Threshold
Jackie Kay - on language and communication, story-telling and shared humanity
Let’s blether about doors. Revolving doors and sliding doors;
Half-opened, half-closed: The door with your name on it,
The heavy one - hard to open. The one you walked out when your heart was broken,
The one you walked in as you came to your profession (And the tiny door when you made your confession)
The school door at the end of a lesson, (Yes, Shut the door in Gaelic is duin an doras!)
The wee door on your doll’s House, or Ibsen’s Nora’s door, or Chekhov’s Three Sisters’
Doors imagined by writers the world over - Proust. And the chickens coming home to roost!
Or Chris Guthrie’s open heart at the end of Sunset Song Or the step left when the house is gone, the haw.
The door to the stable, bolted after the horse left, Not Tam O’Shanter’s tail-less horse!
The one that shut suddenly behind you Banged by a violent wind,
The painted red door code for asylum seeker, The X that says Plague or Passover
The one turned into a boat to cross the ever-widening waters. The North seas and the Aegean, reminders
Of the people cleared off their land, out their crofts To whom the sea was their threshold - on, off.
Take the big key and open the door to the living, breathing past The one you enliven over and over,
To the ship’s port, or the house of the welder; To the library door of Donald Dewar.
Then picture yourself on the threshold, The exact moment when you might begin again,
A new sitting, new keys jingle possibilities. Hope comes with a tiny Greyfriar’s Bobby key ring.
Then come through the door to this Parliament, new session! Pass round the revolving door (change in the revolutions,
In 360 degrees) – Take in the mirrored opposites: The Dutch Gables, the cross step Gables…
Here - rising out of the sloping base of Arthur’s Seat Straight into this City, a city that must also speak
For the banks and the braes, munros, cairns, bothies Songs, art, poems, art, stories,
(And don’t forget the ceilidhs – who doesnie love a ceilidh? Heuch!) A city that remembers the fiddlers of Shetland and Orkney
The folk of Colonsay, Bute, and Tiree The Inner and Outer Hebrides, the glens and the Bens
The trees and the rivers and the burns and the lochs and the sea lochs (And Nessie!)
The Granite City and Dumfries and Galloway The Dear green place and Dundee…
Across the stars and the galaxy, The night sky’s tiny keys, the hail clanjamfarie!
Find here what you are looking for: Democracy in its infancy: guard her
Like you would a small daughter And keep the door wide open, not just ajar,
And say, in any language you please, welcome, welcome To the world’s refugees.
Scotland’s changing faces – look at me!! Whose birth mother walked through the door
Of a mother and baby home here And walked out of Elsie Inglis hospital without me.
My Makar, her daughter, Makar Of Ferlie Leed and gallus tongues.
And this is my country says the fisherwoman from Jura. Mine too says the child from Canna and Iona.
Mine too say the Brain family. And mine! says the man from the Polish deli
And mine said the brave and beautiful Asid Shah. Me too said the Black Scots and the red Scots
Said William Wallace and Mary Queen of Scots. Said both the Roberts and Muriel Spark.
Said Emile Sande and Arthur Wharton. Said Ali Smith and Edwin Morgan.
Said Liz Lochhead, Norman and Sorley And mine said the Syrian refugee.
Here we are in this building of pure poetry On this July morning in front of her Majesty.
Good Day Ma’am, Ma’am Good Day. Good morning John and Helen Kay -
Great believers in democracy. And in gieing it laldy.
Our strength is our difference. Dinny fear it. Dinny caw canny.

