Desert Flower Part 4
7 Years Later,
Yuri had finished tying on her leaf headband to pull up her hair after she put on her red shirt and brown shorts and blue sandals. 13 years old and she was finally an official Leaf shinobi! She quickly left her house, to meet up with Naruto, Sakura and Sasuke.
As Yuri turned around the corner, she stopped when she saw a small gathering up ahead. She saw Naruto, Sakura, three kids Moegi and Udon and Konohamaru, who always followed Naruto around. She frowned when she saw Konohamaru being held in the air by a strange boy, dressed completely in black with something wrapped up and strapped to his back, wearing purple warpaint on his face. There was another ninja, standing beside him. She had sandy blond hair tied up in four pigtails, wearing a light purple of the shoulders garment that extended down to her knees, red sash around her waist, fishnets over her shoulders, on her right calf and left leg. Yuri's eyes widen, recognizing her. Temari! Yuri smirked and grinned ear to ear, and slowly walked over, keeping quiet, trying not to make her presence known. As she got closer, Yuri lightly poked Temari behind her back. Temari jumped startled.
"What the!?" She quickly turned around and so did the other boy, who was holding Konohamaru, startled as well. Temari blinked, completely shock and stared at Yuri, like she had seen a ghost.
"Yuri?" Temari sputtered.
"Hi." Yuri smiled. Temari smirked back at her.
"Well, well, I didn't think I would run into you so soon."
"Wait, Temari, you know her?" the boy dressed in black questioned. Yuri blinked at him, not recognizing him.
"Uh, who are you?"
"I should as you the same thing!" he shouted. Temari nudged him in the side.
"Kankuro, you idiot! You don't recognize her? You played with her a little." she hissed at him. Kankuro's eye widen, now realizing, who Yuri was.
"Wait a minute, you mean to tell me this is the sneezy girl back at the village?!" Yuri's eyes widen.
"Kankuro? Is that you!?" she said in disbelief, but also embarrassed hearing her old nickname. "I'll have you know that my immune system is better thank you. Man, I barely even recognize you in that get up. What's with the make up?"
"It's war paint!" Kankuro exclaimed, insulted. Naruto and Sakura were still watching still confused.
"Yuri, you know these people?" Sakura asked her. Yuri nodded.
"Yeah, they're old friends back my home village." She told them.
"Old friends, huh? Well, tell that punk to drop Konohamaru!" Naruto told her, narrowing his eyes at Kankuro, glaring at him.
"Yeah! Put me down!" Konohamaru shouted.
"Not until I teach you a lesson." Kankuro smirked.
"Come on, Kankuro, let him go. If he shows up, we're going to get into a lot of trouble." Temari tried to talk him out of it.
"Yeah, whatever he did, he's just a kid. He wasn't thinking." Yuri told him. Just as Kankuro was about to punch, Konohamaru, a rock shot out and hit Kankuro in his wrist, making him drop Konohamaru. Everyone looked up to see Sasuke in the tree, narrowing his eyes on the two ninjas, juggling some rocks in his hands. Temari blushed.
"Sasuke!" Sakura squealed, happily. Yuri rolled her eyes, annoyed.
"Honestly, what do you see in that guy? He's not that great." She murmured, but Sakura heard her.
"What did you just say!?" She screamed, angrily. Sasuke still kept his eyes on the two Sand ninjas.
"You ninjas aren't from around here. Why are you here?" He demanded.
"Kankuro, you're a disgrace to our village." a deep quiet voice answered, coldly.
A boy was in the tree next to Sasuke, hanging upside down with his arms crossed. He had red hair, dark circles around his eyes, a red tattoo above his left eye, wearing a black body suit with an open neck with t-shirt like sleeves and full-length leggings. There was a white sash over his right shoulder to his left hip, to carry a large gourd that he had strapped to his back. He had his hidden Sand headband, tied to his sash as well. Yuri, recognized him almost immediately.
"Gaara?" Yuri frowned, not believing what she was seeing. Her eyes widen and she smiled and waved at him. "Gaara!" Temari and Kankuro tensed up when they saw Yuri starting walk over to Gaara and tried to stop her. Suddenly, sand came out from Gaara's gourd and whipped out at Yuri. Yuri quickly jumped back, dodging the warning shot. She frowned, looking up at Gaara.
"What's the big idea!?" She demanded. Temari held her back.
"You're annoying." Gaara spoke. Yuri's eyes widen and she pushed Temari off of her.
