#honestly the approach in this guide is probably a better entry-level way of IDing species than memorizing specific characteristics#you get used to looking at the whole plant and recognizing it the way you would a face#like when i go 'oh a mockingbird' and my friend is like 'wow how could you tell?? i barely even saw it'#i didnt count its tail feathers lol. im lucky if i saw its white spots.#mockingbirds are really common here and for something of that size (sparrow < x < grackle) mockingbird is definitely the most likely suspec#and then add in that it's light-ish colored and has a long tail and you can be reasonably certain#but like 80% of it is knowing what youre most likely to see at a certain place and time#and using very broad features to narrow down that list