Yurt là gì
Yurt
Other uses [[File:Syr Darya Oblast. Kyrgyz Yurt WDL10968.png|thumb|A traditional [[Kazakh people|Kazakh]] yurt in 1860 in the [[Syr Darya]] Oblast. Note the lack of a compression ring at the top.]] [[File:Armature dune yourte (Khorezm, Ouzbékistan) (6859416536).jpg|thumb|A Qaraqalpaq bentwood type “yourte” in [[Khwarezm]] (or Karakalpakstan), Uzbekistan]] [[File:Gorskii 04412u.jpg|thumb|[[Turkmens|Turkmen]] woman at the entrance to a yurt in [[Turkestan]]; 1913 picture by [[Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii|Prokudin-Gorskii]] ]] A traditional ”’yurt”’ (from the Turkic languages) or ”’ger”’ (Mongolian) is a portable, round [[tent]] covered with skins or [[felt]] and used as a [[dwelling]] by [[nomad]]s in the [[steppe]]s of [[Central Asia]]. The structure comprises an angled assembly or [[latticework]] of pieces of wood or bamboo for walls, a door frame, ribs (poles, rafters), and a wheel (crown, compression ring) possibly [[steam bending|steam-bent]]. The roof structure is often self-supporting, but large yurts may have interior posts supporting the crown. The top of the wall of self-supporting yurts is prevented from spreading by means of a tension band which opposes the force of the roof ribs. Modern yurts may be permanently built on a wooden platform; they may use modern materials such as steam-bent wooden framing or metal framing, canvas or tarpaulin, Plexiglas dome, wire rope, or [[radiant barrier|radiant insulation]]. ==Etymology and synonyms== [[Image:Kazakhyurt.jpg|thumb|A yurt in [[Shymkent]], [[Kazakhstan]], used as a café]] * Yurt – originally from a [[Turkic languages|Turkic]] word referring to the imprint left in the ground by a moved yurt, and by extension, sometimes a person’s homeland, kinsmen, or feudal [[appanage]]. The term came to be used in reference to the physical tent-like dwellings only in other languages. In [[modern Turkish]] the word “yurt” is used as the synonym of “homeland” or a “dormitory”. In [[Russian language|Russian]] the structure is called “yurta” (юрта), whence the word came into English. * гэр (transliterated: ger, IPA-mn) – in [[Mongolian language|Mongolian]] simply means “home”.url=http://www.safecom.org.au/yurts.htmtitle=ger (dwelling house) – Memidex dictionary/thesaurus * [[wikt:тирмә|тирмә]] (transliterated: tirmä) is the [[Bashkirs|Bashkir]] term for yurt. * иіз үй (transliterated: kıiz úy, kɘjɘz ʉj) – the Kazakh word, and means “felt house”. * боз үй (transliterated: boz üy, bɔz yj) – the Kyrgyz term is meaning “grey house”, because of the color of the felt. * ak öý and gara öý (ɑk œj, ɡɑˈrɑ œj) – In [[Turkmen language|Turkmen]] the term is both literally “white house” and “black house”, depending on its luxury and elegance. * qara u’y or otaw () – in [[Qaraqalpaq language|Qaraqalpaq]] the first term means “black house”, while the second means “a newborn family” and is used only to name a young family’s yurt. * “Kherga”/”[[Jirga]]” – [[Demographics of Afghanistan|Afghans]] call them. * “Kheyma” (خیمه/ख़ॆमा) is the word for a yurt or a tent-like dwelling in [[India]] and [[Pakistan]], from the [[Arabic]]:خیمه * In [[Persian language|Persian]] yurt is called “chador” (چادر), in [[Tajik language|Tajik]] the names are “yurt”, “khona-i siyoh”, “khayma” (юрт, хонаи сиёҳ, хайма). * өг (ög, œɣ) is the [[Tuvan language|Tuvan]] word for yurt. ==History== Yurts have been a distinctive feature of life in Central Asia for at least three thousand years. The first written description of a yurt used as a dwelling was recorded by the [[Ancient Greece|ancient Greek]] historian [[Herodotus]]. He described yurt-like tents as the dwelling place of the [[Scythians]], a horse riding-nomadic nation who lived in the northern Black Sea and Central Asian region from around 600 BC to AD 300.[http://www.woodlandyurts.co.uk/Yurt_Facts/Build_Your_Own.html A complete guide to making a Mongolian Ger], webpage, retrieved October 23, 2011 ==Construction== [[Image:Gurvger.jpg|thumb|A Mongolian Ger]] Traditional yurts consist of an expanding wooden circular frame carrying a felt cover. The [[felt]] is made from the wool of the flocks of sheep that accompany the [[pastoralists]]. The [[timber]] to make the external structure is not to be found on the treeless [[steppes]], and must be obtained by trade in the valleys below. The frame consists of one or more expanding [[Latticework|lattice]] wall-sections, a door-frame, bent roof poles and a crown. The Mongolian Ger has one or more columns to support the crown and straight roof poles. The (self-supporting) wood frame is covered with pieces of felt. Depending on availability, felt is additionally covered with canvas and/or sun-covers. The frame is held together with one or more ropes