Propaganda
Aristides Mavros (Lisbon) - He does it all for the money, babes. He can't help it if he's hot, too.
Nutsy (Moontide) - When he said "I haven't slept since 1936", I felt that in my very SOUL. He's such a sweet little scrungle and he looks a lot like Teddy Roosevelt! He's just kinda there tm for the whole movie, just shuffling around and looking out for his buddies. He reminds me of a magpie for some reason (especially with the whole dress scene!). Anyways, vote for my king Nutsy!
This is round one for The King of The Claudes tournament and other matchups can be found here!

Hi! Quick question - when submitting propaganda, are we only submitting things from the movies in which are scrunglies are…y’know, scrungly? Like take Claude Rains for example, is he only restricted to gifs of him looking like a homeless dude in Moontide(1942) or can we submit like polished headshots or whatnot? Just thought I’d ask beforehand! I’m so stoked for this poll!!
The polls are about scrungliness, not hotness, so please submit propaganda that you feel conveys scrungliness. Generic hot photos won't be boosted because this is not a hot tournament.
With that said, please be considerate of how you're framing scrungliness. I'm going to post more about this tomorrow but some propaganda submissions had a troubling habit of conflating difference with scrungliness, and it really bothers me. Like in this ask—be careful about how you're throwing the word "homeless" in like it's shorthand for weird, ok? Being homeless is just...being homeless. It doesn't make you weird or strange and it shouldn't be used that way. The casual tone some of the submitted propaganda had toward class/race/disability has really bothered me and I'll post a longer discussion of this before the tournament starts.
#asks#not yelling @ you anon but some of the propaganda i reviewed really crossed some lines for me.#scrungliness is a performance. a performance that's comic or strange or funny in an intentional way. it's not just...existing as a person#i have a lot more thoughts about this but i want to give this the full space it needs in a real post#anyway tl;dr please be considerate.

IDA LUPINO
Ida Lupino (4 February 1918 – 3 August 1995) was a British actress, director, writer, and producer. Throughout her 48-year career, she appeared in 59 films and directed eight, working primarily in the United States, where she became a citizen in 1948. She is widely regarded as the most prominent female filmmaker working in the 1950s during the Hollywood studio system. With her independent production company, she co-wrote and co-produced several social-message films and became the first woman to direct a film noir, The Hitch-Hiker, in 1953.
Among Lupino's other directed films, the best known are Not Wanted (1949), about unwed pregnancy (she took over for a sick director and refused directorial credit); Never Fear (1950), loosely based upon her own experiences battling paralyzing polio; Outrage (1950), one of the first films about rape; The Bigamist (1953), and The Trouble with Angels (1966). Her short yet immensely influential directorial career, tackling themes of women trapped by social conventions, usually under melodramatic or noir coverings, is a pioneering example of proto-feminist filmmaking.
As an actress, Lupino's best known films are The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1939) with Basil Rathbone; They Drive by Night (1940) with George Raft and Humphrey Bogart; High Sierra (1941) with Bogart; The Sea Wolf (1941) with Edward G. Robinson and John Garfield; Ladies in Retirement (1941) with Louis Hayward; Moontide (1942) with Jean Gabin; The Hard Way (1943); Deep Valley (1947) with Dane Clark; Road House (1948) with Cornel Wilde and Richard Widmark; While the City Sleeps (1956) with Dana Andrews and Vincent Price; and Junior Bonner (1972) with Steve McQueen.

Moontide (1942)
A simple story told in a way that really feels like you are in some kind of a dream. The movie does effortlessly what The Trial \ Le procès (1962) tries so hard and bluntly to do (it succeeds to). Giving you the unease of a nightmare and blissfulness of a happy dream. It’s interesting how going from scene to scene something seemingly random happens while keeping you feeling that it’s actually must be connected and highly significant.

1942 and 1945! 💖
uh oh 1942 has a large amount of my most favorite films, what if I accidentally break my limit of 5 per year for this one. -The Talk of the Town (my blog's namesake!) -Now, Voyager -You Were Never Lovelier -The Palm Beach Story -My Sister Eileen -To Be or Not to Be -Cairo -Lady in a Jam -Moontide -I Married an Angel
1945 was previously asked but this gives me a chance to add some more favorites to it without guilt! -Mildred Pierce -Over 21 -Pillow to Post -Anchors Aweigh -The Wicked Lady
#ask game#thanks so much elizabeth!#i doubled the limit I set for myself with 1942 and there are still more i could add#favorite movie a year asks

Jean Gabin- holy fuck this guy fucking rules
I am not an "old movie" person by any means. I have never tried to write a review or summary of a movie, period. I just feel very moved by these movies. Gabin's face. Dude. DUUUUDE. I feel like I was fucking robbed. 34 years I've gone without ever seeing these, and even the worst of them (moontide) was worth my time.
Thank you to my best friend, who has slowly over the last few years been showing me dozens of older films. Including all of these in just 3 or4 IRL sessions. @itslucyhenley TYVM for being the best human I know.
Gabin has a face I could watch forever. He is so fucking cool. Like, I used to think Bogart was the coolest, baddest old movie dude around.
Gabin gives him a serious run. I am stunned.
Grand Illusion 1937- This one really blew me away. The strong anti war commentary. The subtle gay love story. the humor and horror. Stunning.
Pepe Le Moko 1937- fucking tragic. but funny. Loved it. Also apparently responsible for pepe le pew existing.
La Bete Humaine 1938- This felt so modern. Like the prototype of noir, but also a formula for future serial killer stories. It was fucked up, but the camera work and bleak transitions form daylight to all dark and brooding shadows really worked so well. The train itself felt like a fully developed character.
Port of Shadows 1938- Are these French people okay? Also I feel like bands like The Smiths and My Chemical Romance would not have existed without this movie lol. LOVED IT.
Le Jour Se Leve (Daybreak) 1939- Jesus. These French folks are not okay at all. Bleak. Gorgeous. Fucked up.
Moontide 1942- MEH. Weird movie, but Gabin was so cool in it. The only movie of his I have seen that feels like a a straight up romance/drama with a lot of comedy mixed in.
Touchez pas au grisbi 1954- cool as fuck heist-adjacent movie. God I loved this. Gabin at his absolute coolest for me.
French Cancan 1955- loved this night club comedy/drama. The color was so gorgeous and the art within the movie on the walls etc. felt like an extension of the characters themselves. I laughed, I cried, I got up and legit danced. Absolute BLAST of a flick.
