My spouse and I are starting Kaiju Summer tonight. We have the Criterion Collection Godzilla set (15 movies), two Gamera collections (8 and 4 movies), plus Mothra on the DVR. If we don’t get burned out, we also have Pacific Rim, The Host, and a bunch of MST3K/RiffTrax versions of other kaiju movies.

ゴジラ Godzilla 前世の霊魂が東京を舞台とする！The soul of a past life takes center stage in Tokyo! 1954（昭和29）年11月に公開された「ゴジラ」は、水爆実験の影響で安住の地を追い出された大怪獣が東京に上陸するというスペクタクル作品である。東宝プロデューサー・田中友幸は、アメリカ映画「原子怪獣現わる」(1953年)をヒントにして「海底二万哩（マイル）から来た大怪獣」という仮題の企画案を出し、これが「ゴジラ」に発展していく。ゴジラという名前が、ゴリラとクジラの合成語というのはけっこう有名な話だが、この名前を持つ人物が実は存在していた。その当時の東宝の演劇部社員・網倉志朗のニックネームが「ゴジラ」で、その話を聞いた田中が、語呂の良さを気に入り、怪獣の名前に使ったのだ。今ではゴジラは巨大怪獣の代名詞になっているが、それ以前にゴジラと呼ばれた人物がいたというのは、何とも意外な話である。田中友幸プロデューサー The 1954 film Godzilla is a spectacle about a giant monster, displaced from its home due to the effects of a hydrogen bomb test, landing in Tokyo. Producer Tomoyuki Tanaka of Toho was inspired by the American film The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (1953) and came up with a project proposal titled The Giant Monster From 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, which later evolved into Godzilla. It’s well-known that the name “Godzilla” is a blend of “gorilla” and “whale,” but it turns out there was actually a person with that name. Shiro Amikura, an employee in Toho’s theater department at the time, had the nickname “Godzilla,” and when Tanaka heard the story, he liked the sound of it and decided to use it for the monster. Today, Godzilla is synonymous with giant monsters, but it’s surprising to learn that there was a person named Godzilla before the monster existed. 映画の中で「ゴジラ」という名は、古生物学者・山根博士によって呼称された。大戸島に古来から伝わる怪獣の名にちなんでいる。In the film, the name “Godzilla” is used by the paleontologist Dr. Yamane, and it is inspired by the name of a monster passed down through legends on Odo Island. Chris: This is the American version of Godzilla with Raymond Burr inserted and pretty much all value and meaning of the film removed because of the Americanization, fun to see this in the Chicago Svengoolie hosted horror show but the original film is the one to see so Avoid.

Richie: This version is awful, give me the original any day, Avoid.
