itself, which is not a very nice taste if we are being honest here.
Do Apple Cider Vinegar Pills Make You Poop?
Unfortunately, there are some users who have reportedly suffered diarrhoea after using ACV.
Apple cider contains pectin that comes from fermented apples. It is a dietary fibre that acts as a natural gelling agent.
Pectin helps to form the stool and promotes the growth of good bacteria. However, if too much apple cider vinegar is consumed then water can be pulled from your bowel, leading to a stool that is more watery.
Should I Take Apple Cider Vinegar Pills Before Or After Meals?
I would recommend taking the Goli Gummies after your meal. It has been reported that taking the supplement on an empty stomach can cause nausea.
Pros And Cons Of Goli Gummy
Let’s look at the pros and cons of Goli Gummies:
Pros
The taste of Goli Gummies receives positive reviews
Gummies are an option for vegans
ACV may lower your cholesterol
Attractive packaging
Does not contain gelatin
With every order the give 6 months vitamins to a child with malnutrition
Cons
Contains more sugar than other ACV products
Contains more calories and carbs than other ACV products
Very expensive compared to other ACV supplements
Fails to mention possible side effects
The 30 day guarantee is obtuse it does not make clear if you can use supplement and still return it.
What The Experts Say About Goli Gummy
BBC Good food Guide
““Apple cider vinegar doesn’t really contain any vitamins or minerals, other than a very small amount of potassium, calcium and magnesium. There isn’t enough research at the moment to demonstrate that buying the ‘mother’ variety is any better for you than buying filtered. However, apple cider vinegar does also contain amino acids and antioxidants.” BBC Good Food Guide
 US National Library of Medicine
“Increased intake of dietary carbohydrate that is fermented in the colon by the microbiota has been reported to decrease body weight, although the mechanism remains unclear.” U.S. National Library of Medicine
 Sarah Flower, respected nutrition expert
“Drinking four teaspoons of vinegar before a high-carb meal helped to prevent blood sugar spikes. And if you’re counting your calories, research found that acetic acid stops your body from absorbing the calories from carbs.” Sarah Flower, respected nutrition expert.
Rhiannon Lambert, Harley Street is a prestigious location for top medical practitioners in London, UK
“The largest and most cited study I’ve found with regards to weight loss and apple cider vinegar included 175 Japanese, overweight, but otherwise healthy subjects. Over three months, they drank up to two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar. Results showed absolutely no significant difference between the placebo group and those who drank it.”
Healthline.com
“Acetic acid is a short-chain fatty acid that dissolves into acetate and hydrogen in your body. Some animal studies suggest that the acetic acid in apple cider vinegar may promote weight loss in several ways.”
For a round up of what other expert websites say about Apple Cider Vinegar go here
Here are selection of the best customer reviews of Goli Gummies:
“Apple cider vinegar is supposed to be good for you and I have tried drinking the stuff but I couldn’t tolerate it. After seeing adverts for these I decided to give them a try. They are very pleasant to eat but it’s too early yet for a verdict on improving health or well being.” J. Williams (5 stars)
“Does what it says on the tin. Great value for money when buying more than one, taste great and they do curb your appetite.” Annemarie (5 stars)
“Not been on them long but already noticing some differences. Appetite has dropped and bloating going down. Energy levels are up. Love the taste of them too.” Linda Jones (5 stars)
In Conclusion: Are Goli Gummies Any Good?
By this point, you are probably wondering do apple cider vinegar gummies work? Well, let me tell you that I do not think they offer value for money. If you don’t like the taste of liquid ACV the 2nd best option are capsules not gummies. Why? Well pills may be less tasty than gummies but they contain less sugar, calories  and they are a lot cheaper.
Apple cider vinegar has proven health benefits. That said the balance of the science does not support acv having a great effect on weight loss.  ACV can damage your teeth, but using the gummies will ensure this is not an issue.
If you are looking for a little extra help to achieve your weight loss goals then I would recommend using Goli Gummies.
I recommend ACV in moderation to lower cholesterol among other things as mentioned in the benefits section. However to find the most powerful weight loss supplements trending now check the top 10 list here.