"Why are you acting like you don't know me? Gaara, it's me, Yuri!" She told him. "I know it's you! I recognize that bright red hair anywhere!"
"I know no such person and you're getting on my nerves. I will kill you if you get in my way." he said, coldly. Yuri's eyes widen in shock.
"What about our promise!?" She shouted. Then Yuri saw that Gaara wasn't wearing the ribbon that she had tied to his wrist, so many years ago. Where was it!?
"I made no promise." Gaara spoke. Then he vanished in a cloud of sand, shocking everyone and suddenly reappearing next to Temari and Kankuro, who backed away from him a little. Yuri still kept her gaze on him, silently. What happened to him? This wasn't the timid boy she knew back at the village. His eyes held a bloodlust to them.
"You still didn't tell us why you're here!" Sakura shouted. "The Hidden Sand Village is one of Konoha's close allies. But according our treaty, your ninjas aren't permitted to cross the border without permission."
Temari pulled out her passport, showing it. "Weren't you told anything? We're here to take the Chuunin Exam."
"Chuunin exam?" Naruto asked her.
"Ninjas from the Hidden Sand Village along with ninjas from other nations are sent to compete against Konoha's own candidates. Mainly to maintain the skill of all shinobi at the same high level of excellence. Also to foster friendship and understanding between ninja and of course to maintain the balance of power between the lands themselves." She explained. Gaara turned to Sasuke.
"What's your name?" Gaara asked Sasuke.
"Sasuke Uchiha." Sasuke smirked.
"Hey, I bet you want to know my name!" Naruto smiled.
"Come on, we're going." Gaara started to walk away, ignoring Naruto. Kankuro followed behind him quietly. Temari shot Yuri a glance as if telling her sorry and she quickly followed after them.
"Gaara!" Yuri shouted at him, but he ignored her. Naruto and Sakura walked over to her and Sasuke hopped down from the tree, keeping his eyes on the three Sand ninjas.
"What is up with that guy?" Naruto asked. "Wasn't he the one you were always telling me about? I thought he was your friend?"
"I don't know. Two can play this game." Yuri frowned.
"Come on, let's go meet with Kakashi-sensei. He had something that he wanted to tell us." Sakura said.
"I wonder what he wants now?" Sasuke questioned.
"You know he's going to make us wait for him to show up. Might as well take our time getting there." Yuri suggested. Naruto, Yuri, Sakura, and Sasuke left. Yuri noticed a strange white bird flying in the sky heading to the Hokage building, wondering what it was then she quickly followed after her team. They waited at the bridge that Kakashi told them to him at. Another hour went by and Kakashi poof himself on top of a pillar and waved down at them.
"Sorry, I'm late. I wandered off a little."
"YOU LIAR!" Naruto and Sakura shouted at him.
"What is it that you wanted to tell us?" Yuri asked him. Kakashi pulled out four slips of paper that were forms.
"I recommended the four of you to take the chuunin exams." he told them.
"What?" Yuri, Sasuke, Naruto and Sakura all asked at once, surprised.
"All you have to do is fill out these forms and show up tomorrow at the academy. It's completely up to you if you want to or not. Just show up at room 301 around 4:00." Kakashi told them, handing out the forms. The four took the forms from him.
"Good luck!" Kakashi waved and poof in a cloud of smoke, vanishing.
"There's going to be a lot of tough competition." Sasuke murmured.
"Like strange guy with the make-up." Naruto added and shivered when Gaara came into his mind. "And him..." Sasuke and Yuri looked at him.
"Well, what do you say? Are we all in or not?" Yuri asked them.
"I'm definitely in! I'm not going to let anyone beat me!" Naruto shouted.
"I'm in." Sasuke replied. Yuri turned to Sakura.
"Sakura?"
"I'm not so sure about this." She murmured. Yuri's eyes widened.
"Really? Why? I thought you would be. You're the smartest ninja in the entire village. You're in the top of our class." She spoke.
"Until you showed up." Sakura spoke, sarcastically. Yuri's eyes widen a little before they dropped, slightly.
"Come on, Sakura, don't you think your being a little mean?" Naruto spoke.
"We can't do this without you, Sakura. You're apart of our team. We need you." Yuri told her. Sakura's eyes widen a little in shock.
"Alright. I'm in." She smiled.

Of Dreams and Nightmares V
Pairing: Genma x fem!Reader
Genre: romance, bit angsty
Wordcount: ~1.7k
Warnings: explicit sexual content, language
Track: twocolors – Bloodstream
Of Dreams and Nightmares masterlist
“Looks like I have to restock for next time.”, I sighed, fixing a few strands of hair while walking into my kitchen.
