For she has now been set free.

A Promise Made In Haste by @waterlilyrose

What are the key characteristics of a 'Manglik' according to Indian astrology?
In Indian astrology, particularly in Vedic astrology, the term "Manglik" refers to a person who has the planet Mars (Mangal) positioned prominently in their birth chart. The belief in Mangal Dosha or Manglik Dosha is based on the position of Mars and its perceived effects on marriage and relationships. Here are the key characteristics and beliefs associated with being a Manglik:
Position of Mars: A person is considered Manglik if Mars is placed in certain specific houses of the birth chart, namely the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house. However, the most commonly considered houses are the 1st, 4th, 7th, and 8th houses.
Effects on Marriage: Mangal Dosha is believed to bring about certain challenges and obstacles in marriage and relationships. It is said to affect marital harmony, leading to potential conflicts, disagreements, and even separations or divorces.
Temperamental Nature: Individuals with Mangal Dosha are often believed to possess a fiery and temperamental nature due to the influence of Mars. They may be seen as more aggressive, assertive, or prone to anger compared to those who do not have Mangal Dosha.
Delayed Marriage: Mangal Dosha is sometimes associated with delays or obstacles in getting married. It is believed that the presence of Mangal Dosha in a person's chart may lead to difficulties in finding a suitable partner or in getting married at the desired time.
Remedies: In traditional Indian astrology, there are various remedies prescribed to mitigate the effects of Mangal Dosha. These remedies may include performing specific rituals, wearing gemstones associated with Mars (such as red coral), chanting mantras, or marrying another Manglik individual to cancel out the Dosha.
Cultural Significance: In many parts of India, Mangal Dosha is taken seriously, and it can significantly influence matchmaking and marriage decisions. Some families may prefer to match the horoscopes of prospective partners to ensure compatibility and to assess whether Mangal Dosha is present.
Modern Interpretation: While Mangal Dosha remains significant for many individuals and families adhering to traditional astrological beliefs, its importance has been questioned and debated in modern times. Some astrologers and individuals may choose not to give much weight to Mangal Dosha, focusing instead on broader factors of compatibility and personal growth within relationships.

The Complexities and Dynamics of Arranged Marriage: A Modern Perspective
Tumblr media
Arranged marriage, a tradition deeply rooted in various cultures around the world, has long been a subject of fascination, curiosity, and sometimes even controversy. While the concept might seem archaic to some, arranged marriages continue to thrive in many societies, albeit often evolving to accommodate modern sensibilities. In this essay, we delve into the complexities and dynamics of arranged marriage, exploring its historical significance, cultural variations, societal impacts, and the evolving attitudes towards this age-old institution.
Understanding Arranged Marriage
Arranged marriage, as the name suggests, is a union orchestrated by families or intermediaries, where the individuals involved often have little to no say in choosing their life partners. Unlike love marriages, where individuals typically meet, court, and decide to marry based on mutual affection, arranged marriages are founded on familial considerations, such as social status, financial stability, cultural compatibility, and familial alliances.
Historical Context
The practice of arranged marriage can be traced back thousands of years, with its origins deeply embedded in cultural, religious, and socioeconomic norms. In many ancient civilizations, marriages were strategic alliances between families, aimed at consolidating power, acquiring wealth, or preserving lineage. The concept endured through the centuries, adapting to changing social structures and norms.
Cultural Variations
Arranged marriage manifests in diverse forms across different cultures, each with its own rituals, traditions, and expectations. In some societies, such as India, Japan, and parts of the Middle East, arranged marriages are still prevalent, with families playing a central role in matchmaking. Conversely, in Western cultures, where individual autonomy is highly valued, arranged marriages are less common, though they do exist within certain immigrant communities.
The Role of Family and Community
Central to the institution of arranged marriage is the involvement of families and sometimes entire communities in the matchmaking process. Parents, relatives, and trusted intermediaries often take on the responsibility of finding suitable matches based on criteria deemed important for marital success. This involvement underscores the collective nature of marriage, where familial interests often supersede individual desires.