“Acetic acid is a short-chain fatty acid that dissolves into acetate and hydrogen in your body. Some animal studies suggest that the acetic acid in apple cider vinegar may promote weight loss in several ways.”

  Who owns Goli Gummies?
Unfortunately the official website does not say much about goli nutrition. It is unclear where the company is based apart from being somewhere in the United States. No information about the company or the people involved with goli nutrition is available on the official website. This is not untypical of the faceless online world.
The slick online marketing of this company which pushed goli to no.1 spot on amazon  best seller list indicates a professional company with marketing budget –

Barbara’s Ovarian Cancer Story Part II
Ovarian Cancer: Process and Survival
Post Surgery
Read Part I for information regarding diagnosis and surgery

The next few weeks after my discharge from the hospital, were very busy. My sister, Nance, and my mom decorated the house and Christmas tree. My sister Lauren visited from Washington and cleaned, cooked and lent invaluable support to all of us. There were visits to the surgeon for follow-up and the oncologist for the initial visit. John and my sisters accompanied me. It was so very helpful to have someone else ask questions and write down information. It can be an overwhelming experience, especially when you’re a little “spaced out” on vicodin for pain management, as I was. I signed on to be part of a clinical study using different combinations of medications for eight instead of the normal six cycles. Laurie had brought a book with her that offered a lot of information on how to deal with an ovarian cancer diagnosis and subsequent treatments. One suggestion was to research clinical studies. There is a great deal of “cutting edge” research out there but you may have to hunt for it, do your homework, and bring the information to your doctor. My oncologist’s office was conducting a trial, I was accepted, and I was scheduled to begin treatment on December 21.
Even though I was dreading the whole process, I knew I had to approach it in much the same way I did the surgery, almost like an athletic event or a race. I wanted to go in as strong and as prepared as possible and with a better “attitude.”
Attitude is defined as a manner of acting, feeling or thinking that shows one’s disposition, opinion and mental set. We may not be able to control a situation, but we can choose our attitude about that situation- victim or fighter; passive or aggressive; depressed or striving toward joy and happiness; caught in the “why me’s” or searching for the “what can I learn from this.” With the help of many people and through much reading and research, my “attitude-adjustment” process unfolded.
A booklet entitled “Preparing for Chemo” suggests several things that I immediately put into action.
1) Get your hair cut short so that when your hair starts falling out, it’s less traumatic and won’t clog the shower’s drain. (This worked for the drains but I was still traumatized.)
2) If you plan to wear a wig, shop for it before starting chemo. My sisters and my dear friend and hairdresser Patty, helped with both of these steps. Watching my long hair fall to the floor was very hard and yet made me feel the tiniest bit more in control of what was happening to me. To my surprise, everyone loved my new hairdo. The compliments boosted my ego when I really needed it. Nance and Laurie accompanied me to the wig shop. Laughter is very good medicine-and we laughed a lot as we all played with the wigs before settling on two very nice ones. Four hundred dollars later I was armed with my hair prosthetics and a sore belly from laughing. At this writing, I am sporting my own very short hair after nine months of wigs and hats.
3) The booklet suggests having a dental check up and cleaning before starting chemo. Also important is giving your home a thorough cleaning and perhaps scheduling someone to come in once a week thereafter- a clean house can minimize exposure to infectious agents.
4) Building up strength through exercise and a good diet can help minimize some of the side effects of chemo. This booklet and other helpful literature, is available through oncology offices and offers good practical information. I also found the library and the internet to be good resources.
Shortly after my homecoming, from the hospital, I received a telephone call from Lindy, a volunteer with the Cancer Society (set up by my husband and the cancer support staff at the hospital.) She had been diagnosed and treated for Stage IIIc ovarian cancer seven years ago. Hearing from her gave me a real boost and some good tips for dealing with the upcoming chemo. She shared her experiences with surgery, hair loss and complete recovery! She is still cancer free! In addition to advice on make-up to camouflage the fact that one has no eyebrows or eyelashes, she told me how helpful acupuncture was for her. She felt that it really minimized some of the chemo side-effects and “rebalanced” her body’s energy. I had had a few sessions of acupuncture many years ago, and I immediately knew that this would be right for me. I believe in its efficacy and definitely feel the sessions have been very beneficial.