I wasn’t sure if I liked to admit it, but the sex had been good. Not mind-blowing, life-changing god-like but definitely great and first and foremost satisfying. And for now, it didn’t seem to make things awkward between us. That’s what calmed me down. The relief that we were still the same as before.
“I hope you don’t need a next time.”, Genma responded, working on the coffee machine with his back to me.
Something about the way he said the word need pricked up my ears. He emphasized it but I couldn’t pinpoint his tone. I shook my head, pushing that thought aside. Instead, I knotted my hitai-ate on the back of my head.
Genma slid a mug for me over my kitchen island and we sipped our coffees in silence, before we headed to the booth at Konoha’s gates.
Of course, Izumo and Kotetsu were on duty again. Had Kakashi not assigned the next shift to Genma and me, I would assume they were actually living in that thing. On duty day and night.
“Damn, you two look like you just fucked.” Kotetsu commented as soon as we were within earshot. “You know, Izumo? She got that look all the ladies and gentlemen have after fucking with Konoha’s most desired bachelor.”
I clicked my tongue. “First of all, I think Kakashi’s Konoha’s most desired bachelor and second we know the two of you have been fucking too. Hell, the entirety of Konoha knows what’s going on between you two.”
Izumo’s face turned red as a tomato, while Kotetsu looked at least a bit embarrassed.
“And if there was ever just a single doubt, your reaction right now wiped them out.”, Genma added with a smirk. “Now get outta there, you lovebirds. We’re on duty now.”
They packed their things up and left down the street towards the dango shop, fingers loosely intertwined. The village knew about them, but this was the first time they were confident enough to show their affection in public – at least a little bit. And because everyone knew, nobody glared at them.
“Did I just make Izumo and Kotetsu go official?”
Genma, who had his face buried in his backpack, lifted his head and threw a glance after them. “I hope so, it’s about time.”, he chuckled. “Ah, there it is!” Pulling a deck of cards out of his backpack, we settled in for our shift.
A lively ambience prevailed around Konoha. Kids were running around, girls walked along the busy streets gossiping and birds drifted on a soft breeze. Genma had rested his feet on the booth’s counter and his arms crossed in front of his chest.
Konohamaru, Moegi and Udon stopped by when they left for a mission from the daimyou and Ino and Chouji accompanied Shikamaru on his trip to Sunagakure. The latter team was personally sent off by Kakashi which surprised me a bit.
“I thought Shikamaru’s trip was an unofficial one?”, I questioned Genma without looking away from them. “Didn’t Kakashi finish all matters with Gaara when we were in Suna?”
He clicked his tongue. “Maybe there’s just this littleofficial matter Shikamaru can take care of with Gaara while he’s there. The It’s-not-urgent-but-would-be-nice-to-handle-it-sooner-than-later-matter, you know?”
We shrugged, putting it off as weird but nothing concerning and got back to work – shuffling the cards for our next round of Cheat.
“Now this is definitely getting odd.”, Genma remarked an hour later, skeptically chewing on his senbon.
We looked at each other with cocked eyebrows when Kakashi once again accompanied a team to the gates. This time it was Ebisu with his current team of genin. A kind of team Kakashi normally wouldn’t bring to the gates. Genma was right. This was getting really odd. After they left, Kakashi waved and smiled at us again on his way back.
Genma let out a deep sigh. “I swear to God, if that happens a third time, I’m gonna–”
“You gonna what?” Kakashi appeared in a wall of smoke squatting on the counter of the booth, barely missing Genma’s feet. “Everything okay?”
Rising both eyebrows, I didn’t even try to hide my distrust. He did a bad job at covering concern with alleged casualness. From the corner of my eye, I saw Genma flashing me a glare, his face showing no emotions.
“Yes, everything’s fine. It’s a quiet morning today.”, I put an obviously faked smile on my lips, not touching upon Kakashi’s tone. “Izumo and Kotetsu didn’t mention any unusual occurrences either.”
Kakashi nodded a little absently. “That’s good, that’s good.” His eyes formed crescents when he planted a smile on his face – a genuine one, unlike mine. “I trust the both of you that you know, what you’re doing.”
And with a poof he was gone.
His last sentence struck something in me. The way he worded it was almost the same as the morning he caught me leaving Genma’s room. Something was up but for now it wasn’t enough to make a fuss about.