Navigating Tradition and Modernity
In recent decades, the dynamics of arranged marriage have undergone significant transformations, influenced by globalization, urbanization, and changing societal norms. While traditional arranged marriages were strictly arranged by parents without the consent of the individuals involved, contemporary arrangements often involve greater agency for the prospective partners. Many modern arranged marriages incorporate elements of compatibility testing, courtship, and mutual consent, blurring the lines between arranged and love marriages.
Challenges and Controversies
Despite its prevalence and adaptation to modernity, arranged marriage is not without its challenges and controversies. Critics argue that the practice can perpetuate gender inequality, restrict individual freedom, and lead to marital dissatisfaction and even abuse. Additionally, the pressure to conform to familial expectations and cultural norms can create immense stress for those involved, particularly for individuals who do not wish to participate in arranged marriages.
Gender Dynamics
Gender dynamics play a significant role in arranged marriages, with traditional notions of masculinity and femininity often shaping marital expectations and responsibilities. In many cultures, women are expected to prioritize familial harmony and obedience over personal autonomy, while men are tasked with providing for and protecting their families. These gendered expectations can influence the power dynamics within arranged marriages and contribute to inequalities.
Shifting Perspectives
Despite its challenges, arranged marriage continues to endure, albeit in evolving forms. In some cases, arranged marriages are celebrated for fostering stability, commitment, and familial bonds. Proponents argue that the involvement of families can provide valuable support and guidance, setting the foundation for successful partnerships. Moreover, arranged marriages are often viewed as a means of preserving cultural traditions and heritage in an increasingly globalized world.
Marriage Arrangement Aamboku
Conclusion
Arranged marriage, with its rich history and cultural significance, remains a complex and multifaceted institution. While traditional practices persist in many parts of the world, arranged marriages are also evolving to accommodate modern sensibilities and individual autonomy. As societies continue to grapple with questions of tradition, modernity, and individual rights, the institution of arranged marriage will likely remain a subject of fascination, debate, and adaptation. Ultimately, whether arranged marriage is perceived as a binding tradition or an outdated practice depends on one's cultural perspective and personal experiences.

ARC REVIEW: Match Me if You Can by Swati Hegde
Tumblr media
3.5/5. Releases 6/4/24.
Vibes: Emma, heroines who gotta learn, slow burn, friends to lovers
Heat Level: 2/10
Mumbai-based Jia spends her days writing silly listicles for women's magazine Mimosa. On her off time, however, she works on her anonymous blog, giving what she thinks is very real talk... even if she's in denial about her own true feelings. She wants to get upgraded to a new column--but the only way she can is by helping her coworker find love. Thing is, Jia herself doesn't even realize that her longtime family friend Jaiman has a thing for her. Maybe... more than a thing.
Alright--if you're at all familiar with Jane Austen's Emma, I'm sure you can tell that this is an Emma retelling. I've actually been seeing a lot of Emma retellings lately; but that's not a bad thing for me, as Emma is by far my favorite Austen.
The skinny on this one is that, at least from my perspective it's very cute and well-written. It's a romcom with wit, and there's certainly a lot of chemistry between Jia and Jaiman. I love the setting (it's shockingly rare to find an English-language romcom novel that isn't set in America, and even harder to find one set in India). I enjoy the tone. It's not reinventing the wheel; it goes in the directions that a lot of Emma retellings do. For me, too... I don't mind that it was closed door, per se. However, there were moments cut off in a way that left me thinking "but why?"
The answer is that it was the author's prerogative, and that's valid. I just feel like we were kind of left in a place where there was teasing--and if there wasn't going to be anything, why tease, I suppose?
But nonetheless--if you want a light, fluffy romcom that happens to be closed door, and if you love Emma, I would recommend this.
Quick Takes:
--One way in which this book differs from Emma and that Jia and Jaiman have what I'll call a near-miss about a year prior to the novel's beginning. To me, this was really clever. First off, it swerves away from the typical Emma setup, adding a little tension that I really appreciated. Second, it makes Jia a more interestingly human character, to me. She knows there's this tension, she knows there's something between herself and Jaiman, she just doesn't want to confront it.
