Key Points
This report estimates return on investment (ROI) â how much college increases lifetime earnings, minus the costs of college â for 53,000 different degree and certificate programs.
Bachelorâs degree programs have a median ROI of $160,000, but the payoff varies by field of study. Engineering, computer science, nursing, and economics degrees have the highest ROI.
Associate degree and certificate programs have variable ROI, depending on the field of study. Two-year degrees in liberal arts have no ROI, while certificates in the technical trades have a higher payoff than the typical bachelorâs degree.
Nearly half of masterâs degree programs leave students financially worse off. However, professional degrees in law, medicine, and dentistry are extremely lucrative.
Around a third of federal Pell Grant and student loan funding pays for programs that do not provide students with a return on investment.
Executive Summary
In recent years, young Americans have expressed more skepticism about the financial value of higher education. While prospective students often ask themselves if college is worth it, this report shows the more important question is when college is worth it.
This report presents estimates of return on investment (ROI) for 53,000 degree and certificate programs ranging from trade schools to medical schools and everything in between. I define ROI as the increase in lifetime earnings that a student can expect when they enroll in a certain degree program, minus the costs of tuition and fees, books and supplies, and lost earnings while enrolled. My preferred measure of ROI accounts for the risk that some students will not finish their programs.
This report updates FREOPPâs previous research on ROI, utilizing new data from the U.S. Department of Educationâs College Scorecard.
The findings show that college is worth it more often than not, but there are key exceptions. ROI for the median bachelorâs degree is $160,000, but that median belies a wide range of outcomes for individual programs. Bachelorâs degrees in engineering, computer science, nursing, and economics tend to have a payoff of $500,000 or more. Other majors, including fine arts, education, English, and psychology, usually have a smaller payoff â or none at all.
Alternatives to the traditional four-year degree produce varied results. Undergraduate certificates in the technical trades tend to have a stronger ROI than the median bachelorâs degree. However, many other subbaccalaureate credentials â including associate degrees in liberal arts or general education â have no payoff at all. Field of study is the paramount consideration at both the baccalaureate and subbaccalaureate levels.
The ROI of graduate school is also mixed. Professional degrees in law, medicine, and dentistry tend to have a strong payoff, often in excess of $1 million. However, nearly half of masterâs degree programs have no ROI, thanks to their high costs and often-modest earnings benefits. Even the MBA, one of Americaâs most popular masterâs degrees, frequently has a low or negative payoff.
The report introduces a new metric â the mobility index â to quantify the aggregate financial impact of each degree or certificate program. The mobility index multiplies each programâs ROI by the number of students it enrolls, thus rewarding programs for both financial value and inclusivity. Bachelorâs degrees in nursing and business administration dominate the top ranks of the mobility index.
Finally, the report estimates how much federal government funding flows to programs that leave students with no ROI. Around 29 percent of federal Pell Grant and student loan dollars over the last five years were used at programs that leave students with a negative ROI. The results point to a role for federal policymakers in improving the ROI of higher education.
While ROI should not be the only consideration for students approaching the college decision, the ROI estimates presented in this report can help students and their families make better choices regarding higher education. The estimates may also be of interest to other stakeholders, including policymakers, researchers, journalists, and institutions.
The full ROI estimates for undergraduate programs are available here. The full ROI estimates for graduate programs are available here.

The article includes an interactive graph which allows you to choose from various majors and find the ROI. Some samples.
Controversial opinion: While there may be an argument to waiving or subsidizing college loans for courses that strongly benefit society, no program with a negative ROI should ever be given loan forgiveness or federal funding.
If you want to study Ancient Mesopotamian Interpretive Dance - or even more uselessly, Gender Studies - for your own pleasure and enjoyment, that's your business. And your financial responsibility; the bill for that resides with you. As far as society and our tax dollars are concerned, forgiving that loan or funding that course is just setting fire to money.
Reminder that you may be better off at a trade school. Courses are often shorter, more targeted and cheaper, so you end up working quicker, earning money more rapidly and have a lower debt that's paid off sooner.