“What the fuck was that?”, Genma breathed out, before chewing on his senbon. Something he mostly did, when something felt wrong to him.
I shook my head absently. “Absolutely no fucking clue.”
The rest of our shift went by smoothly, I had beaten him in quite a few rounds of Cheat, but he had managed to beat me just as often and when Raidou and Iwashi came to take the place of us, Kakashi hadn’t brought any other team to the gates or otherwise appeared in front of us.
“Any concerning incidents?”, Iwashi asked casually while flicking through the book everyone had to sign when entering Konoha.
Genma and I exchanged questioning glances. Was Kakashi’s behavior to be considered concerning? It had been unusual, yes, but not really concerning.
“Not really, I guess. Kakashi send off some teams but that’s just unusual.” I tried to sound just as casual as Raidou, but I didn’t know how well it worked.
Raidou shrugged, unpacking his stuff for their shift. “Maybe he just wanted a last breath of fresh air before getting buried under tons of paperwork without Shikamaru.”
“Oh, shrimp! I forgot my last report at home!”, I noticed when packing up my things. “Genma, you can go ahead and I’ll get it really quick, okay? See you in Kakashi’s office in a moment!” Without waiting for an answer, I went off. He wouldn’t say no anyway.
When I arrived at the office, nobody was standing in front of the door but I heard voices coming through the door, so I supposed Genma was already reporting back from our shift. As a small apology I had brought coffee for the three of us.
“For fuck’s sake, Kakashi! I’m not having this conversation in your office when someone – most importantly she – could walk in any moment.” Genma’s voice was heated, on the verge of absolutely pissed.
I stopped dead in my tracks, when I recognized his voice. A pissed Genma wasn’t something anyone wanted to deal with.
Kakashi’s voice sounded very insistent through the door. “I’ve known you since our academy days, that’s over twenty years. I know how you look at people and I see – even without a Sharingan – how you look at her!”
“You’ve known her for just as long!”, Genma retorted. “You know her just as well, so you should see that she doesn’t look at me the same way.”
A moment of total silence passed. I could hear my blood rushing through my body. I was pretty certain they were talking about me and I didn’t wanna hear another word of their conversation but I couldn’t move a muscle. I was paralyzed and doomed to stay where I was. My eyes wide in shock, I stared at the ground before me.
Kakashi’s muffled chuckle could be heard through the door. “I bet that changed when–”
Hands slammed on a table. “Hatake...” It was almost a growl, warning the other to not provoke him any further. I could almost hear him gritting his teeth.
All strength left my limbs and the same second the tray with our coffees fell to the ground, my body followed and I landed on my knees. Realization hit me like a truck. Genma liked me.
One burning question ran through my mind. Did I like him too? I liked spending time with him but that’s normal for friends. My heart didn’t really race whenever I saw him, only sometimes, and my face didn’t heat up when thinking about him. But had dreamt about him that one time. Then again, this had only been one time, when my brain was pretty fucked up. Was it fixed now, tho?
“Only one more question: If she asked you to fuck her again, would you do it?”
My heart skipped a beat. I didn’t wanna hear the answer to that question. My brain screamed at me to get up, but my body was numb. Still unable to move, I kneeled on the ground when Genma’s voice sounded through the door.
“If that was all to discuss, I’ll leave for my next mission, Lord Sixth.” He practically spat out the title. It was his way of saying that he was done talking. Especially over private matters.
Footsteps carried over to the door, before it got ripped open. Genma came out and was about to rush past me, when he spotted me still kneeling on the floor in a sea of coffee.
Coming to an abrupt halt, he looked down at me. “Fuck!”, he cursed. “Hey, do you need help?” His face came to level with mine.
Slowly I lifted my gaze to look at him. His eyes were filled with softness. My heart started racing and my face heated up. Had his lips always looked so inviting? My eyes wandered further up till they locked with his. His chestnut brown eyes glowed with tenderness and that’s when I realized continuing this would be wrong. I would take advantage of him, if we would keep this up. As long as I used him to scare away my nightmares, this was toxic. I wasn’t in love. I was addicted.

MitsuChouWeek, Day 3!
Day 3: With Pets
“I’ve got to admit that a D -rank mission once in a while is nice; it’s easy money” Chou Chou says, cuddling the three puppies she was taking for a walk for the kennel “And I don’t mind walking dogs; these guys are so cute!”
“Are they?”
