Milestone Monday

A MAXFIELD PARRISH BIRTHDAY ANNIVERSARY

On this day, July 25 in 1870, the American painter and illustrator Maxfield Parrish (1870-1966) was born in Philadelphia to Elizabeth Bancroft and artist Stephen Parrish. Maxfield Parrish’s work, especially his distinctive saturated hues and luminous colors, defined popular tastes in the post-World War I period with millions of prints of his paintings produced and his colorful illustrations seen regularly on the covers of popular magazines such as Collier's, Scribner's, Harper's Weekly, Life, and Ladies Home Journal. He was a student of American artists Robert Vonnoh and Howard Pyle, and the influence of both are evident in Parrish’s work.

Parrish’s art is noted especially for its vibrant colors, especially his blues, which he achieved through a time-consuming glazing process he invented that involved a cobalt blue base and white undercoating, which he then coated with a series of thin alternating coatings of oil and varnish. This particularly bright shade of cobalt blue often coated the skies of his landscapes, and to this day is sometimes called Parrish blue. 

The cover and black and white illustrations shown here are from the second edition of British children’s writer Kenneth Grahame’s Dream Days, published in London and New York by John Lane, The Bodley Head in 1902.This particular copy (we hold two) is another gift from our friend Jerry Buff. The color images are from the 1912 portfolio A Collection of Colour Prints by Jules Guérin [and] Maxfield Parrish published in Cleveland, Ohio, by J. H. Jensen.

Flopbb’s 2022 BBSIM PREMIERE

It’s that time again, summer is finally beginning. The air is warm despite the sun setting and filled with tangible excitement. Two weeks stuck in sequester only leaving to do press and your interviews. Will it be enough? Will America love you? Will you make strong alliances and real friends in the house?

Premiere Night

One by one youre filtered into the house after waiting through the intros on stage. Julie Chen stands before you, calling your names, asking you to enter the studio you’ll (hopefully) call home. Theres very little time to mingle and introduce yourselves before julie’s voice once again calls you into the backyard for your very first HOH competition.

After eliminating houseguests one by one eventually the vote comes down to @ashlynbuggy and @maxdoesbb

Congrats @maxdoesbb, the house has voted to make you the very first HOH of the season!

The game starts right out of the gate as @charlchen-moonves and @leotheeworld make a night-one F2. Because that always ends up well!

Tired of the noise and the socializing, @pyrrheposts finds a quiet bedroom where he vents off a little annoyance about the vibes of some of his fellow houseguests. Some of the comments seem to come across as a little harsh.

Friday

The game starts to settle in a little more the next morning when youre woken up for nominations bright and early.

As he can only bank on first impression, @maxdoesbb doesnt have reasons for picking his nominees other than “didnt really talk game last night”. He seems a little stand-offish when addressing @pyrrheposts 

Being on the block right out of the gate, @lavenderkaty manages to pull together @julieeexcheen and @skyhawkstragedy into a temporary alliance, ensuring they can protect each other in the first weeks of the game.

Saturday

The day starts off with picking players for the veto. In a DR @lavenderkaty states that she feels a little less nervous knowing she has allies in the house.

@lavenderkaty is thrilled picking her new ally @skyhawkstragedy to help win the veto. She seems confident he will keep his word if he happens to win it. 

While waiting for the veto to begin, @lavenderkaty pulls @ashlynbuggy aside to ask if she would consider using the veto. @ashlynbuggy agrees to use the veto if she wins and they form an alliance. 

In everyones least favourite competition ever, @skyhawkstragedy manages to spell the longest word correctly, winning them the first veto of the season, and the first win for his new alliance. @lavenderkaty is excited to have safety.

Sunday

As they are the first two to win competitions in the game, @maxdoesbb is interested in aligning with another strong player to have a back up shield.

Monday

As Monday begins with the veto ceremony, the houseguests gather in the living room to hear the speeches.

@pyrrheposts congratulates @skyhawkstragedy on his win but doesnt expect the veto to be used first week.

@lavenderkaty also congratulates him and asks for the veto to be used on her so they can get to know each other more.

As expected, @skyhawkstragedy uses the veto on his ally @lavenderkaty 

As one of his nominations has been vetoed, @maxdoesbb is required to name a replacement nom. He names @whoblewboobear, publicly stating they are only a pawn.

Confused by @maxdoesbb’s speech about the replacement nom being a pawn, @pyrrheposts attempts to find out why @maxdoesbb seems to dislike him so much. It seems the walls are thinner than he expected, as @leotheeworld reveals he and @charlchen-moonves heard @pyrrheposts talking shit about @maxdoesbb and others on the first night. The confrontation doesnt last long as the rest of the house seems to make up their mind that @leotheeworld is telling the truth.