O Z S A F F E T
Full Name: Levi Ozymandias Saffet, call him "Oz" Age: 41 Birthday: August 30, 1982 Gender & Pronouns: Demi-man, He/They/any pronouns Sexuality: Queer Occupation: Motel Staff Face Claim: Rami Malek
Under the Read More is Oz's full bio. Please mind all trigger warnings!
Background:
TW // Drugs, Violence, Murder, Injury
-Born in Massachusetts to a loving family, but always was a little bit of a weirdo. Had too much fun starting arguments, shoving kids, and getting into hair-brained schemes. His parents assumed he was just 'precocious'.
-Incredibly bright and got his Bachelors and Masters in bio-chemistry. Worked in various labs with colleges and universities before moving on to BROOKLABS outside of Boston- a national lab.
-Met someone at the lab and hit it off. After dating for a few years, Oz realized they'd been cheating on him. While he cut the relationship off, the ex was given a large promotion and Oz was pissed.
-Oz found he could steal chemicals and equipment easily without anyone noticing, and began to siphon them off to folks through the dark web. While he never affiliated himself specifically with anyone, he did it all online anyways and things were relatively anonymous.
-While trying to fill the void of thrill-seeking with party drugs and selling lab equipment (and chemicals), Oz was looking for any other jobs he could do to make a quick buck, some of them becoming more dangerous.
-Oz began a very short stint as a gunman-for-hire. While he was good at it, he was given the wrong information for one of the hits and was badly injured while there to take out a target.
-Now has a lumbar spinal injury and uses a wheelchair and forearm crutches to get around. Oz still has feeling in his legs and feet but requires mobility aids. Can also drive a care- thankfully, because he was in Boston working for a different lab when the virus broke out.
-Oz stayed in Boston for a while. Many in his lab thought they could work on some kind of cure or antidote, foolishly. Oz mostly stayed for the enforced walls and special doors with only card access. He was afforded a higher level of safety, but soon people were picked off, buildings broken into, and Oz drove off to find some safety, finding Novac in the past 6 months.
Headcanons:
-Oz is a sarcastic and rude individual who's certainly not the first many think of as a 'friend'. However, when he becomes someone's friend, he is fiercely loyal.
-Currently Oz uses a wheelchair and mobility aids such as forearm crutches to get around.
-He was a huge partier but in his day-to-day life is NOT built for 'fun'. He also probably shouldn't be working in any 'customer service' type of job, but working on the first floor of the motel grants him something to do and despite him being an ornery little fuck, he's at least very organized.
-Oz would rather die than have someone see him display any type of deeper emotions, so if anyone HAS seen him cry or be truly scared, or knew him during his time in the hospital back in Boston, they are probably a very close friend. Either that, or Oz has distanced himself on purpose because he's afraid they think less of him.

Understanding the Value of a Degree in Todayâs WorldÂ

Introduction
In an era where technology and evolving job markets continuously reshape the professional landscape, the value of a degree is a topic of much debate. While traditional education has long been considered the key to career success, alternative learning paths, such as online courses, certifications, and self-taught skills, are challenging this perception. However, a degree still holds significant value in todayâs world, offering advantages in employment, personal growth, and long-term financial stability.
1. Employment Opportunities and Job Security
One of the most compelling reasons to pursue a degree is its impact on employment prospects. Many industries still require formal education for entry-level positions, and a degree can serve as a critical credential that sets candidates apart from others. According to studies, individuals with higher education degrees tend to have lower unemployment rates compared to those without formal education.
Additionally, industries such as medicine, law, and engineering require degrees for licensing and practice. Without the proper educational qualifications, it is impossible to enter these professions, making a degree not just valuable but necessary.
2. Higher Earning Potential
Statistical data consistently shows that degree holders earn higher salaries compared to those with only a high school diploma or no formal education. According to reports from labor bureaus, bachelorâs degree holders earn significantly more on average over their lifetime compared to those without one. Advanced degrees, such as master's and doctoral degrees, further increase earning potential.
While some self-made entrepreneurs and professionals have succeeded without a degree, these cases are exceptions rather than the norm. For the majority, a degree remains a stable investment in financial growth and career progression.
3. Skill Development and Critical Thinking
Higher education is not just about acquiring knowledge but also about developing critical thinking, problem-solving, and research skills. University programs are designed to challenge students intellectually, helping them to analyze complex issues, work collaboratively, and develop solutions. These skills are highly valued in the workforce, making degree holders more adaptable and capable employees.
Moreover, certain degrees provide hands-on experience through internships, projects, and practical applications, equipping graduates with real-world skills essential for their careers.
4. Professional Networking and Career Advancement
A degree program offers students a unique opportunity to network with professors, industry professionals, and peers who may play a crucial role in their careers. Universities and colleges often have career fairs, alumni networks, and internship opportunities that allow students to connect with potential employers and mentors.
Having a degree also opens doors for career advancement. Many companies prefer to promote employees with higher education credentials to managerial and executive positions. Even in competitive fields, degree holders are more likely to secure leadership roles and specialized positions that require expertise.
5. Personal Growth and Social Mobility
Beyond financial benefits, obtaining a degree contributes significantly to personal development. The university experience teaches students essential life skills such as time management, teamwork, communication, and independence. Exposure to diverse perspectives and ideas broadens one's understanding of the world and helps build cultural awareness and adaptability.
Furthermore, education is a powerful tool for social mobility. For individuals from underprivileged backgrounds, a degree can serve as a gateway to better job opportunities, economic stability, and a higher standard of living. It allows them to break generational cycles of poverty and secure a brighter future for themselves and their families.
6. The Role of Degrees in the Digital Age
With the rise of technology, online education, and skill-based hiring, some argue that degrees are becoming less relevant. Many tech companies, for instance, now focus on skills rather than formal education. However, while alternative learning paths are valuable, degrees still provide structured learning, credibility, and comprehensive knowledge that self-learning may not always offer.
Many employers still view degrees as proof of discipline, dedication, and the ability to complete long-term commitments. While alternative credentials can complement formal education, degrees remain a fundamental part of professional credibility in various fields.
7. Challenges and Criticisms of Traditional Degrees
Despite their benefits, degrees come with challenges such as rising tuition costs, student debt, and outdated curricula in some institutions. These factors have led many to question whether a degree is worth the investment.
To address these concerns, students must make informed decisions about their education. Choosing the right degree, institution, and financial plan is crucial to maximizing the return on investment. Additionally, integrating internships, certifications, and practical experience alongside academic studies can enhance a degreeâs value.
Conclusion
In todayâs world, the value of a degree remains substantial despite the emergence of alternative learning paths. Degrees continue to provide employment opportunities, higher earnings, critical skills, networking advantages, and personal growth. However, students must approach higher education strategically, ensuring they gain relevant experience and skills alongside their academic qualifications. While degrees are not the only pathway to success, they still hold significant weight in career development and long-term professional achievements.

