Didn't you cat like, JUST get surgery?

Yeah, he did. The two are connected. The first time he broke his leg, in a way that requires FHO surgery, a pretty involved and painful process that involves shaving down the femoral head of the bone. He has literally just gotten back to being fully mobile and he hasn’t even grown all his fur back. I haven’t even finished making payments to the vet.

He broke his other leg in the exact same place. The doctor believes that this is a result of Legg-Perthes disease, which is very rare, and causes the femoral head to be very brittle. You can read more about it here. So, what we thought was an accident turned out to be the result of a genetic condition. 

The good news is, once I can get this new surgery, he’s out of femoral head’s to break! So. You know. That’s something. 

The bad news is, I basically emptied out everything I had for the first surgery, as well as gave the vet all of my rent money for that month. I was able to pay rent only because everyone helped and donated, which was a lifesaver.

This time, I have no savings. Since I’m still making monthly payments to the vet, I don’t even have anything left from this paycheck to give to the vet to put up for the deposit. 

So, yeah, this is his second surgery this year, and it sucks, and honestly I can’t do it without help. My family won’t help, most of my friends can’t, and I hate this, because almost everyone who can donate already did last time, and I hate asking again. 

The recovery process was really hard, he couldn’t walk for almost a month, I had to keep him quarantined in the bathroom so he wouldn’t move to much, and he could barely eat. It breaks my fucking heart that he has to go through this again.

Jag är lite förbryllad över de här turkiska myggorna måste jag medge. Jag har nu i huvudsak tre myggbett som växer till storlek. Igår när jag gick till The Sunset bar så satte jag på mig sockor, sneakers, långklänning och kofta för att förhindra blodsugarna att komma åt mig. Men då sög de blod från armen istället. De turkiska myggorna vill inte ha mig här. Kanske varnar de mig för att vara ute sent. Jag tänker då inte längre vara ute sent, de har skrämt mig tillräckligt mycket nu. Tummen är snart större än (en mycket liten) potatis. Jag ska upp om fyra timmar och kan inte sova på grund av giftet som kliar så. Jag ska vara på min vakt.

Jag orkade inte vara tillmötesgående idag och nu fattar jag vad som syftas med att sånna som jag sätter upp en mur när någon gjort en besviken.

Jag är en person, ovanlig för många, som behöver stänga in mig och vara ledsen ibland. För kommer sorgen ur, kommer jag känna tyngden lätta. Hemma och med andra låter jag mig själv sällan sörja. Jag kanske har något ändå. Tänkte jag och gick ut med rödsprängda ögon, över poolområdet ut förbi spärrvakten, tog ett kort på en hund i solnedgången som morrade åt mig, gick in i restaurangen, beställde två skopor chokladglass och en te, slog mig ned utomhus och såg solen gå ned.

Jag har bara drömt obehagliga drömmar här borta. Angående den där drömmen när jag drunknade, så läste jag på om drömtydning efteråt. Vatten i drömmar skall symboliserar känslor. I mitt fall, när man sköljs över av vatten så att säga, när någon trycker ned en under ytan så syftar de på att känslorna tar över. Känslor sköljer över. Tar kontroll. Övertag. Någon skev att vatten också kan symbolisera kreativitet. För mig går nog det där hand i hand. Det var det läskigaste jag varit med om, men ändå tvingade jag mig att somna om den natten och nästa dröm blev icke ihågkommen. Jag vill inte vara rädd för att sova.

Signs of Arthritis in Dogs — Recognizing Dog Arthritis Symptoms Early and Treating Them

If you’ve got an older dog, maybe some of this sounds sadly familiar. You used to go outside and play for hours. At the dog park, those other hounds could never hope to keep up with your quick-footed canine. Your furry friend could easily jump over most obstacles, so putting up pet gates at home was practically futile. But now, things are different. Playtime has dwindled down to a half-hearted romp with a pull toy. Your pup struggles to get in and out of cars. Everything seems to elicit groans of discomfort — from climbing stairs to curling up on the couch. Are these the telltale signs of arthritis in dogs?