My first acupuncture session was four days after the first chemo treatment. The meds they gave me to prevent nausea worked very well. I didn’t have much of an appetite and felt a little achy and tired but the only real side effect I experienced was a terrible, hand-wringing itching and tingling in my hands and feet. Amy, my acupuncturist, has worked with several people undergoing chemo, is very knowledgeable, and had a good treatment plan in place for me. I scheduled to see her 2 days before and 4 days after every chemo session. After my first visit with her, I did feel better, more energized and the itching had definitely dissipated a good deal. She gave me some suggestions on supplements and some Chinese herbs to use.
The side effect of itching, burning and tingling is called neuropathy and is fairly common with the types of chemo protocol I was on. After my second and third sessions, the symptoms worsened! I turned to the internet to learn more about neuropathy and what, if anything, I could do about it. I found an article by Cindy H. Makencon, website: http://www.ovarian-news.org, entitled “coping-Tips for dealing with neuropathy.” She offered a great deal of helpful information including reports of studies on the benefits of taking fairly large doses of L-Glutamine Sulfate and Chondroitin. I forwarded this information onto Carolyn, the research nurse in charge of my clinical study, and she shared the information with the oncologist. I had already started taking L-Glutamine when I met with him. He had further researched and developed a new treatment plan for me which included large doses of L-Glutamine, a change in one of the chemo meds, and the addition of a medication called neurontin. The combination of all these things worked! The neuropathy gradually subsided and I’ve had no further problems.
I believe a few other factors contributed to my being able to handle the chemo pretty well. I continued to increase my exercise regimen, progressing to walking everyday and then back to the gym for step-classes, albeit modified, and lifting light weights. Exercise builds muscle strength, increases oxygen and blood flow and for me, was and is a real physical and mental energy boost.
I came across a book entitled: “Herbal Therapy & Supplements- a Scientific and Traditional Approach” written by Merrily A. Kuhn, RN, Ph.D. and David Winston, a herbalist and ethnobiologist. The book was part of an at-home study course that I needed to complete for my RN Continuing Education Credits. The book offers a comprehensive guide to many common and some less common herbs and supplements, their uses, adverse effects, contraindications, and drug-herb interactions. After careful research, I started using several herbs and supplements designed to minimize chemo side effects and boost my immune system. I was careful to use things that do not stimulate estrogen in the body as my cancer was estrogen-receptor positive. I started taking these supplements one or two things at a time in smaller doses in order to monitor any unfavorable reactions, before adding more. Most importantly, I notified my doctor that I was taking supplements and having acupuncture.
At the end of this article, I will offer a complete list of the supplements and herbs that I have been using and some information regarding the rationale for each of these additions.
For several months, our kitchen counter resembled a drug and supplement store. I had to write up a daily schedule of what to take when. It was worth it! Once the neuropathy was under control, I tolerated the remainder of the chemo treatments pretty well. I was able to work full time and exercise, and my appetite and energy levels were good. Physically, acupuncture, exercise, diet, and supplements were, and still are, valuable tools which helped me deal with the chemo and recover from its serious effects.
On another level, the emotional and spiritual aids were an even more powerful part of the healing process. Previously, I mentioned my visualizations regarding pre and post operative healing and seeing myself healthy and cancer free. Now, it was time to take it a step further and include it as a powerful adjunct to the chemo medications. Rather than seeing the meds as a poison, I started to visualize it as “nectar from the gods,” washing through me and being taken up by my immune cells as a potion to destroy cancer cells. A few weeks before my first treatment, I read an article about a young local girl who had battled cancer at age 16. She wrote a book about her experience and included her thoughts on seeing her chemo as “nectar from the gods.” I admired her outlook and incorporated it into my work. My husband, John, created a special tape for me to listen to while receiving the infusion of chemo. This guided exercise included relaxation, healing messages, and suggestions for picturing my immune cells taking care of things and using the chemo effectively. Before each chemo session, even before they started the IV, he would do a relaxation exercise with me. This ritual became a very important part of the process. By working on my “attitude” towards the chemo and by connecting with these parts of myself that can be powerful self-healers, I felt I was taking back control of what was happening. Feeling that you are part of the healing process instead of a passive receiver of medications etc., is very empowering.
