Hi! Yes. Also tagging @angel-starbeam who just sent me a similar ask :)

I would recommend:

KJ Charles's Will Darling Adventures (a trilogy, must be read in order, each one is fairly short, HEA). This is an M/M series with a GREAT eye for detail regarding the setting (post WWI/1920s). Will, a working class (maybe middle class?) veteran recently inherited a bookshop, and he ends up getting drawn into espionage and intrigue while developing a relationship with possible (probable) spy and upper class rich boy Kim. And when I say relationship, I mean they're basically fuckbuddies with trust issues at first, but oh no, LOOOOVE.

Adriana Herrera wrote a great novella called The Bootlegger's Bounty—it's set around the 1920s, I think, and it's an MMF romance about a singer coming into contact with a notorious bootlegger/pirate guy and... a bratty guy.... On a ship. Super hot, great vibe, so good.

If you're down for something VERY old school (as in, written in the 80s) and not always the most PC regarding gender roles, I gotta admit that I really enjoyed The Princess by Jude Deveraux, set during WWII (1940s). The heroine is the princess of a fictional kingdom and, after almost getting murdered and washing up in the Florida Keys, ends up in a fake but also real marriage with a grumbly alpha pilot. Basically... to stop the Nazis...? It's crazy. I was a little "yikes" at points, but again, it is wildly entertaining.

We Could Be So Good by Cat Sebastian is an M/M 1950s romance about a pair of reporters who start out as friends before becoming roommates... and then more. It's very soft and sweet, and does a great job with one of the heroes' bi awakening. She also wrote You Should Be So Lucky, an m/m romance set shortly after in the 60s about a baseball player on a losing streak and a reporter assigned to follow him. I enjoyed this one even moooore.

Beverly Jenkins writes a lot of Reconstruction era/pre-Civil War/western romances. Through the Storm is set during the Civil War, and involves the hero and heroine falling in love, only for her to "betray" him before they're latter forced to marry. Indigo, a favorite of mine, is set during the Underground Railroad era (I forget if the war is HAPPENING or if it's shortly before) and involves a hero involved with the Railroad nursing a conductor rake back to health... after which he decides he MUST have her... Forbidden is a Reconstruction-era western about a heroine who's slowly falling for a rich white man and believing they can't be together, except he's actually a biracial man passing for white and struggling with whether or not he should risk revealing the truth to be with her.

Those are just a few, though, she has a lot!

Joanna Shupe writes Gilded Age romances set in New York—all but a few of her historicals are in that era. Some favorites include her Fifth Avenue Rebels series (a bunch of friends end up in scandalous romances with scandalous men following a crazy Newport house party) and her Uptown Girls trilogy (three sisters whose father is a rich politician end up romancing VERY unsuitable men).

The Widow's Kiss by Jane Feather is set during Henry VIII's reign, during which the heroine is accused of killing her fourth husband and the hero is sent to investigate. Henry VIII actually makes cameos lol.

Never Cross a Highlander by Lisa Rayne is set in the 1600s, I believe. The hero is a Highlander who kidnaps the heroine to "save" her, and she's like "my guy, I already had shit in the works". Both of the leads are Black, and I don't know that I've read any other books featuring Black Highlanders.

Jeannie Lin writes Tang Dynasty era romances, which are GREAT. I'd begin with Butterfly Swords, though the followup, The Dragon and The Pearl, is one of my favorites.

I really enjoy medieval romances. Some I'd recommend are:

Highland Guard, a long series by Monica McCarty set in 1100s (I think?) Scotland. The heroes work for Robert the Bruce, and there are a ton of really adventurous, exciting romances that are perfect for people who love BIG Och Aye.

Lord of Danger by Anne Stuart was one of my favorites of the year, with a heroine forced to marry her brother's evil sorcerer (not really a sorcerer) advisor. Both dark and weirdly funny, like most Anne Stuarts, with a great villain hero.

Master of Desire by Kinley MacGregor is another Scottish one, in which the heroine ends up being the ward of a hero who is DETERMINED not to love her.... AND YET..... This has a great grand gesture/grovel move.

Maya Banks writes really good medieval Scottish books. I haven't read too many yet, but I loved Never Seduce a Scot, which has a heroine and hero marry to solve a clan rivalry. However, she's deaf, which a lot of people don't understand, thinking she's not mentally competent. So he doesn't consummate the marriage.... and she very much wants him to.

Laura Kinsale's For My Lady's Heart and Shadowheart are legendary medievals. The first has a knight end up escorting the ice queen princess he's pledged himself to across the country, only to realize that she's much more complicated than he initially realized. Shadowheart is the spinoff, a dark (and kinky) villain romance with a heroine forced to marry the hero, only to start to fall for him... basically against her own will.

Elizabeth Lowell's medieval trilogy is great, but very 90s. Big alpha heroes, not always aging the best, lots of high stakes and intensity.

Julie Garwood's The Bride a must-read border marriage book—a heroine forced to marry the alpha hero, a big crazy plot, high stakes romance. All that great stuff.

A Kingdom of Dreams by Judith McNaught is FABULOUS, a medieval in which the (apparently unlikable, rebellious) heroine is kidnapped by the hero, during which he realizes he bit off MUCH more than he can chew.

