Janus buried himself further in his nest of soft weighted blankets, shivering despite how warm he should be. After an hour and a half of futile attempts to feel warm, he reluctantly emerged from his blanket fortress and sat up, shivering. He hugged himself and rubbed his arms trying in vain to warm himself.
He could go to his boyfriend, Patton, but he was almost against it. He could handle a little cold, right? No, no he couldn't, despite how much he tried telling himself he could. He sighed and stood, leaving his room and heading down the hall to Patton's room.
Standing outside Patton's door, Janus hesitated before tentatively knocking, hoping not to disturb Patton's rest. After a few moments and some shuffling behind the door, it opened, revealing Patton looking adorable yet tired in his gray cat onesie. “Oh, hey pumpkin, did you need something?” Patton smiled warmly, stepping aside in case his partner wanted to come inside his room. Janus smiled back tiredly at Patton, taking the offer and walking in.
“Yes, I need my space heater of a boyfriend” He walked over to the bed and sat on the edge of it, the springs creaking under his weight. Patton giggled as he shut the door “Is it too cold?” he asked as he sat next to Janus, who nodded. “Way too cold.” “Well good thing you have me!” Patton smiled and wrapped his arms around Janus, pulling the both of them down so they were laying in bed.
Patton took a moment to pull his incredibly soft blankets on top of them, before looking at Janus “Do you wanna spoon or lay on top of me or just hug?” He held Janus’ hand momentarily while the freezing side thought. “Spoon, please.” He decided, turning over so his back was facing Patton, soon smiling at feeling strong arms wrap around his waist and pull him close.
“Alrighty!” Patton giggled, squeezing Janus briefly, who let out a pleased sigh. “This is much better…” He closed his eyes, finally relaxing as he warmed up. “Wonderful.” Morality smiled softly, lifting a hand to gently play with Janus’ hair. “Baby?” “Hm..?” “I’m happy you came to me when you needed me.” Janus smiled softly, taking Pattons other hand and bringing it to his lips, pressing a gentle kiss to his knuckles. “Me too, sunshine…”

Space Heater
Fandom: Sander Sides Pairing: Moceit (Janus/Patton) Tags: Fluff, Cuddling, Cold-blooded Janus, Ficlet Summary: Janus can't fall asleep one night due to being freezing from being cold-blooded, and decides to go to his boyfriend Patton for some warm snuggles

The cuddle anon has returned for the depression cave for a brief moment to present to you— Raeda but make it moceit! I know first instinct says give Janus the curse seeing as he’s half snake but while personality wise, Janus would be more of an Eda and Pat would be more of a Raine, story wise I’d give Patton the curse and Janus would be the double agent. Patton has trouble trusting people and Janus is good at deception. It’s literally his number one thing. Janus still breaks up with Patton due to communication issues. Janus leads a rebellion made of the dark sides. Remus is obviously Amber. They are both still obviously in love. They get back together in the end and nothing bad happens the end! I accept nothing else for Raeda so I shall do the same for them. Okay, bye!!!!! See you in a few months when the brainrot hits me again.

Okay I've definitely imagined Moceit Raeda AUs before so I'm all for this! Yes please gib!

okay okay! first i wanted to say i love your art! it's so unique and cool!! also super soft when you do moceit and analogical 🥺🩵💛 💜💙 i think those are the characters i find perfect in your style, logan is just 💙✨ (/gen)
so! on the topic of moceit and analogical, maybe some headcanons you have for both pairings? :3 🩵💛 💜💙
Thank you, that's so sweet of you to say! I love every tag you leave on my art, and the whole system is glad you enjoy our work!
Moceit:
Patton has trouble with seeing the other sides as equals, tending to view himself as an authority figure. Not only was Janus the first to challenge this, he was the first to become an equal. Janus challenges a lot of Patton's preconceived ideals and it's good for him - Patton has been living by the morals of a child while also putting himself in a role of power over the others. Janus is needed in order to break apart that dynamic.
Janus and Patton really both love hanging out in the outdoors, and just being around each other and chatting quietly is their favourite way to spend time. Very old married men behaviour.
Janus isn't much of a cuddly person, but Patton very much is. Janus is willing to concede to bedtime cuddles and maybe 5 hugs a day, but no more, no less.
Janus rarely talks about himself and his emotions, he's not fond of the vulnerability that comes with sharing facts about yourself. However, Patton tells Janus everything about himself. To the point that Janus knows about his cold shoulders, even though Patton didn't even know why Janus likes Halloween best.
Patton crochets so many warm clothes for Janus to use during winter to keep him from getting all slow and foggy brained. Janus can become nearly catatonic if he gets extremely cold, and Patton tries to help him stay warm as possible to prevent it.
Analogical:
I LOVE queer romantic analogical!! They care for each other so greatly, even if it couldn't necessarily be defined as a 'relationship', and neither of them want a relationship anyways. (aroace kings)
Logan writes fanfic and Virgil lays against his back on the bed and just hangs out with him. He calls it "nerd stories" but he loves editing for him and proofreading his work (and he loves the opportunity to spend time with Logan and engage his interests and passions in general).
Logan really enjoys letting Virgil show him his music! He enjoys breaking down the beats and melodies logically and the excitement of discovering new things. Logan is an emo and goth music fan by proxy.
Both of them are a bit touch averse and not incredibly physically affectionate, so cuddling or even hugging is rare between them. They much prefer to parallel play beside each other, doing their own thing yet enjoying each other's company.
Virgil truly understands Logan's current struggle, being disregarded and pushed aside, having your opinions discredited and ignored. That's why he never gets mad at Logan for snapping or jumping to conclusions that people hate him. After all, Logan was the one that taught him about cognitive distortions. Virgil is pretty much the only person Logan will accept comfort from at this point.
That's all that is on my mind for now, I love both of these ships so deeply <3

What’s Your Favorite Scary Movie?
Prompt: purposely suggesting a horror movie (even though they know they themselves hate horror movies) just so they have an excuse to cuddle up for the night. (Credit to @/novelbear for the idea from their spooky prompts list which you can find here<3)
Summary: Patton has been feeling a little touch deprived lately, so he suggests that he and Janus watch one of Janus’ favorite horror movies just so they can cuddle. (even though he hates horror.)
Ship: romantic moceit
CW/TW: none, just fluff<3
———————————————————————
The room was dimly lit, a yellow tint coming from the kitchen made the living room cozier than ever. Janus loved it, it was the perfect place to read whenever he could.
Janus looks up from his book and his place on the couch to see his boyfriend staring at him. “What is it, Darling?” He says, amused.
Pattons face heats up at the petname. “I was gonna go to bed but it feels empty without you. Do you…do you wanna watch a scary movie?”
Janus smiles, “of course, I would love that. I do, however, find it odd that you’re asking considering you hate horror movies” he says.
“Well, I mean, it’s almost Halloween so I thought, y’know..why not give it a shot?” Patton responded
Janus’ smile grew. “What movie were you thinking of?”
Patton shrugged, “nothing in particular, whatever you want, babe”
Janus placed his book facedown on the couch and followed Patton Into their bedroom. it smelled of burning firewood, a scent both he and Patton loved; the candle lit the room with a soft glow.