Arthritis isn’t that uncommon among older dogs. Larger breeds may tend to struggle more because of sheer size, but smaller pups certainly aren’t immune. Likewise, the affliction isn’t necessarily exclusive to elderly animals.

“Typical age of onset often depends upon genetics,” notes Dr. Lisa McIntyre, owner and founder of The Welcome Waggin’ mobile veterinary service. “Large breeds are more prone to elbow and hip dysplasia. Small breeds are susceptible to patellar luxation and Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease (LCPD). That first group can actually start showing symptoms at one or two years of age, if they’re afflicted. Though sometimes, we don’t see clinical signs until age seven or older, when joint deterioration and arthritis have begun.”

Regardless of pet life stage, familiarity with common signs of arthritis in dogs can result in faster intervention. That, in turn, can lead to improved quality of life — for everyone involved.

Here are a few signs of arthritis in dogs:

1. Activity Aversion

Some pet owners might attribute this to simple old age, but it may be one of the signs of arthritis in dogs. According to Dr. McIntyre, general reluctance to walk, exercise, rise and/or recline can be a key symptom of arthritis in dogs. Toys may sit untouched for weeks on end. Stairs may be avoided. Getting up for bathroom breaks might require a nudge, or even a physical hoist.

2. Irritability/Vocalization

Most puppies and younger dogs tend to be pretty happy-go-lucky. But if arthritis starts affecting joints, your trusty companion could get a little testy. Dogs can’t technically “speak up” to tell us they’re in pain, but they can offer plenty of hints. So, dogs with arthritis may groan, grumble, growl — even nip or bite when you try to pet them. They’re communicating physical distress; not a lack of affection for you.

3. Weight Gain/Flabbiness

This was actually the very first arthritis symptom we noticed in my own dog. She’s always struggled with a mild degree of hip dysplasia, and over time she began nibbling and licking at her hip and rear knee area. Our vet pointed out that she’d even begun losing fur directly over the joints. “Some arthritic dogs find this licking self-soothing,” explains Dr. McIntyre, “and the pain draws their attention to the joint in question.” This repetitive behavior might even create skin sores or hot spots.

As humans, we often tend to favor our own sore knees and ankles. So, it’s probably no surprise that visible lameness is among the signs of arthritis in dogs. Canines with back or neck arthritis may even try to hunch over, hold their head at odd angles, or sit while eating and drinking.

6. Touch Avoidance

If arthritis is indeed the cause, clinical treatment options often include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or even corticosteroids like Adequan. These won’t cure the ailment itself, but they can help control inflammation.

Dr. McIntyre explains that many vets will also try nutraceuticals and/or lifestyle changes as part of therapy. “We know that pain is mediated by several different pathways,” she says, “so a multi-modal approach is the best way to address arthritis.” If your pet is coping with this ailment, here are a few options you may want to consider to ease arthritis symptoms and associated pains:

1. Lifestyle Changes

Think about the kinds of modifications you’d appreciate if you were in chronic discomfort. Dog ramps or steps can help Fido get up on furniture. A lifting harness can provide assistance getting into the car. Orthopedic memory-foam beds can be a dream for aching joints. Food/water bowl platforms can make mealtime less of a (literal) pain in the neck.

2. Acupuncture

This ancient practice is considered one of the five central components of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It uses baby-fine needles to clear, stimulate, balance and direct energy flow throughout the body. There’s evidence that acupuncture can help reduce inflammation while increasing endorphins, and most pets tolerate it well. Check with the American Academy of Veterinary Acupuncture to find a qualified practitioner near you.

3. Massage/Acupressure

My vet is a huge proponent of regular, gentle massage. It can help stimulate the lymphatic system to eliminate toxins, while soothing muscular tension to ease pain. Never rub the painful joint itself; only around it. Also consider enlisting the services of a qualified acupressure expert, like Tallgrass Animal Acupressure Institute. This is another therapeutic TCM staple that works with energy pathways to help promote general comfort and wellness.

