By George, I Think She’s Got It!
Hey everyone, still deciding on zine subjects over here! But through the past couple of days I think I’ve actually hit on something.
For those of you who don’t know me personally, I was born into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, who’s members may be better known as Mormons. Now although I’m no longer an active member, it’s still something that I have a lot of love and respect for, and it will always share a place in my heart. I only ever try to reflect on my experiences in the church with positivity and am grateful for the principles and values it’s taught me. I’ve learnt service, the importance of loving your neighbour, spending and focusing your time on family, treating your body with respect, personal integrity and even how to study!
I almost forgot that religions are a type of subculture because having grown up in one, it had always been my version of normality, you know? I haven’t attended for nearly five years now, but I guess I’m still experiencing the culture through members of my family. My grandparents, a few of my aunties, cousins as well as my brother and his wife all still attend. Heck, one of my best friends just got back from serving her mission last week! I won’t share why I chose to follow a different path - I might one day, but for now all you need to know is this – you get a mix of personalities in every social group you find yourself in, but there are a lot of beautiful, kind people within this church and I truly believe they only want to share the peace, comfort and joy they find within their religion with others. So maybe the next time some missionary knocks on your door, try to remember that and treat them kindly, they’re only there with the intention of bringing you joy (not to brainwash you I promise haha!).
So reflecting on this really got me thinking - I’ve got a very unique and informed experience of this culture so wouldn’t that make for a super interesting zine?! I’ve always been one to do things differently from everybody else, and I’m pretty sure nobody in my class is going to make an LDS focused zine…I’d actually be pretty surprised if anyone in the entire history of my course had chosen to look at the Latter-Day Saints as a fashion subculture at all! But what a lot of people don’t really realise is that clothing plays a huge part in LDS culture, and is used as a way to express who they are and what they believe.
Modesty is a religious virtue, but the latest fashion trends can sometimes make living that virtue a little difficult. I know I felt immense social pressure concerning the clothes I wore, both in and out of the church, especially as a youth! I think every fourteen-year-old wants to fit in somehow – just ask yourself how you felt when you were that age?
My experience with clothes as an LDS member made me think of creating a modest fashion zine! Something to highlight and celebrate modesty within that culture. I would have LOVED to have had something like that while I was a member!
The current church media publications are great for their purpose. They inform, uplift and encourage members of the church outside of weekly meetings, but they’re not exactly very visually exciting…
It’s natural for young girls to love clothes! They are at an age where they’re experimenting with fashion and trying to discover who they are and where they fit in this big wide world, and clothing is a massive part of that. With all the magazines, social media and imagery the youth have access to daily, wouldn’t it be great for them to have something fashionable and visually exciting that also fits in line with their values? I want modest dress to seem more accessible to them. I want them to be excited about fashion, and for them to see that you can totally express your individual taste and keep your moral standards at the same time!
Wouldn’t it also be interesting to perhaps interview members who are no longer active, and see how the value of modesty has affected their lives? Ask whether their perspective has changed and maybe if their relationship with clothing has changed too?
I know when I first left the church, I dressed against the standards I’d been taught…I think it was a way of manifesting the break from that lifestyle… but what I’ve never really said is that, whenever I dress in anything revealing - even today - I feel really uncomfortable. I feel as though my body is out there for others to see and to judge and I worry that I’m unintentionally over sexualising my appearance. I have a standard hourglass figure, and one that I’m proud of and work hard enough at the gym for. But this can sometimes make dressing without showcasing my figure and femininity kind of impossible. I’m not saying I want to dress to hide those things either, but I’m very aware of how fashion and clothing sends people a certain message about yourself, and I want to always feel in control of that message. I’m not someone who ever wants to attract attention to myself or my clothes because I’m actually pretty shy, so you can see why the thought of anyone other than my boyfriend thinking of my body or my outfit in a sexual way would make me feel really awkward and uncomfortable and even a little upset! I choose only to allow my boyfriend to see me in that way, I definitely don’t choose for anybody else to.
Maybe a lot of this has to do with my upbringing, but even now as an inactive member of the church, I still choose modesty the majority of the time. Is it because that way of dressing is like a comfort blanket to me, and that it makes me feel protected and safe from the judgement of the world? I don’t know. I think I definitely have my own criteria of what modest and immodest is now, although it’s not too dissimilar from LDS standards. It might be interesting to explore this a little more…
What I worry about though, is that if I include this kind of content in the zine, then would it take away from those LDS values that I’m trying to celebrate for the youth? This isn’t a culture that I want to discriminate or pick apart - it’s too close to me. And I would never want to offend or upset anybody! So would including that perspective stray from the overall message I’m trying to convey?
Although I don’t have all the content figured out yet, I think I’ve definitely found the subject for my zine. The LDS church has members all over the world and from all different walks of life. It’s a more diverse culture than a lot of people realise, and I’d love to celebrate that diversity within the zine. Hopefully I’ll be able to find the perfect balance between keeping that moral integrity and inspiring the young women who might read it to have fun with fashion!