In bed, Janus clicked through a multitude of streaming services, surveying their options for movies before finally settling on Netflix, which had all of the Scream movies. All the while Patton snuggled up against him, his body pressed against his back, and an arm wrapped around him.
“You’re sure you wanna watch this, Pat?” Janus asked calmly.
With his head buried in Janus’ neck, he nodded.
Janus clicked play and the movie begun.
Patton felt safe next to his beloved, usually he didn’t want to watch anything that involved fear in the mix but he knew that Janus would do anything and everything to make him feel better.
He jumped occasionally, which Janus responded to with a soothing hand running through his hair, letting him know he would be there through the whole thing, reminding him every so often that they could turn the movie off at any point, he wouldn’t be upset; but Patton insisted they keep watching.
Janus payed attention to his boyfriends body language, noticed when it tensed up at a particular scene, when he breathed a sigh of relief against his neck whenever the worst parts were over, the cool air making him melt a little against him.
After a while he felt Pattons arm loosen around him, soft snoring filling the room apart from the screams on the TV. He smiled and turned to face him, placing a kiss on his forehead, glad he could provide a comforting enough presence that he felt safe enough to fall asleep.
He turned off the TV, blew out the candle on their nightstand, letting darkness engulf the room, and listened for any sounds of fear coming from Patton. When none came, he fell asleep peacefully next to him.

My Writing Masterpost
Updated as of 9/12/2024
To check if there are any newer fics since this has been updated, look for the tag #my fic
You can also read many of these on AO3
My Multi-chapter Fics:
We Could Try? 1, 2, 3,
Patton had found out. He’d found out not only that Virgil was ticklish, and not only that he actually liked it, but also that he’d never had a real tickle session.
Sequels: I do not understand, The Price of Cookies
Grumpy, Sorry
Virgil is grumpy and gets tickled by Patton, and tickles him back a bit. Later, Patton gets him back even more.
Tickle Week: Sunday, the idea, Monday, Dee and Logan, Tuesday, Patton and Roman, Wednesday, Roman and Virgil,
“Well, seeing as there are six of us, I propose a tickle week. We’ll leave Sunday off, but every other day we’ll put names in a hat and draw one, and whoever’s name is drawn becomes a tickle toy for the whole day.”
The Tickle House:
Virgil’s New Job,
At the End of a Bad Day
Scribbling
There’s a place called the tickle house, where you can pay to tickle or be tickled. Virgil and Janus work there, and the others often visit.
Tickletober 2020:
One: Unusual Spot
Two: Feathers
Three: Stocks
Four: Scribbling
Five: Drawn on
Six: Kiss
Seven: Unusual Tool
Eight: Interrogation
Nine: Ganged Up On
Twenty-Three: Asking For It
My One-shots:
Roman’s Idea is Best
Written with @barelyticklishlee: Roman has a fantastic idea for Thomas’s date. Virgil doesn’t agree, at least at first.
When Patton gets into a Ler mood at the same time as Virgil is in a Lee Mood.
Pretty self-explanatory
A bit of something soft
Patton’s having a hard day, so Virgil cuddles and tickles him
Cheating at Games is Ill-Advised
Virgil cheats at a tickling game with Logan, and gets very tickled.
Pay Attention
Virgil can’t pay attention to the conversation with Roman and Patton tickling him.
Beware of Running Away from Lers
Virgil tries to run away from Roman
Arms Up
Virgil tickles Roman’s armpits
Belly
Patton feels fat, but Roman still loves him just as much, and wants him to feel so much better.
When Patton has a Hard Day
Patton is feeling down, but tickling Virgil might help him feel better~
Unnamed Fic
Logan gets soft back tickles from Roman.
The Sweetest Lee
Tickling a sweet little lee is just the best thing ever~
It feels better when you just let it happen ;)
Cuddly tickles for Roman.
Remus Catches a Lee
Virgil's been caught in a trap and gets tickled to pieces.
Virgil’s Voice
Virgil wants tickles, but can't voice his requests, so Roman helps him out, getting him all the tickles he wants.
Dwindling Creativity
Roman shrinks down as Thomas's creativity is used up. Janus helps to distract him from his work.
Sacrifice
Patton is gonna tickle someone. If not a sacrifice, then everyone~
Requests:
Roman wants to join
Lee Roman
14 and 25 with Lee Deceit and Let Patton please?
No regrets, with Roman and Remus maybe?
oh requests?? hmm maybe either 22 or 25 w lee virgil and any ler you like?
14 with LerRoman and LeeLogan???
w/ pat ro and lo testing which of virgil's spots is the worst
Tell that to the tickle monster: Ler Patton and Lee Virgil.
16 Any pairing u think fits!!!!
I know something sweeter than cookies: same pairing, Ler Patton and Lee Virgil.
maybe 29 with ler!patton and lee!logan?
4 with Lee Roman and Ler Deceit?
11 with Ler Logan and Lee Roman please
22 with Lee Logan and Let Remus please?
19 Lee Deceit and Ler Virgil and Remus please?
Do you think you could do 3 with a lee Deceit?
9, with Roceit? :3
16 and 7 with Lee Deceit and Ler Patton please
Shy Lee Janus being forced to ask for tickles from Ler Logan?
Logan noticing Virgil having a bad day and and just having him lay down and giving him a pillow to giggle and blush into while he traces Virgil's back with his fingers or fluffy brushes to help him relax❤
Moceit cheer up tickles? 😃 (Lee Patton and Ler Janus, if you would)
oh prompts! maybe lee Patton ler roman with some sort of challenge? (Don't move, laugh, smile, whatever)
What about a lee!Virgil? (ler!your choice. Preferably a twin.) Someone comes in to wake him up from a nap, or something, with pokes. Virgil is still half asleep at this point, so he has no filter.
Lee Roman denying his in a Lee mood but Janus is behind him smirking because he knows when someone lies?
So, peharps a bit of Lee!Janus and Ler!Roman, please? Maybe Janus is monopolizing Roman's bed because it's soft and warm and g e t o f f XDD.
Lee!virgil ler!roman? That’s my everything lol
What about Lee Virgil being pranked with tickles by Remus but once Remus stops he shyly asks for more? Please and thank you!
If you're still taking requests maybe lee Janus being overly grumpy and getting cheer up tickles from Logan?
How about Remus acting as annoying little brothers do, and Roman getting back at him with some extra teasey tickles
may I request lee Logan and ler Patton where Pat's just gushing over how cute Lo is while tickling him?
Can please do some Lee janus and ler patton? Like Janus is being suspicious, and Patton is trying to figuring out what he is doing.
For the prompts thing how about Patton ticking Logan to make him take a break from working?
Ler Logan and Lee Remus, if you are up for it. Remus starts to bother Logan while he is working and Logan gets payback with tickles, knowing secretly that Remus wanted this to happen. ???
Pre-Accepting Anxiety Virgil walks in to the common room to see the Light Sides having a tickle fight, cue big Lee MoodTM. So now he's awkwardly trying to keep up his bad guy persona while desperately trying to figure out how to tell them that he NEEDS to be WRECKED!
Prompts! How about Patton tickling Logan to make him take a break from working I can never get enough of that! 😂
Lee!Patton and Ler!Logan (or whoever you wish!) Patton has always been the mind palace tickle monster and after a week of his evil ler moods and tickle attacks Logan turns the tables and gets revenge tickles?