Rituals and routines are very comforting, especially when you’re experiencing stressful times. My “chemo ritual” evolved from the very first session. The night before, I meditated and did my healing visualizations at bedtime. John drove me to the oncology center. I selected my chair and we settled in with his relaxation exercise. My sister, Nance, arrived bearing muffins and silly magazines. After visiting and chatting, John left for work and Nance and I munched muffins and laughed at the National Enquirer stories. About an hour before the infusion was completed, my brother, Tom, would arrive for a visit and to take me home. Somewhere in the session, my sister, Laurie, would call from Washington to check in and often John would “pop in” in his travels. I always had company and felt lovingly supported. Sabrina included me in her meditation every morning and my mom would stop by the day after the session for tea and a chat. Every three weeks from December 21 through May 27, we followed this routine. The nurses and my family got to know one another and we became a real team!
Returning to work seven weeks after surgery was another normalizing routine that made me feel like I was taking back my life. Except for the day of chemo and the following day, I have worked full time, feeling productive, healthy and normal. My co-workers have been very supportive and caring. They even threw me a graduation party to celebrate the completion of chemo.
Even before my last chemo, I was researching what to do to prevent a recurrence of the disease. I found information on a clinical study for Ovarex, a vaccine designed to prevent a recurrence of ovarian cancer. After many phone calls, letters and haggling with my insurance company, I was accepted into a study being conducted at Stanford’s Cancer Center in Palo Alto. It involved monthly infusions for the first three months and then every twelve weeks for the rest of the year, with routine labs and CT scans. I have experienced only mild side effects and feel fortunate to have access to one more tool.
This past year has been one of lessons for me. I would have preferred the “universe” had given me a gentle tap on the shoulder instead of this Giant Thump on the head to let me know I had things to learn about myself and how “I am” in the world. Here are some of the things I have learned from this experience:
1. Pay attention – perhaps if I had agitated more forcefully with my doctor that something was NOT right, she would have responded with more attention. LISTEN to your body and trust your intuition.
2. Don’t take anything for granted – people, job, health, hair. When you face the loss of these things, you realize how special people are, how the day-to-day routine of a job is a gift, how precious good health is and even how much better a “bad hair” day is than NO HAIR!
3. There are a great many sources of invaluable information out there through people, libraries and the internet. Taking advantage of these resources allowed me to create a comprehensive plan to restore my health and fight the disease using a combination of Western and alternative therapies.
4. We do have choices in how we deal with a crisis – probably the best choice for me was to reach out and ask for help. The more people I told about my health issues, the more positive energy came my way. I felt empowered rather than vulnerable and armed with my helmet (a wig, which, by the way, I got complements on) and my armor (acupuncture, supplements, chemo, prayers and visualization) I was ready to do battle. I was “Warrior Princess” instead of cancer patient.
5. Laughter is GOOD MEDICINE!
At this writing, my labs and CT scans are completely normal. I am back to my normal routines of work and exercise. I am sporting a “Jamie Lee Curtis” hairdo. I am excited about decorating and shopping for Thanksgiving and when we all come together, we’ll have a lot to be thankful for! Before we dig into our feast, I will be asking each person to write on a piece of paper, one thing that they are grateful for. Each of us will then withdraw one of these papers from the basket and try to guess who wrote the message. It will be easy to guess mine. I am grateful for all the love and support from my family and friends (with a special thanks to my son, Matt, and my husband for shaving their heads to support me and to my son, Mike, and his band for dedicating songs to me at concerts and their fund raising for the Cancer Society.) I am grateful for the prayers and best wishes that came my way from people I do not even know. I thank you!!! Well, of course, that’s more than one thing on my piece of paper but so what! It’s time to celebrate!
Happy Thanksgiving 2004 and celebrate every day of your life.

Running with the Marines
Tumblr media
This story begins on March 31, 2016 with an email.
Dear Jake Bostwick,
Congratulations! You have reason to celebrate as you are an officially registered participant in the 41st Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) to be held on Sunday, October 30, 2016 in Arlington, VA.