She's reading books! She's learning about the women's movement in other cultures! (Interesting side note: Both Monica and Lucian did their undergraduate degrees in sociology!)

And here's something else she has in common with Lucian:

Apparently she's always thought Petr was a bad influence on Anton, and that Petr's been predatory with women going all the way back to their university days. There are other hints that she doesn't like Petr, but this is the most explicit. It's reminiscent of Lucian's take, who has also known Petr for a long time

In conclusion: Yay for Monica getting to weigh in on things that are happening! And wouldn't it be great if she and Lucian actually had a scene together?

Never Seduce a Scot by Maya Banks has a scene wherein the heroine is bathing a river...? I wanna say? I think it was running water. The hero, who she married in a political alliance, catches her and is super shocked lmao. Which leads to her going "omg please get in here" because she's been DYING for him to break and consummate that thing.

Never Cross a Highlander by Lisa Rayne has a waterfall scene. Which leads to Activities.

The Kingdom of the Wicked trilogy by Kerri Maniscalco has a scene where the hero and heroine are more or less bathing (I mean, they're naked) in this magical natural pool that forces you to be completely honest. I feel like it's called something like The Lake of Naked Honesty or whatever. Although. There is a SIGNIFICANT chance that my friend and I just called it that while shrieking about this series to each other. The spinoff standalone, Throne of the Fallen, revisits this place, because Kerri knows what the people want.

I think The Viper by Monica McCarty has a river bathing scene while the hero and the heroine are trekking across medieval Scotland together. The tension is already off the charts by that point.

A Fire in the Sky by Sophie Jordan out on 9/24 has a scene where the hero has to like... submerge the heroine in a river... for bathing purposes... and and I can't get too into it because spoilers but like... trust and believe it's a SCENE lmao

sometimes i think about what happens next after one of my failed runs

imagine, anton rayne, cleaned up his predecessors' mess with a vaguely centrist economic revival and a more democratic constitution but gave up to rumburg like a coward even though the army situation wasnt even that bad (it was and i lost to them in this run but let's assume i didnt)

obviously everyone is mad as fuck at rayne for losing all that territory. he just went from a pretty good president to the SCREED OF THE EARTH AND A TRAITOR.

rayne knows this all too well and resigns. retreats out of the public eye and moves to some nondescript house at the edge of the city with the wife and kids.

nobody vists him for years. everyone eventually thinks he died or something. good riddance.

then comes a knock at his door. rayne opens it to see none other than lucian galade himself.

anton smiles at him and invites him in. lucian looks a little taken aback at anton's state. anton notices and says, "not what you expected, huh?"

"it just, does not look like a house worthy of a former president, that's all."

"it's an okay house, just like how i was an okay president. and my childhood home was much worse than this."

"right." lucian uncharacteristically is at a loss for words.

"if youre wondering where the rest of the family is, the kids have both grown old and moved out. monica is still working to further the rights of women in the country so she isn't at home most of the time." anton's face doesn't change except for a slight tick in his left hand. "or, more realistically, she couldnt stand to see my face after i sold the country off to rumburg. she has her own house now."

lucian sees that all the family photos he remembers lining the walls in anton's old house (hes only ever been there once but he has a good memory) are gone. theres a few left, of deana with her friends in kyrute, franc with his wife in united contana, cut-outs of photos of monica in the newspapers. university pictures of anton and petr.

"what about you, mr vice president? i see you still havent married."

lucian shakes his head.

"no. and i see you've been keeping up with the news." of course. rayne mustve seen at least the headlines when scouring for mentions of his (ex?) wife in the papers. of course he didnt miss his old advisor lucian galade managing to score himself the vice presidency without him.

"im not mad," anton assures. "its hopeful to see at least someone surviving the dumpster fire of my presidency unscathed."

"i know," lucian says. anton laughs at this. lucian just stays tightlipped like he always is.

lucian keeps returning after this. brings him expensive wine and cigars and sweets. anton jokingly accuses him of corruption and lucian shuts him down. they play chess. anton tells him about work (he teaches economics) and his personal life (can you BELIEVE what my next door neighbour did yesterday??). lucian, meanwhile, doesnt ever talk about his work or his personal life.

one time anton babbles about something one of his students spat in his face once. hes laughing it off but lucian is bothered. he asks why he lets his students speak to him like that and anton tries to wave it off. "im used to it," he says. "and he was right."

the conversation turns to anton's old presidency.

"why did you do it?" lucian asks.

"i was scared. i knew our army was good but not good enough, and we didnt have enough allies to fill in the gaps. we wouldve lost. and to save everyone the trouble i wouldve killed myself." he turns his hand into a shape of a finger gun and places it on his own head. he mimes a pow and his brain getting blown. "maybe i shouldve done it anyway."

lucian tells him to knock it off. anton just giggles (its the alcohol isnt it) and mumbles something about simply following petr's path.

lucian apologizes for bringing it up but anton keeps on going. how nobody would miss him anyway, how everyone was right, how hes a stain on the nation that must be cleansed

lucian slaps him hard enough to startle anton out of his funk and says lucian is going to miss him, so he better not do it.

anton sputters out an apology, looking completely flushed (is it still the alcohol?) and then they kiss