Ok so... after Accepting Anxiety, Virgil is a little shaken from his name reveal. He sorta hides away in his room because he’s embarrassed, until Roman comes in to check on him and cheer him up and make him feel welcome with tickles 🥺
Logan maybe gets hurt, (trips or bumps against something) and Patton decides to tend to him, making sure he's not injured badly, but it turns out Logan is ticklish where Patton is examining
Ler Patton Lee Deceit - Patton accidentally brushes by Deceits scales and it sets Deceit into a fit of giggles. So Patton gets curious and starts to poke and stroke the patches of scales that are all over Deceits body. And Deceit secretly not so secretly enjoys this
Maybe some cheer up tickles with Logicality where both were watching a show and a tickle scene appeared and person B is like "Oh, this is a signal. That is how I should cheer up my friend."?
How about lee!janus and ler!virgil where Virgil remembers Janus being super ticklish back when he lived with the dark sides still and decides to see if he's still that ticklish.
Could you do a college AU where the core 4 are in their university’s theatre department? Like... they all are walking back to the dorms and they find out Roman is extremely ticklish and tickle and tease him the whole way back??
How about lee Logan hiding his lee mood from Virgil?
lee!Virgil and ler Patton, Logan, and Roman. Virgil has a huge lee mood and is way to shy to ask to be tickled so he drop little hints to try and get tickles( more like Virgil being an a** and a bratty little sh*t). The sides act like they don’t know what he want, but do. So they force him to ask
anything lee logan? I would DIE for lee logan
Okay I’m bored and I need lee!Virgil and lers Janus and Remus
Anything lee Logan would be delightful! Thank you!
I was wondering if you could do something where Virgil gets stuck somewhere and the twins find him and team up to take advantage of the situation? Thank you in advance, your work is amazing!
I would like to make a trade. I will give you a boop for lee!Logan ler!Remus. :D
Janus with hypersensitive scales is the bestttt so how about a rude snake getting tickled to tears by an unforgiving Ler Logan? Maybe using a new tool that makes Janus scream?

Try, Try, Try
Read on Ao3 Part 1 Part 2
Warnings: implied/referenced suicide, implied/referenced bullying
Pairings: prinxiety, moceit
Word Count: 3974
Virgil comes home with flowers one day.
Janus blinks in surprise when the door opens to reveal Remus first, looking back over his shoulder followed by a bouquet with his other son's hoodie sleeves wrapped around the stems. He sets aside his book and stands up to meet his children, pulling Remus in for a cuddle first before addressing the, um, flowery elephant in the room.
"Those are pretty."
"Thanks. Uh, Roman gave them to me."
Janus blinks again. "Roman gave them to you?"
"Yeah." Remus shuffles but remains quiet as Virgil turns the bouquet this way and that. "We, um, we were just leaving school after the club meeting and he was there, with them."
A light pink dusts the top of his cheeks as he smiles almost unconsciously at the flowers. Janus watches as he looks up at him, smile slowly widening.
"I never thought anyone would give me flowers."
Oh, my precious boy…
"Well, then," Janus says, reaching out to ruffle his hair, "we'd better find a vase for those."
Virgil squawks in protest but allows himself to be guided into the kitchen. Janus follows, fatherly need to tease his baby warring with his fatherly need to check why Remus is being so quiet. In the end, when he glances over to check on Remus, Remus shakes his head subtly and indicates Virgil.
Not while he's in the room, then. Understood.
Dinner passes uneventfully, save for the glances Virgil can't help shooting at the flowers. Janus offers to have them in his room instead but Virgil insists the light is better for them down here, and, well, what is Janus supposed to do except ruffle his hair again? It's been so long since he's seen Virgil so genuinely excited and flustered about something, let him enjoy it.
Of course, when Virgil does eventually make the retreat to his room, he sobers. He watches and waits to hear the click of Virgil's bedroom door before turning all of his attention to Remus.
"I don't think Roman bought them for Virgil," is Remus's opening blow, "and I don't—I don't know why he did buy them."
Swallowing, Janus nods and beckons him over to the couch. Remus comes, sitting next to him and curling up into a little ball. "What makes you think that?"
"Roman looked surprised that we were still at school. He was walking past the building, not waiting for us to come out. And he looked super shocked that Virgil was staring at the flowers. I think he even went to hide them behind his back." Remus snorts. "Of course he doubled down on the whole 'bought them for you' thing as soon as he saw Virgil, so…"
Janus hums, fingers idly toying with the hair at the back of Remus's neck. A pit opens up in his stomach and he tries to swallow it down. "Did you tell Virgil any of this?"
"Hell no. You saw him, he's the most excited he's ever been. He's in love." Remus spits the word out like it's poison. "He thinks the sun shines outta Roman's ass."
Janus just barely manages to contain his snort but taps lightly on Remus's shoulder. "Remus."
Remus sighs and leans against him. "No, I didn't tell him. I—you saw how excited he was, he—"
A pause.
"I'm not gonna fuck this up for him before I know for sure, okay?"
"I know, little anomaly." Janus leans down to kiss his forehead. "I'm so proud of you for handling this so well, you know that, right?"
"Yeah, yeah, get off, Dad."
"Never."
Despite his advice to Remus—and to himself, let's be honest—Janus can't stop thinking about his son's words. Is it possible that Roman bought those flowers for someone else? Is he cheating on Virgil? He's not too proud to admit he wouldn't put it past him. That dinner did some to allay his suspicions of Roman, but anyone can put on a facade for just one night. His heart clenches at the thought of Virgil finding out Roman's been cheating on him, of the meltdown and isolation that would surely come after, how much progress Virgil's made with coming out of his shell and how proud all three of them are for him because of it. And oh, what of the fight that would surely come between his boys afterwards, where Remus would barely restrain himself from saying I told you so, and Virgil would scream at him.
He hopes against all hope that whatever support he can provide for them would be enough.
He's glad Remus didn't tell Virgil, because he can feel the doubts niggling in the back of his own mind as he tries to continue with his life. He does his best to ignore them, saying he needs to trust Virgil's judgment, let what's going to happen happen, he can't protect him his whole life—even though he wants to—but when he sees a familiar figure walking down the street with a bouquet of flowers as he's sitting in his car one day, he contemplates doing nothing for a grand total of three seconds before he cautiously starts the car and pulls into the street.
He follows Roman down the blocks, past the school, past the theater, until they reach a stretch of empty road across the street from a wrought-iron fence. Roman turns into the gate and starts down a narrow path. Janus quickly pulls over behind the last parked car and watches him, frowning as he takes in the green grass and crumbling shed.
What could Roman be doing here? Unless he has very strange ideas about dating places, it's unlikely he's meeting someone here. And the flowers in his hands aren't going to make up for it for most people.
Then Janus sees the headstones and barely resists the urge to curse himself out.
A graveyard. Roman's going to a graveyard.
A quick glance around shows that Roman's stopped. He's stood in front of one of the headstones, his back facing Janus. He bends down, laying the flowers at the foot of it. After a moment, he reaches out and brushes some dirt off of the stone. His head bows, and even from so far away, Janus can see his shoulders start to shake.