--Personally, I think modern Emma retellings arguably work better in a setting wherein matchmaking is still a thing. Jia is nothing if not a consummate matchmaker, and I feel like this plays so well in a book set in Mumbai, where matchmaking is a feasible career (not that it can't be in the west--but it's less common, obviously).
--Like I said: this is a slow burn. Jia and Jaiman have known each other since childhood. Feelings have been there for a long time. So while I understood, and to an extent I mean, it's there in the material... I just wanted them to kiss. I wanted something to happen. Although the book is closed door, that doesn't mean they can't get together earlier in the novel (I'm thinking of a closed door romance by Alexis Hall that I enjoyed not so long ago). It did drag a bit for me.
And ultimately, for all the theoretical tension, that lack of interaction in a romantic sense did keep it from going as far as it could have. I don't mean sexually--I mean as a love story.
That being said--if you're not sure about sex scenes, if you like a slow burn, and you want an Austen update that makes sense... This could be great for you!
Thanks to NetGalley and Dell for providing me with a copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

ARC Review of Match Me If You Can by Swati Hegde
Tumblr media
Rating: 3.75/5 Heat Level: 2/5 Publication Date: June 4th
Premise:
A modernized Emma set in India; Jia Deshpande is a rich Mumbaikar who writes for a women's magazine. She wants to start her own matchmaking column, something she can achieve if she successfully sets two coworkers up. Jia goes ahead with the plan despite warnings from her best friend Jaiman Patil, who has long harbored feelings for her.
My review:
This is a charming, effervescent take on Emma set among the upper classes of Mumbai. Jia aspires to be a matchmaker and secretly gives romantic advice on her blog in direct contrast to the content she puts out through the Cosmo-esque magazine she writes for. She's pragmatic about love while still being fairly naive, thus her mostly-unfounded confidence in her matchmaking abilities. Reading her deluded attempts at match-making office lothario Eeshan and village-transplant Charu was painfully entertaining in the best way. But like any well-written character inspired by Emma, Jia is so upbeat and (mostly) well-meaning, you can't help but root for her.
The interesting thing about this book's Mr. Knightley, Jaiman, is that he has plenty of problems of his own. He's not just Emma's paternal, perpetually-chastising friend (though to be clear, I'm not saying this is a bad thing at all); he's the owner of a struggling bar who has never quite lived up to family expectations. There's also this culinary/career rivalry he has going on with the Frank Churchill of the story (a South Indian guy named Harish who comes up with a quite frankly FABULOUS restaurant concept: Vodka & Vada). Jaiman is also Jia’s childhood friend and hopelessly in love with her. The result is a (very) slow-burn friends-to-lovers romance.
I actually really liked that Jaiman attempted an ill-fated kiss with Jia a year prior to the story beginning, and it ended with Jia crying about not wanting their relationship to change and she refuses to talk about it afterwards lolol. I thought it was a great place to start the story because Jia isn't entirely oblivious to Jaiman's feelings, and she privately admits she’s only ever felt attracted to him, so the tension is there. That being said, the author never really developed this tension or dragged it out as much as she could have. There are multiple instances where there's great set-up, like the time Jia puts on her dead mom's wedding lehenga and Jaiman walks in on her, and she asks him to unzip her. He does, but there's minimal touching or talking, and Jaiman just walks out within the next paragraph. I felt similarly about the time they dance together, as well as the entire mystery blog correspondent subplot.
The sex:
There are a couple kisses, mostly near the end, and there is one closed-door sex scene.
Overall:
Overall, this book was humorous and light and I enjoyed it, though I wished the romance had developed more. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a frothy, diverse romcom!
Thank you to Random House Publishing Group and NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Fashion and Sonam Kapoor go hand in hand. And enjoyment too. It's no secret that we enjoy Sonam Kapoor's choice of entertaining films to act in. Her films frequently have a carefree, sunny, perfect day feel. Popcorn movies at their very best.

Sonam Kapoor, Abhay Deol, Ira Dubey, Cyrus Sahukar, Amrita Puri, Anand Tiwari, Arunoday Singh, and Lisa Haydon are all part of the ensemble cast in this comedy of manners. It is a version of Jane Austen's 1815 novel Emma and is set in the upper-class society of Delhi, India. It has the same tone as the cult Hollywood movie Clueless (1995), which is also an adaptation of Austen's book. Aisha, which debuted on August 6, 2010, had a mediocre box office performance. Critics gave it mixed to favourable reviews. She characterised her persona as an intrusive diva with a penchant for playing Cupid and matchmaking.
