Photography and architecture fans, we just wanted to mention… 'Mona Kuhn: 835 Kings Road' is a new release from @steidlverlag In '835 Kings Road,' California photographer Mona Kuhn (born 1969) reconsiders the realms of time and space within the architectural elements of the Schindler House in Los Angeles. Built by Austrian architect Rudolph M. Schindler in 1922, the house was both a social and design experiment and an avant-garde hub for intellectuals and artists in the 1920s and 1930s. For this project Kuhn collaborated with the Department of History of Art and Architecture at UC Santa Barbara, and gained access to Schindler’s private archives including blueprints, letters and notes. Alongside reproducing some of these for the first time in this book, Kuhn reinterprets the dichotomy between memory and record in a series of color photos, and solarized gelatin silver prints, a technique favored by the surrealists. The enigmatic subject of her solarized pictures is a fictional, ethereal figure inspired by a letter from Schindler to a mysterious woman. Kuhn’s impressionistic photos render this female presence physical, even as it seems to be dematerializing: fleeting images that question the very nature of photography as record. More via linkinbio. Text by @silvia__perea & #DavidDorenbaum @monakuhnstudio @adamuseum #monakuhnstudio #architecture #RudolphSchindler #schiindlerhouse #RudolphSchindlerhouse #modernism #midcenturymodern #midcentury #ucsb #UCSantaBarbara #SantaBarbara @makcenter https://www.instagram.com/p/Ca7P_MyOKCQ/?utm_medium=tumblr

✨✨A big thank you to all of our Zoom audiences this week for “Fit to Print”! Ksenia Nouril and I were interviewed this past March about our collaboration and the genesis of the exhibition for the current issue of Musée Magazine. Many thanks to the amazing @andreablanch for her support of us and our project! ✨✨ Link in bio🔑🔑 Posted @withregram • @museemagazine ISSUE 25: Curation OUT NOW! For a word used when referring to organizing a sock drawer, ‘curate,’ whose root word, curare meaning, “to care for,” implies a parenthood of sorts between the curator and the curated. Issue No. 25 of Musée Magazine explores different approaches to art curation. @thesarahmeister , former curator for the Robert B. Menschel Department of Photography at MoMA, uses it to garner a sense of respect and wonder for art, while Martin Barnes, Senior Curator of Photographs at the V&A, sees himself as a “cultural producer,” and @sirsargent , director and curator at Gagosian, focuses on black bodies, pushing back against institutional elitism in photography. Featuring interviews with sixteen curators, including @isolde_brielmaier (Curator-at-Large at ICP), @coreykeller510 (curator of photography at SF MoMA), @grace.noh (Exhibitions Manager at Fotografiska), @shawn_waldron (curator at Getty Images), and @davidcampany (Managing Director of Programs at ICP), and work from @paulomibasu (artist), @monakuhnstudio (artist), and Stan Douglas (artist), CURATION explores what it means to be a curator in the art world — and how it is far more than taste-making. Posted @withregram • @bjp1854 “I like to say my best work starts when those I photograph forget they’re naked. The power of my work lies in their confidence,” Mona Kuhn says, speaking of her retrospective monograph charting over 20 years of work. Spending her career studying the human figure in the nude, the hefty volume is a comprehensive survey of the intimate relationships the Brazilian photographer is known for. Read her interview via the link in bio. Photo: @monakuhnstudio Books: @thamesandhudson https://www.instagram.com/p/CMSp5pXAlxQ/?igshid=4ngpap6ars4v

Bella Thorne Isn't the First Celebrity to Channel Marilyn Monroe
Tumblr media
Douglas Kirkland’s 1961 photo shoot with Marilyn Monroe is one of her most famous. (Photo: Douglas Kirkland/Corbis via Getty Images)
Photographer Douglas Kirkland‘s 1961 photo shoot helped to shed an intimate light on one of the most tantalizing figures in Hollywood at the time, actress and model Marilyn Monroe. For the famous photo series “An Evening With Marilyn Monroe,” the star posed unclothed and wrapped in white bed sheets. She apparently asked everyone except Kirkland to leave the room while shooting — which helped in producing the unique, natural quality of the photos.
Although one might deem the project inimitable, many stars have actually attempted to channel the iconic photos of Monroe for different publications. For Bazaar.com’s latest project, the magazine recreated some of the artful images from Kirkland’s shoot with the help of outspoken teen star Bella Thorne.
Like Monroe, the 19-year-old posed with nothing but white silk sheets for the spread, which was shot by Mona Kuhn and styled by Kathryn Typaidos.
"The world needs more honesty…I have problems like every person, so if I can help somebody else then that's fucking dope.”— @BellaThorne channels #MarilynMonroe while opening up about fame, love and finding success beyond #Disney. A post shared by Harper's BAZAAR (@harpersbazaarus) on Apr 12, 2017 at 5:30am PDT
Thorne posted an image from the shoot in late March, but later deleted the post. At the time, she captioned the image with a quote from Monroe, “The body is meant to be seen and not covered up.”
@bellathorne: "The body is meant to be seen not all covered up" #marilynmonroe #flashback