He shouldn't be here, he realizes belatedly, this is clearly a private moment. He's intruding and being creepy. He should leave. Right now.
Right now.
But then another car pulls up across the street and another man gets out. He's near Janus's age, small round glasses perched on the edge of his nose, light blue raincoat over a buttoned polo and trousers. He goes to the gate and walks inside, right up the same path where Roman is.
Do as I say, Janus says internally to the memory of his sons, not as I do.
He watches as the man pauses next to Roman. Roman looks up and quickly gets to his feet, dusting off his pants and folding his hands behind his back. They're too far away for Janus to hear their conversation, but it's clear that Roman says something that the other man has heard before, because he shakes his head in that 'not this again' way Janus has perfected, thank you—and nods to the grave, saying something that makes Roman's shoulders tense and then slump. There's silence for a few moments before Roman mumbles something else and the man shakes his head.
Janus watches with a frown as the man reaches out to lay a hand on Roman's shoulder, but Roman flinches away. He mumbles something else before he turns, clearly wanting to run away but restricting himself to a brisk walk. The man watches him go, before he kisses his fingertips and touches the top of the headstone.
When he turns to walk back out to his car, Janus makes up his mind.
He gets out and leans against his car, waiting for the man to reach him. The man notices, because of course he does, and tilts his head before looking both ways and crossing the street.
"You were watching."
It's said softly enough that it's not a direct accusation, but Janus draws himself up all the same. "Yes, I was."
He nods to a retreating Roman.
"I do hope he wasn't bothering you."
The man glances over his shoulder too, before shaking his head. "No, he wasn't. Did you come with him?"
"Yes."
"What for?"
"Fatherly concern."
The man looks at him, his gaze traveling up and down Janus before looking at his face again. "You're not his father."
Damnit. "No."
The man spreads his hands, some of the friendliness beginning to leave his voice. "Then what're you doing here?"
Shit.
"That boy is dating one of my sons," Janus says, caving in, "and my son came home with flowers that weren't originally meant for him."
"Roman's dating one of your sons?"
"Yes."
The man nods, glancing over his shoulder again, before he pinches the bridge of his nose and looks back up with a smile. "Sorry, I think we got off on the wrong foot. I'm Patton."
"Janus." They shake hands. "I apologize for intruding, but…I was afraid my son's partner was cheating on him."
"Yes, well, that would do it, wouldn't it?"
The two laugh for a moment before Janus nods to the graveyard again. "Forgive me if this is too personal, but…whose grave is Roman visiting?"
Patton looks at him for a long moment. "Do you have time for coffee?"
"Thank you," Patton says as Janus sets their drinks down on the little wooden table. The coffee shop buzzes around them as he takes his seat too, shrugging off his coat. "I do like this little place."
"Can't say I've ever been."
"They do incredible milkshakes in the summer."
"I'll have to try it out."
They both take a sip of their respective drinks before Patton sighs and adjusts his glasses. "Thank you for agreeing to sit down, by the way. I figured this conversation would be better had sitting down."
"I can't say my curiosity hasn't been piqued."
The corner of Patton's mouth quirks up before he takes a deep breath. "Roman was visiting my son's grave."
Janus blinks. "Your…your son's grave?"
"Yes."
"I—I'm sorry for your loss," he manages weakly, the bottom of his stomach freefalling toward the center of the earth, "I, um…"
Pull yourself together, man!
"I'm sorry for your loss," he says again, stronger this time, "I can't imagine how horrible that must've been."
Patton nods. "Thank you. It…well. One day at a time, right?"
Janus nods dumbly. The first thing I do when I get home is going to be cuddling both my little gremlins. No protests. Family cuddle night.
"How long?"
"A few years now." Patton glances out the window to the graveyard across the street. "Still feels unreal sometimes."
"Mm." What the hell do I say to that? "What was his name?"
"Jamie."
"That's a wonderful name." Why did I say that? What the fuck does that have to do with anything?
Patton, thankfully, seems to be at least somewhat endeared by his bumbling, because he laughs. "Yes, I thought so too."
"Is—sorry, I don't want to ask so many personal questions."
"Ask away. I don't mind talking about him."
"Is the mother still in the picture?"
"Separated but still friends." Patton takes a drink. "It was…well, as I'm sure you can imagine, it was hard to keep going after losing him. We decided it wasn't going to last—the marriage, that is—and we're better off as friends now."
"Still, that must've been challenging."
He drags his finger along the rim of his cup. "It was better, actually, in a weird way. When we were still together, it felt like we were trying to force it. Actually talking about it and deciding the best way to move on was to, well, move on, it was…it helped."
"I'm glad to hear it."
Patton nods, still staring at the tabletop before he shakes himself. "Sorry, I don't mean to go on and on."
"I'm the creep who was watching you at your son's grave," Janus deadpans, "you're the more reasonable one here."
He laughs again and shakes his head. "Whatever you say."
Janus takes another drink before he steels himself and opens his mouth again. "I have to ask: why does Roman visit your son's grave?"
Patton smiles at him over the rim of his cup. "You haven't asked how Jamie died yet."
"Uh, should I have?"
"That's normally the order that people ask. 'Who is it,' then 'how long ago,' then 'how.'" He points a finger at Janus. "You broke tradition, though, you asked about his mother next. Well, I guess technically you asked about his name."
"Am—would you be comfortable telling me how he died?"
"It's part of why Roman comes to visit him, so yes." Patton sets his cup down. "Jamie committed suicide."
Oh, fuck.
Are Remus and Virgil too big to fit in my bed anymore?
"I'm so sorry."
Patton just nods because really, what are you supposed to say to that? "Thank you. But yes, in his…note that he left, he—well, he left two."
"Two?"
"One on his pillow for me and his mother, and one…" Patton takes a deep breath. "One he sent to Roman."
A horrible feeling rises in Janus's throat.
"We didn't know about the second one at first," Patton continues, "we were too upset that our boy had—well, that he wasn't going to be with us anymore. But then we read the note again and he—he blamed Roman for…he said if we were looking for someone to blame, it was Roman's fault."
Janus's back hits the chair with a thump.
"We'd heard about the bullying, but we didn't—I didn't know it was that bad. And I certainly didn't think he'd send another note to Roman, but…" He shrugs helplessly. "I guess we can only know so much about our children."
Janus just nods dumbly.
"He came to the funeral, you know?" He taps his cup on the table absentmindedly. "He didn't come inside the church for the service, and he stood far away from the grave while the burial was happening, but we saw him after everyone else was leaving and…goodness."
Patton shakes his head, fingers on his idle hand twitching.
"He looked like he'd been crying non-stop since Jamie died. He was wearing a suit he must've borrowed from his father and he'd clearly done his best to make himself look presentable. He brought his note—the one Jamie sent him—and he looked so young."
A child in his father's suit with his eyes still red and swollen from crying. Janus's heart clenches despite himself.
"We read the note Jamie sent him and…" Patton sighs. "It was hard, you know? Because we'd just buried our son and here was the boy who'd bullied him so severely, he felt the need to take his own life, but that note was…vicious."
Janus swallows around the lump in his throat. "…'vicious?'"
Patton shrugs. "Like I said. Jamie blamed Roman."