4. Weight Management

Dr. McIntyre feels that this might be the most important measure of all. Even a few pounds can make a world of difference to our hurting canine friends. If increased activity is out of the question, consider reducing treats and discussing a special diet with a pet nutritionist or vet.

5. Hydrotherapy

Swimming strengthens muscles, yet it’s extremely gentle on tender joints. That makes it a totally natural, very effective way to help alleviate dog arthritis symptoms. Search social media for certified canine hydrotherapy facilities, like Chicagoland’s Natural Healing Whole Dog Wellness.

6. Glucosamine and Chondroitin

“I always recommend supplementation with glucosamine-chondroitin products that have been tested for efficacy and quality,” stresses Dr. McIntyre. Indeed, this combination appears to be a fairly well-regarded option for signs of arthritis in dogs. Administering these compounds early can sometimes help to calm inflammation discomfort before joint damage becomes more severe. There are several commercial products containing this blend, with dosages formulated specifically for dogs. Some of these products also contain additional inflammation-reducing compounds, like curcumin. Examples that have worked well for my own pups include Vet’s Best Advanced Hip + Joint Formula, and Technyflex Canine.

7. Omega-3

Dr. McIntyre considers this another first-line defense for pet arthritis. Fish oil, like salmon, is packed with omega-3 fatty acids, which can help to quell inflammation. It’s also a natural antioxidant, and doesn’t carry the harsh side effects associated with certain prescription medications. Some products like Technyflex Canine derive omega-3 from green-lipped mussel.

If you’d like to try any of these options, a conversation with your vet is always the smartest approach to determine appropriate dosage. And ultimately, Dr. McIntyre urges pet owners who notice any signs of arthritis in dogs to seek intervention immediately. “Most dogs exhibit pain in understated ways, such as a subtle change in appetite or behavior,” she emphasizes. “So don’t wait for your dog to actually limp or vocalize.” By recognizing the signs of arthritis in dogs and providing caring assistance early, you may delay more pronounced joint damage over time. Best of all, you can help keep your best furry friend more agile, comfortable and content for life.

My Little Love Heart’s Fabric Design Competition

It was an absolute pleasure for Luisa Figueroa and Mark Richardson from My Little Love Heart to present the Fabric Design Competition brief to the design students of SAE Creative Media Institute at their Perth Campus.

The competition is for the students to produce a fabric design that would be a suitable inclusion to the range of prints that My Little Love Heart use in the manufacturing of their hand-made baby accessories brand. They are tasked to come up with three designs that are unique, original and either suitable for a baby boy, baby girl or unisex.

During the brief, students were shown previous and current fabrics that are being used by the My Little Love Heart brand. They were also shown a range of products including Teething toys, Baby Bibs, Bandana Bibs, Burp Cloths, Baby Headbands, Top Knots and Baby Shower Gifts that are currently being manufactured. The students were advised that when designing the fabrics, they should consider the variety of sizes of the finished product and how the fabrics will look once the manufacturing process has been completed.

Both the SAE Creative Media Institute and My Little Love Heart are enthusiastic and eager to work together. Luisa from My Little Love Heart commented “We are always on the lookout for stylish and trendy fabrics, we want to stay at the forefront of design and wanted to work with Perth’s up and coming designers who are up-to-date with the latest trends. This competition allows us to access a large pool of amazing designers and gives local design students an avenue to show their amazing skills”. Edna, Design Lecturer with SAE Creative Media Institute agreed adding “We are thrilled to be working with My Little Love Heart; they produce an amazing range of quality products and this competition allows our students to work with an up-and-coming brand. It is a great opportunity for them to work on real projects that will go into production and made available for all to see. Plus it will really add credibility to their portfolios!”

Final submissions are required by the 15th September with the winners announced on the 22nd September. The winning designs will be printed in October with product available in November throughout My Little Love Heart’s stockist’s and online.
