Something in the Air

I need to get out of this town. 

The world ended so suddenly. Or, at least what we used to call the world. None of us could have expected it to happen. I remember, the day before I was at my nephew's fifth birthday. It was themed after some children's cartoons with color coded zebras. My parents had shown up late and I had work early the next morning, so I barely got to see them. I didn’t even get to hug my dad goodbye. They’re all gone now. 

Some extra dimensional creatures slipped into ours through a hole just outside of our atmosphere that night. At least that's what the scientists on the TVs said. They’re probably not alive anymore either. News and propaganda spread fast. Creatures that consume humans. Only moving in darkness. The religious dubbed them demons. Some streamer apparently tried to exercise one. Mods had probably been taken by that point because what immediately followed was 5 minutes of the poor guy getting ripped to shreds through an infrared lens, and then 40 minutes of the sounds of flesh tearing and bones crunching as the creature slowly ate him.

I don’t know how I survived this long. One incidental happenstance after another that kept me in places with enough light to last until sunrise. And that continued for what I'm pretty sure was about 2 weeks, though it felt like months until I came across this town. 

Situated across a small stone bridge from the main road was this 12 block by 7 block town. Only one way in, only one way out, with a large blood stained barely legible welcome sign that read “Welc- -shine”. The perimeter of this small island seemed to have been recently boarded up with large flood lights to shine light around. With the bridge boasting various forms of string light, solar charged path lights, and every few feet a large flood light on either side, all dark in the sunlight as I approached. The towns folk were nice and welcoming enough, they’d all lost loved ones and understood the value of “community”. 

Apparently the old residents of this town, who now only 6 of still remained, tried valiantly to fend off the shadows, and for the most part did well for themselves. The small man made island was well equipped with both diesel and solar powered generators, as well as their own gray water and reverse osmosis systems, all incase of natural disaster causing their inability to leave. So they have been able to support themselves as well as keep the majority of the town, and especially the perimeter well light in the darkness. 

My time here has actually been pretty easy going. If you don’t think about it all too hard it's almost like nothing has changed. We take shifts during the light hours to scavenge the neighboring cities of food and supplies, batteries being our biggest necessity. We’ve got a large hefty community garden that was started when we found one of the old ladies who used to live here was an heirloom seed collector. We threw a party that day. Some of the more mechanically inclined took it upon themselves to learn how to make a simple desalination plant to supplement the RO water. They also do repairs on the generators as needed. We fish, we play cards, we sing and dance and some of us even tried to find love again. We get new occupants every now and then. We also lose some of them during scouting parties. All in all it could have been worse. 

It’s been about 2 years since then. Food is more scarce and a bad storm took out a large portion of our crops, but we are rebuilding.  Although the scouting parties are always able to find good portions of meat lately. They say animals have been breeding a lot more abundantly. I know they are lying. 

I need to get out of this town. Because there is a scent in the air. And it smells delicious.

in my au, soundwave’s leader of company helex later operating into tesarus for more land advantage (moving the remaining autobots on earth to tesarus, meanwhile other cities still occupied by functionalists; later invaded by decepticon and autobot forces) but that side of cybertron is split and the rust sea began sinking a majority of land (putting in the simanzi massacre and forced flood into the story) so soundwave is equipped with off-road gear and heavy modifications to survive the weather. he’s build for rain and natural disasters as well as portable communications since his location has dead connections cuz of the land damage, allowing private comms/news outputs via his psychic ability and kickass radio station (plays classic rock on sundays)

Welcome to MDM

MDM is short for Monday Dusk Monolith, which is the (cancelled) FNF mod that this au is based off of. (Warning for body horror; including extra eyes/eyes where they don't belong/things in place of eyes, and spiders.) Or, well, originally based off of. Collaborating with friends, we've taken a lot of creative liberties and gone off in our own direction. The two of us have a focus on the main human(ish) characters, and as a group we've added plenty of mod and other outside characters to the roster, along with incorporating lore tied to things like Pico's School and Spooky Month.

Due to not owning every character, we can't definitively answer every question, but this will hopefully give a good jumping off point for the things we can answer. Plus we can always ask our other friends for clarification.

Before we dive too deep, let's establish some of the characters:

Adam, aka Boyfriend Hatsune, (he/him) is a head empty, bi disaster of a man. He has the ability to go back in time whenever he dies or loses a rap battle, allowing him to try over again and do better next time. He is borrowing this power. He left his parents and sister behind in Japan, and his brother is currently MIA.

Lilith, aka Girlfriend Dearest, (she/her) has half a braincell, though most of it goes towards her interest in science. She gained her love of science from her dad, who she now sometimes offers help in searching for a cure for the infection that's taken over. Her and her dad try to keep close enough contact in this wasteland, but her mom is MIA.