Wednesday

The pressure of the game gets to me a little and I have a slight breakdown

Thursday

After a stressful first week, its finally time for the very first eviction. Julie appears on the living room tv as everyone gathers wearing their best clothes.

When prompted by Julie, @pyrrheposts stands up and apologies to the house for rubbing people the wrong way but urges people to remember this is a game and to do whats good for your game.

@whoblewboobear shouts out their family back home and reminds people they were just put up as a pawn. They have more game to play and hope to be here to play the HOH.

Six Sentence Sunday Monday

As before, I define a sentence as ending with a period, so dialogue does not necessarily count as a sentence alone. Here we have six sentences from the next instalment in my Perrin/Rand series:

The following day, they stopped by the river’s edge for over an hour, arms plunged elbow deep in the water. With no knowledge of the area, their attempts at fishing were mostly just educated guesswork based on their experiences back home. Perrin had known it was a longshot when he suggested it, but that didn’t make it any less disappointing when they finally gave up.

 “Maybe tomorrow?” Rand suggested. 

 “Maybe,” Perrin agreed, forcing a smile that he was sure Rand wasn’t fooled by.

Fluri Week 2019 - Day 1: Miss you Monday

A/N: since i’ve been busy all summer i haven’t had much time to start writing, so this is me trying to crawl back out of writer’s block through shorter drabbles concurrently working on a bigger project, promise

A bell chimed the moment Yuri pushed the window open, swinging his legs over the windowsill and into Flynn’s office. On closer inspection of his preferred entryway, he noticed a small bell tied with a thin ribbon around the window’s wooden handle. Yuri poked it once, twice, then snorted as he heard steps approaching from the adjacent room.

“What am I, a cat?”

“I believe we’ve already established that ever since you’ve started scaling the castle walls to come barging in through my window.”

Yuri rolled his eyes but didn’t look up. Instead, he poked the bell again in an attempt to decide whether or not he liked the sound of its high-pitched tinkle. “You set up an alarm system just to catch wind of my arrival? I’m flattered.”

Behind him, Flynn chuckled. “As elaborate as the thief it is meant to seize.” The smugness in his voice faded into a smile, fond and sincere. “It’s been a while, Yuri.”

Yuri paused. When he turned to face him, he made a bee line for his lips. Flynn’s surprise only lasted a second before he embraced the kiss with fervor and without questions, lacing his arms around Yuri’s waist and holding him tight. They’d had all sorts of kisses, but Yuri found that his favorite kinds were those they shared after months of absence. There was a raw longing in those kisses, a longing that hurt just as much as they brought him comfort, like burning your toungue on hot cocoa but relishing its warmth. It was as if his heart was releasing a sigh Yuri didn’t know he’d been holding.

They parted, short for breath, and Flynn tightened his grip before Yuri could shift away. He brought their foreheads together, savoring the breathless silence between them.

“I’ve missed you.” A sigh, barely a whipser brushing past his lips.

Yuri didn’t answer. Instead, he ran a finger under Flynn’s chin with a wicked grin. “Is that stubble?”

The shift from a fond smile to an annoyed scowl was immediate. “I haven’t exactly had much time to take care of that in the last few days. Not that you’d know what being this busy is like.”

A lie that Yuri knew meant he’d poked Flynn’s pristine, carefully-crafted image. It was something he took great pleasure in taking apart when it was just the two of them, the same way he did Flynn’s armor. 

“You wound me in my pride.” Yuri snickered, “I just thought you couldn’t grow any facial hair besides those old-fashioned wannabe side-burns.”

An air of challenge washed over Flynn’s face. Oh, it was on now. 

“Yeah? Then how about this?” Locked in Flynn’s iron grip, Yuri tried – and failed – to avoid Flynn rubbing his chin all over him. On his cheeks, over his collarbone, under his shirt - just about anywhere Flynn could bend, he rubbed and tickled over, masterfully dodging blows coming his way. Within minutes he had Yuri pinned against the wall, struggling to wrestle his way out and keep a straight face. 

“Not so sassy now, are we?”

“Asshole!”

“You started it!”

Laughter mingled with grunts and pants as kicks and insults were thrown haphazardly, a mess of tangled limbs soon landing a cushioned fall on Flynn’s bed. And amdist the punches, Flynn revelled in the way Yuri’s smile widened in ways he himself probably wasn’t aware of. The sight alone made him feel like wings had sprung out of his back to take him on a stroll among the summer clouds. 

Despite any of his thinly-veiled attempts to avoid having to say it, Flynn didn’t need Yuri to admit he missed him, too. That, he knew in his heart.