2.Neerja
Tumblr media
The 2016 Indian biographical thriller film Neerja, which was written by Saiwyn Quadras and Sanyuktha Chawla Shaikh, was directed by Ram Madhvani. The narrative is based on a true incident: the attempted hijacking of Pan Am Flight 73 by the Abu Nidal Organization, which was supported by Libya, on September 5, 1986 in Karachi, Pakistan. The head purser of the flight, Neerja Bhanot, who stopped the hijack attempt by warning the pilots and forcing them to ground the aircraft, is portrayed in the movie. Bhanot lost his life while attempting to save the 359 survivors among the 379 passengers and crew. She played the role of the air hostess Neerja Bhanot, who perished in 1986 while attempting to save the passengers of Pan Am Flight 73, which had been hijacked.
Since the project is based on actual events, Kapoor felt a sense of responsibility towards it. As part of her role preparation, she met the Bhanot family. The movie received a lot of positive reviews, and many critics thought that Kapoor gave her best performance to date. According to Raja Sen, her performance was a career-defining moment, and Rohit Vats of the Hindustan Times observed that "she carries entirely on her shoulder." She conveys a mixture of sincere, fear, goodwill, and boldness. Rajeev Masand invited Kapoor to his yearly best actresses roundtable, and Sen named Kapoor the best actress in Hindi film of 2016. In addition to numerous other honours, Kapoor received a Special Mention for a National Film Award and a Filmfare Award for Best Actress (Critics).
3. Raanjhanaa
Tumblr media
Beloved One, also known as Raanjhanaa, is a 2013 Indian Hindi-language romantic drama film that was written and directed by Aanand L. Rai. Kapoor played the part of Varanasi-based Muslim student Zoya Haider, who becomes involved in politics as a result of the murder of her Sikh lover. Kapoor met with students, went to workshops, and practised with theatre groups affiliated with Jawaharlal Nehru University in order to get ready for her role. Additionally, she looked at Jaya Bachchan's performance in Guddi (1971), which she thought was "ideal" for the part. In response to a question about her role in the movie, Kapoor gave the following explanation of her acting style: "I have always tried to do diverse films and… I strive to be different for every character. The film was superhit at box office.
4. Delhi 6
Tumblr media
Rakesh Omprakash Mehra is the director of the 2009 drama film Delhi-6, which was made in Hindi. Abhishek Bachchan plays an NRI in the movie who travels to India with his elderly grandmother (Waheeda Rehman) and starts learning about his ancestry before becoming involved in a religious issue involving an unknown attacker who resembles a monkey. After receiving its world debuts at the Museum of Modern Art and the Dubai International Film Festival, Delhi-6 was finally released on February 20, 2009, to critical and box office acclaim. Although it did poorly financially, it earned mixed reviews from critics, who praised the soundtrack and the cast's performances while criticising the plot, writing, and pacing. Best Production Design went to Delhi-6 at the 57th National Film Awards (Samir Chanda).
5. Veere Di Wedding
Tumblr media
Female buddy comedy Veere Di Wedding is a 2018 Hindi-language movie that was produced by Rhea Kapoor, Ekta Kapoor, and Nikhil Dwivedi and directed by Shashanka Ghosh. Starring Kareena Kapoor Khan, Sonam K. Ahuja, Swara Bhaskar, and Shikha Talsania as four friends attending a wedding, the movie is loosely based on the 2015 movie The Wedding Ringer. On June 1, 2018, Veere Di Wedding was released in theatres to mixed reviews. The movie, which had a budget of $28,000,000, ended up earning over 139,000,000 globally, making it the highest-grossing Hindi film of the year and the biggest for a movie with female leads. At the 64th Filmfare Awards, it garnered three nominations, including Best Supporting Actress for Talsania and Bhaskar.