Oh.
Oh,
Oh, no.
"And then he said he wasn't going to make any excuses, because he didn't have any, and he—oh, he tried so hard not to cry." Patton closes his eyes. "He just said he was sorry. That he was so sorry and he would spend the rest of his life sorry. He asked us if there was anything we needed, or anything we wanted him to do, he would do it. He—are you a religious man?"
"Can't say so, no."
"Ever been to church?"
"Once or twice when I was younger."
"I swear to you it looked like someone put the fear of God into him. He looked like he was confessing—and I guess he was—but that we had the power to damn him for all eternity. I've never seen a child look so scared but try so hard to hold it in."
A car drives by outside. Someone at the counter calls out an order for Carol.
Janus's chest wars with itself. The part of him that's still sitting in Remus's room, holding his boy as he cries himself to sleep hisses that it's about damn time Roman learned that his actions have consequences. The part of him that ruffled Virgil's hair as his son blushed at having a boyfriend says that they're all still children.
He can't get the image of Roman in his father's suit out of his head. He knows that boy. He spoke to that boy. In his kitchen, while his sons weren't in the room, ready to be eviscerated.
"Sorry," Patton says suddenly, "that was a lot."
"No, no, it's fine. I asked." Janus pulls himself together and looks back at him. "Thank you for telling me. He—has Roman been coming to Jamie's grave ever since?"
Patton nods, tapping his fingers on the table. "Once a week, at least. Brings flowers with him each time, or he'll bring a letter. He's said I can read it if I want, he owes that to me."
"Do you?"
"No. I've…goodness." He shakes himself. "You said Roman was dating one of your sons?"
Janus nods.
"How…has he been doing with that?"
He sighs. "It's not been the easiest. On the surface, Roman's been very good to him, and he says as much. But Roman used to bully his brother too and so…it's complicated."
"What's your son's name?"
"The one Roman is dating's named Virgil. His brother is Remus."
"You're Remus's father?"
Janus frowns, then realization dawns on his face. "Jamie Everheart. Yes, I—I think I've met your son. He was—he was a wonderful boy."
"Remus DeLuca. Yes, I—oh, I can't—" Patton's expression does several comical transformations. "Yes. I can imagine having Roman dating Virgil would be complicated."
"That's one way to put it, yes." Janus shakes his head. "I'm…torn. Because at times it's hard to figure how the boy who bullied Remus is the same boy who keeps an extra hoodie and emergency snacks in his car for Virgil."
Patton shakes his head. "I don't know. Honestly, I don't. That boy is miles away from the bully I remember hearing about. Of course that doesn't mean none of it happened or that anyone is obligated to forgive him, but…"
He takes a deep breath.
"That boy walks like he's got the weight of the world on his shoulders. He looks too old and too young for it."
"Have you ever spoken to his parents?"
"I spoke to his mother once. Only once, when all of it was still going on. I thought—I don't know, giving her a piece of my mind would help straighten Roman out, but she—" He shakes his head. "I don't know if she didn't believe me or if she just didn't care. I've never seen his father."
"I haven't either."
"For whatever it's worth," Patton says, sitting up properly, "I think it'd be worth keeping an eye on Roman."
Janus sits up too. "What for?"
"He may not be the bully anymore, but that boy isn't alright. He's…" Patton hesitates. "I don't know. I don't think he's likely to hurt either of your sons, not anymore, but he's not as mature and collected as he presents himself to be."
"I know." He goes to take another sip of his coffee when he realizes it's gone cold. "Sorry. I didn't mean to keep you this long for something this…maudlin."
Patton laughs. "Would you believe me if I said I almost enjoyed it?"
"No, I don't think I would."
Patton stands, pulling his coat on. "It was good to meet you, Janus. We should get coffee again."
"Maybe without all this talk of sons and troubles, hm?"
"Yes, I think I'd like that."
"Dad? What happened, why'd you take so…" Remus trails off when he sees Janus all but stumble through the front door. "Dad?"
Janus fumbles out of his shoes and coat and lurches across the room with his arms open. Remus scrambles up from the couch and wraps his arms furiously around his waist.
"Oh, Remus, my little anomaly…my Remus…" Janus isn't even sure what he's saying. "My baby boy…"
"V! V, get your ass down here!"
"Why, what do you want?"
"It's Dad!"
Shuffling and banging and muffled curses come from upstairs and then his other baby is flying down to the living room and crashing into them. He just opens his arm and cuddles his sweetheart to his chest.
"Hi, Dad," comes the muffled voice, "missed you."
"I missed you too, sweetie," Janus mumbles, his voice cracking, "my boys…my sweet boys…"
"C'mon, Dad, let's sit on the couch."
"Yeah, let's—the pillows are already down here for movie night, let's just sit, okay?"
He lets his babies push him onto the couch and promptly pulls them close again, peppering kisses over their heads like they're six years old again. His boys…his precious boys. He holds onto Remus's waist and Virgil's shoulders, just closing his eyes and reminding himself that they're here, they're safe, they're okay.
"Dad?"
"Mm?"
"Are you—are you crying?"
"Yeah, sweetie. I think so."
"Do I need to kill someone?"
"Remus!"
"What? Like you don't want to!"
He lets out a watery chuckle. "You don't have to kill anyone, sweetie. Just let me hold you."
"…okay, as long as you promise."
"I promise." He kisses Remus's cheeks and pulls him even closer. "My Remus…"
Virgil shifts to give Remus's head more room and squeaks when Janus holds him tighter. "Dad!"
"Am I hurting you, sweetie?"
"No, you're just—normally you're not this…clingy."
"I missed my babies, that's all."
"Oh, my god, Dad." Virgil's face gets warmer and Janus just ruffles his hair. "You're so embarrassing."
"Mhm. And there's nothing you can do about it."
They end up ordering pizza that night because Janus doesn't want either of his boys to leave his sight for very long. They watch a movie and fall asleep in a pile on the couch, still curled up around each other. Janus watches his sleeping sons and runs his fingers through their hair like he did when they were still small enough to fit in his bed.
My sweeties…my babies.
As he drifts off to sleep, though, he catches sight of the flowers, almost completely wilted in the vase. They're going to have to throw them out soon.
And he thinks of Patton, whose son is buried under flowers, and of Roman in a suit too big for him, standing with a note clutched in his hand.
And of how out of all the things he's heard about Roman, from Remus, from Virgil, and from Patton, the one that sticks out the most in his mind is scared.

Chapter 9: Loose Lips Sail Ships
Virgil's little slip-up at the end of chapter 37 has consequences.
Words: 1,005 Content Warnings: None Ships: Prinxiety/Moceit Rating: T+ (16+) Genre: Nonsense, Sass Additional Tags: Empathy is a bitch Between 37 and 38
“Virgil, that’s not you, is it?” Roman asks in a confused voice, holding his hand over his chest.
“No, when it comes to embarrassment, it’s usually Patton,” Virgil answered with a small sigh, feeling the bright, sharp shame pinching at her under her sternum another time this afternoon. “Should we ask why it keeps happening?”
“And possibly make it worse? No, thank you,” Roman scoffed, waving his hand. “I have homework, anyway,” he muttered miserably, kicking at his desk leg.
“No motivation to do it again?” Virgil asked.
