reading ang as queer is like. integral to me. but framing her trying to marry barnabas because they had sex and she's jealous as "a queer thirst for revenge" and "troubling one of heterosexuality's most cherished rituals" is. uh. no she definitely was trying to get heterosexually married
#i mean i think the ''troubling heterosexuality's rituals'' more comes from the point of marriage as a threat and a trap —#being wielded as a weapon from the side of the woman and threatening the man with dominance; ownership; and control;#or that marriage is at odds with sex and desire; that barn holds up josette as his ideal for marriage because of#money; bloodline; and *importantly* virginity — which relegates sex in service to capital and social dominance#with all her powers and her own agency afforded to her through witchcraft it's striking that the only identity angelique can conceive of#that she *wants* to achieve; to make her way through the world; is that of a wife of a wealthy man#that's not queering the system so much as making it obvious and uncomfortable.

#and I do think that last point is worth cosigning: that Ang - with her phenomenal cosmic powers! - ultimately sees marriage to a rich guy;#as THE prize in life. she wants to marry well because she wants nice clothes (there's some good reading to be done as to why Ang;#specifies she wants Josette's clothes and her suitors and her fiance and her house. if this author would do it.) and to be the mistress;#of the Old House and to arrive in a carriage. magic is nice but social conformity and standing is the end all and be all.#the first time Ang calls herself happy she has explicitly turned her back on her powers to marry a guy with the personality of cardboard;#but a private island and public success and phenomenal wealth.#can we meditate on that.#dark shadows#angelique bouchard collins#meta
