I was trying to explain the plot of a story I'm writing to my best friend's mom today and she was telling me how it sounds similar to the Lauren Bancroft movie she recently watched and she went on for quite a while before my best friend walked in and said, "Mom, are you talking about Tomb Raider?"
I'm fucking crying

New Series - Altered Carbon
youtube
Newly airing in Netflix now is a interesting new sci-fi series, Altered Carbon. Over 300 years in the future humans can store their consciousness in a “stack” disc that is placed in the spine under the skull, allowing humans to change bodies, known as “sleeves” and essentially live forever as long as their stack isn’t destroyed. Joel Kinnaman stars as Tekashi Kovacs a rebel mercenary who is re awoken 250 years into his prison sentence in a new sleeve and hired to solve the murder of one of the wealthiest men in the world.
250 years prior there was an uprising against this new world order and Tekashi was the sole survivor of the rebel army. Arrested and his stack resting for over two centuries in prison, he is put into a new sleeve and intercepted by police officer Kristin Ortega (Martha Higareda) on his way to his new employer who got him released. Laurens Bancroft (James Purefoy), is one of the wealthiest men in the world, who was recently murdered. His stack is replaced into a cloned version of his body, which only the most wealthy commonly known as “meths” can afford. Not able to remember the moments before his death he offers money and a pardon to Tekashi to solve his murder after Ortega and the police failed. Ortega now being punished for not finding a murderer is tracking Tekashi and keeping an eye on the former rebel as he goes to the seediest parts of the city to investigate. He experiences some illusions and flashbacks of his past his loved ones (Dichen Lachman and Renée Elise Goldsberry) that he can’t ever see again because their stacks were destroyed while he discovers the new world around him.
So far the series is a interesting new sci fi full of nudity, and violence. Showcasing how with this technology and replacing bodies, our bodies become disposable and the lack of protectiveness we will feel over our own body. It has an intriguing look at the future combined with a murder mystery with a bit of Blade Runner influence. It will be interesting to see how future seasons follow the book series it’s based off of or not, and the evolving cast as bodies are disposed of. Recommend for sci fi and more graphic murder mystery fans.
