Wen Ning/Wei wuxian/Lan Wangji for the ask meme (aka the Boyfriends tm, listen its all about the balance!)
Alright, gonna try and get through at least a couple more of these today. Finally :’D
1. What made you ship it?
Hmm, iirc it was seeing some very aesthetically/emotionally compelling artwork for the three of them on here, that got me first interested? I had already been shipping WWX and WN since my first watch, and I think seeing fanart made something click in my head, and I went poking my nose around for fic. Most of which ended up not being what I was really looking for? (What else is new.) But then as far as WN and LWJ's dynamic, it was this sense of both having a common investment in WWX and in Sizhui, that I think was the first interesting hook of wondering what kind of dynamic they might have. (Also, the scenes with the three of them in ep...44? returning to the Burial Mounds? very persuasive.)
2. What are your favorite things about the ship?
I think probably the... nuances of three relationships that are all pretty different in character from one another, but are nonetheless each very significant and meaningful in their own ways? Wei Wuxian is definitely a pivot, I'd say, and something about how LWJ and WN are each kind of - focused in the same direction where he's concerned, without quite realising it until they all come into contact in a serious way during WWX's second life? I’m super into “two people from very different places coming to realise they have something in common and developing a quiet respect and appreciation for each other” as a general trope, honestly.
But yeah, hm, there’s something that’s like... differing levels of “socially official”-ness to each part of the relationship, and the specific context in which the three of them fit together well in the “in-between parts of the world like out wandering or on a night-hunt; and Wen Ning figuring out what sort of life he wants to have in the new, very different world he’s woken up in; and all of them recognising the importance of the other two as on a same level and choosing to honor that. (This feels very incoherent, but what else can I do.)
3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have on this ship?
Eeeh, I don’t even know; I don’t feel like I actively engage in whatever sort of fandom exists for it in any sense to have an idea of what’s really unpopular? I guess probably my general situation of “not super into fluffy throuple-ish content” probably counts... Sorry, this is probably a boring section! I think there’s more I could say, but it’s all very nebulous and trying to pin down what those feelings are and how to describe them is... not working. Oh well :/