or ribbons. The structure is kept under compression by the weight of the covers, sometimes supplemented by a heavy weight hung from the center of the roof. They vary with different sizes, and relative weight. They provide a surprisingly large amount of insulation and protection from the outside cold of winters, and they are easily changed to keep the yurts cool for summertime. A yurt is designed to be dismantled and the parts carried compactly on [[camel]]s or [[yak]]s to be rebuilt on another site. Complete construction takes around 2 hours. These patterns are generally not according to taste, but are derived from sacred ornaments with certain symbolism. Symbols representing strength are among the most common, including the khas (swastika) and four powerful beasts (lion, tiger, garuda, and dragon), as well as stylized representations of the five elements (fire, water, earth, metal, and wood), considered to be the fundamental, unchanging elements of the cosmos. Such patterns are commonly used in the home with the belief that they will bring strength and offer protection. Repeating geometric patterns are also widely used. The most widespread geometric pattern is the continuous hammer or walking pattern (alkhan khee). Commonly used as a border decoration, it represents unending strength and constant movement. Another common pattern is the ulzii, a symbol of long life and happiness. The khamar ugalz (nose pattern) and ever ugalz (horn pattern) are derived from the shape of the animal’s nose and horns, and are the oldest traditional patterns. All patterns can be found among not only the yurts themselves, but also on embroidery, furniture, books, clothing, doors, and other objects.last=van der Haegan ===In Central Asia=== Image:Shangrak.JPG|Shangyrak Image:Coat of arms of Kazakhstan.svg|[[Emblem of Kazakhstan]] Image:Flag of Kyrgyzstan.svg|[[Flag of Kyrgyzstan]] [[File:151127-worlds-largest-yurt-Mary-Turkmenistan.jpg|thumb|align=right|Ak Öýi (White Building), “The World’s Largest Yurt”, is located 10 km west of Mary, Turkmenistan, dedicated on 27 November 2015.]] The wooden crown of the yurt (lang-mn, IPA-mn; шаңырақ ; lang-ky ; tüýnük) is itself emblematic in many Central Asian cultures. In old [[Kazakhstan|Kazakh]] communities, the yurt itself would often be repaired and rebuilt, but the shangyrak would remain intact, passed from father to son upon the father’s death. A family’s length of heritage could be measured by the accumulation of stains on the shangrak from decades of smoke passing through it. A stylized version of the crown is in the center of the [[coat of arms of Kazakhstan]], and forms the main image on the [[flag of Kyrgyzstan]]. Today the yurt is seen as a nationalistic symbol among many Central Asian groups, and as such, yurts may be used as cafés (especially those specialising in traditional food), museums (especially relating to national culture), and souvenir shops. In celebration of the city of Mary’s year as Cultural Capital of the Turkic World, the government of Turkmenistan constructed a yurt-shaped structure, called Ak Öýi (White Building) and described as “The World’s Largest Yurt”, of concrete, granite, aluminum, and glass. Dedicated on November 27, 2015, the structure is 35 meters high and 70 meters in diameter. According to the Turkmenistan state news agency, “A white yurt is a symbol of an age-old, distinctive historical-cultural legacy, a sign of preservation of our roots and origins.” This three-story structure includes a café, offices, and VIP apartments as well as a large auditorium with 3,000 seats. url=http://www.eurasianet.org/node/75866 cite web ===Buddhist symbolism in the Mongolian Gers=== [[Image:Yurt hearth 1.JPG|upright|thumb|left|Buddhist symbol dharmachakra is represented by the [[Dharmacakra|khorlo]] (Tib: འཀོར་ལོ།) toono. Other Buddhist symbols–[[khata|khadag]] (Tib: ཁ་བཏགས་) hangs from the toono and [[Srivatsa|dpaljibeu]] (Tib: དཔལ་གྱི་བེའུ) is present on the stove]] The design of the Mongolian Ger developed from its ancient simple forms to actively integrate with Buddhist culture. The crown—toono adopted the shape of Dharmachakra. The earlier style of toono, nowadays more readily found in Central Asian yurts, is called in Mongolia “sarkhinag toono” while the toono representing Buddhist dharmachakra is called “[[Dharmacakra|khorlo]]” (Tibetan འཀོར་ལོ།) toono. Also the shapes, colors and ornaments of the wooden elements—toono, pillars and poles of the Mongolian yurt are in accord with the artistic style found in Buddhist monasteries of Mongolia. Such yurts are called “uyangiin ger”, literally meaning “home of lyrics” or “home of melodies”. ==Western yurts== [[Image:FinishedYurt.jpg|thumb|A yurt-derived structure in the [[Mountain ranges of