While Thorne’s shoot mirrors one version of the famous sex symbol, other celebrities have channeled versions of Monroe as well.
Model Kendall Jenner curled her hair and put on her best red lip to imitate the icon in a video for Love magazine, directed by Rankin and styled by Katie Grand, the publication’s editor in chief. The publication posted a number of clips from the shoot on its Instagram page.

“Kendall had come to London for the Love 17 launch as she’d photographed the cover stars, and Rankin hadn’t shot with her before, and had really wanted to make this video with her,” Grand said about the project. ”She had the time so we just did it. It was a super fun day as ever with Kendall.”

Jenner’s older sister, Kim Kardashian, also posed as Monroe for Vogue Brasil‘s June 2015 issue. Unlike Jenner’s recreation, Kardashian styled her hair like Monroe’s, as her hair was the same shade at the time of the shoot.

The social media star also posted a video clip on her Instagram channel from the shoot, which received more than a half million likes.

For the project, Kardashian also posed topless with black leather gloves.
The spot came after Kate Upton landed the cover of Vanity Fair’s 100th anniversary issue in October 2013. The model’s hair and makeup incredibly similar to Monroe’s. The issue was shot by Annie Leibovitz.

But not everyone was a fan. Kanye West, husband of Kim, had some choice words to say about Upton’s cover. “Kate Upton ain’t Marilyn Monroe,” he said during an appearance on a popular radio show in 2013. “Kim is Marilyn Monroe. You know that. She was controversial; she’s controversial.”
Contrary to his opinion, Upton has been picked by many publications to channel the actress. For Love magazine’s advent calendar in 2017, the actress garnered comparisons to the icon.
Beautiful Kate Upton is our final #loveadvent ❤ watch the full video on LOVE ❤️ by @douginglish @seanknight @kateupton ❤ THANK YOU EVERYONE 77 MILLION VIEWS ❤❤❤❤❤

Another celebrity who has posed as Monroe? Miley Cyrus for the March 2014 issue of German Vogue.

The photo, in which Cyrus is featured topless, was shot by renowned photographer Mario Testino.
In 2008, two famous celebrities also gave Marilyn vibes on magazine covers. Lindsay Lohan posed with just a pink piece of fabric for New York magazine’s spring 2008 fashion issue, recreating Bert Stern’s photographs of Monroe’s last photo shoot before her death, “The Last Sitting.”
Tumblr media

Lohan’s cover was photographed by Bert Stern himself. He was interested in picking Lohan for the project because she fell under the umbrella of “controversial women” and he believed “she had a lot more depth to her,” he told New York.
Nicole Kidman also posed as Monroe for Harper’s Bazaar Australia’s March issue in 2008.

Across the cover read the line “Some Like It Hot” — a reference to one of Monroe’s most famous films.
An avid Monroe fan, Madonna was once quoted as saying, “I’d love to be a memorable figure in the history of entertainment in some sexual, comic, tragic way. I’d like to leave the impression that Marilyn Monroe did, to be able to arouse so many different feelings in people.” The pop singer posed as Monroe for Vanity Fair in 1991.

Monroe left a legacy and level of star power that many celebrities have attempted to achieve — and many more will likely continue to do so for years to come.

Happy Birthday Ed Ruscha! The photo with Ed and Mona Kuhn was taken with a Polaroid SX-70 and a Polaroid SX-70 Time Zero film in Los Angeles, October 2004 during the work of Ed’s book ”Then & Now, Hollywood Boulevard 1973-2004”. This is some of many instant artists portraits that you can find in the book ”Once There Were Polaroids”.