She turns to glare at her partner for the mission, who was totally not cute. Curse Shikadai the Chuunin for pairing him up with Mitsuki; she would’ve rather gone with Sarada!
…But at least she didn’t need to stay behind to clean the kennel like her friend did. Her and Inojin, that poor sucker.
“They are!” Chou Chou hisses, though it probably wouldn’t do any good “But I suppose going after those runaway puppies would’ve been fun, too.”
“Shikadai is in charge, so leaving the task that needs most tact to him was the right call” Mitsuki says “Though Boruto lacks tact, so that might hold them back.”
“More like it will hold them back” she says “Shikadai should’ve gone with Inojin.”
Mitsuki tilts his head.
“I don’t think teaming Sarada and Boruto up without supervision would be the best of ideas; they’d just get in to a fight” he says, and the girl knows he’s right. However, she counters it easily: “I could’ve gone with Sarada, and Boruto with you.”
“Perhaps, but that would’ve ruined the practice of working with different people” Mitsuki says “Did Moegi-sensei not lecture your team about the importance of being able to work with others than just your three-man cell?”
“She sure did” Chou Chou says “But we already did that at the academy too.”
“There is no better teacher than experience, right?” Mitsuki smiles “And we better not get rusty.”
“But our teams work well together anyway” Chou Chou said “So choosing some other teams would’ve- whoah!”
One of the puppies Chou Chou had been walking suddenly dashed off, and while the girl managed to keep her hold on the leash, she’d been mid step and lost her balance, causing her to fall forward. Mitsuki’s reflexes were fast though as he released his own dogs, catching Chou Chou with one arm around her waist while the other reached out several meters to snatch the lively puppy up so that it wouldn’t get hurt when the leash no longer gave in.
“…Thanks” Chou Chou says, her face reddening “Good reflexes.”
“I am a shinobi after all” Mitsuki says as he steadies Chou Chou and puts the puppy down. The girl frowns, seeing that as an insult to her own, slower reflexes “Are you saying I should’ve been able to react to that faster?”
The smile Mitsuki gives her is all that Chou Chou needs to grab him by the collar, none too pleased.
“Don’t get so cocky just because I made one mistake!” she hisses. From the corner of her eye, she notices the puppies start to run around them, but since she still has a hold on all three leashes, she ignores it. They won’t be running away.
“I didn’t even say anything” Mitsuki defends himself, hands up in front of himself as a sign of peace. Jabbing his chest with her finger, Chou Chou says: “Look, you-!”
That’s as far as she gets, before she hears a bark, and then something tightens around her. And around Mitsuki. The next moment, they’re pressed close together, the leashes she’s still holding keeping them in place. The puppies had circled around them before going far enough to tighten the leashes.
“Great, just great!” Chou Chou snaps, fighting back a blush “Did someone train them to do this?”
“I wouldn’t put it past Shikadai” Mitsuki says, far less embarrassed than Chou Chou. In fact, he’s more amused than anything “Or past Inojin.”
“No kidding” she says “…Mitsuki, where are the puppies you’re supposed to be walking?”
Mitsuki blinks. He looks around, as much as their tied-up state lets him, at least.
“…Not in my line of sight, that’s for sure” he says, sweat dropping “Guess we got the puppy hunting mission you wanted after all.”
“…We are not telling the others about this!”
“Agreed” Mitsuki says. Now, it was time to chase some puppies.
…Once they untangled themselves, that is. That might take a while.

Ko-fi
After Team Seven returned to Konohagakure they had a week to rest and recover from their C-turned-A mission.
Since she had been mostly unharmed Shin used her free time to explore more her newfound sensitivity to chakra. From what she had observed during their mission, she was the only who had developed said ability and she couldn’t help but wonder. She thought of asking Kakashi or even Iruka about it, but both had been strangely busy those days so she ended up doing some solo training to practice it more.
She had thought of going to the library to do some research about it, but the mere idea of being in a room surrounded by books and scrolls all day was enough to make hives raise on her skin.
Deciding to focus on a more hands-on strategy Shin decided to try sensing and analyzing the chakra of the people in the village. However, she was quickly overwhelmed by their numbers and unable to focus on just one energy. So she decided to go to training grounds that were surrounded by nature, where she could focus on the chakra of the animals and plants around her. Sometimes Naruto would join her there, and these chakra-sensing sessions quickly turned into sparring matches. After those matches, once they were both too exhausted to keep going, Naruto would sometimes volunteer to be Shin’s guinea pig in her special training, allowing her to use his chakra as a focusing point to improve her sensing abilities.