“I am ready to burn all of it before my brain will even let me look at it. And I’m medicated, this is bullshit,” Roman mumbles, crossing his arms and pacing the room. “Speaking of… you mention it relatively often. Have you ever committed arson, Virgil?” Roman asked curiously.
“Be gay, do crimes,” Virgil responds with a salute and a smirk.
“Virgil, my vampiric darling, that doesn’t answer my question,” Roman insists, now standing over Virgil in her desk with his arms crossed.
“What are you, a narc? Don’t make me call my lawyer,” Virgil huffed, rolling her eyes at him.
“We are both dating your lawyer,” Roman pointed out.
“At least he’s not a narc,” Virgil stated flatly, drumming her fingers on the desk.
“When have I ever narced on you?” Roman asked, his arms slipping from their position.
“I plead the 13th,” Virgil states, turning away to look back at her laptop.
“Virgil, I’m not a history person, or whatever, but I’m pretty certain that abolishes slavery,” Roman said, sounding completely confused.
   “Damn right.” Virgil nodded vehemently.
“You could have just said you don’t want to answer,” Roman said flatly, putting his hand on her shoulder. Virgil paused, listening and hearing a familiar pair of feet coming down the hall. “What is it?” Roman asked.
“Patton?” Virgil responded distractedly, gently pushing Roman out of the way to get up and open the dorm door. Patton is just standing there when she gets there a moment later, bright red in the face. Virgil doesn’t know what’s happening, so she steps out of the way and Patton walks in, holding themselves tightly, and Virgil closes up behind them.
“What’s up, Pat?” Roman asks, putting his hand on Patton’s shoulder.
Patton moves to collapse in Virgil’s chair, still biting their lip and completely red in the face. “Oh. You know. Logan just asked me to explain what a vampire kink entails,” Patton whispered, Roman’s back shooting straight with his eyes going wide. “He wasn’t teasing or anything. He was just curious. The problem was I just stammered out ‘teeth’ after three minutes of standing there like a deer in headlights,” Patton whispers. Roman snorts, his hand shooting over his mouth as he holds back the urge to laugh.
“Is teeth the thing?” Virgil asks curiously, honestly having no idea what exactly it was about vampires that Patton was into.
“That’s the other problem. He looked up vampires online. Showed me some art. Asked me to pinpoint what was sexy about it. I’m very tired from that exchange, and I am here to demand unshielded cuddles from Ms. Accidentally-outs-her-friend-as-being-into-vampires. Not answer more questions that I don’t really want to field,” Patton muttered, looking up at Virgil from the chair. Roman’s still holding back laughter, now also red in the face from holding his breath.
“Whoops,” Virgil muttered, dropping her shield automatically. Patton let out a soft sigh, already reaching out for Virgil's bond.
“You didn't,” Roman gasped, putting his hand over his mouth.
“I just didn't understand why Logan would want to be bitten by me, okay?” Virgil hissed out. “It was an accident, and I offered to fix it, but Logan wouldn't let me wipe his memory,” she muttered. “So, setting up the air mattress, I'm guessing?” Virgil asked, trying to change the subject and take care of Patton.
“Virgil,” Roman groaned, rubbing his face with his hand.
“What?” Virgil demanded, feeling incredibly ashamed all over again. Probably from Patton.
“Did you forget you're hot again?” Roman asked indignantly.
“I run cold, remember?” Virgil joked, moving to go set up the air mattress anyway. Patton seemed too red to respond.
“Not only do you look like some kind of alt himbo, you're about as smart as one, too,” Roman sighed heavily, running his hand through his hair. “Virgil. Get it through your hard skull. Humans don't need a vampire kink. You don't even need your fancy brain-melting voice. You're built like a damned marble statue. People don't need more than that,” Roman insisted vehemently, and Virgil paused, blinking at Roman.
“Are you sure Logan wasn't just being nice?” Virgil asked, feeling a little lost. She naturally scares people off.
“Probably a better conclusion to jump to than vampire kink,” Patton whispered, gripping their skirt in their hands.
“… Double whoops. Sorry, Pat,” Virgil apologized, rubbing the back of her head. In retrospect, that wasn't her best moment.
“It'll be fine. Just cuddle me,” Patton murmured, clenching the skirt in their hands.
“On it. Sorry again.” Virgil felt the heat in her face from Patton's blush.
Virgil set up the bed quickly, and Patton got up to nervously stand next to the bed while Virgil finished. She wrapped them up in her arms as soon as possible, pulling them down onto the bed and under the blankets without hesitating. Patton let out another sigh, their arms hesitantly coming up to hug Virgil back under the sheets.
“I’ll join you too in a hot minute, just need to finish this damn homework,” Roman huffed, kicking at the floor and going to sit at his desk.
“Was this the right motivation?” Virgil joked quietly as Patton nestled closer, curling into her chest.
“With Patton’s emotions like this?” Roman whispered near-silently. “I don’t think there’s anything better,” he said, a certain resignation in his voice as he started his homework. Virgil suppressed a grimace, holding Patton close. Though as far as consequences went, this wasn’t the worst outcome she’d ever had to face.

analogince and intrualiceit for the ship ask game?
Analogince - ship it
1. What made you ship it?
I really love the dynamics between Virgil, Roman and Logan, and I think they'd be so sweet together!!
Also, I really like LAMP in theory but I'm not a big fan of Patton ships, so I tend to prefer just these 3 together.
2. What are your favorite things about the ship?
So many things..... but I think I really like the fact that they're all such nerds!! That's true for all of Sanders Sides characters lol, but I think these three are nerds in a way that means they can specifically relate to each other. Roman and Virgil both really love Disney!! Logan and Virgil i think would be the types to enjoy their interests quietly (unless debating with Roman), and Roman and Logan are both very passionate about the things they like, as well as having a shared interest in poetry. So, yeah, I rllly like the idea of these 3 talking abt their interests and debating together, or just quietly cuddling during a movie night :)
3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?
Not really an unpopular opinion, but I've seen the headcanon around that these three write poetry for each other and I've decided to adopt that, 10/10 very cute XD
Intrualiceit - don't ship it
1. Why don't you ship it?
This one was genuinely hard because I feel like I'm being pulled in both directions. I love dukeceit and moceit, and there are some aspects of intrualiceit that I really like, but overall I just don't really vibe with it. Ig it just doesn't interest me as a ship.
2. What would have made you like it?
I think I'd be interested in their dynamic if Janus was dating both Patton and Remus, but those two aren't dating each other. I've mentioned before that intruality doesn't really interest me, but I'd be really interested in exploring Patton and Remus' platonic dynamic in that situation, with them trying to get along for Janus' sake then eventually coming to understand each other more and mayhaps they fall in love along the way.
3. Despite not shipping it, do you have anything positive to say about it?
I really like the idea of Patton x two people whose existence goes against everything he's been taught about morality, so he ends up changing his perspective. I think spending more time with Janus and Remus would genuinely help Patton grow as a person, and I think they'd help him relax a bit, which he really needs atm.

For the one shot requests: Perhaps some Moceit fluff? Maybe some cuddles? Whatever you’d like 💙
In all fairness this said “whatever you’d like” so it’s got some angst, but not to worry. It’s my writing, so it’s a good old hurt/comfort with plenty of cuddling. I’d love to hear what you guys think, and reblogs are always appreciated!

