CVS: Choosing to specialize, smokers and profits be damned!

CVS announced they will stop selling cigarettes as they up their game as a health care provider.

You wouldn’t trust Jenny Craig if they sold Cheetos or a life coach who was slanging the latest tequila, so it makes sense to me that CVS will no longer sell cigarettes. They are walking the walk and choosing a specialty, rather than trying to be everything to everyone.

According to their latest announcement it sounds like CVS is trying to become an alternative to Urgent Care, or another option if you can’t make it to the doctor, offering valuable health care advice. Whether you’re a smoker or not, I hope you can recognize the brand identity problems for a medical advisor hocking ciggies.

And I commend CVS on the financial commitment to their new company vision. According to the Washington Post, the company expects to lose $2 Billion in annual revenue, and earnings per share will decline by 6 to 9 cents, as a result of this move. Not deadly to a company of that size but definitely putting their money where their mouth is.