On their last free day, Naruto had done a full functional circuit around her and Shin had managed to follow his every movement with her eyes closed, only by sensing his chakra.
“It’s kind of creepy, Shin-chan. It means you can kinda watch me use the bathroom since we live so close, believe it.”
Once their week off was over, Kakashi had summoned them for a team meeting early on the next morning.
Shin had grown so used to go to bed late in the night - sometimes early in the morning - and waking up in the afternoon that Naruto had to use the key she had given him in case of emergencies to invade her apartment and physically detach her from her bed.
—
However, their teacher himself had arrived a whole hour late.
“So sorry I’m late.” Kakashi spoke and from his tone alone Shin knew he wasn’t sorry in the slightest. “I got lost in the path of life.”
Shin felt like a zombie and could only watch in silence as Naruto demanded exciting missions from their teacher, barely registering one every two words the boy said.
Naruto-chan, how I wish I had your energy.
“Relax, Naruto. I’ll give your missions soon enough.” Kakashi said. “Before that though… Shin-kun! Can you wake up and hear me out?”
Shin startled at her name being called and only then noticed she was nodding off so bad she had a bit of drool falling from her slack jaw.
“Y-Yes, Kakashi-sensei!” The girl said, now wide awake and blushing furiously as she rubbed the back of her hand against her mouth.
“I need you to go to this address.” Kakashi said, offering her a piece of paper. “This is your mission for today.”
Shin took the paper from his hands, staring at Kakashi as if he had grown a second head.
“What?! How come only Shin-chan has a special mission?” Naruto complained. “Give me something too Kakashi-sensei! I’ll prove to you how much I’ve grown, believe it!”
“Naruto, I told you I had a mission for you three didn’t I? Learn some patience.” Kakashi said. “And you should get going Shin-kun. You’re already late, you know?”
Shin pouted at her teacher and quickly opened the folded paper to read the address in it. To her frustration the place was on the other side of the village.
With a sigh, Shin bid her friends goodbye and started to run towards the place.
—
It was well into the afternoon when Shin was dismissed from her… “mission”. And she couldn’t help the big smile stretching on her face as she made her way back. She hoped to find Naruto and the others on their usual after-mission meeting spot. She was so excited to tell them the news!
I can’t believe it! I wonder if Kakashi-sensei had the chance to talk to them yet? Ahhh! This is so great! I can’t wait to tell Naruto-chan! And Sakura-chan and Sasuke-kun as well!
To Shin’s glee, when she turned the corner she found Naruto and Sakura standing on a street together. To her surprise there were three others with them.
“Konohamaru-kun? Moegi-chan? Udon-kun?” Shin called as she approached the party. “What are you guys doing here?”
The trio smiled at seeing Shin andMoegi was quick to attach herself to one of her hands.
“Shin-nee! Nii-chan said he’d play Ninja with us today! Come play with us too!”
Shin was quick to smile and nod at Moegi. “Sure! But can it wait for a bit? There was something I wanted to talk abou-”
Shin noticed she had lost the others’ attention as Sakura approached. She stopped talking just in time to hear Konohamaru whispering to Naruto with a sly smile on his face.
“Tell us, Nii-chan. Is she your girlfriend?” The younger boy asked, obviously referring to Sakura.
Shin froze immediately. Oh boy, this won’t end well.
Naruto laughed. “Even you kids can see she’s crazy about me, huh?”
Shin’s jaw dropped as she stared at her soon-to-be-dead friend in disbelief. She couldn’t believe Naruto would gamble with his life like that! Once she recomposed herself, Shin turned to a fuming Sakura with the most disarming smile she could muster.
“Sakura-chan plea-”
Shin was unable to speak further. In a blink of an eye Sakura had punched Naruto, making him fly through the wooden fence behind them.
Shin stared at the fallen Naruto from over her shoulder and swallowed.
Scary, Sakura-chan.
Konohamaru took Naruto’s pains and opened his mouth and, before Shin could do anything about it, words were already leaving it.
“What kind of girlfriend are you? You’re a witch, and ugly too!”
Shin’s jaw dropped so wide she was sure she had dislocated it.
“Sakura-chan! Please calm down!” She yelled, putting herself in front of Konohamaru. “Please remember he’s a little kid! Don’t hit him!”
Sakura glared at Shin for a moment, but found it in herself to take a deep breath and calm down.
“I’m leaving.” She announced, giving her back to everyone.