Cain, aka Pico Newgrounds, (he/him) is tired of being the main braincell holder of this trio. He's not quite sure how the other two survived long enough to find him again, let alone survived curing him. Basically adopted by an army (literally) and forcefully adopted a member of an opposing faction as a cousin/sibling figure.

While the main plot of this mod, and the inciting incident we've been playing around after, is still the monolith landing in the city, there's some backstory we should give an overview of first.

Back in the day, in the fictional city of Newgrounds, Pennsylvania, (no, this is not a coincidence) Adam (Boyfriend) and Cain (Pico) went to the same high school. While there, the two of them were dating and often hung out with Val (short for Valentine, aka Nene) and Moses (Darnell). Around this time, the other three loved to tease Adam about a friend who "you wouldn't know her, she goes to another school." None of them realize that he really did know Lilith (Girlfriend) back then, having traded names with her at one point while the pair of them were transitioning.

One year, Adam's parents got a job offer in Japan, and moved across the sea with his younger sister Lydia (Miku). Given that Adam was in high school and thus close to finishing schooling, they decided to let him stay with his young adult older brother, Abel (Michael), to finish it out.

Unfortunately, Abel ended up in an altercation while trying to protect Lilith during a hangout with her and Adam. In keeping with the Big Bro mod that Michael originates from, Daddy Dearest quite literally saves his life.

This is not the only gun related incident Adam would be unlucky enough to get caught up in. Within weeks of the event with his brother, the shooting from Pico's School took place. While Cain saved the day as Adam barely survived, Adam's parents were naturally worried about their son staying in America after both gun violence incidents. He was given only a few weeks to pack his things in preparation for leaving, and nobody was quite okay in this situation. As a parting gift, he was given his now iconic hat.

Without Adam for emotional support or a positive influence in the wake of the shooting, the remaining three friends turned into mutual bad influences. With Cain getting scouted by Assassin Corp, the trio slowly turned to a life of crime together. While the trio all turned to contract killing, they aren't afraid to turn to other illicit activities on the side.

It was somewhere around this time when the events of various Pico related things took place; such as Pico vs Überkids, Pico vs Bear as alluded to with the mention of Assassin Corp, and the Pico's Cousin games.

Adam lived in Japan with his family until a few months before the monolith arrived, when he finally moved back stateside at the age of 19. It'd been 5 years since he'd been made to leave, and, having lost contact with all the friends he'd left behind, he had no idea where any of them were. He did manage to reconnect with Lilith, and the two of them ended up dating.

That leads us into the events of the mod: The monolith falling and causing the infection; discovering music is the cure through it stopping Lilith in her attack against Adam; using that to save Daddy Dearest; an adventure to meet two strange children, their spider mom, and a weird creature in a lemon costume; and stumbling across an infected Cain, who very much wanted Lilith dead.

And then off we are into even more original content for this au which includes meeting a bomb man, a cloud man, and stumbling across Pico's family which led to the discovery that Cain has the ability to respawn, just to name a few.

I LOVE. love, LOVEEEE the modded video with them as gods right? but I'm gonna pivet and actually talk about the we survived natural disasters video becaus I think this one is the least talked abt scu vid and IT JUST. it shows them as mortals... it shows them survivjng jschlatt this seemingly just god... and it shows how grizzly and condi and charlie got powers in this video!!! this is such a cool video to me bc also it shows the threes dynamic and how scary scu schlatt is power wise that he just does WHATEVER HE WANTS. also the infamous poppy line gah gah gah. takes damage. I think its Soo underrated scu talking wise bc it shows literally when they got powers and also show the mortal side :3 and I think gives more context for scu schlatt and also that he is a FREAK ☝️‼️

Last October we had 💜🤍Espilver Week 2023🤍💜, and we set up some polls to ask Espilver fans about their favorite everything for this ship✨

"Where would be the best place for their date?"

Over one-third of people chose Countryside 🏞 (Staying at home 🏡 was a close second!). A lot of people would agree that they are, especially Silver, fascinated by the beauty of nature. That being said, let's see why is that!✨

Everything about the lush & peaceful world

Silver (06) was hailed from a ruined future where the sun couldn't reach and plant-life being scarce. Seeing lush green and breathing refreshing air for once would be such an amazing experience. Even the dry desert couldn't stop him from awing at the peace and beauty the world provides! (Nearly 20% of voters also wanted Silver & Espio to go to the beach for a date!) The countryside definitely provides plenty chances of getting amazed and generally have a good time together!✨

