Adelaide 36ers condemn online racial abuse of NBA recruit Montrezl Harrell
Former NBA star Montrezl Harrell, who now plays basketball for the Adelaide 36ers, has been racially abused online. The Adelaide 36ers basketball team has condemned the racist comments, which happened after Thursday night’s 10-point win over South East Melbourne Phoenix. In a statement posted to Instagram, the 36ers said racist comments were directed at one of their players on social media after the game. “In moments like this, the 36ers and the NBL stand together to educate people about the harmful impacts of racism and online abuse,” the statement read. Harrell shared the racial slurs, which were from an anonymous account, to his social media. The slurs also included references to his death. The club called out the incident 16 hours after Harrell’s post. The 36ers said the incident had been reported to the Basketball Australia integrity unit. A club spokesperson did not believe the incident had been referred to South Australian Police. Harrell was an NBA Sixth Man of the Year. (Supplied: ESPN) Harrell had a strong match against the Phoenix, scoring 14 points. A spokesperson for the Phoenix said “while it appears to not be a Phoenix member, we want to make it clear we do not condone this”. Basketball Australia has been contacted for comment. Harrell brought in as a replacement The 36ers announced Harrell would be joining them last month to replace injured player Jarell Martin. At the time, 36ers head coach Mike Wells said Harrell would “bring energy at both ends of the floor” while “adding toughness”. “Montrezl will bring that professionalism with a lot of years in the NBA and his competitiveness is great and he will bring that to the organisation,” Wells said. Harrell has played more than 500 games in the NBA for the Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Clippers, Los Angeles Lakers, Washington Wizards, Charlotte Hornets and Philadelphia 76ers. Wells also has extensive NBA experience, coaching several team in the US since 1995. Head coach sacked The racial incident comes at a tense time for the 36ers after the sacking of head coach Scott Ninnis in August, just six months after he was appointed to the role. After being contacted about the racial incident, the club released a separate statement regarding Ninnis. Former head coach Scott Ninnis was dismissed a quarter of the way through his contract. (ABC News: Dean Faulkner) It said the club had met with Ninnis last week to discuss matters relating to his departure. “Both parties are pleased to announce that all issues have now been resolved and Ninnis is supportive of the club moving forward,” the statement read. Grant Kelley, Adelaide 36ers executive chairman, said it was important for both parties to move forward and look towards the future. “Scott is a club legend and we are glad to have his support,” he said. “As a club, we have a full focus on what is ahead for us and are excited for the NBL25 season.” The club statement said Ninnis said he was “thankful to put the past behind him” and was looking forward to supporting the club. “I am happy that we have been able to sort things out,” Ninnis said. “I wish Grant and the club all the best for the season ahead and I’m looking forward to attending games this season.” Scott Ninnis was replaced by Mike Wells, who was originally appointed as an assistant coach earlier this year. Odds Nba Games Today
Just as he did last night in Houston and as he has done for mostly every game this season, LeBron James paced the Los Angeles Lakers in the first half on their way to their fourth straight victory overall and their seventh straight victory on the road, as they’ve begun the season 7-0 away from Staples Center. James had 26 points, including five made 3-pointers to tie his season-high, with 15 of his points coming in the first half. Thanks to that start, the Lakers demolished the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday, 128-99.

The 2020-21 NBA regular season started on Tuesday Dec. 22 and this year's campaign will be a 72-game schedule, opposed to 82 games. The NBA Playoffs will likely begin in April and the NBA Finals are expected to be decided in June.
Although the Lakers let the Thunder close after building a 24-point lead at halftime, the Lakers reasserted their dominance in the third quarter. After Shai Gilgeous-Alexander got off to a nice start with 10 points in the first half, SGA was held to just two points the rest of the way. With the Lakers starting 7-0 it’s the best road start in franchise history.
Lakers bench continues to provide LeBron a luxury
Alonzo Adams-USA TODAY Sports
One of the biggest storylines for the Lakers so far this season has been their ability to hold and sometimes extend leads with LeBron James on the bench. While they had a better bench last season, they still looked lost at times without James and Anthony Davis, but this season has provided a great luxury to the now 36-year old.
While Wednesday was the second night of a back-to-back, James was able to watch the final 6 minutes from the bench on both nights. While many folks have been concerned about LeBron’s minutes, the bench has allowed a luxury like this a few more nights than the Lakers were used to last season. A big reason why has been the consistent presence of Montrezl Harrell, who finished with 21 points and six rebounds.
Surviving injuries and still leading the NBA
Alonzo Adams-USA TODAY Sports
How do the Los Angeles Lakers manage to deal with the injuries they’ve had to key players throughout the start of the season, including a couple of missed games by Anthony Davis and more recently Wesley Matthews, the Lakers depth and team chemistry appears to be guiding them through a difficult, pandemic-affected season.
Vegas Odds Nba Games Today
Harrell’s energy has been just as important as his production and Dennis Schroder’s ability to run the team and his competitive nature appear to have also created a spark, while Marc Gasol has also sparked some new creativity from LeBron. After Wednesday’s win, the Lakers are the first team in the league to reach 10 wins.