The MCM wishes you great success in your training. Thank you for your interest and enthusiasm for running “The People’s Marathon!”
Semper Fidelis,
Marine Corps Marathon
30,000 runners would be staging the start line and because I was chosen through a digital lottery system, I would be one of them. Thus started the seven month process of booking hotel rooms, buying airline tickets, running, deciding what monuments and museums to visit, more running, and more running. Tagging along with me on this trip would be my parents and my then girlfriend, Rachel.
Sunday October 30, 2016. 4:30 AM
Race mornings are unique. The mix of emotions would make for one crazy emotional smoothie roller coaster. You’re tired from the early 430 alarm, and the not being able to sleep from the night before. Your stomach hurts, either from being hungry or nerves, but usually both. There’s a since of doubt, thinking to yourself if I’m prepared for this race; have I done enough so I don’t kill myself out there. The anxiety knowing it’s finally race day but you still have a few more hours to go. And probably most importantly, the excitement. You finally get to partake in this 26.2 mile journey (especially this unique journey of getting to run by so much history) that you’ve been looking forward to for 7 months and it’s finally here.
To be honest, it’s stressful. I gotta make sure I eat early enough so that it’ll digest. I gotta get to the race with enough time to get through security and use the restroom and warm up and stretch and eat a little bit more and get in the corral and all the variables. But this morning I remember just being calm. This race I wasn’t going for any time goals or PR’s. I knew this race, this course, was going to be so memorable I almost could care less about the competition of the race or the need to do well. I never listen to music while I run so I hardly ever take my phone with me on runs and races. But knowing what I was about to experience, videos and pictures and taking it all in was my only concern this race.
The hotel food is spot on legit and this morning’s breakfast was no difference. Except the fact that it was full of runners all dressed up ready to go. Belly full, gear on, and bag packed, it was go time. The plan was Rachel and I would taxi to the Pentagon, which is where the runner’s village was, then once the race got underway she would meet up with the parents and they would meet me at various points throughout the race with extra fuel and liquid that I may need.
The taxi ride was harmless, traffic wasn’t too bad except for the dozens of charter buses. But we got to the Pentagon. So we started walking and eventually got to the security checkpoint, which was exactly what you’d expect security to be for the Marine Corp Marathon: marines! And lots of them. Between them and the police and other security it was definitely the safest place to be. We had gotten there early enough we hung out for away in the runner’s village, which was huge in itself being that it was one of the parking lots for the Pentagon. About 45 minutes to go I started making my way to the starting corral, which by the way was on a highway. They had shut down both directions of route 110 and opened it up for the sea of runners.
“The MCM start line is uniquely situated between the Pentagon and Arlington National Cemetery. The location offers a distinct reminder to runners that this is not just any marathon. Situated between those actively protecting our country and the fallen heroes, who for generations have given their lives for our freedom, runners immediately recognize the MCM’s 26.2 mile journey is about shared sacrifice. Everyone at this event has given something. The Marines and other members of the U.S. armed forces give of themselves in service to our country. The runners give themselves over to an active lifestyle, a commitment to physical fitness and a desire to achieve. Synchronized by the impeccable timing device attached to each runner’s bib, the MCM course pulses with the energy of give and take from these two contributing forces. Marines motivate runners. Runners gain the admiration of Marines. The result is a day of accomplishment, satisfaction and cherished memories.” -Marine Corp Marathon website
Walking down the highway towards the start is a surreal moment. It seemed loud from all the chatter of the runners and the multiple PA systems blasting loud pump music and the emcee giving out instructions and motivational talks, but quiet and calm too. You see the countdown timer and people retying shoes and syncing their GPS watches and doing some last minute warmup and stretches. Way up ahead I see the red and yellow inflatable start line you run under. There are crosses on my left from the cemetery that we had toured the day before. There’s already thousands of spectators with their home made signs and the news stations have their cameras all set up. The weather is perfect: cool, hardly no breeze, partially cloudy. This is one of my favorite parts of races, the calm and serenity before the gun goes off and the storm of the race begins. After the pre-race festivities of the national anthem, at 7:40 the boom of the M2A1 Howitzer, yes they use a real cannon to start the race, releases the wheelchair and hand cycle competitors. Now it was our turn.