Break a Little, Heart of Mine [Moceit]
Janus didn’t know how he’d gotten to this point. He thought back to when things first started when everything was just beginning to creep in, all so new and underdeveloped. He should’ve cut himself off from the feelings the moment they arose and now it was far too late to amputate, the disease having long since spread. There was no saving him now.
There were so many instances where he could’ve left, abandoned the newly forged relationships, and shut himself off again. It would’ve been easier that way, going back to being the villain, despised and untrusted. After all, who in their right mind puts their trust in a liar?
But he isn’t just a liar, now is he? He’s so much more than that, so much more than he might like to admit. And now the others knew too. Self-preservation is quite hard to villainize once you see it for what it is. Did they see him for what he was? He sincerely hoped not.
He shouldn’t have let them in, the others. He had a job to do, that’s the extent of it, and he did his job well. He’d maintained the persona of a wrongdoer for so long because it suited him. No one needed to trust him, not even Thomas, so long as he could do his job in peace. He would help Thomas without the gift of praise, he would do it all in spite of the other’s contempt, he would do anything necessary to ensure Thomas had the best life possible even if he hated him. Did it sting? Knowing the others had so much distain for him, that his host despised his very existence? What a preposterous question.
It hurt like hell. It burned, festering like a fire in the pit of his stomach for years with only Remus for company. Virgil had been there once, they’d been close. Janus didn’t like to think about that, knowing dwelling on the past would only distract him.
He supposed for a while not absolutely everyone despised him. Remus had never seemed to have any ill-will towards him, though it would be hard to tell if he did. The way Remus treated a friend and a foe was eerily similar. Janus had long since stopped trying to dissect Remus, looking for some hidden, deeper person hidden beneath the gore and crude humor. Remus was Remus, regardless of anything else. He was unabashedly himself, regardless of how much others might wish him to act otherwise. Honestly, he was a consistency that Janus was relieved he could always fall back on. He got on Janus’s nerves at the best of times, but that didn’t change the fact that they found company in being misfits.
Except…Janus wasn’t sure how much of an outcast he was now. Not after everything that had happened, not after Thomas had said those words that carried more weight than he would ever comprehend: I don’t know that we are. Roman had challenged Janus’s being present and Thomas had disagreed, rebelling against his hero.
Janus had never required Thomas’s respect, he’d never needed his admiration but now that he had it? He hardly knew what to make of it. It would be a lie to say that Janus hadn’t imagined a world in which Thomas cared for him and included him just as he did the other sides, but that had been nothing more than a fantasy as far as he was concerned. He’d never truly anticipated it, and now here he was, accepted, welcomed into the conversation, even.
And then there was Patton.
Janus’s feelings for Patton had always been fairly complicated. Their very existence made opposition inevitable; morality and deceit go about as hand-in-hand as oil and water. He’d fought to get his voice heard for years, but Patton wouldn’t allow it, too lost in a fantasy world where no wrong existed and lies were a gateway to evil. For some time Janus considered he might’ve hated Patton for what he’d put him through.
It was difficult, hating him, even after everything. Patton was so soft, so full of love for everyone except him. Janus knew that despite everything, Patton was well-intentioned in everything that he did. He would never want to hurt someone, certainly not Thomas, and yet once he had he lost control.
Janus had to admit, seeing Patton transform into a giant video-game frog with rippling abs was just about the strangest thing he’d ever borne witness to. Patton’s meltdown was not without consequences, either. Finally, after so many years of abject denial, Paton was forced to face the fact that morality is by no means a black-and-white issue. Selfishness is not equal with immorality and gluttony, and for the first time in front of the light sides, Janus presented himself fully. He wasn’t just Deceit, nor self-preservation alone; he was Janus.
Sharing his name hadn’t been something he’d intended to do, but Roman had questioned him with fear, asking how he could possibly be trusted. Revealing himself was something he wasn’t sure he’d ever get the chance to do, that he’d ever have the courage to do. It wasn’t something he’d ever be able to take back even if he wanted to.
He’d dreamt of it sometimes, removing a glove, holding up his right hand and saying, clearly and confidently: “My name is Janus.”
This dream had never included Roman laughing in his face. It was instinctual, the retort he made comparing Roman to his twin. It wasn’t fair to either of them in the end, especially not Remus, but even now Janus didn’t fully regret what he’d done. It had taken so much to tell him, he knew Roman knew it wasn’t easy, and yet he’d laughed at him. He’d insulted him. And then he’d promptly sunk out when he got his feelings hurt.
So Thomas’s acceptance of him was something he hadn’t been counting on, but Patton? Now that was something else entirely.
Patton had been the first to use his name. Janus didn’t want to admit the way he liked his name on Patton’s lips, hearing it breathed out by someone who’d opposed him for so long. And he’d asked, genuinely and frightened if there was a limit to saying sorry to someone. Patton had hurt Thomas and Janus could tell how much it broke his heart knowing that. Now more than ever Janus could see that Patton had been doing his very best, flawed though his views were. He was so frightened and ill-equipped and now he seemed terrified that Thomas’s love for him would waver because of the mistakes that he’d made.
Maybe that’s where it all started, the feelings that had since invaded every inch of him. Patton had used his name and it had made him feel soft, and seen, and happy. Janus was foolish enough to indulge in this joy, telling himself that it was a small allowance he wouldn’t give into. He certainly wouldn’t endear himself to Patton, certainly, he had more self-preservation than that.
As it turned out, no. No, he didn’t.
He was instead spending more and more time with Patton, accompanying him in the common room or while he was (attempting) to bake. Janus often had to offer aid with that, otherwise, Patton tended to get distracted. They're time spent together is something that, despite his better judgment, was something Janus had become dangerously fond of. Patton himself, it seemed, was someone he’d become dangerously fond of.
Once the feelings began to escalate Janus did everything he could to bite them back and simply enjoy time with his friend. But then Patton had kissed him.
They’d been watching a movie alone together in the common room, a film Janus can’t recall considering how distracted he’d been the entire duration of it. Patton was a very touchy-feely person, Janus understood this well after years of seeing him interact with the others, but none of that could prepare him for Patton cuddling up against him under a blanket, leaning his head on his shoulder. “Is this okay?” Patton asked, and Janus had wanted to reply: “No! No this is far too much to handle! This is dangerous and all wrong, and something I should not be allowing happen!” But he couldn’t, not when that selfish, lonely part of himself had longed for something like this for so long.
And when their faces had been dangerously close together Patton had asked in a small, trembling voice, “Can I kiss you?” Janus should’ve said no, he should’ve left the room and never spoken to Patton again, but instead he simply nodded, giving into foolishness.
Janus continued to lie to himself, promising that he wouldn’t become too attached and would know when to take a step back. But despite all his best efforts, Janus was getting wrapped up in Patton and all that he represented. His feelings for the moral side were only deepening, their moments spent together become more frequent and intimate. He didn’t want to admit that he was becoming addicted to Patton’s kiss – that he was becoming reliant on the joy he felt when he was in any proximity to him.
Now here Janus was, lying in Patton’s bed beside his lover; how had he allowed things to go this far?