Colorado|Colorado mountains, USA]]]] Enthusiasts in other countries have adapted the visual idea of the yurt, a round, semi-permanent tent. Although those structures may be copied to some extent from the originals found in Central Asia, they often have some different features in their design to adapt them to different climate and use. In [[Canada]] and the [[United States]], yurts are made using [[hi-tech]] materials. They are highly engineered and built for extreme weather conditions. In addition, erecting one can take days and they are not intended to be moved often. These North American yurts are better named yurt derivations, as they are no longer round felt homes that are easy to mount, dismount and transport. North American yurts and yurt derivations were pioneered by [[William Coperthwaite]] in the 1960s, after he was inspired to build them by a National Geographic article about [[Supreme Court Justice]] [[William O. Douglas]]’s visit to Mongolia.[http://www.alternativesmagazine.com/18/kemery.html Article at Alternatives Magazine on North American Yurts], webpage, retrieved February 9, 2006 In 1978, American company, Pacific Yurts, became the first to manufacture yurts using architectural fabrics and structural engineering, paving the way for yurts to become popular attractions at ski resorts and campgrounds. Yurts are also popular in Northern Canada. In 1993, Oregon became the first state to incorporate yurts into its Parks Department as year round camping facilities. Since then, at least 17 other US States have introduced yurt camping into their own parks departments.[http://www.midwestweekends.com/plan_a_trip/stay/camping/yurts_state_parks.html Article at Midwest Weekends on Yurt Camping], webpage, retrieved December 08, 2010 In [[Europe]], a closer approximation to the Mongolian and Central Asian yurt is in production in several countries. These tents use local [[hardwood]], and often are adapted for a wetter climate with steeper [[roof]] profiles and [[waterproof]] canvas. In essence they are yurts, but some lack the felt cover and ornate features across the exterior that is present in traditional yurt. There are UK-made yurts that feature a metal frame in use in at least two [[glamping]] sites in [[Somerset]] and [[Dorset]].[http://woodlandescapeglampingholidays.co.uk/Yurt-Glamping.php Yurt Holidays in Somerset at Woodland Escape], webpage, retrieved April 06, 2017[http://www.dorsetcountryholidaysandevents.co.uk/yurt-glamping.php Yurt Holidays in Dorset at Dorset Country Holidays], webpage, retrieved April 06, 2017[https://www.bctshop.co.uk/products/nomadic-yurt Yurts from UK Company BCT Outdoors], webpage, retrieved April 06, 2017 The [[palloza]] is a traditional building found in the [[Serra dos Ancares]] in northern Spain. Bathroom Remodel in Morton Grove, IL
Project Overview
Materials Used
About Morton Grove, IL
This lovely home is located in Morton Grove, which is a village located in Cook County and is within 15 miles of Chicago. Some of the popular restaurants close to this home are Kappy’s American Grill, Mazalae Mongolian Restaurant, Pequod’s Pizza, Sri Siam Thai Restaurant, and countless others. People often visit the House of Torment Haunted House and the Great Room Escape for fun. Morton Grove is a wonderful place to live with so many fun things to do!
The Subject Property
This large, master bathroom was in need of an upgrade. The old space was outdated with a retro design as well as an outdated color scheme. The homeowners were not interested in changing the layout. They were only interested in remodeling the space into a much more modern space with a completely different and updated color scheme. Regency began by removing all flooring, walls, cabinetry, and fixtures in order to complete an entire gutting of the bathroom. This would allow for the installation of all new fixtures, floors, and walls in order to complete the modern remodel.
End Result
The new bathroom truly looks spectacular! The color change was accomplished via several changed such as converting the old, pink, standard tub with a new MAAX white tub. Another big change was the removal of the pink vanity with a beautiful black vanity topped with a cotton white granite counter top from Daltile. The Riobel lavatory faucet, Grohe showerheads, and Artos tub filler all have a brushed nickel finish, which greatly contributed to the modern style of the bathroom. The preexisting, pink toilet was also replaced with a sleek, white Kohler toilet. All of these changed beautifully blend together to convert the outdated color scheme and finishes to a very stylish and modern space. Regency was successful in converting this space to a gorgeous and stylish space that the customers will enjoy for many years.