Shin sighed in relief and pulled Naruto to his feet. “You kinda asked for that, Naruto-chan…”
“Shin-nee, how can you be on her side?” Konohamaru asked, blatantly offended. “I bet she’s not even human! Did you see how big her forehead is?”
Shin stared at Konohamaru in horror and for a moment she felt her heart stop.
Are they trying to get us all killed?
Slowly Shin looked over her shoulder, praying to every god out there that Sakura hadn’t heard that. But she had. And she was staring back at them with a terrifying expression on her face.
Shin swallowed; she knew none of them were safe now. Those are the eyes of a predator.
There was a moment of silence.
And then they ran.
Driven by fear - for he had been the worst offender - Konohamaru ran quicker than any of his comrades, desperate to escape the clutches of Death.
Before he could get far, he slammed on someone. And as one the whole party stopped; even Sakura forgot her momentary rage as she stared at people in front of them.
Konohamaru had slammed on a boy that seemed to be slightly older than them. He wore all black, had purple face-paint and a strange thing tied to his back. A few steps behind him there was an older girl, with blonde hair and a huge fan strapped to her back.
Both of them had the symbol of Sunagakure on their protectors.
“Do you need something?” The strange boy asked, glaring down at Konohamaru.
Shin didn’t quite understand why he had bothered to ask, since his hand shot out to grab the front of the boy’s shirt before he had a chance to answer. However, before he could raise Konohamaru in the air, Shin grabbed the boy’s wrist tightly, keeping it still.
“Please…” Shin began with a calm voice. “Let the kid go. It was an accident.”
The older boy glared at her but she felt his muscles relax as he let go of Konohamaru.
Shin smiled. “Thank-”
Before she could blink, his other hand shot forwards and bunched up her vest in a tight fist as he pulled her to him and growled in her face.
“You’re an annoying brat.”
The girl behind him seemed unamused. “Let her go, Kankuro. Or you’ll regret it later.”
Shin grabbed the boy’s wrist with both of her hands as he raised her to her tiptoes.
“Shin-chan! Let her go, you bastard! ”
Shin could hear Naruto sprinting to help her and then she felt it. A strange shift in this stranger’s -Kankuro - chakra, as it seemed to shoot towards Naruto.
“Wait, Naruto!” Shin yelled, trying to turn her neck to look at her friend. “Calm down!”
Her words stunned the boy into stillness and she sighed in relief. However, there was that shift once again, and next thing she heard was the loud sound of Naruto falling down.
How?
“You are a Genin here? Seems like your village is full of insects.”
Shin turned her brown eyes back to Kankuro and glared. “You played your little games. Leave them be.”
Kankuro just smirked at her and raised his fist higher in the air, making her feet leave the ground entirely. Shin was holding herself not to fight back and escalate things further, but this guy was really pushing her.
“I don’t like weaklings and brats like you. So when someone starts running their mouth like that… It makes me want to break them in two.”
Shin swallowed, feeling how serious this guy was.
This is turning out to be pretty bad…
“First, I’ll take care of you. Then I’ll deal with the loud one over there.”
As if in slow-motion Shin saw Kankuro raise his fist at her and tensed her body. She really did try her best not to get into trouble with this guy, but she was not about to get punched in the face for no reason.
Before his fist could touch her Shin grabbed tightly on the inside of his wrist and rotated it in outward roughly, until the entirety of Kankuro’s arm followed the movement as to not break any bones.
“Wha-”
Then a small rock flew towards the hand that was holding her in the air. It came with enough speed to make the boy bleed, and he at last let go of her.
As soon as Shin’s feet hit the ground she jumped back so she was standing side-by-side with Naruto. Her eyes glanced to the direction the rock had come from, and she gave a grateful nod at finding Sasuke sitting on a tree-branch over there.
“You’re pretty far from home.” Sasuke spoke. “Get lost.”
Shin smiled and laid a comforting hand on a sulking Naruto’s shoulder as Sakura and Moegi started to fangirl over Sasuke.
“Thanks for running to my rescue, Naruto-chan. I really appreciate it.”
Her words seemed to embarrass Naruto further, and it didn’t help that Konohamaru was now drawing comparisons between the two boys.
“You brat, you’re the type of guy I hate the most.” Kankuro started up again, untying the… thing from his back. “Get down here.”
“Kankuro!” The girl called. “You’re not seriously going to use Karasu because of this!”