Mod thinks, whether Silver's future is good or not (Sonic 06/Sonic Channel profile/etc. states Silver came from a ruined future, while Sonic Colors/TSR/etc. hinted that Silver's future is good), his love for the world would not falter. Silver values perseverance, and he wants to keep not only the plants, but the people, and things they value and love, safe, in a world with no disasters. Born during an apocalypse, Silver possibly only heard of the good times from others, having regular meals, hanging out for fun outside, breathing clean air, seeing a clear blue sky... Silver himself might not understand it himself, but his innate sympathy for the people extends to the things they had hoped to see again. He wanted to see the bright world because the people wanted to. He wished the world haven't lost everything to the flames, haven't reduced to ashes. Even if it was impossible to reverse time, and he had accepted reality and adapted pragmatic survival, he'd still hold on to this "fantasy" of an absolution for this world. And if he truly have a chance to save the world, he'd surely take it, press on no matter how much it might make, and finally bring hope to the people that yearned for life itself. Each stem grown from the soil represents brilliant life that shimmers with hope. Now Silver sees them all over the mountains and plains. It must be a dazzling view.

Camping usually takes place in the wild, after all

Classic Espio's bio told us 好きなもの：キャンプ (Likes: Camping), and usually people camp in the wilderness... That's... to be honest, a very simple reason to explain his love for nature. Arguably, camping can be "camping with a tent in a nature park for fun", or "camping in a well hidden place to catch you committing crimes in 4K". The reason why Espio likes camping has never been stated and it was all up to fans to interpret as they would.

If we do not count classic era and instead look into the current one, Espio being able to do Leaf Swirl would be as convincing as Vector knowing how to cook. Little indicates whether or not Espio adored nature very much besides the fact that leaves came from trees. Maybe it's only a medium to animate the strong gust of wind Espio could create.

Still, it just doesn't seem right to say Espio doesn't like going to the countryside. Camping as an activity is too afflicted with the purpose of getting closer with the nature, you must've liked the wilderness enough to say camping is your favorite activity. Same with Leaf Swirl, not flashy with light streaks, but unnoticeable yet fascinating like a leaf getting carried by a swift wind. Blends in with nature as if he has always been a part of it. So, it wouldn't be fair to disregard it as simply an effect for his moveset.

The nature seen at a countryside is not only trees and grasses, but the atmosphere it carries as well. Mod thinks, they both like the wilderness with different reasons. Silver loves it because it represents a peaceful world for him, while Espio enjoys it for its absense of needless noise and matters, as well as harmony for his spirit. No matter what it is, both of them can be themselves best when hanging out in a place they resonate with.

It is really nice to know people prefer the countryside as the place to go as well! It really suits them because they can talk their hearts out through their same interest.

Of course, there can be many more reasons of why from other Espilver shippers, and mod would love to see everyone's take on how their dates would be like! ✨

Life for outlaws is starting to become increasingly difficult with encroaching civilization along with the appearance of more law officials and bounty hunters. Yet, life for regular civilians isn't easy either. If it isn't the struggles of running your own homestead or having to watch out for the outlaws that still remain, it's plague and natural disasters making certain towns particularly uninhabitable. 

Still, there is a life that can be carved from all of that, and many people are just trying to survive.

The alternate universe aspect: 

This takes place three years before the events of Red Dead Redemption II with the primary locations being within New Austin.

The timeline is not completely locked down, which allows characters who haven't appeared or joined their gangs yet to still be playable in the timeline and can be introduced earlier than canon.

Original characters are valued and encouraged, and headcanon-based or canon-divergent canon portrayals are more than welcome too.

The plot is largely shaped by character interactions and plotting, so canon may end up changed but it is not assured.

M.E.D.S. (Medical & Emergency Division of Scientists) -Led by Sci -This division is widely centered on medical science, keeping the hospital open day and night in case of emergency. However, they also look into engineering projects to improve quality of life, botany to research what plans are and are not edible, and similar projects

D.N.A.A.C. (Division of Nutrition, Agriculture, & Animal Care) -this division is in charge of supplying the survivors with food. Due to the hostile nature of the monoverse's weather, this division often collaborates with M.E.D.S to keep the crops alive

C.E.D. (Caretaking & Education Division) -this division is in charge of caring for children, especially those who have been orphaned by The Great Devastation. Along with the standard school curriculum, new courses on survival, edible plants, and what to do in case of a natural disaster have been added and expanded upon

F.C.P.A. (Force for Cooperative & Protective Action) -Led by Blue -this division functions similarly to the royal guard, working to keep all of the surviving humans and monsters safe. Blue does his best to keep scope on the entire populace, but there are some things he can't stop from slipping under his radar

D.S.S.H. (Division for Sanitation, Sterilization, & Habitability) -this division is in charge of making sure none of the surviving humans or monsters get sick from unsafe environments. This includes cleaning out unused buildings, disease control, and containment of contaminated areas

D.C.R. (Division for Construction & Rebuilding) -Led By Nightmare -this division is in charge of repurposing the broken buildings present in the monoverse to be safe and stable. While the vast majority of these are converted into homes, school spaces, or other such utilities, some are too dangerous and have to be knocked down entirely