15 minutes to go.
10 minutes. Retie shoes again for 4th time.
5 minutes. Make sure GPS watch is synced.
1 minute. High five random stranger
30 seconds. Hear a roar of an engine from behind me. Turn around and see the customary fly over by 2 Marine Osprey helicopters flying right over us and then

BOOM
The Howitzers release us. Commence running.
 Sunday October 30, 2016. 7:55 am
I was about a hundred yards from the start line so there wasn’t any movement for about 30 seconds. Then we started the penguin shuffle, which escalated into a walk, then a slow jog, then a few moments after the canon fired, my race started. At the beginning of each marathon I’ve done, the mood at the beginning when you get going is fun, with a little chaos. People are talking to each, dropping jokes like “Only 26 miles to go!, all while you’re trying to weave in and out of slower runners. For those of us that had run a marathon before, we knew the struggles and pain that would come at some point during the race. But for those first few miles, nobody, including myself, cared.
The race was a very flat course, except for the first 2 miles which were uphill. We all preferred a hilly beginning. With all the congestion, you really don’t get to your normal pace for a few miles until the race starts to spread out so it’s not like we were going to waste much more time or energy with these early hills.
The first few miles flew by. Running through city streets past businesses, the crowd support was already outstanding: loud and ruckus like a football or basketball game, except everyone was rooting for you. Between miles 3-4 we ran through an area with no buildings, no people, no cars, just a winding downhill road with very tall trees on both sides. A very peaceful section on the George Washington Memorial Parkway that ran parallel to the Potomac. Across the river I could see the tall steeple of the Georgetown University Library, and after crossing the Francis Scott Key Memorial Bridge between mile 4 and 5, we entered Georgetown. Some of the coolest little, old buildings were in this section, and the best smelling food. Along miles 6 and 7 we ran down a tree lined road and under some awesome historic stone covered bridges before making a U-turn to start heading back towards what I was most looking forward to seeing, DC monuments.
Mile 8 had us running right parallel with the Potomac River again on the right side, and the Watergate Hotel and the Kennedy Center on the left. Running under the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge we ran along the back side of the Lincoln Memorial, maybe a 100 yards away. I soon met up with Rachel and got some more fuel and liquid, best coach ever! After crossing Taft Bridge at mile 10, we entered the East Potomac Park area, and the Wear Blue Mile section.
The Wear Blue Mile lasts for a whole mile. And along both sides of the road are flags, volunteers holding flags, and pictures of fallen service members. A whole mile of fallen service members. I slowed down some so that I could try to see them all but there were so many of them. I recognized a few names like Pat Tillman and Michael Murphy but it was definitely the most memorable moment of the race for myself.
Miles 11-13 flew by and before I knew it I was already halfway there. And it was right around mile 13 that I could see the giant Washington monument and I knew more fun stuff was to come. We hopped onto Independence Avenue and got views of the Jefferson Memorial on the Tidal Basin, later passing by the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial and the FRD Memorial. Saw Rachel and the parents again and got more goodies from them. We then loop back along Independence Avenue on the side closest to the National Mall and saw the Korean and WWII Memorials. This area the crowds got even bigger and louder. Signs, air horns, banging sticks, they just kept going and going. Around mile 15.5 there it was, the Washington Monument. It was literally right there. Maybe a couple hundred feet away. I couldn’t help but slow down and look up at it. AND from a distance, the White House was in view. Pretty small, but in view.
The crazy thing about this race is the emotional and physical roller coaster it was playing on me. I had some inspiration and a high running through Blue Mile, then a bit of a low through miles 12-13. Then a huge high once we got into the heart of DC. Seeing all the monuments and history definitely helped masked the pain and fatigue. After seeing the Washington we entered the National Mall which lead straight to The Capitol.  Now the National Mall is long, really really long. It’s slightly over a mile long, one way. And we had done 16 already. But the high continued. Seeing all the cool museums like the Smithsonian, National Gallery of Art, and the National Museum of Natural History continued to help mask the fatigue. All while the Capitol kept getting bigger and bigger. And then there she was. Running on 1st St she was right there. Bigger and cooler than I ever expected. America happens there. And I’m running right by it. Thus began another mile run on the opposite side of the mall with views of the Air and Space Museum, Smithsonian Castle, and the historic carousel. I met up with the family around mile 18 for more fuel. I knew I was starting to ware down so arranged one more meeting point down the line, which will end up being a great idea.