CHELSEA VOLTURI  /  CHAARANI ; biography
Tumblr media
Chelsea ( then known as Chaarani ) was born in the modern day Madhya Pradesh state of India, then a part of the Avanti kingdom of the Ancient Indian Empire, in 436 BCE. She grew up in comfortable surroundings with loving parents, four younger sisters and a warm extended family. Like other girls of her age, Chaarani was educated, taught to read and write and study the Vedic texts, and encouraged to develop her musical skills in dancing and singing.
She was playful by nature, and took an extremely active role in the matchmaking of her younger sisters ( as well as playing off acquaintances and enemies against each other and watching the fireworks of her meddling ), and ended up being the last to marry. At the age of 21, she chose her groom: an enigmatic young man called Nayan. The pair wed and began their married life together; three years passed and, while it seemed that the pair would not be blessed to bear children of their own, their simple life in their small village on the outskirts of the city was enough for them.
While picking flowers in the forest late one winter evening, Chaarani was subject to a freak attack by a creature that she would later come to recognise as ₲oëjℓ𐌌m, or the Sire: the first vampire. Chaarani returned, weakened, to her home and husband, where her condition deteriorated over several days of fever. Nayan worried over and tended to her through her sickness but, when Chaarani recovered, she had a newfound power and thirst that she struggles to control. This led to violent outbursts against other villagers; initially, the townsfolk did not suspect her of the murders, but suspicions grew — chiefly from her own husband. Unable to control her unique gift, the ability to manipulate the relationships and loyalties of those around her, Chaarani intensified the anger towards her.
The village elders would whisper of the Rashasa, a demon in Hindu mythology who can shapeshift, haunt cemeteries and feed on the flesh of men. Navan was ultimately convinced that his wife had been killed and replaced by one of these terrible creatures, and a mob rose up within the village to destroy the beast.
Chaarani had no choice but to flee her home village. Knowing that rumours would follow her from town to town until she was dead, she sought to leave India completely. She crossed into the nearby Persian Empire, before her yearning for her sire drew her along the Persian Royal Road into Greece. There, she encountered her creator for the first time: she gained some answers and clarity on her new night-dwelling state of being and, when the Sire opted to move on from Greece, Chaarani decided to stay in the city of Athens.
As an immigrant to the city, she held little social or political power. She therefore took up a position as a courtesan ( or hetaira ) to the Greek elite. She used her natural wiles, as well as her ability to foster loyalty in others, to rise through the ranks of Grecian society and marry one of her lovers. She wed, moved into his estate and then fed on her husband, before staging his death as an unfortunate accident. Widows did not typically have the liberty of owning property in Athens, but Chaarani — who by now had changed her name to Carmilla — ensured that little scrutiny was brought on her affairs, or her quirks of being a recluse during the day.
Whilst living as one of the wealthiest widows in Athens, Carmilla took a liking to a young woman newly wed, Lyra. She became Carmilla's companion, spending time at her estate while her husband was away at the ekklesia politicking. The two became sexually involved, with Carmilla feeding on her companion and slowly draining her of health in the process.
Lyra's closeness to Carmilla and ramifications that it could have for her husband's reputation began to raise eyebrows within the city — and also drew the attention of Aro Volturi, the leader of the newly formed Volturi coven of vampires. As a mob grew to oust her from her position and cast her out from the city, led by a husband and father who cared deeply for Lyra, Carmilla finally learned the limits of her power: it would not work on strong bonds of blood, or of those monogamously mated.
Knowing that Carmilla's recklessness could expose the vampire community in Athens to the ruling elite, as well as coveting her powers of relationship manipulation ( particularly after his sister, Didyme and Marcus, were beginning to express their wishes to leave the coven ). Aro offered Carmilla a position within his Volturi guard, allowing her to slip away from the baying mob who would, in a matter of days, storm her home and force her to move on yet again from a life she had built.
Carmilla had little choice but to accept Aro's offer. Another name change followed, this time to take on the Volturi name, and shed the moniker that was causing such a stir in Athenian society. She became Charmion Volturi, and her first order of business was to bind Marcus to the Volturi, after Aro had murdered his own sister, Didyme, to deter him from leaving.