Relationships that truly make a difference are the building blocks that have molded the success of Goodwill Industries of Northwest NC. Ask Chief Organizational Development & Mission Advancement Officer Sherry Carpenter what drives that Goodwill objective, and sheâll proudly say the entire organization is totally committed to their longstanding mission. âWe are entirely focused on providing equitable access and upward mobility for the people we serve, our team members and the communities throughout our 31-county territory,â Sherry explains. After nearly 100 years in existence, Goodwill boasts 51 store locations and career services through 28 service locations in those 31 counties, all across northwest North Carolina. Sherry began her path with Goodwill as a career coach for persons with disabilities, followed by advancement into leadership roles including Vice President of Workforce/Mission Services and a Chief Officer role. A graduate of Goodwillâs Executive Leadership Program as well as the 2020 class of Leadership Winston-Salem, Sherry holds a bachelorâs degree in psychology from Virginia Tech and a masterâs degree in organizational psychology from Appalachian State University. With a nod to March as National Womenâs History Month, she reveals what trends are now most prevalent among women in the workforce. âMillions of women left the workforce during the pandemic, especially those with school-aged children. But that has rebounded,â Sherry explains. âWomen are still the dominant workforce in healthcare and hospitality, but theyâre also pursuing traditionally male fields â which usually pay higher wages â including IT, distribution and logistics, and CDL (truck driving).â Based on what she observes from Goodwillâs female program participants, Sherry offers these words of wisdom: Starting at any age or stage of your career, make an effort to intentionally build your network. High school and college arenât too soon to start â and your professional network is especially important as you explore entry level jobs. Fight the best battles! While we all hope to cure the issues of the world, we canât fix everything. Focus on the areas within yourself you are truly passionate about. Believe in others and support their progress. Sherry says one of the most important comments she hears in the impact stories from Goodwill participants is: âSomeone at Goodwill believed in me and thought I could achieve my goals.â Look for opportunities, even if youâre not looking for a job. Show others youâre always ready and willing to learn. Be authentic. While, as women, we often have to âwear our professionalism well,â we can still show weâre human with feelings and passionate personalities. Realize your unique life experiences are important to the growth of your organization. Goodwillâs primary mission programs include career services, job skill training and educational attainment, plus specialized programs for veterans, youth and persons with disabilities. Goodwillâs Outreach Scholarship Fund also provides assistance to eligible participants for job skill education classes. Crosby Scholars is an affiliate organization of Goodwill, and they partner with, as well as provide services under, the NCWorks system. As a mission-based organization, Goodwill leads as a trusted partner in the national Mobility Action Learning Network/Urban Institute to advance the work of local programs to boost upward mobility. Since January of 2024, local organizations collaborating have included the Asset-Building Coalition of Forsyth County, Forsyth County DSS, Forsyth Technical Community College, Piedmont Triad Regional Workforce Development Board and Winston-Salem State University. Many of Goodwillâs training and education programs are in partnership with Forsyth Tech and 11 other community colleges in our region. âGoodwillâs leadership revolves around removing barriers that inhibit upward economic mobility,â Sherry explains. âThink of these barriers as community wide problems that affect people on an individual level but that individuals canât fix alone. Transportation and housing issues affect workers across the board. The availability of childcare is also a major barrier to employment in our region. Despite the services that support agencies provide, even if people qualify for government assistance, they often canât find daycares with openings, due to a provider shortage.â âPeople want to support their families and provide a better life for their children,â says Sherry. âWhen they canât, it creates enormous stress on the family and often causes disruption when moving to more affordable housing is unavoidable âMost people want to work, and having increased flexibility in schedules and benefits is crucial for local employers to offer.â Participant Profile â Jelesia Griffin Jelesia was one of the first students to complete the Distribution & Logistics skills training program, which launched last spring as a partnership between Goodwill, Forsyth Tech and Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina. Like many justice-involved individuals, Jelesiaâs background made it tough to find a job or housing. After being hospitalized and homeless for two months, she was living at the Bethesda Center. There were some housing options, but she couldnât qualify for them without a job. Jelesia enrolled in Goodwillâs EDGE program, which provides short term placement at Goodwill Retail Stores to help individuals build their work history.
