One of my newest coping mechanisms whenever I'm stressed is taking songs stuck in my head and making them about my cat.

The 90s Moomins beginning and ending credits themes have been earworms of mine for weeks so now my cat has two new theme songs I've written for her in my phone's notepad:

Heres a sneak peak. Can't wait to serenade/annoy her with these when I get home. 😭

Btw "chumbing" = the act of being chumby. We use this term in our home on a daily basis as she is a chumby gorl.

And here is my second animation in Procreate Dreams! This time it’s a little Moomin scene.

This started off simply as a test to see if Dreams could do multi-plane camera effects, but it quickly got out of hand and took me WAY longer than I thought it would.

The problem was that in order to have the closeup shot look decent, i had to have an extremely large canvas and had to paint the background with much more detail than I normally would. In addition, it still needed to be able to fit the much smaller resolution insert of the window opening. I’ve never had to paint a scene in 4K resolution before and that presented a lot of challenges for my poor outdated iPad. Getting the right amount of detail and aligning the two layers was much more trouble than I anticipated and resulted in a lot of trial and error.

Getting each layer of the scene to move at the correct speed to make the parallax effect work also took a lot of work. And of course animating Moomin opening the window and Snufkin playing the harmonica added to the time needed to complete the scene. Honestly I didn’t think this simple scene would take me close to a month to complete.

For those curious, using the groups feature in Procreate Dreams was a lifesaver. Once I animated Moomin opening the window I was able to just group it together with the house layer and then scale both at the same time. The same went for Snufkin on the bridge. Being able to link those layers together into one layer made adjusting the parallax scrolling much easier to deal with. I really love how much groups help tidy up your timeline.

The Moomins (More specifically MoominValley the 90's dub) has become one of my favourite comfort series ever.

My absolute favourite episodes are An Invisable friend and The invisable child, i adore Ninny and her little bell, to think in this world when a child is made to feel like a burden and when they learn from adults to dislike themselves they turn invisible

and when they are nurtured and loved and love themselves theyre visable again, it's an incredible metaphor for how children in those environments must feel, its honestly such a hopeful two episodes that i almost cried when Moominmama was making Ninny a brand new dress oooh its so sweet 🥹

I. Cannot remember. If I had read a Moomin fic and can’t find it. Or I had completely made it up as a fic I never wrote. The plot was that the 90’s Moomins characters went to a lake, swam in it, and then came out over to the 2019 Moominvalley and they’re all trying to find a way home. Like??? I had fic ideas of the two versions interacting but that was like 2 years or more ago so i can’t remember if this particular one is real or just something from my mind.

Alright but when are we gonna talk about how the 90’s moomins disrespected the mymble’s daughter SO much AND I AM NOT OKAY WITH IT like

They remade my weirdass little gremlin into a preppy nice girl. LISTEN, (especially you who haven’t read the books) she may seem responsible and I can admit that she is but only when she’s taking care of little My and that’s only because she doesn’t want to get scolded by her mom I promise. THIS GIRL LIES TO EVERYONE WITHOUT SHAME AND IT’S LITTERALLY THE FIRST THING SHE DOES WHEN SHE’S FIRST INTRODUCED. UNDERNEATH THAT THIN LAYER OF MATURITY SHE IS EXACTLY LIKE LITTLE MY. IF NOT MORE UNHINGHED

And yes you could say ”she was a child back then of course she wasn’t mature” and I can agree BUT THAT DOESN’T CHANGE ANYTHING. Because in my opinion she’s just as unhinghed when we meet her again

In the anime she’s soft spoken and caring with a big heart which is sweet but if book Mymble jr found me with a broken leg I can guarantee that she would give me a few hits on the back and tell me to walk it off (Bc that’s most definitely what she had to do when she was younger) she is very much oldest sibling burnout

She talks shit about everyone with everyone and doesn’t even care she’s a little shit who would gladly shove little My into a box if she wasn’t getting paid for babysitting her.

In moominvalley in november she comes back to the moominhouse to take care of little My again and when she finds out that she’s traveled away with the moominfamily she’s just like ”Oh well” AND GOES DIRECTLY FOR THEIR LIQUOR CABINET

So in conclusion what I’m saying is that anime Mymble jr would drink tea on a calm sunday morning while book Mymble jr would unapologetically chug a whole bottle of perfume on a tuesday night

Re: moomin fandom

I don't want to get all old man yells at cloud in here but I agree wholeheartedly. Finding community in something you enjoy is great and all but there's something about fandoms in particular that puts me off, particularly the flattening of characters into simple tropes and the misinterpretation issue you mentioned. (<- those two go pretty much hand in hand anyway)

This is an INCREDIBLY first world problem and I often just keep my thoughts to myself because it does not matter one bit but 🤝 you are not alone.

Oh phew, good thing I'm not that out of touch! Yeah there's something about fandom that does that. Perhaps fandom jokes that start out small eventually spiral in the fandom echo chamber into large exaggerations, which slowly go and replace whatever happens in the source material? Err, maybe. That's how I feel it happens in some fandoms. Perhaps I'm only nostalgic because there really were no Moomin fanworks back in the day (besides heavily satirical ones, Moomin YTP I love you), so there could be no major misunderstandings, and if there had been more in the past then they would've contained just as many as there now are ^^'

Fortunately there is a solution, which is not interacting with the fandom at all! It usually works for me very nicely, people in fandom can enjoy their interpretations and I can enjoy the source material and the fanworks I wish to consume UU

Rewatching episode 20 of the 90's Moomin series ("Moomin Saves the Tigers") and now im wondering if calling a Moomin a "hippo" is the worst slur in their universe. 😭
