Trains, Chocolate, a lake and mountains - Switzerland in 1 Day

Leaving Geneva I decided to move to another part of the lake, to a hostel near Montreux at Territet.

As the hostel reception was closed until later I put my bags in a locker and headed for the Cailler chocolate factory at Broc Fabrique, up in the alps.

Earlier on my way to Territet I changed trains in Montreux.

There I caught sight of the Train du Chocolat, or Chocolate Train.

Could such a thing really exist!

The train is on the Golden Pass route, taking tourists mostly, to the famous cheese town of Gruyere and connecting on to Broc Fabroque where Cailler chocolate has a factory.

Taking a train from Montreux I sit in the dining car

and orer a glass of local wine. It comes in a bottle with a cap and costs 9 francs.

You could probably buy it in a supermarket for a franc.

Regardless, I’m going to enjoy the views of Lake Geneva as the train makes turns to gain height as we ascend into the mountains that run alongside the lake.

At one time you can see lake from the left hand side then the train turns and it’s out of the right hand side.

At the end of the pretty empty carriage an old Swiss French man who’s travelling on his own tries to strike up a conversation with a young Swiss German couple.

He asks them if they can speak French.

The lady says that she can speak some.

The conversation breaks down as she can’t keep up with him.

Finally he asks them where they’re from.

‘Die Schweitz’ she answers.

He can’t hear her.

’Schweitz’ she says again, rudely.

From the same country but they can’t understand each other.

He leaves their table and comes down and asks if he can sit with me. We chat away in French.

He’s a widower in his 80’s and is just looking for someone to chat to. He tells me about some of the buildings that we see on distant mountain tops.

Then the lake is gone from view and snow covered trees are all in view.

We’re on the side of a mountain with a deep valley is on our right. Before long we pull into Montbovon

here I change to a smaller train and on to Bulle where I catch a third train to Broc Fabrique.

The chocolate factory tour costs just 10 francs but the place is choc a bloc with families and groups as it’s school holiday time.

At the end of the tour they have all their chocolate presented on plates and you can help yourself to as much as you want.

I take some samples away with me.

I take a couple of more trains to get me back to Territet, descending to the lake after a perfect Swiss day.

01-02 août 2021 : week-end au canton de Fribourg

Nous avons décidé de passer un week-end dans le canton de Fribourg, à la découverte des beaux paysages et des belles villes de la région, avec au premier plan Gruyères, superbe cité médiévale, et connue dans le monde entier pour son fromage, il n’y a pas que les trains dans la vie !

Au pied du rocher sur lequel se situe le village passe la ligne Palézieux-Bulle-Montbovon. Y circulent des rames Stadler ABe 2/4+B+Be 2/4 (ou ABe 100) des transports publics fribourgeois (TPF). Je n’en ai pas vu à cet endroit, mais j’ai pu apercevoir une courte rame de l’infra avec le Tmf 2/2 17, un des deux locotracteurs de la compagnie.

Suite des photos à Bulle, un des points névralgiques du RER fribourgeois, dont la particularité est de compter des lignes à voie normale et d’autres à voie métrique. Voici le détail des lignes (nom/ligne/écartement/compagnie/matériel/cadencement) :

RE : Bulle - Fribourg (- Berne), standard, TPF, Flirt, 30 minutes

S20 : Fribourg - Ins - Neuchâtel, standard, TPF, Flirt, 60 minutes

S21 : Fribourg - Ins, standard, TPF, Flirt, 60 minutes (semaine uniquement)

S30 : Fribourg -Yverdon-les-Bains, standard, CFF, Domino, 30 minutes

S40 : Fribourg - Romont, standard, CFF, Domino, 30 minutes

S50 : Palézieux - Bulle, métrique, TPF, 30 minutes en semaine, 60 le week-end

S51 : Bulle - Montbovon, métrique, TPF, 60 minutes

S60 : Bulle - Broc-Fabrique, métrique, TPF, 60 minutes

En terme de matériels métriques, outre les rames 100, les TPF disposent également de quatre compositions 120, formées par une automotrice Be 4/4, une voiture intermédiaire B et une voiture-pilote (A)Bt.

Je complète par la vision de deux wagons à Broc-Fabrique, où sont fabriqués les chocolats Cailler, et une vue d’un tramway à Berne, où nous avons fini notre voyage !

 3.Zweisimme

Situated in the Canton of Bern, it is the small railway station where Simran runs to catch the train. Zweisimmen marks the beginning of the rail line that travels to Montrux along Lake Geneva. It is one of the ten villages that constitutes the Gstaad-Saanenland region, and spans a wide valley floor. It offers an amazing ski region, so you can enjoy skiing experience in a frosty weather and long romantic walks when the sun is up.

4.Gastaad

If you are in the zara-sa-jhoom-lun-main-mood, visiting the main walkway of Gastaad would do full justice to your carefree spirits.

Gastaad is a small delightful village in southwestern Switzerland. The place is best known for winter sports and gourmet restaurants, which you can’t miss. 

5. Jungfrauj

The feel of the above mentioned song further extends to Jungfraujoch. Located between two hills in the Bernese Alps, it connects Jungfrau and Mönch, at an elevation of 3,466 metres above sea level.

It is the highest train station and highest point in Europe; so, quite literally, you’ll be on the top of the world! The awe-inspiring view of the icy glaciers and Swiss Alps is an unforgettable sight.

6.Lake Lungern

This picturesque spot is a natural lake in Obwalden. It features in the song ‘Tujhe dekha to yeh jana sanam’, when Raj and Simran find a shoe while fishing on the bank.