Finally leaving the National Mall section, we passed the National Holocaust Museum on our way back to Virginia. We hopped onto I395, another highway they had shut down for the race, and continued on crossing over the Potomac one last time. And then the adrenaline and the high from the past 5 miles went bye bye. Hitting mile 19 was hard, no monuments, very little crowd support, the gut check started to kick in. I got pass mile 20 and we entered into the Pentagon south parking lot. 10 kilometers to go and I was cramping. It was crazy to think this day had started on the other side of this ginormous building a few hours earlier.
Miles 21.5-23.5 went through Crystal City, which was a huge pick me up. The crowds got huge again, and their energy got me pumped up again. Plus the extra meeting with the family gave me enough to know I could finish the race. After the long down and back of Crystal City, we wound through the city before hopping on to Jefferson Davis Highway and running by the Pentagon again on the east side and coming out near where the Runner’s Village was from that morning. A little over a mile to go.
For the end of October and early November, Washington DC was unseasonably warm. Race day that morning it started out cool, but some 4 hours later the temperature had risen pretty well. And after running 25 miles, you’ll doing all you can to stay focused and trying to keep yourself from passing out. We hopped back onto the same highway we started on, and just in that stretch I saw 3 runner’s down with medical personnel trying to help them. I felt bad for them knowing we had a mile to go and their race was most likely over. That’s the hard part about marathoning, any plan and training you have can go out the window just like that. We all take that risk.
I kept trekking along. About a half mile to go the crowds started to grow. You start doing the self-motivation talking. “C’mon Jake, keep pushing”. “You’re almost there, gut it out”. They say the first half of a race is ran with your legs, the second half is ran with your heart. At the point of the race, those that really want it finish the race. The cemetery was back on my left again. We ran under the bridge where the start line was. I recognized the port-o-potty I used before the race. Such a surreal moment at this point of the race, usually don’t remember a whole bunch of it. I heard a man yell, “A quarter mile and two more turns and you’re done!” Just one lap around a standard track, and that’s it left. I saw turn one, and a steep hill straight up. What a cruel trick to play on us after running 26 miles! Then turn two. There it was, the finish line. With one last burst I heard the emcee yell over the speaker, “Jake Bostwick from Edmond, Oklahoma!”
And that’s all she wrote.
Sunday October 30, 2016. 4.08:19 after the start
On February 19, 1945, 70000 marines invaded the island of Iwo Jima. After 36 days of fighting, nearly 7000 marines were killed. On February 23, 1945, five days after the invasions begin, Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal took a picture of six men, Cpl. Harlon Block, Navy Pharmacist’s Mate John Bradley, Cpl. Rene Gagnon, PFC Franklin Sousley, Sgt. Michael Strank, and Cpl. Ira Hayes. These six men planted the American flag on top of Mt. Suribachi, in return giving the world one of the most iconic pictures ever taken. On November 10, 1954, a statue sculpted by Felix W. de Weldon from the picture was dedicated by President Dwight D Eisenhower on the 179th anniversary of the US Marine Corps. Thus the Marine Corp Memorial was made. It is the largest bronze statue in the world, standing at close to 78 feet. The figures are 32 feet high and the canteen is said to be able to hold 32 quarts of water. There is flag at the top of the pole that flies at full mast 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This was our finish line.
The steep hill one turn away from the finish line was a representation of our fight to climb the mountain, to climb our own Mt Suribachi to reach the finish line. I thought it was a very cool similarity of the battle they fought over 70 years ago and our battle we fought today.
It wasn’t my fastest or slowest marathon, but it was definitely the most memorable. Just as the marines had been manning all the aid stations, there were still more of them handing out medals. I retrieved mine, got my picture in front of the memorial, and thus proceeded to hobble along to find the family.
Marathon number 7 was in the books.