But there was one stipulation that she made to Aro in exchange for joining him. In the chaos of the impending attack on her home, Lyra had begged with Charmion to come with her. Realising just how moulded she had been by Lyra's compassion and softness, she agreed to turn her companion and insisted to Aro that he accept them both. Lyra's unique ability was not at all useful to the Volturi, the gift of invisibility, and so she did not become a Volturi guard like Charmion, but she was installed into the Volturi headquarters and there she mostly remained for centuries to come. Like her companion, she changed her name to Afton, and her reclusiveness even from other members of the Volturi made her something of an urban myth within the walls of the organisation.
Over the years, Charmion became an integral part of the Volturi as they relocated to the town of Volterra, in Italy. She remained a free spirit at heart, doing as Aro asked but only in return for a degree of freedom that the other Volturi were not granted, and lavish and expensive gifts over the centuries. She was also permitted the opportunity to learn the classics and read texts that would otherwise have been forbidden as a woman in society for hundreds of years. She studied medicine, science, the arts and history and became adept at all of it, and Aro hoped that disciplined study would curb some of her more reckless and hedonistic impulses. Charmion, who later changed her name to Chelsea to reflect the changing times, enjoyed learning, but enjoyed hunting and pleasure and thrill-seeking too.
Whenever she was not instructed to strengthen the loyalty of the Volturi's members to Aro, or to ease the hostilities of those vampires he had procured and stolen from other covens to covet their gifts, Chelsea was a key instrument to the Volturi's dominance in the vampire world. When faced with a more powerful coven or, as time wore on, a coven who could pose a threat, Chelsea was sent in to destabilise the leaders' loyalties and make it easier for Aro to strike.
But for all the hedonism and gifts and liberty to live and hunt and fuck as she pleased, Chelsea did not have true freedom. She may have had more free will than other Volturi members, but she could only provoke Aro's ire so far. Coupled with his ability to read her thoughts and memories with a single touch, she had to be careful not to betray any wavering of her loyalty — even though exposure to other covens and human life outside of Volterra did nothing but broaden her mind and desires.

This app is designed for a younger audience, focusing on creating a safe and authentic environment for users. With features like trust scores and verified profiles, TrulyMadly stands out as a modern choice for those looking to find love.
Key Features to Look For
When choosing the best matrimony app in India for your needs, consider the following features:
User Verification: A good app should have measures in place to verify user identities, ensuring genuine profiles.
Search Filters: Advanced filters help you narrow down your search based on preferences like age, religion, location, and interests.
Privacy and Security: Ensure the app takes privacy seriously, offering features that allow you to control who sees your profile.
Communication Tools: Look for apps that provide chat or messaging features, enabling you to connect with potential matches before meeting in person.
The Importance of Trust and Safety
Safety is paramount when using matrimonial apps. Always opt for platforms that prioritize user security, such as verifying profiles and offering reporting tools for inappropriate behavior. Make sure to read reviews and testimonials to gauge other users' experiences, ensuring you choose a trustworthy service.
Mobile App Cost Calculator
For those interested in developing their own matrimonial app, understanding the mobile app cost calculator can be essential. Factors like design complexity, platform choice (iOS or Android), and feature set all contribute to the overall cost. A robust app with advanced functionalities will likely have a higher development cost, but it can also provide a better user experience and attract more users.
Why You Should Consider Using Matrimonial Apps
The convenience offered by matrimonial apps is unmatched. They save time and broaden your horizons by connecting you with potential partners you might not meet in everyday life. Furthermore, the ability to communicate and interact with matches before meeting face-to-face can lead to more meaningful connections.
If you're still hesitant about diving into the world of online matchmaking, consider booking an appointment with a professional matchmaker. This personalized approach can provide additional insights and assistance tailored to your specific needs, ensuring you have a support system while navigating this journey.
Conclusion: Embracing Modern Love
In conclusion, the world of matrimony in India is rapidly transforming, and matrimonial apps play a crucial role in this evolution. By choosing the best matrimony app in India that aligns with your values and preferences, you increase your chances of finding a compatible partner. As the trend of wedding app development continues to grow, expect even more innovative features that will enhance the matchmaking process, making it easier and more enjoyable to find your soulmate.