Janus was sure his feelings were reciprocated to some extent, but certainly not to the level he felt for Patton. There was no way.
Janus sat up in bed, his heart determined to beat right out of his chest. He considered pushing the covers off of himself and slinking back to his own room. He considered never returning, never facing Patton again unless it was absolutely necessary, he considered –
“Janus?” Janus flinched at the sound of his name, seeing Patton blinking awake beside him. “Honey, what’s wrong?”
His chest tightened at the sound of the pet name. Patton had been calling him so many things lately: honey, sweetheart, darling. Janus could hardly stand the way it made his heart break a little more every time he heard it.
“Nothing’s wrong, Pat,” he said far too quickly, cursing the weakness in his tone, “Go back to sleep.”
Well, shit, Janus thought to himself as Patton flicked on the lamp and rubbed his eyes before sliding on his glasses. Janus cast his gaze on the comforter, tracing the patterns of cats and dogs on the baby blue fabric before feeling a hand settle onto his shoulder, despising warmth blooming up his arm.
“Jan –.”
“I said I’m fine,” Janus hissed, hoping it would keep Patton’s concerns at bay, “nothing to worry about.” Patton sighed beside him, refusing to remove his hand. Janus wondered, stupidly, if Patton could feel him beginning to tremble.
“Sweetheart, I know something’s the matter. Something’s been the matter for some time, hasn’t it?” Janus’s silence spoke volumes. “I was trying to give you space and allow you some time to come to me with whatever it is, but I don’t think I can ignore it anymore. I’m sorry I ignored it at all. You know you can tell me anything, don’t you?” Janus continued to refuse meeting Patton’s gaze, his eyes still stubbornly stuck on the comforter.
“Not this, Patton. It’s – it’s too much,” Janus rasped out. His voice was fragile, unlike anything he’d ever known. Janus recalled a time not long ago where he was confident in his strength, in his judgment. Now, look at him, shivering under Patton’s touch, near tears because his feelings were too much to fucking handle.
“What’s too much? Please, I’m worried, Jan. You haven’t been acting like yourself.”
I don’t feel like myself, Janus thought to himself bitterly.
He’d been a villain for so long, no-good. It had been easy, even if it hurt, even if he longed for affection. At least he didn’t have to deal with these god damn emotions. God, he sounded like Logan.
“All of this,” Janus gritted out vaguely, finally meeting Patton’s flickering gaze, “You. The…” Janus swallowed the forming lump in his throat, squeezing his eyes shut, “…relationship that we have. I was the villain for so long, I don’t know how to be anything else. I don’t know how to do this.”
Janus shivered as he felt Patton take his left hand in his own, rubbing his thumb along the scales.
“But that isn’t true. You aren’t a villain – you never really were. Janus, honey, I’m so sorry for how I treated you for so long. I didn’t ever consider your worth and that is something I will never forgive myself for,” Patton’s voice wavered sadly before he continued, “But that doesn’t mean I can’t be better now. As for us, am I overwhelming you?”
“I –,” Janus’s voice faltered, words failing.
“Talk to me, Jan. I just want things to be okay, but I don’t know how I can fix anything if I don’t know what’s going on.” Janus wanted to sink out of the room, to sob long and hard alone. He didn’t want to face this, but the heartbroken way that Patton’s spoken to him is something he can’t disregard. He let go of Patton’s hand.
“Truthfully, I don’t know how to do any of this. I’m afraid of the intimacy that y-you’ve shown me. I’m afraid of how strongly I feel for you, Patton.” The silence that hung over them was positively devastating before Patton spoke, soft and genuine:
“Janus…you know I love you, right?”
Janus’s heart panged as his head swilled to look at Patton whose eyes shone with sincerity.
“What – what did you just sssay?” The hiss that invaded his voice took them both equally by surprise. Janus was rarely at the mercy of his snake-traits, as it only happened in moments of intense emotion. It made sense, he supposed bitterly.
“I said: I love you,” Patton repeated, smiling at the flush that spread across the human side of Janus’s face.
“N-no you don’t,” Janus said as though he couldn’t sense when the others were lying. If Patton was being anything other than truthful, he would’ve been able to tell.
“Yes, I do. I didn’t want to say it before, I dunno, I figured I might scare you away.”
“Scare me away?” The notion was positively preposterous. How could Patton ever think that he could frighten Janus to any capacity? “I – are you being serious? The idea of you doing anything like that is ludicrous. I’ve just been so…”
“Afraid?” Patton supplied, his hand returning to Janus’s shoulder. Janus nodded, almost sadly. “Hey, that’s okay. It’s alright to be scared.” He shook his head.
“Not when it’s me. I’m not used to,” Janus gestured vaguely, “any of this. I’m not equipped to handle this kindness, or compassion, or love. How can you love me?” Patton frowned, wincing at the insecurity in Janus’s tone that reminded him far too much of himself.
“Because you’re you, Jan,” he answered as if it was that simple, “You’re kind and smart, and you always have everyone’s best interest in mind. I love you, Janus. I don’t know how it took me so long to realize, but I do.” Janus’s instincts to flee fell away as Patton’s threw his arms over his shoulder, pulling him into a tight embrace.
“I love you too,” Janus admitted breathlessly, sighing as Patton ran a hand through his hair.
“We’ll tell the others about us in the morning, okay?” Janus blinked, yet refused to leave Patton’s arms.
“Really? Are – are you sure?” They both hadn’t mentioned the state of their relationship to any of the other sides, as Janus had been convinced Patton wouldn’t want to do so, and maybe Patton had thought the same about him. Knowing many of the light’s opinions of him, Janus didn’t have the highest of hopes for what the reactions would be.
“I’m positive. Unless you don’t want to yet?” Janus buried his face in Patton’s chest.
“Oh no, I despise the idea of everyone knowing of our relationship, so I can continue to feel like I need to keep it a secret.” Patton giggled, bright and pretty.
“That’s what I thought. Did talking make you feel better?” Patton massaged his scalp, making Janus melt further into him.
“Mmm yessss,” he hissed contently, earning another laugh, “I uh, mean, yes. It did. I’m still fairly out of my depth with this whole, “being accepted and loved thing.” Not that I told you any of that. I can’t have my reputation completely tarnished.
“My lips are sealed.”
“Good,” Janus said through a yawn, “But you’re certainly making it easier. I’m sorry…I should’ve talked to you.”
“It’s okay, honey. I understand. Feelings can be tricky, we’ll just take things one slither at a time.” Janus nodded against him with a strained laugh, sighing as Patton shut out the light and wrapped his arms around him again.
“Night-night, Jan. I love you,” Patton said, pressing a tired kiss to his lips before shutting his eyes.
“Goodnight, dearest,” Janus crooned, finally giving way to all of the affection that had been building inside of himself, “I love you too.”
For too long, Janus hadn’t thought himself capable of love, nor deserving of it. Once he received it, the fear that such things were temporary or not as intense as his feelings plagued his mind and for the first time in a long time, he got scared. Janus was happy to have his fears invalidated, though. The idea of having someone who truly, genuinely cared so deeply about him was still a frightening concept, but one that he was becoming sure he could handle.
Janus shut his eyes, sleeping deeply, and dreaming of love.