Sources: Dallas Mavericks trading Kristaps Porzingis to Washington Wizards for Spencer Dinwiddie, Davis Bertans
The Dallas Mavericks have agreed to tradpower forward Kristaps Porzingis and a second-round pick to the Washington Wizards for guard Spencer Dinwiddie and forward Davis Bertans, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski and Tim MacMahon on Thursday.
The Wizards also are sending Montrezl Harrell to the Charlotte Hornets for Vernon Carey Jr. and Ish Smith, sources told Wojnarowski. Washington traded guard Aaron Holiday to the Phoenix Suns as well, a source told ESPN, confirming an Athletic report.
The Porzingis trade represents a major shift for the Mavericks. They had acquired Porzingis from the New York Knicks in a blockbuster deal in 2019 with the hopes that he เ>would be a long-term co-star alongside Luka Doncic.

Porzingis, who has missed the past five games thanks to a bone bruise in his right knee, has two seasons remaining on his five-year, $158 million contract.
In another deal for Dallas on Thursday, the Mavericks and Dorian Finney-Smith agreed to a four-year, $55 million contract extension, sources told ESPN.
Dinwiddie, 28, provides the Mavericks a scoring and playmaking boost. He signed a three-year, $54 million contract with the Wizards last offseason and has career averages of 12.9 points and 5.1 assists.
Having Dinwiddie also gives theMavericks insurance in case guard Jalen Brunson leaves Dallas as an unrestricted free agent this summer, although sources told ESPN that the team remains optimistic that it will re-sign the 25-year-old.
Finney-Smith, 28, is averaging a career-high 10.1 points per game along with 4.8 rebounds and 2.0 assists.
The 6-foot-10 Bertans is a 40% career 3-point shooter who fell out of favor in Washington after signing a five-year, $80 million deal in the 2020 offseason. He has averaged 5.7 points in 34 games this season.
Harrell is in the final year of his contract, and the Hornets will inherit his early Bird rights this offseason. Hornets general manager Mitch Kupchak has been looking to add a center who can score and defend for quite some time. Harrell is 6-foot-7 but has a 7-foot-4wingspan and is expected to play both power forward and center.
A former Sixth Man of the Year, Harrell was part of a logjam of Wizards big men with Thomas Bryant and Daniel Gafford all competing for minutes when healthy.
Smith has been Charlotte's third-string point guard since joining the team during the offseason, playing behind LaMelo Ball and Terry Rozier. He has played in 37 games and averaged 4.5 points and 2.7 assists. He returns to the Wizards, where he spent the previous two seasons, averaging 9.2 points and 4.5 assists.
Carey, a former second-round pick, has played in 23 games during his career and is averaging 2.3 points per game.
Holiday averaged 6.1 points for the Wizards and gives Phoenix more depth in the backcourt.
For the Wizards, the trades come on the same day that star guard Bradley Beal underwent season-ending surgery on his left wrist.
Sources told Wojnarowski this week that Beal's agent, Mark Bartelstein of Priority Sports, met with owner Ted Leonsis and general manager Tommy Sheppard to discuss the three-time All-Star's future and the franchise's plans for constructing a roster.

Cade Cunningham can fix the Pistons, plus big-market MLB teams make big moves ahead of trade deadline
Getty Images Hello everyone, guess who? If you guessed it's Shanna McCarriston, congrats! There was no shortage of sports action yesterday. I mean, what a crazy Thursday it was. At night we had the NBA Draft, which took so many more hours to complete than it should have. But before that, a giant name in the sport, Russell Westbrook was traded. And that's not even beginning to scratch the surface of trades that happened in the sports world, as multiple MLB All-Stars were moved earlier on Thursday. Please check the opt-in box to acknowledge that you would like to subscribe. Thanks for signing up! Keep an eye on your inbox. Sorry! There was an error processing your subscription. Oh, and *checks notes* we are in the midst of the Summer Olympics, in case you forgot.I won't leave you hanging, don't worry. Let's get started on catching up on everything.📰 What you need to know1. Recapping the NBA Draft: Cade Cunningham, as expected, goes to Detroit 🏀We have so much stuff to go over today, but let's start with the most recent happening: the NBA Draft took place last night. As expected (after weeks of smokescreens!), Cade Cunningham was selected by the Detroit Pistons with the No. 1 overall pick. According to our basketball experts, Cunningham was the best prospect in the draft and should've gone first no matter which team had the top pick. - CBS Sports' Gary Parrish: "If the Pistons spend the coming years building back to a place of relevance, this decision they made tonight will be the biggest reason why." - No. 1: Cunningham, Pistons, A+ - No. 2: Jalen Green, Rockets, A+ - No. 3: Evan Mobley, Cavaliers, A+ - No. 4: Scottie Barnes, Raptors, A- - No. 5: Jalen Suggs, Magic, A+ - No. 6: Josh Giddey, Thunder, B+ - No. 7: Jonathan Kuminga, Warriors, A+ - No. 8: Franz Wagner, Magic, B- - No. 9: Davion Mitchell, Kings, A+ - No. 10: Ziaire Williams, Pelicans, A-The first five picks were rather predictable, but it's the rest of the top 10 that becomes a bit more questionable. Parrish noted that the reason Giddey's pick got a lower score was because OKC should've picked Kuminga instead. When it comes to the other non-A grade, Wagner is young and has a lot of room to develop, but Parrish was surprised that he was top-10 pick material.2. Russell Westbrook gets sent to the Lakers 🏀Russell Westbrook is going back to Cali. The Wizards traded the UCLA product to the Lakers, along with second-round picks in 2024 and 2028, in return for Kyle Kuzma, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Montrezl Harrell and the No. 22 overall pick.Let's take a look at the breakdown of this trade:- Wizards trade Russell Westbrook to the Lakers, along with second-round picks in 2024 and 2028 - Westbrook set to make over $44 million next season - Wizards receive Kyle Kuzma, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Montrezl Harrell and the No. 22 overall pick - Harrell is opting into the final year of his contract at $9.7 million, which the Lakers needed for salary purposes - Kuzma, Caldwell-Pope and Harrell combine to make nearly $36 million The Wizards plan to keep their other star, Bradley Beal, according to ESPN, even though he will be a free agent next offseason. While it may seem like Westbrook isn't the perfect fit for Lakers, who are ranked 24th in 3-point attempts and 21st in 3-point percentage last season and may not want someone who is known for struggling from three, he does fit as the secondary playmaker they've been looking for. This will take some pressure off LeBron James and help the Lakers, as he is a dynamic scorer. This is Westbrook's fourth team in four seasons. While Westbrook has an impressive resume, he does not have an NBA championship. This might be his best shot yet.3. Four All-Stars moved as wild MLB trade deadline approaches ⚾ Getty Images Remember when I said at the top that yesterday was a busy sports day? Well, MLB kind of led the way with the craziness. The Dodgers acted like the Dodgers and, after it was reported in the afternoon that the Padres were closing in on a deal to get Max Scherzer, Los Angeles turned around and acquired Scherzer AND shortstop Trea Turner from the Nats. The Padres were oh so close to a deal for Scherzer, but it never got done and the Dodgers swooped in and stole him. That's the wild wild NL West for you. Here's a look at the details of this trade:- Dodgers get ace Max Scherzer and All-Star Trea Turner - Nationals gets catcher Keibert Ruiz, pitcher Josiah Gray, outfielder Donovan Casey and pitcher Gerardo Carrillo - Scherzer is owed the balance of a $34.5 million salary for this season - Scherzer is eligible for free agency this winter - Turner will remain under team control through the 2022 seasonThis season, Scherzer has pitched to a 2.76 ERA with 147 strikeouts and 28 walks in 111 innings. Turner has hit .322/.369/.521 (146 OPS+) with 18 home runs and 21 steals (on 24 tries). Not a bad haul for the Dodgers, who are an impressive 62-42 but very well may not win their division because of how great the first-place Giants and third-place Padres are. While that was one of the biggest deadline blockbusters in years, it was not the only involving All-Stars that went down. Both Anthony Rizzo and Kyle Schwarber are now in the AL East and on different sides of the sport's more storied rivalry. The New York Yankees and Chicago Cubs agreed on a trade that put first baseman Rizzo in pinstripes, while the Red Sox took advantage of the Nationals selling off most of their roster and acquired Schwarber.Oh, and the trade deadline isn't even until 4 p.m. this afternoon, so get the popcorn, because more big trades are likely to happen. 4. Olympics schedule: What's happening on Friday🏅 Getty Images The Olympics are far from over and the events seem to keep getting more exciting as the days go along. We've seen Caeleb Dressel and Suni Lee take gold this week and we have lots of events to watch today as well. Here's a look at watch to watch on Friday, highlighted by the final chapter of Katie Ledecky vs. Australia's Ariarne Titmus in the women's 800m freestyle:- Women's soccer quarterfinals: USA vs. Netherlands | Live updates as the action is underway right now - Men's golf third round, 6:30 p.m. - Swimming finals, starting at 9:30 p.m.: Men's 100m butterfly, women's 200m backstroke, women's 800m freestyle, mixed 100m medley📝 Odds & Ends Getty Images 📺 What to watch tonight🏅 2020 Tokyo Olympics | TV: fuboTV, NBC⚾ Red Sox vs. Rays, 7:10 p.m. | TB -135 | TV: MLB.TV⚾ Yankees vs. Marlins, 7:10 p.m. | MIA +135 | TV: MLB.TV🏅 Best thing I saw on the internetI love an adorable family moment and the Olympics are filled with lots of them. Just like with Caeleb Dressel's family, Suni Lee's family had an amazing reaction when she won gold in the individual all-around. I mean, who doesn't love an emotional, happy reaction from years of their family member's hard work accumulated to an Olympic medal?! Simone Biles, who has outwardly shown immense support for her teammates, also had a fantastic reaction to her friend taking gold. Read the full article