Shin sighed and raised her hands in a gesture of surrender, ready to try to keep the peace for a second time. Then she felt it-
This chakra-
Heart beating even faster Shin’s smile died as her wide eyes went back to Sasuke’s tree. But she wasn’t staring at him. There was another boy there. He had messy red hair, a ‘Love’ kanji tattooed on his forehead, and a large gourd tied to his back.
And the feel of his chakra was terrifying.
Shin’s brown eyes crossed with his sea-foam orbs and for a moment time seemed to freeze. No one had noticed that boy yet, only her.
How is this possible? Only Jonin should be this capable of hiding their presence, but this boy can’t be any older than us.
Shin opened her mouth to warn Sasuke, but the newcomer beat her to the punch.
“Kankuro, stand down. You’re an embarrassment to our village. Have you forgotten why we came here?”
His voice was cold, almost detached as he spoke but his eyes didn’t leaver hers for even a second. The boy’s gaze was becoming too intense for her, as if he was dissecting the very flesh from her bones, and Shin couldn’t help it. She averted her eyes, moving them back to Kankuro.
The newcomer’s presence visibly shook him.
“I know, Gaara. But these brats challenged us. They started it, I swear.”
“Shut up. Or I’ll kill you.”
“U-Understood. I’m sorry, I lost control here.”
Shin’s eyes widened at hearing Kankuro’s answer. He must be truly scared to lose face like this.
The boy’s unfeeling sea-foam eyes danced between Kankuro and Sasuke, before settling on Shin again. “I apologize for the problems he caused.”
Everyone around her stayed in absolute silence, so Shin took it upon herself to answer with a forced smile back on her face. “It’s okay. No harm done on our end.”
The redhead kept his gaze on her for a moment longer before dropping to the ground in a cloud of… sand?
“Let’s get going.” The redhead ordered. “We didn’t come here to play.”
As the trio turned to walk away, Sakura pushed her way to the front and ordered them to wait.
Shin was close to pulling out her hair in frustration with everyone around her. What was up with people not letting things be today? If Konohamaru hadn’t teased Naruto about Sakura in the first place, none of that would’ve happened.
“Your protectors are from Sunagakure - the Hidden Village of Sand. While both the Fire Country and the Wind Country are allies, no Shinobi can enter another village without written authorization. So please explain what you are doing here.”
The three Suna Shinobi turned to them but it was the girl who spoke.
“Are you serious? Do you live in another planet?”
Sakura was equally annoyed and confused by the blonde’s response so before things escalated again, Shin put herself in the middle of them.
“Sakura-chan, I think they must be here for the Chūnin Exams.”
“Ah, at least one of you knows their stuff, huh?” The blonde teased.
Shin turned back to the trio of foreigners, seeing the girl raise her visa.
“As you can see, we have permission. We are Genin from Sunagakure in the Wind Country, and we came here to take the Chūnin Exams.”
“Shin-chan.” Naruto called, walking until he was by her side. “I’ve never heard of the Chūnin Exams. What are they?”
“It’s the exams all Genin like us need to take to graduate to the rank of Chūnin, Naruto-chan.” Shin explained. Then she pulled Naruto closer so she could whisper in his ear. “I have some pretty exciting stuff to tell you all later, so don’t let me forget.”
Just with that Naruto was pumped. “I can’t wait, Shin-chan! I’m in it, believe it!”
Shin smiled at her friend, for a moment forgetting all about the dangerous trio in front of them.
Sasuke dropped to the ground to stand by their side. Shin was about to thank him for his help, but before she could say anything he yelled the the Suna Shinobi’s backs.
“Hey, you! Identify yourself.”
The girl was the first to turn around, staring at Sasuke with a glint in her eyes that Shin knew all-too-well.
“Me?” The blonde purred, smiling dreamly.
“No. The one with the gourd.”
Shin swallowed as the boy turned back to them, eyes fixed on Sasuke. “I’m Sabaku no Gaara. I’m also curious about you. What’s your name?”
“Uchiha Sasuke.”
Gaara nodded once and Shin thought it would finally be the end of it. But then he turned his eyes back to her.
“And you with the wavy hair. What’s your name?”
“O-Osasu Shin.” She answered, then as an afterthought, she bowed her head to the trio. “Ah, nice to meet you all. I hope we can all… get along?”
Shin could feel everyone looking at her as if she was crazy and there was no helping the blush that spread on her cheeks.
“Shin-chan…” Sakura spoke lowly from behind her. “Sometimes I worry about you. Really, I do.”
