Claretcup Cactus - Echinocereus triglochidiatus

Such a nice, good, cactus; a reliable bloomer in its small, dry, and sandy-soil filled pot. Huggable even. I love this thing. Too bad it would hurt to do just that. So I leave it alone.

For the record I don’t hug plants. I usually reserve that for the ones I love and don’t have spines and needles.

Last week, a friend was visiting from Chicago. I took him up to Joshua Tree National Park (among other places). Two of the photos from that visit. Top is a chuckwalla. I think she’s a she. Boys have some red coloration on their sides. The bottom is a Mojave Mound cactus, aka Claret cup cactus.

Final superbloom photo hike of the year

On Wednesday (May 9), I visited four spots in Joshua Tree National Park to enjoy the final fling of the 2019 spring desert superbloom and to take some photographs. I knew that this final desert wildflower posing wouldn’t exhibit in sweeping carpets of color, but with blotches of bold colors. I also knew that the cactus blooms would be a significant part of this last show, but I was a little disappointed because the odd spring weather has delayed the blooming of some of the cacti (foxtail, prickly pear, some of the cholla, for example). Too bad, because I leave the desert in a week to return to Chicago, so I’ll miss those blooms. But, overall, what I saw yesterday was terrific. I also bumped into several species of lizards that I normally don’t see. I’ll post photos of those guys separately.

So, here are some of I saw yesterday. Too bad I can’t capture the odors, because some of the smells were sweet.
